In Love and Friendship, you play as a young lady named Miss Merritt, a veteran of Regency society. The season--a period of year designated for arguably excessive social interaction and wasteful displays of wealth and status--is yours for the commanding. Decide how you want to spend the next few months among society’s richest, well-sculpted upper echelon. Though the outcome of the season may determine the rest of your life.
Miss (determinable first name) Merritt
A Young Lady
Miss Merritt is one and twenty years of age, embarking on her fifth season in town or London. Being a single child to two well-off parents, growing up in large and covetous property in the countryside, has afforded her the lifestyle to pursue those attributes considered nonnegotiable among respectable young women. And while the Merritt’s hold no title, they are highly regarded as one of the older, settled families in society.
This season holds particular merit as most young ladies are expected to be attached or actively engaged in searching for a life partner by their third season. Miss Merritt has let that aspect of herself languish in favor of cultivating her skills and experience. But the external pressures do not come alone. A cunning ploy orchestrated by one of the Merritt’s closest(in blood, not attitude) relations threatens to wrest control the Merritt estate unless the young lady can find herself a suitable match by the season’s end.
“What’s a lady to do?”
“why...follow her heart.”

Samantha Renolds
The Childhood Best-friend
Growing up only a half or so from mc’s home in Easton, Sam is Miss Merritt’s first and closest friend. The pair have been nearly inseparable since infancy, engaging in all sorts of mischief and fun as they’ve grown. Sam can be quiet and rather shy, which made her the perfect partner in crime. The pair got up to all sorts of mischief; sneaking away during events, playing the piano-forte in a crowded assembly room, sipping stolen brandy as teens, etc. Not without getting into trouble, of course. While Sam would eventually admit her involvement, most of the time, Miss Merritt took the fall for their shenanigans. The relationship deepened to the point, Sam held off her own debut a year to align with Miss Merritt’s. But the merry times ended rather suddenly with Mrs. Renold’s illness. The family was forced to leave England and seek treatment abroad. This season will be the first time in over five years that the two will have spoken as correspondence to the continent was spotty and Sam seemed to neglect all of Miss Merritt’s letters. There’s no telling what remains of their friendship after such a gap, if anything at all.
Despite only being a year older than Miss Merritt, Sam stands nearly a head taller than her friend. Although her golden waves draw more attention from others than her height. If one were to peer even closer, they’d be struck by the openness of her light-brown eyes and the fullness of her smile.
Lord Warren Hind
The Roguish Rake
Very few can fascinate and repulse in such equal measure as London’s most infamous, Lord Warren Hind. A second son, no one actually expected Warren to ever hold the title. But the mysterious and sudden death of his elder brother a few years prior has shaken the order of things, leaving behind a solemn widow and infant. Before taking his brother’s position, Warren was known as unashamed flirt, a man for whom all pleasures, carnality included, were welcomed with reckless abandon. Rumors range from his deflowering of several fresh-faced debutantes to swindling thousands of pounds from London’s seediest gambling parlor. Though even the most stanchest of his detractors admit the Lord as been quiet, almost sullen, as of late. To the dismay of wagging tongues, Lord Hind may be better behaved than his reputation claims.
Wicked green eyes, that accounts for much of the speculation surrounding Warren. But it’s rather unfair to the rest of his equally attractive features, his causally tousled brown locks, his slightly athletic tanned build, his vulpine smile. But with baggage like that, who wouldn’t abandon Regency-sanctioned good sense and take a second look.
Vivian Fortescue
The Jaded Widow
Vivian’s story is harder to tell. While many in society know her, her family, her husbands(oh yes, plural!) for many years, no one can claim a particular closeness to the thrice-now widow. The charitable bleeding-hearts pity her; to marry and settle down, only to lose it all, again and again. The petty and envious whisper conspiracy and concoct extreme theories, blackmail, murder, and affairs. Everything and anything outlandish enough to erase her unfortunate tragedy. Although one does wonder...three husbands dead in succession. Three very rich, very influential husbands dead. Vivian, for her part, seems indifferent to society’s speculation and grieves, well, maybe a little too much. Since the death of her third and final husband two years ago, Vivian has worn nothing but mourning colors. More ammunition for the charitable and the petty to pick apart. As for the lady herself, no one is close enough to know the truth.
