Animage April 2024 Issue ft. Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger Main Cast Member Interviews (translations below)
Tumblr media
Publication: March 8, 2024 (after broadcast end)
The kings have become immortal
The Uchu King Dagded Dujardin is the most powerful and very worst, having destroyed many planets in the universe. After a fierce battle, the Royal Sentai finally defeated and destroyed Dagded, ending his 2,000 year long history.
The victory over Dagded would've never been achieved by the power of the kings alone. There were the retainers, who continued to support the king from behind the scenes and were highly trusted by them. The former living, who watched over from the Kingdom of Death, Hakabaka, offered their lives and thoughts to the current kings. And, the key to the descent of the Super Fury Ultimate Complete King-Ohger, was the people of the six kingdoms, who created an "endless chain of small lives." In other words, this was achieved only because the entirety of life on Chikyu sided with the kings and rebelled against Dagded.
At the end of an endless chain, lives are forever connected…These words spoken by Reiniol are surely not only about Chikyu. We, who have witnessed the story of Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger, are also entrusted with the task of weaving an eternal story by connecting our lives together. _
Gira Husty: The evil king. He understands the feelings of the Shugod's and settles the battle against Dagded. He was smiling even as the proposal to unite the six kingdoms fell through.
Yanma Gast: The king of wisdom. Using the power of the King's Proof, he created a plan to counter Dagded. He promises Gira that he'll restore the rest of the scattered Shugod parts.
Hymeno Ran: The queen of splendor. She asked her parents, who emerged from Hakabaka, to treat the injured. While thinking of a name for the new country, she proposes "Great Ishabana."
Rita Kaniska: The immovable king. They're rescued by their former king, Karras, who had been revived from Hakabaka. Although they declared the founding of the new country, they were frustrated because no one could come to an agreement.
Kaguragi Dybowski: The lord of abundance. He received assistance from the former lord, Iroki, who emerged from Hakabaka. When deciding on the name of the new country, he tried to get the middle part.
Jeramie Brasieri: The king of inbetween. He's saved by his mother Nephila, who rushed to him from Hakabaka. As a storyteller, he recorded and left a message for the future people of Chikyu. _
Rushing through daily commotion
-Thoughts on the final three episodes that wrapped up the past year-
Murakami: I felt that it was a performance where everyone's teamwork shined through in their cool and united efforts to face the enemy.
Sakai: When I read the script, I thought that the sense of unity of the citizens joining together to fight against Dagded would be the major highlight.
Watanabe: I thought it was really great to see the development of having the people we've been protecting help us in the end.
Kaku: It was amazing that even all the characters from the movie appeared on TV as well.
Sakai: Nakamura Shido-san also made an appearance through his voice.
Murakami: It was truly extravagant. It makes me want to do another movie (laughs).
Watanabe: It was great to see all the people who have appeared so far at the end, including the guests featured in the movie. Over the past year, everyone was passing the baton, but in the end, we all reached the goal together.
Ikeda: Regarding Jeramie, it was very emotional to start out as the storyteller from the first episode, to then end up passing down the story to future generations.
Kaku: The fact that they tried to create a new country free of national borders, but couldn't come together in the end gave off the charm of the Royal Sentai, huh?
Hirakawa: Right, right. Everyone seems to be looking in different directions, but in reality, they're all looking in the same direction. I felt that the way it ended was really good, giving off that typical Royal Sentai feeling.
Sakai: I was moved by the ending, with the main idea seeming to be based on accepting other countries and races.
-The most surprising development after reading the script?-
Murakami: When Rita……(she notices Ikeda-san raising his hand), please go ahead.
Ikeda: Is it okay if we raise our hands?
All: (laughs).
Ikeda: Then, I'll start. What surprised me would have to be the episode where Racules betrays Dagded (episode 41). The developments from episode 41 were memorable because Racules was portrayed in a charming way.
Murakami: I'm next! I would've never expected the development of Kaguragi using his King's Proof to burn Rita as they seal off Minongan in a blizzard (episode 45).
Kaku: That's for sure. I never imagined Kaguragi and Rita would team up.
Murakami: I also like the fact that activating the King's Proof created a new technique, and the way it was used was abit interesting.
Hirakawa: That position.
Kaku: This (he spreads both of his hands out together with Hirakawa-san)
Hirakawa: (while imitating Kaguragi) "Good night~!"
Ikeda: I wasn't able to watch the filming, so I'm looking forward to watching the broadcast (this was pre broadcast at the time of this interview).
Hirakawa: Kaku-san mistakenly said, "Please go home" (laughs).
Kaku: Yeah. The staff said, "Okay then, we're going home~" and left.
All: (laughs).
Hirakawa: That scene was really cool though (laughs).
Murakami: For the dialogue, "Taselles Mirullia Da'pago" was actually supposed to be said in episode 5. They weren't able to include it due to the length of the episode, but it appeared later in episode 30. I was happy to see that many of the things that we couldn't do for various reasons were picked up in the later half.
Watanabe: Anyone else surprised that time skipped forward two years midway through?
Kaku: Yeah! That was really exciting.
Watanabe: As someone who loves shonen manga, it was hot.
Hirakawa: The visuals changed completely.
Sakai: It was also good in terms of motivation for filming.
Watanabe: The change in costumes made it feel fresh.
Kaku: Right, right. It didn't feel boring.
Ikeda: Another surprising thing was idol Rita, no? (episode 38).
Hirakawa: Even now, I'm still really surprised.
Watanabe: I was surprised at the amount of staff during filming.
Sakai: The number of cameras was just incredible.
Watanabe: Seriously. I think they put the most effort into it out of everything in King-Ohger (laughs).
Kaku: The cameras for behind the scenes use were also rolling, right?
Hirakawa: This was the episode where the staff gave their all with blood, sweat and tears (laughs). It was the first time that there were four cameras rolling.
Murakami: It was movie level. It was like "Oshi no Ko."
Ikeda: We even went to watch the filming in order to drag the perfect smile out of them.
Hirakawa: Thank you for coming at that time, really.
Kaku: The body swap (episode 28), Taisei and the others, those three became babies (episode 45), we got to do alot of things that you can't do in a normal drama……It was alot of fun.
Murakami: It was~. Also, getting turned into a pill bug (episode 15).
Sakai: That's right (laughs). Early on, Gira had alot of episodes with disguises.
Murakami: Things like the "playing dead" strategies (episode 11). In terms of surprises, Hymeno gave Kaguragi an anesthetic in episode 8, right? I was surprised by the scene in episode 42, where it was revealed that Racules had been using it.
Kaku: I also thought that I had killed the carp with poison, so I was relieved and thought, "Thank goodness, Kakuragi didn't kill it." I can say this now, but when I asked Director Yamaguchi Kyohei if Kaguragi had poisoned it at that time, he was hesitant to answer.
Murakami: Maybe the Director didn't know about developments either?
Kaku: Maybe. I was told, "Please make a face that can be taken either way."
Hirakawa: When you think about it, it's incredibly difficult to act out Kaguragi.
Sakai: It felt like Kaguragi had the most scenes where his performance had those kind of hidden meanings.
