i saw some discussion of the Valar the other day and i wanted to bring this to people's attention. i found this fascinating and almost a little shocking when i first read it and i need people to lose their minds over it with me.

i love it because it perfectly matches the way i see the valar, as loving figures who fail to understand the children of iluvatar, leading to great tragedy. however, until reading this, it never even occurred to me that this interpretation was even close to the way tolkien saw them at any point in his life.

The Nature of Middle-earth - The Errors of the Valar

We have a specific statement by Tolkien that the elves were not supposed to be brought to Valinor; and, moreover, that the Valar themselves ought not to have stayed there during the long Ages of the Trees (Ages of Darkness and Ages of the Stars in Middle-earth), but instead returned to Middle-earth to defend it from Melkor. [Bold mine]:

…It was also held by some that the Valar had even earlier failed in their “trials” when wearying of their destructive war with Melkor they removed into the West, which was first intended to be a fortress whence they might issue to renew the War, but became a Paradise of peace, while Middle-earth was corrupted and darkened by Melkor, long unopposed. The obduracy of Men and the great evils and injuries which they inflicted upon themselves, and also, as their power increased, upon other creatures and even upon the world itself, was thus in part attributable to the Valar - not to their willful revolt or pride, but to mistakes which were not designed to opposed the will of Eru, though they revealed a failure in understanding of His purposes and in confidence in Him.

This is very mich in line with the ideas that I outlined in my Fëanor post - that the Elves were not meant to be in Aman, and that Fëanor’s goal of returning to Middle-earth could have been a valuable corrective if he had thought and behaved less selfishly - and makes me even more convinced of that perspective.

The point about how it would have benefitted Men if more of the Elves had remained in Middle-earth and been able to assist them is also interesting, and strengthens my view that Finrod is closest of all of the Elves to fulfilling Eru’s original purpose for Elves and Men - befriending and teaching and learning from each other. And the line about the departure of many of the Elves to Valinor being disastrous because of “exposing Men more dangerously to the power and deceits of Melkor” may contain the intriguing implication that if the Elves hadn’t in large part left Middle-earth, the Fall might not have happened.

I just have to say for a moment: I never realized how significant a change in environment could be. 

In my old town, I was constantly on edge terrified of the brash people around me. Compliments were few and far between, especially after I left college, so I cherished them on every rare appearance. I never left my house for fear of running into unsavory people on the street or even worse, getting shot. There was already an armed robbery outside my front door a few years back. My old town was branded completely and utterly unsafe. 

Now here I am, back to a place that I was so eager to leave and everything feels bright and clean and warm. I feel safe here. I feel like I can step outside and take a deep breath of fresh air and exist unendangered. I feel more motivated. I’ve been waking up earlier than usual. I’ve been feeling more motivated to make an effort with myself. Not by much, but a little makeup here, a little color coordination there. Wearing actual pants/shorts instead of leggings and pajamas. I’ve been leaving the house more often, going out and being social and just existing. The other day, a total of four people complimented my dress. Today, someone complimented my hair despite my inch-long encroaching roots and uneven bleach/dye job. People seem brighter here. Happier. Friendlier. The world seems a little bit safer, a little bit warmer, a little less claustrophobic and a little less tense. 

I don’t regret the growth and maturity and independence that my old town gave me, but I don’t regret leaving it now either. Not in the slightest. It’s been stressful and weird attempting to navigate living here again as the person I am now, someone new and changed and unfamiliar in this territory, and it’s been stressful trying to reorganize my life and figure out what the fuck I’m doing and what path I’m going down, and I still don’t really know, but it’s better. Everything here feels better, and I’m happy.

I would say no, it’s actually somewhat the reverse – according to Tolkien, Morgoth managed to snag so many humans into his service in part because the Valar’s not-that-well-advised attempt to protect the elves from Morgoth by offering to bring them to Valinor meant the elven population of Middle Earth and beyond was actually much sparser than intended (and a large proportion of them gathered into Beleriand and therefore isolated from humans for a long time) and completely devoid of Vanyar and Noldor.

Therefore the intended cooperation between elves and humans, and elves’ protection and conferring of knowledge and stuff to humans, in order to pass the torch, since humans were meant to replace elves over time, was severely disrupted, the help they got from elves before the Edain came to Beleriand was a lot less substantive than it would have been otherwise, since the Avari didn’t have civilizations as big and high-yield as Doriath or Mithrim or Ossiriand etc, or any of the Noldor realms the Edain eventually discovered. (Humans also got a lot of knowledge and language osmosis’d and taught to them by dwarves in the canon timeline though, iirc.)

I would say this makes perfect sense – I’ve discussed before (gotta click back through the replies for full context lol) the sort of mutually-strengthening potential of elves and humans – elves, being so thousands of years older, and immortal, able to directly confer to humans the sorts of crafts, arts, tech, etc that it took hundreds of thousands of years for humans to develop IRL; and humans, being mortal, and therefore their societies being inherently unlike elves’ due to generational overturn, able to put these things to use in a huge array of ways specific to mortal lives. I stole @gurguliare‘s excellent phrase ‘elves as a patch for human continuity.’ That’s also how Morgoth’s influence on them in the early days was sorta explained in The Tale of Adanel from Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth – humans were very impatient when it came to learning and getting more knowledge.
