First

It’s Bach again, filling the late afternoon air with a soft tune.

Yuki looks up from his phone – the message of the girl he flirted the day before left read but forgotten.

He finds it strange, how he has never heard Nico-chan-senpai’s play before the other day. Haiji has heard it. Shindou has heard it. Musa, turns out, not only have heard it, but even talked to Nico-chan senpai about it, and knows that Nico-chan-senpai is contracted by a small orchestra as substitute cellist – he practices at home lately due to the fact that their original player hurt his hand in an accident.

Yuki concludes that Nico-chan-senpai never tried to hide it. It was Yuki who always wore his earphones, listening to his own music, and yet…

It stings.

Yuki realizes immediately just how ridiculous it is to be hurt by it – to think that he is the closest to Nico-chan-senpai, when all he does is shout and yell at the 4th year for smoking inside – but still, it stings.

Yuki grumbles, burying his head in his pillow.

He hates classical music – it reminds him of his relentless instructor, the never-ending practices, the utter failure that was the violin for him.

Still, his earphones lay beside his bed untouched since lunch, and Bach fills the room with its lamenting notes. And no matter how Yuki struggles, kicking his blanket around and tossing his pillow across his room, the memories of the past hanging above him as a sour reminder that even he is not capable of doing everything flawlessly at first try – he has been waiting for this moment, for music notes to fill the air and engulf him in this sweet pain.

To hear Nico-chan-senpai play.

When Yuki closes his eyes, he sees Nico-chan-senpai out on the porch, sitting on the weathered chair of the landlord in his sweatpants stretched out at the knees, barefoot and a half-done cigarette between his lips. Yuki is mesmerized by the gentle way Nico-chan-senpai holds his cello, by the smallest movements of his fingers and the ever-fine line of his jaw as he leans over his instrument.

Yuki does not like Bach. Bach is baroque, Bach is heavy, Bach is unwieldly, there is nothing refreshing in his tones.

But the way Nico-chan-senpai plays, Yuki could listen to it forever.

Groaning, he rolls out of bed, pocketing his phone. Denial leads him out to the corridor, across the house and onto the street. The music dissolves in the chill afternoon breeze, and the silence that follows Yuki down the hill to the park helps to clear his thoughts.

He is not fascinated by Nico-chan-senpai.

He does not dream about Nico-chan-senpai’s fingers either.

Stupid Musa, naïve enough to talk about the cello with Nico-chan-senpai.

It stings.
