The irony is that for his film, after depicting the desperate, intersecting lives of four people, Hu chose a different answer to the problem, something more in line with Samuel Beckett's familiar formulation, "You must go on, I can't go on, I'll go on." That's the choice made by the young Wei Bu (Peng Yuchang) and Huang Ling (Wang Uvin) on the advice of the elderly Wang Jin (Xi Zi), even though the last has already admitted that in his long life he has never found anything different from the existential misery in which they exist. "So I have to sugar-coat it," he says. "There must be a difference." So the three of them, along with Wang Jin's young granddaughter, continue their journey to see the titular elephant, a ponderous symbol of elective inertia, introduced into the film by the gangster Yu Cheng (Zhang Yu), telling his girlfriend about "an elephant in Manzhouli. It sits there all day long. Perhaps some people keep stabbing it with forks. Or maybe it just enjoys sitting there. I don't know." This is a four-hour film that's anything but epic. Hu makes no attempt to enliven it with sensational moments, though it contains violence: two suicides, several other deaths including that of Wang Jin's small dog, and several beatings. But all of them occur just off camera. In perhaps the central event, when Wei Bu shoves the bully tormenting his friend down a flight of stairs, we barely even see the shove, but only hear the muffled sound of the fall, and finally glimpse the bully on the flight below. The bully, who dies in hospital, is Yu Cheng's brother, which serves to link his story with that of Wei Bu, but it's not the only death Yu has witnessed today: Earlier, he has slept with the wife of a friend who, on discovering Yu Cheng in their apartment, jumps off the roof of the building. We don't see that fall either. Instead, the camera lingers throughout the film in extended takes, usually keeping one or more of the characters in close-up. Even when encounters between characters take place, there's none of the usual cross-cutting, and often they enter and even remain out of focus in the background. If this sounds like mannered filmmaking, I'm afraid it often is. And if the existentialist drift of the narrative sounds pretentious, I'm afraid that's also true. And yet, this is a film that can draw you in and hold you in its spell for an unconscionably long time, simply because it's so beautifully assembled, so deft at drawing you into its world, holding you to its characters and their plight.

The typical contract marriage trope where they eventually fally in love. “Well Intended Love” made me go down this path lol I stumbled upon this and overall I like this drama more for their acting.

You can already tell from the beginning that they have some feels for the other but are suppressing it for now. Love the way he was looking at her with the wedding dress on.

A lot of their issues actually was brought on by Ran Xiwei, the jealous friend who has the hots for Si Chen. She thinks that Gu Xixi does not deserve Si Chen.

After so many obstacles, they finally proposed to each other. This time for real.

Enjoying this new Chinese Drama called Rebirth for you, LOL kinda hate the waiting part though. It airs Sat and Sun 7AM american time so the wait for the eps kinda drags but they at least air 2 eps per day so its almost getting there. Joseph Zeng is bad ass when he does the fight scene even though its far fetched with the air flying and such he makes it look so goood and he is obviously dreamy on screen he has that soft and innocence that alot of asian men bring. A warrior who falls in love with a princess is a bit cliche but something about this drama kinda has that love and fight and those devious woman and men who want the attentions of Bao Ning and Li Qian.

Adoring how the romance grew for Princess Bao Ning who is smart witty and can definitely handle herself amongst Li Qians wicked stepmom and so-called sister who is such a B****. But on the other hand, Li Qian has to deal with the men who are pinning for his wife Mr so-called doomed Emperor who wanted Baoning to be his empress but lol his mom over ruled that choice and made his childhood girlfriend be his empress but the love between them is so smh she loves him but dude is so not for it, next man up is Qing An who i think is like the general or something he also has a thing for Baoning but she herself ain't feeling it. Li Qian is def the one for her, he saved her life more than once and even though he isnt of royal in any way he is the General of sorts to an army. Baoning and Li Qian chemistry is adorable seeing how they met under false pretenses you can tell they were starting to feel things, Cant wait to see where it leads hopefully they overcome the rivals that are annoying.

But if you are looking for a more modern chinese drama of sorts, Once we get married is a fun Rom com which is currently airing every Fri and Sat 2 eps her day, they are currently up to episode 18 out of 24 eps, So far its cute and whitty with Xi Xi and Si Chen who started off being contractually married til Si Chen really fell in love with Xi Xi who is just a normal girl trying to live her dream of having her own clothing brand but the contract they signed was so Si Chen can try to weale his way into getting a popular world renowned fashion designer Alex to partner with Why Mall. There agreed fake marriage would last 6moths or so but during that time Si Chen started to realize there was something there growing between them even for a hard ass business guy he starts to soften which is a new thing for him he was raised by a stricked mother who enforced such a hard shell on him where he thought love was not real.

