Pool Party! (E-2)
These birds are loosely grouped by their associations with water, and because I didn't want the family BR to get too big. Keep your eyes peeled- there may be someone here who got a little lost, but we don't discriminate here!

BOTD: Whistling Heron

Whistling Heron (Syrigma sibilatrix)
There are two subspecies of Whistling Heron; the Southern (S. s. sibilatrix) and the Northern (S. S. fostersmiithi). They nest alone, which is unlike most heron species, which nest in colonies called 'heronries'. Also unlike most herons, Whistling Herons care for their young after they leave the nest.

Creature Awaits #193
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry.  Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Happy New Year! The Greeks were thought to have based the mythological Phoenix on the now extinct Bennu Heron (Ardea bennuides), so to kick off 2023, it feels fitting to feature a variety of gorgeous "living phoenixes" - extant herons from around the world. - 💕

The Whistling Heron
Scientific Name: Syrigma sibilatrix
Region: One subspecies resides across Columbia and Venezuela, the other further southeast in South America
Size: About 1'6"-2' (~53cm-64cm) tall (...weirdly, I can't find anywhere that lists its wingspan....)
Interesting Notes: This species is named for some of the several calls it uses to communicate with its family. In French, this heron is known as the "Héron flûte-du-soleil" meaning the "Flute of the Sun Heron"...pretty. : )

[Sorry these updates are running a little slow—chemo kicked my ass this week]
You decide that you are not quite ready to meet possibly hostile denizens of the labyrinth, and quickly douse your lantern. In the ensuing darkness, you see the faint glow of a light in the direction of the voices.
Without being asked, Jimmy hops between the bars in the direction of the voices. You briefly see his silhouette, black on dark gray, then he vanishes into the gloom.
You wait. The argument reaches a crescendo, assuming it’s actually an argument and not just one of those languages with a lot of aggressive emphasis. Someone spits a final phrase and you hear footsteps and see the light coming in your direction. A moment later Jimmy lands on your shoulder and presses a wing down.
The pressure is negligible but the message isn’t. You hastily flatten yourself against the wall below the level of the bars. Striped shadows flare on the opposite wall, then pass by. You breathe again.
After about five minutes of silence, you creep the rest of the way down the hall, until the floor drops away. (You tell yourself that no one is watching you in the dark. You tell yourself that very firmly.) Kneeling, you grope around and detect a further flight of stairs leading down. You go partway down, far enough to hopefully be hidden from the rooms above the sunken hallway, and re-light your lantern.
To your great relief, you’re on stairs made of perfectly ordinary concrete with the occasional scribble of graffiti. Jimmy lets out a relieved whistle.
“I couldn’t see much,” he says, “but I didn’t like the way they looked. They were too long.”
Long?
“Um. Long. Tall. Stretched?” Interpretive dance has its limits. Jimmy flaps his wings in frustration. “Look, boss, if humans were like normal birds, those guys would be herons or storks or egrets or something. Stretched. And pointy. And I didn’t like it.” He fluffs his feathers. “Sorry I can’t explain it better. But it was pretty dark, so maybe I was just seeing things.”
You reassure Jimmy that he explained it just fine, though secretly you’re a bit baffled by “stretched and pointy.” You share the remaining half of the open granola bar with him. Then you stand up, brush off crumbs, and try to figure out what to do next.

Blue Birds of Happiness
Blue is an extra-fun color for birds to be, because, as you may have heard, it is not created by a pigment. Blue feathers (and the blue scales on butterfly wings, and the blue irises of some humans) are structural, meaning that the color is created by the physical properties of the living tissue, which are arranged in such a way that they reflect the short wavelengths of blue light. Often this is paired with a dark pigment which absorbs other colors of light and makes the blue 'pop'. Look at all the tints and shades they can make!

