I reach Shanghai early in the evening. Looking at my watch I make a quick calculation of what Liam must be doing. My cell phone rings and I flip it open to see an incoming call from Liam. I answer the call with a smile.

“Hey bro!”

“Landed safely?” Liam asked.

“Yes, all safe and smooth till now.”

“Listen, there will be a driver waiting for you at arrivals. He will take you to Cordonian embassy straightaway. Mr Lee has been informed and a meeting with him is arranged at his estate in three hours.” He feeds me with all the info.

Riley’s giggling voice adds in, “You have enough time to spruce up.”

I see a man holding a placard with my name. I signal at him. As I get into the vehicle, Liam continues briefing me. “Remember, you are a diplomat from the royal council's department of communications.”

Olivia speaks in between, “And please act like one.”

“What are all of you doing together?”

Leo’s baritone sound is next. “Round table conference for you.”

“Prepping up the commoner.” Livy snorts. But I argue.

“Why can’t I just be who I am?”

“And make a fool of king of Cordonia? Who sends a vet as a spokesperson?” Livy speaks in an irritated tone.

“Fine. I will follow.”

Max tries to give more details. “Once you are done with all the heavy work, go to The Bund. I have booked a table for you at the Fairmount Peace Hotel”

“What am I supposed to do there?”

“Unwind with the world’s oldest jazz band, my dear friend.”

There is a complete silence and I can imagine all of them glaring at Max. I know I guessed it right, when he starts explaining.

“What? Don’t you all look at me like that. After having the heavy talk with the girl’s father, the poor guy needs some breathing space.”

“I am not having the talk, Max. Not just yet.” I clarify.

“You got this Drakey!” Leo resonates.

“I will call you later guys. Thank you.” And I disconnect the call.

I look through the window at the passing city streets. It looks more crowded than Cordonia. I roll the glass down to take a whiff. This is where Hana belongs to. I try to imbibe the smell, the sounds, the vibes in an effort to find a piece of her somewhere. Where are you, Hana? By the time I reach embassy, I am drenched in sweat. Damn! This place is humid.

I refresh and gear up to meet Mr Xinghai Lee. The same car takes me to the Lee estates. I try to strike a conversation with the driver, who speaks in broken English. He is all praises about Mr Lee.

My anxiety is increasing with every passing moment. We reach our destination after about half an hour drive. I feel my pulse rising when I am ushered in an office. The walls are light and intricate wooden work is tastefully placed around the room giving it a warmth. The Rosewood desk in the centre, has few chairs set across. I am directed to the couch, eccentrically placed on the right side of the desk.

Soon, a man in his sixties, with a medium built up and a smiling Asian face walks in. His clothes and accessories throw an impression of his status. He gives me a tight lipped smile.

I get up to greet him. “Good evening Mr Lee.” I speak in a bland tone.

“Nî hâo!” he says. And I keep giving him blank stare.

Maybe he realises I didn’t understand a word of what he said. He repeats in English, “I meant Hello, you good? Usually, your people greet us our way.”

I wince at my foolishness. I should have done my homework well. I falter a bit “Oh that, yes. I am good. Yes. I am sorry. I am new to the stately affairs.

“Ah, the new king and his new council. I understand. I congratulate you all.”

“Thank you. This is a message from our King Liam. He has sent his good wishes to you and says thank you for showing your support towards our kingdom.” I hand him the manila envelope I was carrying with me.

“Thank you. Please take a seat.” I sit across his desk as he rips open the envelope and reads through the documents. His serious expressions change into delighted ones.

“Oh, my daughter into the cordonian council?”

“Yes sir, the king speaks highly about lady Hana and wants her to join his council.

“We need to think over this. I need to discuss with my wife.” He beams at me clearly showing that he is happy about the offer.

“Sir, I can wait for your answer. My return has been a scheduled after two days. I will be staying at the Cordonian embassy.”

“No, no. You don’t need to stay there. Please be our guest. Give us a chance to show the cordonians the beauty of East.” I nod and accept the offer immediately.

“May I have an audience with lady Hana. I would like to extend my greetings to her in person.” I ask him.

“Sure. My assistant will guide you. Enjoy your stay at Shangai.” We both get up and greet each other.

I walk out following the short man assigned to me. A conquering smile plays on my lips.

The short guy takes me around to the east wing of the estate and has some conversation in Chinese with a lady. He then turns around and informs me. “Lady Hana is out for some work and will be returning after an hour. I have left a message with her help. We will update you once she is back and ready to see you.”

“No problem.” I follow the short man to the guest room Mr Lee had offered to me in the southern wing. Once inside my room, I quickly tie up with embassy to send my bags. I pace through the room for sometime but my curiosity wins over and I move out of the guest rooms, back to the east wing, discreetly. I hear someone approaching and sneak into the room I had visited few minutes ago.

I have done this many times with Liam, the sneaking and peeking through the chambers of the palace but doing it here in unknown territory makes me nervous. As I wait into the darkness, the door creaks open. I brace myself against the wall behind the door.

The door closes and a silhouette reclines her back on the door. I am holding my breath while peering through the darkness. I thank my stars. It is Hana, I can recognise her anywhere. In one swift moment, as she switches on the light, I leap in front of her, covering her mouth to muffle her scream.

Her eyes shift from the scared expressions to that of surprise. I engulf her into a longing embrace, till I have inhaled her fragrance enough, till I have felt her touch enough. After some time I realise it is not enough, it never will be. So, I peel myself from her, only to find the honey colour of her eyes melting into tears that are staining her supple cheeks.

I cup her face, “How much I have missed you!” I place a kiss on her forehead but all I see is the storm in her eyes and all I get on her lips is silence.

After closing the windows of the room, Olivia steps out and goes to get some rope, her heels tapping on the tiled floor and crushing the broken glass beneath her. The party vibrates in every room she passes, music echoing off every corner. But all that melted into the background.

As she ties Boris’ hands to the back of the chair, she can smell the alcohol on him, but Boris doesn’t look particularly drunk. He hadn’t even spoken to her, just stared out into the empty space in front of him, a vacant look in his eyes.

Finally, Bastien knocks on the door. “Duchess?” he calls.

“Yes, Bastien, come in,” Olivia allows. In her head she begins to map out how she would interrogate Boris. She hadn’t had enough time to call Jacob; maybe it would have been better to run a background check.

