I had a go at the Hunger Games simulator with the Classic Who companions and boy, this was certainly interesting.

Our poor tributes:

Right from the outset we’ve got two vicious kills from Leela. The others are wisely running away or working together to get supplies (my favorite is Dodo going for a mace until Ian takes it away.)

Day 1 saw a brutal betrayal by Susan, some accurately generated Ben/Polly, and Romana stealing from her future self.

I swear I'll actually say something of substance about this later, but there's this Short Trip called Balloon Debate that's basically an in-universe fanfic by Sarah Jane where all of the Doctor's televised companions (classic series) have to pick six of themselves to survive while all the others die. They all get a turn to say why they should live. It's batshit insane and I'm obsessed with it now.

Just for fun, anyone who sees this can guess who's chosen to live. The choices are Susan, Ian, Barbara, Vicki, Steven, Dodo, Ben, Polly, Jamie, Victoria, Zoe, Liz, Jo, Sarah Jane, Harry, Leela, Romana I, Romana II, Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Peri, Mel, and Ace.

one of the top ten things I miss about classic who that I wanna see more of in new who is companions from different eras and planets. we got susan the time lord, vicki from the 25th century, jamie from 18th century, victoria from the 19th century, leela from an unnamed planet, romana the time lord, adric from alzarius in an alternate universe, nyssa from traken… I could literally do this all day.

the closest we get to that in new who is jack harkness, madame vastra, jenny, strax, and river song, and none of them are full-time regularly-traveling-in-the-tardis companions, with the exception of jack harkness for a bit in season one. the only full time alien companion in new who is nardole (who is incredibly underrated! and still misses out on a few of the adventures during his season).

the doctor is a time traveller who goes everywhere in the universe, let’s spice this up! give me some alien companions or companions from different times in earth’s history! I wanna see it all!
