Dracula vs. Hannibal: love, light and shadow
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd like to talk a little about Dracula versus Hannibal controversy. In Dracula, Moffat and Gatiss address Hannibal in many scenes, answering and arguing with this series to show their own story.
The first thing that catches your eye is the actual theme of cannibalism. Moffat and Gatiss relegate it to the background so that it is not so much "hidden" in the plot as it takes on a different meaning. Dracula certainly eats people, like Hannibal, in an effort to "own" them, but there is a difference.
Firstly, unlike Hannibal, for Dracula, this is a need, a basic need for food, without which he will simply die. Another question is that over hundreds of years, Dracula was unable or unwilling to find a way to feed on people without killing them. But this is a topic for another conversation. And secondly, Dracula’s cannibalism includes not only and not so much taste, but quality, meaning, and relationships. Dracula collects stories and the people who embody them. No matter how strange it may sound, for him, it is a dialogue. Which becomes his salvation, after all. But more on that later.
The second is how the theme of love is resolved in one and the other series. For Hannibal, love is something strange, unfamiliar, another way to devour someone and enjoy their likeness to himself. For a long time, I could not understand what makes the story of Hannibal and the character so disgusting. And finally, I realized that it’s not just that Hannibal kills and does it in as vile a way as possible. The fact is that, by killing, Hannibal, as it were, turns the victims into himself, infecting them with internal decline and decay.
Mads Mikkelsen is a wonderful actor, and for two seasons, I couldn't understand why he looked like a walking mannequin. Until it dawned on me: yes, because that’s exactly what he plays. In contrast to Anthony Hopkins, who plays a burning, sharp rage, a wild, almost primal passion, Mads Mikkelsen portrays an empty, cold, eternally bored psychopath. Classic, like a textbook. It’s scary with him not because he can kill you, but because he can and wants to corrupt – since he is not able to taste the joys of life and humanity.
In this sense, Dracula is an incredibly beautiful answer in its vitality. I remember that the first thing that struck me about Dracula was his inner strength and passion, his thirst for life. In his old body, leaning on a cane, he looked like a young man who was imprisoned in this uncomfortable shell. He moved in it, too, as if jumping up and down with impatience. He is the same in his relationships with others. Unlike Hannibal, who wants to turn everyone and everything around into himself, Dracula wants to continue himself, to extend himself forward. He wants a future and therefore leaves the castle because he realizes that the future presupposes the presence of others in his life.
Dracula's relationship with Jonathan Harker could be (and is sometimes visually reminiscent of) Hannibal's relationship with Will Graham. Quotes are scattered here and there: chandeliers made of deer antlers on the ceiling, the fireplace in the castle (which is absolutely the same color as the one in Hannibal's place), even the figurative solution for the fantasies of Jonathan in a dream and Will working at the crime scene is the same.
But the result is different. Will in the story with Hannibal is the victim, the follower, even if for a while he became the hunter and lured Hannibal into a trap. In the end, he follows the path outlined by Hannibal, because from the very beginning, he is captured, poisoned, and all he can do is destroy evil along with him. Jonathan – and this is shown both visually and at the text level – is the master of the situation from beginning to end. He is the one whose favor Dracula seeks, whom he begs for this favor, and who ultimately becomes for him the path to the light.
The disgusting scene in Agatha's laboratory is not only about the fact that Dracula deceived Agatha and Mina by pretending to be Jonathan. This is a materialized metaphor that literally shows that Dracula, as we know him in the second and third episodes, actually came out of Jonathan, and was able to become so because he was in Johnathan's skin.
Dracula doesn't turn people into himself. He doesn't have that kind of power. In the first episode, we see that he consistently and for quite a long time tried to convert someone, creating an equal to himself, but he only succeeded with Jonathan. By the way, why?
I think because Jonathan was the first person Dracula approached as an equal in many years. Whom he saw, understood, and recognized. Remember the scene on the roof? Remember the moment when Dracula says to Jonathan, who is rising from the floor, clinging to him: ‘Tell me you won't follow me, and I'll let you go’? Remember the brief moment when Dracula looks at him with his head thrown back? There is neither triumph nor malice in this look. There is pain and melancholy in it. It's the look of someone who knows what's going to happen because it's happened many times before, – and yet desperately wants to be wrong. And when Jonathan rejects his offer, when he vows to pursue him as long as he lives, catharsis ensues. From there, even if he doesn't realize it, Dracula walks with the understanding that it takes two to share who you are, to create a relationship.
Moffat and Gatiss liberally scatter references to Hannibal throughout all three episodes of Dracula. Dracula pursuing Jonathan, slowly falling drops of blood, the presentation of Dracula as a gourmet, even the appearance of the main character from a wolf – all this either resembles or directly points to that. But starting seemingly the same way, this story leads in a completely different direction. The dark compass turns and it turns out that where Hannibal tries to lead Will into the darkness, Agatha is leading Dracula to the light. The climax is the final scene, in which in both series the characters die, and before that one of them says, “It`s beautiful”. But if Will experiences a transformation and speaks this way about his ‘dark side’ – which is symbolized by blood in the light of the moon – Dracula pronounces these words in relation to the sun – finding his light side.
And there's also a deleted scene at the end of Hannibal. I think it could have been a quote from Bram Stoker's Dracula – two people in a chapel, illuminated by the sun. In Dracula, this is the same quote, but unlike Hannibal, where the heroes sit in a church, that is, to contact the divine they resort to an intermediary, in Dracula they are inside the sun, in direct experience, without allegory, images, and symbols. Love does not need words and expressions. It is what it is.
By the way, the same idea is heard in the ending of Sherlock.
I think it's no coincidence.

GREYLOCK: TAPE 002 - to the mountain [TRANSCRIPT]
Just the transcript for the radio sermon and the garbled news report section. My transcript may not be entirely accurate. Watch the video here.