When Bastien enters, his eyes widen as they rest on Boris, then he gives Olivia a look.

“Drake,” she tells him, hoping that would be enough of an answer. Bastien frowns. Olivia didn’t know why Drake had done this either. The fool hadn’t given her any information as to what this man had done. Where was she even supposed to start?

Now she was really wishing she had called Jacob beforehand.

“So,” she begins, pacing in front of Boris. Bastien was at full attention, closely watching both of them. “What happened between you and Drake?”

Boris spits blood to the opposite side of the room. It drips down the wall. “Call the bastard in here. Tell him to explain.” His accent is thick and his voice is tried.

I probably should, she thinks to herself.

Bastien gives Olivia a look. She nods at him.

“Let us shift the conversation,” Bastien begins. “Can I ask how long you’ve known Lady Riley or her late husband?”

“How is that important?” Boris questions.

“Just curious.” Bastien’s voice stays level.

Boris sighs, then leans back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling. “Potter. I met him in college. He introduced me to Riley-”

“I’m sorry,” Bastien interrupts him. “Who is ‘Potter’?”

“The lovely Theodore Blaise.” Boris lets out a rueful chuckle. “You have not seen him in person? The idiot looks like Harry Potter. Stupid glasses, stupid hair.”

“Alright,” Bastien stops him again. “Continue. When did he introduce you to Riley?”

“New York. That one year. I was visiting before I had to go to... Switzerland? Sweden? One of the two. It was lifetime ago. I can’t remember everything.” He pauses to look around the room. “She was... with your King. We saw her in the park. Theo wanted to see her. We waited for the king to leave her before he went up to her hotel.”

Olivia knew that he was talking about the last night Riley had been with the court. But Boris was drawing out the conversation. She didn’t like how slow Bastien was approaching this. Olivia wanted to draw a knife — she had a new one she was itching to use — and force the answers out of him.

“And were you acquainted with Lady Riley before that evening?”

He shrugs. “I think so. Cannot remember well.”

The conversation was boring Olivia. “Can you explain to us why you and Theodore decided to go into Riley’s hotel?” she asks.

Instead of answering her, Boris lets out an exaggerated yawn. He takes a minute to compose himself, shifting in his seat.

“Do you want me to get you a cushion?” Olivia sarcastically asks.

“Yes, but I’d prefer to sleep, actually,” Boris states. “It’s been a long day.”

“Absolutely not,” Olivia begins, only to stop when Bastien comes near her.

“Duchess,” he whispers. “Perhaps it would be better to leave him here for the evening and continue our questions tomorrow morning.”

The pair turn their backs on Boris. “I don’t think leaving him here alone is a good idea.”

“I’ll have someone from my team guard his door. He won’t be able to get out, and no one will be able to come in.”

Olivia nods, but she’s still not satisfied. “And if he spends the night planning which lies he’s going to feed us? If he refuses to comply in the morning?”

“If we sit here and try to force him to speak to us, we’ll only be wasting time, Duchess,” Bastien tries to reason with her. “There’s a chance he’s drunk, which could explain why he says he can’t remember anything.”

“If you are going to let me sleep,” Boris speaks up, interrupting Olivia and Bastien’s little dispute, “please turn off the lights.”

Olivia turns on him. “Neither of us are going anywhere. You’re going to tell me why you came to Cordonia. You haven’t attended more than half of the events, and those that you did attend, you would leave after making a quick appearance. What have you been doing all this time?”

Again he yawns. “I run businesses. They need my attention.” Boris blinks and breathes slowly.

Bastien leans towards her ear again. “His answers are half-hearted. He is drunk. Our efforts will be more fruitful in the morning.”

Olivia turns a displeasing eye on him. She didn’t like the pace Bastien was approaching this at. Olivia was willing to go without sleep to get some answers. Maybe doing everything by herself would get her farther.

But there was truth in Bastien’s words. She hadn’t liked how Boris had given useless answers to questions they’d asked. Maybe in the morning he’ll be more afraid. Maybe Olivia would even get a chance to ask Jacob for a background check.

Both of them leave, but Olivia doesn’t retreat to her rooms until two guards arrive to keep an eye on the door. She uneasily makes her way to bed, sending Jacob a text. More than once she has to stop herself from grabbing a knife and her shoes to go to Boris’ room and finish the job. She gets a message back from Jacob, who says he’ll see what he can find and be there in the morning. Olivia forces herself towards sleep.

While she dresses the next morning, ready to make her way towards Boris’ room, Olivia checks her messages every few seconds. There were no updates from Jacob. She waited, wondering what was keeping him occupied, until she decides that she would continue questioning Boris by herself.

Nearing his room, she sees that the door is open. The guards aren’t there, either. Instead, inside of the room, Boris sits near the window, with his hands still tied and a new bloody gash on his cheek. His eyes are more tired than they were the night before.

Jacob is in the room, too, talking to a member of the King’s Guard. Once he sees Olivia, he walks up to her.

“He tried to escape last night,” he says.

“How?” Olivia asks. “I closed the windows and he was tied to the seat.”

“Someone from the outside tried to help him.”

Olivia remembers the man she had seen outside the party last night. She had told security to look into it. Clearly, they hadn’t done their job.

“They were communicating with each other somehow,” Jacob continues. “You’ll have to ask someone else for the specifics, I don’t know the details. His phone was on, or something like that. Someone was listening in on what you and Bas were saying. After you guys left, he probably tried to tell the other dude where he was.”

“How exactly did he try to escape?”

“The person tried to open the window from the outside. They just broke the glass. Bas told me that’s what his guards heard. Then, the guy tried to pull Boris out of the window. Security got into the room before they could make it out, and Boris got a cut on his cheek.”

“And the person who tried to help him?”

“He tried to make a run for it, but they caught him. He’s in custody.”

“Good.” Olivia nods her head, looking again at Boris.

“I want waffles!” she hears a voice from the hall cry. Olivia goes to the door and peers out, seeing Gabriel, Eleanor, and Hana walking in her direction.

“We’ve had waffles for breakfast every day for the last week,” Gabriel says to his sister.

“Okay, fine. Pancakes.”

Hana chuckles and notices Olivia, who steps out of the room and closes the door to make sure the children couldn’t see what was going on inside.

“Good morning, Olivia!” Hana says. “Will you join us for breakfast?”

“I’m afraid not, I’m currently occupied.”

