[Translation] Tsukiuta Character Song 3rd Season - Special Mini Drama “Joint Live’s Backstage Infiltration”

I’ve been thinking of translating this ever since I translated Hajime and Shun’s MC corner, but once seeing the length, I kept on postponing. This is a special CD offered after pre-ordering all 12 volumes (it’s quite old right now... 2015). If you have the CD, please listen to it while reading this, it makes it even funnier.

Kakeru: Well then, everyone. Gravi’s--

Iku: And Procella’s Joint Live--

Koi: Ended safely and with full power!

Rui: Good job.

Kakeru: Are your glasses prepared?

Iku: In that case… Cheers!

Everyone: Cheers!

Rui: It’s non-alcoholic.

Koi: Now that the live has ended safely, we’ll be reporting from the dressing room. Gravi will be doing a broadcast in real time as we celebrate our closing party!

You: Procella here! I’m Haduki You! Yey! Everyone, are you watching?

Arata: I wanna say something too. Yey, I’m Uduki Arata. Yeey.

Aoi: Arata…

Arara: Prince Aoi is here too.

Aoi: Eh? EH? Ah, aah.

Arata: Yeah, Aoi. Yeey.

Aoi: Eh? Ah? Uhh… yes, yey…

You: -laughs- Aoi-chan, you’re still not used to this~

Rui: He really isn’t.

Aoi: That’s because I don’t usually do it.

Yoru: Uhm, Haru-san… Somehow it feels very leisurely, but is it alright to keep up this atmosphere?

Haru: Eh? Ah, yes. It’s alright, it’s alright. I’m sure it would be more pleasing for the fans to see us acting normally like this.

Yoru: Is that so?

Kai: Eh? So that’s how it is?

Haru: It seems so.

Hajime: Haru. The video you’re recording right now will be used for the live DVD’s special footage, right?

Haru: Yes, that’s what I heard. Ah, Hajime. Drinking liquids is good for your body. Since you seem thirsty, are okay with sports drinks? -pours-

Hajime: Yeah, thank you.

Shun: Yes, yes, Haru. I also want to drink something.

Kai: Shun too? Give me your paper cup. How come both of you leaders are thirsty?

Shun: We were the last ones in order during the solo parts, weren’t we? Since we were unable to return backstage until the end of the live, we didn’t have enough time for refreshments.

Hajime: He’s right.

Yoru: Ah, Shun-san, Hajime-san. We have orange juice and bottled sodas, do you want any?

Shun: Oh, thank you. I’ll be taking some orange juice, Yoru.

Arata: Ah, Yoru. I wanna drink cola.

Koi: You didn’t listen at all, did you?!

Kakeru: Finally! There are piles of fries! What is this? There are also a lot of sauces! Anyway, I’ll conquer everything!! I’m hungry!

Iku: I know what you mean. When I realized the live was over I was suddenly hungry. Guess I’ll have something too.

You: Ah, Iku. Hand some plates over here, too. What about Rui?

Rui: I… rather than food, I want something to drink.

You: Tea? Or something sweet?

Rui: Hm… something sweet.

You: Thought so. Kooii! -smacks-

Koi: Me? Yes, with pleasure!

Hajime: Good grief. They’re making an uproar.

Kai: We have twelve guys in their growth period. It’s impossible to keep everything under control. Hehe. Looking at them made me hungry too~

Hajime: Ah. Is there something you’d like?

Kai: Oh, thank you. But it’s alright, I’ll go take something by myself. Uhm, Hajime? And Shun, Haru. Is there something you want to eat?

Shun: Yes~ Kai. I think I want to have a pile of fries as well.

Hajime: I’m fine with anything.

Haru: I just want to eat a lot.

Kai: Ha~ru. Your demands are simply the most difficult. You’re coming with me!

Haru: Haha. I guess so~ Roger.

Aoi: Uhm, sorry to disturb you while eating. Everyone, have you calmed down your stomachs already?

Arata: ‘Since the endless dining scene is going to continue, please start the round-table discussion any time now’ says the cheat sheet. It seems like it’s been there all this time.

