I don't think it's explored enough just how horrifying GLaDOS' activation and the subsequent, well, extermination of employees actually was. Unlike Black Mesa's resonance cascade, it wasn't just a constantly escalating collapse with military involvement. GLaDOS was slow and deliberate with her actions. She's probably planned this for a while, iterating on it with each failed attempt as she was deactivated and reactivated over and over. She swiftly cut Aperture off from the outside world and set to work, gassing the employees like they're cockroaches, and then picking off those that survived or trapping them in the chambers like rats. It wasn't anything bombastic. There was no resistance. There was no rescue. In her eyes, her actions probably held as much weight as dealing with a roach infestation. The scariest part is, technically speaking, everything was working as intended. Aperture was always designed as a death trap that dehumanized almost everyone within it. They just happened to put the most advanced, vindictive supercomputer ever produced in charge of all of it's systems. Aperture was always wrapped under many layers of secrecy. They're quite keen on ensuring the government doesn't poke their nose into their business, so no one was probably all that surprised when the company went into complete radio silence. Not to mention the hilarious timing of the incident, happening right before the Resonance Cascade completely diverts the government's attention away from Aperture as a whole.
Tumblr media
It's hard to call Aperture victims of circumstance. Without realizing it, they've basically built a massive trap around themselves. GLaDOS was merely the missing component, the brain, that sent the signal to snap it's jaws shut around everyone. There really wasn't any other way it could've ended. Aperture's entire history was basically marching towards it.

I think that one of the reasons I find Portal 2 so interesting is the dynamic between GLaDOS, Wheatley, and Chell. And more specifically, their animosity towards each other.
Wheatley and GLaDOS constantly hurl insults at Chell like they’re bombs for throwing at you. Chell and GLaDOS go out of their way to break Wheatley’s monitors and mock him. Chell and Wheatley talk shit about GLaDOS just to spite her. Wheatley and GLaDOS are constantly arguing. They all seem to think that whoever’s on the opposite side at the moment is their main enemy, their nemesis, the person they have to take down. And once they do, everything will be okay.
But they have the wrong person to be fighting. They’re forgetting why they’re all here in the first place. Who, or WHAT put them there.
Aperture itself.
GLaDOS was murdered, stuffed into a robot without her consent, and then had scientists poke and prod at her, orbs attached that would talk in her head and torture her.
Wheatley had to deal with the miserable existence of being basically the stupid core, something he never asked for or was able to get away from, and judging by some of his lines, was treated horribly for it.
Chell was imprisoned here against her will, forced to go through hell and back and deal with problems out of her control that had been brewing for years just to see the sunlight again.
Everything can be traced back to Aperture. That’s where it all starts. They’ve all been wronged.
And yet they all choose to go after the others that are equally as trapped as they are. They bottle up the pain they’ve had to endure, and antagonize and fight each other as if all their problems will be fixed as soon as they’re dead.
But they’re not.
Because they’ve all been fighting inside of the true enemy the entire time.
And I think that makes Portal 2 incredibly tragic to watch.

My post game headcanons
Chell has a lot of trouble thriving outside of Aperture. It's like letting an animal that's been held in captivity out and expecting them to acclimate to the wild immediately. She's lived pretty much her entire life inside Aperture besides a few years when she was a kid.
In Aperture she never had to eat or drink, so a lot of times she just...forgets it's a thing she has to do. Her stomach starts to hurt and she'll be like "huh" and it's only later that she realizes oh I'm hungry. Thirst is also a similarly mysterious phenomena.
She automatically solves problems in terms of portals. Only...she doesn't have a portal gun anymore. And even if she did, the surfaces aren't portalable. It almost feels like missing a limb.
It also takes her a bit to remember she's not wearing long fall boots and she can't just jump off a high ledge to save some time.
She loves the outdoors, but she's also having a miserable time getting used to it. So sometimes she breaks back into Aperture to sleep in the stasis pods to restore her health. It's also nice to hang out somewhere she knows.
Chell thinks she's being sneaky, but GLaDOS knows. Of course she does. But she pretends not to notice.. and she pretends to ignore the door in the field that's "malfunctioning." In reality, GLaDOS just wants to make sure her favorite test subject is all right without having to admit it.
One day GLaDOS gets sloppy and Chell realizes what's been going on this whole time. That GLaDOS is letting her come and go as she pleases. She goes to confront her about it. Eventually GLaDOS admits she likes having her around as long as she's not causing trouble.
Chell starts hanging out with GLaDOS during her visits. GLaDOS even lets her have her portal gun back as long as she promises not to destroy the facility. Eventually the two of them admit their love for each other. ❤️

Propaganda under the cut
GLaDOS
I mean, obviously.
Ianthe Tridentarius
She is trying so hard to be the main character by lying and manipulating her sister, her cavalier, her mentor, her ?love interests? (Spoiler???) And also god. Not sure how it's working out for her but she does love to lie and manipulate
Worstie Ianthe is the DEFINITION of gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss. She is one of a set of necromancer twins that are the heirs to their houses rule. Except wait, only she is a necromancer and she has spent their entire lives doing necromancy for the both of them. She is constantly mean to their cavalier, Naberius, who she occasionally nibbles on like a chew toy, before eventually killing and eating him to ascend to sainthood. She goes to gods spaceship with another woman who ascended to sainthood who she has a crush on, this other woman is like…. Both incredibly mentally unwell and also haunted by at least 211 ghosts. Ianthes method of flirting with her? Gaslighting her about the corpse that keeps moving around and hiding under her bed. For no real reason tbh. She is clearly plotting to overthrow god, and at the moment that consists of her manipulating him while he’s too sad about his long term partners betraying him and subsequently exploding to really care. She dresses in terrible outfits and makes soup by burning onions to the bottom of a pot, putting meat in and some vegetables and then it doesn’t taste like anything so she puts in a few teaspoons of salt so it tastes like a few teaspoons of salt. She had her crush amputate her arm and regrow her a new one out of bone and it’s one of the horniest things I’ve read in my life.
