"I had always thought that I was the worst person in the whole world, and I had hated myself so badly because I had done so many terrible awful things that I thought were so utterly unforgiveable that I deserve to rot in the lowest circle of hell itself for all eternity... And then I met you."

A pause, and then a smile as they looked up to their partner, their lover, the one they were about to spend the rest of their life with.

"You were so much fucking worse, honestly you repulsed me to the deep, deep depths of my soul and your existence was the very bane of my own. But honestly, you made me feel so much better about my own wacky moral compass so I decided 'Eh why not?' and after a not so few kinda ill-advised decisions which may or may not have had alcoholic influence I had ended up in your bed and after extreme levels of intoxication, I made an incredibly ill-advised decision which ended up with this ring on my finger."

After a deep breath, they continued.

"And now we're here with my loved ones having been drugged and now tied to their chairs, your idiotic goons surrounding the church- but love what they did with the decorations though, how thoughtful of you to put up the red flags to symbolize our relationship, and also not to mention a priest that's probably, wait no scratch that, definitely been threatened and blackmailed to be here, really someone give him some water, the poor man looks like he's gonna croak any second now- oh, thank you Steve!

I know we’re all talking about Joe’s legendary armored van speech, and obviously I love it as much as the next guy, but Nicky’s FACE the moment before he started monologuing straight up KILLS me every time I watch that scene

Look at him. This is the face of a man who’s had to listen to his husband practice a 3-minute monologue about the color of his eyes in front of the mirror for HOURS, and can now recite the whole speech in his sleep. The armored van scene is great for a lot of reasons, and apart from the obvious (you’re an infant. a child. your mocking is thus infantile he’s not my boyfri), seeing Joe and Nicky’s very different, yet somehow equally iconic reactions to homophobia just absolutely sent me. Nicky didn’t even acknowledge his captors’ existence before they started being homophobic. This man was attacked and gassed in his home, woke up in a moving van to find himself in chains and held at gunpoint, and he just went “Where am I? Whatever, I don’t care. This is fine.” Nicolo di Genova said “Being kidnapped is an acceptable way to spend an evening with my significant other, but WHY does it have to be by a group of homophobes EVERY god damn time. No, I’m not his ‘boyfriend’, I’m an 1000 year-old man who can’t even get a good night’s sleep or a senior discount at Applebee’s. Show some respect” 

Meanwhile Joe was just over there like “Oh, you guys think homosexuality is a joke? Well I’m about to be hilarious”

i love how much anya just acts like a kid her age, she excitedly shows yor each room in the house, she introduces her to anyas stuffed toys, she excited says she can clean her own face “all by herself” the way way little kids gets excited about things they can do. she always says how she “helped” with tasks even tho the reality is that kids often just get in the way when they try to help. she has no filter when out in public and will loudly state that the the painting is nude” i can see her boobies papa” and while she draws about her parents being as assassin and spy because she has the drawing skills of a 5 yearold they dont realize she knows their identities. she eats with her fingers instead of using a fork and spoon. etc

i just love all these little details, its super cute and makes anya feel very fleshed out beyond just being a telepath

nothing will ever top the plot twist at the end of RQ 1

let’s take a moment and back up a little, shall we?

Mare has just begged Cal to choose her and the dawn over upholding the twisted oppressive system he was raised to. This is the point in a dystopian fantasy novel where Love Prevails and the government is Overthrown—

oh, wait, no it isn’t. love actually does NOT win, and Cal chooses his duty, and the coup fails. 

and THEN, while we’re all still reeling from that, we get hit with “maven, help me up” “no, I don’t think I will.” and then the king is beheaded and Cal and Mare are suddenly sentenced to death for treason and Maven is actually a little fuckwad—

which just completely fucks up your pov on the last few hundred pages you just read.

except. this wasn’t out of the blue at all, officially making it a Good Plot Twist. Elara doesn’t like the king. Maven and his mother are close. Maven resents Cal and his place as the beloved heir. we all think that we should have seen this coming. hindsight is a bitch. 

it’s absolutely something you lie in bed a few years down the road and suddenly remember and have to bask in AWE of all over again, which is why i wrote this post in the first place. god bless red queen and victoria aveyard.
