maybe moving on is better? -- mason mount x reader.
helloo! first fic, thinking about making this into a three-part series!!
quick summary: after cutting of ties with mason you find yourself in a tough spot. until a certain night where you see yourself you didn't imagine being.
Sometimes it's hard to let go. Let go of yourself, be free, and be on your own. It's significantly harder to move onto reality, where you look for any trace of him. His scent, brown eyes, brown hair locks, and the iconic blue jersey.
You had wished it was easier to let go, but it was difficult. How could you let go of such precious and cherished memories? How could you forget the late-night talks that brought you happiness? Let go of the deep and profound love you had for him.
Anywhere you go, there he is, billboards, coffee shops, even small posters with his face and name plastered on street lamps. You wanted and wished so bad to let go of him. But what exactly is holding you back?
Is it the fact that you two grew up inseparable in your teenage years, or him being the only one there when no one else was? To say the least, you weren't ready. You weren't ready to give up on him, hope buried deep inside you, hoping he’d come back.
Sometimes even walking around your flat, you vision him laughing, scolding you for not wearing socks in the winter, helping you cook dinner, cuddling on your creme sofa. Am I crazy for still holding onto him? Maybe. But who cares?
Vivid images of the way you and he left things replay and cause nightmares. Those images were not letting you sleep or even do anything right. His words filled with venom and pure hate, never seeing this side of him confused the hell out of you. The redness in his eyes as he walked away from the broken promises, the happy ever after we created.
“So what y/n? I'm doing what I want. How is it selfish for me to leave you?”
“You're not a kid anymore grow the fuck up.”
“You're gonna cry, really? How pathetic, just look at you.”
“Are you seriously going to hold me back? I'm leaving, please don't contact me, as I wish nothing to do with you…”
Even his family were confused as to why you wouldn't show up to certain events, it was complicated. You didn't want to throw him under the bus like that, you found any excuse that in the end, always worked.
After many months you still weren't the same, everyone around you saw that. You felt weak, empty, sad, numb, lost, afraid, you were slightly slimmer, a new haircut below your bra-line shaped into layers.
Slowly but surely, you were going to grow into a new person. After a drunk night with your two best friends, confessing everything, the stolen kisses, unexpected gifts, comforting him after a match, and the photo album still hanging in your office, it was time to move on.
And so you did, applied to jobs, stepped out of your comfort zone, made new friends, grew a passion for painting, got rid of his items that were still laid out in your flat, and even traveled a bit, helping others while at it.
Sure, there were times when you wanted to see how he was, what he was up to, but it wasn't worth it after finding out he was dating a girl. Remembering the pure disgust and punch to the stomach when you saw the headline and picture of his broad arm wrapped around her waist kissing her deeply.
In the end, that could've been you, but it wasn't, that was the hard part. You constantly blamed yourself for how things ended, wishing he was still present in your life. Should have you begged him harder, gave him the space when asked?
After your crazy week at work, your family was invited over to his family’s house. It had been a while since a homecooked meal which made you decide to go. You put on a comfortable warm outfit as the November weather wasn't going to get any warmer.
Quickly tying your laces, and grabbing your bag, you head out for the short 30-minute drive. Pulling into their driveway brought old memories from when you two snuck out, played tag in the front yard, making snowmen and snow angels during the holidays.
And once again, his face appeared in your mind. How the bridge of his nose would get red in the winter, his freckles showing under the glowy sun, his smile when he would score goals in the mini goalie, all that made you miss him even more.
To say the least, everyone was shocked to see you there, his mother cried hugging you tightly, “Goodness y/n it has been a while since I’ve seen you, sweetie! Where the hell have you been?” she pulls back smiling, wiping her tears away.
“I recently got a new job that has cost me to stay out longer. I'm living in central London with a german shepherd, finishing my last year before finally graduating. It's so nice to see you again, everyone” you say with a shaky voice.
After greeting others you help out in the kitchen, cutting up vegetables, prepping the table, and singing along. Jaz's daughter begs to play dollies with her, so now you're seated in a corner criss-cross watching her dress them all up.
She asks you for opinions and makes you hold them, this one is quite the chatterbox. Your stomach drops as you hear his father comment about him, “Mason should be here soon, he's bringing the wine I asked for.”
This would be the first time in months you’ll see him, after everything. Were you mentally and physically prepared for that… no. Anything could go wrong so fast, your overthink gets its best of you, would he be mad you're here? Would he talk to you? Does his family know were not friends?
“Sorry y/n but do you mind taking her upstairs for her nap? I would go but my mother wants me to help her finish off,” Jaz goes up to you wiping her hands with a cloth. You agree, carrying Summer upstairs while she cuddles into your arms. After rocking her gently she's out.
Loud commotion and cheering make you understand he’s here. You avoid any eye contact making you way over to Jaz but notice he’s staring deep into your soul. You practically feel his eyes burn into your figure.
His voice, that stupid voice, the voice that helped you relax, helped you sleep, talked to you when you felt lonely, but that exact same voice who told you to go away. Building up the courage and confidence you look up, immediately making eye contact with him.
“Look y/n is here! She finally came out of the dug-up hole she had been living in,” his mom motioned at you. You nod your head slightly and nod. A flash of hurt runs into his eyes, yet a confused face plastered on.
No one seemed to notice, going back to what they were doing. You sighed trying to hold back tears and the upcoming headache. “So what really happened between you two, I'm not blind y/n. You avoided coming here for a while,” Jaz's question catches you off guard.
“We had our differences, said hurtful things to each other, and decided it was best to stop being friends. He wanted to focus on his career more, and I as well. Its… it's just confusing and hurtful…” you bite the inside of your cheek.
She sighed deeply, giving you a hug, you wanted to be honest and tell her you didn't need pity, but deep down you felt safe in her arms. You pulled back with a smile, “But it's okay now. It seems like he’s doing okay, doing big things at Chelsea and the England team as he always wished, I imagine.”
