One nice thing about being home and recovering from my surgery if looking through older photos. This was an amazing trip with some good friends. We hiked the Wire Pass Slot Canyon near Kanab, Utah. I can’t wait to get back out and create some more memories.

Hayduke Day 33: Despite not waking up as early as I know they did, I'm trying to catch @artemis_hikes @heavyteva and @twigadventures before they hit the highway and hitchhike into Kanab. My mission ends in failure. I'm not hitching into Kanab as I have plenty of food and am aiming instead for Jacob Lakes, just north of Grand Canyon National Park. This is yet another long waterless stretch (I don't have any natural sources marked until Jacob Lake which I won't reach until the end of the day tomorrow) but this next section takes me past Buckskin Gulch, Wire Pass, and Stateline Campground where there are plenty of day hikers and weekend warriors to get water from. If I had cached water on the Hayduke (I didn't cache anywhere) and there were no hikers here, this would be a good spot to cache. You're welcome for the useless information. Hiking through Upper Buckskin Gulch and out Wire Pass I pass through the second (and I think final?) slot canyon of the Hayduke. Honestly, expected there to be more. Its getting late but I decide to push a bit further to Stateline Campground - the northern terminus of the Arizona Trail and the Utah-Arizona border. I meet a couple camped with bikes who I suspect of riding the Arizona Trail. My suspicion is wrong, but they end up being incredibly friendly and they welcome me into their camp, feed me, water me, and allow me to camp. And yes, for anyone paying attention to the distance and elevation gain at the end of these posts, today was absurd. Nearly 33 mi / 53 km with less than 1,000 ft / 305 m of elevation gain. The Hayduke does not lack much, but elevation gain has certainly been in short supply. I guess that will change when I have to descend into and climb out of Grand Canyon three times. Day: Lick Wash to Stateline Campground Distance: 32.72 mi / 52.66 km Elevation gain: 984 ft / 300 m #hayduketrail #utahbackpacking

Tag 37 (31.5.22)

Wire Pass
Deja Vu hits me once again as I walk towards the Wire Pass trailhead, but I ignore the feeling as my focus is on the excessive morning heat. I check my water levels and then hit the trail. The soothing red sandstone formations quiet the soul as I hike along, looking for snakes and scorpions. After a couple miles I come to the slot canyon entrance. Each line in the rock is a block of time, a…

Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch
Drove from Phoenix and camped overnight 1.5 miles from trailhead. It was forecast for rain later in the afternoon so I just planned a short hike to check out the canyon.

Wire Pass Trail #4 (Slot Entrance)
Wire Pass Trail #4 (Slot Entrance)
Slot Canyons, a long, narrow channel with sheer rock walls, are thoroughly enjoyable to hike through. The play of light spilling in from on high illuminates the red walls feels mystical. This was the first slot canyon on wired trail. We couldn’t get very far because there was a ladder going downward to navigate which was out of the Dog’s comfort zone. So, we went over the top. We, us and the…

2019, May 11-13: Kanab & Grand Staircase-Escalante Nat’l Monument Areas

Hiking, hiking, hiking. It’s what we do...every day that we can. On Saturday we did an 8-mile round-trip into the hills and valleys/washes/dry-creekbeds south of Kanab UT, along the base of the Vermillion Cliffs. The desert is in bloom right now, and quite beautiful. I think the Prickly-Pear Cactus with their new shoots (looks like feet & toes) are particularly funny. On Sunday we did a 4-mile round-trip hike (Greenhalgh Trail) up a 1000’ elevation climb. The switchbacks were grueling. The reward was panoramic views of Hog Canyon, Bryce Canyon NP in the far distance, and the North Kaibab Plateau.

Today we did more slot-canyon hiking (we really enjoy slots). We entered the Buckskin Gulch Canyon via the Wire Pass slot-canyon. It became very narrow at a few spots, with my shoulders brushing both sides. I tried to turn around once to see where Vicki was, but with my backpack in place, I could not turn. On our walk/approach to the canyon, we spotted a rattler in the shade of a shrub (second rattler we’ve seen during our time in UT this far). One of the rock formations looked like a large elephant. At one place we had to drop down to a lower section of the canyon at a very narrow point in the slot, climbing over a boulder and climbing down about 6’ to the lower section by means of an old wooden ladder that someone had placed there to make things a bit easier. Once back out of the canyon, the 86° temperature made the walk back to the trailhead via a sandy dry creekbed a bit of a chore.
On the drive back to the main highway, via an 8-mile rough 4x4 road, a man flagged us down. He asked if we had some water to spare, as he had been hiking for some time and couldn’t find any streams or pools in the area with drinkable water. He was in the middle of a hike from Arches Nat’l Park to Zion Nat’l Park (a distance if about 340 miles). He was a friendly, talkative fellow who seemed genuinely appreciative of the bottles of water we let him have. Compared to him, Vicki & I can hardly call ourselves “hikers.” 😄

Wire Pass to Lee's Ferry via Buckskin Gulch and Paria Canyon Day 2: Yesterday's section of the hike was the only day that required we make a certain number of miles to get to a safe campsite (safe from flash floods and, presumably, the boogeyman). We have three more days of hiking planned, but if yesterday was any indication of what today will be like, I would prefer to finish late tomorrow. My mud-crusted shoes feel almost frozen (because hard mud, not because cold) as I pull them on and immediately dirty the fresh pair of socks I put on this morning. Still better than having to put back on the muck-covered socks from yesterday (extra pairs of socks  can do wonderful things for your mental status on the trail). Today we are still at risk for death in a flash flood, but the canyon is significantly than the slot canyon that is Buckskin Gulch. We spend most of the day crisscrossing the Paria River as it winds its way through the canyon. The sun isn't too brutal and there is even a bit of cloud cover at times. Strange, because the forecast promised clear skies and a zero percent chance of precipitation, but we're not too worried. There are a few reliable springs in Paria Canyon and we manage to find one of two today. We max out our water capacity and hope we won't have to filter much once we reach camp (since we forgot a piece of our filter and filtering has become a huge pain). Camp isn't too far off and we find a sandy spot up away from the river to call home. My shoes and socks are once again destroyed, but I manage to do some cleaning in the silt and sediment-rich Paria before we loose the sun. If we put in a good effort tomorrow we should be able to make it back to the car, but we'll have to see how we feel and how the terrain is (and, I guess, the weather). Day: Paria Confluence to somewhere in Paria Canyon Distance: 18.64 mi / 30 km Elevation Gain: 420 ft / 128 m 📸1/2: @paulinadao #PariaCanyon #Utah