No one in court has the gumption to get close enough to look Mrs. Fortescue in the eye, to peer beneath the black of her lace mourning veil. But if one was brave, one might note the slight curve of her mouth, the sharpness of her dark--near black eyes, the strength behind her stature, the gravity of her voice. But, of course, society only has their eyes on her dress, her black wardrobe colored only by the deepest shades of purple, red, and green.
Hugh Langley (Platonic Friendship Interest)
The Red Herring Dandy
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. Hugh Langley is not. Not in a way that matters, but that won’t stop the hoards of mothers springing their daughters upon him. His income, his family history, his address, all up for public discussion, it seems. The Langleys did not come into their riches through exploitation of tenant farmers but rather through...trade. A horrid concept to the more traditional heads in Regency. But it was Hugh’s grandfather that did the hard labor of building the family business. All Hugh has to worry about is picking which shade of maroon his cravat should be, that and making sure his income doesn’t disappear with neglect. Now he wants to get through the season without entangling himself with someone he cannot stand, and maybe have some fun, if he can find a moment of peace.
A stranger might describe Hugh as a not-so young man in his early-thirties with dark brown skin, effortlessly braided black hair, and striking blue eyes. But a friend could tell you about his obsession with red-colored clothes, or the small scar on his upper lip he hides with his facial hair, or how his cane is more than just a fashion statement.

"A POCKETFUL OF RYE" (1985) Review
Tumblr media
"A POCKETFUL OF RYE" (1985) Review There have been two adaptation of Agatha Christie's 1953 novel, "A Pocket Full of Rye". Well . . . as far as I know. I have already seen the recent adaptation that aired on ITV's "AGATHA CHRISTIE'S MARPLE" series in 2009. Recently, I watched an earlier adaptation that aired on the BBC "MISS MARPLE" series in 1985.
Directed by Guy Slater, this earlier adaptation starred Joan Hickson as the story's main sleuth, Miss Jane Marple. The story begins in the London office of financier Rex Fortescue, who suddenly dies after drinking his morning tea. At first suspicion falls upon the employees of Fortescue's firm. But the police coroner discovers that Fortescue had died from taxine, n alkaloid poison obtained from the leaves or berries of the yew tree. Due to this discovery, Detective-Inspector Neele realizes that someone within the Foretescue household may have poisoned the financier during breakfast. Suspicion falls upon Fortescue's second and much younger wife, Adele after Neele learns of her affair with a local golf pro at a resort. However, Adele is murdered during tea, via poison. Even worse, a third victim, a maid named Gladys Martin, is found in the garden, strangled to death and with a peg on her nose. After Adele and Gladys' murders are reported by the media; Miss Marple, who used to be Gladys' employer, pays a visit to the Fortescue home to discover the murderer's identity among the list of suspects: *Percival Fortescue - Rex's older son, who was worried over the financier's erratic handling of the family business *Jennifer Fortescue - Percival's wife, who disliked her father-in-law *Lance Fortescue - Rex's younger son, a former embezzler who had arrived home from overseas on the day of Adele and Gladys' murders *Patricia Fortescue - Lance's aristocratic wife, who had been unlucky with her past two husbands *Mary Dove - the Fortescues' efficient and mysterious housekeeper *Vivian Dubois - Adele's lover and professional golf instructor *Aunt Effie Ramsbottom - Rex's fanatically religious ex-sister-in-law Despite Inspector Neele's initial inclination to dismiss the elderly Miss Marple, he comes to appreciate her help in solving the three murders. I like "A POCKETFUL OF RYE". I like it a lot. I have always been a fan of Christie's 1953 novel. And if I must be honest, I also enjoyed the 2009 adaptation, as well. Originally, one would be inclined to believe that this earlier adaptation is more faithful to Christie's novel. Surprisingly, it is not. Screenwriter T.R. Bowen eliminated at least three characters from the novel and changed the murderer's fate in the