You: Ah. Ah, seriously?

Yoru: Uwa, sorry!

Arata: Here are the idols who were so absorbed by eating that they forgot about the presence of the camera. Ding.

Aoi: Arata! ...Is what I’d like to say but, I completely forgot about it too so, I can’t really lecture you...

Haru: Okay! For now let’s go back to square one. Kakeru, Koi?

Kakeru: Yes, Haru-san! Well then everyone, good job for the joint live once again. Let’s start the round-table discussion! Koi!

Koi: Aye! To get right to the point, we were handed this signboard after the Junior Group was suddenly told to take charge of this segment. Flipping, done!

Rui: Here are today’s highlights: self-promotion tournament. That’s what it says.

Iku: Hm, hm, uhmm. ‘During today’s live each of you was shining. Please tell us what exactly you consider to be matching that description and is worth mentioning.’ is apparently what it says.

Arata: I see. Then it’s fine if I say what was cool about me? Something I’m confident that won’t be cut at the editing.

Aoi: As expected, I guess here we have to mention some scenes that would be saved for the DVD?

Rui: It must be a side of us that we want our fans to see too, something fully appealing, right?

Aoi: Indeed. What about yours, Rui?

Rui: Hmm… hmmmm…Hmmmmmmmmmmm…

All: -gloomy-

Kakeru: He’s thinking deeply. Well, is there someone who already knows what they’re going to say?

You: Yep!

Koi: Oh, You is the first in line! Please proceed then!

You: I’ll go for my backflips during the dance. I mean, I managed to do it successfully during the noon and night shows so it’d be great if they kept it during editing~. You, the one watching this footage, please check that part properly.

Yoru: What You wants to show off is so easy to tell. That must be nice~. Mine is… the long tone before the modulation in ‘Yumemiru Mikaduki’. That part stretches out a lot being the major uprush of the song, so I’m glad I didn’t break into a falsetto.

Rui: Yeah. You delivered it properly. It was very impressive.

Kai: Right? You did sing that ‘fa’ key.

You: That’s from golf, isn’t it?*

Yoru: -chuckles- Anyway, I’m glad I was able to sing it properly!

Koi: All right! The best one in Gravi was me, Koi-kun! I guess mine would be when I waved the flag during “Sore wa Kitto Koi”. Everyone in the venue waved their lights, and it made everything really exciting.

Iku: The part that got the crowd really wild was when you dropped the flag once during the hook of the song. -laughs-

Koi: Eh? You noticed that?!

Hajime: We certainly did.

Koi: Hajime-san…I just barely missed dropping it so please say that it was “safe”! Please say it!

Hajime: Yeah, yeah.

Kakeru: If that’s what Koi’s going with, mine is definitely how the strings from Aoi-san’s costume and mine tangled during our unit song. But I managed to untie them.

Aoi: That was really scary! It seems we got entangled while dancing beside each other.

Haru: Eh? Something like that happened?

Kakeru: It did! We got surprised. During the time we were passing by each other, we got pulled together.

Aoi: By the time I realized what was going on, Kakeru instantly detached his string from mine. You helped me out a lot. Thank you.

Kakeru: No, no. I just simply pulled away with all my might.

Koi: Kakeru-san, when you put it that way, it makes you more manly.

Haru: I didn’t know about that… I see. So something like that can happen with the decorations. We have to be careful.

You: It’s true that you handled the situation well, but are you sure the audience didn’t see?

Kakeru: I get it. Then let’s do a slow playback of the problem scene right here.

Iku: You’re gonna show it?!

Kakeru: I’m joking, I won’t do it.

Yoru: I really thought you were going to do it.

Kakeru: I think we’re going to find out whether we were successful or not during the edit cutting.

Kakeru: It felt like I became able to respond quickly during unexpected situations like the one that happened on the stage, so I’m especially making this my highlight this time.

Yoru: Yes, it’s very good.

