The umbrella academy

-Philza: eldest of the siblings, adopted and born first. His power is the ability to speak to animals however he is only able to properly use this when talking to crows. His lack of control over his powers lead to the ‘father’ of the household genetically modifying his DNA to give him wings. This also hollowed his bones, hence making him very of balance when he is not in flight. He left age 18 following number 4’s death and many of his siblings resent him for this. He know lives happily with his wife and works as a carpenter.

-Techno: joint second eldest along with his twin Wilbur. Techno’s power allows him to control the flow of his blood, this can be used to enhance his strength and stamina or in extreme situations can mould weapons from cuts in the skin. This ability is rarely used however as it can cause severe blood loss and long term damage. Following 4s death, Techno closed in on himself becoming more angry and cold towards the rest of his siblings. He also left at age 18 and now works as an illegal mercenary. When reuniting with his family, techno started to notice strange voices with seemingly no source.

-Niki: number 3, despite being younger than Wilbur, her power ranks her above him. Niki has pyrokinesis, or a deviation of it, the skin on her fingers is rough and firm allowing her to conjure flames via friction. Her skin is flammable, however she does not burn. She wears thick rubber gloves to protect her hands and stop the fire spreading. Following fours death Niki remained the rock of the family until she also moved out at age 18. She now works in a bakery and has a relatively stable life.

-Wilbur: Wilbur or number 4 is Techno’s twin and Is also dead. Following an accident on a mission Wilbur died from a stab to the chest and gut, promptly severing his family’s somewhat functional connections. His power was kind control, or persuasive speaking. If he makes skin to skin contact with someone he is able to directly control anyone by giving them instructions, it is unknown whether it is possible to break out of this state until Wilbur wants you too. Nowadays Wilbur’s ghost floats around, annoying number 7 and shouting at his twin in hopes one day he will hear him.

-Ranboo: Ranboo is the strangest of the siblings. He’s taller than a small tree and his back bends steeply, his sickly pale skin bleeds in with inky black and his once tawny hair is slowly fading white. Ranboo cannot leave the manor, he won’t fit in. The others do not want to return, Ranboo is very lonely. Number 6 visits sometimes but besides that Ranboo is on his own. He can teleport, usually he has control though he will teleport when startled or surprised. He’s allergic to water and is physically very weak. Ranboo goes into spells which have been dubbed enderwalking where he will sporadically teleport and attack all those in sight. These used to be manageable when number 4 was alive however now there are separate means to control enderwalk. Ranboo has been missing since their fathers death.

-Tubbo-Number 6 Tubbo is the second youngest. He’s reliable, steady and dependable though has a nasty temper when provoked. He has super strength and super durability which whilst benefiting him physically leave him open to surprise attacks as he cannot feel harm. One such example is his burn scar leaving him blind in one eye which was a result of a training accident. Tubbo harbours resentment towards his older siblings for leaving, him taking up the leadership role once number 3 left the academy. Tubbo now works as a junior mechanic.

-Tommy: despite showing signs of power at an early age Tommy seems not to have any. This lead to him often being excluded from his siblings and never forming real connections with any of them, that was until Number 4 died. Tommy found out he could see Wilbur and they quickly formed a bond. Despite Wilburs requests for Tommy to tell their siblings about his powers Tommy still refuses, he wants to move on from the family and after all it’s nice to have some attention to himself. Once leaving at 17 Tommy became a piano tutor and found another older brother figure in the form of one of his students, Dream.

DSMP Characters as DnD Classes

A niche and non-comprehensive list.

Dream: Oathbreaker paladin. He started out with good intentions, but, unfortunately, abusing children and manipulating the everloving hell out of people to further your own plans just really doesn't look good on your godly resume, y'know? Probably has/will multiclassed into a pact of the blade celestial warlock with XD as a patron, which is very nice of him to do (min-maxing is never fun.)

George: Horizon Walker ranger/Circle of Dreams druid multiclass. Horizon walker deals with walking the edges between worlds, and the Circle of Dreams deals with the feywild, and the unconscious mind. George is the type of guy to sleep in a faerie ring and fight the faerie that tries stealing his soul. (I could've gone Circle of Spores druid, but that's a bit on the nose, don't you think?)

