So there are two key differences between Jacob Barber in the Book vs how he was in the show.
First of all Jacob absolutely killed Ben in the book. It’s not even up for debate. Jacob is much more colder in the book and the evidence against him,,, it’s a lot more than the tv show portrayed. In the show, Jacob’s innocence is more up for the debate and I believe that Show Jacob did not kill Ben.
Secondly, Jacob in the book is more queer coded. There’s a scene when Derek is on the stand and he straight up says that Jacob could be gay, and if that he was, he’s cool with it. Not cool with the murder though. Even Andy at points in the book questions Jacob’s sexuality. I fully believe that Book Jacob was queer, maybe not gay, but queer. In the tv show idk.

Chris Evans is getting around a lot these days isn’t he! Was absolutely gripped with this I was so invested in the story and unsure as to what o actually believed. The ending however, felt a little rushed. It like dropped a lot in very quickly and then very abruptly ends and I still have questions. I feel that was the point and the vision they had but it doesn’t feel like closure for me and I don’t feel like there could be another season feasibly. Had a few shows like this lately and I don’t know what it is that I’m searching for but I always thing I’ve found it until the end of a season.

What if you suspect your son of murder?
How should parents act when a son is tried for murder and their child denies it? Of course, you have to believe your child's words and use all means to prove his innocence. But in the process of following the incident, I thought, 'Wouldn't my child really do it?' What if there is a suspicion?
The series dealing with this topic is ‘Defending Jacob’. Ben, who is about to graduate from middle school, is stabbed by a knife and found dead. The prosecutor ‘Andy’, who is in charge of this case, investigates a suspected child sexual abuser. Suddenly Jacob, who is Andy's son, is caught by the police.
His fingerprints were found in Ben's clothes. Andy has since changed his position from the prosecutor in charge of the case to a suspect's parents. He do everything to defend his son.
A similar movie comes to mind. It's a Korean film ‘Mother' by Bong Joon-ho. But the narrative is a little different. There are enough cause for a mother to protect her son in the movie. There is a possibility that her son is a little short of it, so it is possible to overturn what others have done. Police do not investigate properly and try to close the case in a hurry by singled out his son as the culprit. The lawyer only talks about money and doesn't find a way to save his son. It's understandable that a mother is trying to step up and save her son in this situation.
But Jacob is not. Rather, it makes me think that a calm and cold expression would have done the act. When he was 5 years old, his mother saw that he aimed at his friend's head with a bowling ball and his mother blocked it. Also, he seems to have a killer’s gene because his paternal grandfather is in prison for committing a brutal killer. It's crucial proof if he wrote a novel detailing the scene of the murder after the last incident.
The behavior of the parents was different when they thought that their son had been able to do it enough. Andy tried to deny his son's behavior until the end. But Laurie became more and more unreliable in her son. Father mobilized his blood ties, connections, legal knowledge, and more to find ways to win the trial. On the other hand, the mother failed to deny her son's murder in her heart after seeing her son's past, counseling results, and emotionless attitude. Eventually, the three of them couldn't look at the same place, and they stayed at home without words.
Whether parents believe in the murder of their son or not, the resolution of the case should be as follows.
1) Accurate fact-finding
2) Apologies for the act of inflict
3) Recovery for damage
4) Punishment for the wrong
Andy abandoned Jacob's knife, which made the fact-finding untrue. Neither Andy, Laurie, or Jacob formally apologized to Ben’s bereaved family. There was no way to save Ben, and the loss that Ben’s parents felt didn’t heal. It was not revealed who the perpetrator was, and the end of the case was not punished. The procedure doesn’t followed and the drama series ends with no clear conclusion.
The drama is over, but there are still problems to be solved. Let's assume that Jacob committed murder and look at the problem. Why did Jacob kill Ben? Several causes arise in the trial described in the series.
'Jay Cup was bullied by Ben’, ’The Barber family (Billy, Andy and Jacob) were born with killer’s genes’ However, as the incident suddenly closed, the cause could not be found.
Let's ask the essence that is as important as finding the cause. 'What should we do to make sure that doesn't happen?’ First, let's think of a case where Jacob has a killer’s gene and can't stand the desire for murder. Like Dexter’s father, can Andy be trained to take his son’s murder needs to criminals? No matter how criminal you are, a person has no right to punish others at will unless they are God. Then is it right for parents to punish their children like Jacob's mother? It's not appropriate either. Even parents do not have the authority to decide the fate of their children. The best way parents can take that parents are looking for a medical way to control their murder needs, and need to help son live in a controlled environment.
Next, what should we do if Jacob committed murder because of harassment? Jacob's parents couldn't create a relationship where their children could talk about bullying. Andy and Laurie had no idea how Jacob actually lived in school. Derek, who thought his parents were his son's friend, singled out Jacob as a murderer. They didn't know which Internet site Jacob mainly visited, and what he wrote on social media. Maybe the son didn't think he could confide in his parents. If the relationship with the school people was out of place, they had to find another community where Jacob could have a good relationship. Tragedies could have been avoided if they had found someone to be recognized and talked to in other groups, including family, community, and more.
It seems rare to kill people because of school bullying, but it's not. Many things happen every day in our reality. It's just that the victim doesn't show up well to punish himself. If you talk about my experience as a teacher, there was a student who didn't want to come to school. Following the reason, he was bullied by classmates and refused to go to school to avoid it. The ethics teacher says to me that the student once said 'suicide' in class. The first thing to know these things is to persuade the parents of the victim.
“You shouldn’t force him to come to school. You have to think about your child's feelings first. I will be able to keep up with his studies later, and I will make an administrative treatment. So parents can protect your child well. Now the child needs someone who will listen to him completely. If you tell me what your child said, I'll solve it in the middle. I’ll meet and talk to wrongdoing students and their parents as soon as possible.”
The most important thing when this happens is to understand the emotional situation of the affected person well and restore it. The punishment for the perpetrator is next. In my case, fortunately, the consultation with the two parents was good, and the relationship between the students became smooth.
However, not all relationships are resolved this well. Many schools hold school violence committees several times every year, it doesn't solve it, so it also spreads into lawsuits. In severe cases, something that should not happen, where the victim student commits suicide. When school violence occurs, the behavior is clear if the adults involved should take it. Students and parents who have committed harm should sincerely apologize to the victim. The parents of the affected student must protect their children. Problem solving, including investigation of issues, is handled by administrative agencies such as schools and the Office of Education. However, if school violence occurs, the case cannot be resolved properly, as in the case of Jacob.