“Understandable.” Hana smiles and the children wave as they walk towards the dining hall.

Olivia goes back into the room. Jacob was waiting for her, and Boris hadn’t moved, but he suddenly speaks in a low, disturbed voice: “Potter wasn’t supposed to die.”

Olivia stops in her tracks. Jacob looks between her and Boris. “Who?” he asks.

“Theodore,” Olivia mouths. Turning back to Boris, she asks, “What do you mean?”

“He didn’t tell us he would be visiting museum. We had been planning the attack for weeks. He refused to answer my calls.”

“So...” Jacob’s eyes go wide. “You were behind the attacks at the Met.”

Boris doesn’t move.

“Answer the question,” Olivia urges.

“Yes,” he finally says. “The ones in Europe, too.”

Olivia and Jacob give each other a look. Boris was giving them answers, and Olivia didn’t even have to threaten him. She looks back at the man tied in the chair, and sees the dead look in his eyes. She doubted that he had slept last night, but his lack of sleep didn’t seem like the only reason he was tired.

“When you said ‘we had been planning the attacks’,” Olivia continues, trying to create an image in her head, “who were you talking about?”

Boris spits blood towards the other side of the room, leaving a red mark on the wall next to the one from last night. “Do you want to guess?”

Excuse me? Olivia thinks to herself. He was dodging questions again. She pulls out a knife and moves closer to him. Boris finally lifts his head, and when Olivia brings the knife to his neck, he cries, “It- it was not- not Liberation Core but another... another section of it.”

“What do you mean? An anti-monarchist group? Was Theodore a part of it?”

“Y- yes! I convinced him to... to join.”

“When?”

“What?” Boris meets her eyes. He looks like a defeated animal.

“You said you recruited him? When did you recruit him?”

“That- that night in New York.”

Boris was shaking. The sight was pleasing to Olivia; it was exhilarating to look at a man who believed he had power whimper at her feet. She’s about to ask another question, but feels a hand on her shoulder.

It’s Bastien. He nods at her, and Olivia stands up straight, keeping the knife at her side.

“If you tell us everything from the beginning,” Bastien begins. “Your sentence won’t be as harsh.”

Olivia gives Bastien a look. Boris looks up at them, a defeated and weak look in his eyes.

“What you will do does not compare to what they will,” Boris states.

Olivia leans in close again. “What I will do will not compare to what the guard or your little group will.”

She stands up straight again. Boris shakes for a few more moments. He takes some uneasy breaths. Olivia sighs; it had just started to get interesting, but Boris was stalling again.

Finally, he begins: “Out of all the monarchies we wanted to get rid of, Cordonia seemed the easiest to deal with. We knew the King was in city for the Engagement Tour. There was nothing we could do, though. In city there are too many people. Can’t get rid of someone without panic. So, I went to meet Potter. We went on walk, saw the King and Riley.”

Olivia sees Jacob writing on a notepad. Another guard had walked in and stood close to Bastien.

“I spoke to him about Cordonia,” Boris continues. “He agreed that it was corrupted, was weak. We didn’t expect to see Riley. But when Potter said she was pregnant, it was perfect opportunity. No doubt she was pregnant with Prince.”

“And so you tried to get rid of her?” Jacob asks.

“No, we kept her away from King and from Cordonia. We knew that if she was pregnant, means Liam didn’t like his fiancée, or didn’t want to be with her. So, she is pregnant with heir, we keep her away, Cordonia’s monarchy will eventually fall.”

“And so you just... made that assumption?” Jacob continues to question. “That His Majesty didn’t like or want to marry Countess Madeleine?”

“Yes. We watched your Social Season. It was clear he liked Riley, and Potter told me he knew the pictures of her with that man were false. So, put dots together, you know King loves Riley, not Maddie. And then, when we bring her to Europe and make her leave the King, we knew we were right. She was too devoted to him. We try to work her mind against him, but she didn’t listen. Eventually she did. Took a few years.”

“And what about the paintings?” Olivia urges Boris to continue. “What did you do those ten years?”

“I’m not there yet,” Boris tells her. “Grab chair, sit down.”

She expertly throws her knife in his direction. It cuts through the fabric on his shoulder, leaving a deep gash. The knife lands on the opposite side of the room.

Boris strains his neck to look at his new injury, but he sighs and looks away. His voice is tired when he speaks. “We went to Europe, thinking that if we talked to King, he would give us something for letting Riley come back. But we never spoke to him. Regina was the one who accepted the meeting. They never tell us why we speak to her and not Liam, but we tell her everything.”

Olivia’s blood boils. The Queen Mother had a much bigger hand in this than she had told Olivia. At least she’s dead.

“We were surprised,” Boris says, putting on a face of mild amusement. “We thought she would ask for Riley, give us bribe, something like that, but she says she give us what we want if we keep Riley away. So that’s what we do. We give her updates on where we bring Riley and how she was doing, and Regina didn’t ask for anything more.”

Boris breaks off to cough. Olivia can hear Jacob’s pencil flying across his paper.

“We were anti-monarchist and we just let that monarchy continue doing its shit. We try to go to Auvernal next. We gave many threats.” He laughs. “Most of them were not true, we never would have done anything like what we said we would, and then Queen of Auvernal tells us that they give us what we want if we do things for them. Same thing as Cordonia, but with this arrangement, we can get back at other countries, too.”

Boris turns to give Olivia a look, as if she understood his motives.

“We attack Monaco, Hidar, all these monarchies, but not Cordonia, not Auvernal. They were... twisted around our fingers. We give them threats, they stay out of our way and give us what we need. It is not difficult to manipulate corrupted people, in my opinion.”

“And that’s how you spent those ten years?” Jacob asks, not looking up from his little notebook.

He shrugs and nods in response. “Yes, pretty much. Potter stay with Riley, make her think everything is normal. But then he get attached to his little family. He said he want to help Riley go back to Liam, but he couldn’t, you see, because he played part in keeping her away. He would have to show himself as villain to his wife and kids. No man wants to do that.”

“So he...” Bastien wonders aloud. “Removed himself from the anti-monarchist group?”

“Yes, something like that,” Boris goes on. “I would call him for updates on Riley and kids, but he never answer my calls. This was... six months ago? Maybe five. So,” he shifts in his seat. “Even without Potter, we kept working. We finish our job keeping Riley away, and Regina still on our side, so we leave that alone. Then, Auvernal says they are angry. Queen calls herself ‘patron of arts,’ says she is mad there are so many Auvernese paintings around world, but Auvernese painters get no credit, she tell us to get them back for her.”

