Dream Beyond Shadows is a travelogue written by Kartikeya Ladha. The book is an account of how he leaves his job in search of real purpose in life. His inner voice takes him to the Amazon jungles, where he participates in the Ayahuasca ceremony. It proves to be the best decision of his life, and he doesn't remain the same person anymore. The Ayahuasca ceremony is not for faint-hearted or weak-willed people and it was interesting to read an account of it in this book. The writer tried his best to pen those intense experiences he went through during the ceremony. And I am sure many would be intrigued about the Ayahuasca ceremony and want to find out more about it after reading his account. My tryst with ayahuasca in a novel began when I read Shivya Nath’s book, “A shooting star”; an equally charming book about self-discovery through travelling. The book is divided into three parts. Complete surrender, The ayahuasca journey, and then the Drifting mode. Each part unfolds the author’s experiences and how he overcomes the obstacles in his journey. The narration is mellifluous and while reading I could imagine myself in the narrator’s place quite easily. He narrates and simultaneously travels through Peru, South America, and Amazon Jungle and gives a beautiful and detailed description of the places he visited, local food, local languages, and the people he has met throughout his journey. There are some amazing photos in the book. Special mention and shout out to the cover art. Well to be very honest almost five minutes was spent trying to pronounce the name of the book :P but as they say, things are not what they seem. The book mainly talks about the Om Shmeiki Healing Organisation, and the healing practices and methods they follow to heal people.It takes time for a person to get to the bottom of the storyline and get on the flow with the characters. The language is quite lucid and the book is filled with examples that make the book simple to the readers even though the concept is quite different from the usual books we read most of the time. The book explains the spiritual lessons of Shmeiki baba in the light of the principle of non-seriousness, as a response to the understanding that our universe is a comedy of truly cosmic proportions. It suggests that the art of living is to be sincere and asks its readers not to take everything too seriously. The age of adage of “living with the flow” and being “true to yourself”. Plot Summary: The Shmospels of Shmeiki is a satirical, yet philosophical story which explores the experiences of foreign tourists in India. The rich, diverse and ancient culture is often quite different from what travellers are used to back home. They may try various healing techniques and reflect on themselves in ways they have not done before. Removed from the safety net of their usual frames of reference, they can go a little crazy. This is the case with David Goldberg, the protagonist of the story. The Shmospels describe his epic journey, from the perspectives of four witnesses. Owing to the recent popularity of OTT platforms and the audience’s penchant to watch fresh stories on screen, a lot of recent works by novelists both indian and global are being adapted as series and movies that are both streaming and trending in the readily available OTT platforms. Dark white is one such wonder that was recently adapted as a series and cant say which one I love more.. The novel of the series!! The book is engaging and the psychological angle to the plot makes the novel sui generis and HOW!! The crux of the novel is powerplay and the collateral damage it causes. The novel might be a little off for some readers who do not enjoy violence and take downs but those who enjoy a genre like this Dark white might be one of the best books they come across in recent times. Dark White questions you, the reader, about your own ideas and beliefs pertaining to the terms ‘good’ and ‘evil’ with important concepts of “Karma” and time. The book teaches us that every character has several layers and shades to them and trust me it is best if you do not have any favorites while reading the book. Hence, I feel that character building is one of the best attributes of the book coupled with a fluid language and a fast pace.
