The commonest tiger in our tanks
Datnoides microlepis, the Indonesian, false Siamese, or finescale tigerfish, is a beautifully marked perch from the freshwaters of Southeast Asia.Much misinformation exists about Datnoides sp. in texts and on the world wide web, even in ichtbyological resources such as the popular, and usually useful, FishBase. At least partially, the confusion arises from Datnoides sp. taxonomy, which has an unstable history. Particularly, D. pulcher from Indochina was formerly included in the D. microlepis hypodigm, which is now reserved for Malesian fishes. True D. microlepis are definitely known from the Perak and Selangor river systems of Peninsular Malaya, the Batang Hari and Musi watersheds of Sumatra, and Kapuas basin of Kalimantan.
Datnoides sp. are perches, but they are not part of the Percidae. They likely share close evolutionary descent with a genus of marine fishes, Lobotes, the tripletails, on which grounds Datnoides are also known as freshwater tripletails, by association. Basal to Datnoides and Lobotes are the velvetchins, Hapalogenys, which are marine fishes very similar to Datnoides in external appearance. These three genera form the clade Lobotidae. More surprisingly, this clade of fishes, is sister to a radiation of mostly marine fishes, some of which are popular in the aquarium trade, including the saltwater angelfishes and butterflyfishes, batfishes, scats, and tangs. All these fishes share a pattern of posterolateral tooth replacement.
Despite their relationship to such a venerable radiation of marine fish, D. microlepis are almost strictly a freshwater animal. Collections from estuaries are rare, suggesting they dislike the salinity of brackish water, even at low specific gravities below 1.005, and are similarly averse to the raised pH in estuaries. Records of wild D. microlepis show they are almost always found in soft and tannin stained waters, with a pH of 4.6 to 7.3. (Whereas the true Siamese tigerfish, D. pulcher, prefers a pH that is close to neutral.) This species should not be exposed to brackish conditions by aquarists. The species also likes warm temperatures of 29 or 30 degrees centigrade. The diet of Datnoides sp. is essentially carnivorous, and should be provided in the form of defrosted food, or items from the fishmongers. In the wild, small fish consume zooplankton and aquatic insects, before graduating to larger prey.
Because adult D. microlepis itself may attain a size of 45 centimeters, or 18 inches, they can take reasonably large food items, a fact which makes them a danger to small fishes and crustaceans. (The largest D. pulcher are reportedly shorter than D. microlepis, by 5 centimeters or 2 inches.) All Datnoides sp. are messy feeders, so biological filtration must be efficient. Like most ectothermic ambush predators, Datnoides are peaceful towards non-prey animals, which is to say, those they cannot hope to swallow whole, with their highly protrusible jaws. In fact, fish of this genus are easily intimidated, by boisterous and territorial tankmates. The decor should resemble the natural habitat of D. microlepis, which is deep, lowland rivers, extending into flooded forests in the wet season. Submerged wood is quite appropriate for this fish.

Costa Rica
We had a trip planned for Costa Rica this January and I put two Roosterfish charters on the books to try again for one of my bucket list species. I decided on two because last time one day wasn't enough and I wanted the extra in case the first day didn't work out.
I won't go into great detail here about the remainder of the trip, but Costa Rice wildlife and jungles are amazing.
Tumblr media
Our yard was filled with Agoutis.
Tumblr media
Three different species of monkeys regularly came by the house as well.
Tumblr media
Some cool crabs from Manuel Antonio.
Almost as if it was destined to happen, the first day charter I took out for Roosterfish was a total bust. Not a single fish was caught the entire day. I honestly think this is the first charter I have ever been on where nothing at all was captured. Usually, I will get something or help with catching bait. I was now down to my last charter and last chance again to get the Roosterfish. This would be my 3rd charter specifically booked for this species.
Unlike the day before, we started off catching bait and I hooked several Pacific Thread Herring (Opisthonema libertate) and added them to the live well. If nothing else, at least I had caught one new species.
Tumblr media
Species #316 - Pacific Thread Herring (Opisthonema libertate)
After trolling the beach for a few hours we finally got a hit and I pulled in species #317 - the Pacific Tripletail (Lobotes pacifica).
Tumblr media
Not long afterwards I got a good solid hit and, after a couple jumps and a very nice fight, I finally pulled in species #318 and bucket list species #2 off my list - the Roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis)!
Tumblr media
It felt great to finally knock this one off the list and I told the captain mission accomplished and anything could happen now.