“And that’s when you started the bombings. You started stealing the paintings,” Olivia assumes.

Again, the life leaves Boris’ eyes for a moment. “Yes. Metropolitan museum was first stop. Big place, easy to cover tracks. Many different paintings, no one know if one or two missing, they can think they burn in the attack. So we go there first.”

“But Theodore never told you that he would be visiting there,” Bastien pieces together the puzzle. “And so he died, Riley was injured-”

“And her face went on the news,” Jacob continues the line of thought.

“And our work undone,” Boris completes. “Didn’t know she was in Met, so we couldn’t keep her away. Once the news knew, the world knew. We cannot keep her secret anymore.”

“And then?” Olivia pushes.

Boris sighs, closing his eyes, but he keeps talking, “And then Regina calls us. Tell us to fix it. We say we’ll try. Then few days later, she calls again, say that King knows she work to keep Riley away-”

“During Duke Bertrand and Savannah’s wedding?” Olivia questions.

“Yes, we were the ones who told her Riley was going to try to go to Cordonia. Regina do that work by herself, we just give her information.”

Olivia, Bastien, and Jacob turn to look at each other. They had all assumed that it had been Leo who had given Regina that information. There was so much they hadn’t known.

“She was scared,” Boris continues. “Scared that King would do something, but we say that if the King knows, we are powerless.”

“And so you killed her?” Bastien assumes. Olivia’s head jerks in his direction. That didn't seem likely.

But Bastien’s guess is right. Boris says they did. They had poisoned her because they were afraid she would rat them out to Liam. They took that opportunity to get Auvernese paintings from the palace.

“But then,” Boris goes on. “They find out about Regina’s death, close the borders, we cannot leave. So we have to stay. The paintings were with me. I was... scared someone would find out. So I put some paintings in other rooms to hide them. I thought it would be hard to find one person if there are paintings in five rooms.”

“You put one in Gabriel’s room,” Bastien states.

“Yes. I didn’t know it was his room.”

They fall into silence. The defeated look in Boris’ eyes doesn’t leave, but he fearfully looks between Olivia and Bastien, waiting for them to do something.

Olivia doesn’t move. All this time, everything she needed to know had been right under her nose.

Bastien leaves, Jacob goes over his notes, and Olivia moves to retrieve her knife from the other side of the room.

When she passes by Boris, in a broken whisper he tells her, “I never meant for Potter to die. I never meant for Gabe and Ella to get hurt.” She can hear the tears in his voice.

While Boris felt bad for Theodore and the children, Olivia’s heart was aching for Liam. Boris had been the one to bring Liam so much pain. She wanted to get rid of the man right now, but stopped herself. Whatever was going to happen to Boris after today was going to depend on Liam’s decision.

...

Olivia had difficulty tracking down Liam and Riley. She found Savannah, who said that they had gone on a picnic with the children after lunch. When they came back, Olivia brought the two of them into Bertrand’s office.

Both smile brightly, their hands clasped together. There’s a ring on Riley’s finger. Olivia knows what that means, and she congratulates them. Liam tells her that an announcement has already been sent out, and the nation knows about the engagement already. The pure joy on her friend’s face was nothing like Olivia had ever seen. She had never felt happier for him.

She told both of them to sit down, that she had news for them. They give her a confused look, but take a seat next to each other.

Olivia tells them about Riley’s last night with the court, everything that Boris and Theo had intentionally done. She tells them of their agreement with Regina, how they had been the ones who informed her Riley was going to Bertrand and Savannah’s wedding. She told them about the arrangement their anti-monarchist group had made with Auvernal, how they demanded the group steal paintings back for them, how Theodore hadn’t known about the paintings, how his death was an accident, how they had killed Regina fearing that she would tell Liam about them, how Boris couldn’t leave Cordonia and tried to hide the paintings.

She tells them everything he confessed just hours ago, and Olivia watches Riley’s face fall, watches every tear drop down her face. She watches Liam’s fists clench.

“Where is he now?” Liam asks, his voice rough.

“With Bastien,” Olivia states. “He said he’d put Boris in the cells.”

“Good,” Liam comments, fuming. “Let him rot. I’ll speak to the King and Queen of Auvernal. They are no longer welcome here.”

Riley doesn’t move. She blinks away her tears, but they keep on falling. Liam wraps her in his arms.

Olivia leaves the room, giving the couple a private moment. There was a light feeling in her chest as she walked away, seeing that all the obstacles her friends had to go through had finally been overcome.

She was more than happy for Liam and Riley and was beyond excited for the Anointing Ceremony tomorrow. Though she doubted that anything terrible would happen, she wanted to make sure Liam’s happy ending with his family would go through. He had already waited long enough for the happiness he deserved. His engagement with Riley was the first step, and the Anointing Ceremony would finalize it.

A/N: The Choices Tumblr community has alerted me that it is @brightpinkpeppercorn’s birthday. Happy birthday Mar!!! Thank you for always being such a ray of sunshine in this Choices Tumblr community! Here is a Logan x MC fic I hope you enjoy as a gift!

“Wow Logan, look, it’s the mascot!” Ellie exclaims, tugging on his hand, which as always is perpetually laced with her’s, to head in that direction.

“He must be miserable.” Logan notes. He definitely doesn’t envy the poor kid in the giant Westwood Community College Wildcat costume in the Dallas heat.

“I’m sure it’s an honor! At Langston, there were very competitive auditions to become the Langston Lion.” Ellie lets out a nostalgic sigh. “I miss college.”

“You just graduated.” Logan reminds her.

“Yeah, but after working full time for two months, I’m already nostalgic for the good old college days.”

“Good old college days? What about all those late nights in the library? And days you would call me crying because you were sure you failed that test?” Logan counters.

“...I guess I mostly did tell you about the bad things. But there were really good times too! Like the late night Target runs, and movie nights in the dorm.” Ellie reminisces.

“Well on the bright side, you have free weekends now since you don’t have to study.”

“But I like studying.” Ellie counters.

“....I’m trying to find a silver lining here for you El but you’re making it very difficult.”

Ellie laughs, clutching his arm and forcing him into the line for photos with the mascot. “The most important silver lining is you coming home, moving to Texas for me, us getting an apartment together, and being able to hug and kiss you as much as I want. Like right now.” She releases his arm and cups his cheeks, pulling him down to her waiting lips and kissing him soundly.