Murakami: And Racules too. Everyone in the 30s group was like that.
Kaku: There were definitely alot of us.
-Describe this team with a single saying?-
Kaku: Charisma Sentai Superstar.
Ikeda: Yes.
Hirakawa: Then it's settled!
All: (laughs).
Sakai: But, surely that's the only way to go. Everyone's got their own charm.
Watanabe: And they're kings.
Sakai: Higuchi Kohei-kun of Donbrothers also once said, "Everyone has their own charm."
Hirakawa: Heh~!
Kaku: That makes me happy.
Murakami: Not just the characters, but all the actors are also unique, and their differences are interesting.
Kaku: That's for sure. We all had different directions, but there were no fights. The six of us came together with a good balance.
Hirakawa: Everyone was so kind.
Sakai: No one ever got too emotionally involved. Even if there was something on my mind, they wouldn't meddle unnecessarily.
Hirakawa: I feel like we didn't interfere with each other too much.
Sakai: I'd say we were a balanced, calm team.
Ikeda: Would you call it calm charisma?
Sakai: Super Charisma Calm Sentai?
All: (laughs).
Hirakawa: That's too confusing (laughs).
-A message from the kings to the people-
Murakami: Throughout the episodes over the past year, I think there were various messages and words of support that the Royal Sentai were aiming to convey, and I'd be glad if they resonated with you. It would make me happy if this production acts as a hint towards taking your own path in life, and that all of our fans will be able to live in a beautiful world.
All: (applauding).
Kaku: The words you said just now, I'll take it those are the words everyone else was going to use, huh?
All: (laughs).
Hirakawa: Marie just said what we all wanted to say!
Murakami: Is there anything I didn't say?
Ikeda: Something like, "I was very happy to meet you all" or, "Thank you very much for your support."
Kaku: I don't think children understand the content of the story in depth right now. So, I hope that when they grow up, they'll watch it again and see that the kings they admired back then were such great characters.
Watanabe: I have one last thing to say.
Hirakawa: What?
Watanabe: I know this is goodbye for TV, but when you suddenly remember us, I'd be happy if you could come and visit Chikyu to play.
All: Oooh~!! (applauding).
Hirakawa: That's perfect!
Kaku: And with that, finally, our leader!
Sakai: Right……I'd be happy if you'd continue to love this show even after it's over. Thank you very much!
Ikeda: "…..or so it goes."

“I made my courage explode and got it” — The bond between Isami and Smith SHINE FOREVER * (Or The Honeymoon Edition after the wedding <- semi-joking)
Some excerpts from Masami Obari interview on Animedia May 2024 issue
Q. What kind of children were Isami and Smith? Also, which one was a crybaby (or a spoiled brat)?
There was no description of Isami's childhood in the series, but I think it was probably Isami who was a crybaby. This is not a canon setting, so it’s my imagination.
Isami could have an older brother. But that brother died for some reason, and I thought Isami “had to be strong. And I thought of having a backbone that I volunteered to (become) a self-defence officer because I wanted to be useful to people.”
Looking back on the whole story, I think the structure of the story was “time-leap thing.” Wasn't it quite difficult to produce a scenario, such as consistency?
… It was like Mr. Koyanagi (Keigo) of the series composition team forced me to take (laughs). However, the landing point was, because I wanted Isami and Smith to talk about making miracles, so I prioritised drama over logic. (italics mine) From episode 1 to episode 12, I aimed for a work that you can enjoy watching it again and again.
In fact, one of the foreshadowings is the ED video. It may look like an interesting video at first glance, where Isami and Smith are singing half naked, but in fact, that video contains the message that “You can make a miracle by taking off everything and becoming one of the two of you.” In the final episode, Smith responded to Isami's call and returned to the same dimension, but that is the miracle that their friendship had caused.
First, I thought about the ending, and then I made various things while calculating backwards, so it happens naturally. For example, in the first episode, there is a scene where Smith said, “I wanted to be like him” while watching Bravern, but that is rather Bravern, (he’s) talking about Isami who’s inside him (italics mine). If you look back after you understand the previous story, I think the meaning of the scene will change again.
On Lewis Smith’s turquoise green eyes.
That's right. For example, in the scene where Smith reaches out to the light, Smith’s eyes turn green for a moment. That's the same eye colour as Bravern. Also, I think Smith’s (eye) colour was green in the last episode, but I was making it together with that.

Onlynight Crown Translation
Ay! Another translation! And this time it's one of the newer ones! And this must be the translation with the least amount of notes! Hai Glass being the highest amount. Speaking of Hai Glass..
This song is the continuation of Hai Glass (according to Seiyuu Animedia July 2022 issue). I haven't got my copy yet (it's still in Japan 😭), but according to my moot, Yeon, the story is more about Cinderella expressing her happiness in the ball. She knows very well that her time is slowly running out. The lyrics definitely described it perfectly~
I was already excited about this song when I first heard the preview and the description made me even more excited. This is why i decided to translate it ASAP. And in my opinion, Makonyan really improved his English in here! The grammar makes so much sense! His pronunciation really improved, too!
With that being said, I would like to point out the usual...
I am NOT an expert in Japanese and I'm still learning around the ropes. I apologize if there's any inaccurate translation. I did my best to make the translation as accurate as possible. Even if it's not 100% accurate, it still has the idea of what the original is trying to say.
With that being said, please enjoy this masterpiece by Makonyan and I do hope I was able to help my fellow Makonyan fans~
Tumblr media
Onlynight Crown ~ Furukawa Makoto [古川慎]
Let’s all enjoy to our heart’s content!
Just for tonight, I’ll be immersed in a dream
Eyes that were captivated by the glittering ray
The hand that was caught to escape the boring day
Looking over at the fancy table lined up in the greatest hall
In this limited time we have, don't be afraid to smile
In this moment of joy, let's at least dance the night away *⑴
Onlynight Crown, please remember
The shining chandelier
The ringing (sound) of the glass
Ah! Even if tomorrow comes
It will not fade
The scenery of today will remain and not fade away *⑵
The end is still far away
The never ending ringing of the bell and shout of joy
The disappearing candle before the repeated feeling of delight*⑶
Holding on to that melancholic emotion
Diminutive pride that can't be abandoned *⑷
That's the kind of second hand that will not stop anyway
You won't have to even think about it
Onlynight Crown, please never forget
The glittering smiling faces
The superimposed moment
Even if you came back to the boring old days
(You) will become an unbreakable treasure
The all last (finale) has begun *⑸
Us laughing, over and over
Don’t hold back tonight
Let’s dance with me
There isn't even time to say our goodbyes
Let's turn up the heat
Forget me not, please remember
The glittering smiling faces
The superimposed moment
Even if you wake up in the boring old days
(You're) an unbreakable treasure
Onlynight Crown, please never forget
The shining chandelier
The ringing (sound) of the glass
Ah! Even when it comes to an end
It will not fade
The scenery of today will remain and not fade away
Forever
The usual morning came again
But I promised to see you again
⑴. The first bump I have in this translation. I couldn't find a proper meaning to 「明かそう」 (akasou) but this is the closest I can get. It might be inaccurate, but still has the idea of what he's trying to say.