I'd lowkey love an edit of the main toa boys to Sabrina Jordan's "Hazel Eyes". I mean-
"Blue as the wings of a heron in the night
Like the rising of the tides on the shores of isle skye"- Jim
"They gleam evergreen, winds a' whistling in the pines
Like a castle-crawling vine, like the grassy glen of lyon"- Toby
"And rich as the mud after rain upon the ground
They're a whiskey hue of brown, braided river running wild"- Krel
"I fell astray, but in you I have found
That I am ever bound to your hazel eyes"- Douxie
like im just sayin
And verse 2 could work for the two main ladies-
"Deep as the sea where the ocean meets the shore
Where I met them once before, on the emerald cliffs of Moher"- Claire
"Bright as the light setting fire to the North
Rising high beyond the morn, laying shadows on the floor"- Aja

"I wasn’t born of a whistle, or milked from a thistle at twilight No; I was all horns and thorns, sprung out fully formed, knock-kneed and upright" — Joanna Newsom, "Sawdust and Diamonds"
"My voice is not the liquid waves The perfect rings 'round a heron's legs My voice a straight garroting wire A stolen mile of fingerprints Peeled up quiet from their dunes Captured and re-spooled as ruin To be used at a different time"
—Neko Case, "Hell-On"
random request: does anyone happen to have any other quotes in this, uh general genre? it's like "i know exactly how you have constructed me, and i will refute it in the strongest possible terms"

Birds of Nan Elmoth
Other bird and ecology posts in the Beleriand tag!
Written for @melestasflight
Nan Elmoth or the Valley of Stars was a deep forest East of Doriath and on the Eastern banks of the river Celon, a tributary to Aros which was itself a tributary to Sirion.
We can only speculate about the species of trees that grew here with the primary descriptor being that they block the sun. The climate and habitat is a deep, mixed deciduous forest with high moisture.
Note: I do have to give some license because of the enchantments, which means that the inspiration will take from real places, will not match exactly to the flora and fauna not that I’ve described here, but I’ve done my best, and I’ve done my best to include species that exist in deep forests, and not in open spaces, or at the very least live part time or migratory species in deeper forests.
I usually include world building notes on these post, so they’re not just me listing species but because there’s not a settlement or society here I wasn’t really sure what to do so I included world building notes for the Sindar more generally as well as nearby cultures, including Nandor and Avarin elves, I think all three have spent intermittent time in Nan Elmoth
I do not think that Nan Elmoth has a large amount of fauna because of its enchantments however there are species that have adapted to living there and in the surrounding regions. Most of these species are passerines who do not flock in large numbers. There are also species that do not exist in this world
Deep in the woods: chaffinch, hawfinch, pine grosbeak , common bullfinch, tawny owl, wood grouse, song thrush, common nightingale, hermit thrush
On the outskirts: northern parula, chestnut bunting, brambling, lesser redpoll, common nightingale, common wren
By the pool and in wetlands: rustic bunting, purple heron (migratory)
By the river banks: black faced bunting, common rosefinch, white throated dipper, common crane
Migratory: little bunting, northern wryneck, Bohemian waxwing (breeds in conifers), scaly thrush
World building notes:
-Nightingales, usually species of forest edges and clearings live in Nan Elmoth and have since Melian herself was there. Their song is lower than their kin in other regions and many feel it is more eerie, almost mournful.
-Birds that feed on yew berries and other species poisonous to elves and men are considered symbols of endurance and faith in some Sindar culture.
-The whistling cry of waxwings appears in Avarin music, often emulated through flutes carved from wood and reed.
-Rusting buntings are symbols of maternity and childbearing in some Avari and Sindar cultures
-It is told among the Avari of this region that thrushes and other songbirds guided them to find food in the faint dawn of their awakening.