“But what about you? How are you doing?” the fact she's willing to hear you out almost makes you burst into tears, “Honestly, not well… I'm under a lot of pressure right now, and just stress. I can promise you, it's nothing, just work,” at that moment your phone rings, a call from you boss.
After excusing yourself you go outside, the cold air hitting your skin making you shiver, goosebumps appearing. “Yes hello? I apologize I'm not home right now James, of course, I’ll send them as soon-, yes I understand the consequences, have a good night, bye!”
You lean against the railing, sighing and taking deep breaths, trying to pull yourself together before going back outside, “who was that? Your boyfriend?” his voice startles coming off a bit jealous, maybe even mad? You scoff at his words, preparing to yell at him before being cut off.
“Y/n? We need to talk.” Mason says. You quickly stand up wrapping your arms around yourself. He notices your cold body, reaching to take his hoodie off but you stop him, “No. It's fine, what did you need to tell me?” your voice coming out firm and serious.
You take your time roaming your eyes at him. Those months did do some small changes to him. His hair was a bit shorter, a full beard, maybe a bit more muscular?
A long pause of silence appears before he speaks up again, “Why… why are you here? I'm so confused, there are some things I wanted to-” he doesn't get the chance to even finish speaking as his father emerges at the doorway.
“Mason your girlfriend is here.”

(my original ramble from *cough* months ago that fuck it I should just post because I’m going to have to start over and this will no longer make sense once I finish the whole show)
In fairness, I've still only watched 8 episodes and I've seen more than one person say the thing doesn't properly get going until around episode 10, but I struggle to understand why Chuno is so highly regarded and enjoys almost universal acclaim. Maybe the momentum does pick up, but I don't know how much that's going to help since pacing is not really the problem I have with how it's going so far. The pacing is fine, my problem is lack of direction and lack of heart. It doesn't appear to be really about anything.
I’ve been stuck for agessss, first on ep 7 and now ep 8, and since scrubbing through some of the later eps to fix the subs after finally finding it in semi-decent quality, as far as I can determine the thesis statements of the series are: a) slavery possibly bad b) Daegil loves Ennoyeon absolutely unconditionally and always will and this may or may not be admirable of him c) loyalty??? something about saving the crown prince’s last surviving kid
And that’s it. That’s everything. It has nothing more specific to say and has almost no commentary on those two vague things that it does say. It just wants to point them out. There’s a repeated thematic beat about human dignity and not judging by appearances, but with only one exception thus far, dehumanisation is always tied directly back to the literal institution of slavery. The larger point about classism and prejudice is not developed despite looming hugely over the proceedings. It feels... hollow? I have a disconnect from what’s happening.
The positives are the fight scenes (rightfully revered, they’re balletic and gorgeous and all the work put in by the actors is fully captured by the fluid cinematography- totally get why everyone remembers these visuals, they are insanely good) and the music. The music is fantastic. That main fight song evokes historic grandeur and scale but it also has tonnes of individual personality and is an absolute banger. The editing and score always work together in a way that creates great atmosphere, powerful juxtapositions, and many iconic images. Like, A+ work on sensory storytelling, it frequently looks and feels incredibly cool and/or epic.
But it’s not a well-written show, man. There’s no real meat under all that artful presentation. The story and characters are so paper thin that I really struggle to care about them, even when there’s occasional good dialogue.
It has great eye candy (in both the usual sense and in that it just looks good in general- the stylish action beats, the stunning vistas, the grand scope), but there's no emotional core, no anchor. I'm on episode 8 and I have no idea what the actual story being told is supposed to be. It's endless exposition involving characters I mostly see no reason to care about and one giant, aimless, interminable, slow-motion chase sequence. There's certainly a prevailing theme about the rich and powerful grinding down the poor and how this creates a cycle of violence, but there's no substantive narrative tying any of it together or providing a way in for the audience. It's more of an amorphous blob of miseryporn with cheap cliffhangers than it is a story with a committed, focussed point (even one as facile as 'slavery bad', because for all the suffering on display the actual slaves are relegated to subplots, the show does not centre 'unjust society' as the villain despite feinting in that direction).
Out of the three leads, only Dae-gil is even a bit engaging to me on a pure writing level. He has some hints of genuine complexity that cause a lot of tension in everything he does, which is interesting, but he's also very, very static and opaque. You don’t really know what he’s thinking or feeling a lot of the time or what his larger motives are. But at least you wonder about him. The other two are so insufferably, staggeringly, impossibly boring that I cannot even imagine wanting to know more. The fallen general is a featureless plank of wood who causes my attention to wander every time he’s on screen and the girl is essentially a sentient piece of luggage with whom everyone falls in love for no adequately explained reason. Then these, the two most boring people in the universe, team up to be even more boring together.
It also outright lies to me with almost every episode-ending cliffhanger, in a way that borders on comic. Where the closing cliffhanger scene will be played differently with different shots in the opening of the following episode (eg: the closing sequence will have shown a big reaction of obvious shocked realisation on someone’s face as they catch sight of the person/thing they’re seeking, but the opening sequence replays the moment without the character noticing anything). Misleading us is fine, fake-outs can be okay if you don't overdo it, but fuck you show, blatant lying is too far!
Apparently it takes 15 episodes for Dae-gil and the luggage to even meet again and I'm so tired at the very idea of what nonsense will go on between now and then. I’m told there’s also no real emotional payoff or honest conversation between them later anyway. I love his undying devotion as a characterisation choice, I find his complicated attitude towards her and how it contrasts (and doesn’t) to the flashbacks really compelling in theory, but what is the point? She is a total nonentity and there’s no actual content to their relationship- there’s just the idea of it. What is he fighting for? He was this pure-hearted, clear-eyed idealist who wanted to change the world for her, then he became cynical when she left him for dead, and now he just seems ambivalent about slavery and the status quo. Disgusted by it but complicit in it. What is his suffering for? What has he learned? What’s my takeaway from this? I mean, I need to watch the rest, obviously, but seeing bits from later episodes, I’m already frustrated.
