First, disclaimer, I do not know sign language. I just look things up online and draw them. Sorry if stuff is inaccurate. |D

Second, hoooooooooo boi. Have you guys who are rottmnt fans read The Aftermath by Starrcrossrose on AO3? 8′D I started reading it because I wanted more fluff, but excuse me as I stamp this as the very first story I’ve ever read that legitimately made me cry. Not in the oh no I feel things but I’m fine an hour later. But I actually had water tears falling from my eyeballs. And I just sat at my desk for an hour or so feeling like my day was full. It was amazing.

That, and my interest/enjoyment with drawing sign language, and the idea for the change in how Leo’s name is signed in this was my motivation for drawing it. It took a lot longer than I thought it would 8 | 

This is from the end of Chapter 12, and he’s actually wearing a hoodie and a bio hazmat suit in the scene, but I wanted to have him fully visible for this, so I elected to not draw those. Also I forgot he was wearing a hoodie under the suit |D oops.

She's actually selectively mute, since the reason it struck her in the first place is from the trauma response of The Everything, and she does start move away from it when she's older (but not completely). She has some evil monologuing to do down the line, after all :d

Buuut in the meantime, she sticks with writing! She's already a little miffed at her friends' reactions about her decision to it...which is also why she double-checked with Lloyd to get his opinion about it.

western, native english speaking internet needs to be more normal about broken english. like genuinely. there are tons of posts talking about how english is such a hard language and how non-native speakers "shouldn't apologise for not speaking english fluently because they are making an effort"

and then when we turn around there are posts and youtube videos making fun of broken english. "this story is so hard to read ugh this is such poor prose I don't know what the author meant half the time" well maybe the author doesn't speak english so well. maybe the author never had to write long prose in english before. maybe the author wanted to share something they love with a wider community and the easiest way to go about it is writing in english because that is the most commonly spoken language in fandoms. maybe the author is trying their best and you are mocking them for it not being Good Enough for your standards as someone raised with the language the author started learning two years ago

it's not even in writing, really. it's the mocking of accents or the incorrect tenses and strange grammar, the strangely worded set of instructions posted online

everyone always talks inclusion and how this should be fine but the moment they actually see someone not do well and don't have it spelled out to them that the author isn't a native speaker? the internet turns to ridicule. and that needs to stop

I’m so glad that we are having ASL discourse and discussions in the House of Wax (2005) fandom.

Bottom line, you can still write your fanfics and make your comics and headcanons with Vincent signing! I can’t really stop you anyway. But believe me, I love to see it as much as the next person I’m sure. Just make sure that you are putting proper research into sign language, and deaf culture by extension.