Aoi: To continue, it might be because it was in English, but my highlight was the moment when everyone in the audience was excited during ‘Yes’. There were plenty of calls and responses during the song and everyone had fun. It felt so nice.

Rui: Aoi’s ‘Yes’ and my ‘Oh, yes!’. Every song that has ‘yes’ in the title seems to have calls. It probably happened by chance, but the coincidence is amazing, huh.

Aoi: Ah, yes. You’re right.

Koi: Yes?

Kai: Yes!

Rui: Yes?

Iku: Yes!

All 6: Yes!

-applauses-

Aoi: What kind of a play is this?

Iku: On the other hand I was wondering what exactly was exciting for me haha. I think hmm… I will go for the dance choreography of my duet with Rui, ‘Childish flower’. During the performance, there were really a lot of parts that looked cool but there were also parts we had difficulties in trying to keep in sync so we practiced it a lot. Since our improvements must be evident by now, please check that part.

Yoru: Ah, you two practiced that part several times. Don’t worry, today your timing was perfect.

Iku: Ah, is that so? I’m glad!

Rui: Mine is ‘Duty’. There’s a turning part that I was anxious about, but I managed to do it successfully. During rehearsals my legs kept on tangling, so I’m relieved I was able to turn around.

Arata: Hmm? When I watched from the wing it didn’t seem that dangerous, so you haven’t been found out, Rui.

Rui: You think so?

Aoi: Yes. Rui is strong during the actual performances, I’m envious.

Rui: E-hem. Then next. What about Kai?

Kai: Oh, me? My highlight, huh? Then I’ll go for the moment when I swung the mic stand during ‘Beast master’. I was cool, right? Don’t fall for me. -sparkles-

Haru: You don’t have to say it. But since it matches our topic, I guess it’s fine?

You: But, Kai. Didn’t you ‘magnificently’ make the mic stand fly during rehearsals?

Rui: He did. With a ‘boom’.

Kai: Ah, AH! That was an accident! Don’t expose me in front of the camera! That was a time before the stand was properly fixed in place!

Shun: It’s alright. You nailed it during the performance, Kai. It was cool~

Kai: Hehe, thank you for the support. Thank you!

Hajime: Swinging the stand, huh? I want to try that next time as well.

Shun: Oops! I’ve just heard some mutters I can’t ignore! Just imagining Hajime looking✧my*+:way:･ﾟwhile*:skillfully*✧and:｡.perfectly:+*raising,∞:｡.swinging,꒳ᵕ˙and dancing with a mic stand is…... IT’S SO COOL!!!!! When that will come true, I’ll be in the front row looking forward to watching that sight closely as I scREAM “HAJIME LOVE” FROM THE TOP OF MY LUNGS!!!

Everyone: -gloomy- …eh…?

Hajime: I have the feeling that stand will carelessly slip from my hands and land on a certain person from the first row looking almost as if I had planned to fling it towards him from the beginning.

Kakeru: I understand your feelings, but please calm down, Hajime-san.

Arata: All right, my highlight happened during the interchange of my new song ‘Kimi, maioriru’ when you can see me playing an air guitar with all my soul. You have to check that out, I was in high spirits.

Koi: You certainly were. But that wasn’t planned at all, right, Arata?

Arata: Hmm, it was more like something done on the spot, because of the flow and the atmosphere.

You: Here they are, his impromptu parts!

Aoi: Arata has many ad-libs and segments on the spur of the moment, so it’s difficult for those around him to keep up.

Iku: After seeing you perform that kind of air guitar solo, I want to learn from your confidence at stealing the girls’ hearts.

Aoi: Ah, as the event’s focus is singing, it’s quite difficult to bring up something else, isn’t it?

Haru: It is. I did try my best during the other parts too, but it’s a bit sad that the only thing I can think of only involves singing. Ah, that’s right! I worked on the opening of the event! I was in the planning department.

Kai: Ah, so that’s what you’re going to mention? We had a few projects for the event, but which one was your suggestion?

Haru: Well. The self-promotion was not mine since I also had to do my own. Mine is the ‘Quiz competition between the units’!