These characters just go nowhere. It feels like nothing much changes with any of them.
Don’t get me wrong, I 10000% understand why Dae-gil is an iconic performance that’s indelible in the minds of audiences and will forever define a huge part of JH’s legacy as an actor. It deserved every accolade! But it’s because of his performance not the character on the page. No one else would have been that iconic in this role. The character on the page is every bit as anaemic, thin, and lacking personality as General Balsawood and the Living China Doll. The writing is just as one note, he’s just as much of a flat, stoic cipher as Tae Ha. The reason he feels like something more than that and is about ten million times more compelling to watch than the other two leads is the utterly towering charisma of an actor who is perfectly in his element playing this part, determined to fully inhabit the role with total abandon. There’s an absolute commitment to the character that infuses everything he does on screen with life and mystery.
Jang Hyuk is making this underwritten, one-note person engaging through sheer presence and his empathy as an actor; he has this unmatched ability to bring genuine humanity to archetypal badasses and it’s the exact same quality that makes him so mesmerising as Bang-won and Oh Hyun Jae and Doctor Lee. He can be scary and vulnerable, compassionate and callous, desperate and untouchable all at the same time. There’s so much tension in the way he plays these parts, like they’re at war with themselves, really making you believe their choices are an organic manifestation of troubled psyches, and that makes the characters feel incredibly real. He creates something endearing and intriguing out of rote tough guy bullshit by always allowing a child-like element into these macho personas, a melancholy note of broken idealism.
There is a primary lack of vanity in his approach to playing the ‘cool guy’ that elevates the whole enterprise and allows you to view a stylised character as if they were a real person. He presents no sense of self-consciousness or awareness of his own image in these performances, he makes you believe he just is and it’s all effortless and that puts him in the ranks of the all-time great Byronic heroes. He is aspirational but relatable, charming without trying to be, dark without becoming unsympathetic. Those things make him seem dynamic even when the writing isn’t. If Oh Ji Ho or another equally boring actor had played Dae-gil, he’d be just as boring as Tae Ha.
For example: All three lead characters have a deliberately huge contrast between who they used to be in their past circumstances and what they are in the present of the show, but the only one who actually conveys this shift in identity with his mannerisms is Dae-gil. He comports himself so differently that you could, in fact, be completely forgiven for not recognising him as the same person; the way he speaks, the way he carries himself, the habitual set of his features, the look in his eyes, etc. has all changed. He is a radically different man than he was, obviously transformed from within by his traumatic experiences and also forced to alter his outward behaviour in order to survive.
The other two change outfits a couple times. Nothing else about them illustrates any kind of shake-up in their class status or self-understanding or emotional state. Ennoyeon’s sameness against Dae-gil’s sea-change makes her empty artificiality even more egregious. She should be just as unrecognisable as he is, her rise parallels his fall and is equally drastic.
Imo it’s 30% fortuitous casting of the exact right person and 70% JH doing all the work that makes Dae-gil an iconic character.
And I figure he alone might deserve most of the credit for creating this performance* considering how terrible Lee Da Hae is as the luggage. I know she’s not a terrible actress, she was perfectly fine in Robber, so the fact that she’s this expressionless, lifeless, sucking void of Perfect Noblewoman stereotypes (especially frustrating because she’s supposed to have been raised a slave and it makes no sense she’s this delicate, sheltered wilting flower) is something I’m going to blame on the director. I haven’t seen Oh Ji Ho in anything else, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he could do better than this, too. His woodenness might have been intended as the character being closed off, but in order for that to work you have to show there’s something going on under the surface and there isn’t. He’s got zero presence in this part, he’s overshadowed even by the one-scene day players.
So the director clearly wasn’t helping anyone much with their acting, is what I’m saying. Dae-gil’s two bros were all right, though General Choi is also a bit wooden and the ‘funny’ one can be kinda try-hard. None of the relationships in the show were super convincing, but the three of them at least had good chemistry together and comprehensible motivations. The same cannot be said of General Balsawood and the luggage, who had the opposite of chemistry. The two of them together is like watching paint dry. If the paint and the wall also somehow didn’t seem to like each other despite being inanimate.
The music is really fucking great though. I strongly suspect a massive amount of this show’s huge cultural impact comes from the epic music along with dazzling fight choreography, superbly shot, and great overall style distracting you from how boring most of the characters are. Coolness is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Even with Dae-gil, part of the appeal is definitely that he’s so cool that it covers how opaque he is as a character despite the phenomenal depth of agony he expresses. That action scene in the first episode is incredibly memorable and I can see how if you watched this on TV spread out over weeks, you’d just focus on the spectacular parts and the big tableaux with their effective imagery while forgetting the dragging, meandering, undefined slog that is the rest of it.
Edit from 300 years later: I mean, going further, and having watched some more contemporary shows, I’d venture that the action scenes are almost revolutionary for this kind of tv. They’re on a level so far above what I’ve seen in other historical dramas from that decade, it might be fair to credit them with the show’s success. The way they’re shot is genuinely beautiful and allows you to follow the flow of the action and actually see what’s going on in a way that’s still rare now. It just makes it ten thousand times more impressive when you can appreciate the choreography playing out in full, and the lack of ridiculous sound effects or wire-work is a big plus. People do flips, but they’re real flips done for real, not gravity-defying hovering.
(I am fine with ridiculous ott magic-fighting existing, it’s just when it’s in shows that are otherwise super grounded in the real world and played totally straight that I’m like ‘wat’. If people can fly, you need to set a tone where that seems appropriate; if you haven’t, the fights should remain tonally consistent and be believable - they don’t have to be realistic, they do have to be believable.)