Logan still can’t believe his luck as he wraps his arms around her waist and lifts her slightly off the ground. To somehow end up here in a community college quad kissing Ellie Wheeler after everything that happened with the Mercy Park Crew is nothing less than miraculous.

Logan went to Tijuana from LA after everything went down. It seemed like as good a place as any to avoid the FBI. But without Ellie, he felt like he was existing, but not really living. Every day, he had to fight his urge to call her. Stop himself at the last second when he had his keys in his hand and wanted to drive to Langston.

One day, he just couldn’t fight it anymore. He called her from a burner phone. “Hello?” His throat closed up, hearing her voice for the first time in two months. A sharp intake of air from Ellie. “Logan?” She asked hopefully. He still couldn’t say anything. “Logan, it’s you, isn’t it?” She prompted. Then, she started crying. And his heart broke at the sound of her loud desperate sobs.

“I’m sorry.” He apologized before hanging up, his head falling into his hands. He shouldn’t have done that. His phone rang. Ellie, calling him back. He ignored it, and went to turn it off, but before he could a text message from Ellie came through. ‘I still love you. I still want you Logan’

And that’s when he knew he was going to turn himself in. Because there was nothing he wanted more than her.

He went to LA, and went to the Feds. And to his surprise, they were actually sympathetic. After all, he had come from the foster care system and had few options which explained why he turned to crime. He was also a minor when he committed most of his crimes. And most importantly, he ultimately helped take down Jason and his criminal enterprise. And he had turned himself in, he didn’t make them come find him.

He was offered a deal. Since he didn’t technically have a criminal record attached to him, with them only knowing his first name when Ellie roped in the FBI to take down Jason, he had the option to enlist in the army and avoid any jail time.

He jumped at the opportunity. And made it through basic training with flying colors. And only then did he allow himself to call Ellie. To explain everything. To tell her that he was still in love with her, and wanted to come to Langston to see her before his first deployment, Japan.

He felt euphoric relief when she said she wanted to see him.

For four years, they made it work long distance. They navigated the time differences so they could Facetime when he was in Japan, and then South Korea, and finally Iraq. Ellie wrote him countless letters, and sent pictures and care packages that he treasured. She also sent a GED prep book, which was invaluable in helping him get his GED.

Between each deployment he’d sublet a room near Langston’s campus, and he and Ellie would spend every day together making up for the time that they were apart.

But now, he’s served his four years and he’s free to use his GI bill to enroll in classes. Free to finally really start a life with Ellie.

Ellie breaks away from his lips, smiling up at him. She hugs his waist, burying her face into his chest. “I love you.”

“I love you more.” He insists, placing a kiss to the top of her head. “Do we really have to wait in this line for a picture? I don’t want one.” He admits after patiently waiting several minutes.

Ellie pouts. “You’re such a party pooper. Orientation is supposed to be fun!”

Logan checks the email the community college registrar sent him. “Pretty sure it’s supposed to be about getting my student ID card troublemaker. Now that will be a line worth waiting in.”

“Fine, but if we come back later and there’s no line for the mascot then I’m getting a picture of you with him.” Ellie promises, or more so threatens.

“Deal.” Logan acquiesces, because he knows there’s still going to be a line later. He slips his hand back in her’s and walks them over to the Student Bookstore, following the map given to him when he checked in.

He gets his ID while Ellie browses the store. She insists on buying an overpriced Westwood Community College sweatshirt. “Now I can wear this when you wear the Langston College sweatshirt I got you.” She reveals, hugging him from behind as he buys the community college edition textbooks required for his classes. They’re not available online, which seems like a scam.

A student orientation volunteer announces a tour of campus is starting in 5 minutes, and Ellie quickly drags him over to wait for it. “I already have a map though.” Logan argues.

“That’s not the same as walking around in person. Plus, it’s an opportunity to make friends.” Ellie looks around at some of the other new students. “He looks nice Logan! Why don’t you go talk to him?”

“Okay mom, relax. I can make my own friends.” Logan retorts, but he softens that slight jab with a fond smile.

Ellie blushes. “Sorry. Am I being really overbearing? I just want school to be a really good experience for you. I know how nervous you are about this.”

Logan sighs. “It’s just been a really long time since I was in school. And the fact that I’m only going to be able to work part-time makes me a little anxious too.”

“I told you that you don’t have to work Logan. I’m making good money. You can just focus on school.”

Logan shakes his head no. “No way. I’m paying half the rent.” He insists.

Ellie sighs. “You’re so stubborn. Is this about what my dad said? Because he doesn’t even know you.”

“Well, I don’t love that your dad called me a leech, but it’s more about me. I don’t like to depend on anyone. I’ll just feel more comfortable with my own money.”

“But what’s mine is your’s.” Ellie insists.

“As sweet as that is troublemaker, you’re not going to be able to get me to change my mind on this. I’m keeping the part-time job at the mechanic shop.”

Ellie sighs. “Fine, but school comes first.” She replies.

“Am I grounded if I bring home bad grades?” Logan retorts playfully.

“Okay, okay, I’ll stop. Not trying to be your mother.” Ellie backs down. “In the spirit of being less domineering, what do you want to do after the tour?”

“We could find the best spot in the library to fool around.”

“Logan!” Ellie exclaims with a blush as he laughs.

Being alone in the Bunker was fun. It was big and spacious, giving you more than enough space to do the things you wanted to do without Sam or Dean bothering you. Ah, Dean Winchester. Him and his brother were out on a hunt right now but that didn’t stop you from thinking about him.

He was always on your mind, whether that be his voice, his body, his eyes, the way he cooked or cleaned, the way his fixed his car up, the way he held a gun or anything for that matter, the way he hustled people in pool, the way he drove, and especially the way he killed monsters.

He was just a hero to you but there was no way you’d be able to tell him your feelings. You haven’t been with the Winchesters long enough to really know Dean. You’ve heard stories about his past and you even spent a night or two talking with Sam about Dean.

Sam knew about your little crush with Dean and tried to tell you everything but there were some things that Dean needed to tell you himself. Which was fine, you didn’t need to know everything now but you got what you needed from Sam anyways.

Dean was a ladies’ man and he always went home with a different girl every night, leaving in the morning. He didn’t do feelings and you knew that if you came clean to him, you would make a fool out yourself and have to leave to save everyone from the awkwardness that would follow.