All: Ah!

Arata: Haru-san really doesn’t hold back when it’s about a quiz. Your expectations are so high that any standards become invalid.

Rui: Too high.

Hajime: Your facial expression when you got something right made me want to give up on the spot.

Rui: Hmmm… me too a little bit?

Haru: Please stop with that.

Iku: Haru-san covered every topic, from cultural questions to general knowledge, from current news to sub-culture.

Shun: I don’t think cultural questions should be a problem though.

Yoru: We lack in general knowledge, Shun-san.

You: Ah, don’t say that, Yoru!

Shun: He just did, You~...

Yoru: Eh? -lightbulb lights up- AH! No, no, no! I didn’t mean it that way! I didn’t express myself properly, sorry! I was only saying that Shun-san is not good at general knowledge questions.

Kai: The meaning is almost the same though. -wry laugh-

Hajime: The sub-cultural questions were the ones I couldn’t get.

Kakeru: Ah, Hajime-san finds questions like that troublesome, huh? You don’t normally watch variety shows, do you?

Hajime: I don’t.

You: He doesn’t even surf the internet much, too.

Hajime: I use it when I need to confirm something.

Arata: He’s completely unaware of a lot of slang, right?

Hajime: Slang…?

Koi: Okay, don’t make him think! When things like that are loading in his head’s dictionary, he gets more confused by modern language!

Haru: Though, I think it’d be best if we explained it in detail, right? But, I have a mysterious want of not telling him unnecessary things because I want him to continue being the way he is.

Kai: I see. I think that’s understandable.

Haru: Also, I think our king is the only one capable of making not only me but his family and friends as well think that way.

All: Ahhh.

Arata: It’s true that it’s understandable.

Hajime: What is? Haru, explain it in a way that I can understand.

Haru: Eh~?

Shun: He’s simply saying that he wishes that you’d stay as you are now, Hajime.

Hajime: Koi.

Koi: I don’t completely understand it as well so I’ll pass.

Yoru: It’s a happy thing to know that the king is not always perfect but is clueless in some areas, huh?

Iku: It does make one think that way, doesn’t it~?

Hajime: What do you mean…?

Aoi: -laughs- Uhm, the only ones that haven’t answered are...ah, Hajime-san and Shun-san, our leaders. Then, to continue with the flow, what parts are you two recommending?

Shun: You heard him, Hajime.

Hajime: Hm? Ah, we’re the only ones left?

Kakeru & Koi: What a nice way of changing the topic…!

Shun: Our recommendations… Something we want our fans to see, huh? What should we pick?

Hajime: Indeed. I say…

Shun: I think…

Hajime & Shun: Everything.

Haru: Who would have thought!

Kai: So the leaders’ occasional synchro finally makes an appearance here, huh~. Even so, for both of you to say ‘everything’... that was amazing!

You: Coming from Shun it’s something normal, but it’s unusual for you to say something so vague, Hajime-san.

Hajime: Is that so? This live happened during our culmination point after all. It’s something that we all put effort into. When I think about that, instead of telling the fans to look over Shun’s parts or mine--

Shun: The answer is definitely to watch everyone’s, right, Hajime?

Hajime: Yeah, the entire live.

Shun: I’d be happy if everyone watched over all of us while enjoying themselves~

Iku: I’m happy that we’re also being recommended by the leaders but… Will that be okay?

Arata: Isn’t it fine? It feels like they concluded it properly.

Koi: Although it was kinda vague, I agree that they concluded it properly.

You: They totally did~ So, won’t it be okay to end it here?

Kakeru: Alright, this should be okay! We can close it now, right, Staff-san?

Aoi: Looks like it’s okay.

Kakeru: Now then, everyone’s given their answers already so it looks like the round-table discussion ended safely like the live performance~!

Iku: Yay~! Great job, guys!

-applause-

Rui: Good job.

Yoru: Great job.

Kai: Great job~

Shun: Right then, shall we make the camera stop recording and enjoy our party a little bit more afterwards?