end. Otherwise, this adaptation was pretty faithful. But it is not its faithfulness to Christie's novel that made me enjoy this production. I have read plenty of first-rate novels that translated badly to the television or movie screen. Fortunately, "A POCKETFUL OF RYE" does not suffer from this fate. At least not too much. Overall, "A POCKETFUL OF RYE" is an entertaining and solid story that left me intrigued. It is also one of the few Christie stories in which the revelation of the murderer's identity left me feeling very surprised . . . and a little sad. However, even sadder was the third murder . . . that of Gladys Martin. She was the only one of the three victims that was likable. Not only did I find her death sad, but also cruel. But it was also good drama. The movie also featured some strong characterization that I believe enhanced the story. Between the interactions between the members of the Fortescue family members, the interactions between Miss Marple and Inspector Neele, and the interaction between the latter and his assistant Sergeant Hay; this production reeked with strong characterization. "A POCKETFUL OF RYE" did have its problems. One, I thought the movie's pacing dragged a bit, following the death of Rex Fortescue. And because of this, the story took its time in reaching Miss Marple's arrival at the Fortescues' home. Another problem with Bowen's script is that it strongly hinted the killer's identity before Miss Marple could to the police. This problem has been a problem with the Joan Hickson movies throughout its run. For me, the real problem with "A POCKETFUL OF RYE" proved to be the killer's fate. Apparently, Bowen and director Guy Slater decided that Christie's version of what happened to the murderer was not enough. Instead, they decided to kill off the murderer in a convoluted manner via a traffic accident. Frankly, I found Christie's original version more emotionally satisfying. I certainly had no problem with the movie's performances. Joan Hickson was top-notch as usual, as Jane Marple. I also enjoyed Tom Wilkinson's very entertaining performance as Inspector Neele. I find it hard to believe that it took another 13 years or so for him to achieve stardom. There were three other performances that I truly enjoyed. One came from Rachel Bell, who was first-rate in her portrayal the victim's enigmatic daughter-in-law. Selina Cadell's portrayal of housekeeper Mary Dove proved to be just as enigmatic and impressive. Both Peter Davison and Clive Merrison gave interesting performances as the two Fortescue brothers, Lance and Percival, who seemed such complete opposites of one another. I also enjoyed Fabia Drake, who gave an excellent performance as the victim's religious, yet observant sister-in-law, Effie Ramsbottom. The movie also featured solid performances from Timothy West (whose appearance was sadly too brief), Annette Badland, Stacy Dorning, Jon Glover, Frances Low and Martyn Stanbridge. "A POCKETFUL OF RYE" proved to be an entertaining and solid adaptation of Christie's novel, thanks to director Guy Slater and screenwriter T.R. Bowen. The movie also featured excellent performances from a cast led by the always incomparable Joan Hickson. However, I do feel that the movie was somewhat marred by a slow pacing in the middle of the story and an early and unsatisfying revelation of the killer's identity. Oh well. At least "A POCKETFUL OF RYE" was not a bust or even mediocre.

Maybe life isn’t easier with magic, but it’s the life you wanted, the life you wished on every shooting star for after your brother got his letter. For the whats wrong with my character meme, 1-3 for Sam and Viv? If you feel like it^^
1. a trait they have too much of  (ex. too much pride = arrogance)
Sam: Seriousness? making her look too stoic to strangers
Vivian: Pride(stealing becuz it fits too good) make her look too arrogant
2. a trait they don’t have enough of (ex. too little pride = insecurity)
Sam: initiative, making her look like she has no agency of her own
Vivian: patience, making her look fickle with her emotions and interests
3. a trait they express in the wrong way
Sam: Devotion; Sam is devoted to those she cares about but she can never get herself to express it too explicitly, especially verbally. She shows her care in her actions, her attention to details, remembering the little things others forget.
