Thinking about Vincent's involvement in the Queen's Blood storyline and how it's the perfect explanation for everything going south with the game in fairly recent history even though the game has canonically been around for decades. It's genuinely so clever, I'm in love.
So, for anyone who hasn't done the full questline, Vincent is the highest ranking Queen's Blood player in the entire game prior to facing off against the Shadowblood Queen herself and the completion of the questline. (After this, ranks are adjusted worldwide because of game mechanics; Nanaki is rank 10 in the QB Arena at Gold Saucer.)
A lot of people have poked fun at this, like Vincent apparently learned the game really fast and was just naturally really good at it—but no, actually, Vincent played the game before. He's this good because he was champion level back in the 70s, back when he was human.
We know this to be the case because when you match against Lidrehl, he says "the Emerald Witch sleeps in Nibelheim with a monster of chaos, and that is where it will remain." This means that Vincent already had the card when Hojo killed him. It's not clear how the Emerald Witch came into his possession, but you don't make his rank without being a very active player, so it's clear that he was very prolific in the scene back then!
And back then, it was just a game. No mysterious deaths or disappearances. The myth of the Shadowblood Queen and the Emerald Witch was still there, as Lidrehl developed the game based on the story, but everything was fine.
This is definitely because Vincent was active in the scene, and he had the Emerald Witch. The Rebirth Ultimania implies that the Shadowblood Queen is a piece of Jenova (which I thought was pretty obvious since she calls Cloud a "puppet" and he's also apparently the only one capable of facing her head-on), and the Emerald Witch is the soul of a Cetra that serves as the silent warden to her imprisonment within the game. (Imprisoning monsters in cards is not new to the series, either, since FF8 literally allowed players to turn monsters into cards rather than fighting them.) Vincent being so active in the circuit allowed him to spread the Emerald Witch's influence through the scene and kept the Shadowblood Queen quiet, reminded her to keep her head down, kept her from trying anything at risk of being spiritually shitmixed again.
But then Hojo killed Vincent, and the Cetra warden Emerald Witch was in his deck, and that deck was tucked away with his things in Nibelheim. And so she spent thirty years unable to perform her ongoing duty to assure the safety of the planet. This time allowed Jenova the Shadowblood Queen to regain the power and confidence to manifest and start wreaking havoc again, finally building up enough strength to directly possess her current holder—during the period that Sephiroth is calling for Reunion, which presumably helped to really draw her back to full consciousness.
There's a whole detailed storyline here that makes perfect sense, with Vincent's murder literally being the catalyst leading to the resurrection of the Shadowblood Queen, and Hojo never having a clue what he'd done.
This is super interesting to me not only because it actually showed some of the more far-reaching consequences of Vincent's death, but also because it indicates that Hojo has unwittingly been Jenova's most loyal emissary for decades. He gave her his wife, his son, himself—and the first murder he ever committed served to imprison the only power holding a piece of her thought lost to history at bay, allowing her to manifest decades later with her own will and personality completely intact, something that she can't do through Sephiroth.
As it turns out, Hojo and Vincent have been opposing forces in supporting fate's "chosen ones," the forces around them capable of choosing the final fate of the planet, for much longer than either of them ever thought.
Still not a huge fan of the card game itself, but I adore the way it's been woven into the story, and strengthened it as a result.

Anyone interested in some fic recs? Here’s a few ones I recently read and am enjoying — I prefer long, slow burn stories heavy on characterization/character study with adult protagonists, so that’s what’s on the list! As always, check the ratings and mind the tags; almost all are M for themes/language and a few have E chapters. This list is not exhaustive, and doesn’t include many older works, so if you have q’s or want more recs, ask away!
EraserMight
Blood Orange by @flyingjemsaucer is my happy place right now (the author has other lovely EraserMight fics too). It’s a wonderful AU with orange farmer/vendor Toshinori and teacher Aizawa. This one is interesting and different because Toshinori is un-injured and Aizawa has his post-PLF disabilities. As a bonus, this fic also has great DadMight and Dadzawa, with David Shield and married Mic/Midnight as the best friends of the lead pair.
Closed Fist and Bleeding Heart by MoonlightAndDust (who I believe also wrote this AU twitfic). Just all around good, canon universe, angsty EraserMight.