Poem in October
by Dylan Thomas
It was my thirtieth year to heaven Woke to my hearing from harbour and neighbour wood    And the mussel pooled and the heron            Priested shore        The morning beckon With water praying and call of seagull and rook And the knock of sailing boats on the net webbed wall        Myself to set foot            That second In the still sleeping town and set forth.
My birthday began with the water- Birds and the birds of the winged trees flying my name    Above the farms and the white horses            And I rose        In rainy autumn And walked abroad in a shower of all my days. High tide and the heron dived when I took the road        Over the border            And the gates Of the town closed as the town awoke.
A springful of larks in a rolling Cloud and the roadside bushes brimming with whistling    Blackbirds and the sun of October            Summery        On the hill's shoulder, Here were fond climates and sweet singers suddenly Come in the morning where I wandered and listened        To the rain wringing            Wind blow cold In the wood faraway under me.
Pale rain over the dwindling harbour And over the sea wet church the size of a snail    With its horns through mist and the castle            Brown as owls        But all the gardens Of spring and summer were blooming in the tall tales Beyond the border and under the lark full cloud.        There could I marvel            My birthday Away but the weather turned around.
It turned away from the blithe country And down the other air and the blue altered sky    Streamed again a wonder of summer            With apples        Pears and red currants And I saw in the turning so clearly a child's Forgotten mornings when he walked with his mother        Through the parables            Of sun light And the legends of the green chapels
And the twice told fields of infancy That his tears burned my cheeks and his heart moved in mine.    These were the woods the river and sea            Where a boy        In the listening Summertime of the dead whispered the truth of his joy To the trees and the stones and the fish in the tide.        And the mystery            Sang alive Still in the water and singingbirds.
And there could I marvel my birthday Away but the weather turned around. And the true    Joy of the long dead child sang burning            In the sun.        It was my thirtieth Year to heaven stood there then in the summer noon Though the town below lay leaved with October blood.        O may my heart's truth            Still be sung On this high hill in a year's turning.

ROUND 1: BATTLE 3
Tumblr media
Participants: @da3dm 's Irzayn "Irza" Heron, @pocket-ozwynn 's Alice and Freyja, and @frostios 's Staple and Crown
Descriptions: "Black hair, gold eyes, dragon tail/eyes/claws, constant unhappy look"
"Confident QUEEN Freyja and flustered bf Alice"
"Staple and Crown are both mouse-adjacent siblings.
Staple has a much thicker build than their younger sibling and long gray-brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. The same color fur can be found on his face, body, and tail. He wears a light green sleeved shirt, a darker green vest, brown pants, and a brown belt with a gold clasp. They have slight facial hair, a thick unibrow, and sharp yellowed teeth.
Crown is slim and nimble. Their hair is dark and cut short. Slightly lighter fur is found on their face, body, and tail. They wear a gray shirt under brown patched overalls. They have thick, short eyebrows and yellowed teeth with two prominent 'buck' teeth."
Propaganda: "He's a villain and his villain name is Voidshire. He uses really strong shadow magic and is actually very fond of one of the heroes that can somehow tell where he's going to show up. This is in a system where there's a lot of villains and a lot of heroes. He's not really originally a g/t character but there's some g/t in the main story itself when involving the fairies or the giants that don't show up a whole lot. All the aus of him at g/t though since it's possible to happen in their world, just not relevant to the main story."
"they are iconic and cute and deserve to smack down the rest"
"Staple and Crown used to live in an abandoned, dilapidated mansion witb the rest of their large family until the property was bought and set to be renovated. Pest control was hired to get rid of the "rats" that were believed to be in the estate, leading to Staple escaping just barely with his youngest sibling. They both manage to hide away in a truckbed of haystacks and travel away from all they knew. They eventually make their new home in the rafters of a barn on the property of a middle aged farmer.
Crown is traumatized by the event, which leads to them being mute. They make up for the lack of words with noises like chirps, whistles, and hisses. Other than that, they aren't slowed down by their past and are as curious as ever, getting into just about every place that Staple has forbidden them to mess with.
Staple is definitely the overprotective type. He's desperate to hold on to the last remaining family he has, even though she and Crown butt heads more often than not. Staple doesn't really understand Crown, but he always believes to have her best interests at heart. But if he has to tell them one more time NOT to go sticking their head in the chicken coop he'll probably lose it."
