since everyone's attention is on spn and destiel now, many people are commenting on how awkward the scene seems and if they filmed it separately. do you think there's any truth in that? i think it was filmed before covid shutdown so it's not like they had to keep the social distance or something. i genuinely don't care about the 'is jensen homophobic about destiel' discourse, i think regardless of his personal feelings he wouldn't botch the scene bc of some awkwardness he felt.

Jensen and Misha filmed together right before the virus shut down production. I’ve seen deliberate awkwardness filmed but that scene wasn’t it. If anything, there’s still a lot of narrative space in 15x18, visually. There was some other episode this year that I remember talking about things “hanging” and I’d say this episode also falls into that.

Everything with Dean and Cas visually this episode continues to play with negative space in what is by now, a long-standing visual trend between the two. Then there’s that one scene when they first return to the bunker where they circle and pass each other like two galaxies colliding or something. I’m no gif maker so I don’t have a shot of the 15x18 scene but visually it recalls this:

Then there’s another scene where Billie stalks them around the corner where they are crouched then the reveal and we see the space where together they are now visually missing. Rich used this negative space technique a lot, like... a lot.

The further apart Dean and Cas physically are, the sadder the show generally becomes, with Cas’ death frequently being the greatest distance/sadness for Dean. I don't mean to 'dog pile' but your recent discussions on s9 has brought up one of my few real peevs on the show. I recognize that the show has declared that without his Grace, Cas is human. I don't like it, but I understand that to be the case. But it doesn't make any sense? In s6 Cas says to Crowley, "I'm an angel you ass, I don't have a soul." And yet without his Grace he apparently has one? I go with it because that's what the show has declared even if i don't think it makes sense. Oh well!

I was originally gonna reply to this privately, but I think I did a fair job summing up my core thoughts on this in just a few paragraphs, so I’m posting it here as a sort of tl;dr for everything linked above… :’D

OKAY, NOW ON TO THE ACTUAL REPLY!

I don’t know if everything from that post back and forth with zerbe answered your question or just gave you more… or if any of those links I through at you in the chatbubbles yesterday helped…

But one more thing, which I’m not sure was included in any of those linked posts or not, but is something I know I’ve talked about in the past, including as recently as 14.19 when Jack was turning humans into angels, is the commonalities between angelic grace and human souls.

My theory since s4, since we first met Anna, has been that there is a core to the being of an angel that encompasses their “personalities,” for lack of a better word, and their thoughts and memories… and that this kernel of being is the “identity” of an angel separate from the “power pack” of the grace that encompasses their “mojo.”

The fact that Anna still could hear angel radio and was eventually able to access her memories of having been an angel even though she’d cut out her grace and literally been born as a human, with a human soul, was all the proof I personally needed that despite everything else they are, angels do have a nascent or primordial seed of a human soul within themselves that they can literally choose to nurture or not. And Cas, by his choices, has been nurturing that part of himself since s4.

And when Cas had the “power pack” portion of his grace cut out by Metatron, he wasn’t left “soulless,” in comparison to every other example we have of a soulless person on the entire run of the series. He was perhaps even MORE overwhelmed by his own human feelings than at any other time in his history on the show. His personality, memories, his preferences and emotional engagement with life, and the essential core of his identity wasn’t extracted when his grace was. So what was left? The show seems to be actively begging us to consider this, especially when Metatron stated directly that he believed he’d left Cas with the equivalent of a human soul in 8.23.

Cas had no wings, no “mojo,” but he had his entire personality, all his memories, everything that comprised his fundamental identity… but no grace.

The show has contrasted this by demonstrating the other way an angel can inhabit and then leave a human vessel– as that glowing cloud of grace– that incorporates all these “personality traits” and memories, etc. into the grace cloud. So clearly, that portion of an angel’s grace is somehow not the same thing as the “mojo” portion.