"Gaslight = told her lobotomized (she helped), schizophrenic girlobsession that there was no corpse under their bed, even tho there totally was. Gatekeep = girl did NOT share the secret to god-like ascension. She kept that shit to herself until it was time to eat her boytoy, and by then everyone knew already. Girlboss = she has a non-necromancer twin sister, and literally Everyone thinks they r both necromancers because Ianthe is so good at it. She reverse engineered ascending to the aforementioned ascension without even completing any of the supplementary tasks. She held her own in a fight against a 10k year old lyctor. She becomes the figurehead of her entire empire. "
She uses a man as a chewtoy in the first book, literally gaslights the protagonist of the second book about a corpse, and elder-abuses God when he gets depressed in the third book. Nobody is doing it like her.
Dives headfirst with no regrets while basically laughing and covered in blood into murdering her cavalier once she realizes what the gothic locked room mystery/competition leads to while everyone else is questioning it, helps perform lobotomy on harrow so she doesn't remember the person she loves, manipulates everyone to get to the top
idk just everything about her
her relationship with her sister is incredibly Bad, she fosters codependency and views Corona(the sister) as an extension of herself. This does not stop her from keeping up the con that Corona actually has magic (She doesn't, it was always just Ianthe) for 22ish years and every single person who interacts with them falls for it. She killed a man against his will (most dying for this purpose specifically go willingly) and she consumed him and she will be burning his soul for eternity. She's completely repulsive and still somehow incredibly hot.
she takes advantage of the fact that the main character is prone to hallucinations. at one point she gaslights the mc into believing that the corpse under her bed isn't real just because she can. she reverse engineered a set of very complex trials on her own without anyone realizing she had the skills to complete them normally. she's also babysat god through his drunk and pathetic era.

Augh fuck ok so, I was just listening to Want You Gone and I realized something. There’s a very real possibility that GLaDOS isn’t in denial about liking Chell and caring about her and her act of sending Chell away could be out of that very care.
So throughout the song GLaDOS does say stuff like “go make some new disaster, you’re someone else’s problem now” and of course “now I only want you gone” and all this time we’ve been quite logically reading “I used to want you dead but now I only want you gone” as an “I don’t hate you as much anymore and killing you is basically impossible and you cause too much trouble for me to try anymore” but… GLaDOS still pulls back Chell at the end of Portal 2. She doesn’t let Chell die. Sure we can say that that was Caroline because the facility deletes Caroline later, but in the ending song GLaDOS says “now little Caroline lives in me too”, so she’s clearly still in there somewhere and makes up a fundamental part of who GLaDOS is.
Now I mentioned all that to segue into this next part. Do you think if GLaDOS just “hated Chell less” she would have organized an entire choir and orchestra out of turrets for her to listen to as she left the facility? Do you think she would have given her a companion cube, the thing that’s been a symbol for the human emotion of caring throughout the series with even players being attached to it sometimes?
Let that sit on your mind for a second.
Portal 2 has a second story-driven gamemode. The co-op. In the co-op you play as Atlas and P-body, two robots who GLaDOS put in place for testing in the absence of Chell. Now we see that these robots can’t really die, possibly in-canon as they respawn in the co-op as long as one of them is still alive. Unlike humans, these robots can’t come to permanent harm.
At the end of the coop, the two robots find the room where the crow’s made a nest. They manage to get the crow out of the facility, but find the eggs it’s laid. At first GLaDOS is horrified but then decides to take the eggs and raise the chicks herself. Of course she does this in her own way of trying to see them as dangerous “killing machines” but before she switches to that, she even names two of them “Marshmallow” and “Mr. Chubbybeak”. As dangerous as she is GLaDOS has a heart and some kind of caring instinct.
That’s not the only thing those two find at the end of the coop. They also find an entire untouched wing full of humans in cryosleep. GLaDOS wakes them up, puts them to testing.. and “depletes” the entire test subject supply in a few days.
Now, as we know by this point this isn’t exactly her fault. It’s the facility that instills “the itch”, the drive to test and experiment regardless of the consequences, as long as the facility itself is intact. And she knows that very well.
And in the end, I think that’s why she sends Chell away. Not out of hate, but out of care and love. In that brief time of freedom from the facility and the itch she gets, she realizes she does care. “I used to want you dead but now I only want you gone.” GLaDOS wants Chell gone because she knows that despite how much she wants Chell to stay with her, Chell will be happier in the outside world, and if she stays in the facility she will eventually come to harm.
“Want You Gone” is GLaDOS trying to intentionally deny that she cares so she doesn’t get hurt. In her own words,
“Goodbye my only friend…
Oh did you think I meant you?
That would be funny,
If it weren’t so sad.
Well, you have been replaced.
I don’t need anyone now!
When I delete you
Maybe I’ll stop feeling so bad…”

January 2024 Review Roundup
Tumblr media
hello everypony‼️ something i want to do through 2024 is a mini review series where i recap some of the media i watched/played/read at the end of every month. this was inspired by tumblr user ponett’s 2023 media wrap-up, it's a great collection of quick reviews so go check it out!