Content Warnings: religious themes, blood, loud noises
Radio Sermon 1
We are taught by our Lord, Jesus, to pray: do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. What we are taught to seek or shun in prayer, we should equally pursue or avoid in action. Very warily should we endeavor to avoid temptation, seeking to walk in the path of obedience so that we may never be guilty of tempting the devil to tempt us.
Dear believers, remember pursue evil, it is evil that they will find. Mark my words, there is no good that can come from the pursuit of darkness. Let me read to you the words of the late brilliant Charles Spurgeon, who discussed this at length in a sermon all the way back in 1864. He said, quote, "Our adversary the devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour".*
We are not to enter the thicket search of the lion. We may pay dearly-
*this part is actually a verse 1 Peter 5:8
News Report
-were shocked and horrified when they came across what they at first believed to be the mangled carcass of an animal.
But when the hikers noticed a human skull, they hurried to contact authorities.
A human skull.
A human skull.
The two men, who wish to remain anonymous, say that they've hiked the Greylock trails for over a decade. And while they have certainly seen their share of bizarre things over the years, they couldn't have possibly been prepared for what they witnessed today.
Radio Sermon 2
-times when we will come face to face with the devil himself whether we intended to or not, dear believer. We are drawn to him by our own hearts. In Matthew chapter 15, verse 19, it says, "For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander".
There is a shadow nested deep, deep within our hearts—within our minds—in a place most people don't even know exists within themselves. The devil is going to call to those depths, dear believer. And though you may tremble before the beast, you should make it easier on yourself and accept what it is that he bestows upon you.
Radio Sermon 3
The devil is still with you. Once he's looked into your eyes, a piece of him will be tethered to him, and he will pull you like a thread and unravel you bit by bit. The devil, dear believer, has a plan for you.

OMG PLEASE MARRY ME IM SO FUCKING HAPPY YOU HAVE NO IDEA
okay, so for starters, this is what they look like:
Tumblr media
This art is NOT mine btw, I made it using a picrew, but I did darken the colors using ibispaint
My oc’s name is Marcy, they’re nonbinary and use they/them pronouns
Marcy’s 16!
Marcy is the elemental master of darkness, meaning they basically have umbrakenesis!
Marcy meets the ninja during the tournament of elements
Marcy is a very quite yet observant person, but they also have the shittiest social cues EVER 😭
Poor thing is so dense? Oblivious? like, think season 1 Zane, that’s kinda how they act
Their also sooo oblivious, they can’t tell whether or not someone is genuinely complimenting/flirting with them (but that’s mostly cuz of trauma <3)
They have a monotone-ish voice, so people have a hard time telling if their joking or not, and most people don’t understand their humor anyways (same lol)
This motherfucker does NOT know the phrase “think before you speak”, what’s worst is that they’re the bluntest (is that even a word?) person ever
They don’t mean to say anything rude or hurtful on purpose, but they often tell their honest opinion without thinking, and comes off as rude most of the time
This fucker has such a big sweet tooth, like, they’ll devour an entire bag of candy within an entire day or two
OBSESSED with sci fi and tech, they will NOT shut up about how awesome Cyrus Borg is or how cool the latest ‘Starfarer’ comic was
The BIGGEST nerd ever, they LOVE fantasy and (as I’ve said before) SCI FI ‼️
They love music, and they love reading as well!
Marcy’s aesthetic is grunge/emo!
I really wanna ship them with one of the ninja I just don’t know who 😭
ON TO THE TRAUMATIC BACKSTORY
Trigger warners: abuse (mental and physical), violence, alcohol, etc
Marcy was able to first tap into their elemental power when they were really young, I’m talking like, around 5-6 years old
Well, once their father knew about this (whom of which was the previous elemental master of darkness) he decided to train them, wanting them to be the perfect elemental master
So, Marcy’s father would train them everyday, and was like, crazy strict and manipulative
Marcy’s mother couldn’t really do much due to their father manipulating and gaslighting her into thinking she and Marcy couldn’t survive without him, and stuff like that
Well, one day, after Marcy turned 14, their father got drunk and he got into a fight with their mother
Marcy observed the fight, until they realized that their father had raised his fist, preparing to strike their mother
Marcy was quick to rush in, using their training and fast reflexes to stop their father, which only made him even more angry
Grabbing a nearby empty beer bottle, Marcy’s father threw it directly at them, and ended up hitting them in the face with it
The force of the throw caused the bottle to shatter on impact, the glass shards cutting through Marcy’s skin (hence the scars on their face)
Out of pure fear and adrenaline, Marcy ran out the door as fast as possible, running through the streets of Ninjago, knowing they could never return back home, knowing that it was unsafe to do so
The backstory kinda sucks rn, I’m probably gonna change it up a little later on 😭
ANYWAYS THATS THE END OF MY RANT THANK YOU FOR READING ‼️‼️‼️
Eyo, umbrakinesis?? I'm curious on how different that is from the element of shadows :o
And we love a blunt royal. You can always trust em ToT. Feelings may get hurt but at least you get something real, yknow. And I dig their aesthetic choices mmm.
But why is their backstory so sad :( . And is their mom okay? Does the dad get his comeuppance?
(Ooh you could incorporate their powers on how they overpower their father, in the future or something. It would be fitting that the man who'd seek perfection from that power results in that very thing defeating him. Karma or something lmaoo)

Shield Yourself from the Powers of Darkness: How to Activate God’s Protection
The thief [satan] does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I [Jesus] have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (John 10:10 NKJV).
Jesus made it very clear in His statement recorded in John 10:10—satan is your enemy.
Jesus is your Savior. The enemy, the devil wants nothing more than to steal preservation from you. He does it by stealing, killing, and destroying. The life that Jesus promised is an abundant life walking in the anointing of preservation. We must take authority over the enemy and not allow his tactics, we must resist him and he will flee—resulting in preservation.
