meta i want to write but probably won't:

chloe is very clearly meant to be the dark parallel to kirika (most evident when we see kirika in true noir mode), but altena is meant to be the dark parallel to mireille.

(and altena's relationship with chloe is meant as a warped sort of parallel to mireille's relationship with kirika. altena pretends to love chloe, but if her hate can save quote is correct, she never truly loved her and only used her as a means to an end. mireille, from the beginning, intentionally said she was using kirika as a means to an end and pretended to hate her, but ended up truly loving her.)

Eight years old.

Her lavender eyes look on a world at war as she grips the hand of her little doll.  The desert sand is hot underneath her bare feet, and the shuddering sounds of a clicking gun pull the other way.  The mattress was not soft.  Neither was he.

She drops the doll and keeps walking.

 ~

Thirteen years old.

Already Les Soldats have found her.  Or perhaps it is that she has found them – in seeking a way to stop the world from being as it is, in digging deep into the records of power and its exchange, there is mention of an ancient organization, one set apart from the world itself, one that bleeds the world dry by becoming the world itself.

They are meant to save the children such as herself.

They have failed.  She has slipped through the cracks.

She applies herself, unable to speak, and they treat her as someone set apart from even themselves.  They send her to live with their priestesses, where she is trained and trained and----

 ~

Fifteen years old.

The blood of the last high priestess on her hands.

The sin within the sin.

There is murmuring around her, a low sort of hum, and she turns to face the others, bows once with a serene, pleasant smile.  She has been accepted.  She is the next high priestess.  This is the way it always goes and the way it has always gone since the beginning.

Perhaps Lady Altena is young, but she was younger still when she found them – and that alone seals her worth.  She is the first and only child of her family to become one of Les Soldats. No, she has no other family.  There are only Les Soldats.

She will study.

 ~

Sixteen years old.

She runs across the word Noir as she has for the past few years.  Her lips press together and her fingers brush across the fragments.  It seems both factions have agreed for Le Grand Retour.  She personally has spoken on it in murmured whispers with those who she knows will spread the word, even though they will all too quickly forget that she was the one to speak.

She has been doing this for years now.

Les Soldats have become the very world from which they were meant to be set apart.  They, too, need to be cleansed so that no one else will slip through the cracks, so that there is no one else like herself.

She is the first of her kind and she will be the last.

 ~

Seventeen years old.

Lady Altena blesses Mireille Bouquet, the first of the saplings, the one who is discarded.

 ~

Eighteen years old.

Lady Altena blesses Chloe Barrett, the second of the saplings, the one whom she loves.

 ~

Nineteen years old.

Lady Altena blesses Kirika Yuumura, the third and final of the saplings, the one who will grow to hate her.

 ~

Twenty years old.

The Yuumura family is dead and Kirika lives at the Manor.  She has been researching the word Noir – two maidens who govern death – and every now and again, the thought comes to her in the midst of her hate: this can be done.

And now, here she is.  A child, gifted to her.

She slipped through the cracks and, in another way, so too will this child.

But after this one – after Noir is brought back – then the children will be protected.  That is what Noir does.  They ward the darkness; they lure the dark souls; they protect the nursing babes.

Noir is two, but always there have been competitions, fighting, training.  There are always more than two to begin with, always children of Les Soldats.

She will train the child she has been given, and she will seek for those who will be best for her.

Twenty-five years old.

She chooses Mireille Bouquet.

The girl once named Kirika Yuumura completes her first assassination mission.

 ~

Twenty-six years old.

The Bouquets will not give her Mireille to train.

The girl once named Kirika Yuumura has accomplished thousands of missions.

She is perfect.

 ~

Twenty-seven years old.

Mireille Bouquet is lost to her.

Chloe Barrett watches as Kirika Yuumura devours the rest of the Bouquet family and follows her back from her mission.

She finds in this new child the second she desires, one who is eager to learn, if only for Kirika’s sake.

She can use this obsession.