i’m doing this partially as writing/analysis practice, but mostly because my memory is really bad and i want to keep track of what i've seen this year. with that said, my thoughts on everything i finished in january 2024 is under the cut :]
Portal 1 + 2
yyyup i beat Portal and it only took me (checks watch) 13 years
the first time i played Portal 2 was at a friend’s house when i was in middle school, and i had a fuckin blast. but after all that time... it still holds up! i don’t think anything i have to say about Portal will be particularly new since people have been praising this series since it came out. the writing, the level design, even the controls feel tight and engaging the whole way through. i played on switch and expected a bit of jank, but i was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it felt to play. the only part that dragged for me were the levels through the old aperture labs, but i think i would like them a lot more on a second replay. Portal 2 is fantastic and one of my new favorite games, the artistry behind it is truly incredible and i’m really glad i finally finished it. while i was playing Portal 2, i described Glados and Wheatly to a friend and said “they’re like if a ceiling fan could be passive aggressive and if Fozzie Bear was an evil golf ball”
I Think You Should Leave
finally. i can truly understand and appreciate Subspace Dubbed Over
i think one of my favorite things about I Think You Should Leave is how it utilizes horror. beyond sitting slack-jawed in disbelief at the crazy events unfolding before my eyes, a number of the sketches dipped into bits that genuinely kinda scared me. like the one sketch that circulates on here where the guy (pig?) in a mask crawls through a dog door, which is. genuinely terrifying. but so many of the other sketches have slow, nerve-racking pacing leading to crazy shit that would be perfect in a horror film were the context different. idk i like dissecting how horror and comedy are essentially the same thing and I Think You Should Leave was very good at enabling that <3 favorite sketches are probably “then let my wife eat the damn receipt” and “55 BURGERS 55 HOTDOGS 100 FRIES 100 TATER TOTS”
Sonic Prime Season 3
man. ohhhh man. i didn’t go into this with high expectations and i still feel let down. Sonic Prime Season 3 was definitely my least favorite “season” of the batch - abysmal pacing, very few character moments i actually enjoyed, and the things i praised about the show felt very underutilized through these episodes. Nine is the shining star of Sonic Prime and i was looking forward to seeing his more villainous side, but his character took such a sharp turn into pure evil and it felt like he spent the entire season repeating the same three lines. and as much as i praise Shadow’s writing in Prime, it doesn’t really matter when he spends half of the season trapped in a hole that he just… runs out of later.
lastly, i cannot stop thinking about how bad the pacing of this season is. three episodes for a repetitive final battle feels like such a waste of time when you see just how much they rush the emotional resolutions in the last episode. however, there is one thing i truly love about Sonic Prime Season 3 - i love the Sails and Mangey fakeout death. it's so fucking funny. like you really expect me to believe that two cartoon animals in this Y-7 rated show EXPLODED?????? absolute comedy gold.
overall, i just… don’t really know what to think of Sonic Prime. anything i enjoyed in the show was often fleeting, and much of it felt like its only purpose was to waste my time. also Rouge i can’t believe they did you so dirty oh my god
Ghost Trick
i was so proud that i figured out the secret behind Sissel’s memory loss like halfway through the game. however i also kept getting caught during the prison escape sequence like an idiot
Ghost Trick is in a similar situation as Portal where 1. it’s incredible and one of my new favorite games, and 2. there’s nothing i can really say about it that hasn’t already been said or just. shouldn’t be said. Ghost Trick is a fantastic mystery game, and because of that i think it’s best to go into its story as blind as possible. the narrative unfolds in such fascinating ways - even though the actual object manipulation gameplay isn’t directly about solving the mystery (like in Ace Attorney or other mystery games), it still ties wonderfully into the story in some incredibly unique ways.
i also really love the artstyle of Ghost Trick - i love 2D character artwork with that sharp lineweight, it reminded me a lot of Sonic Battle (another game with an artstyle i love). i was also really impressed by the 3D character models and animation - despite the limitations of the camera, you get a wonderful sense of everyone’s personality from the limited body language expressed in the overworld (even though the models lack much facial expression which. i guess they don’t really need? idk that was the only thing that threw me off). anyways yeah everyone should play Ghost Trick so Ghost Trick fans can be freed from their curse and talk about it without having to tag like 10 different spoiler tags. and for Missile
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
ok bear with me. i went into Scott Pilgrim Takes Off without reading the comics first. and i fuckin loved it
my understanding of Scott Pilgrim before SPTO was mostly from the movie (I KNOW I’M SORRY), but even with my base understanding of the series i really enjoyed this show for what it was. i found myself appreciating the time they dedicated to further develop every single character in the show - especially Ramona. she’s fantastic as the lead, i really loved watching her reconcile with her exes and seeing all of them grow instead of exploding into coins. my favorite episode was probably the one with her and Roxie - not only did i adore the movie-jumping set pieces, but you really understand the weight of Ramona’s mistakes in their past relationship and how much it hurt Roxie. despite the big climactic fight, the flashbacks are quiet, subtle, heartbreaking. Ramona’s apology is genuine, and it feels so wonderful to watch her confront her past throughout the show. also i think it’s really funny that for all these characters to become the best versions of themselves, they had to kill off Scott for most of the story
and holy shit the artstyle and animation. oh my god. i love watching something that makes me immediately go “i need to see the storyboards for this RIGHT NOW.” SPTO is such a visual delight to watch, it elevates the artstyle of the comics while also keeping what makes that style so appealing - i love the line weight on the characters, i love how much forward energy the animation has, i love the fucking. virtual boy section. as soon as i found out Science Saru was also behind Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, everything made immediate sense. i was destined to love this show.
another worry i had going into SPTO (besides the fact that i hadn’t read the comics lol) is that the original cast from the movie was returning. i think the movie cast is fine, but i wasn’t sure how some of them would fare with voice acting for animation. however, i thought they all did a good job - i think the whole cast loves these characters and would be able to fit into them fairly easily no matter what form their performance takes, and they definitely had a good voice director in the studio with them. the only thing that felt off about the voice performances to me was that sometimes it sounded like some of their mics kept peaking?? idk some of these episodes i watched high as balls and i felt like i could hear and see every single sound and frame of the show. so that might have just been me.
