Victoria Yakusha is a Ukrainian born architect, designer, founder of ‘YAKUSHA’ studio and collection of live design ‘FAINA’. Deeply inspired by Ukrainian culture and traditions Victoria Yakusha is associated with contemporary Ukrainian design and known for creating her own unique style - 'live minimalism’. Clay, wood, willow vine, wool are the main elements Yakusha works with. These naturally occurring products help to express the philosophy of ‘live design’. ‘Live design’ incorporates the energy from these organic materials - and the history. Live Minimalism “I came to the realisation of this concept after almost 15 years of practice and searching for what I really appreciate in the design, what gives meaning to my work. I am still in the process of crystallisation of this design philosophy (not just style or trend) and with each new project I see it more and more clearly. ‘Live design’ or ‘live minimalism’ for me is a combination of two important ingredients. First of all, it is an interior or design piece that is filled with the spirit, has a story behind it, and has an emotional connection to its owner. And secondly, it is a clean, minimalistic approach that we use.” - Victoria Yakusha, Architect, Designer. At Victoria Yakusha’s eponymous multidisciplinary studio (founded in 2006) they use a century-old craft technique known as “valkuvannia” for their organic line of furniture ‘ZTISTA’. “Ztista” is Ukrainian for “made of dough”. This primitive artisan rolling technique of coating a solid surface (walls of a village house) with a mixture of straw, hay and natural clay is applied to the modern design process. It creates a unique design piece with an imperfect surface. This experimenting with craft techniques and contemporary sustainable design helps Yakusha emphasise the importance of connection to Ukrainian cultural roots.