But there is also them rivals who want to be with the leads, for Si CHen its his so called sister who is hell bent on hurting Xi Xi in any way that chick is just ruthless she tried to tear Si Chen and Xi Xi apart by trying to ruin Xi Xi business CiCi by twisting Xi Xi words in an interview making her sound bad that Si CHen went to Xi Wei to make her see that he has no feelings in any way for her and to leave his wife alone but she wont stop, she tries to cook and wease her way in but Si CHen aint having it he kept telling her off gurl be hell bent that she went a bit to far by releasing personal scanned notes/journal entries at a live event that Si Chen was holding to ruin Xi XI reputation but Si Chen still being the brave loving hubby defends her that Xi Wei gets more pissed that when she finds the marriage is an actual fake she publicly releases it making Xi XI a target of hate from everyone and also almost runing Si Chens company in the stock market. Si CHens rival for Xi XI heart is a famous manga artist/businessman Mo Zi Xin who is a nice guy and a childhood friend of Xi XI all he wants is to protect her and thinks he can do a better job than Si Chen but in all fairness Si Chen seems to be doing pretty good at being hubby to Xi XI

Its a enjoyable yet chessy rom com that comes with obsticales of rival lovers but i have to say its cute seeing how Si Chen grows to be soft and Xix shows him to let loose even though she has that innocence she sill shy and loveable. Uvin Wang and Wang Zi Qi on screen chem feels natural and fun to watch.

Non ero a conoscenza dell'esistenza di questa serie fino a un paio di settimane fa, quando mi ci sono imbattuta per puro caso gironzolando su internet. Come i miei occhi sono caduti sulla locandina, mezzo secondo mi è bastato per riconoscere Xiao Zhan, così ho iniziato subito a vederla pensando: "Perché non sapevo nulla di questa serie???"

Pensavo di conoscere ogni singolo drama girato da XZ, ma YouTube mi ha sorpresa.

Beh, ora che l'ho finito mi dico che potevo anche continuare a non saperne nulla, perché questa serie è di una banalità e stupidità quasi imbarazzanti, tuttavia nel suo essere stupido e banale, è divertente. Non nascondo di essermi fatta varie risate nel corso della visione, ma nella seconda metà ho notato un calo di attenzione.

Non saprei spiegarmi il perché di questo. Negli ultimi tempi ho lasciato che il mio cervello si adagiasse su drama alquanto leggeri e spensierati, e credo che la cosa mi abbia resa un po' pigra, quindi la visione parallela di Chief of staff mi ha totalmente risvegliata rimettendo in funzione il mio cervello, e così Super Star Academy ha un po' smesso di essere così divertente e ha cominciato a darmi noia.

Ho anche cominciato a prestare meno attenzione ai sottotitoli (in inglese), e se non capivo qualcosa... sticazzi. Perché la trama di questa serie è talmente semplice, e spesso le cose sono rese in modo così stupido, che sapevo già dove si stava andando a parare.

La Super Star Academy è frequentata da ragazzi e ragazze ognuno con un potere diverso in base al loro segno zodiacale. La protagonista, apparentemente senza alcun potere (e questo già dice tutto), riesce per qualche motivo a entrare nella scuola, entrando subito in contatto con il lead, il ragazzo più bello, figo, ricco, e desiderato della scuola. Questi dovrebbe anche essere l'erede della famiglia Fang, ma a un certo punto il second lead ci dice che è lui il vero Leone della famiglia, e prepara vendetta. A completare il tutto abbiamo i membri della tredicesima costellazione del pianeta (un branco di idioti), che vogliono vendicarsi delle altre costellazioni che hanno cercato di sopprimerli anni prima, e conquistare il mondo.

Che cosa si può tirare fuori da una trama del genere se non una storia banale?

Partendo dalla protagonista, tralasciando il fatto che non ricordo assolutamente come caspiterina abbia fatto a entrare in quella scuola se sprovvista di poteri, in generale non mi è piaciuta. Per chi ha visto You Are Beautiful, questa è una Go Mi-nam 2.0, solo che Go Mi Nam almeno mi faceva ridere e mi stava simpatica, questa invece manco quello. Non dico che mi è stata antipatica, ma l'ho trovata un po' insipida.

Inoltre non può certo vincere per intelligenza. Basti pensare che mentre è inseguita da un cattivo, si volta e gli allunga la mano per aiutarlo a salire una collina, al che io non ho saputo se ridere o mettermi le mani nei capelli. Capite quando dico che questa serie è stupida?

