yeah, if 6 teenage girls and 1 teenage boy had emerged from the Canadian wilderness after 19 months with a 1 year old baby in tow, there would've been no escaping the media hellstorm. They would've been on 20/20 within 3 months. One group interview and a few candids of Shauna holding the baby would've been the price they'd all have had to pay in order to be left tf alone because while in 2023 society pretends to care about trauma, PTSD, and teens' mental health, this was the 90s--when Nicole Brown Simpson was blamed for her own murder, Lorena Bobbit was a late-night punchline, R. Kelly marrying 15 y/o Aalyiah was an open secret, grown men were calling into radio stations to speculate on 16 y/o Britney Spears' virginity, and Monica Lewinsky was doxxed and getting death threats for sucking off Bill Clinton.

What I'm saying is:

Seven teens (the girls + Travis) surviving against the odds for 19 months is the epilogue to a tragedy with enough unanswered questions to keep true crime nerds speculating & reporters digging.

But them being found with an infant? Had it come out that one of the girls was pregnant and gave birth during the ordeal? That's mainstream tabloid fodder. The kind that not even "papers of repute" would turn their noses up at. Barbara Walters, Lesley Stahl, and Mike Wallace would be beating each other and TMZ down to get the first interview, the first photo of the baby. NBC would've backed a U-Haul full of money onto the Shipman's, the Martinez', and the Sadecki's front yard (because speculation as to who the actual father really was would be kept going until it came directly from the source). Did she know she was pregnant when she got on the plane? Who else knew? What was it like giving birth? Did any of the other girls get pregnant? How many of the girls did Travis do it with? Weren't any of them afraid of the same thing happening to them? Did doing it help them cope?

And it wouldn't just be the media. Doctors, child development specialists, psychologists, sociologists, and academics would be calling non-stop to get Shauna and the baby to participate in clinical trials and studies.

The only way they'd have been left alone is if they'd done a televised interview and ended it by pleading to be allowed to go on with their lives in peace

THE JOHN MASSINGBERD MEMORIAL AWARD PRESENTED AT DRAG STRIP MEMORIES

Mount Hope, ONTARIO (April 14, 2024) – The John Massingberd Memorial Award has been presented by the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA) to a new, deserving individual, who represents the same commitment, dedication and passion that John Massingberd conveyed for the sport of auto racing. Massingberd, a long-time motorsports media personality, was instrumental in promoting Canadian motorsports until his passing in December of 2008, after a long and courageous battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This year’s award was presented on April 14, at the Drag Strip Memories show at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, Ontario to Erik Tomas. Erik caught the racing bug when his father took him to dirt tracks in the Niagara Region of Ontario, when he was seven years old and the sport has followed him everywhere since. While broadcasting news, sports and play-by-play hockey on Niagara radio stations CHSC, CKTB and CJRN in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, “ET” started announcing the racing action at Merrittville Speedway, Ransomville Speedway and Cayuga Speedway through the 1970s. In the 1980s, Erik brought his broadcasting talents to the Toronto market, broadcasting news and sports for 680 CFTR (now 680 News) and CKFM/Mix 99.9 (now Virgin Radio 99.9). He also had a stint as a play-by-play TV announcer for the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs on CHCH-TV and Global Television in the mid-1980s. Getting back to his auto racing roots while still working radio in Toronto, Erik took on the role of anchor, writer and co-producer for the Raceline Motorsport Television series on TSN, owned and produced by Bruce F. Mehlenbacher and the late John Massingberd’s Promark Motorsport International. Massingberd was inducted into the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame posthumously in 2022 and was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame posthumously in 2023. The Mehlenbacher family was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 1998, and Bruce F. Mehlenbacher was inducted into the Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2023. When the CART IndyCar Series came to the streets of Toronto, ET brought his track announcing experience to The Molson Indy from the first race in 1986, as track announcer. Erik’s auto racing passion turned into a full-time gig as anchor, producer, writer, and affiliate relations for the Raceline Radio Network, starting in 1992. Erik was Canada’s lone full-time auto racing broadcast journalist, and Raceline Radio remained Canada’s only nationally syndicated motorsport radio program until Erik retired from professional broadcasting in December 2023. He dedicated 48 years to sports broadcasting and 31 years to the Raceline Radio Network. The Network comprised affiliates in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Hamilton, and Niagara/Western New York State. Many affiliates aired Raceline Radio twice weekly, with an additional audience obtained through podcasts. Total weekly audiences exceeded 175,000 listeners. 2023 marked the 31st Anniversary of The Raceline Radio Network. During his career, Erik has interviewed some of the biggest and most influential stars in racing. This includes Mario Andretti, Shirley Muldowney, John Force, Don Garlits, Rick Mears, Bobby Rahal, Tom Carnegie, Nigel Mansell, Al Unser Jr., Dale Earnhardt, Kenny Bernstein and Bob Jenkins. Raceline Radio has won numerous international motorsport journalism awards, with Erik at the helm. Erik was a regular contributor to Inside Track Motorsport News. Erik Tomas was deservedly inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2020. The John Massingberd Award honours a national ambassador of Canadian motorsport in all disciplines, through his keen insight and entrepreneurial creativity. In the late 1980s, John co-established Promark Motorsport International, which included Raceline Motorsport Television and SnowTrax Television with Bruce Mehlenbacher, two media ventures responsible for bringing Canadian motorsport to a greater audience and well-deserved prominence. Along with coverage of drag racing, stock car racing, road racing, and tractor pulls with Promark Motorsport International and Raceline Television, he co-founded and co-anchored Raceline Radio in 1992. John was the executive producer of Canada’s first nationally syndicated motorsport radio program, the Raceline Radio Network, along with Erik Tomas. Raceline Radio was Canada’s first and only nationally syndicated motorsport radio program that celebrated 31 years on the air in 2023 as Canada’s National Radio Motorsport Authority. All who knew John quickly recognized his larger-than-life stature. With his warm, friendly but firm handshake, quick wit and genuine charm, John had a fantastic ability to never be at a loss for words. He pioneered his field, breaking new ground in radio and television coverage of Canadian motorsport. Virgin Media disclosed that a database containing the personal information of 900,000 individuals was left unsecured and accessible online for 10 months. The breach, primarily affecting Virgin customers with television or fixed-line telephone accounts, was not the result of a hack or criminal attack but occurred because the database was "incorrectly configured" by an employee who did not follow proper procedures. While the breach did not include passwords or financial data, it did contain phone numbers, home and email addresses.