Like, I’m watching the white whale show now (Daemang, the Great Amibtion, which was a white whale because it seemed like I would never be able to find it) and while it’s totally exceeding my expectations and is in fact genuinely wonderful as a show, the action scenes are terrible. It’s the anti-Chuno: the characters are fantastic, the story is thematically focussed and deeply profound, and the action is almost unwatchable. The fights are shot so badly that you have no idea what you’re looking at, there’s no sense of continuous movement or screen geography, and the sound effects are absurdly silly. The actors look super uncomfortable and mostly unconvincing.
I don’t know who decided constant fast cutting was a good way to cover action, but it’s just not. Even if you have to hide stuntmen or that what the character is supposed to be doing is physically impossible, you still shouldn’t cut every nanosecond. There are better ways to do it. The truly egregious offence is cutting people who can do the thing in a such a way that it looks like they can’t. If the actors can fight fluidly and do their own stunts, my dude you need to let the audience see it. Not that I tried to watch Voice and got motion sickness or anything.
Anyway, my point here is that Chuno’s action scenes are basically the Citizen Kane of action scenes in historical dramas and that plus coolness plus bulletproof anti-hero archetype played by a human inferno of charisma plus tragic romance is probably enough reason for it to take off. I still don’t get its sterling reputation as a masterpiece or why people think it’s such a great story (knowing very loosely where it goes and how it ends, I currently stand by my ‘vague directionless miseryporn’ assessment), but I do admire those elements. It’s a subpar whole with some really, really successful parts. I find I’d like to read fanfic that fleshed out Ennoyeon and her relationship with Dae-gil, so I’m buying in at least that much.
*he even choreographed his own action scenes. Learning that he did this blew my mind. Like... how? How was that allowed? How did he know how to do that? How could he be so good? I understand he was a gymnast and studied martial arts very seriously and went to university for theatre, but none of that really explains for me his ability to be a fight coordinator or do screen action at that level. He didn’t actually do a huge amount action before this! Maybe I’m overestimating how much experience/training you need to get handed that kind of responsibility even on a big budget production. Maybe I’m underestimating how much the director wanted him to play this part since JH said it was his request to design his own fights. An excellent call by the director in hindsight but must have seemed wildly risky at the time.
I think I read this show was over budget before it even started shooting, so maybe recklessness was a theme with the director. Paid off for them, though, didn’t it.

I have basically said everything I could say already about CC and her rep. But I just wanted to say that every day I mourn the fact that Kit and Ty weren't made girls. And not just for the wlw ship, although it would have been amazing to see a wlw relationship with the intensity and complexity of kitty.
But it just would have been cool to have a series (twp) with a main female character with an incredibly powerful lineage and a complicated backstory. So often men are given the angsty traumatic backstories (see Jace) as justification for the way they are. It would have been cool to have a female character like that with rough edges and hidden depths.
Also having a female autistic main character in a popular YA bookseries would be revolutionary. Also the intersection of misogyny and ableism is so fascinating (although painful) and if you made her a woc you could also talk about those intersections. Also creating a female character with Ty's level of fuck around and find out would be so iconic.
We were robbed 😔
It's absolutely amazing to me that we're circling back to wlw kitty, since that literally how we both met LMAO
Yeah, we really were robbed. When CC made Kit, he was a blank slate - she could've made him anything. And yet she chose one of the most obvious options and gave away a lot of diversity she could've included, while the other diverse side-characters such as Diana and Lily were left with almost nothing.
And, don't get me wrong, I love Kit, and I know you really do, too. But, yeah, a lot of chances were lost.
I'm glad that we have Mari now, though - canon or not. She's literally all we've ever wanted lmao (although I'm not sure if they're as edgy as ty and kit. tbh their angst levels are hard to compete with ajsdhaj)

A friend asked me to give a stab at a Tierlist Maker for Video Games Not Yet In the Video Game Hall of Fame Tier List Maker, so here's my list for it!
This is based primarily on what I considered to be overall value to gaming history as a whole, with games with greater influence or impact ranking higher than those that had less impact on those to follow, or on culture. All the entries are those that have been nominated to the Hall of Fame, but not actually inducted as of this post's writing. Games that I personally like are generally rated higher, though mostly because I'm more familiar with them and thus can judge their impact from a personal POV.
(Tier List explainations, below!)
SHOULD BE IN ALREADY
Final Fantasy: I mean seriously. How is this one not already in yet?? It is not, as my research suggests, the first true RPG; that likely goes to games like Ultima. It is certainly an incredibly influential one; FF is a name closely associated with JRPGs in general, and its diverse class system is one of the strongest things to do with it, as noted by challenges like beating the game with a party of Black Belts. FF is THE name of RPGs in general and I'm startled it hasn't made it in, though I suppose that's owing to more notable entries (Hard as that is to imagine). It doesn't hurt that the majority of my favorite FF titles are those most similar to this one, such as FF6 and FF9, in terms of approaching the general world setting and class systems. Most significantly is that this game popularized RPGs and made them accessible, in ways that previous games such as Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest did not; the field of gaming would be VERY different without it; RPGs became VERY popular, to the extent of RPG elements being almost universal among other games in the modern day. (I am also pleased and amused to see 8-Bit Theater mentioned on the actual Wikipedia page. Now THAT'S notability!)
Sid Meir's Civilization: HEY NOW HALL OF FAME JUDGES, DON'T YOU BE MOCKING CIV, ALRIGHT. CIV IS FUCKING AWESOME. Okay, jokes aside, I'm genuinely astonished as the Civ series is considered the first true main game of the 4x series, and it shows; the entire genre centers around expansion, resource usage and diplomacying or conquering your enemies, and considering the impact of this game and its sheer popularity, to the extent of the meme of the game getting people to play for Just One More Turn, I'm a bit disappointed that it's not already in the hall of fame. I also note that I am personally more familiar with the spin off Alpha Centauri, a sci fi variant, which is still one of my all time favorite games.