⑵. It's about 90% accurate. Still has the idea of what the original says so don't worry ^^
⑶. I would like to point this out. In the lyrics, the "candle" part is written as 「灯り」 (akari) which means glow or illumination. Was about to say "illumination" but saw in the furigana that he pronounced it as 「キャンドル」 (kyandoru), which is "candle".
⑷. Oh god I never thought this small sentence would made me go insane. Okay, so I'll point this out again. This has a similar issue with note ⑶ where the kanji 「矮小」 is pronounced as 「わいしょう」 (waishou). Btw that's the pronunciation I found for it. But when I looked at the furigana, he pronounced it as 「チャチ」 (chachi). Unfortunately, I have no idea what 「チャチ」 means so I resort to the meaning of 「わいしょう」. Even when I tried to dig the internet for it, it still didn't gave me an answer. The only closest result I got is an orca lol. Update on this issue: I found out some people use 「チャチ」 to say "cheap". Take this information as you will. It could either be "diminutive" or "cheap".
⑸. Ah okay this was actually a pretty interesting find. Oorasu 「オーラス」 is actually a made up English term by Japanese. It's a combination of two words, "all" and "last". I just wrote "all last" lol. But it's also a mahjong term meaning the "last game" or "last round". At least, that is what I got from some native people's explanation. I also found that oorasu can also be equivalent to saying "finale". Which is why I wrote "finale" as an option. I honestly thought oorasu just mean "aura" or something. Surprise, surprise you end up learning a mahjong term.
If you wish to support me, you can do so by donating to my ko-fi ^^ any amount is always welcomed~

Some of Okouchi and Taniguchi's words about Kallen and Lelouch during the airing of Code Geass
Tumblr media
Animedia Magazine July 2008 did an interview about bonds between characters, with Taniguchi toward the China Arc :
Bond with C.C., bond with Nunnally, bond with Suzaku: nothing new. Bond with Shirley: Their friendship bond seems to be changing? She will have her chance to shine after Turn 11 ! Bond with Kallen: According to the director, she is an essential character. She will be captured by Suzaku in the China Arc. Check it out. Bond with Schneizel: Nothing. Only Schneizel saying "what about me?"
Translation by Koshimizu While this one doesn't tell much, that's where we got the fact Taniguchi considered Kallen an essential character, and since it was mentionned in an interview about her bond with Lelouch, you can even say she was meant to be an essential character due to her relationship to Lelouch.
Tumblr media
From Newtype, August 2008 Kouzuki Kallen - The Warrior That Continues Believing in Zero. From Terrorists To The Black Knights Trusting in Zero? or Lelouch? Live As A Japanese Meeting Nunnally and Suzaku Again Versus Knight of Rounds Luciano Back in Battlefield!
Ōkouchi: Lelouch and Kallen's relationship changes after she knows Zero's identity. Fukuyama: Well, honestly, to Lelouch, I don't think Kallen will become a love interest. *laughs* Kallen is the type that doesn't worry too much. She stands up and acts right away. When she needs an answer she asks away. I think she's a totally different type from Lelouch. Ōkouchi: Well, Lelouch is the type that worries too much. *laughs* Kallen also has two roles, Stadtfeld of Britannia and Kozuki of Japan, which she played separately in an awkward way. While Lelouch is using lies to play the role of Zero and a student separately, she's not lying in either of them. Fukuyama: Like what Kallen said in season 1, "this character setting is so wrong for me!" (in Stage 3) *laughs* Note from the translator: Don't jump to conclusions. ;) A VA's opinion doesn't affect the story's direction. Kallen's VA also picks on Zero/Fukuyama a lot off-screen. (Ōkouchi, however, is the storywriter. His opinions do matter. And it looks like he was going to say something before getting shot down. XD) Translation by Koshimizu This interview is actually pretty telling, because while Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu (Lelouch and Kallen's seiyuu) both played through the airing of the show as people who didn't ship Kallen and Lelouch (because of their playful relationship, they played a lot of role together and have a very banter/teasing kind of relationship because of that), Okouchi, writer of the show, on the other hand, tried to advocate for them in this interview (it's much clearer in japanese, that's why the translator said he tried to say something before Fukuyama countered him); He also talks about their differences and similarities while not using those to counter the possibilty of the ship so that was actually a pretty positive interview for them.
Thanks to @codegeassfacts for the interview and allowing me to post it, I had some elements but a lot were missing, if you like Geass, don't forget to check out his blog, it's filled with information about the anime, a sort of alibaba cavern !

Animedia September Art
Tumblr media
Utsumi's comments on the art
ーWe were originally told that this time we'd get an illustration of them eating ice cream since it's summer.
Honestly, we've done so many other illustrations of them eating ice cream that I'm affraid that Reki and the others are going to burst out of their clothing at this rate (painful laugh). But to go along with the original concept of them eating something, we tried to think of something they could eat while skateboarding. We've drawn Reki and Langa eating in a lot of other illustrations, but we hadn't drawn Sakurayashiki and Nanjou in that way yet, and seeing them in plain clothes also give it a really refreshing feeling.
ーAnd so it turned out to be Langa and Sakurayashiki drinking frappuccinos didn't it?!
We originally planned for them all to be drinking them but it turned out to get in the way (lol), so we made it so only two of them were. We made it so Langa is drinking something L size and sweet and probably super high calorie and Sakurayashiki is drinking a limited edition sakura frappuccino.
ーNanjou looks cute stealing a bite from him.
Nanjou's hobby is eating while walking so I'm sure he wants to eat all sorts of things. So that's why we made him steal a bite of Sakurayashiki's drink. We wanted Reki to be holding popcorn, but rather than for walking around town, that's more like something you'd get at a theme park, and you can't really eat it while skateboarding.
ーPlease tell us how you came up with their outfits.
Reki's outfit is really a street style fit for a skater. And I think the colorful parts really suit him. The one who came up with the idea for his wrist band was the color designer Gotou Yukari. I hope we can make it in to merch someday......!
ーLanga has a much more normal shirt style, doesn't he?
We put him in a lot of button up shirts to make him stand out from Reki. His blue shirt with white stripes has a really summery feel so I think it's nice. I put in the order that I wanted it to look different from normal so they ended up wearing baseball caps they never wore in the show.
ーThe feel of them really does change with just the addition of a cap doesn't it?
That's right. They're all wearing one, but especially for Sakurayashiki it gives him a completely different feel from what he's had until now. By the way, Reki is wearing his cap over his headband. Reki almost never takes off his headband.
ーWhile that's true of the cap, it's also refreshing to see Sakurayashiki looking so sporty.
Right(lol)? I made the order for them all to be in their plain clothes, but in that case Sakurayashiki would have just been in a kimono and that wouldn't have been any different from normal. So for a change I thought why don't we put him in casual clothes but I couldn't decide on what to make him wear......, and so I was really troubled over it. I guess since he's an AI skater this is his fashion mode. I thought about putting Nanjou in a running shirt, but that wouldn't be that different from normal either. I felt like him being in a parka would be more rare and it makes him look youthful.