The breach was detected by a security researcher at TurgenSec, prompting Virgin Media to shut down access immediately and inform the Information Commissioner's Office. The company is conducting a forensic investigation to determine the extent of unauthorised access and if any data was used.

Virgin Media intends to notify those affected about the risks of phishing, nuisance calls, and identity theft. The company emphasises the importance of not clicking on unknown links in emails and not providing personal information to unverified callers.

While this incident did not involve an active hack, it highlights the significance of securing customer data, especially as the exposed contact information can be exploited for phishing attempts. Virgin Media has expressed its apologies and is providing advice to affected individuals on its website.

What's the fascination with him that directors cannot resist the allure of reimagining his stories for the screen? Lotty specialises in creative storytelling by using a multitude of skills acquired over a career which spans many years in video creation & production. Lotty’s previous years of experience working across Television Production for the BBC has also helped push her creative production skills forward as Director at Shot Blast Media. Lotty is always looking for a new city or country to explore, taking in the scenery, enjoying the food and getting involved with the local arts and music, as well as spending quality time with her family. What is your favourite film? My favourite film is Shawshank Redemption. It’s a fantastic story. Very moving with compelling characters and sends out a message of hope. Well written, well acted and well filmed too. All round perfect movie in my eyes. What do you like about working in the video production industry? I hate this question! So lets put a spin on it, what’s the 1 desert island disc I would take… The Simpsons Season 5. The peak of the golden era! I’ve seen all these episodes countless times, the opening 5 episodes are all 10/10, it’s hard to find another 5 in a row this good. Homer’s Barbershop Quartet, Cape Feare, Homer Goes to College, Rosebud and the best, Treehouse of Horror IV, including the segment Terror at 5 and half feet, where a Gremlin attacks the school bus. This was the inspiration for a short film I made with a puppet and CGI Gremlin a few years ago called Turn Around When Possible, which had over 2 million views. Go check it out! This series also includes my favourite all time episode. Boy Scoutz ‘n the Hood. I could recite the entire script for you if you wanted. It’s just one hilarious gag after another. Homer is in fine form. GET ME 700 KRUSTY BURGERS! The Simpsons in general has always been one of my favourite things to watch (only season 3-9, that story is for a different day). Huge sense of nostalgia with every watch. Themes of family values mixed with a bit over the top mayhem with countless brilliant characters is just bliss. What do you like about working in the video production industry? Going to all sorts of places and meeting all sorts of people. Every week is different which keeps everyone on their toes. I’ve travelled to places far and wide across the UK, Europe and North America on projects. Places I would have never gone doing another job. Getting to use new equipment is always fun and finding ways to make each project better than the last. She graduated from the University of Leeds in 2021 with a degree in Film, Photography and Media, and her years of experience in the marketing industry means she is ideally focused on brand awareness and lead generation for the business. I would have to say that Madagascar is my favourite film. Madagascar 2 is a pretty close second though… It’s my go-to film on my birthday and it never fails to make me laugh. I also cannot wait to watch the stage musical of Madagascar soon…. Some may say that this is a kids film, however these people would be WRONG. What do you like about working in the video production industry? I have wanted to work in the video industry since I was in school, so it’s fantastic that I’ve been able to fulfil that dream. I absolutely love working in this industry. There is something different happening every week and I’ve learnt a whole bunch of new filmmaking skills since working at Shot Blast Media. Byron Sheldon , Camera Operator and Editor, joined Shot Blast Media after finishing his Bachelor’s degree in Filmmaking from Leeds Beckett University in 2022. Byron focuses on working on the company’s monthly video subscription service, in which he films and edits unique and memorable videos for a range of businesses across Yorkshire. What is your favourite film? Hot Fuzz holds a special place in my heart, and it’s no surprise why. I’m a massive fan of the dynamic duo, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Their comedic brilliance and on-screen chemistry have never failed to put a smile on my face! And let’s not forget the icing on the cake – Edgar Wright, the genius director behind this cinematic gem. Here’s a fun tidbit about me: When I was younger, I dreamt of joining the police force! And that’s precisely why “Hot Fuzz” resonates so deeply with me. It’s a perfect blend of thrilling action and hilarious comedy, all within the context of law enforcement. Watching the film brings back memories of my childhood aspiration and sparks a sense of adventure every time! What do you like about working in the video production industry?