That leaves us to question what exactly Cas was at that point, and because of all of his other actions and choices during that time, the only reasonable conclusion I could personally arrive at was that yes, that was the equivalent of a human soul.

I mentioned Jack converting human souls into angels in 14.19, because before when I’d mentioned my theory of grace as stated above, folks countered or dismissed my theory because it apparently didn’t work in the other direction, of the potential for a human soul to have this “mojo power pack” grafted on to it, to make a human into an angel. But this is exactly what Jack did, so I feel even more content with my personal theory about what angel grace actually is, and how it functions, and how at the very center of every angel is this kernel of potential to nurture their very own human soul.

OH! And after going back and writing the long intro into this post and considering how the heck to actually tag this thing, I feel it’s important to also mention that 6.20, where Cas delivered that “I don’t have a soul” line, was written by Ben Edlund, who also wrote 5.14, wherein under the influence of Famine, Cas developed a craving for burgers that, in episode, he deflected HARD and blamed his sudden craving for red meat on Jimmy, on his vessel… but I always ALWAYS have read the fact he turned away, broke eye contact with Dean when he made that statement, as a direct deflection, as him deliberately handwaving the fact that Cas himself was “becoming more and more human” during s5, culminating with the near-complete loss of his powers by the time he wakes up in the hospital in 5.21 and could no longer deny the fact that he’d lost his angelic powers.

And for those who require Authorial Intent as proof of things like this, that’s essentially what Edlund said he was attempting to prove with that line.

Counseling Theories Series!

Hi everyone!  I’ve decided that I want to do a little series of posts regarding some of the different counseling theories!  Like every subfield of psychology, there are a lot of different theories regarding counseling.  These theories address things such as the counselor-client relationship, different methods or strategies used, and the underlying beliefs about the purpose of counseling!  I’m going to do a quick introduction of each of the theories I’m going to discuss under the “read more” (since I know no one wants to scroll a million miles to get past this post), so if you’re interested, go ahead and read the full post and stay tuned as I get more in depth about each theory and the psychologist(s) who helped develop it!

1. Psychoanalytic Theory

This is the theory that gets the most attention in “pop psychology”.  This theory uses things such as transference, free association, and dream analysis to determine what in going on in a person’s unconscious mind.  The core belief is that these unconscious thoughts are what drive behavior, so when a person is behaving abnormally, the unconscious needs to be explored.  Key psychologists in psychoanalytic theory are Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Karen Horney.

2. Adlerian Theory

One of my personal favorites, Adlerian theory believes in the importance of the individual perspective, a person’s social life, and striving towards goals.  This theory focuses on the subjective experiences of the client rather than being a technique-driven approach like most other theories.  The key psychologist in this theory is Alfred Adler.

3. Existential Theory

This is yet another theory that is not technique-driven, because it is typically utilized alongside another approach.  This theory addresses existential questions such as freedom, meaningfulness, responsibility, and death.  The focus is on the future and the client’s potential, and uses existentialism to help a person realize their potential.  Key psychologists in existential theory are Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Viktor Frankl.

4. Person-Centered Theory

As the name suggests, this theory is all about the client.  Rather than having sessions that are driven by a counselor where the client is along for the ride, the counselor acts more as a guide as the client explores his or her own thoughts and comes to his or her own conclusions.  This theory believes that all people are inherently good and are capable of growth.  The key psychologist in this theory is Carl Rogers.

5. Gestalt Theory

In Gestalt theory, the focus is on the “here and now”.  Clients are encouraged to be aware of everything that they do, from taking a deep breath to shaking their leg to rolling their eyes and every other action.  The ultimate goal of Gestalt theory is to allow for mindfulness and awareness of one’s experiences.  The key psychologist in this theory is Fritz Perls.

6. Behavioral Theory

Behavioral theory, as the name suggests, focuses on a person’s behaviors.  This theory is based on learning theories, such as classical and operational conditioning, and believes that maladaptive behaviors form from faulty learning.  Essentially, behaviorism strives to reteach the client to help them function healthily.  Key psychologists in behavioralism are E.L. Thorndike and B.F. Skinner.