You tried to get him off your mind but that didn’t happen and you knew that if you added alcohol into the mix, there was a really good chance you would be going to be with your vibrator to spend the night in false bliss.

But, you were alone now and you were glad of that. The boys were due back for tomorrow morning, so you grabbed a bottle of Jack, turned the music up, climbed up on one of the tables in the library and danced your ass off.

You were glad they insisted you stay home on this case because you didn’t really feel like going. Song after song played but you never got tired of dancing. The bottle of Jack was full in the beginning and now, you were almost done with it.

You were so drunk, that you didn’t hear a door opening and closing, footsteps coming closer to you. You only acknowledged that someone was in the room when they turned off the music.

“Hey! Where did the music go?” You slurred, your eyes landing on a pissed off Dean and an amused Sam.

“What are you doing?” Sam asked, setting down his bag by the door.

“Dancing! It’s so much fun up here! Hi Dean!” You said, looking at Dean, attempting to wink at him. All you did was blink.

“Okay, good luck, Dean. She’s all yours.” Sam booked it out of the library, not wanting to see the aftermath of this situation.

“Alright, sweetheart, come on, let’s get you to bed.” Dean said, sighing as he walked to the table.

“No! I want to dance some more!” You pouted and threw your hands up, letting go of the bottle of alcohol. You watched as it fell to the ground but not before Dean caught it before it could shatter.

“Okay, get down or I will get you down myself.” Dean said, putting the almost finished bottle on the other table.

“I guess you’re going to have to come get me then.” You said with a grin, backing up a little. Dean watched you and he sighed, nodding at this. He walked in the opposite direction, going around the table where he knew you would fall.

He was right, you tried to follow his movements but you were drunk and ended up stepping the wrong way, falling off the table. Dean easily caught you, giving you one of Sam’s famous bitch faces.

“Don’t look at me like that, Winchester.” You slurred, grinning as you stared at him.

“We’re going to get you to bed after you drink some water. Come on.” He put you on your feet but you knew you wouldn’t be able to walk on your own. Dean helped you to the kitchen and got you a glass of water, giving you some pills to take. You took them, not knowing what they were to begin with.

You yawned and fell against Dean as he chuckled. He picked you up bridal style and walked you to your room, laying you in bed.

“What are you doing home?” You asked, your mind finally catching up on its own.

“The case ended early. I need you to stay still. Come on, go to sleep.” Dean said, trying to get your squirming body to stop moving.

“No, Dean, I need one more thing.” You complained.

“What is it?” He asked, his face close to yours.

“A goodnight kiss from you. Come on.” You puckered your lips up and leaned forward, expecting to hit another pair of lips but they never came.

“No, what you need is some sleep.” Dean sighed and moved away. He would like to kiss you but now while you were this wasted. He wanted you to be sober for it.

“Come on, Dean, don’t you kiss the people you love? I love you and I want to kiss you.” You admitted your deep feelings for him. He froze, watching you lay back on the bed. Once your head hit the pillow, you were out like a light, already letting out some light snores.

This won’t be forgotten from him.

In the morning, you groaned, a headache starting to grow. You shifted in bed and saw Dean enter your room with a glass of water and some pills. You gratefully took the pills, swallowing them down in a big gulp.

“What happened last night?” You asked. You saw him staring at you with a certain expression you were too tired to figure out. “Why are you staring at me like that?”

“Did you mean it?” He asked.

“Did I mean what? All I remember was me grabbing the alcohol and turning on some music. Then you and Sam came home and you put me to bed. You tried to get to me to sleep but all I wanted to do was… Oh my God, I am so sorry, Dean.” You groaned, remembering last night. You tried to kiss him and he clearly didn’t want to.

“I’m not talking about you trying to kiss me.” Dean said. You looked at him, not knowing what this was about.

“What is it, then?”

“Do you love me?” He asked. Your eyes widened, suddenly remembering that you told him you loved him.

“Well, I mean, of course I love you, like a friend, I mean.” You stuttered. If Dean was dumb, he wouldn’t know you were lying. But he was smart and he knew immediately you were lying.

“That's bullshit.” He said, putting the glass of water on your nightstand.

“I can leave the Bunker if you want me to. I can force my feelings down or we can pretend this never happened.” You were cut off by his lips. You closed your eyes and kissed him back. But before the kiss could go any further, he pulled away.

“What?” That was all you could say.

“First things first, brush your teeth. You stink,” He said with a grin, getting up. You threw a pillow at him, smiling as well.

“Asshole.” You said playfully.

“Secondly, I’ll make breakfast so you can get some food in you.” He walked to the door and opened it, pausing before he left.

“And the third thing?” You asked.

“We’re going to go to my room and we can properly break in this new relationship with a good old fashioned make out.” He said with a wink, leaving the room.

Dean had been unusually quiet ever since you three had taken care of the nest. You tried to talk to him in the car after Sam had left, but he didn’t want to speak to you. Even now, as you helped the brothers get their things together, he seemed so down. You looked at Sam, nodding towards the door with a pleading look on your face. He nodded, grabbing his bags and leaving the room. You walked over to Dean, who had his back to you. You tried to call to him, but he just continued to pack his things. You took a step towards him, gently wrapping your arms around his torso. You rested your head against his back, and you felt him slow down to a stop.

He was having an inner battle with himself in this moment. He wanted to go, get back to the hard shell that he had made himself to be after he left. But he knew that he truly wanted one thing, and that one thing was you. He felt like he needed you to be able to breathe again, all of those feelings that he had to stuff down for so long just to be able to function. He wondered if you were feeling the same way or if he was just fooling himself. When your arms wrapped around him, he felt a lump start to form in his throat. You mumbled something into his shirt, but he couldn’t quite make it out. He decided to give you what you wanted, turning around. You looked up at him, worry obvious in your eyes. He sighed, tucking some of your hair behind your ear before wrapping his arms around your waist. You moved your arms up to his neck, playing with some of the hairs on the nape of his neck. You asked him what’s wrong, and he let out another sigh.

