A Sleepwalker On This Mortal Shore/A Sleepwalker Gazing on Nirvana, by Hello Tanita-san/Tatsuya Kitani. (Self-cover)
Fun fact, the animation for this one was made by Mana Inoue, same person who did the PV for Weakness, How To Be in Love With You and Bring it On! You can definitely see the similarities with the first two, with the use of photographs 'glued' to 2D drawings. This one pushes the body horror a fair bit further, though. Be prepared for writhing brains made of realistic human fingers and such. (Also, the vocaloid version's CC subs has a mistake at 2:23)

On An Empty Morning by kemu (Utaite ver.) (Translation)
I really like this song because the tone changes a lot depending on your interpretation. Does the calm tune represent the singer at long last achieving peace after terrible pain, leading a life that's mundane and sometimes difficult but ultimately worthwhile? Or have they just sunk into apathy, emotionlessly sacrificing other people just to continue their empty lifestyle, having so little concept of happiness that they actually think they're fulfilled by this?
Both options are pretty interesting. And well, in the context of Mikoto's crime, "I take someone’s fleeting future and use it as a stepping stone" takes on a new meaning.

The EMA cover isn't official or anything, but it's my favorite version so I'm gonna link it too. The original does have the advantage of having Mikoto Meika singing it, though.
It's kind of interesting how different the illustrations for the original and the cover feel: in the original we see the boy smiling desperately wide as he faces towards the shore, like he's reassuring somebody watching. Meanwhile in the cover he looks indifferent or perhaps annoyed, but for the last chorus he turns around fully and splashes around as if inviting you to follow him.

Most people would probably think of this one as a Fuuta or Muu song, and I do agree (more Muu than Fuuta imo). But honestly, while Mikoto would never start a bullying campaign, I can totally see him as a bystander, the kind of person who insist that everyone should just talk it out and then everything will be fine. Of course, we still don't know what caused his murder, only that apparently being kidnapped was an improvement. So you could also view him as the victim, which gives new meaning to those weird lines in the middle of the song that really don't sound like they're from the same person as the rest...
But mostly, I added this song for the "shadows lurking under the light/denial" angle, which is theme for the last section of the playlist. I don't really know enough about music to sort it by genre/sound similarities, so I organized it by themes! Or at least I tried to put similar songs together so they'd "flow" into each other.

You haven’t seen your boyfriend for quite a while, and since you both had a day off from work, you decided to meet in town at your favorite burger restaurant. Gaku was the first to arrive and asked for a table for two, immediately ordering two of your favorite burgers and some extras such as onion rings and fries with two sauces.
He also asked for a pot of iced tea, and with thanks to the waiter, you entered the large restaurant wearing a cute white sweater, a light blue tennis skirt, a long coat, and high heels. You had your favorite purse over your shoulder and your phone in your hand. You quickly looked at your boyfriend who, enchanted by the sight of you, smiled at you.
You greeted the staff and headed to your table while taking your coat off your shoulders; your boyfriend got up from the chair, helping you undress. In the meantime, you greeted with one more smile and also a long kiss straight on the lips. A few seconds later, the blonde haired man pulled your chair over so you could sit comfortably at the table.
“Sorry, I’m late, there’s a lot of traffic all over the city and there was an accident at a roundabout.” You said and your boyfriend just shook his head.
“It’s nothing, the most important thing is that you’re okay and you got here safely, baby.” He said almost immediately, looking closely at your neck and hands. “I ordered us food, so don’t worry about anything. Better tell me if you’re okay at work.” He changed the subject to another and you giggled.
“Well...”

The dinner you ate was delicious and filling. After all, you also ordered hot drinks, as well as meringues to sweeten the day; in addition, your boyfriend changed his previous seat. This time he sat next to you on the soft couch, one arm wrapped around you. You continued to talk about various topics, while enjoying delicious sweets.
“Would you like to come to my place tonight, kitten? Shall we watch something and spend more time together?” He asked in a calm voice, placing his hand on your knee, and you agreed.