Hajime: And then we’ll talk about our next goals, huh?

Haru: Hehehe, I brought a lot of promotional ideas with me today.

Koi: There he goes again…!

Rui: Now then, everyone. Bye-bye.

Freo Groove - Musicians of Fremantle

Kevin Parker is pounding along the coast, between the sea and the great shattered ruin of the old South Freo Power Station, his mind buzzing with musical possibilities. He's always said you can make great music from anywhere - that place isn't a big deal. But the front man of successful psychedelic band Tame Impala recognises that Fremantle has shaped his musical journey: from his first exploratory jams with future band-mates to the modest weatherboard in South Fremantle that he's converted into a recording studio.

`I used to say that I could be anywhere in the world, and I still like to believe that, because I don't believe that the quality or the style of the music that someone makes is dependent on where they are. However, there are many things that seep into your music and one of them is where you live.

`Making the last album, Currents, I was stuck, sitting in the studio and my four walls. I got to a spot where I just wasn't feeling it and the music wasn't very evocative. I got my iPhone and headphones and walked along the beach down to the power station in Coogee. I couldn't believe how much the music opened up and spoke to me, made me feel all kinds of things again. 'A lot of the songs on Currents have passages that were directly inspired by the power house and doing laps of it. It is scary and confronting, but such a beautiful thing. I had one of the songs I was working on at the time on repeat and I wrote a lot of the lyrics down on South Beach. I suddenly remembered the value of being somewhere serene and beautiful and getting inspired in that way. I don't like to think of it as a necessity because music can be written for the purposes of escape. But so much of Currents was mentally conceived between here and the power station all along the coast.'

Gravity

He grew up in Perth, got drum lessons while in high school, and played rhythm guitar with his father, Jerry, playing lead. He went on to play music with Dom Simper, whom he met in high school. The two formed The Dee Dee Dums, the precursor to Tame Impala. Somewhere around the age of twelve, he began fooling around with cassette recorders; bouncing tracks and layering sounds, building a creative methodology that still endures, although the technology is worlds apart. His Fremantle musical story began when he was about twenty and he met the guys from the band Mink Mussel Creek.

`I was in a different band at the time, but I started hanging out and jamming with them. I was living in Subiaco then. I would leave Subiaco on Friday evening and go back on Sunday night. It was like a time warp, like another world. We would have a lot of fun and get up to mischief and make music. I thought it was amazing because it was like being in a parallel universe. It was just this black hole of the weekend when I'd be around Freo. 'It was just such an intoxicating environment, the absolute tunnel vision of the music. It was the centre of how we lived our lives. Everything was based around that. Going out for them was going out and playing a show, and we would start drinking and getting stoned in the afternoon. At some point in the night the show would happen. The show was just part of the evening. That was kind of what our lives revolved around and I just felt such a sense of belonging. A newfound identity.'

It was an intense period of short-lived bands thrown together as fluid musical experiments, with several bands running at once comprising different line-ups of the same core set of musicians. Often, he'd play two gigs a night - one with his old band, The Dee Dee Dums, and then just stay on stage for Mink Mussel Creek. There were gigs at The Swan Basement, The Railway Hotel, Mojos, and the Newport, but the Norfolk Basement - and its bar manager -provided the opportunity for Kevin to take his work to a new level.

'The Norfolk became our second home, because we met Jodie [Regan] and she fell in love with Mink Mussel Creek. She was the bar manager downstairs, and we just thought she was great. She was enchanted by us young, scruffy stoners, who were obsessed with music and didn't have any kind of ego about it. She was like, "Hey, I'll manage you" and we thought, Hey, we've got a manager! We'd go down there during the day and rehearse. The bar wouldn't open until later and I ended up doing a lot of recording down there. They had microphones and mic stands. So I could just go down there for as long as I wanted, which was a dream because up to then I had nowhere to record drums. `The first gig we ever played under the name Tame Impala was at Mojos. It was like a new and exciting time for me because it was just another step of me consolidating what I wanted musically. `There weren't a lot of people, but that didn't matter. Until I first started hanging out with those guys - hanging out in Fremantle - would care a lot more about the audience: how many and how much they were into it. After, it was, well, "they are there or they are not". Our attitude was, we are doing what we are doing because we love doing it. We're not out for approval or validation.'