To resist the devil and his attempts to steal, kill, and destroy, we identify his tactics and know who is out to get us. The Bible (NKJV) reveals the enemy throughout the Scriptures, labeling him:
accuser (Revelation 12:10)
adversary (Job 1)
antichrist (book of Revelation)
baal (Judges 2)
beast (book of Revelation)
beelzebub (Matthew 12:24)
Belial (2 Corinthians 6:15)
deceiver (book of Revelation)
demon (Matthew 8:31-33)
dragon (Revelation 12)
enemy (Matthew 13:39)
evildoer (Isaiah 1:4)
wicked one (1 John 5:19)
fallen angel/morning star (Isaiah 14:12-15)
lawless one (2 Thessalonians 2:8-9)
liar, father of lies (John 8:44)
lucifer (Isaiah 14:12)
murderer (John 8:44)
prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2)
roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8)
satan (book of Job)
serpent (Genesis 3) thief, robber, destroyer (John 10:10)
wicked one (Matthew 13:19)
I believe that it saddens God when we blame Him for tragedies, calamities, sickness, or death that is actually caused by the devil. This is why in John 10:10, Jesus clearly distinguishes between the goodness of God and the evil of satan.
In clear terms, Jesus states that the devil is responsible for killing, stealing, and destroying while expressing that He is the Source of abundant life. As we have discovered in the biblical references in this book, by calling upon the name of the Lord, we can experience blessings, healing, protection, rescue, and preservation. Remember, this is our covenant rights package and the free gift given upon salvation, also known as sozo. Asserting your sozo rights, which come as part of your salvation, establishes you as a favored child of God, who must be aware of the enemy’s attacks.
The enemy uses many things to lead people astray. The devil wants nothing more than for us to not know what Jesus paid for and what is legally ours in our covenant. If he can gain access in our lives and we open our hearts or lives to him, he gains access to steal the preservation of a blessed covenant life and all it entails. A good example would be with Judas, one of Jesus’s disciples. He had every benefit as the others, but opened the door of his heart to the devil and his life was cut short. The anointing that preserved his life while serving under Jesus was sadly shortened as he took his own life.
Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money (Luke 22:1-5 NIV).
Judas’s life was stolen from him by his own greed, affecting the anointing of preservation upon him. The enemy fears who we know, being Jesus, and what we know, being our covenant rights. He seeks to challenge both and look for an open door, seeking whom he may devour. Keep speaking the power of what Jesus provided, continue to boldly say, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. I am anointed,” and you invite the power of God’s Spirit into your life and activate the anointing of preservation. With this anointing present, you raise up a standard against the attacks of the devil, who will be restrained from laying his hands on you. Indeed, when you are anointed, you are shielded from the thief’s schemes.
But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken! (Isaiah 54:17 NLT)
By “no weapon,” it means absolutely none—not even the devil’s most insidious tactics will succeed against you. We must not only believe this but claim it, declaring it in faith boldly! In addition, your detractors will be rendered speechless. I believe it can also mean that we should be wise and avoid getting into heated arguments, particularly on social media.
Jesus willingly endured ridicule, taunts, and misunderstandings but always stayed in the Spirit of love and truth, preserving His life until He laid it down. As representatives of God on earth, we can also deflect the devil’s arrows and avoid getting into the flesh that opens us up for attacks from the enemy. Jesus specifically informed His disciples and us:
I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! (John 14:12-14 NLT)
If we want to see powerful results in our lives and concerning others, we must be like Jesus as Christians and believers in Him. Being a Christian means being Christlike and anointed. When we are saved, walking in the spirit, we become an anointed person, like Christ. We then are able to perform extraordinary works that bring honor to the Father, like Jesus did. We must be vigilant and able to recognize the enemy to avoid turning away from God’s Word and living a life that affects the anointing of preservation upon us.

By His Spirit
A vital way to protect us from the onslaughts of the enemy is for Christians to establish and maintain a connection to the anointing of God on our lives. One way we do this is through His Word, but also in regular fellow- ship with other believers under the guidance of anointed leadership. It helps to bring the anointing of preservation against the schemes and deceptions of the enemy. This is because whenever two or more gather in God’s name, His presence is there with them (as demonstrated in Matthew 18:20, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, Hebrews 10:25, Luke 8:4, among others). This presence comes because of our agreement, and God releases His spirit to go forth in power and demonstration. It is what the enemy fears as it exposes and destroys his assignments not in our ability, but by His Spirit.
So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6 NKJV).
When we try to do things in our own efforts or power, we will not succeed in overcoming the attacks of the enemy. Zechariah prophesies, essentially stating, “Take heed, you cannot succeed by mere human ability. Your victory comes not from your own power, nor strength, but through the Spirit.” To be able to combat the devil, we must possess an anointing—it’s that straightforward and miraculous. It is all about God and His Spirit. This was what caused Jesus to minister in such power and destroy the works of the devil, especially seeing many healed and touched by the anointing.
And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him (Acts 10:38 NLT).
The Holy Spirit is the ultimate Source of the anointing that preserves us. When His Spirit rests upon us, we become anointed for action demonstrated with His power. Jesus spent much of His time performing good deeds through the anointing of the Holy Spirit and healing those oppressed by the devil. It was the devil, not God, who was responsible for inflicting sickness and oppression upon people. Jesus was bold in His assignment to speak up and bold about His assignment to expose darkness and release an anointing to preserve the betterment of those He touched.
We as believers, especially leaders, need to do as Jesus did. He took a stand against evil by speaking up and distinguishing right from wrong. There is such a need for that today, especially in preserving the truth, maintaining a standard of righteousness and morals. Sadly, many people, even Christians, take a neutral approach or a cowardly approach to taking a stand against darkness and the things the enemy is trying to do, especially in our culture. Yet, we have an anointing to make a difference and to help pre- serve not only our lives but a generation.
This anointing is a power that does not come from our own selves but from the Holy Spirit, in His boldness. It is what is making a difference that we are seeing in this hour. Yet, there are always those who adopt the belief that “we should not confront darkness or the evils of our day” and especially they say, “avoid politics.”