Half-Life: Given this game's popularity, to the point of its release alone consigning the likes of Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines to cult classic status and its engine spawning a whole THING with GMod and the usage of physics mechanics in FPS games, one thing of note is its use of scripted sequences; at the time, an unknown in most games of the time. There may be something to be said for how the entire game is spent as Gordon Freeman, behind his eyes, possibly engendering a lack of separation between self and character that would be later emphasized in games like Bioshock. It's influence on games cannot be denied, with publications using it as a bookend between eras of gaming. One consistent element of what seems to make this game so distinctive is its approach to storytelling, without simply imitating film techniques which don't always work well with gameplay.
Candy Crush: This is an example of something I don't personally play myself, or even like very much, but I'd be remiss to dismiss it out of hand. There's no denial that phone games are one of, if not THE biggest market of games in the here in now; if now in scale, certainly in quantity. You might call it the TF2 Hat Economy theory; people aren't spending BIG bucks, but they are spending a LOT of little bucks all the time. It proves that highly accessible games that are generally free to play, with optional purchases, are a legitimate means of game business, and this certainly revolutionized how games were seen by the money-makers.
Super Smash Bros Melee: I loved this game as a kid, but truth be told i have a bit of a love-hate relationship; i REALLY dislike the competitive community that has fixated hard on this game, so any thoughts on it will have a slight element of pause beforehand. Even so, I can't forget the thrilled delight I felt watching the trailer for this game in supermarkets for the first time as a kid. at a time when getting any new games at all was a HUGE deal in my family. So, there is a lot of feeling behind this one! Ultimately, I have to concede that while i have complicated feelings about this game, its worth noting that the vast majority of things that made Smash iconic, and influenced the competitive scene AND the games inspired by Smash AND shaped the course of the series going forwards, largely owe themselves to Melee in particular. 64 was far more slow paced, while Melee began the trend towards much more fast paced action (and while I doubt it's SPECIFIC to melee as a whole, it may have been a trend for the genre from then). Melee is STILL widely played, especially on the competitive scene, and this sort of longevity always bears evidence of notability.
Goldeneye 007: I have to admit that despite being a kid in the 90s, despite someone who put most of their time into gaming, and despite being someone whose favorite system at the time was the Nintendo 64, I mostly missed out on the trend of history by honestly not being that much into this game. I have to say that I DID play it, however; I just never managed to get past the first level or so. I have strong memories of triyng and failing to sneak around a snowy lair of some description; it wouldn't be until the mid-2000s, playing Deus Ex Human Revolution, that I got the hang of stealth. All the same, personal indifference really doesn't matter much because HOLY SHIT THIS GAME HAS SOME STAYING POWER. IT HAS INFLUENCE, FRIENDORITOS. Perhaps chiefly, at the time it was made, consoles were not considered viable platforms for first person shooters; Goldeneye revised that notion, and created a whole revolution in multiplayer and shooter games. We would later see the ultimate consequence of this in games like Halo, which further revolutionized the whole genre. Ironically, the stealth attributes I was so bad at were part of what made the game so unique! It's one of those games that may not have aged well, by modern standards, but its import to gaming as a whole goes a long, long way.
Guitar Hero: I expect this one might be a bit hard to justify, but on its own, this game is INCREDIBLY innovative, though its not entirely the first of its kind, having mechanics based on earlier games. The very first entry has a respectable library of 30 songs, which is impressive considered at the time it was made, its not likely people expected it to get as far as it did; bear in mind that the massive libraries of later games were the result of years of this game series being a massive steamroller of a franchise! At the time, this one was an unknown. It has an interesting history as being a successor of sorts to an arcade exclusive, and inspiring a genre of imitators and spiritual successors on its own; of great note is the sheer impact this game had. With so many of those successors, the increased value of liscened soundtracks, and the way the game's concept became so influential, its astounding this one isn't already on the hall of fame. (It's also very fun, but fun alone doesn't make for memorability, sad to say.)
DESERVES IT AT SOME POINT
Myst - an iconic and incredibly atmospheric puzzle game, I'm genuinely surprised that I haven't heard talk about this one in some respect; it bears note as a rare game with absolutely no conflict whatsoever. I actually rank this one on par with the 7th Guest in terms of atmospheric games, though their tones could not be more different. So why do I think this game deserves it at some point? It was an incredibly immersive and beautiful game, lacking in genuine danger or threat, encouraging the player to explore and tackle the puzzles of the game. This sort of open-ended lack of peril makes it an interesting precursor towards certain flavors of sandbox games around now. It's worth noting that it was a tremendous achievement, given technical limitations of things such as the CD-Rom it was stored on, maintaining a consistent experience, as well as tying narrative reasons into those very constraints. It has been compared to an art film; if so, it certainly is the sort that invited imitators and proved to be a great technical achievement.
Portal: PORTAL! What can I honestly say that hasn't already been said by other people? The amazing integration of a physics engine into innovative puzzle solving, combined with a slow burn sort of minimalist plot reveal concerning the AI proving itself to be a kind of reverse HAL 9000? This game got a HUGE number of memes back in the day, and I expect anyone reading this can probably reference a few. The cake thing, certainly, and its relevance to matters of deception. There is much discussion over the game's utility in academic circles, which is certainly quite notable, and for my part, I'm interested by the point that at first the game gives you a lot of hints towards what you're supposed to do, gradually making it less obvious for the player you're on your own entirely, using your experience with the game to get past the puzzles from there, and its excellent game design. Ultimately though, I place this below Half Life in hall of fame urgency, because while I probably like this one more, it doesn't have the same impact on other games, per say. (That's a lot of awards for it, though. Wowza.)
Resident Evil: Is it fair to call this one the major survival horror game of its era? No, because it's apparently the FIRST, or at least the first to be called such. It's certainly up there with shaping the genre as a whole, both its immediate predecessors and modern games. The flavor of a survival horror can even be judged about whether its close to Resident Evil's style of defending yourself with limited resources vs controlled helplessness. It's also worth pointing out that I quite like the restricted, cramped setting of the mansion, rather than an expansive city; Biohazard was a real return to form, even if its something I mostly watched through funny lets plays because OH NO ITS TOO SCARY I CANT WATCH.