7. Cognitive-Behavioral Theory

Perhaps the most widely used therapy in the treatment of mental disorders today, cognitive-behavioral theory is all about changing dysfunctional thinking in order to reduce maladaptive behaviors.  This theory uses homework assignments, education, and teaching coping skills (along with a multitude of other techniques) in order to help a client in a timely manner.  Key psychologists in this theory are Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis.

8. Choice/Reality Theory

This theory is known for being blunt and direct, because it uses direct questioning in order to help clients realize their responsibility for their thoughts and behaviors.  The client is given the opportunity to evaluate their own behaviors and relationships and to set goals that suit their needs.  The key psychologist in this theory is William Glasser.

9. Feminist Theory

Feminist theory looks at the sociocultural aspect of a person’s life when addressing maladaptive thoughts or behaviors.  The focus is on whether a person is a minority and is being oppressed by society and aims to empower the client.  While it is called feminist theory, it can also be used in racial, sexual orientation, and ethnic contexts as well as gender.  Some of the key psychologists that have contributed to feminist theory are Jean Baker Miller, Carolyn Zerbe Enns, Oliva M. Espin, and Laura S. Brown.

Hey friends. I’m struggling for the words to say. We deserve to see the original finale script. It was more found family friendly and not such a slap in the face to Dean’s character development. I know in my heart they didn’t want to end the show like this, on these details. It’s still amazing they came back to filming at all. All the costs to keep everything in storage without shooting for months was great.

Personally I’m reaping the show at 15x18, since it was our last episode of true scripted intent. Imo they never should have shot these two edited episodes and instead just did a movie covering 15x19 and 15x20 sometime down the road. So much was just... bizarre. Little things. Other things like wigs and makeup plainly imo show us how truly thrown together this was, as much as the show might not want to admit that. Or maybe they do. They should.

I don’t know how I’m personally going to proceed from here. I feel like I’ve been killed by what I loved but at the same time I know they didn’t want to kill me. Doesn’t change my reality. But also I refuse to believe my time here was wasted. I see the details they wanted to give us and it was a good story before shutdown. I’m begging and praying they publicly explain these changes. I know it’ll put at least some hearts at peace even with the damage done.

Devastating. It’s all just fucking devastating.

I’m still thankful for this show tho. The relationships I’ve made through this show are what I’ll carry with me always. It’s what I’m personally trying to focus on in order to move forward. So check in on your friends when you finish gathering yourselves. Be there for one another. 😭😔💔

For anyone curious, most of my SPN analysis these days is in twitter threads, not meta essays. But i’m @zerbehunter over there. I wanted to stress again how much I know some of us are putting on the line here. Our hearts. The possibility of not getting what we hope happens. I’ve looked over Dabb era long and hard. What Jack symbolizes. The themes we just keep. getting. It’s all just so deeply coded both subtextually and textually (like Dean’s mixtape to Cas) in the repressed queer experience, like, so many of us fans see that and identify with that not by accident.

Concerning my personal fan experience, my involvement in fandom as a meta writer of Cas I’ve never felt more seen in Supernatural than in 15x18. The only exception to this is seeing what’s become of Becky in 15x04. She’s me. I’m her. I write fan works for the show. I have a Supernatural Etsy shop. I’m a mom with a minivan. I just need some peace and quiet in this house to do billing and orders. 😂

And I’m going to get deeply personal here. This election at the same time as Destiel is quite the online participation experience. It has been quite the ride, quite the overlap in experience. The patience. The waiting. The plainly seeing the truth but no one just coming out and saying Biden was the winner. We knew he was. Days ago. Yet they don’t just say it. Frustration, memes, the hysterical waiting to learn if you were right. “Stay Calm. Let the counting finish.” All this while we tell ourselves we know the truth, Biden has won. This is exactly what it’s been like to wait for Destiel. Cas’ 15x18 confession was like a ton of Georgia mail ballots coming in. And these things bared the same feelings for me personally. So much riding on this. The longest waited results in modern (television) history. Well, Biden just went canon with as text after the text of the mail ballots slowly shifts Georgia blue. But Georgia has always been blue, like Dean, that’s a truth that has been repressed by hate. But now there Georgia shines, her true colors. Then I look at 15x18. The timing here feels nothing short of cosmic. Turning Georgia blue is our turning Dean textually queer.