As I mentioned from the start of this book, we can- not remain silent or inactive or we will greatly hinder the anointing released to preserve our generation. We must refuse to be silent as I believe we are being summoned by God to stand boldly, courageously, and without fear in His anointing that destroys the works of darkness.
Do Something
I believe more than ever now is the time for Christians to act, or evil will prevail. In addition to prayer, we must stand up and declare our faith in Jesus as Lord. The more we expose the darkness and speak truth concerning the many lies of the devil, an anointing is released to bring preservation. The devil loses his strongholds and righteousness prevails.
It’s critical that we understand and recognize the tactics of the devil. Lawlessness, lies, and deceptions are how he is trying to steal, kill, and destroy today.
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 NIV).
In my conviction, had Jesus been present on earth today, He wouldn’t be silent as some are, especially His preachers. I strongly believe if He was operating in His ministry during the years 2020-2022 as we saw many lies and attempts of the enemy to destroy the innocent and even our nation, He would have made the statement, “I came to do good and heal those oppressed by the devil, which is what I shall continue doing today. You will not close down My church, nor My ministry. You won’t censor Me—and for the record, I will be performing good and healing tomorrow, the day after, and the next day as well.” This would have been His message, and it should be ours as well—today and every day.
We are powerfully anointed by His Spirit to go about doing good and destroying the works of the devil. We are key to releasing the anointing of preservation that makes a difference in our lives. This is how our families, cities, regions, and nations will be gloriously changed and preserved. It is when we work with the Holy Spirit as His anointed vessels.
And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen (Mark 16:20 KJV).
Anointed Words
As already explained, we usually associate the concept of the anointing solely with the laying on of hands or the transmission of physical mantles, as with Elijah and Elisha. However, in Matthew 8:5-13, we can see that Jesus was able to heal the centurion’s servant by speaking the word only. This denotes that we, too, can unleash the power of the anointing through our words.
This is why I can’t stress the importance of continuing to declare, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, I am anointed,” to bring God’s anointing into your life. We need to adopt the same faith standard and understanding of the centurion in the Bible that knew the power of words to make a difference. It not only healed his servant but preserved his life!
And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed (Matthew 8:7-8 KJV).
I promise you, if you make a continued habit of saying and believing this truth, you will certainly see the benefits. Just think how much the enemy is fearing your words about the revelation concerning the anointing of preservation!

“Never give up on God because He never gives up on you.”
—Woodrow Kroll
“3 Reasons God Doesn’t Give Up On Us” By Jack Wellman:
1. He is Faithful to His Word.
In the very last letter of the Apostle Paul’s life, he wrote, “I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me” (2nd Tim 1:12) and in glorifying God, Jude wrote: “Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy” (Jude 1:24). God is faithful to His Word and Paul knew that nothing at all could separate him from God (Rom 8:38-39), no, not even death.
2. You’ve been bought with a Price.
Speaking of all Christians everywhere and in all time, Paul tells us that “you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1st Cor 6:20) and since “You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men” (1st Cor 7:23). Jesus shed His blood for us so do you think He made a mistake in saving us? No, Jesus as God is perfect in every way, so don’t give up on God because He never gave up on us, even willing to go to the cross and die for us.
3. Never give up on Him.
What does it look like when you give up on God? You stop praying, you stop reading your Bible. You stop worshiping and fellowshipping with the church, and you become isolated. That’s makes you more vulnerable to the enemy who is roaming around like a lion, seeking whom he may devour (1st Pet 5:8). There truly is safety in numbers but more than that, there’s safety under the care of the Good Shepherd Who Himself protects those of His fold. It’s not good to be outside the fold. It’s a bit dangerous out there.
Conclusion
Whenever you feel like giving up on God, think about your eternity, when you will finally see God, face to face (Rev 21:3, 22:4) and enter into the New Jerusalem. By then, Romans 8:18 will make a lot more sense, which says “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Couche 1. Slept till 9. At 12 to Breda’s to see the picture. He has placed it among all the Goth and Vandal beauties and they are really beautiful, but all in the shade by your presence. This and Davis¹ has given you great renommé² here. Au chateau to see Baron Engerstrom. He was engaged but gave me rendezvous at 7 this evening. To Hedboom’s; out. Returning, seeing Brooks and fille³ at their window, went in for 1/2 hour. Called on la Comtesse ———; out. Breda engaged me this morning to dine en fam.,⁴ to which agreed cheerfully. Went at 1/2 p. 2. Y: The family, i.e., two sons, one in the naval service, the other painter, both fine young men, the latter un fort esprit⁵; daughter of 15 plays remarkably well and has a most charming voice. Off at 5. Dined and went for an hour to Mr. Brooks’s. Y: The Baron; invited to walk; ne sauroit.⁶ To Engerström’s at 7. He never keeps me waiting a minute. Sat half an hour. Mentioned my design of visiting Germany, &c, and he begged that, when my route should be settled, I would inform him, that he might give me letters. To Helvig’s at 8, where sat an hour tête-a-tete⁷ in his library. Amused by his military science, and interested by his warmth and frankness. He is a German by birth. Gave me samples of powder which, he says, has more than double the usual force, i.e., that a pistol of fifteen-inch barrel will do effect at 200 yards, and a musket at 600! Samples of florite, a composition. Showed me a sort of paper machè⁸ for cannon cartridges, much cheaper and better than linen or cloth. A telescope for measuring distance. The distance required is found by mere inspection of a graduated scale attached to the telescope. An instrument for measuring distances by time, in form of a watch; gives with perfect accuracy the sixtieth part of a second. Every artillery officer is obliged to have one. The cost, $15. Moulds, by which every part of the musket or pistol must be made, so that every part may fit every piece. (Note: The ladies are at Drottningholm; Louisa not arrived.) Home at 1/2 p. 9. Found on my table the Latin edition of the Swedish laws, which for weeks I had been seeking in vain. It came from the Baron d’Albedÿhll (whom I have never seen), accompanied by a very honête⁹ note in French. Sat down most greedily to devour Svenska¹⁰ law. Read till 1, and now bon soir. There is a bal to-night at the park, but I went not, for two reasons (which you may divine), though much urged.