Asteroids: It's called the first major hit of the golden age of the arcade. I'm forced to say... yeah, it absolutely deserves it. The actual implementation and hardware of the game makes for interesting reading, and so its innovative nature ought to be noted: it lacked a soundchip at all, making use of handmade circuits wired to the board. It's reception was great, beating out Space Invaders and needing larger boxes just to hold all the money people spent on it. It also invented the notion of tracking initials on the top ten score, which has implications for arcade challenges.
Ms. Pac Man: This one consistently ranks HIGH in gaming records of its time, though there is admittedly some confusion to whether it or Donkey Kong was a better seller. Interestingly it appears to shape most of the gameplay mechanics people remember most for Pac-Man, such as the improved AI of the ghosts. It's more highly regarded than the original game, and on a personal note, I remember being a kid and seeing this arcade machine at ALL the laundry places my family usually wound up going to.
Frogger: It's placing on this list is not solely because CUTE FROG. The accessibility and wide appeal of the game bears a great deal of consideration, the flexibility of its formula, and just how many dang times it's been ported in one form or another. (And also, cute frog.) It also gets points for the creator being inspired for the game when he saw a frog trying to cross a road, hampered by the vehicles in the way, and he got out of his car and carried the frog across the street. The game is also evident of broad appeal, and some money-makers resisting it, goes back a long way; it was apparently dismissed as a kid's game by some, which just goes to show that some problems are older than quite a lot of gamers alive today.
Uncharted 2: this is one of those games where I cannot honestly say I have personal experience to draw from. Of the playstation's big games, I remember the Jak and Daxter series; I remember Kingdom Hearts, and I remember Ratchet and Clank, and I remember Infamous, but the Uncharted series remains
something of a 'I don't go here?' obscurity in my personal playbook. It does look memorable and charming from what I've seen, and one consistent element I've seen in comments about it is the cinematic nature of the game; it feels very much like a fun heist movie, based on what I have seen of it, and the notable thing is how the game FEELS cinematic.. in a literal way. As in, it combined elements of cinematography with game design, and that's no mean feat: what works for movies are unlikely to translate well to the interactive side, and it shows how that can be done for other games. The extensive praise does the game a LOT of credit!
WORTH NOMINATION AT LEAST
Angry Birds: As noted before, I'm not the biggest fan of most phone games, given that i prefer a more passive experience than most provide. As such, Angry Birds isn't something I've played as of this writing, but I have to appreciate the straightforward and simple gameplay; it reminds me a bit of the Burrito Bison game series, which I HAVE played, and I'm going to go out on a limb and assume it's because Angry Birds is probably the innovation that coined that particular style of gameplay. It's an example of what made phone games profitable and worth the time of developers to work at them; its easy for casual players to get into, and there's a fun sort of impact involved. Given the popularity of phone games, this one has a LOT of influence in getting that rolling, similar to candy crush, if not as much.
FIFA International Soccer: Simulation games are a tricky business; it can be really difficult to get them right, and this game provides an example of it being done in a way that a lot of people REALLY loved, set up an entire game series, and revived the 3DO system after a very bad year. Of note, apparently it was commented that it was more of a simulator than a console game, and this is rather funny considering how simulator is its own genre nowadays! Such do things change. It seems to have been a revolutionary game and simulation; setting the shape for modern sport games of its type, and tending more towards realism (accounting for acceptable breaks in reality) than was typical of the time. This one's position is thus picked for its impact as a whole; while it may not necessarily be a household name now, the series continues on, and is popular enough that even after 20 years, it's still been going.
Elite: I nominate this game in this position for being a startlingly early entry into what we would now consider open-ended games, even with an element of exploration and trading; if one stretches definitions a bit, a precursor towards gameplay of the like scene in 4X players who strive to avoid conflict, if possible. Its technical breakthroughs are some very interesting reading and make for good game history; a vast and complex game (not just by the standards of the era, either), and opening the door for persistent world games such as World of Warcraft.
Wii Sports: A significant game, and much as how other titles mentioned above were famed for gateway entries into gaming for an unfamiliar audience, or those that would want o play on a more casual basis. It seems notable to me for being most suited as a family game, or a more casual experience of multiplayer than usually associated with games like this; this has greatly influenced Nintendo's design philosophy, and one can see elements of this all the way through the Wii U onwards. It's essentially a fliparound from Mario Party; less competitiveness, but definitely meant as a group thing. Controversy is evident, because like with Mario Party, injuries did result from it.
Call of Duty: I place this one here because, while it DOES hold a very significant role in gaming history, with countless imitators, spiritual successors, being a game-changer in ways that its modern reputation might surprise you with, ultimately it is less so than other games such as Goldeneye, Halo or Half-Life. It's development in AI pathfinding and tactics is incredibly noteworthy from a mechanical perpsective, and the sheer level of awards it won is notable. In the end this game's popularity and continuing influence means that it shouldn't be overlooked.
Metroid: You can't spell 'Metroidvania' without this game! A relatively open ended exploration-based game with further options opening as new tools were found give it an interesting vibe, and the oppressive atmosphere distinctive to the game says great things about its sound and level designs. It wasn't the first open world game, or explorer, or even the first to open new aereas based on equipment, but it had ALL of these elements in a very memorable package. (Samus Aran as a female protagonist is something I'm a bit reluctant to give it credit for, as her identity was obfuscated for most of the game, and only revealed in a fanservicey way in a secret ending. All the same, credit where it is due, I suppose!) It's music seems to endure as a mood setter, too!
Pole Position: Perhaps not the FIRST racing game, but still considered one of the most important from the golden age of gaming, and the one to codify many of the firm rules of the game series. It's three dimensional gameplay is incredibly innovative for its time, and having played it and games like it in the past, I'm struck by how smooth the whole thing feels. No wonder it was popular! It is notable for having been designed specifically as a 3d Experience, meant to execute techniques like real drivers might attempt, which makes it a different sort of beast in that it tried to do more realistic actions; in some ways, a precursor to modern trends of realism in many games, for ill or best. Ultimately I think this one is worth a nomination because of its influence towards racing games (a popular and long lived genre, to say the least) as a whole.