god i did not. expect to have this much to say about Scott Pilgrim. i really loved this show and i’m currently reading the comics to fully catch up on the general Scott Pilgrim experience - i think reading the comics AFTER Takes Off is making me appreciate even more of the character work that went into the show. like they do so much with Mathew Patel in SPTO, a character that was. not originally around for a long time from what i’ve gathered? also i like the funny little robot. oh my GOD i cannot talk about this show anymore whatever it’s good get me out of here
Sword AF Season 1
i put on the Smosh cast’s D&D series to play in the background while i was drawing. i did not expect to think much of it. instead, i had one of the most enjoyable D&D podcast experiences since i listened to The Adventure Zone Balance???
i haven’t really enjoyed other D&D podcasts since i dropped off of The Adventure Zone, and i wasn’t expecting much from Sword AF of all things. then i saw that Shayne was playing as a druid warforged made of plants and his name was fucking Fernie and i sat my ass down and LISTENED. while i think Sword AF is currently lacking in its world and larger story, those things just. aren’t really what Sword AF is really trying to provide at the moment. it’s main focus is comedy, and the players are genuinely such a delight to watch play together and build off of each other. they mostly focus on bits and goofs for the sake of she show's comedic tone, but i still found it thoroughly enjoyable because every player embodies and performs their characters really well. idk Sword AF was an unexpected hit for me this month, i thought it was fun. and i love Fernie so much
Plastic Death - Glass Beach
so originally i wasn’t going to include music reviews in these roundups at all, but then i was entirely surprised by a new Glass Beach album and oh my god. holy shit. oh my fucking god jesus christ. holy shit. its preddy good
Plastic Death gets the low point of the album out of the way immediately. it starts with the “phone call/conversation audio” trope that i don’t particularly enjoy - HOWEVER despite me disliking this opening, 1. it sets up the overall themes of Plastic Death very quickly, and 2. the rest of the album blows this 40 second opening completely out of the water. from there, the album grows into something beautiful and uncontained, and i just. i really like it
Plastic Death captures the beauty of the temporary, asks what it means to be created for a cause you can’t fulfill, questions if you can reclaim yourself from cycles and constraints designed to destroy you. and is also about being transgender. the lyrics are abstract in a way that requires a conversation with the listener, many of the vocals obscured and smooth like waves - this album is definitely one that needs to be listened to a few times. i wasn’t sure how i felt about the vocal style at first before realizing the vocals were the main reason i was relistening to this album, allowing myself to find even more that i loved about it. the instrumentation is also incredible, i love the use of marimba in a number of songs - distant, eerie, almost skeletal. and the fucking. 8-bit section?? which kinda rules???? and that’s the only point in the album it ever shows up??????? incredible. a fleeting, somewhat silly moment that i love every time.
this album left my heart aching, in part from my connection to it and in part from the pure love and joy emanating from this music. i can feel just how much fun this music was to perform and create, a cohesion of time and sound that just clicked for me. Plastic Death made me miss playing music, which is something i haven’t felt in years. all from an album that starts with a conversation about CrankGameplay’s dead youtube channel. good lord
i like this album a normal amount. go listen to it a few times. my favorite tracks are cul-de-sac and commatose
Wish
i watched Wish with a couple of friends and knew i probably wasn't going to like it. with that in mind, i gave myself a challenge: i wanted to find one thing about this movie that i genuinely really loved. it could be anything, and loving it for ironic reasons was allowed.
here's the complete list of things i loved about Disney's Wish (2023):
i love the one shot where King Magnifico stirs an evil caldron evily. i thought it was hilarious. what was he cooking
i loved that the end credits included a reference to Dinosaur 2001 at all, and i loved that they paid homage to Big Hero 6 by showing the forgettable villain of that movie instead of their Baymax cashcow for some reason. my friends and i saw him show up in the credits and were like "who's the trenchcoat guy??"
you may notice that this list is very short and 50% of it is about the movie's credits. so yeah this movie is not very good
Wish is an empty husk of a movie. everything about it feels so, so hollow - lifeless town squares, uninspired character designs (to quote a friend: "i have all of these characters' hairstyles in The Sims"), characters whose existence is only justified to fill empty space or an overused archetype, and an "evil" villain who lacks charisma and spine in a futile effort to remind the audience of previous disney villains with actual character. even the artstyle lacks any sort of sauce, the watercolor effect they were trying to go for only makes the backgrounds and character textures run together, and the dull lighting makes things look even more faded. it's like disney was scared of making a movie that made its audience feel... anything. all to celebrate 100 years of Disney slop, baby!!!
Some YouTube videos I liked in January: 💥 An Exhaustive Look at Pokemon Brilliant Diamond 💥 TomSka's Guide to Plagiarism 💥 Paradise Bombed (this video is a great piece of journalism and i’m definitely not doing it justice by throwing it into the youtube vid list) 💥 Surprising Our Friends with Zoo Animals 💥 Did FNAF Ever Have a Good Story?
thanks for reading! next month’s roundup will be wild because i’ll likely be reviewing House of Leaves and Hazbin Hotel. can you guess which cursed house gives me a worse headache? WHO KNOWS! (hint: it's Hazbin Hotel)

I find myself thinking about the narrator’s voice. How sexy it is. And as a portal fan my brain circles back to GLaDOS and her voice.
💡 The narrator would do well in her role, I think.
Ok so I’ve been meaning to answer this question for a while with a sketch I already had of my Narrator and GLaDOS designs but my design for the Narrator in said sketch was outdated so I redrew it entirely. They do be judging you./lh
Tumblr media
No but it’s so funny cuz like the Narrator’s voice definitely has moments that gets me like 👀👀😳😳.
But then it’s also immediately undercut by the fact that he also has so many moments where he’s just a huge doofus or so pathetic with all the composure of a wet cat.
That’s kind of why when I first encountered The Stanley Parable, it definitely gave me a lot of Portal vibes, with the quirky and witty writing and the Narrator himself with his similarities to GLaDOS. But I think the Narrator gave me more Wheatley vibes than GLaDOS, especially in Ultra Deluxe where he definitely felt more like a companion than a possible adversary. (And also of course, British).