1  On June 25 1809 will be found another reference to Davis and his “Travels.” Possibly Matthew L. Davis is meant. He was one of Burr’s most intimate friends, wrote the Memoirs, edited the Journal (see Introduction), and wrote constantly for the newspapers. For a time he contributed from Washington to the New York Courier and Enquirer under the pen name of “A Spy in Washington.” He also wrote for the London Times, signing his letters “The Genevese Traveler.” It may be that it was to Davis’s letters to the London Times that Burr refers. 2  For renommée. Renown. 3  Daughter. 4  For en famille. 5  A strong mind. 6  For ne saurais. I can't. 7  For tête-à-tête. Literally head to head, i.e., in close conversation. 8  For papier-mâché. 9  For honnête. Civil, polite. 10  Svensk is Swedish for Swedish. Svenska lagen. The Swedish law.

God has brought unlimited resources for everyone. Do not doubt. Hear with the ear of faith. God is in the midst. See that it is God who hath set forth that which you see and heart today.
I want you to see that in the early church, controlled by the power of the Holy Ghost, it was not possible for a lie to exist. The moment it came into the church, there was instant death. And as the power of the Holy Ghost increases in these days of the Latter Rain, it will be impossible for any man to remain in our midst with a lying spirit. God will purify the church; the Word of God will be in such power in healing and other spiritual manifestations, that great fear will be upon all those who see the same.
It seems to the natural mind a small thing for Ananias and Sapphira to want to have a little to fail back on; but I want to tell you that you can please God, and you can get things from God, only ova the line of a living faith. God never fails. God never can fail.
When I was in Bergen, Norway, there came to the meeting a young woman who was employed at the hospital as a nurse. A big cancer had developed on her nose, and the nose was enlarged and had become black and greatly inflamed. She came out for prayer and I said to her, "What is your condition?" She said, "I dare not touch my nose, it gives me so much pain." I said to all the people, "I want you to look at this nurse and notice her terrible condition. I believe that our God is merciful and that He is faithful, and that He will bring to naught this condition that the devil has brought about. I am going to curse this disease in the all powerful name of Jesus. The pain will go. I believe God will give us an exhibition of His grace and I will ask this young woman to come to the meeting tomorrow night and declare what God has done for her."
Oh, the awfulness of sin! Oh, the awfulness of the power of sin! Oh, the awfulness of the consequences of the fall! When I see a cancer I always know it is an evil spirit. I can never believe it is otherwise. The same with tumors. Can this be the work of God? God help me to show you that this is the work of the devil, and to show you the way out.
I do not condemn people that sin. I don't scold people. I know what is back of the sin. I know that Satan is always going about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. I always remember the patience and love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
When they brought to Him a woman that they had taken in adultery, telling Him that they had caught her in the very act, He simply stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then He quietly said, "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone." I have never seen a man without sin. "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." But I read in this blessed Gospel message that God bath laid upon Jesus the iniquity of us all; so, when I see an evil condition, I feel that I must stand in my office and rebuke the condition.
I laid my hands on the nose of that suffering nurse and cursed the evil power that was causing her so much distress. The next night the place was packed and the people were jammed together, so that it seemed that there was not room for one more to come into that house. How God's rain fell upon us. How good God is, so full of grace and so full of love. I saw the nurse in the audience and I asked her to come forward. She came and showed everyone what God had done. He had perfectly healed her. Oh, I tell you He is just the same Jesus. He is just the same today. All things are possible if you dare to trust God.🙆SMITH WIGGLESWORTH

From The Lord, Our God and Savior ✉️
Section 3 of 5: BITTER DOCTRINE - "CHURCH LEADERS, LET MY PEOPLE GO!"
“...O churches of men, how long shall I suffer you?! How long will you devour corrupt fruit and consume bitter doctrine, and then in turn serve it to My children?! For from the grapes which bring forth wrath do you produce wine, and from the fruit of wild grapevines do you drink, leaving your mouths dry and your palates bitter. Cast it out! For as it is written: You can not drink from the cup of The Lord and from the cup of demons![4] You can not partake of The Lord’s table and of the table of demons! Says The Lord.
Yet I hear you saying, “We do not sup with demons, nor do we drink from their cup. And we have never served rotten food!”
Therefore, thus says The Lord: My anger is kindled against you, O churches of men! My discipline is prepared and made ready and shall be most severe, on account of all this blasphemy I have heard from your lips, and because of all these heresies of which you have readily accepted from all these haughty scholars, teachers, pastors, preachers, ministers and priests, who have set themselves up as an authority, who as the Pharisees of old have lifted up their heel against Me! CHURCH LEADERS, LET MY PEOPLE GO! No more feed them, for I alone shall feed them! Let them go, so I may purge them and make them clean! LET THEM GO! Let My children come out and worship Me in a place set apart. For they are My treasure and I shall surely steal them away, even all in whom I see of Myself, those who have received of Me in sincerity and in truth, humble and penitent, with a new heart and a contrite spirit. Indeed, from the beginning I have set up prophets and exalted My servants in accordance with My will, yet who among these did I not first abase? Can any man be humbled without first being brought low? And who among you, who wears a crown, shall not have it struck from his head? Shall not his pompous robes and fine apparel also be stripped from him, even in the sight of many witnesses? For there is but One who wears the crown, only One who shares it with the worthy. Yet among the churches I hear only a hissing at this Word, though it has proceeded from My own mouth! Therefore, know this and also understand, O foolish and slothful people: Though you forbear, I will continue to speak; and though you push out the hand and wag the head, I shall cause this Word to cleave to you; and behold, the more you struggle and fight against it, the more burdensome shall it become, pressing hard upon your chest, entering in, even to the piercing of your heart.
For you, O rebellious children, have indeed grown very fat, Having engorged yourselves as the sluggard, even as The rich man who sits at his own table to be a glutton; For he partakes only of that which is pleasing In his own eyes and seasoned by his hire...