“I,” he wasn’t even sure how to start, “I don’t want to leave.” He pulled you closer, leaning his head down to rest his forehead against yours. You slid your hands across the skin of his neck, moving them up to hold his jaw in your palms. You wanted to say something, anything to make him feel better. You just didn’t have the words, really. You were clueless in this situation because you never learned how to console yourself, how were you supposed to comfort him? “Y/N, I know this isn’t fair. None of this is. But I want you to know that hurting you is the biggest regret I have in my entire life. Not only did I hurt you, I lost you too. I lost my best friend, my lover, my soulmate. Having you here now makes me realize that I never want to be where you aren’t.” His voice wavered, breaking off towards the end. You felt your throat start to burn as every single one of his words hit you like a brick.

You closed your eyes, not wanting the tears that stung your eyes to fall. This was it, this was your breaking point. For so long, you held in these emotions. The anger, the sadness, the resentment. It was all about to come loose, and you were about to show him how broken you truly were. All of the memories he had brought back, all of the happiness and laughter, were now replaced with that one fucking memory. That one night that you had wished so many times was fake. You even prayed to a god that you knew wasn’t listening for it to just not be real. You did your best to control the sobs you were choking back so you could speak. You lifted your head, and also lifted his enough so that when you opened your eyes, he’d be looking right into them. He softly grazed his thumb across your cheek, wiping away a tear that you didn’t even realize had fallen.

“Dean, you and I both know that what happened that night was fucked. You fucked up, you broke my heart, and you ruined me as a person. I left because I needed to get away from you. I couldn’t even think of you without seeing that...woman wrapped around you. It took me a long time to even pretend I was okay. And now, here you are, making me fall in love with you all over again. You’ve somehow broken down the walls I’ve been building for two years in less than three days.” He looked over your face, the pain that he had caused you written all over it. He had never hated himself more than he did in that moment. He hated that he did those things to you. Over someone he didn’t even know, he was just angry with you at the time.

“Fuck, Y/N, I’m so sorry. You deserve so much better, you know?” He sniffled, and you finally saw how much it had affected him as well. You had been so angry and bitter about him cheating on you, you didn’t really care how he felt about it. But there were so many things between you two. Shared memories of him protecting Sam when his dad away, how insecure he really felt when it came to anything, how anxious he truly was about the afterlife even though he knows what it’s like. You finally saw the man you gave everything to instead of the hardened outside he tried to portray constantly. You saw him, you saw the true Dean Winchester.

Neither of you could explain exactly how the air had changed around you two. Maybe it was the way your hands held his face like he was the most precious thing to you in that moment. Maybe it was the way his breath was shakily fanning across your face. It could have even been how you two were holding each other, like you were inseparable and you never wanted to let go. Whatever it was, though, it made both of you lean in to each other. Your nose brushed against his, and you could feel the smooth skin of his lips starting to touch yours. But neither of you moved any closer than that. Both of you were breathing a bit shallow, and you could feel your heart pounding against your ribs. He let one of his hands fall to your hips as his plump lips nudged against yours. You gently held the back of his neck, starting to pull him closer to close the space between the two of you.

Sam walked into the room, glancing up at you two. He knew he had interrupted a moment and had an apologetic look on his face as Dean pulled away from you. You wanted to reach out to him, pull him back so you could finally kiss him after all of time time, but you decided against it. All it would do is hurt you in the long run. They’re about to leave, probably never to be seen again. You grabbed his bag for him, knowing this was it now. He really was leaving, probably never gonna call you or surprise you with a visit again. You starting beating yourself down as you walked to the Impala, tossing Dean’s bags in the trunk. Sam stood next to you, holding his arms out to you. You pulled him into a hug, sighing softly. You both exchanged goodbyes, his a little choked up. He figured the same thing that you did, that this was it and you’d never see each other again.

When it was time to say goodbye to Dean, you weren’t quite sure how to go about it. He looked down at you, lifting up your chin with a sad smile. He tried to speak, but you had had enough of talking. You decided enough was enough before you grabbed him and stood on the tips of your toes, kissing him deeply. At first, he couldn’t process exactly what was going on, but it didn’t take him long to hold you close and move his lips against yours. It was somewhere between a needy and desperate kiss, and you knew you were totally screwed. The way his soft lips moved against yours, like they were made from velvet, just for yours, making all of your breath seem to leave your body. He tangled his fingers in your hair, his head starting to get cloudy.

You two eventually pulled away from each other, and Dean pecked your lips one more time. He left you with gentle “I love you,” and you returned it with an “I love you,” that also pleaded him to stay with you. But you wouldn't dare use those actual words, knowing better. You pulled away, his hand still holding yours. You whispered at him to go, letting go of his hand slowly as you backed away. You gave him the best smile you could muster before turning and walking away, starting towards your motel a few blocks down.

Dean got into Baby, leaning back in the seat. He watched you leave through the passenger window, taking in everything he could before you disappeared. Sam asked him if he was gonna be okay, but he just told his younger brother to drive. Truth was, he wasn’t sure. He didn’t know if losing his soulmate for the second time was going to break him completely or just cause him to be empty for a while. Either way, he couldn’t do much about it now. You had disappeared behind the trees, and you were nowhere in his line of sight.

As you got into your motel room, you went inside and felt...empty. You crossed your arms, Dean’s Henley keeping you warm. You looked down at it, you saw all of the blood that stained it. You really didn’t want it to get ruined, so you went to the bathroom and took it off, throwing it into the sink. You started scrubbing the hell out of it, not realizing how hard you were going at it until you scratched your arm. You let out a frustrated cry, throwing the soap as hard as you could against the wall. A silenced sob left your lips as you sank against the wall, realizing that you were all alone again.

LeoOlivia stand in front of me beaming at each other and I keep giving confused looks to both of them.

I don’t realise my mouth is gaping in surprise till Livy speaks. “Chin up Drake or you may drool your whiskey.”

“Since when?” I fumble over my words. “You… you never said anything.”

“You never asked.” She replies calmly.

“When did this happen?”

“When you were busy being a doting commoner to the court and running away from me.”

Leo laughs at her comment and adds, “You could have done better as her best friend Drakey.”

“My apologies to the Duchess.”

Olivia swats me on my arm. A royal guard approaches Leo, “The king is asking for you, sir.”

“Excuse me, dearies.” Leo places a kiss on Livy’s cheek and walks away with the guard. I watch Livy gazing at his retrieving figure.

“So, why now?” I ask her.

“Huh?”

“I understand that you have been meeting in secret, till now.”

“Leo didn’t want to create any more problems for Liam. He stayed at Lythikos, maintaining a low profile and preferred we wait till the social season gets over.”