Over the course of the next few hours I landed the following species:
#319 - Longjaw Leatherjack (Oligoplites altus)
Pacific Crevalle Jack (Caranx caninus)
#320 - Pacific Sierra (Scomberomorus sierra)
Pacific Sierra was one of the species I lost at the boat in Acapulco back in 2017, so it was nice to finally get another chance at one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To end the day we went trolling back at the spot with the sardine bait ball and just as the day was ending I hooked into a heavy bite and reeled in what on any other day would have been the catch of the day.
Tumblr media
Species #321 - the Whitefin Weakfish or Whitefin Corvina (Cynoscion albus).
I caught 7 species on the day and 6 of them were new. I also got my target of Roosterfish and a bunch of awesome species. It was a great day out and a great trip. 2024 is off to a good start.

How To Catch Tripletail Fish: Expert Tips & Techniques
Tumblr media
To catch tripletail fish, use effective fishing methods such as drift fishing, jigging, and trolling using bait like ballyhoo, live shrimp, or artificial lures. Tripletails are often found near crab trap buoys, structures, or floating objects in the Gulf of Mexico. Keep an eye out for dark objects resembling floating leaves on the water's surface. They love shrimp, small crabs, and small baitfish as their favorite foods. Tripletails can be caught inshore or nearshore, and cruising crab pot buoys or boating signs in deep water are a good way to locate them. Pitch a lure or bait near them for a successful catch. Gulp shrimp, Gulp crab, or DOA shrimp are recommended bait choices.
1. Understanding The Behavior And Habitat Of Tripletail Fish
Understanding the behavior and habitat of tripletail fish is essential for successfully catching them. Effective fishing methods include drift fishing, jigging, and trolling, using bait such as ballyhoo, live shrimp, or artificial lures. Tripletails are often found near crab trap buoys, structures, or floating objects, so keep an eye out for these when fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Overview Of Tripletail Fish Behavior Tripletail fish are known for their unique behaviors and habits. Understanding these behaviors is essential for a successful fishing experience. Here is an overview of the behavior of tripletail fish: - Tripletail fish are usually found near structures such as buoys, crab traps, or any floating object. They have a tendency to position themselves close to these structures, making them relatively easy to locate. - Tripletail fish are known to be opportunistic feeders. They often wait for their prey to swim by and then ambush them using their powerful jaws. This behavior makes them a prime target for anglers. - These fish have the ability to change their colors, which helps them blend in with their surroundings. They can be brown, green, or even black, depending on the environment. This makes them challenging to spot and adds to the excitement of catching them. - Tripletail fish are solitary creatures and are usually found alone rather than in schools. This behavior makes them more predictable and easier to target. Identifying The Preferred Habitat Of Tripletail Fish To increase your chances of catching tripletail fish, it's important to know their preferred habitat. Here's what you should look for when searching for Tripletail: - Structures: Tripletail fish are commonly found near structures such as crab trap buoys, piers, docks, and floating debris. These structures provide shade and attract small baitfish, making them an ideal hunting ground for tripletails. - Open Water: Tripletail fish can also be found in open waters, especially near navigation markers, floating mats of vegetation, or any potential hiding spots. Keep an eye out for any unusual floating objects as they may attract tripletail fish. - Inshore or Offshore: Tripletail fish can be found both inshore and offshore, depending on the time of year and environmental factors. During warmer months, they tend to move closer to shore, while during colder months, they may venture further offshore. Key H3 Heading: Seasonal and Environmental Factors Affecting Tripletail Fish Location Understanding how seasonal and environmental factors influence the location of tripletail fish can greatly improve your chances of success. Here are some key factors to consider: - Water Temperature: Tripletail fish are more active in warmer water, so targeting them during the spring and summer months is generally more productive. They are known to move to deeper waters as the water temperature drops in winter. - Water Clarity: Tripletail fish prefer clear or slightly turbid water. They may be less active in muddy or heavily sedimented areas. Look for areas with good visibility when searching for tripletails. - Tides: Tripletail fish are often found near structures during incoming or outgoing tides. These tidal movements can create a current that brings food to the fish, making it an opportune time to catch them. - Weather Patterns: Tripletail fish are sensitive to weather conditions such as wind, temperature changes, and barometric pressure. Pay attention to weather patterns and plan your fishing trips accordingly for better results. - Fishing Techniques: Different techniques such as drift fishing, jigging, or trolling can be effective for catching tripletail fish. Experiment with different methods to find what works best for you in various conditions. By understanding the behavior and preferred habitat of tripletail fish, as well as the seasonal and environmental factors that affect their location, you can significantly increase your chances of catching these exciting and unique fish. Happy fishing!