OUTSIDE CHANCE
Nurburgring 1: On the one hand, I feel a bit guilty putting this one so low; it is recognized as likely being the earliest racing game in history, and given that I just finished noting Pole Position's influence, it feels a bit mean to rate this one as relatively insignificant all the same. However, in terms of notability, I never even heard of this one, and it was tricky finding information about it. Accordingly, that may say something about its influence, though this position DOES make it noteworthy as the first of its kind, albeit with Pole Position refining and introducing elements that shaped the genre.
Dance Dance Revolution: It feels a bit strange, putting this one fairly low. This thing was a MONSTER back in the day; entire arcades were built around the dancing control peripherals it required, rhythm based games or mechanics specifically invoked it by name, and it was an absolute cultural touchstone for years and years. So, why place it low? Partly, its because I can't just shove EVERYTHING into the 'deserves a nomination' folder; I do think it's fairly reasonable for this one to at some point get a nomination in the future, though ultimately there's games more noteworthy on the whole. It's specific rhythm qualities continue outside of its genre, and are quite influential to gaming as a whole, though unfortunately the series seems to have lost something in notability over time; popularity is a factor, but so is the impact on other games.
NBA 2K and NBA Jam: I put these two together because they touch on similar touchstones for me, and they really did popularize basketball games back in the day. Jam in particular seems to be invoking the Big Head mode that were a big thing in games at the time, at least going from the screenshot. They were very popular and highly beloved games back in the day, though I don't know if they have much influence on later games. I note that interestingly, they take opposite approaches; 2k focuses on AI and realistic experiences, while Jam was deliberately less realistic and more actiony in its over the top gameplay.
Nokia Snake: This one really impresses me for the sheer number of releases, in various forms, it's had! Interestingly, there seems to be little consensus on the name of this game; most just call it Snake or something on that theme. I went with Nokia Snake because... mostly, it sounds funny, and that's how its done on the list. This one is fairly low, but I Have to give it credit for having hundreds of releases!
Farmville: My mom liked Facebook games, a lot. And I am certain this one was one of her main ones! I rate it fairly low, and no doubt her spirit is yelling imprecations at me across the void of time, space, and abandoned socks; all the same, this one is ranked low because of the sheer number of displeasure aimed this one's way. (And to be fair, she complained about it. A LOT.) It is thus notable for unusually negative reasons; an example of exploitation, pressuring players to pester their friends to play it in an equivalent to electronic chain mail, and microtranscations.
Tron: I'm inclined to give any game that takes place in a computer land and uses programming or mechanical terminology a free pass! Interestingly, this has some association with the Snake game, as they have similar gameplay and Snake games are sometimes called Light Cylce games, after this one. It has an interesting history; the graphical system was chosen largely because it was believed it was more likely to be achieved before the deadline.
NO BUSINESS IN THE HALL OF FAME
Mattel Football: I do feel a little mean putting anything in this category; firstly because I don't want to make actual fans of something sad, and secondly because I believe you can probably find notability anywhere you look, if you are inclined. And here is the chief difficulty with this one: I could not find any real information in this one. It has no Wikipedia page, a google search only led to undescriptive links of SALES for the game, but not any information on the game itself. Notability is my main resource for sorting these entries, and honestly? If google has nothing on you, that's a pretty poor sign. Sorry, Mattel Football, but you look like a poor man's Game And Watch. You're no Portal, Myst or Pole Position.

Dates
~~~~~
Tumblr media
🧡– Ochaco Uraraka
Night hiking wasn’t your first choice for a date, but when Ochaco weaponized her adorable face, you couldn’t say no. She excitedly led you by the hand along a trail she’d clearly walked many times before. At the end lay an opening in the trees with a breathtaking view of the starry sky. As you awed at the scene, the trees began to fall away. Actually, it was your feet that had left the ground. Ochaco, with her gaze fixed on the stars, was absorbed in the view—right up until she realized what she had done. Moving past her frantic apologies, you held onto her, sharing the weightless peace she had moments ago. Even after her motion sickness forced you back to the ground, you continued to share a quiet moment together beneath the stars.
Tumblr media
💛 – Izuku Midoriya
The plan was to go to a fun little board game café per Midnight’s instructions. Of course, you were having fun, destroying poor Izuku one game at a time, never giving him a second chance at any of them—you knew better. He took it all in stride though, as eager to try the next as you were. Then the surprise came when you realized the place had suddenly filled with people and the owner announced the beginning of trivia night. The topic? Heroes. Needless to say, your date trounced everyone in the room, including you, and he looked damn adorable doing it. Yes, he’s a bit fanatical about his heroes and his eyes lit up when he was awarded the All Might plush, but he has to be a good date after all. So to you go the prizes: the plush and the boy.
Tumblr media
💚 – Kyoka Jiro
Honestly, you weren’t entirely sure if the date was going well or not. You didn’t know if she was nervous or hating life, but Kyoka had been standoffish through the entire movie and even after when you went out for ice cream. Finally, on the walk home, you saw her eyes spark with excitement. A music shop had caught her attention and she awkwardly asked if you could take a look. Apparently, this prickly introvert just needed some tunes to open up. You spent hours in the shop sharing music and talking about everything. Hell, you managed to get the ambiance music turned up and convince her to dance with you until the owner kicked you out an hour after closing. And in the end, your date bashfully agreed to show you her own music on your next date.