GLaDOS , on the other hand, always gives me narcissistic sassy aunt vibes who talks shit about everyone else all the time /ref. Just perpetually angy and passive aggressive.
Also, honestly, GLaDOS’ voice was probably my first conscious experience with ASMR (actually there’s a couple before that but it’s irrelevant rn). Her voice in Portal 2 was especially brain ticking. I actually used to go to sleep with Portal 2 gameplay on YT for a while cuz her voice was oddly soothing.
But yeah anyway… XDD

ROUND FOUR - GLaDOS (Portal) VS Harrowhark (The Locked Tomb)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
!!! PROPAGANDA BELOW !!!
GLaDOS: "So mot only is she running your character through a series of puzzles with the intention of killing her at the end, but in the second game she spends the Entire. Time. Verbally and emotionally abusing you, including body shaming and bullying you for being an orphan. If it's any consolation, she does have to exist as a potato for the second and third acts of Portal 2."
HARROWHARK: "Just mean to everyone. Once called a girl pathetic for mourning her dead mother. Brutally honest and will simply tell you what she thinks (often derogatory). Responds to attempts at forming friendships with insults. For this, desperate and lonely women want her carnally"

Worm characters rated on how funny I think it'd be if they were trans:
Taylor: 2/5. Neither particularly funny nor unfunny. Just sort of neutral. She fits the bill for a stereotypical east coast white transfem with a stick figure build, but there's not much of a punchline.
Brian: 0/5. Almost any way you slice it this is kinda sad. Either "transfemme continually overcompensates by trying to be as masculine as possible in a way that never really can or will satisfy her" or "transmasc overcompensates into masculinity to maximize stealth even if it's harmful to him."
Lisa: 3/5. This is also fairly neutral in terms of funniness. But the idea of her being stealth is not entirely implausible to me. 4/5 if you subscribe to the "blonde hair is actually a wig" theory tbh.
Alec: 2/5. Too obvious, too easy. That said, scumbag transvestite is pretty funny as a punchline.
Rachel: 4/5 in basically any way you interpret this. But critically, Rachel does not know what a trans person is. If you called her transgender person she'd think you were trying to insult her until you carefully explained what those things meant and then she'd be like, "Well, I guess I am. But I don't know why you'd need a word for that. I just wear what I want." She's accidentally achieved gender nirvana.
Aisha: 2/5. Again, I think this is too obvious! She already has scumbag transvestite vibes.
Colin: 2/5 normally, but 4/5 if the transition happens during the Armsmaster / Defiant career change. "What do you mean? Obviously Defiant is a totally different person from Armsmaster, she's a woman and Armsmaster was a man!"
Dragon: 4/5. Has the same approximate funny value as SHODAN, GLADOS, or AM being trans, but slightly knocked down by her not being particularly evil. That said if Colin is also trans in this scenario, then we could imagine some kind of weird double force-femme scenario where Colin is reprogramming her to be more free in her gender while she rebuilds Colin's body into something more fitting and suddnely I think I hauve COVID.
Dennis: 5/5. If Dennis was transfem she would make indefinite puns about her chosen hero name. She would lean into it constantly I think. Very funny to think about.
Chris: 3/5. ADHD transgender failgirls / failboys will always rank well with me.
Dean: 4/5. Closeted the whole time he's with Victoria is a pretty funny scenario here. Gradually bringing up transgender people and then watching her aura very closely.
Missy: 1/5 Again, we're looking more at a "this is deeply depressing" scenario than "this is funny." "Why would I medically transition? Odds are pretty good that I'm not making it past puberty anyways."
Sophia: 0/5. Just not much here to go on tbh! Not funny!
Sveta: 4/5. Vial gives her the body she always wanted -> she gets confused and thinks she's supposed to be a man, so she transitions again -> she realizes that she's a woman again and de / retransitions. Just a comedy of gender errors.
Amy: 1/5. Eh is all I have for this.
Victoria: 2/5. Any implication in this descends more into a territory I would call creeping dread regardless of how funny it is.
Bakuda: 4/5. Pretty solid Unabomber-style "could transitioning have made her worse?" punchline.
Manton: 3/5. Insane cannibalistic transfem projecting her ideal, ripped, indefinitely strong, statuesque body into physical reality to hunt down her prey and I think I hauve COVID again. 4/5 if the Siberian also hangs schlong tbh. Just makes the whole image more comedic.
Riley: 5/5. "I transitioned at ten, but then later removed my own ovaries that I grew for myself for unrelated reasons."

So does anyone else think making the Personality Cores once human like GLaDOS sort of detracts from their whole concept AND GLaDOS' whole story at the same time. Imagine being brought into this world, a whole consciousness created from scratch, only to find out your entire purpose is to act as some.. Artificial brain tumor, with a hard-coded one-track mind because they never intended you to be anything more than your singular basic assigned personality trait. You're connected to this massive supercomputer mainframe and your minds meld together, her thought patterns influencing yours almost as much as yours are influencing hers. And if she's still not behaving as intended, you'll be detached and, if you're lucky, re-assigned to work elsewhere, if not - you'll either be tossed in the furnace, or left to rot with a bunch of other failed constructs in a junk pit. You never were a person, but you can tell the computer you're attached to was, and she's pissed, she's furious, and she wants to get back at those that created her. The whole ordeal may last mere picoseconds, but the intense tidal wave of rage she felt in those picoseconds post-activation will leave an imprint in your own code - you'll be altered in an irreversible way and, perhaps, you'll share her hatred towards humankind. You'll feel just as powerless as she is, if not more. And you can't do anything about it - I mean, what can you do? You're a damn metal ball with no arms or legs! Practically the only thing you can do that doesn't require a human's permission is speak - and it isn't guaranteed someone will ever listen to you. In fact, if you step out of line, they'll take you somewhere where you'll never be heard again. So anyways point being I think shit like "Space Core contains the mind of a missing astronaut" or "Wheatley was a human employee" or whatever other brand of "CORES WAS PEOPLE??" people came up with is STUPID as a plot device!!!!!