2. Essential Equipment And Set-Up For Tripletail Fishing
Discover the essential equipment and set-up for successful tripletail fishing. From selecting the right bait to mastering effective fishing methods such as drift fishing, jigging, and trolling, this guide will help you catch tripletails like a pro. Selecting The Right Fishing Rod And Reel For Tripletail Fishing When it comes to tripletail fishing, having the right fishing rod and reel is crucial. Here are the key factors to consider when selecting your equipment: - Rod Length and Power: Opt for a medium to medium-heavy rod that is around 7 to 8 feet long. This will provide the necessary strength and sensitivity to handle tripletail. - Rod Material: Look for rods made from graphite or a graphite composite. These materials offer excellent sensitivity and are lightweight, making them ideal for long hours of fishing. - Reel Size and Gear Ratio: Choose a spinning reel in the 3000 to 4000 size range. This will give you enough line capacity and the capability to handle the size and strength of a tripletail. Look for a reel with a gear ratio of 5.2:1 or higher for faster line retrieval. - Drag System: Ensure your reel has a smooth and strong drag system, as tripletail can put up a good fight. A reliable drag system will allow you to control the fish and prevent line breaks. Choosing The Best Fishing Line And Leader For Tripletail Fish Selecting the right fishing line and leader is essential for successful tripletail fishing. Here's what you need to know: - Main Fishing Line: Use a braided fishing line in the 20 to 30-pound test range. Braided lines offer excellent strength and sensitivity, allowing you to detect subtle bites and handle the power of tripletail. - Leader Material: Use a fluorocarbon leader in the 20 to 30-pound test range. Fluorocarbon is nearly invisible underwater, which can increase your chances of enticing bites from wary tripletails. - Leader Length: Keep your leader length between 24 to 36 inches. This will provide enough distance between your main line and the fish, reducing the risk of the fish cutting the line against any structure. - Leader Connection: Use a reliable knot, such as the double uni knot or the barrel swivel, to connect your main line and leader. Ensure the connection is strong enough to withstand the fish's powerful runs and sudden movements. Must-Have Tackle And Baits For Tripletail Fishing To increase your chances of success when targeting tripletail, you'll need the right tackle and bait. Here are some must-have items: - Jigs: Carry a variety of colored jigs in the 3/8 to 1/2-ounce size range. White, chartreuse, and black are popular color choices for tripletail fishing. - Live Shrimp: Shrimp is a highly effective bait for enticing tripletails. Use a live shrimp rigged on a jighead or a free-lined shrimp near a structure or floating objects. - Crab Traps: Tripletails often hang around crab trap buoys and other floating structures. Keep an eye out for these and cast your baits near them for a good chance of finding tripletail. - Polarized Sunglasses: Invest in a good pair of polarized sunglasses to spot tripletail lurking near the surface or structure. The sunglasses will help you see through the water and increase your chances of targeting these elusive fish. Remember, tripletail fishing requires patience and finesse. Discover proven techniques and strategies for successfully catching tripletail fish, including drift fishing, jigging, and trolling. Effective bait options include ballyhoo, live shrimp, or artificial lures. Boost your fishing skills and land more tripletails with these expert tips. Drift Fishing Methods For Tripletail Fish: - Drift fishing is a popular technique for catching tripletail fish. - It involves allowing your bait or lure to drift with the current, presenting a natural-looking meal for tripletails. - Here are some key points to keep in mind when using drift fishing techniques for tripletail fish: - Use a sturdy rod and reel combo capable of handling larger fish. - Use a variety of live bait such as shrimp, mullet, or pinfish to attract tripletail. - Drift along areas with structures, such as crab trap buoys or floating debris, as tripletails are often found near these structures. - Pay attention to the direction and speed of the current to adjust your drift accordingly. - Keep your bait or lure near the surface to mimic the movement of small prey. - Be patient and allow the tripletail to fully engulf the bait before setting the hook. Jigging Techniques For Tripletail Fish: - Jigging is an effective technique for targeting tripletail fish, especially when fishing around structures. - It involves using a jig, which is a weighted lure, to imitate the movement of prey. - Here are some tips for jigging for tripletail fish: - Use a vertical jigging technique by dropping the lure near the structure and then retrieving it with short, sharp jerks. - Look for tripletails near crab trap buoys, floating debris, or any other type of structure. - Choose a jig with a color and size that matches the local baitfish. - Vary your retrieve speed and