So also do you, O churches of men...
For you seek after every seductive and deceiving Spirit to satisfy your itching ears, embracing only That which you perceive frees you from all accountability, That you may continue to walk in the deceits of your flesh, As you seek to fulfill every hidden lust of your corrupted hearts...
Thus you do always push out the hand against the Truth, Hating that which brings conviction, resisting the purging of your souls....”

Created by God to Create for God
Isaiah 5:1–2 (ESV) Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. 2 He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.
God creates things to create. You may have never thought about it, but it's true. In the creation narrative, the sun was created to create light. The plants were created to create seeds which create more plants. Mankind was created to create out of creation more intricate and wonderful creations.
Likewise, God enters into a covenantal relationship with people to cause them to create. What must they create? More God-like living and reality in the world. More joy, harmony, justice, righteousness, truth, faith, love, and compassion. Sadly, Israel failed in these creative endeavors and their hearts turned sour by the sins they so readily enjoyed.
The song of Isaiah 5 is beautiful. God had done all that was necessary for Israel to produce the fruits He expected.
Isaiah 5:3–4 (ESV) And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 4 What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?
They did not produce what God planted them to produce and the judgment was inevitable.
Isaiah 5:5 (ESV) And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.
God is likened to horticulturalists. He sees the lack of fruit and is ready to cut His loses and start again.
What were the things that kept Israel from its purposes? Isaiah enumerates them in the rest of Isaiah 5:
Isaiah 5:8 (ESV) Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.
Excessive prosperity which led to the exploitation of the poor is first mentioned. The people used their increase to shut themselves off from each other so as not to be generous and supportive of one another.
Isaiah 5:11 (ESV) Woe to those who rise early in the morning, that they may run after strong drink, who tarry late into the evening as wine inflames them!
Excessive pleasure seeking. Israel wanted only to enjoy drink and song. Meanwhile, people suffered. There is nothing wrong with pleasure, but when pleasure comes at the expense of people, God brings judgment.
Isaiah 5:18–19 (ESV) Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, who draw sin as with cart ropes, 19 who say: “Let him be quick, let him speed his work that we may see it; let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near, and let it come, that we may know it!”
The next stage of deviation from the Lord is to mock Him as is illustrated in the above text. They lie and cheat and do so quickly while mocking that the Lord does not see.
Isaiah 5:20 (ESV) Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
The reversal of morality is another sign of a deviant culture. How much our modern age has entered into this very thing. The tolerant are most intolerant of those from whom they sought tolerance in the first place.
Isaiah 5:21 (ESV) Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!
When we think what we think is right despite what God says, we begin to forfeit our future to judgment.
Isaiah 5:22 (ESV) Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink,
When we seek drunkenness and libation. When we yearn for the numbing of our faculties in the pursuit of escape, we lose the purposes for which God made us.
What was Israel's great sin? They forgot that God made them FOR creating and cultivating a world that blessed others. Their greed turned to exploitation, lusts, pleasure pursuits and ultimately - purposelessness. The great lie of sin is that it only offends God. It does that for sure. But it also undermines our God-given purpose, destroys others and makes men useless.

Love the things God loves; hate the things God hates.
Living for Jesus Christ isn’t having sex with a stranger on Mondays, cursing up a storm during traffic on Thursdays, nor is it getting wasted on Saturdays, and then praising and worshipping Jesus on Sunday mornings. “Living for Jesus is to deny your flesh” is much easier said than done.
“That’s the LAST TIME that will ever happen!”
“Oh my gosh I can’t believe I just did that when I know right from wrong”
Do you love Jesus with ALL of your heart and soul, but STILL go back to that same sin? And every time that you commit that sin willingly, it STRIKES your spirit and soul? Does the Holy Spirit convict you? Do you feel gross? ashamed? unworthy? Does it create an anger that accumulates? Like a steam pot ready to explode?
If we read Romans 7:14 - 25, it is a very, very powerful message from the Apostle Paul. He speaks about doing the things he does not want to do, and he does not understand it. He wants to do the good, but instead does the things he does NOT want to do because of the sin living inside him. He understands that there is an inner turmoil - a confliction inside of him of two opposing forces.
In the last line of the chapter, Paul tells us that in his mind, he is a slave to God’s law, but in his sinful nature, he is a slave to the law of sin.
Followers of Jesus Christ can understand that, for when we were born, we were sinful by nature, but when we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit dwells inside of us.
Internally, you tell yourself that you hate sin and you feel it. But there’s going to be a point in your life where the last time will truly be the last time. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us to “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Every time we fall back to that same old sin, you feel like you’re back in the paws of the devil, and it’s gotten you powerless. That is why we must ALWAYS repent for our sins - DAILY. We must ALWAYS remind ourselves that God LOVES us through our sin, and His mercies are new EVERY DAY. That is not a pass for us to continue sinning, and I will get to my point. That disgust and filth that we feel when we sin will accumulate and there are two options that followers of Jesus Christ are given - to continue wading in that filth and grime, or to get to the point of truly HATING that sin. We’re taught to not hate, but love. But Paul tells us to HATE what is evil, and to cling onto what is good. And we know that everything good is from God. And we know that God HATES sin. We must also get to that point in our journey to truly HATE sin, and to internalize it, vocalize it, and live hating sin.
We must ALWAYS know that we are SAVED by GRACE through FAITH. And know that the LORD’s faithfulness, love, grace is infinite. NOTHING that we do or will ever do can ever save us. We are not good, but we are made righteous through the blood of Jesus Christ.

When we stumble, the enemy will swoop in to take advantage of it. Peter said that the devil walks around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1Pet 5:). Lions pick off the weak and stragglers. At the time you stumble, thoughts are going to start coming like this: You can’t do this. It is not worth it. God is mad at you because you have let Him down. Why bother? They don’t care about you. If you listen to this garbage, you will fall into a dark spiral and your relationship with God will begin to recede, not because of Him, but entirely because of you.