EraserMic
Nine Lives by machiroads (also check out the author’s Naruhata Noir, which ties in to Vigilantes lore). This one is set during Aizawa’s canon post-war hospital stay and features a super fun Mirko, snarky little shithead [affectionate] Shinso, and good OCs. Honestly, the EraserMic romance is just one part of the story, and that’s fine because it’s full of other things.
And When It All Goes to Hell by @purekesseltrash (also check out the author’s Rooftop Necromancy series for a band AU). Both of these fics are examples of an author’s other hobbies/interests making the fic truly special. This one is a hockey AU and it’s great! Filled with lots of cool details, it cuts between the teenage rooftop trio and the adult Hizashi and Shouta reuniting after 10+ years to figure their shit out. Knowing some hockey stuff helps, but isn’t required at all — the drama is still there! And if you want to read about 1A students in this hockey AU, then you’re in luck because the author has that too (though I have yet to read it myself only because I prefer adult protagonists).
ToshInko
Naive Melody by @aconstantstateofbladerunner. I also like many of the author’s other works including For Kurou and Dekugate, but I think this one deserves more attention for its terrifying premise and action sequences. It keeps the core “hero society” concept from MHA and then goes and does its own thing. Also, I love the Talking Heads references — you KNOW how I get with my 80s new wave music!
Bones of You by @thoughtfulraven. A really sweet story set in the canon universe, with BFFs Inko and Mitsuki and a closer look at Toshinori’s mental state.
Nighteye/All Might
Happiness by @puddinginthemix made me like Nighteye, and that’s a feat. Set in the canon universe with canon events…I’ll just say this one made me tear up a bit.
DadMight and gen All Might
Living Well by @krisingtons is super sweet. If you want some DadMight fluff, this is where you go. (I also happen to really like the Quirk Development Theories series, especially the OC that pairs off with Inko in one of the later stories because they all work together so well to support Izuku).
Learning to Trust by @siriusfan13, a longtime favorite. Not only is this a fantastic look at All Might in the year before he agreed to work at UA, but the author links some amazing DadMight/genMight fic recs at the end of (most) chapters.
Kacchako & also Hawks (WhaaAAaa????)
Toy Soldiers by AJLenoire is a bit of a wild card on this list, but it’s really well-written. The multiple subplots within the Kacchako plot and the Hawks/OC plot are all fun, and the Hawks/OC relationship is a blast.

WIP Tag
Thanks for the tag @suzyq31! My writing has slowed down after having a burst mid Feb because of IRL things mostly but still... chipping away at my fics. Also because I only have five WIPs (that I admit to - I'm putting them in order of priority too.)
List the titles your top five priorities for WIP updates (link your fics for new readers!)
An upcoming scene, event, or detail in each fic that you're looking forward to writing
Bonus: make a poll for your followers to vote on which top 5 WIP they are most excited to see an update on!
Then tag 10 writer friends
Titles
Intertwined: Sirius keeps Harry once he rescues him from Godric's Hollow. Harry is born with mismatched eyes that will mirror his soulmate's eyes. It has a lot of tropes I'm fond of - soulmates, sirius lives, background wolfstar, more powerful enemies and more powerful harry/hermione.
Meddling With Time : Harry and Hermione are thrown into a "fixed" timeline after they travel back to the Marauders era to kill Voldemort. They thought they would be erased when their mission was completed ... instead, they're dealing with whole new lives.
Matched : Social Media AU; Voldemort defeated in the first war. Hermione was raised in France and meets Harry when they're adults through a dating app in which they both lie and say they're muggles. They find out they're not muggles... when they meet as coworkers at the Ministry.
Red Thread of Fate : Harry always wondered who Hermione's first love was - it was one of the things she never talked about and it brought them together in an unconventional way. It wasn't until 10 years later traveling back to the past that he realizes it was him.
Remedy : Post war Harry and Hermione are struggling to deal with the aftermath and learning who are they are now after all their experiences.
All Harry/Hermione pairings and all pretty wildly different. Intertwined is at the top b/c I honestly am so done with this WIP being stuck in third year. After I move to fourth year though more of my attention is going to be split between Matched and Meddling with Time.
Upcoming Scenes, Events, Details
Intertwined: We're right up to their first kiss and realizing they are in fact soulmates! Yay!