ーWhat sort of story do you imagine to go along with this picture?
I think they definitely have skateboards at their feet. Rather than the four of them making plans together and meeting up, I think Reki and Langa went out together and Sakurayashiki and Nanjou went out together separately and they ran into each other in the city. I think Reki and Langa are probably playing around in the city on their day off. They're probably looking at clothes together, going to eat at fast food places, skating at a skate park and things like that. For Sakurayashiki and Nanjou...... There was probably some reason they went out looking like that? (lol) I'll let the readers imagine about that for themselves ☆
ーAre there any other types of clothes you'd like to make them wear?
Winter clothes. The series takes places from spring to fall so I'd like to see them in warm clothes for the cold weather. I think everyone outside of Langa wouldn't do well with the cold. Especially Reki since he has young sisters, when they go out as a family they probably don't let them go out with anything exposed, so I can't even imagine him in a cold winter. Langa on the other hand, his face wouldn't even change color no matter how cold it was (lol).

If Final Stroke part 1 was rinharu angst, i bet Final Stroke part 2 will be makoharu angst.
You guys have seen the animedia cover right?
If rin helped haru in s2, it might be makoto's turn in the second movie.
Well, I'm fine with it. I like both anyways.
And tho I'm late with the fandom's discussion about the movie, and even tho i haven't seen it yet myself, i'll still put out mine *with a sprinkle of memes (it's more of an overall analysis tho, accuracy not guaranteed)---
• The spoilers point out that haru had another breakdown, wanting to get stronger and faster. In my opinion, it's because haru has only started to learn things the hard way. Come to think of it, he only began to care about his swimming during their nationals back in high school. And he still isn't used to being bested by someone else. Unlike rin who has better knowledge and experience (by haru in freestyle and sousuke in butterfly), haru has no idea how to handle getting worked up when competing against someone, he's not used to it.
Tumblr media
• Haru has another hidden matra. Besides that mantra about being a normal person at 20, he got a hidden one: 'Never depend on others'. Yes, he doesn't say it himself but when you have watched the series several times enough, then you know that haru is quite independent in almost everything; whether at home or school. And more importantly, if you have read the High Speed light novels (if you haven't, i suggest you do so cuz why not), little haru doesn't like the idea of depending on others and was even pissed when he questioned himself if he was just being dependent on water. The only notable time he openly asked for help is when he asked coach azuma to help him with the IM race against ikuya. For the most time, he was being aided by makoto's keen (motherly-like) observation skills (although haru is also keen in his own way).
Tumblr media
• Makoto-Haru-Rin assessment: haru lacks openness, makoto lacks initiative and rin can be impulsive sometimes. Wait, hold up! please put down your pitchforks if you have any. I'll explain it (it's connected with the previous bullet) *Ahemm, so, what i meant by that is, haru tends to keep everything to himself and doesn't feel the need to drag others into his business and rarely openly preaches his feelings, he usually does this if the other one does the talking first. Haru didn't talk about his meeting with rin back in junior high with others, not even with makoto. He kept his plans for the future on hold just because he doesn't want to be bothered by it. Even when pressure kept on bugging him, he never spoke about it with anyone. And what did it did to him? He ends up snapping at others.
Tumblr media
Next is makoto. Yes, he got motherly instincts that makes him take action as what he thinks he should. We know that he has a good grip on haru. Still, there are times that makoto tends to give haru too much space. It's true that he was the one who called rin and told him about haru when they had a fight in s2. But he respects haru's privacy too much that he never asked what was up when haru suddenly decided to quit during high school. There's a good chance that haru would have told everything if only makoto pressed on it. Makoto has the right to know. And what's more, after the friendly competition against albert, makoto was able to hold on for two good weeks without checking on haru. If rin hadn't dragged him to visit haru, who knows until when would makoto stay still. Third blow on makoto: according to movie spoilers, he let the serious talk with haru be cut off just because he was reminded that he had some business with his twin siblings. Come on, i know keeping your word with your family is important but can't he at least be more aggressive when it comes to haru just like what he did in s2? And i think he's already spoiled the twins enough. He could have spared at least ten more minutes with haru. He has the right to question and speak to haru because, again, he has the right to know.
Tumblr media
Now, let's have rin. This guy is prone to confronting others with physicality. Gosh, i salute ai for being able to put up with rin in s1. Remember? He tried to punch haru back in s1. He also has this habit of grabbing others by the collar (rei, sousuke) or their swimming goggles (haru). And if makoto lacks initiative, rin is the opposite who tends to be pushy and impulsive sometimes. Transferring to iwatobi, studying in australia, suddenly joining samezuka relay (as surprise counterattack after seeing iwatobi relay), bringing haru to australia, and quitting freestyle. He triggered haru's switch once in s2 by taunting about future plans so why did he had to do it again in the movie? They are not even halfway through college yet but rin was already rushing haru to come up with a decision about his next step. Not only that, rin shouldn't have brought down the blow on haru so suddenly, saying he'd quit freestyle. He should have known by now not to give haru sudden triggers (somehow i feel this is some sort of karma on haru for suddenly quiting during junior high).
• Another separate bullet for haru (because he's the mc). Haru can be indifferent and passive towards. I remembered that some fans speculate that haru has autism. I think that if it was true, then it's possible to connect it to this. Well anyways, haru is not the most sociable kid around, ever since High Speed light novel. And i was pissed off with his attitude towards nagisa in the second volume (yea just because he's already in junior high). Too bad, the movie version made haru more amiable. Of course, haru can act out of concern like what he did for makoto, nagisa and rei. He can help. But it doesn't change the fact that somethimes he thinks that concerning himself with others' business is such a drag. And when haru wants to make them stay or confront them, it ends up messy because he's not used to 'talking things out with them'. Haru is used to makoto being around him he ended up snapping. Not only because makoto will be away, but also because makoto went ahead of him in coming up with a decision. Let's just say that during that time, he had 'no sense of emergency' (sorry for the term hehe), he put the serious matter on hold. And of course, haru is used to rin giving him the push he needs. He realized his dream with the help of rin. His competitiveness is always driven by rin. No wonder that rin's decision to quit freestyle was a shot to the heart for haru. It's obvious that haru wants to take on albert together with rin. Haru should have been more open about it.