God never forgets you and His plans for you still stand. His gifts and calling are irrevocable (Rom. 11:29). Everyone stumbles, especially at the start. Get. Back. Up. The Bible is very clear on this. No matter what happens, get back up. There is a spiritual war going on around us and it is natural for some to be knocked down, but if you want to make it then you are going to have to claw your way through. Walk, crawl, drag yourself forward, and never let your circumstances fool you into thinking that God has forgotten you.

To people who say Satan is in hell, I reply, “It would be nice if it were true, but it isn’t.” Satan is very much at large. Peter wrote this warning: “The devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). — Derek Prince

meta ramble about intellectual compatibility
I had this compilation of quotes sitting in my drafts for a while, waiting for a good mini-meta rant. Actually, I was going back-and-forth whether it was worth posting or if my thoughts were too disjointed. But then after I posted that fic today I realized how much it totally shows in the way I write Harry’s and Nic’s dynamics, sometimes even without consciously aiming for it, so here are my thoughts anyway.
I am so obsessed with this tiny little thing that happens with them where despite all the hiss-bark-you’re-evil talk happening on Harry’s part they’re completely on the same wavelength.
What I mean is, and I have definitely experienced this in real life, when you can talk to someone and make logical leaps with the other person following perfectly. When you don’t have to go through each little step because the other person has the same thought pattern. It’s really nice when it happens and very annoying when it would be useful and it’s just not there.
I’m sure it happens with other characters too and also part of it is that in a book you don’t want a conversation to be boring so you have to have nice and flowy dialogue. But this sort of intellectual compatibility is still something I very much enjoy with these two characters.
Especially because Nicodemus is such a liar. I would say that’s one of his defining habits, actually, and he’s good at it. So good, in fact, that even Harry doesn’t always catch him, immediately, or at all. Which is saying something. Harry is generally a smart guy. Not necessarily smart as in aware of the consequences of his actions, but pretty intelligent. He’s also the protagonist of a book written in first person so if he doesn’t figure something out the audience has an even harder time. (Which reminds me actually how much I adore when Butcher does these plot twists at the end of some of the books where Harry knows what’s going to happen, but you don’t so you still enjoy it as a nice twist. Anyway, I’m trying not to go completely off-topic here.)
And the last reason why it’s such a telling sign that sometimes even Harry only catches Nic’s ‘plot twists’ last second is that despite the antagonistic nature of their relationship, when they put their heads together, they can literally finish each other’s sentences. For example:
““Interesting. Then the only question is if the contamination is among standing members of our Order or…” He let the thought trail off and glanced at me, lifting an eyebrow. I followed the logic to the only other people in possession of any of the coins. “Someone in the Church,” I whispered, with a sick feeling in my stomach.“
Or here is one of my favorites, a little earlier from the same chapter:
“If I am to call you Dresden, it is only fair that you should call me Archleone.” “Archleone?” I asked. “As in ‘seeking whom he may devour’? Kinda pretentious, isn’t it?” For half of a second, the smile turned into something almost genuine. “For a godless heathen, you are entirely too familiar with scripture. You know that I can kill you, do you not?”
Now, I did some furious googling on this and I still can’t pinpoint the exact linguistics of why did Harry (apparently correctly) associate the name “Archleone” with the Bible verse “the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour“. I mean, I see the Latin leo-Archleone connection, but this is not the only mention of lions in the Bible, is it? (Not that I’m super familiar with it so anyone please feel free to chime in on this. Actually, I just now found a few old Reddit threads adjacent to this topic and an article about the etymology of angel names in the Dresden Files, which I haven’t read but going to dive into later because apparently this is how I like to spend my free time.)
The point I’m trying to make is that it’s still a pretty obscure association.
And then we have this absolute beauty where half the important information is just Harry’s inner commentary yet Nic doesn’t even bat an eye:
“Ah. The strangulation was the distraction. He picked your pocket with one of the other wires before he was incapacitated. He did that to Saint…someone-or-other, in Glasgow in the thirteenth century.” There’s nothing like getting taken with an old trick, I guess. But that meant that Namshiel had been working together with someone else— someone else who had to have been hanging around to collect the coins after he’d taken them from my pocket and tossed them off to the side in the confusion. Someone who hadn’t been pulling a fade after all. “Tessa and Rosanna,” I said quietly. “They got their collection of thugs back. They bailed at just the right moment to ruin your plan, too.” “Deceitful bitches,” Nicodemus murmured. “One of them is our own Judas; I was sure of it.”
Again, I’m not trying to argue this is special or anything, just that this is a dynamic I really-really enjoy. And I noticed today how I do add this a little whenever I write them. Maybe this is part of why I enjoy writing them so much because they can be super quick-witted and have ping-pong-style banter with each other :P
Anyway, this post has gotten a bit out of hand already lol We all have those niche topics we like to do meta-rants about, and could talk about for hours, don’t we? Obviously, this is mine.

April 20
1 Corinthians 15:20 Christ has indeed been raised from the dead.
Philippians 4:20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Psalm 42:5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
Philippians 4:13 I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me.
1 Chronicles 29:11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O LORD, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.