Meddling with Time: Ahh there's so much in this one. So many things I'm looking forward to publishing. I think the biggest scene and this is a spoiler but it's Hermione realizing why Harry looks so different physically when everyone else looks pretty much the same. She does not handle the realization well.
Matched: Looking forward to writing the fight and the reveal of who's been doing everything. It's going to be fun.
Red Thread of Fate: sounds bad but I'm looking forward to writing the break up scene between Harry and Ginny.
Remedy: LOL. Easy. The first sex scene.
I hope ya'll don't mind the tag but I'd love to see what you guys are working on! @tiffanytoms @amethystheart2421 @rachelfivehundred @bellairestrella @alexandra-emerson @jabean-fanfiction @pjxckson @itstopplingdomino

daiken dies AU?? 👀👀👀
Tumblr media
Daiken dies!AU is the AU of all time. It’s an AU I love to use for the purpose of character study and also to completely shake up all my existing character dynamics. Obviously, I have an uncountable number of fantasies and scenarios thought up with this AU, so I will go over my main reason that I am drawn to it, the overarching details, and then any variants at the end.
Daiken dies!AU is such a fun one for me because it completely ruins canon lol. In canon, Daiken (eldest sibling by 5 and 10 years) essentially acts as the ‘heir’ to his father’s crime lord-y ness and is taken on ‘missions’ with him from the ripe ol’ age of 11 all the way up to 18 when his father finally gets arrested. He acts as the protector to Sachi+Kazuki (both 5 years younger), and Kaito (10 years younger). When their father gets arrested, he gets full custody of them.
But if he dies, none of this can happen.
The original purpose of this AU was for me to come up for a what-if scenario for Daiken (14) dying instead of Jamie (13). The whole point of Jamie’s character is that he dies so I didn’t have a ton planned out for him, but if Daiken died…ooh boy a lot would change.
I think if Daiken did die on a mission, it would be very sudden and the siblings would have no warning or time to grief. He would simply leave on a mission, as he usually did (“I’ll see you soon, Sachi. I love you.”), and then never return, with no explanation. This would leave Sachi, Kazuki, and Kaito in a perpetual state of grief for years as they never even attend a funeral or can bury a body. They never get any time to process his death. And they knew their father was awful but they never thought he would let one of them die. All of them, but Sachi especially, view him as essentially being the one to pull the trigger on Daiken; he as good as killed him, in their eyes, and that changes them.
(An aside: I think their father did actually feel bad about Daiken’s death, bad enough that he hates the idea that he was the one that killed him, but that doesn’t make him any better of a person so!)
With the ‘heir’ gone, a new one would be in need. Kazuki, as the secondborn and next eldest son, would take over this role, but it’s very different from his older brother’s tenure. In canon, when Jamie dies, Daiken finds out weeks later when snooping around for something unrelated, and then goes apeshit about it a few weeks later in front of his father and all his friends. This same thing happens with Jamie, although he doesn’t lose his shit, but their father still decides that his kids are better off not interacting with the other guys’ kids. So Sachi, Kazuki, and Kaito are without a support system that was Daiken’s literal rock and they fall out of contact. On top of that, Kazuki is pushed harder than Daiken ever was, going on missions for days, weeks, and even months at a time, doing more dangerous things than anything Daiken did. Kazuki also has knowledge weighing on him that Daiken didn’t: their father let one of them die. He could let that happen again.
This changes Kazuki. He goes from a curious, brilliant, quick-minded, loyal kid to a suspicious one who ribs his father a lot more and defies a lot more orders than Daiken did. He still loves knowledge and learning but it’s so insanely hard to keep on top of AP classes when you miss weeks at a time and don’t have reliable time to study.
Daiken being dead and Kazuki being gone leaves Sachi to mostly fend for herself and take care of Kaito on her own. If she was close to him before, she’s way closer to him now. Flipping canon, Sachi has a job while Kazuki doesn’t because she needs money to keep the lights on and he can’t hold down a job being so absent. Kazuki and Sachi also become a lot more reliant on each other and fight less because they need to be in harmony for everything to work. There’s no older brother they can trust will guide them out of it. It’s just them. They’re insanely interdependent with each other, and coordinate everything, from work schedules to meal planning to taking care of Kaito. They always make sure someone’s there to pick up Kai and be with him whenever possible.
