If you like kaiju and mecha, read the first book in my MODERN CARAPACE series: O Bounty Of Thy Ribs. This 72-page graphic novel is the story of Esther, a park ranger who pilots the Tarantula Hawk, a prototype mecha, and uses it to protect desert-dwelling insectoid kaiju from poachers.

Twenty-two years ago on Melida/Daan, Obi-Wan left the Jedi Order to fight in a war. He never returned to the Temple.
Now, a few months into the Clone Wars, a Jedi Knight shows up in Obi-Wan’s office in Coruscant’s undercity, looking for help with a blackmail problem. Blackmail would be simple enough, but this–as with all things involving the Jedi–has something much bigger behind it. Trouble might be Obi-Wan’s business, but this is a little above his pay grade.
Notes: Continuing the tradition of Stories Literally Nobody Asked For, I decided it would be funny to write, of all things, a Star Wars detective noir featuring my favorite Sad Man, Obi-Wan Kenobi. So instead of writing, say, the second half of my actual detective noir novel, I wrote this. Cheers!

I love me a pseudo-historical arranged marriage au but it always nudges my suspension of disbelief when the author has to dance around the implicit expectation that an arranged marriage should lead to children, which a cis gay couple can't provide.
I know for a lot of people that's irrelevant to what they want from an Arranged Marriage plot, but personally I like playing in the weird and uncomfortable implications.
So, I've been thinking about how you would justify an obviously barren marriage in That Kind of fantasy world, and I thought it'd be interesting if gay marriage in Ye Old Fantasy Land was a form of soft disinheritance/abdication.
Like, "Oh, God, I don't want to be in this position of power please just find me a boy to marry", or, "I know you should inherit after you father passes but as your stepmother/legal guardian I think it'd make more sense if my kids got everything, so maybe consider lesbianism?", or "Look, we both know neither of our families has enough money to support that many grandkids, so let's just pair some spares and save both our treasuries the trouble".
Obviously this brings in some very different dynamics that I know not everyone would be pinged by, but I just think it'd be neat.

this is very interesting bc i work at a science facility with a lot of machinery from the 1960s, and it's very analog, tactile, and button-focused. our counters are cylindrical mechanical counters, not digital ones. we have silver switches that get flipped. we have all sorts of buttons: big red buttons, backlit small white square buttons, blue circular buttons. we have lights that are red and green and thousands of other tiny indicator lights.
our 5 total touchscreens (and they're like 10x6 inch, fairly small) are from a 2010ish upgrade. all of our LEDs are again, upgraded parts or systems.
i'm not a knowledgeable trekkie, but i imagine that this is what science looked like in the 1960s. my facility was cutting edge in the 1960s, and it looks like Star Trek, except more cream & brown tones and less silver.
i'm significantly younger than Star Trek, but i can guess that at the time of its creation, the shapes of the future were still these beautiful, analog systems, but the colors of the future were the sleek silvers and bright primary colors that you see.
(i can say that the facility that was made after mine, in the 1970s, is a bright primary blue and yellow and affirms this vision of what people wanted the future to look like in the 1960s, but maybe that's just anecdotal)
not sure where I'm going with this either, but I'll say it's very cool to see Star Trek and my workplace mimic each other by virtue of being products of the 1960s.
I've been in love with how physical all of the items in Star Trek are. The large boards of colorful looking buttons and levers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cartridges everyone has for ids and holding information in voice memos
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The movable screens and the small viewfinders the navigagors use it all is so practical, real to me.
Even simple tools we see only once having such a physical design makes me smile
Tumblr media
I dont really know where I'm going with all this but I guess with so much of life turning digital, everything touch based on a flat screen, nothing to grab nothing to turn, no tactile sensations. It's wonderful seeing people decades ago see the future full of what we lack now and what seems a lot of use yearn to see, to be brought back.