Tumblr media
💙 – Momo Yaoyorozu
This girl doesn’t realize how intimidating her status really is. What do you get a girl that has (and can make) anything? Surprisingly, it was at a thrift shop. On the way to your real date, you passed by a second-hand shop and her intrigue was palpable. You indulged in her curiosity, suggesting to go inside. The sheer variety of donated clothing was impressive and, before long, you found something worth trying on. That action sets off something in Momo that leads to trying on everything in the store. Every outfit from comfortable to elegent and cool to straight-up clownish gets tried on like you’re celebrities. It’s a blast, giggling and strutting about (and putting it all back). In the end, you bought an oversized panda shirt she had her eyes on; she wears it every night.
Tumblr media
💜 – Shoto Todoroki
The date started a little late but the walk through the park as the sun set was perfect. You couldn’t help getting a closer look at the pond reflecting the stunning painted sky. Too bad you also didn’t notice the hole that tripped you. However, instead of ending up sopping wet in the pond, you fell on solid ice. Your hero tried to check on you, but his civilian shoes weren’t fit to prevent his fall. Laughing, you managed to stand and slide on over to your flustered date to help him up. That embarrassment slowly melted as you pulled him across the ice. But before you could step off the pond, he took the lead. It’s not surprising that he could so easily navigate the frozen pond, but his warm hands in yours and that soft smile could easily melt any heart.
Tumblr media
🤍 – Katsuki Bakugo
This is definitely a peculiar date. Due to Katsuki getting into trouble and then forgetting to cancel your plans, you both ended up at the local kennel to fulfill his punishment of volunteering. It wasn’t the worst way to spend the day: plenty of furry friends and your date made good company—plus most of the animals didn’t mind a quick cuddle or two. Getting to know Katsuki as the work went made it all go by in a flash, but it absolutely made your day when you noticed the future hero watching you snuggle a kitten with an unusually soft smile. Of course he scowled when he realized you caught him, and maybe even blushed, but it still had your heart fluttering. And even though you said you enjoyed the unusual date, he still promised to take you out on a real date next time.
ok so !! rn i’m thinking based on the results (you can still vote im just.. sharing what i think rn and kinda what you guys might expect in case u wanna change ur minds):
zuko will be added as the top voter in the first section but . probably won’t do him as much as the other characters cause i’m bad at character arcs :’) well. ones i dont create myself (ex: aria sacturi luca tokoyami the list goes on) tbh i’ll let u guys kno now i have a soft spot for zukaang but i dont tolerate gay fetishing i just genuinely think they’d work well
i rly need to rewatch SMDGFKD but im probably not going to it’s ok tho .. i can hear like. their voices in specific quotes so i think i’ll be ok .. maybe watch the beach episode that was wild
suki as second to top .. Good. Good. im glad my mini tag ted talk bumped her up.. she’s bi and what an icon. actuallly. i might make .. xe/xyr for suki. yea ok
ty lee .. the lesbian .. good. ok. also ik i said this before but she’s trans. and so im not . gonna ship her w any guys and im def not going to accept any transphobia thanks !  i mean not that i wld anyway but yk
sokka i might add as like .. again a side muse like zuko but .. since figs is picking him up i might not? debating whether to make him bigender sDGDS so .. i might make him but if i do he’ll be a side muse
i really need to update my mobile rules list
yue i might add just cause i’m so soft for my moon lesbian. also cause like ive said before .....  i had the Biggest crush on her for . literal years
jet’s an asshole we all kno but if he gets bumped up i might .. make some threads abt his past and kinda .. before he meets his Squad tm and .. yea jet does some Direct Fucking Action and it goes too far but .. i do like how he must’ve been before he got that power rush / etc. also .. im not gonna do anything related to ba sing se w him cause that freaked me tf out and i.. kinda dont wanna rewatch that
OK LOK NOW
asami: good . bicon. i rmmr i had her on my muses list before but took her off cause no one seemed interested but :”) at least ppl like her now SDFKJ and korrasami is .. probably the only ship id do with her .. her thing w mako .. idk i just wasnt a fan of how they portrayed her in it like the sterotypical jealous gf .. tho maybe that was during her bi awakening tm... also icb im writing both sides of this ship .. who needs rp ill just write w myself SDFK
prince wu: ok that’s some . that’s som egood shit. idk how well i’ll do him since we have’nt seen him much but .. he’s . he’s good also i only ship him w mako atm thanks cause i feel like they’d. balance each other out well and can rly learn from each other and also just. wld get along
FUCK I FORGOT TO ADD KUVIRA TO THE LIST IM DOING IT NOW ... ok so with her like.. i’d probably not do much related to her rise to power cause that was all sorts of weird . but def post-canon completely!
mako: i have mixed feelings abt him but i feel like i cld make him. actually likeable instead of how he appeared in the series and more of a. brother guy and u kno. respectful of people’s feelings but also not making him too . canon div like .. again ‘id probably postly write post-canon or pre-canon or .. aus DSGKDS .. like he’s still a bit of an asshole / control freak and i rly dont think mako n korra or asami bc of their love of freedom would’ve worked out regardless .. so while im not like making him canon divergent i will .. mostly write him out post- and pre- mako arc
bolin .. son .. sun .. you deserve the world.  i love you. thank you. also he’s trans bi . ok . thank you for my life that’s all i have to say. you all know how muc h i love hinm. actualyl i do have more to say he’s such an underappreciated character and .. he was so respectful to korra and did’nt take it out on her even tho his heart was broken (see: mako) and his lavabending he was so excited and im just .. soft
tahno ...... asshole. rat. im probably only gonna write him . Again. post-arc (amon) cauase .. that’s the part of him th’ats most interesting to me? and i can’t really.. connect with him pre-amon cause .. while i can vaguely understand him based on the info they give to us as creators i don’t feel .. comfortable writing him out ?
kya: ok tha’ts fair she’s kinda old. just saying she’s a lesbian and i love her so fucking much and she’s a wonderful mentor and strong and i really wld love to flesh her out
(also what about that cousin huan with theggreen streak art boy like .. just a sec imma add him just in case he’s tokoyami but . Not quite as sensitive and just .. SMGDKJ mostly for jokes but he was a rly fun chara)