Tumblr media
• Of course, let's add sousuke. Actually, i like sousuke's character development. My concern is that his surgery and recovery was covered way too briefly. And more than that, the build-up of dynamic between him and natsuya feels very unnatural. I know people of the same interest are bound to intersect in some way but it feels off that sousuke and natsuya immediately became familiar with each other. They could have at least dug the events from high speed. Like natsuya could at least point out that he remember sousuke as someone who had "temporary issues" with haru (this is more detailed in the light novel). Actually, instead of concentrating sousuke's interaction with natsuya, it would have been better that the focus was on him and rin. Like sousuke suddenly bringing up to rin that he is thankful that rin is not repeating what he did (when he cut off the correspondence back then) and that their connection and support towards each other are growing strong. It would be nice to see how sousuke is as rin's mental support (i consider sourin as the "bros of the bros" tandem)
Tumblr media
• The ikurin pair. Yeah finally more interaction between these two. Still, i personally think that ikurin pair would have been portrayed better if not for the s3's awful pacing. If only they had compressed ikuya and haru's conflict into 3 episodes instead of 8, then perhaps ikuya would look less dramatic. More on, ikuya and rin would have met in s3 instead of Road to World movie. And a bigger chance for ikuya to be enlightened why haru quit back then. Imagine, what would ikuya do after learning about it. Because i find it off that ikuya only minded that haru quit the club and that even after they have reunited, it's still not know to him. Well, plot and characters felt less natural ever since s3 so... Anyways, ikuya and rin. They are similar when it comes to having fixation towards haru. But how they handle their conflicts with haru are so far apart. Rin acted like a badass, was a grump, and always ready to punch others. But nevertheless, despite his temper during s1, whenever he would calm down and think things over, he can respond properly to others. Just like with ai and rei. He doe Ikuya on the other hand, he acted calm and cold. And whenever hiyori confronts him about haru, ikuya just brushes it off until he finally snapped during that slide scene (which i enjoyed despite being 100% bait and 0% plot). He was too obsessed with haru and shrugged hiyori. He didn't even bother to at least explain properly like a mature athlete. Hiyori was so misunderstood but many don't see that ikuya doesn't treat his friend better. Makes me think that High Speed Ikuya is better than anime ikuya.
Tumblr media
• Our precious iwatobi and samezuka kids. Oh good grief, i've barely read anything about them in the spoilers. They were quite neglected (seriously, s3 started it). If in s2 haru and other's future plans were the main focus, how come the youngsters don't get the spotlight they deserve? Season 3 got 12 + 1 episodes, they could at least have 2 good episodes to focus on what nagisa, rei, gou, and ai are planning for their future. It would have been good if it was included that they have been scouted. Like ai and nagisa being scouted by shimogami while rei gets scouted by hidaka, gou decides to take similar career to makoto; she can also become a sports nutritionist (the proper way lol). Also, since ai and mikhail are relatives, it would have been interesting if it was revealed that ai persuaded his uncle to coach rin (because ai got ai for rin and would do what he can to give support). And sweet momo-kun would be expected to become the next captain (being captain runs in the blood) and have realization that he needs to be more serious in holding the team. I wish the new iwatobi and samezuka relay team were also given more appreciation. By the way, s3's ending theme was so misleading that i thought nagisa and nao would actually meet. I've never seen something more misleading. They could've at least let them meet during the time when makoto brought over the iwatobi kids at the swim club for practice. Imagine nao answering to nagisa's hyper questions. *sigh~ i feel bad for my kids. They deserved better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Then we have our candy boys kisumi and asahi. Kisumi needs more appreciation. I've read somewhere that he should be given some focus too (which i agree to). Like exploring about his basketball club, the others supporting kisumi and cheering him up during a game. He plays such an important role in connecting the others. It's even amazing that he and asahi have maintained connection somehow even after asahi moved out back in junior high. The hint to that is the TYM where the two of them had a phone call. And when it comes to asahi, it would have been good to see a deeper aspect of him. I wish they connected asahi and rin too. I mean it's actually canon, in a way (their dads were buddies). Anyways, asakisu pair is part of the refreshing pairs alongside nagirei. Come to think of it, asahi and kisumi are flexible when it comes to pairings (kisurin, kisuke, asaiku, asarei).
Tumblr media
• Of course, the other characters too. The drama cds were such a blessing since they show more of other characters like teacher ama and coach sasabe. But still, i wish we saw more of them too. Imagine teacher ama's previous profession being revealed to the kids or having a flashback of coach sasabe's high school days (though there's little info on this one). Or better yet, let coach goro and coach sasabe meet, since they are both iwatobi hs alumni. Another wishful thinking for me is to see coach mikhail and ai together (mikhail could've attended the nationals at least to support ai). And a bonus: a meeting between coach mikhail and gou (and have muscle talk all day long). The "vilains" or should i say "powerful rivals" were better off either removed from s3 or introduced early on. I'm not saying they are not necessary, but the plot line would have had a better flow if they have kinjou for s3 and move albert to a latter timeline. *sigh~ makes me think that s3 should have neen 16 eps instead of 12 (13 if you include the 0)

It turns out we might be getting wedding themed SK8 illustration!
Animedia's June issue (released in May) will have an issue called "June Bride" and there will be blank marriage certificates published where you can hypothetically get married to your favorite SK8 character!
My hopes and dreams for the wedding themed illustration (IF there's an illustration, I can't believe they would pass up the opportunity) are:
- Cherry wearing traditional Japanese Shinto groom's clothing. That's a GIVEN.
- Joe wearing a tuxedo in an unusal color, like pink (wink wink) (think Jason Momoa's iconic pink suit)
- Ainosuke/Adam wearing the most outrageous metallic/shiny white suit with gold detailing
- Tadashi wearing a very typical black wedding suit BUT he's carrying Adam bridal style like the 11th episode ED!
- Hiromi wearing a combination of stripes with a contrasting color jacket...like I'm thinking either purple or dark green velvet. Probably no makeup.
- Reki wearing a cropped pant style suit with a relaxed cut, in navy blue and yellow accents, maybe??? NO BANDANA.
-Langa wearing an elegant three piece dark grey suit with a hibiscus corsage lolol. Sorry this boy has like one track mind.
-Miya's suit has cats on it. No I won't elaborate.

[Interview TL] Arurandeisu's Up-Station Web Interview
Interview source can be found here
Tumblr media
Debuting as part of Holostars 1st gen, after recently debuted his 3D in august and celebrated his 2nd year debut anniversary. The man who’s at the edge of his life’s turning point: Arurandeisu. As the first male VTuber who appeared in Animedia Magazine, he had gained quite the attention as of late.
With a light and fun talk as part of his stream's charm and the increase of his activities in Holostars from last year, it's no wonder that the existence of his listeners are part of the thing Arurandeisu noticed the most.
Now with a stronger motivation, the dream he had envisioned for a long time ago had finally taken its leap.
------------------ "Something I did spontaneously" Few talks about his 3D reveal stream ------------------
――To start it off, please introduce yourself to the readers.
Arurandeisu: Holostars 1st gen, the energetic Italian man Arurandeisu. I mainly stream games and especially one where my listeners could participate in it.
――The recent 3D reveal stream is paced so nicely that we didn't realize it was only an hour. Although we think it must've taken you a lot of time to come up with everything, what was it like for you during the preparation itself?
Arurandeisu: Since the reveal dates were already decided way earlier, there's a long period of time where I had to pretend I haven't got anything prepared in front of my listeners even though I am working on it...
In regards to the content, rather than coming up with one however, I normally asked myself "What I wanted to do" as I watched others' 3D reveal streams and looked up various information. Between those times, sometimes I thought "Ah, I want to do this!" and it eventually piled up, that's how I came up with a lot of ideas in the end.
――During the looking-back stream, you said there are times when you have to redo some parts around 2~3 times too, right?