There's this Vocaloid song "Blessed Messiah and the Tower of Ai" and I thought what if the characters were from K? Which would be better as the messiah: Shiro or Anna? And in what order would the characters "betray" the messiah? Like, depending on what happens, Shiro or Anna would probably realize something is up and wonder if the others are doing this for a reason.
Somehow I immediately thought of this as like all the Kings and Anna as the 'Messiah' character, with all the others trying to keep a secret from her what's happening but she really suspects all along. Like instead of the children maybe it's eight people: Shiro, Kokujouji, Mikoto, Munakata, Hisui, Iwafune, Ichigen and Anna. Anna, the youngest child in the 'Village of Kings' receives the letter that she will be the next 'Messiah' and must travel to the tower to receive the seven blessings and light the altar. The others offer to accompany her, feeling like she might have difficulty alone being so young and because they've all looked over her since she was a child. One of the members of the village though, Munakata, finds this whole talk of an altar and blessings to be odd, and so he goes to the town library and does some research. Mikoto joins him there later and wonders what Munakata's so worried about, Munakata asks what Mikoto would do if those 'blessings' were not in fact blessings at all, how far would he go to protect Anna. Mikoto thinks that's a stupid thing to ask, getting up and walking away as Munakata stares thoughtfully after him.
The next day they all set off on a journey to the Tower. At first things are fine, everyone is in good spirits and Anna feels like she will truly be able to claim all the blessings and become the Messiah. As she reaches the room of the first blessing though Mikoto tells him to step back, moving ahead of her and reaching for the blessing himself. Anna's eyes widen as she says Mikoto's name and he shrugs as the stone door starts to close, saying he thought about it and this blessing, it really doesn't suit Anna after all. Anna finds himself falling to her knees in shock, not understanding how the one who was always closest to her could do this. Munakata's voice cuts through the silence as he says that was reckless of Suoh, to grab the blessing first. He says perhaps Anna should make her way to the altar and let the rest of them have some of this great blessing, Anna's eyes widen as Munakata walks past her towards the next room. He looks at each of the other Kings before deliberately taking the blessing, and the door closes.
Ichigen and Iwafune are next, Iwafune saying that he can't let some brats get ahead of him and Ichigen agreeing, composing a haiku as he takes his own blessing. Hisui goes next, claiming he needs this blessing for a new world. Shiro tries to take the next one but Kokujouji gets ahead of him, saying Shiro has more things to do than take blessings right. Anna is still upset and unsure how to proceed and Shiro helps her to her feet, promising to help her with the final blessing. As they walk Shiro quietly says she must be upset and Anna shakes her head – Mikoto wouldn't do something to hurt her, so there must be more to this. Shiro is surprised by her faith and she looks at him quietly as she says he's going to take the final blessing, isn't he. Shiro's surprised and then he's just like 'you got me, huh.' Anna asks why and Shiro puts a hand on her head and says it's for the best, and she can be Messiah without something as needless as a blessing. As they approach the next room Shiro waves goodbye and steps ahead of her, the door shutting behind him. Anna decides to continue ahead to the altar and when she gets there she finally sees it, the statues with candles in their hands, and realizes the truth – those were 'sorrows,' not blessings, and the others all took on the curses that she would have had to suffer if she'd come alone. Silently she kneels before the altar and lights it, thanking the ones who got her this far as flame wings appear on her back.

Marvin is a magician-in-disguise residing in a town near London, doing his wizardry business like usual. His major goal at this moment was to solve the mystery of ALTR 114209 that breached from the facility of IRIS. One day, he got robbed by a stranger in a hoodie, stealing his lunch for the day. He was trying to catch the thief from going scot-free by making a portal that teleports to their location. However, instead of teleporting to the suspect, he got... Isekai'd?
Marvin found himself lost in a bustling city of Shibuya, where locals and tourists go for all things gacha and anime. Considering he is a long-time fan of Vocaloids, he even finds this moment a dream. "I never thought I can just go here, I'm still a newbie at magic!" He exclaimed ecstatically, even jumping in excitement.
However, doing so made him notice the weight behind his back. He turned around and saw... "WHAT? I HAVE A TAIL? WHAT IS THIS?!" Panicking in confusion, he went to check his body to see what went missing from his inventory. Thankfully, none got taken away from him, apart from his food. He tries to take the hood on but noticed somethings on his head. He massages it and immediately feel ticklish from the sensation. "Ow! What the... CAT EARS??!"
He looks around to see what else is wrong in "Japan", and noticed that some people are otherkins, some look like part-monsters, and saw some letters in the neon lights to be not Japanese, but rather a script he is very familiar of; Elvish. Turns out, the place he warped to is not human. From how strange the place is, with him becoming a cat-human hybrid upon arrival, he realized he is sent in an alternate version of Earth.