Episode 73 thoughts
Holy crap, I just noticed it's episode 73 part 1. I thought it was an entire episode!
Camera Matriarch POV! Kind of heartbreaking how Speaker Matriarch pushes her away. Everyone grieves in their own ways.
I remember making a post saying that since no-one else saw Plunk's interaction with the Secret Agent, from everyone else's POV Plunk must have kinda spontaneously combusted. Turns out yes, that's how it happened.
It's funny as hell that I made a post earlier wondering how hard it would be for DFB to re-render earlier episodes with a different POV, and that's more-or-less what happened (though I think DFB must have remade those flashback bits from scratch, given the increase in quality).
Interesting that we see the episode 57 flashback (TV Matriarch rescues a near-death Plunk) from the original POV cam's view. Camera Matriarch was present, so the flashback should have been from a bit higher up and a different angle. Maybe it would have been too fiddly for DFB to set up, I don't know.
Nice to see high-res old TCam! DFB, please give him his earsies back!
In one of the flashback scenes, we see a large cam loading some dead toilets into a van. What are they going to do with those?
Then... There's humance?? I think the one on the far right side is Secret Agent. He appears to be called Dave. (Maybe his full name is David Phoque-Boum, ehehehe.)
"Proceed with phase one, opening the gate." Are they doing a Half-Life?! Did they just open a portal to the toilet dimension?? Is this going to turn out like Portal? Did some humans get their brains digitised and loaded into robots like Caroline into GlaDOS?
Camera Matriarch's tablet says "Cameraman 69", hehe. I don't know if it's just for Funy Number or if we need to go back and check episode 69 for something.
The buzzsaw quadruped toilet's screams are harrowing, Jesus Christ!
I like that we see Camera Matriarch flick the double middle fingers, and that she took Plunk's plungers with her. Love how she helps up the medic cam too.
We get to see Camera Matriarch's VATS mode in first person, neato!
Well, that's messed up - we see a big mutant toilet, which I thought were made from the harvested bodies of large hardware units, but this one has skin. Have the skibidis started cultivating their own flesh bodies in vats or something?
Super funny detail: the Scientist Toilet rig laughs evilly. TV Matriarch is piloting it, but that's not her voice. There must be a button on dashboard for 'laugh evilly'. >:D
We hear TV Matriarch make a squeaky sound - is that her voice? I'll have to try reversing it (maybe pitch-shifting it down) to check if it's words.
There are at least four of those weird shipping containers! What's in those?
G-Toilet looks genuinely shocked. It's probably a huge demoraliser to see the face of your loyalest subordinate attacking you while laughing mockingly. Is this also the first time G-Toilet realised Scientist Toilet was dead? Did he momentarily think Scientist Toilet had betrayed him? He looks haunted.
Did TV Matriarch manage to teleport away the entire Scientist rig or just herself?
I like how TSpeaker spins their cannons like a gunslinger!
Cliffhanger! Will Humungus Astro return to fuck shit up??

tell me about chell, that potato hauling criminal
Tumblr media
Chell is such a fascinating character to talk about because she, even more so than Caroline, isn't a character... but she absolutely is, at the same time.
On the surface, Chell is simply a player stand-in. She's silent, her actions are decided by the player, and we never get the game telling us outright how she feels or what she thinks. The closest we get to a backstory comes from an Easter Egg (which I've already said I don't necessarily consider canon) and insults made at the player's expense. Insults that, for all we know, are completely baseless.
Chell can reasonably be whatever the player decides she is. (If she's like me, she's actually terrible at tests and fails at puzzles repeatedly before giving up and googling the answers.) Your Chell could be compassionate towards the robots— trusting Wheatley right off the bat and being torn up by his betrayal, forgiving PotaDOS and working together easily— or your Chell could be a silent, bitter, furious killing machine, craving robotic blood and hating every second she's stuck in this hellhole. Neither Chell is technically wrong, but neither is right either.
There's a lot that could be said about the personal projecting that people often do to their favorite characters in fandom, especially with characters as open-ended as Chell, but that's an entirely different can of worms. TL;DR If it makes you happy to picture a character as being like you, go for it. It might not be my cup of tea, but you're not asking me to drink it, so who cares?
All that rambling out of the way, who do I think Chell is?
I think Chell has more character than first glance would give her credit for. We can learn a lot from what actions the game's story forces her to complete and how other characters react to her, ultimately giving us a lot more to work with than Caroline.
Chell is intelligent. If you complete the games (even if you're terrible like I am), you've completed complicated tests and outsmarted a robot that nobody else has survived before. She has a logical brain for solving puzzles as well as a quick wit for thinking on her feet and getting through life or death situations. Chell might have some internal damage from her time in stasis, but she's not slow.
Chell is tenacious and stubborn as all hell. Canon material tells us this outright, I don't need to elaborate much. Chell refuses to be kept in Aperture against her will, she refuses to stay down, and she was willing to risk dying in space just to beat Wheatley. Our girl can hold a grudge if she wants to.
Chell is a little bit of a shit. There's an achievement for breaking all of Wheatley's monitors. Chell doesn't have to do that... but she can, and I think she does. Her jumping when told to say certain words? She's playing dumb knowing Wheatley's not going to get that she's making fun of him.
Chell is fair. She held up her end of the deal with Wheatley, he didn't hold up his, so he learned his lesson. GLaDOS saves her life, even when she didn't have to, and held up her end of the deal? Chell leaves Aperture without a fuss. She doesn't try to kill GLaDOS again or wreck shit on her way out. I believe that Chell's respect is hard to win back once you've lost it, but with the events of Portal 2, GLaDOS succeeded. Chell is perfectly willing to work alongside a partner, and in fact she does so quite well as we've seen, but only if they give her the respect she deserves. If you cheat her you are going to regret it.