I also like to think that a lot of times, Kazuki gets pulled out of school randomly and without warning to go on missions. Like, he calls or texts Sachi mere hours before he has to leave like “hey, I just got informed I have to go. I don’t know when I’ll be back. I’m sorry”, and they just have to roll with it. It’s definitely an unstable environment to be in.
On the end of the other Sixes/the other criminals’ kids, Daiken’s death acts as a turning point and Jamie slowly bides his time to get out of the hellscape without kicking up a fuss like Daiken. When he finally gets to choose his own name, he goes with “Howling”. I have a very vivid image in my head of Sachi seeing him for the first time in years and just whispering “Howling.” as they lock eyes.
That’s basically all of the sweeping details. There’s infinite scenarios imagined in my head of different versions of this story playing out but this is the starting point I tend to jump off of. Some of the variants include:
BNHA variant. I dont even gaf about bnha anymore but I like this variant because it puts Sachi and Kazuki in the same school. Sachi is in 1-A and Kazuki is in the support course, and shocker shocker, Azz Adams is also in the support course as a second year. It’s the first time they’ve seen him in years, and he plays a background/non-existent part in the story until something happens on their father’s side that forces them to team up with or confront him with something. When it comes time for UA to go into dorms, Aizawa thankfully shows up when their father isn’t home, so they have the meeting without him, and Sachi and Kazuki refuse because it means being apart from Kaito, who would def. die or something if they weren’t around all the time. Their dead older brother is somewhat of a secret because it’s trauma that they don’t like going around sharing so I like to navigate that. Also I like the idea of there being some LOV attack and Sachi’s like 🤨they’re attacking in That area? That’s Yazuka territory baby.
PJO variant. My PJO au with them is so many shades of a mess because I insist on having them all still be bio siblings but they also must be demigods so I concocted some crazy stuff to keep them all together (namely, all of their parents [Azz, LS, Jacob, Jamie, Perria, Kicks, etc.] purposefully attracted gods so that they could have powerful children. Daiken, Sachi+Kazuki, and Kaito all have different godly parents, buuuuuut they’re all still related so score!). In this AU i just enjoy the idea that they pop into camp, do weird stuff, and then leave because they can’t afford to be sticking around. There’s also a time where they’re unsure if Kaito is a demigod and therefore if he can be let into camp so that’s a big issue until they confirm that yes, he is. Hooray!
Kaito also dies variant. This one could honestly warrant its own post but whatever. I came up with this one while watching Ginny and Georgia (mid show) so I guess you could consider this to be an AU of that but it really doesn’t correlate at all. In the same dramatic fashion as (spoilers for GG) Gil getting shot and Georgia getting shoved around, Kaito accidentally gets shot, straight through the chest, and murdered. By his dad. I think that he accidentally got in the way or something, the details aren’t important. But he dies, extremeeeeeeeely publically, like in the middle of town square if those things were real, and Sachi and Kazuki are both there. And Sachi sees her little brother on the ground, definitely dead, and she. goes. apeshit. She screams at her father “how many of my brothers are you going to kill?” and then beats the shit out of him, kicking, punching, etc. Kazuki helps! And then eventually someone pulls her off of him and she gets one final spit in his face. He lives because of course he does 🙄 but that’s not the point! The point of this AU is that Sachi gets to go apeshit. That’s it.
So yeah. That’s the rundown of Daiken dies!AU. This took me over a month to answer and then I sat down and typed 1.5k in basically one sitting so that explains why it took me so long. I hope you, too, dear reader, can come to appreciate the parentified older brother figure dying tragically at 14 just as much as I do 🥰

THE BIG FIND: DAY SIX
Welcome to the sixth day of our anniversary celebration!
The Big Find is a 10-day long Drarry fic-finding marathon to celebrate the blog’s first anniversary. Below is the Day 6 compilation of lost fics, both old and new, that we’ve been unable to find. Our aim is to get as much attention to these lost fics as possible, to help people finally find their missing fics! Anyone can participate by reblogging, reading through each list, providing additional fic details, and informing us the title, author, or link of a fic, and their respective number in the comment section. Happy finding!