That day, you and your boyfriend, Haru, drove his car to the mall to pick out some new things for your apartment. You’ve been living together for over two years and from time to time you did some major shopping to fill up the shortages in cabinets, dishes, kitchen accessories, bath towels, candles or plants. Thanks to the free Saturday, you could afford to walk between the shops and aisles for several hours, and you were really happy to spend time with your long-term partner.
“...Can I buy this?” You showed a cloud-soft, light beige blanket with little penguins on it and wicker hats on their heads. Haru looked at you with a raised eyebrow and amusement in his eyes. “Please... I’m begging you...”
“Do you really need this?”
“Honey, it’s got penguins on it... With yellow hats...” You looked at him with a sad face, hugging the blanket tighter to your shoulders, and he sighed amused. “Can I...?” You said much more cheerfully and he just nodded. “Yay!”
The tall man adjusted his glasses on his nose, and then he and you headed to the cash register to buy the aforementioned blanket.

Loaded to the top of your head with bags full of smaller and larger trinkets to your house, you walked slowly towards the elevator that would take you to the underground parking lot. That’s where your car was parked, which would take you home (and maybe for a short while to KFC for your favorite shake or to McDonald’s for a big cup of ice cream with extra topping).
By the time you got to the silver elevator, Haru stopped halfway right next to a nice jewelry store. You also stopped a step in front of him and then giggled.
“But you recently bought yourself a watch, why did you stop?” You asked amused, adjusting the big black bag on your shoulder, and the man just grabbed your hand and led you inside the spacious room. One of the smartly dressed shop assistants greeted the two of you with her best smile, then introduced herself.
“Good afternoon! What can I help you, ma’am and sir?” She looked first at you and then at your boyfriend, and Haru only responded with a slight bow.
“Could you show my partner the prettiest engagement rings with a nice looking stone? To match their eyes.” He asked honestly and you looked at him surprised. First you frowned, then glanced at the employee, who only nodded in satisfaction, and then moved forward, saying something to your boyfriend. At the very end, you glanced at the blonde haired man again, and he just winked at you, amused by the situation.
You felt bags of groceries, clothes, and a blanket fall out of your hands one by one, and then you felt a strong grip on your waist as well.
“Honey, are you okay? Go with the lady and look around. Unless you don’t want to...”
Haru was amused, you almost fainted, and it’s all because of the ring you’ve been waiting for so long and thought you’d never get on your finger!

Achievement Date: 10-05-24, Upload Date: 08-08-25
Absolute classic of a duo, perfectly portrays the dramatic progression with electronic vibes that dominates 2000’s anime and in turn VOCALOID songs. The lyrics are dramatic as the song, it’s about a girl falling in love with a prince who she was supposed to assassinate, prime romance light novel fodder there, and the melody also perfectly complements the vibe. There are many songs from this early era that goes hard, but I don’t think there is any song that goes hard so elegantly as this song.

Song so lewd that the original producer has asked to not cover this song. It’s a song full of sexual cliche, written in a whimsical way along with somewhat punk rock style instrumentation makes the song a bit exciting, even though the tuning is god-awful, and it sometimes falls into the early VOCALOID tropes that makes the song dated. It’s probably a rite of passage, and note there are much more lewd songs on this list.
#39 - World’s End Dancehall (wowaka) [Hatsune Miku, Megurine Luka]