Vivian: Confidence; Vivian has built herself back up from nothing and it shows in the way she carries herself as if the floor isn’t good enough to support her. Her self-confidence is considered a vice by regency standards as she refuses to be subtle about how much she unapologetically loves herself.

Hey! I love your writing, if you're still doing prompts! “I have had rather more callers than I expected.”
Thank you for the lovely prompt! I'm sorry about the wait! I decided to do Hugh and Vivian for this one! I had so much fun, really got me going for chapter one's scenes^^
You were content to wait, perfectly so. Especially after the kind attention, Mr. Langely and members of his staff paid you amidst the rather large crowd of women that were occupying his sitting room.
You managed to find an unoccupied study adjacent to the space and waited them out. His collection of books surprised you. There were a breadth of works from socio-economic theory to children's fantasy, and you found yourself completely absorbed in the pursual of his shelves.
Eventually, the chatter from the sitting room dulled away into a fresh bit of silence, the kind that only illuminated the level of noise that had vacated. Just how many people were seeking the poor man's company today? Although you were here for exactly the same purpose.
The door to the study opens and in walks, Ms. Fortescue.
She gives you a wide grin, just as surprised to see you. "Waiting on Hugh, are we little lamb?"
"Perhaps? Were you part of that group?"
Her smile grows silly before she replies, "you mean that stampede that ravaged poor Hugh's sitting room, I'm afraid not."
She walks closer, the sunlight revealing the subtle dark green of her dress. You involuntarily suck a breath in as she stops right in front of you, no humor or harshness in her face. She looked strangely vulnerable.
"Wait with me?" the words come out softly and the veil flutters with them. You try not to pay attention to the way the setting sun illuminated her silhouette, creating a pale gray halo around her head.
But the softness steals your footing and you don't quite trust yourself with words. So, you nod.
And she smiles wide and bright again. It's hard to say which is brighter, her or the orange sky.
Her attention mercifully turns to the book in your hand, she gently rests a hand on the cover and you hand it to her.
"Poetry? Oh, romantic poetry at that--Hugh's been holding out on us."
"Vivian!" You chide her, mostly in jest, but the widow laughs anyway.
The door to the study opens once more and the gentleman in question makes his appearance. Entertaining, as Ms. Fortescue put it, "a stampede" looks to have nearly exhausted the poor man.
He runs a hand through his beard, taming some unruly sections that had their own plans. His jacket is draped over one shoulder and he is wearing a simple pale pink vest over a white shirt, looking rather young despite the tiredness in his eyes.
"I have had rather more callers than I expected," he admits with a sheepish smile, coming into the study and plopping down on the nearest seatee.
Vivian is ready with a response, "I hadn't pegged you as one for understatements. I wouldn't be surprised if every eligible young lady and her mother in town were filling your parlor this afternoon."
He grimaces but offers her snark nothing more than a shrug.
"If you wish, we can come back another day?" you wring your hands in the front of your dress, giving Vivian a pointed look.
"Very well, lamb," She laughs, giving your shoulder a quick squeeze, before looking to Hugh, "she is right. Much better for you to rest than bore us."
Rather than frown, he seems to fight with a smile, conceding to it soon enough. "While I loathe to disappoint either of you, I would not wish you from my company. After that...that--"
"--group of wildebeests?"
"--Crowd," his smile grows wider. "I would love nothing more than to spend some time with my friends."
"Finally," Vivian wastes no time in taking a seat on the opposite sofa, draping a long arm along on the top. "We have so much to catch up on."
They both turn to look at you expectantly and for a moment, you're struck by your fortune to have found people in town who actually cared for you. The open warmth in Vivian's gaze and the kind-hearted gentleness in Hugh's felt more than you deserved. So, you joined them and resolved to love them as dearly as you could anyone.