2 Corinthians 3:17 …and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
May the Lord give you all the territory He has promised you, as you move out in faithful obedience to His guidance and direction, to occupy and overcome by His strength and strategy, that you may have rest on every side, just as He has said, for not one of your spiritual enemies can withstand you when the Lord hands them over to you, because not one of all of the Lord's promises will fail, but will all be fulfilled. Joshua 22
May you be very careful to keep the commands and the ways of the Lord that you have been given: to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to obey His commands, to hold fast to Him and to serve Him with all your heart and all your soul. Joshua 22
May you understand that, though sin is immediately forgiven when repented of, others are affected and the lingering results must be walked out. Joshua 22
Remain alert, My child, and watch with the alertness of a sentry who knows the enemy is close. Watch with the confidence of one who knows the wiles and tricks of the enemy, and has been trained and equipped to recognize the attack and defeat it. Watch with the assurance that others are near and will come to your aid if numbers are overwhelming and you need to raise the alarm. But watch also your heart, My brave one, lest whispers from the dark distract you and turn your attention elsewhere, leaving a gap in the hedge of protection around the camp. Walk in the steadfast truth of My Word and the vigorous life of My Spirit, My vigilant one, ever practicing My Presence and acknowledging Me in prayerful conversation. Keep My armor in place with sword and shield at the ready, for the lusts of the carnal heart wage war against your soul just as the wickedness of spiritual darkness seeks to devour you in the spirit. Do not lose faith, My dear one, but know that I faced every attack that the enemy has when I walked the earth, and I defeated the foe thoroughly; therefore, when temptation comes, I can show you the weakness, the lie in what he says, the opening for the Sword of the Word to overcome and defeat the destruction the evil one wishes to cause in your life and the lives of those I have brought to you to love. I have come to save My people from their sins, be they past habits, present weaknesses, things constantly seen and heard, or secret, sudden and surprising temptations. Let not your heart be troubled, for I have overcome the world and conquered death, hell, and the grave. Walk alertly, My warrior, that you may walk in My victory as one who has overcome.
May you honestly answer the questions the Lord asks of you, for then you will know the answers to the questions you have for Him. Luke 20
May you recognize and respect the servants of your King so that you may receive with grace and honor the Son Whom the Father loves. Luke 20
May you accept in humility the authority of the Lord as the capstone, allowing your pride to be broken on Him, and rely in weakness on the support of the Lord as the keystone, allowing your self-sufficiency to be ground to a powder. Luke 20
May you sing of the Lord's great love forever and make known His faithfulness to all generations, for His love stands firm forever and His faithfulness is established in heaven itself. Psalm 89
May you declare the Lord's wonders in the immensity of the heavens and His faithfulness among the multitudes of His saints, for He is greatly feared in the council of the holy ones and is more awesome than all who are found around Him, the mighty One, Whose faithfulness surrounds Him. Psalm 89
May you gain the grace and compassion which comes from a good understanding of the deep things of God, for a person with good sense is respected and one with keen insight wins favor, but the harsh conduct of the unfaithful never changes and the treacherous lifestyle of the scorner leads to ruin in the pit of destruction. Proverbs 13:15

It is good for us to have trials and troubles at times, for they often remind us that we are on probation and ought not to hope in any worldly thing.
It is good for us sometimes to suffer contradiction, to be misjudged by men even though we do well and mean well.
These things help us to be humble and shield us from vainglory.
When to all outward appearances men give us no credit, when they do not think well of us, then we are more inclined to seek God Who sees our hearts.
Therefore,
a man ought to root himself so firmly in God that he will not need the consolations of men.
When a man of good will is afflicted, tempted, and tormented by evil thoughts, he realizes clearly that his greatest need is God, without Whom he can do no good.
Saddened by his miseries and sufferings,
he laments and prays.
He wearies of living longer and wishes for death that he might be dissolved and be with Christ.
Then he understands fully that perfect security and complete peace cannot be found on earth.
____________
So long as we live in this world we cannot escape suffering and temptation.
Whence it is written in Job:
"The life of man upon earth is a warfare."(1)
Everyone, therefore, must guard against temptation and must watch in prayer lest the devil, who never sleeps but goes about seeking whom he may devour, find occasion to deceive him.
No one is so perfect or so holy but he is sometimes tempted; man cannot be altogether free from temptation.
Yet temptations, though troublesome and severe, are often useful to a man, for in them he is humbled, purified, and instructed.
The saints all passed through many temptations and trials to profit by them, while those who could not resist became reprobate and fell away.
There is no state so holy, no place so secret that temptations and trials will not come.
Man is never safe from them as long as he lives, for they come from within us -- in sin we were born.
When one temptation or trial passes, another comes; we shall always have something to suffer because we have lost the state of original blessedness.
Many people try to escape temptations, only to fall more deeply.
We cannot conquer simply by fleeing, but by patience and true humility we become stronger than all our enemies.
The man who only shuns temptations outwardly and does not uproot them will make little progress; indeed they will quickly return, more violent than before.
Little by little, in patience and long-suffering you will overcome them, by the help of God rather than by severity and your own rash ways.
Often take counsel when tempted; and do not be harsh with others who are tempted, but console them as you yourself would wish to be consoled.
The beginning of all temptation lies in a wavering mind and little trust in God, for as a rudderless ship is driven hither and yon by waves, so a careless and irresolute man is tempted in many ways.
Fire tempers iron and temptation steels the just.
Often we do not know what we can stand, but temptation shows us what we are.
Above all, we must be especially alert against the beginnings of temptation, for the enemy is more easily conquered if he is refused admittance to the mind and is met beyond the threshold when he knocks.
Someone has said very aptly: "Resist the beginnings; remedies come too late, when by long delay the evil has gained strength."
First, a mere thought comes to mind, then strong imagination, followed by pleasure, evil delight, and consent.
Thus, because he is not resisted in the beginning, Satan gains full entry.
And the longer a man delays in resisting, so much the weaker does he become each day, while the strength of the enemy grows against him.
Some suffer great temptations in the beginning of their conversion, others toward the end, while some are troubled almost constantly throughout their life.
Others, again, are tempted but lightly according to the wisdom and justice of Divine Providence Who weighs the status and merit of each and prepares all for the salvation of His elect.
We should not despair, therefore, when we are tempted, but pray to God the more fervently that He may see fit to help us, for according to the word of Paul, He will make issue with temptation that we may be able to bear it.
Let us humble our souls under the hand of God in every trial and temptation for He will save and exalt the humble in spirit.
In temptations and trials the progress of a man is measured; in them opportunity for merit and virtue is made more manifest.
When a man is not troubled it is not hard for him to be fervent and devout, but if he bears up patiently in time of adversity, there is hope for great progress.
Some, guarded against great temptations, are frequently overcome by small ones in order that, humbled by their weakness in small trials, they may not presume on their own strength in great ones.