One of Mythical songs, which quickly rose after the producer’s untimely passing. The only duet from wowaka, a traditional Miku, Luka duet. While the verse sounds like any other wowaka songs, the chorus feels more traditional rock, which makes the song a bit less frantic than his other songs. The lyrics remind me of more dour 90’s rock songs that reference the ennui and malaise of that time. Honestly, not the wowaka song that I remember most fondly, so the review is a bit short for a Mythic song. Sorry!
#40 - Paradichlorobenzene (OwataP) [Kagamine Len]

The slow and moody intro betrays the nature of this song, which is actually a fast latin beat song, although it does set the lyrical mood of a delinquent who runs away from his home and criticism of internet bullying, from what I remember. There is a bit of simpleness to the song, but as the producer told us, this feels intentional. The repeat of the chemical in the name feels like a mantra from a child suffering from neglect. In that sense, the song correctly captures the feeling of an aggrieved teenager.
#41 - Rolling Girl (wowaka) [Hatsune Miku]

Every wowaka is a milestone on its own, but this one feels extra-special. Just from the opening notes, you know this is something that needs to be preserved in stone. Unlike the unique nature of most wowaka songs, the song seems to be in line with song from kz and ryo, but with the harder style of wowaka and the fast but steady beat. And of course the lyrics are your typical wowaka fare of young people struggling, which is why the songs are still so beloved today. Unlike the first person perspective of most of his songs, this is in third-person which adds to that unique and timelessness. Although the lyrics aren’t as fast as his other songs, the breaks are lot shorter so the song turns out be a lot shorter than you remembered, which makes you long for more.
#42 - PoPiPo (LamazeP) [Hatsune Miku]

It’s a shame that not more of his songs are in this list. Definitely somewhat of a parody of those ridiculously addictive CM songs, so of course it’s also ridiculously addictive. The ‘product’ Miku sells is vegetable juice (Vegetable juice has an odd way of making very odd songs) and she sells it very charmingly. Lazame’s tuning is artificial but in a charming way that signifies Miku as a character, the way most people initially conceptualize Miku as… and with the praise above, that’s not a bad thing. There are plenty of ideas to pick from using Miku as more of an icon than a singer.
#43 - Butterfly on Your Right Shoulder (Nori-P) [Kagamine Rin]

The original Rin version. Although the lyrics and melody are the same, there is still a lot of difference that makes the song feel quite different. This version seems a bit stripped down if you are familiar with the version below. I do think Rin is better used here as a singing voice, though. More thoughts in the Len version below.
#44 - Stardust Utopia (otetsu) [Megurine Luka]

Probably oft-forgotten early Luka hits. Otetsu is one of the under-remembered early VOCALOID-Ps, and while their songs doesn’t feel as revolutionary as some of the songs on this list, I think the song still evokes that ‘00s indie band feels, which never truly a bad things, if I want to be honest with my taste.
#45 - Butterfly on Your Right Shoulder (Nori-P) [Kagamine Len]

If you think some of the lyrics of this era were chunni, I think this song is almost hilariously melodramatic. But what you remember is the louder and more punchy rendition of the song. Just some extra beats and the song unfolds its ‘twerkability’ potential, as famously judged by NijiEN. I just love how this version just takes the little tweaks in the Rin version and just goes all out with it.
#46 - 1925 (T-POCKET) [Hatsune Miku]

Song is about a train driver whiting their day away in daydreams, which seems very applicable to me. Although the PV and the title is a reference to the Daisho era, the song has very little to do with the era, or at least I don’t really know the references. It’s a nice little ditty, but I honestly don’t see the appeal, although I am at the end of the day’s list so it might be that I’m more tired than anything. Oh well. It’s nice.
#47 - Mozaik Role (DECO*27) [GUMI]
Achievement Date: 10-08-10, Upload Date: 10-07-15
One of the more iconic openings of a VOCALOID song. A very important song, as this is GUMI’s first Legend song and DECO*27’s first as well. Of course, this song eventually reached Mythic status. I do think for someone who follows and re-sets the trends, his lyrics are more on the thoughtful side, along with MikitoP. There is a lot going on here, and of course this is a sequel to a song that will be later on this list. As for GUMI, DECO*27’s GUMI might be one of the more soft versions out there, which gives this song much more of an ethereal and contemplative feel even with the rocking beat.
