A Friend in the Flame - Walden & Walburga

It had been more than 24 hours since Walburga had walked out of Number 12. She had cried for so long. Only Regulus had been to visit her so far and that was so she could tell him it was not his fault. She had been in tears since walking through the door, only managing to be strong for her son while he visited. It had been hard to breathe since he had said those words. Since Orion confessed to his affair. It felt as if she was collapsing inwards, like her lungs didn’t work right anymore. She was alone and unwanted. Walburga had yet to make it to her bedroom. She was too tired to allow herself that comfort, the nightmares which had always haunted her had resurfaced with a vengeance. Somehow sleeping with Orion, her head on his chest, listening to his heart while he played with her hair, had always managed to help her sleep. She choked on a sob burying her face in a pillow, it had all been a lie. Her entire life had been a lie. All except for what Pollux had told her all those years ago. You’re worthless, no one could ever love you. You’ll always be a second choice.... He had been right all those years ago. She was a second choice to the love of her life. He’d proven it to her time and time again. Walden had been warning her for years, trying to help her to see. Walden was who helped her to raise her kids when Orion was drunk and absent. Walden who consoled her when she found one of Orion’s shirts with lipstick stains after having not seen him for days.

He was who she had sent her first owl to. He was her best friend and she needed the calm of his presence. Walden always seemed to have the answers and although he was younger than she, there had been many times where he felt like he was an older brother giving her advice. She asked him to come over today so she had time to think and talk to Reg and although she needed the time, she also wish he had come sooner, but that was not his way, he would not intrude if she had given him a time to arrive. The clock finally reached 11:00 and Walburga breathed out a sigh of relief as she heard the knock on the door. She opened the door and found her best friend in front of her. She pulled him in and locked the door before throwing her arms around his neck as she sobbed on his shoulder. “I did it, Wallie.” She cried. “He told me. He told me he cheated again. I did some dumb things... but now I left. I walked away. Why does it hurt so bad?” She asked her voice unsteady and choked with the sadness she felt.

Poseidon: Are you a moody person?

August 10th

Forced to mourn the loss of Antonin Dolohov, it is a grim night when the Death Eaters are called together. Under the instructions of the Dark Lord, Rodolphus Lestrange tortures Augustus Rookwood and Cygnus Black with the Cruciatus Curse for their failure to protect the Daily Prophet Headquarters.

August 16th 

Dressed in black, many members of the pureblood community gather to pay their respects to Antonin Dolohov and his family. The Death Eaters sit among them, most uncharacteristically solemn. 

At the end of the event, Aidan Avery confronts Augustus Rookwood about the night of Antonin’s death. Just when it seems as though they are ready to raise their wands, Cassius Mulciber appears to stop the duel before it can begin. 

August 20th

A meeting is called by the Dark Lord to exchange ideas about how to handle the lingering threat that Cassandra Burke poses. When the Dark Lord discovers through the use of legiilimency that Walden Macnair has been keeping her hostage without telling him, he once again orders Rodolphus Lestrange to torture a fellow comrade. 

As plans to use the woman to their advantage begin formulating, Alecto Carrow and Narcissa Malfoy suggest her release back to the public under the Imperious Curse. They are assigned the task of watching over Cassandra and Walden to ensure that the plan is executed properly. 

August 22nd

The Death Eaters meet to discuss the disappearance of Emma Vanity, with the Dark Lord forbidding the formation of search parties. He urges his followers to allow the public to search for the well-known Quidditch player, insisting that anything done to her will only worsen Aversio’s image and further their own.

After the meeting, Bellatrix Lestrange and Cygnus Black talk briefly about the Dark Lord’s decision, exchanging blasphemous and dangerous remarks. Unbeknownst to them, Rita Skeeter overhears their plans for revenge and intends to use the information to gain the favor of their leader herself. 

August 23rd 

Rita Skeeter discloses the plans of Bellatrix Lestrange and Cygnus Black to the Dark Lord. He allows the two to carry through with their kidnapping, but afterwards instructs that Edgar Bones be temporarily held at Malfoy Manor under the watch of Narcissa Malfoy until they can find a use for him.

August 22, 1979 The MacNair estate @heis-waldenmacnair

Bellatrix and emotions were never a healthy mix. While most seemed to either feel them or suppress them, the eldest of the Black children felt each one like a natural disaster waiting to happen. Pain was a tsunami, wrecking her and leaving more destruction in its path. Whereas anger burned hot and bright and volatile, leaving nobody untouched. It torched everything and in its wake remained only ash. For a number of reasons, it was almost ironic that Aversio had stolen such a tactic. She knew without doubt that it was them that had burnt the Prophet and dismembered Antonin in the process. The Order was full of too many pussies to do it themselves, and were too fixated on their high horses to even consider the thought. That left only one contender, and when she found out who, she would see to it they were dealt with.

More than that, Aversio had taken it upon themselves to take Emma Vanity. If it was public scandal they were looking for they had damn well gotten it, taking someone so high profile, with such a big bounty hanging over her safe return. Having a Death Eater vanish was one thing; Bella had more positive feelings for the young Seeker than she did for most. Emma was a woman, one that had proved more than once that she had a place among the men--  call it personal experience bias or whatever the fuck else, Bellatrix had a soft spot for that alone. Aversio had, once again, stepped over a line. And then the dam holding back all the festering rage had burst forth, the deep desire for vengeance overtaking everything else. 

She invited herself into the grounds of Walden’s home without pausing to even consider differently. If there was anyone who wouldn’t dare stop her for such a thing, especially all considered, it was bound to be him. “Walden!” She shouted, being let into the house. Wherever he was, Bellatrix was certain he was there, certain he had heard the news and would be equally as furious-- or at least, closely behind. Waiting a moment, Bellatrix listened for sound of life, making herself comfortable pacing. “-- Walden!”

August 21st, 1979 Macnair Manor

Not even a day had passed since it had been agreed that releasing Cassandra Burke into the world was the smartest course of action, not even a day since the task of keeping an eye on both Walden and Cassandra had fallen to Narcissa and Alecto. And while Walden was family to Narcissa, she knew better than to even question the Dark Lord’s command. Besides Narcissa had long believed that Burke was a poison that would end up consuming everyone around her. That’s how Narcissa had convinced herself that keeping an eye on the one uncle who had always seen past her perfectly learned niceties and gave her books because while beauty and good looks is something you are born with, intelligence you need cultivate, tend to, make it flourish.

When the news of the disappearance of Emma Vanity reached Narcissa, she knew that while many people loved Emma, there would be only a handful willing to do whatever it took to get her back. Narcissa decided to head for Walden’s place, he would know what to do, and besides she was supposed to be close to him, keeping an eye on him. Narcissa was desperate to get a plan going, there was no way they wouldn’t move heaven and earth to get Emma. Emma who was like a sister to her, Emma who in any ways reminded Narcissa of herself, and yet was far braver than Narcissa ever would be.

“Uncle Walden” Narcissa called upon arrival, “Emma” she said, the name a desperate whisper, “we have to get her back” pushing back the tears, the unsaid words no matter what it takes.