Arurandeisu: I felt satisfied at first, but when I looked back to it there are some parts that made me go "Somehow this feels a bit off" and such, I have a knack for sensing stuff like that you see. There's the screenshot time as well where we ended up putting out a lot of things at once. I thought that "Everyone can just take any screenshots in a timing they desired", so I just let it be (laughs)
――What are your thoughts during the live stream?
Arurandeisu: I came up with a lot of segments but somehow I felt like it moves much faster than I thought. I did everything while thinking about what to do for this scene, the next one and so on. In the end, I don't really have enough time to think about myself in particular.
――At the last part during the interlude of "What a Pastaful World ~Beautighetti World~", the part when you said "Right now, Arurandeisu is having the most fun!" leaves quite an impactful feeling to us. What drove you to blurt that out?
Arurandeisu: That's because I felt relieved that everything is going smoothly without a big blunder, "I don't want it to end but I'm glad it's going fine until the end."-that kind of feeling. Also because unlike the normal stream, I don't have time to look at the live comments so I wanted to say something like "Everyone must've been having fun now, so it'll be fine, at least I also enjoyed this one hour as much as they do." as well.
It's something I didn't plan to say at first so it was rather spontaneous. Now that I think about it, I said it on the right timing I guess (laughs)
------------------ After tackling the "Blue Axolotl", I began to understand the joy in playing Minecraft ------------------
――Normally you often have a good amount of planned streams, how did you come up with that one in the first place?
Arurandeisu: I often take memos on anything that seems interesting. Then after looking through it again to give me a clear image on how it would be, then I proceed into streaming it.
Recently, fake-horror segments are quite nice from what I’ve seen. It’s something I've always wanted to do back then but since it requires a lot of listener's participation, I have to measure the scope of this plan while seeing the amount of watchers so I can do it at the right time. Since Youtube started having their "shorts" feature recently, I thought now is truly the perfect time.
――During this summer, there were lots of Minecraft-related streams from what we've seen. Especially the Blue Axolotl search that took a lot of time, it was quite the spectacle when it was finally born.
Arurandeisu: We can practically do anything in Minecraft so in a way it's actually much harder to come up with a particular goal, so it’s harder to get hooked into it.
So when talking about that, "Streaming with the goal of hatching the rare creature Blue Axolotl" is a rather easy-to-understand goal. Though it’s already proven how hard it is to hatch them out... (laughs). In-between this, I manage to understand how Minecraft works and enjoyed it even more, like the so-called "Reckless Minecraft" where we played in hardcore mode as we try to defeat ender dragon, then creating equipment for the other Holostars members to help out in creating a comfy village life in "Temma-village expansion plan" as well.
――Not only streaming games, you've also started doing DJ-ing and DAW streams as well. Is there a particular thing that makes you pick up new things?
Arurandeisu: In the first place, I’d like to challenge myself with new things so I also have a pretty wide range of interests. For instruments, I could play electric guitar, bass and piano but all of these are things that would eventually bore you out once you managed to play them, so in the end you might go "Well I got to level 30 in here so might as well move on to something else" instead. So you're becoming more eager to try out other things.
As for DJ stuff it was something that stems from Holostars' previous event “Our Own Kickoff Party 2021", where I managed to talk with someone there who also worked as a DJ. I managed to gain a lot of knowledge out of it so I think I was quite lucky there, the more you dig it becomes more fun you know!
------------------ The reason for "Focusing in Holostars" ------------------
――Recently you’ve started streaming 2-3 times a day, and it seems it has affected your lifestyle pace rather nicely.
Arurandeisu: From last year until december-ish, I've been working a lot along with my streaming activities, so I could only stream during night-time at most. By the time I managed to focus myself on Holostars, I was able to make use of most of my time efficiently.
――We thought the decision was already decided way before but, what made you finally take the leap?
Arurandeisu: To be honest, back before I joined Holostars, I had quite the silly dream... I wanted to be a hero.
I admired Kamen Rider from long ago, but thinking realistically there's no such thing in the real world. Then I began to think what kind of possible "Hero" I could be, "As long as I'm alive, I'd like it if everyone that is involved with me in a way will be able to become happy, so there will be less amount of sadness around us". For me, that's the most I could be as a Hero.
Ever since I joined Holostars and started streaming, I often see comments that convey how much they enjoyed what I'm doing and some who have sent me letters or replies saying "Aran's stream has made me feel more positive!".
I started to think "If I stayed here, I think I'll be able to make everyone happy." And after a year has passed, that thought has become much more real and stronger. I gained even more support from everyone so as a result, I started thinking that I wanted to do a lot more. In the end I came up with a decision to "Steel up my own resolution!"
――So that's how it all started...!
Arurandeisu: I've been living my life doing what I love, so that's how I ended up doing live-streaming, which happens to give a lot of people happiness. That kind of win-win like relationship is what makes it good. Live-streaming is truly the best!
――To see "How far I’ve come to reach my dream" it looks like the listener's reaction has become the deciding factor itself it seems.
Arurandeisu: Or more like it is the only factor since I cannot see how they look nor how they react. So be it through Illustrations, clipped video, replies or even comments about interesting parts they liked, all of these are a form of support that manages to find its place to me. It's also thanks to all those reactions that I manage to get even more energy.
------------------ Now is the right time to get to know Arurandeisu and Holostars! ------------------
――Are there new things that you'd like to challenge someday?
Arurandeisu: I've always liked moving my body around from the start so honestly I wanted to try almost anything that I could reach. Since it's much easier to show my expression now, I thought getting into variety show-like things might be good too. Also it might be impossible but I'd like to do "A week off in an uninhabited island." challenge as well...
――It is quite hard in a lot of ways, but we'd also love to see that kind of content!
Arurandeisu: And since I grew up surrounded by games and manga culture, appearing in one of these works is also part of my dream itself. There's one occasion where I appeared in the extra pages of a manga called "Sabageppanashi". It was a series I really liked and had been reading for a long time so I was really happy about it and it became a lasting memory. I also like to appear in online or television shows one day as well.
――Moving forward, this time it’s a question from Aragami Oga-san who appeared in our previous interview. "If you were allowed to have a rent with no limit, what kind of place would you like to live in?"
Arurandeisu: The place I live in right now is quite narrow to be honest, almost like there's only enough for a streaming space. So for starters I'd like to have more rooms, from the streaming room, bedroom, and living room all on its own. Also since I like collecting goods from any games I've cleared, it would be nice if I could have a space to display them all.
I like the idea of having an underground basement too, also it's definitely better to have a bigger bathroom. The current bathroom I had is quite small so I often use the shower instead so I could use up the hot water. That's why having a bigger bathroom and adding a sauna place or a stone sauna is definitely a must. A 2-storey building with 1 basement would be good, also if it comes with a parking lot that would be even nicer too.
――Oga-san who gave you this question is part of the same gen with Kageyama Shien who previously appeared here as well, and both of them made an appearance during your 3D reveal stream. From Arurandeisu's viewpoint who is part of the 1st gen and as their senior, what does the existence of these two mean to you?