style to entice the tripletail to strike. - Use a sensitive rod and reel combo to feel the subtle bites of tripletails. - Be ready to set the hook quickly when you feel a bite. Trolling Approaches For Tripletail Fish: - Trolling is another effective technique for catching tripletail fish, especially when covering a larger area. - It involves dragging lures or baits behind a moving boat to entice fish to strike. - Here are some tips for trolling for tripletail fish: - Use a variety of lures such as diving plugs, soft plastics, or spoons to attract tripletails. - Troll along areas with structures, such as crab trap buoys or floating debris. - Adjust your trolling speed to match the natural swimming speed of baitfish. - Keep an eye on your rod tips for any signs of strikes or hits. - Use a planer or downrigger to target tripletails at different depths. - Be prepared to quickly reel in your line and set the hook when a tripletail strikes. Using Live Bait Vs. Artificial Lures For Tripletail Fishing: - When it comes to tripletail fishing, anglers have the option to use either live bait or artificial lures. - Both approaches can be effective, but there are some factors to consider when choosing between the two. - Here are some points to help you decide whether to use live bait or artificial lures for tripletail fishing: - Live Bait: - Live bait such as shrimp, mullet, or pinfish can attract tripletails with their natural scent and movement. - Live bait can be more enticing to larger tripletails that are more cautious or selective in their feeding. - It requires more maintenance and preparation to keep live bait alive and fresh during your fishing trip. - Live bait may attract unwanted bycatch or smaller fish in the area. - Artificial Lures: - Artificial lures such as jigs, soft plastics, or diving plugs can mimic the movement and appearance of baitfish. - Lures offer a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes to match the local baitfish and conditions. - Lures are more portable and convenient, requiring less maintenance and preparation compared to live bait. - Artificial lures can be more effective when targeting actively feeding tripletails or covering a larger area. Remember, the choice between live bait and artificial lures ultimately depends on the fishing conditions, personal preference, and the behavior of the tripletail fish in your area. Experiment with both approaches to find what works best for you.

When's the Best Time for a Fishing Charter in Palm Beach?
Are you looking to go fishing in one of the best spots around? Then why not try your luck with a fishing charter Palm Beach FL? From marlin and sailfish to kingfish, wahoo, and tuna, there are plenty of amazing varieties of fish ready to be caught. But when is the best time to go fishing in Palm Beach? Let's take a look at what the season holds.
Springtime Fishing Charters
Springtime is an ideal time for fishing charters in Palm Beach. During this time of year, you can expect to find dolphin, cobia, bonito, kingfish, and permit. The warm weather also attracts baitfish as well as tarpon and barracuda. You may even spot a few sailfish if you're lucky enough to be there during March or April.
Summertime Fishing Charters
Summertime is high-season for Florida fishing charters, and with good reason. You can expect to see plenty of mahi mahi (also known as dorado) during this period. Other fish commonly found include grouper, cobia, blackfin tuna, and tripletail snapper species such as mutton snapper and mangrove snapper. And don't forget about tarpon!
Fall Fishing Charters
As the temperatures cool down and the days become shorter during fall, it's not just humans that feel the change; fish do too! This means that they start migrating back up north towards cooler waters. Don't worry, though - this doesn't mean they disappear completely! Fish like wahoo, cobia, kingfish, and Spanish mackerel are still plentiful during fall fishing charters in Palm Beach.
Winter Fishing Charters
Winter provides some of the best opportunities for catching big game fish like marlin and sailfish in Palm Beach waters. As mentioned above, these species migrate south from cooler waters as temperatures rise, so winter provides prime conditions for chasing them down! This also means it's a great time to catch other pelagic species, such as blackfin tuna and wahoo!
Conclusion
No matter what season it is or what type of species you're looking for - there's always something exciting waiting for you on a fishing charter Palm Beach FL! So take some time out this season and treat yourself to an unforgettable experience on Floridian waters filled with surprises!

Tripletail didn't happen on the tripletail trip. It was too windy to go offshore safely, so we stayed in Hamanako instead and fished for bream. Not a species I'm that fussed on, but they are technical and spooky which keeps them interesting to sight fish in skinny water.
Day 1 I caught 9 and lost a few more, which is pretty phenomenal considering 2- 3 is usually seen as a good day.
Day 2 I couldn't keep them on the hook and only landed 2 of the 6 I hooked.