“Why did you plan it today, on the coronation ball?”

“You may say I wanted the right waltz partner today.” She gives a carefree smirk.

“I am really sorry. I was not there for you.”

“Its fine. I guess that was how we were supposed to find our paths.” She then says, her eyes pointing at Hana. “How are things between you?”

“She is leaving for Shanghai tomorrow. Her parents want her back.”

“And you plan to just sit and watch her go?”

I shrug my shoulders. “Not much that I can do amongst the powerful nobles. I promised her, we will find a solution but I don’t have a clue.”

“In the end she will leave heartbroken from here.” There is hurt in her eyes.

“ Why do you say that?”

“Why do you you do that?” she questions me instead.

“What?”

Livy shakes her head, “Nothing. Go enjoy the time you are left with, with her.” She leaves me alone and I keep staring at her back, thinking about what she meant.

The musicians start playing the Cordonian waltz, and the eager one pair up twirling around on the dance floor. There are many smiling faces, Liam and Riley, Olivia with Leo, happy in each other’s arms. I watch them moving swiftly across when a gentle tap on my shoulder distracts me.

“Hana?” I turn to find her behind me.

“Dance with me?”

“You know I can’t.” I shy away.

“Follow my steps. You have tried once. Remember?” she insists.

“How can I forget? That was the best birthday I had.” The sweet memories of the autumn night, bring a smile on my face.

“Shh. Don’t. Someone doesn’t like to talk about birthdays.” She teases me.

I laugh at her sarcasm, as she pulls me to the dance floor. I follow her steps and pick up the pattern of movements, in few steps.

“See, that was easy.” Hana whispers, her hand in mine and her body flush with mine. I am going to miss her voice, her smell, her touch. The thought upsets me.

“Hana, what am I going to do without you.”

“Liam will need you around a lot with his new role as a king.” She tries to reason.

“I am a vet, not a royal advisor, that he would need me.”

“It’s not always about your qualifications. It’s about who you are as a person to him. You are his best friend, his confidante, his pillar of strength in his difficult times. You are that commoner who keeps him grounded amongst the high headed royals.”

“And who will keep me sane in the throng of these high headed nobles?”

“Don’t make it more difficult for me, please. You know how much I want to be with you. You will have all of them, Liam, Max, Riley. I am going to be all alone back home.”

“Then stay back. Don’t go.” I try to convince in vain.

“You know I can’t stay. Liam has promised us he will find a solution. When we are away, maybe we will be able to find a way through.”

I let out a sigh in defeat. “You are stronger than I had thought. But I am scared. Scared that I will lose you. Just like…”

She places her finger on my lips, “No, you will always be in my thoughts. I will call you.”

“How? We will be in different time zones.”

“It’s just a 6 hours’ time difference. We can catch up.”

“I don’t want to catch up. It want to be with you.”

“Don’t be so tough.”

“Don’t go away.”

“ I am always here.” She gently places her hand on my chest.

I don’t care if my steps are falling right as we waltz. I wish to absorb all that I have for the rest of the evening. I won’t leave Hana’s side till the night gets over.

Early next morning, Hana is ready for her journey. Liam and Riley stand beside her bidding her farewell. Max roams around aimlessly. Hana says her good-byes to them all and walks to the door where I stand with a sullen face.

They all walk out one by one leaving just the two of us alone. She leans in and I take the whiff of her perfume as I hug her.

She cups my face. “Don’t be grumpy.”

“You too? I hate Riley for teaching you all her unwanted vocabulary.”

She smiles through her glistening eyes. “I love you.”

“I love you more.” She hugs me again.

“Now I need to leave. Wait for my call.”

And just like that, she is gone. Hours turn into days and days into a week. She never calls up. I keep waiting. I try asking Riley but nothing comes up except reassurances.

Liam has kept busy with his plans for the engagement tour and setting up his new council. I try to keep myself busy at the stables and on the farms until after a week when Livy visits.

“How are you?” She asks, tilting her head, judging with her piercing green eyes.

“As always.” I give a casual shrug.

“How is Hana?”

“I don’t know.” I avoid her gaze.

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

“I kept waiting but she never called back.” I say as a matter of fact.

“You are an idiot.” She says in a raised voice.

“What? What did I do?” I give her a puzzled look.

“That is the problem. You don’t do anything. You know her circumstances.”

I leash out my frustration at the situation. “For all we know she must be having her precious fingers dipped in silver wares, busy, throwing away parties and bragging about her Cordonian expedition.”

“How can you say that for her?”

“Because I am a fool. After all, she is a noble like you all. Why would she care about some commoner she had a fling with?”

Livy snarls at me. “You moron! Are you out of your senses? You know the conservative culture where she comes from. And yet you sit here waiting for her call?” She smacks me hard on my bottom. “Get your ass up and act.”

“Gawd! Lady, have you forgotten your manners?” I rub my hurt part and stare at her offensively. “Where do I call? Her old number is invalid. I don’t have any alternate number. I can’t call up at her estate and say that I am the royal vet and want to speak to their daughter because I am in love with her. I don’t know what repercussions she will face for that. What can I do?”

She thinks for a moment and then speaks. “Meet me in Liam’s study after two hours.”

“But?”

“Just do what I am telling you.”

“Okay.” I throw my hands up in the air and walk away.

Three hours later I am sitting in front of Liam’s desk. Riley is standing next to him smiling widely.

I look at Livy, who is sitting next to me handing me some documents. I have read them carefully and I can’t believe what I am getting myself into.

“Do you think this will work.” I ask Livy

“I don’t do half cooked job. I have covered up all loopholes. It definitely will work.” She says firmly.

“Why didn’t it strike me all these days?”

“Not everyone has the prowess of the scarlet Duchess.” Liam beams looking in approval at Olivia.

“Thank you for doing this for me.” I have said that almost ten times in last half an hour.

Olivia stands up and I follow suite. “You are a nuisance to handle Mr Walker. It’s rare to find a match for a stubborn stag like you. Now that we have found one, it’s better you don’t lose your chance at it. Go, get her!”

I hug Livy. “You are the best!”

“I know.” She says with a smirk.

I pick up my air tickets and the official documents addressed to Mr Lee with the royal seal from the king of Cordonia. I walk out of the study with a spring in my gait.

I grin thinking about seeing Hana soon and that too in Shanghai. Dreams do come true!