Arurandeisu: This applies to everyone in Holostars of course but for us, there isn't really a border between senior-junior in here. That's why rather than a junior, it's more appropriate to call them as a friend that I could rely on. In a sense, everyone also started acting like that to each other as well.
Shien-kun is a mafia boss so in a way, he's a guy you could count on. He's quite sensitive to his surroundings so he definitely becomes the type that will give you a helping hand. The one time he's been really helpful is whenever everyone wants to eat, he would always take the initiative to look up a good place. That one was really a big help (laughs).
I often talked with Oga-kun because we had a lot of things we both like in common. That guy knew a lot of manga and various subcultures so we could talk about many things. Oga-kun also often becomes the one who started the conversation while we were gathering in the waiting room.
――That's quite an unexpected part you won't see often on live streams! That aside, what kind of question would Arurandeisu-san ask the next person?
Arurandeisu: I'd like to ask them "If you could make one of your dreams come true, which one would it be?"
――Understood. Lastly, please let us know if you'd like to drop any kind of messages or announcement
Arurandeisu: Whether it's me or Holostars as a whole, if you start watching us now it will definitely feel like seeing our growth. It also doesn't have to be me, because among all the 9 people in Holostars, each of them is a person full of different quirks and personalities. With this kind of group I'm sure you'll be able to find someone that you will like.
――So, now is truly the right time in your opinion.
Arurandeisu: That's right! It's definitely now, otherwise you would start thinking "I should've watched them earlier~!" afterwards. With the live concert in December coming up, I'm doing my best to let my viewers be 200% as happy when they watch me too. So it would make me glad if everyone could look forward to it as well.

Don’t Miss the Seriously Insane Decisive Battle Card!
After accumulating numerous dramatic incidents, “the time of the decisive battle” is finally arriving for a number of this term’s noteworthy animes. What sort of developments will they show… the seriously insane moment is near!
What Does Sesshōmaru (biological father) Think of the Yashahimes (daughters) As They Head Towards the Decisive Battle While Baring the (binding) Spell on Their blood?
“Hanyō no Yashahime” is nearing its climax and the insane truths like the details on how the three Yashahimes were separated from their parents have been revealed. During Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha’s first confrontation with Kirinmaru, Sesshōmaru appeared but contrary to the “emotional father-daughter reunion” we were expecting, Sesshōmaru left without saying a word. It appears Sesshōmaru is concerned about the twins’ mother, Rin, who is currently sleeping within the Tree of Ages. What he is trying to do and what he thinks of his daughters continues to be a mystery. On the other hand, Kirinmaru’s elder sister, Zero, is steadily reaching out her evil hand towards the Yashahimes. As half-demons and a quarter-demon (respectively), can Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha awaken their true strength in order to attack that evil hand… …?!
Character Bios
Higurashi Towa Sesshōmaru’s daughter and Setsuna’s older twin sister. She loses her demonic powers on the night of the new moon and her hair turns black. She treasures Setsuna and is slowly regaining their sisterly bond.
Setsuna Towa’s younger twin sister. Having had her sleep stolen by the Dream Butterfly, she is unable to sleep. She possesses strong demonic powers, but they are sealed by Monk Miroku.
Moroha The daughter of Inuyasha, a half-demon, and Kagome, a human. Having been separated from her parents, she was raised by the wolf demon tribe. When rouge is applied to her lips, her demonic power awakens, causing her to transform into “Beniyasha, the Destroyer of Lands” and go on a rampage.
Sesshōmaru Towa and Setsuna’s father. He protected his daughters immediately after their birth as Zero aimed for their lives, but he currently does not try to get involved with the two. His true motive behind that has yet to be revealed.
VS the People Who See It Through, Interview with Komatsu Mikako (Role of Setsuna)
“Please look forward to the climax that will be beyond imagination!”
— Looking back at the broadcasting up until now, which episode made you think “That was insane!”
Episode 14 where the truth behind the forest fire and Towa and Setsuna getting separated was revealed. I mean Homura’s (the one who caused the fire) intense love for Tamano was amazing. It was warped but his deep, strong love was incredible. On top of that, the shocking development of Zero being the mastermind behind Homaru and Sesshōmaru being present really made that episode “insane” in more ways than one.
— While there is curiosity about Sesshōmaru’s relationship with Zero and his motives, how do you yourself see him Komatsu-san?
Sesshōmaru doesn’t say much and his actions are hard to understand but I think he’s a character who always proceeds in his own logical way. As such, I think the current Sesshōmaru moves not because of the simple principle that “Love for a human has sprouted” but rather it is the result of him looking deeply at himself from different angles such as the curiosity at his own change of heart and/or looking at the general drift of affairs from the standpoint of demon. Also, I have a feeling that he has this belief that “He will protect and treasure things that are within his reach” so I feel real at ease about that. From Setsuna’s standpoint, I want to look forward to how he will show that through his actions from here on.
— The climax is right before our eyes, but could you give us hints as to what sort of future developments will unfold?
A development that is like “I didn’t imagine this kind of finale…!” awaits. Personally, I have a feeling that the “Test of Courage and Cowardice” that Sesshōmaru spoke of will become a keyword going forward. What did Sesshōmaru entrust to Towa and Setsuna and how did he feel? From here on is our critical moment. There is still the matter of the Dream Butterfly with Setsuna and many mysteries remain. I hope that one day, (the twins) can confront Sesshōmaru as father and daughter and that the things that they desire and have been entrusted with tie together. Please look forward to it!

1. Sesshōmaru
Sesshomaru’s level of mysteriousness stands out and I have a feeling he is continuing to evolve. However, after recording all the way to the final episode, I feel like the times where his intentions come through in a more straightforward way is increasing.
2. Riku
He’s a character whose investigations about him progress somehow so Riku’s level of mysteriousness is high. His human like sense and his birthplace are things I’m curious about.
3. Jyuubee
I don’t think Jyuubee of the corpse shop is a villain, but he seems to know things through his connection with Riku and he might surprisingly have an ulterior motive…? Although he could just be a regular middle-aged man (laughs)
We Asked Komatsu-san! The Enemy Prize
Who’s the number 1 enemy character you’re curious about?
Riku
“He calls Zero “elder sister” but we still don’t know what his connection to her is and Riku himself mutters things that have a profound hidden meaning so I feel like he has some kind of painful circumstance. Riku is the number 1 enemy (?) I wonder about.” Komatsu.
Cannot Overlook These Enemies
Those who are too dangerous
Kirinmaru A beast king on par with the Dog General (Sesshōmaru’s father). Having once received a prophecy from the Shikon Jewel that he “Would be destroyed by an existence that is neither human nor demon”, he is cautious of the 3 Yashahimes.
Zero Kirinmaru’s older sister. Due to her ties with the Dog General, she despises humans and half-demons. She is the mastermind behind the forest fire that separated Towa and Setsuna.
Oh Snap! The Yashahimes or Kirinmaru… Whose side is Sesshōmaru on?
When he sealed Inuyasha in the black pearl, Sesshōmaru behaved as though he was Kirinmaru’s ally. How he will deal with Zero who is after his daughters; pay attention to Sesshōmaru’s actions in the last 2 episodes!