6.1 Draco likes words and fixates on them. He’ll think like “oh this is truly an excellent word”, think it a lot, then hear another interesting word and think it a lot, and so on. (original post)
fic is not what we pretend we can’t see by gyzym
6.2 There was a test to see how Powerful you were. Harry was the most powerful wizard ever/in some time. I think the test was taken when you came of age. (original post)
6.3 Harry and Draco are dating. Harry is worried Draco will leave him. Not because he’s insecure, but because he’s that kind of person. Hermione and Ron were worried about this too, that Draco is going to break their best friend’s heart. There’s no character bashing of either Hermione, Ron or Draco, they were all just doing what they thought was best. The fic had a happy drarry ending. (original post)
6.4 ao3, Harry and Neville top Draco and Severus respectively. They have sex in a “secret” bathroom/toilet where the persons cannot see each other. But I think Draco got pregnant and kind of found out about the “father” of his child. Neville also didn’t like the identity of who he was having well “fun” with and he suggested that Snape was good for sex not forever. (original post)
6.5 WIP but maybe it’s finished now. AO3, it was M or E. Starts as 8th year fic, Harry and Draco end up dating but when they’re going to uni they break up I think. It’s a nasty encounter in Draco’s room I think (he’s living with Hermione I think?). Harry ends up taking a training or teaching position in the US and Draco stays behind but they agree to write to each other. They start to rekindle things through the letters, and Harry comes back and they are sort of getting back together and Harry ends up having to tell Draco he slept with someone while in the US while they were broken up and he’s contracted an STI. (original post)
6.6 Only Harry and Draco were in the fic, PWP. They were already an established couple. The setting was in their playroom. I remember that Draco was strapped onto a BDSM bench by Harry with an automatic dildo screwing him. Harry leaves the room then Draco climaxes but the dildo still keeps going and I think Draco called out for Harry. (original post)
6.7 Re-write of all the books, it’s a massive slow burn fic (easily more than 100k). Harry was raised in the muggle world and was never picked up by Hagrid for his first year at Hogwarts and years later, Hermione is the one that sets out to look for the Chosen One. I also remember the whole gang essentially re-learning their wizarding ways on a secluded island with some of their trusted adults as professors (I think Sirius and Remus end up teaching them a lot?). I vaguely remember the title being something about establishing a new academy (original post)
fic is not hermione granger’s hogwarts crammer for delinquents on the run by waspabi
6.8 Draco and the Slytherins formed a rock band and they got their name (death eater scum or something like that) from graffiti that was spray painted on the shop the owned which was across from Weasley joke shop ( I’m not too sure on the location). I do know that George joined the band, I think to cop with Fred’s death. Lee might also have been there. (original post)
6.9 8th year fic. Pansy (and Blaise I think) found some sort of blackmailing spell that allowed them to wander around the victim’s mind without being detected. They couldn’t choose what to see so they’d just have to hope they’d stumble upon something. They used it on draco and found out about him and harry being together secretly and used it against him. (original post)
6.10 harry is sold to the malfoy’s, specifically draco. heavy sexual torture ensues. draco pierces his genitals and at one point has harry drink a potion that transfigures him to have a vagina. i believe the title is two words and the first word begins with a U. (original post)
FOUND! 6.11 They were plotting something against the ministry (I think they snuck in or interrogated someone without permission?) and they knew they were gonna be ambushed at their place so Draco asked Harry to cast some spells (I think it included incendio to light the fireplace) to make it seem like they were just having a night in and the aurors checked their wands. Theres this guy with a briefcase and someones leaking information (pictures?) to the press but the second time they tried the code they almost got caught? Draco is helped by this guy from sports or something and they met at a pub. (original post)
6.12 Draco cursing his family name because he wants to feel pain each time someone says it to it. So i think the fic starts with Draco working as a cafe barista in the human world and harry walks into the shop and calls him Malfoy, so the curse is kinda unlocked and Draco gets sick so he has to stay under surveillance in Harry’s house. (original post)
6.13 After the war Draco was obliviated and sent to live with muggles and one day Harry finds him and is intrigued with what Draco’s life is like now and slowly Draco starts to get his memories back. Draco and Harry didn’t have a romantic relationship before Draco was obliviated. I think they (or at least one of them did) had a crush on the other. And I think it was punishment for his part in the war. (original post)
fic is not hidden in plain sight by momatu
6.14 Harry hurt, yells at Draco that he doesn’t even want his name on the door (they were in alphabetical order and dracos name came first). I think they were aurors. Harry was in love with draco. It had multiple chapters and the rating was either mature/teen. I think Draco was sort of like off hand/smthing to cause the fight (maybe their relationship?) like Harry ft he was. It was Harry pov. (original post)

Cars 2 is Still Uniquely, Tragically Bad
Of course I had to watch the sequel. See this review of the amazing Cars for my inspiration to watch a movie 13* years old that is legendary for how bad it is.