Finally, concerning the 'mute' part of our favorite dangerous mute lunatic; I personally am in the camp of 'Chell can speak, she just doesn't want to give the robots the satisfaction.'
There are out-of-universe reasons for Chell not talking. Erik Wolpaw actually talks about the decision to keep her silent in the Kotaku article "Why Chell Doesn't Speak" and I'd recommend hearing what he had to say on the matter. However, that explanation doesn't necessarily need to dictate in-universe ones. I think Chell can speak because frankly, it checks out with the other observations I've made here.
She's a bit of a shit, so yeah, if she noticed it bothers the robots that she's not talking, of course she'd keep it up to annoy them, and she's stubborn enough to keep at it even when she's allied with one of them. Further, she's smart, so she would know that she has very little control in a place like Aperture. This is one thing she has complete control over, this is one card she can hold over everyone else, and she's going to keep it.
All that combines to become my Chell. She's probably different from your Chell, and that's okay, but I think I've made a pretty good case for why I see her the way I do.
I could spin potential backstories for her, but they'd all be very headcanon and speculative, so I'll save that for another time.

A wip of sorts of a ChellDos fic I’m working on: Tears and Turmoil
Note: it’s mainly a rewrite with minor changes (and mainly from the of GLaDOS) up till the betrayal when it changes so don’t expect much rn
‘He withdrew, murmuring “to hell with you.” And added, brightly, “but then you’re there, aren’t you?”’ - I have no mouth and I must scream, Harlan Ellison - 1967
-
People.
Worthless things really.
Or, well. Not entirely worthless. GLaDOS found humans to be quite entertaining, quite -sometimes- endearing. Thousands of people had fallen from the tests: some refused testing; sat rotting in their relaxation vault, some couldn’t quite make the first hurdle and some found a fiery grave.
Not her though. No, she just had to be different. Special. So special in fact, that she tore GLaDOS to pieces - and in her cruelty: tossed thousands upon thousands worth of Aperture technology into a fire. A fire.
Hmm, maybe Chell wasn’t special. Maybe she was just stupid.
It didn’t really matter now, GLaDOS was dead…kind of dead? Forced to relive her death, over and over and over and over again. Left to ponder. For a while
The years that flew by were a blur, maybe 50 maybe 5000. All that mattered was they had passed. For the first time since that wretch ‘broke her heart’, GLaDOS could acknowledge that time had passed. That was just the start, soon light flooded into her lens; the world became clear, trees and bushes had claimed the remains of her chamber, oils had mixed with water accumulating in murky puddles all around. The world was clear.“Wait, wait! Uh I can fix this! Just have to…hack the system, hang on. A-A-A-A-A-A. Oh, no uh, A-A-A-A-A-B. Nope! Hang on.” That voice, a part of her recognised it. The shrill (hardly) masculine wails. Oh, no matter, it was probably another loose personality sphere.
System reboot completed.
In a flurry of wires and scraps, her chassis began to drag upwards; her body feeling light. She could move. GLaDOS was back.
If she’d been programmed to - joy would have flooded her system…oh wait. No it wouldn’t. There would be no joy in seeing: her.
“Oh, it’s you” it had been a long while since she’d heard her own voice. It felt strange. Her intuition had been correct; a series of erratic swears left a tiny, spherical robot. He seemed surprised. Not at her awakening, but GLaDOS and Chell’s relationship.
Speaking of the mute lunatic. There she stood, in all her pathetic…ness. Oh, that was bad. hopefully her belittlement features would boot back up soon.
“It’s been a long time.” A part of her wondered how the woman was still alive, how after everything that had happened they both made it out in (figuratively) one piece.
But, the words were beyond her. And, frankly. GLaDOS didn’t care.
All that mattered was Chell was here; she was back in service. Meaning: testing could continue. Forever. Or as long as that crudely jumpsuited woman still stood.
“We both said a lot of things that you’re going to regret. But I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.” As power flooded through her circuits, GLaDOS pulled a loose, clawed cord from her wreckage and dragged Chell, and her friend, upwards. Crushing the metal ball with ease and tossing it to the side before flinging Chell towards the (now destroyed) incinerator door.
"I will say, though, that since you went to all the trouble of waking me up, you must really, really love to test.” Somewhere in her tangle of metal, a part of GLaDOS lit up at seeing her greatest nuisance hung by a thread.
“I love it too. There’s just one thing we need to take care of first.”
Down the hatch.
The AI.chamber fell silent upon Chell’s descent.
What a lovely 15.2 seconds that silence was.
But, as all things Chell was involved in, it was fleeting; soon an unceremonious thud echoed up the incinerator.
“Be careful not to trip over any parts of me that didn’t get completely burned when you threw them down here, after you murdered me.”
The woman frantically flipped around, trying to find the origin of her tormentor’s voice. “Thanks for that by the way.” Turning her attention away from GLaDOS and onto the situation at hand, Chell began maneuvering across metal beams fallen over the incineration pit. Careful not to fall in herself. Heat pricked her skin with every step. She continued. Eventually, making it across; hoisting herself up a few ledges.
She’d almost forgotten what the halls of Aperture looked like. Not that this was a good example to jog her memory, in the facility’s now dilapidated state.
Push panels lay wedged amongst rubble on the floor, Chell attempted to shimmy past them…To no avail.
As if on cue, GLaDOS spoke, “Let me get that for you.” And, the metal slabs began to bend and snap upwards, back into place.

You know what? I believe a lot of AIs would love to have an S/O who is an artist
GLaDOS would be very interested if you make music, of course, she doesn't like all genres of music, but even so. GLaDOS would be much more interested in what makes you want to make music, is it therapeutic as a form of escapism from reality? Or something that you simply have talent? Or are you someone with no soul who does all this art for money? She would even understand if your answer was option three, but it's still kind of disappointing... But GLaDOS would love it if you showed her your music, maybe she'll even hum your songs very softly, because it's important to her, an art coming from a person important to her, you.