Illustration Description
Towa and Setsuna prepare themselves while having complicated feelings towards Sesshōmaru. Moroha also faces the decisive battle with her characteristic cheerfulness.

Chou Animedia Interview with ChouCho
Tumblr media
“I made this song with care, so that it would not lose to the anime’s sensible portrayal.”
ChouCho is the one in charge of the ED theme of “Tsurune”. It was released in her single “Orange-iro”. An interview asking about the unknown story of its production was published in Animedia. Here, in Chou! Animedia, we are introducing the whole interview, including the parts that could not make into the article.
Raw || Index || My Ko-fi  ( ╹◡╹)っ’・*
Depicting the delicate and simplistic worldview that the anime has.
——“Tsurune —Kazemai Koukou Kyuudou-bu—”, of which the ending theme you are responsible for, has an archery club as its setting. ChouCho-san, it seems you were also part of an archery club in high school.
Yes. Which is why I was extremely happy to be the one singing this ending theme. The anime’s staff apparently did not know about it, so they were very surprised when I said, “I actually used to be in an archery club” (laughs).
——What was your impression from reading the original work?
The descriptions of Japanese archery were quite real, so the feelings from back when I myself was engrossed in it were revived. For example, while the atmosphere of the tournaments was stiff, there was something awe-inspiring to it, which I believe to be a peculiarity of Japanese archery, and I could feel even that air from the original novel. It was written that realistically, so it had me very touched.
——That sense of tension is surely a comfortable thing, right?
There is something I cannot describe with words at all about the nervousness and mood from the instant when you release an arrow after everyone silently goes dead-still, so I would like people to feel them from the novel and the anime.
——What was the cue for you to join the archery club, to begin with?
In a club introduction that happened soon after I enrolled into high school, I saw a demonstration of drawing a bow by an upperclassman dressed in hakama, and I joined the club because I looked up to that hakama look. Our school was not very strong, so we did not leave behind any particularly great records, but I have memories of it being extremely fun, including that peculiar sense of mental strain. While remembering myself from back then as I read the original novel, I felt like doing archery again for the first in a long time. After doing a research, I found that there were countless archery dojos in the metropolitan area and that experienced people can rent a space, so I want to try it when I have the time.
——“Tsurune” is about club activities and also a story about friendships of youth, so what did you feel sympathy for?
There are scenes where team competitions happen, and I was able to read them while overlapping with my own tournament experiences. The shooting of each person is very important in team competitions, so just one misstep ends up greatly affecting the team. But on the other hand, if your companions hit, you can take over that feeling and hit too. It is your own fight, but there is an aspect of it where you receive support from the core of the team. I read the novel while recalling this kind of teamwork so unique to Japanese archery.
——Does any character pique your interest amongst the ones that appear in it?
Takehaya Seiya-kun, I guess. He takes care of the protagonist, Narumiya Minato-kun, in an almost motherly way, and I thought that was delightful. In the anime, characters who had not yet been written about in detail in the original work show up in early stages, and I think that is also one of the highlights. There are three female club members as well, but there still has been no illustration of them in the novel, so I was looking forward to seeing their appearances, as well as more of their personalities and what kind of girls they are, in the anime.
——Additionally, it is also a hot topic that Fuuki Harumi-san, the person who composed the soundtrack of NHK’s Taiga Drama “Segodon”, was the one in charge of this anime’s soundtrack.
I also watched the drama “Segodon” every week and thought its music was wonderful. “Tsurune” is a series with a particular, warm mood to it that is similar to “Segodon”, so I was wondering just what kind of music it would turn out to have, and although the same goes for the animation, I was looking forward to the soundtrack too.
——I thought that the ending theme of “Tsurune”, “Orange-iro”, is a song where one can picture a scene with the five main boys walking back home from club activities side by side. How was your impression when you first listened to it?
The one who made the lyrics and musical composition was Fujii Mariko-san, and it was the first time I worked on a production with her. There is a tranquility to the composition that fits perfectly with the worldview of “Tsurune”, and you can feel warmth from the song. The tune is also easy to listen, and I thought it was a simple melody that can calm you down. Kyoto Animation-san’s works all have a characteristic sensibility to them, so I felt that I wanted to make this song with care, in order not to lose to the anime’s sensible portrayal.
——It is a very simple and idyllic song, right?
Right. That is the kind of melody it is, so rather than singing it clearly, I thought it was more suitable to value the simplicity that this song has. I sang it being conscious of its simplistic warmth, bearing an image that I was not singing it, but instead leaving the words there one by one while observing a distant view.
——But it is not as if the song is just simple; there is a feeling that the song structure strikes the rhythm, right?
Agreed. It was a tune with a pattern that I had never sung before until now. When I was only aware of the rhythm that has a melody to it, I would feel like singing it no matter what, so it took me a bit of time to be able to change my feelings so that I could speak the words without being conscious of the rhythm. As a result of myself fumbling around in order to correspond to what the song demanded with all my might like this, it became a song that bears an image of me purposely erasing the quirks of my usual way of singing.
——But ChouCho-san, it solidly expressed the sense of transparency and carefreeness in your voice that are so typical of you.
I am happy if that is the case.
——About the title, what do you think “Orange-iro” (“The Color Orange”) represents?
Orange is a color with an image of warmth rather than heat. I believe the orange hues of sunset represent the passion inside one’s heart and the radiance of youth. I think people imagine red when they talk about passion, but I believe that, rather than this primary color, having an unclear side to it is more youth-like. Shouldn’t it be a color that is neither red nor yellow, which burns while bearing complicated emotions?
——Lastly, this is something that will happen a little farther into the future, but next February, Tokyo Hakuju Hall will hold your fifth acoustic live, “ChouCho Acoustic Live ‘Naked Garden’ Vol.5”. “Orange-iro” seems like it would be a good match for an acoustic version.
I think it definitely is. I want to try this song out playing the acoustic guitar by all means, so I will do my best at practicing it.
——The last live was in June, and you uploaded a photo of yourself with your acoustic guitar on social media back then, right?
That guitar is something my father, who plays guitar as a hobby, passed down to me, and its model is called Gibson Hummingbird. It is a very good guitar, and I look like I am good at it thanks to its sense of presence, but the truth is that I do not play very well (laughs). The guests watch over me warmly, telling me, “Do your best!”. I will work hard at practice to be able to play more until the next live, so to the people who will have the time, please feel free to come have some fun.

“In the upcoming Pokemon anime, a new protagonist called Gou will accompany Ash in his adventures around the world.
In a recent interview from Japanese anime magazine Animedia, the voice actor for Gou spoke about the character’s appearance. In particular, he touched on Gou’s somewhat androgynous look – which features hair tweezers, longer eyelashes, and a sleeker body profile. These features may have confused a number of fans at first, generating some discussion about whether Gou was actually a boy or girl.
As it turns out, Gou’s unique design was no accident! In the interview, Gou’s voice actor revealed that the anime’s creators wanted a character that neither looked like a man or a woman – perhaps in a similar vein to Pokemon GO’s Blanche.”