Se la si guarda con questa mentalità accettando il suo stile, allora ce la si può godere, ma non bisogna assolutamente avere pretese.

Diciamo che va bene quando si ha voglia di qualcosa di leggero da guardare la sera, o come intermezzo tra drama più pesanti.

XZ è una gioia per gli occhi come sempre, anche se l'ho trovato un pochino messo da parte nella seconda metà della serie. La sua recitazione è buona (non può non esserlo), vanta sempre una bellissima espressività, ma ammetto che nulla è paragonabile a Wei Wuxian di The Untamed, un ruolo per cui si vede che ha fatto un lavoro incredibile.

Quello che mi è piaciuto del suo personaggio è che nonostante il suo status sociale, non si è mai presentato come il classico ragazzo ricco e viziato, antipatico e arrogante (stile Daoming Si di Meteor Garden diciamo), ma si è anzi mostrato un ragazzo tranquillo, semplice e alla mano, rivelandosi anche una vittima nelle mani della madre ambiziosa.

La storia d'amore tra i due lead è la più banale e semplice che abbia mai visto. Ogni loro scena insieme è stata un cliché. E non sono davvero riuscita a digerire l'espediente del destino come spiegazione dell'amore di lui:

"Ti ho salvata dieci anni fa perché fin dalla prima volta che ti ho visto ho capito che era destino."

Certo, perché tu, bambino di otto anni, vedi una bambina in pericolo e la salvi perché hai capito che sarà la donna della tua vita.

XZ, io ti voglio bene, ma questo non lo accetto. Credo che questo sia stato il punto più basso toccato dalla serie.

Si salvano però le bromance della serie, sia quella tra il protagonista e il suo migliore amico nonché Capitan Shipper Shen Hao, legati come fratelli (hanno praticamente celebrato un matrimonio tra bambini... CIOÈ, IO ADORO), sia quella tra Shen Hao e il suo più acerrimo nemico Li Ya Dang. Partiti come avversari che non riescono a stare nella stessa stanza senza guardarsi male, i due nel corso della storia si ritrovano ad aiutarsi, diventando prima complici, poi amici amanti.

Se questo non è amore:

Per quanto riguarda i due second lead, devo promuovere entrambi, e non me l'aspettavo.

Il second lead l'ho trovato molto umano nella sua voglia di vendetta, tanto arrabbiato da sfogare il suo risentimento anche su chi colpevole non è. Non sono riuscita a innamorarmi della bromance con XZ perché è arrivata tardi, ma il second lead si aggiudica il premio di eroe della serie.

La second lead era partita come la più grande psicopatica che abbia mai visto in un drama, ma mi ha stupita nel suo percorso di dolorosa accettazione, e sopratutto tanti complimenti a lei per aver continuato ad amare XZ anche quando si è scoperto che non era il vero erede della sua famiglia.

Parlando dei villain, questi li devo bocciare. A parte la banalità delle loro motivazioni, questi tizi sono messi in scena in un modo talmente idiota che è impossibile prenderli sul serio.

Promuovo invece, per pura bontà, la madre di XZ, anche se è logicamente davvero poco probabile che alla fine accetti il rifiuto del figlio di diventare l'erede della famiglia, ma d'altronde da questa serie non mi aspettavo altro.

Infine non posso non citare la competizione della scuola che accompagna buona parte della serie. Una parola: ridicola.

Un gruppo di concorrenti viene scelto per affrontare una serie di prove, la protagonista prega che non venga fatto il suo nome ma ovviamente viene scelta... in puro stile Harry Potter e il calice di fuoco.

La serie ci regala anche la versione trash dei dissennatori:

E no comment anche sul finale della competizione, vinta dal protagonista perché i due second lead decidono di ritirarsi ti piace vincere facile.

Per non parlare dello scontro tra la protagonista e la second lead, che invece di fronteggiarsi in un classico combattimento si lanciano in una furiosa cat fight senza precedenti:

I have no deep thoughts about this, other than oooooooooooh, pretty!

I have enjoyed the first ep a lot. It’s much less cracky and gonzo than s1 and, much as I adore Jeremy Tsui, he is no Zhang Ruo Yun, who makes any scene work by the sheer magnetism of his presence, but it looks set to be a gorgeous gorgeous romantic fairytale.

Also, the leading lady can portray bratty without being annoying which is hella impressive.

That reminds me I never finished Legend of the Phoenix with Jeremy Tsui. I think once I finish The Untamed, it’s going to be my next cdrama binge.