Sapnap: Vengeance paladin. Once upon a time, he and Dream were both Devotion paladins or something, but. Uh. Dream's not doing so well with the whole 'don't do harm' thing. And then with Sapnap, after losing everyone he loves to one thing or another, he just wants to make the world right, even at the cost of his own morals.

Karl: Clockwork Soul sorcerer! This one's a newer class, but basically it means that he's filled with the powers of beings from a dimension that are all dedicated to "keeping the world in order". And if that doesn't sound like the Inbetween, I don't know what does! It comes at the risk of losing himself to Order, which is also uh. What were we talking about again?

Quackity: Mastermind rogue. These rogues deal with what goes on behind the scenes and like sorta playing on expectations. Ultimate girlboss rogue subclass tbh. These guys are spies, schemers, what have you. And politicians! Honestly, he probably has a multiclass into a whispers bard, which deals with fucking with people's minds through the power of song.

Tommy: Trickster cleric. I'm a bit biased as a cleric main, but Tommy gives off such huge cleric vibes it isn't even funny. Trickster clerics are jacks of all trades, and so is Tommy. You need someone to set someone on fire? Tommy! Need someone to clone themselves for a cool tag-team fight? Tommy! Need someone to poison someone with a touch? Tommy! Need I say more?

Techno: Battle master fighter. Sometimes you need a guy that can hit good, and thus we have Technoblade, the Guy That Can Hit Good. Battle masters are really good at not getting hit, and they're really good at hitting hard. They're the best of the best, even if the fighter isn't the most exciting class externally. But they're a classic for a reason.

Philza: Samurai fighter/Great Old One warlock (pact of the chain) multiclass. Samurai is a given considering his whole, uh, skin thing. On top of that, in dnd, samurai either kill mercilessly or die trying, and they're very, very op in the right hands. And the warlock pact is, of course, with Mumza. The pact of the chain refers to a familiar, and that, of course, is chat. Poor Phil.

Tubbo desperately trying to ask Aimsey why the flower is important, the way he keeps repeating ‘there’s nothing unique about this, it doesn’t have any worth, you can get stacks and stacks of daisies, I don’t understand’. Aimsey telling him that his lack of attachment was going to ruin him and maybe there’s multiple interpretations to this but all I can think is:

‘The disks Tubbo, the disks were worth more than you ever were!’

It feels like he’s desperately trying to understand why these replaceable objects had so much worth, more worth than he did. The way he died again and again for a bunch of buildings called L’manburg. The way he watched his friends die again and again for things that shouldn’t have been worth the pain and sufferring.

i think the way that emotions still effect the dead so strongly is such an interesting storytelling mechanic that the dream smp utilizes.

the three lives system in itself is really smart being it adds something for every character to lose, no matter where they are in the story. and even then, it can be changed to make even more interesting deviations from the norm, like how c!bad and c!skeppy share lives, and how c!foolish became temporarily immortal.

but when the revive book came into play, it seemed to completely get rid of these stakes it just set up. what’s the point of being worried about any of the characters dying when they could just be brought back at any moment?

but then the story completely shifts the view on revival, and it’s genius.

c!dream, the one cutting off ties from anything and everyone, is the ONLY person who can revive others. and he’s not going to do it unless he has a personal reason he wants them back, not even if someone else begged him to.

and with that, dying isn’t simple. your consciousness never fades. it’s not like you die, blink, and then are back as if nothing happened. time passes, and you feel every second of it in your own personal limbo of agony.

and these emotions are real. they effect the revived as well as the dead which has just been made even more concrete now.

when c!jack was in hell, his spite became so strong he was able to climb out. the feelings he gained WHILE DEAD were enough to pull him out of death’s clutches.

when c!tommy was in limbo, his pain and fear were so agonizing that when he was revived he was constantly terrified and hiding.

and now, while c!ranboo’s soul is in limbo, it holds onto his feelings, bleeding them out and threatening to tear him apart, never able to come together again.

death may not be permanent, but it’s just as scarring. it doesn’t even matter if you’re able to come back because the effect that death has IS permanent.