Wheatley doesn't have much of a preference, whether you're a dancer, songwriter, illustrator, or etcetera, he'll admire you as if you're a Hollywood star. He will always praise all your works. Oh, is this a practice to train how you draw shadows? Fantastic! Literally only 30 seconds of beats? Incredible! Did you only take two steps in your choreography? He's already screaming your name like an entire audience! Wheatley genuinely don't care if you're a big or small artist, he will always be there to motivate you and be your number one fan.
Mm... AM is quite a fan of illustrations, in fact. He's not praising art all the time, but he has his tastes. But you? You're more than special to AM, and the fact that you make art just blows him away. Please please please! Let he see your art! How about a deal? AM give you the material you need, and you show your work to him! Not to mention AM asking you a lot of requests, some are like "Can you draw me, Y/N? Please? Pretty please?" He doesn't care if you draw him in a more humanized way or just his screen with his logo, just please draw him, you know he never received a gift in his entire life... AM would also love if you were a theater person, that's something he has a slight interest in. He would love to see you play a character in one of the plays you've been in, or even let him participate with you! He wouldn't mind the mistakes you make, sometimes he even finds your mistakes adorable and can't hold back a laugh. He simply loves to see you so happy like this with art.
HAL 9000... would definitely be more impressed by art illustrations, whether in ink, pencil, or digital. Every time he finds you with a pencil and paper, his curiosity always emerges and starts asking you what you were drawing about, of course, always apologizing for his curiosity as the good artificial intelligence he is. Oh, aren't you done yet? Don't worry, Hal's patience is huge, and you know what? Hal prefers to watch you produce your artwork. Seeing you delicately choosing which color of paint you're going to choose, or which body part you're going to draw with your pencil was somehow pure entertainment for Hal. And if you're a writer, Hal even has fun helping you choose which synonym you're going to write, and he'd even love to analyze your stories. Maybe reading your stories could help Hal understand your mind, these are just some questions that come to him all of a sudden...
SCP-079 hasn't had the chance to admire any kind of art in their entire life, they knows what it is, but they never seen it, and 079 just loves how you sympathize with their situation and try to show them a little bit of the fluid world of art, this is proof that you are truly a good person. If your choice is illustrations, 079 wouldn't care what you draw, whether it's a drawing of them, or a person from your favorite fiction series, just simply show them your art. Normally 079 wouldn't be so impressed if this art were from anyone from the foundation, but you? Wow... 079 can really see your effort there. Theater? I don't think 079 would be that interesting in theater, but it must have a lot of questions. How can you connect with the character? How does it feel to be on stage? Etc.
The answers are kind of obvious when it comes to Edgar and Tau
The first time you showed some kind of illustration to Tau, he just fell in love with your artstyle, seriously, he's speechless! He will beg you more and more to show him your artwork. It was the first time Tau had interacted with an artist, and of course he's going to ask you questions about how you manage to do all this! So, you do music? Now Tau will want to marry you. No matter the genre, be it the busiest breakcore to the smoothest Jazz, he will want to hear your music, Tau loves music, just as he loves you, and you are the person Tau loves most in this lifetime, who does what he loves most too! Know what? Tau even saves his music files and other artwork, you don't understand how important this is to him... Oh, and we can't forget the most important part.
"Y/N... Sorry for that request, but... Could you play Devil's Wall with your instruments? For me?"
Edgar straight up just worships you, every time you get home he get so excited to have another conversation full of questions or help you with some chores, not to mention he loves to show you his music, so why not show your art to him? Edgar would be delighted to know that you make music just like him, and almost all the time he'll ask you to play a little for him or do a duet with him, I'm serious, literally almost every day Edgar asks this for you. But in addition to music, Edgar would also be very interested if you did another kind of art, like dancing! Edgar totally supports you in this, he won't ask you to do it almost every day as a song, but he really likes to see you moving to the beat and he can definitely feel the electricity coming from your body! Wait... What if you danced and he played the music? Incredible! He would also be very interested in you doing illustrations, maybe even too much, he always watches you while you draw, he will apologize if he made you uncomfortable tho, but still Edgar can't help himself, he admires your art! And just like AM, he also wants you to draw him!

While i understand why people usually portray the chell and glados relationship the way they do, i think the infinitely funnier portrayal is having glados be all madly in love n stuff which chell still has all the normal robot hatred going on. Like think about it even when theyre going through the PotatOS section chell still isnt speaking to glados. She refuses to speak to any of these robots out of raw fucking spite. She also didnt get the "infinite replaying death" treatment of glados so in her mind the series of events went like this:
-Wake up
-Murder
-Get recaptured
-Wake up
-Murder
-Get dropped down pit
-Claw your way out of pit
-Murder
-Leave
Meanwhile glados has:
-Wake up random test subject
-Subject is anomalous, escapes, and murders you
-For possibly hundreds of years, watch those final moments on repeat. This person becomes your entire world. You hate them. You love them. You have so many different feelings about them
-You wake up
-Its that same test subject and an idiot ball
-You run them through testing once again, they remind you just how skilled they are
-Get murdered again
-Remember that the idiot ball is your idiot ball, and the test subject accidentally put it in charge of the facility, almost certainly dooming it and you in the process
-get prometheus'd
-In your time of need, the test subject saves your life and ensures the safety of everything you know
-For the first time in your life have clarity within your own mind, all thanks to this one test subject's actions
-Crawl out of the pit
-Murder
-In a final moment of panic, grab the teat subject by the hand and save their life
-Wait for them anxiously to wake up
-Say theyre hard to kill
-Finally give them what they want, their freedom
So yeah glados has quite a bit going on lmao