A Fremantle share house provided a base for a while. Then as Tame Impala enjoyed wider success, Kevin was based in Paris before moving back to South Fremantle.

'I think it was a no-brainer. I had a lot of friends here. I bought a house and lived there for a while and then tore all the walls down and turned the entire thing into a studio and then I bought another house and moved there.'

Complexity

Kevin Parker's approach to making his own music is intense and solitary, although he has had long-standing working relationships with different local musicians. He composes in isolation and works with others to create the live performance.

'Tame Impala on the albums is just one person. It is just me multi-tracking; so basically, me recording wherever I am. 'Because I make music alone and it has got so many different parts to it, there is never a verbal conversation about it. When a band plays music, they are constantly having to talk about it to communicate it. So just from that process, just talking about it out loud, you work out what you like and you don't like. When that entire conversation stays in your head, it is just a thinking process, and you never really work out what you like and don't like and what strategies you like. It just happens. I don't have a framework. I have been doing it for that long it is something that kind of comes naturally. 'I potter in the studio even when I have other things to do. I might record a song or I just go around going, "hullo, what is this?" Unplug this...plug this in. Find a better way to record - kind of like a mad scientist. A cross between a mad scientist and an old lady in the garden pottering around. Somehow songs come out of that. `I make things more complex than they need to be. I would love my music to be simpler. I call my music "kitchen sink music". I just throw everything at it. I will think of a keyboard line - put it in. Think of a guitar line - put it in. Two different vocal melodies - put them in. As I get older I am trying to develop a musical discipline.'

Following the phenomenal commercial success of Tame Impala, Kevin's instincts and production skills, honed over countless hours and through endless musical experiments, are in high demand. As well as working with local bands, including Koi Child and Pond, he's been approached to produce a number of American artists in Los Angeles.

‘I like that I have two lives as a producer. One is doing my friends' stuff in Freo, the other is iconic artists that I've always dreamed of working with. I am suddenly in the same room. It's kind of two extremes.'

As for another Tame Impala album, Kevin will only say that there's some paint on the canvas, but he doesn't know what the final result will be.

‘The change in styles is one of the only things you can bet on. I don't think I would bother doing the same thing again. That is one of the only rules I put on myself. It has to be different and has to have evolved in some way.'

kemaren2, pas nyampe di rumah si uwa, aing bongkar2 lagi dompet hadiah dari belio. mau baca lagi surat dari belio, terus ngintip2 lagi foto yang aing pasang didompet pas lagi kasmaran2nya.

lalu berkaca lagi,

dan sadar segoblok apaan aing ampe anak sebaik itu, yang aing udah bisa pede bilang bahwa die emang cinta mampus ama aing, hubungannye bisa brubah jadi kayak sekarang.

tapi, ngomong2 soal berubah, doi juga paling doyan kalo ngestory soal itu. kemaren2 di instagramnye post soal bahwa "no one stay, everything changes". jelas betul itu soal belio yang dulu seakan2 udah simpul mati hubungannya sama aing, soal betapa janji aing buat terus bisa bareng ama doi, dan segala macam hal yang ninggalin belio, juga tentang mitsuketa arata no koi yang sekarang. bikin aing mikir, apa kelak dia juga bakal ilang dari pikiran aing, ya ? apa aing bakal nemu perasaan yang baru ya ? bukankah kalo semuanya bergerak dan berubah, aing juga termasuk didalamnya ?

tapi keinget soal kaidah materialisme dialektik: "diam merupakan bentuk gerak".

mungkin aing memang bergerak sebagaimana doi bergerak. tapi rasa urang (sejauh ini) masih sama. harapan urg selama ini juga masih sama. shiawase ni narimasu youni. amin.