I feel almost crazy thinking and saying that but I want to be frank here in these last few weeks before the finale. I think I’m going to go back and really look at all the lessons of S15 this week, look for some clarity in my expectations. I think it will only make me more sure of myself tho, at least in regards to this.

Well, I’m just very tired. So I guess that’s it. That’s what is rolling around in my head. The election took so much emotionally out of me. I’m probably gonna go reblog and retweet others and then fall asleep. We’re all feeling different things right now, have wildly difference experiences with the show and its creatives. I respectfully don’t want to get involved with debates over who is allowed to speak their experience and who isn’t. This discussion is important because the truth is important. Speak your truth.

I’m gonna to mention this here like I did on Twitter. These are both from Dabb episodes involving convenience store purchases concerning Dean. They’ve already said it all with the shot. Rich is very selective about portraying things, too. I’ve had the pleasure of attending his Dick Chat M&G twice but this last time was wonderful! He takes directing very seriously. That imagery, so carefully shot and being there twice back to back doesn’t feel like an accident to me. Neither is the resolution that must come because of it. At the least, the very fucking LEAST, the possibility of them holding hands would have had to cross the audience’s mind because of how the first shot lingered. Literally everything about it. I think it means exactly what it looks like it does.

!! Possible (?) Spoilers for the SPN series finale coming up !! Hello you! I just saw Misha saying that Cas ending is "very finale" and that its the ending Misha would have wanted/written... Didn't Misha say he wanted Cas to sacrifice himself in the end? Or do you think there is a chance its still more positive cause Misha openly talked about Cas dying and now he just said that and he cant just reveal a spoiler like that can he? I'm sad but I always thought SPN would screw me over lol

He’s historically said that, yes. The question everyone should be asking is what does “final” look like in a world where Living and Dying is more or less a revolving door? And the answer is it simply looks like a world that has different rules than what we are used to. The afterlife system, as a revolving door traversed by the supernatural, must change. S15 tells us this in every way except bluntly. It shows us with Kevin, with Rowena, with Ruby. It will undoubtedly do it with Charlie.

I think Misha has been carefully instructed as to what his PR around the subject is supposed to be and that he’s following it as best he can. “Final” in this case, is simply the best way to describe the change that is coming to the very fabric of the universe’s reality under Chuck. Andrew Dabb (and Singer?) has described the ending this way as well.

Does Misha’s words sound discouraging as hell given what we know of what he’s said in the past about what he wishes for Cas? Well, yeah. I definitely think Cas fans should prepare for the worst but not necessarily expect it. In general, it’s perfectly fine to “reap” the show before 15x20 and just either wait to hear and then watch or just never watch at all if you hear it’s something you don’t like. There’s plenty of shows I’ve never finished for various reasons. For example I loved Person of Interest but I’ll probably never watch the final season again but would gladly watch the first three seasons over and over. My advice is that you know you BEST and you should do whatever you have to in order to save yourself the most heartache (if you are very emotionally invested) and don’t be afraid to cherry pick your experience of the show. For example all of S14 I fast forwarded through Pelegrino’s solo stuff because it brought me nothing positive. Didn’t care. Skip.

Anytime I worry about anything with SPN (and I’m forever gonna be sad we’ll never see what the production’s true end vision was before the pandemic made end production more challenging) I always remember to take a step back and look at the greater themes and that usually helps me refocus my personal expectations. ^_^