And 13* years later, my opinion has not improved. Cars 2 is so bad, though, that it’s tragically bad. It doesn’t make me angry, it doesn’t leave me frustrated, it leaves me like an exhausted parent compelled to take their bratty child’s abused toys away until the kid learns to play nicely.
It’s so, so obvious what movie this wanted to be, and that was a perfect and logical direction to take this universe: Lightning won what I assume was the American racing championship, and, as you do, now he gets to compete on the world stage. Now, he’s competing against foreign models with unique traits and attributes that he’s not used to, racing not in a standard oval, but on the streets and all the twists and obstacles that come with it.
His villain is this new slick, Italian racer that everybody loves, who’s really good at what he does, and a jerk but not a dick (and there is a distinction, trust me) and Lightning’s secret weapon is his dirt-track roots.
I sat down to watch this movie only to watch Lightning’s races, because I remember really liking those sequences as a kid. Unlike Cars, this is not my feel-good, watch-anytime movie. I’ve seen Cars 2 maybe three times since it came out?
I think I watched all of 30 interrupted minutes of this mess, and maybe 10 minutes of that was racing.
Why?
The nonsense spy thriller plot that took over this movie like a cancer. I’m not mad at the characters for their dumb decisions, I’m not even mad at the writers, this movie got so mutilated by the producers and the Powers that Be that I’m embarrassed for the characters for having to exist in this story.
It’s not even that the spy stuff is bad, though it is contrived with the exact same plot that makes no sense in Incredibles 2: Villain wants to paint a non-existent problem in a bad light to remain in power, by creating a fake hero persona to build up the thing they hate, only to sabotage it to make their thing look better.
The spy elements, and seeing how they fit into a car-dominated world, was actually really fun. The opening sequence with Finn and all his gadgets, seeing the world expand to include boats and ships and oil rigs was very entertaining…. visually.
It just should not have been in this movie. Finn and Not-Sally were clearly written for a different movie and somebody decided neither Other Spy Movie, nor Cars 2 deserved their own releases, so they mashed them together in the worst way possible.
That, and making Mater so dominant in this script that Lightning is relegated to, again, 10 minutes of his own movie being about him.
I liked some of the other elements. I liked the scraps of the other racers. I liked the existence of the lemons clashing with high-performance machines. I liked the visuals and Francesco, and of course I liked Lightning’s races, but the sum of these parts just don’t add up.
Whenever those racing scenes got good, they were kneecapped when the movie cut away to Mater’s shenanigans like the movie was ashamed to show us something decent.
In including the Other Spy Movie in this script, there’s no room for other important details like: Giving the other racers any personality or backstory or rivalry and friendships, giving Lightning legitimate concerns about his ability to win on all these new tracks and what his journey is supposed to mean here, building up any actual threat from Francesco and, since he’s not written like a dick, just a jerk, some nuance to his character and *why* he dislikes Lightning so much (American arrogance, maybe? He was almost there already).
But most damningly, this movie has no soul. Yes, people complain about all the nonsensical earth-based details they included without a thought spared for how none of it makes sense, things that were so minor in the background of the first movie that they were just a passing curiosity which are now right in your face.
Those nonsensical details wouldn’t be so glaringly bad if this movie had anything else to balance it out, and it doesn’t. It tries—it has the plot about carbon emissions and the dangers of fossil fuels, but that’s the message of the *plot*, what’s the message of the *story*?
The plot in Cars said this: A rookie racer’s arrogance and self-centeredness gets him marooned in a podunk town for a reality check, and to gain the first real friends who don’t just see him as a shiny celebrity in his whole life.
The story in Cars said this: A kid who lives his life in the fast lane and thinks he can fill all the loneliness in his life with trophies and paparazzi attention gets marooned in a podunk town to discover who he really is, what he really wants, and who really matters to him, and the tragedy of the sport he loves and all who compete in it.
Plot and Story are two different things.
So, what does the story of Cars 2 have to say? Something-something the real friends are the dents we made along the way?
I understand that they didn’t want to re-cast Doc and as a mentor, it’s almost written into his archetype to die regardless of real-world circumstances, but having an entire movie of these two on equal ground and with equal respect, working together to solve a problem neither are experts in? That’s a movie I want to watch.
Assuming that Doc also never raced any European circuits. He’d spend the whole movie building Lightning up, meeting other grand old mentors and legendary racers of a bygone era coaching their protegés. Lightning would, in turn, make new friends, and new enemies, with those foreign cars and their unique perspectives, because the first movie was sorely lacking in giving any of the background racers personality.
The soul of the movie could have been about not losing yourself chasing ambition, knowing when to call it quits before it gets too dangerous, knowing that “winning” doesn’t always mean first place (harkening back to the original), and that “losing” amongst legends doesn’t make you a loser.
And, why not, keep the lemon plot, just rework it to cut out all the spy stuff. Lemons, cars that were engineered to constantly break down would have been an interesting contrast to dynamic speed machines that had real potential. Maybe make Lightning meet a bitter not-fan who, by the powers that be, will never be a racer (oh, wait, that’s Cars 3).
People make fun of how ridiculous the plot of this movie is, and it is ridiculous, but it had so much potential and what they did to it, this Frankenstein’s Monster that we got, is just tragic. They redeemed themselves a little with Cars 3, but you can’t erase the impact this sequel had on the franchise, Pixar, and American animated movies. It changed things, irrevocably, and not really for the better.

Y'know I think if early 2023 me met late 2023 me…they would not believe the shit that I have accomplished:
develop new hobbies such as keyboard building; I've only built one so far, but I plan on building more in the future. I have a 75% keyboard that I modded a couple of months ago, and it's a joy to use
lose significant interest in using vocal synths such as UTAU over time (note: I still enjoy listening to such songs these days, it's just that I have more interesting things to work on). I still mess with singing robots but not as much, maybe the day will come when I'll actually enjoy this kind of thing LOL…maybe it's for the best
pick up animatics and motion graphics!! I am still relatively new to these, and it's been fun learning new skills to apply to my own work. I also have a couple of animatic projects currently in progress
improve my art significantly and taking art pratice more seriously (I ignored it for nearly 10+ years)…comparing my more recent art to the ones I made early this year reveals a drastic difference in my art style and the way I approach drawing. Also I should paint more background studies because they're fun to do
work on my OC projects with more effort, and I've made lots of progress with their respective stories and concepts…more details to come later on
quit FGO once and for all after 6+ years of playing it! I had 600+ SQ saved up for this one character I liked but then I lost interest over time. Still invested in the lore, but the game…not so much
get into Transformers (starting mid-September)!! I think with my interest in robot/cyborg-related media such as PGR/Nikke/Gundam, it did come full circle…I'd like to get more into the community since I've been enjoying TF media from the sidelines for the most part, but the community here on Tumblr has been very nice so far. god I love robots (and I've been getting realy comfy drawing mechs lately WOOO)

Fanfic Meta: First Draft vs Final Draft w/ Examples (1/2)
Does anybody remember those LiveJournal posts on fanfic meta? Like not actual fanfic, but meta on how to write/post a fanfic? There was a whole big table of links that I can no longer find, but I HAVE tracked down synedochic's posts on dreamwidth. These were hands down the most helpful things I've read on story structure until I discovered Helping Writers Become Authors years later. Just INCREDIBLE work.
Anyway, you still see meta on how to post fic on Tumblr, but you don’t really get writing meta much, unless someone is analyzing the text of a specific fandom. So now that I’m finally hitting the point where I can write to the level of my tastes (or near enough to enjoy reading my own work), I thought it might be fun to bring back that vibe and share some writing meta. Maybe some other fic writers or aspiring writers will find it helpful :)
My current WIP is a Lucifer story called “Can We Keep Her”, and it’s a full sci-fi/fantasy novel length fic. Like it’ll be 190k words long when all is said and done, easy. (And there’s still two sequels planned oops.) It’s my longest fic to date BY FAR, and I am utilizing every skill I’ve ever learned and still learning five more with every chapter. One of the biggest techniques I’ve been utilizing is using multiple drafts to take the story from concept to final draft. Now, I am not following the common writing advice that says to write the entire story first before editing. Maybe if I wasn’t writing fanfic that could work? Or maybe if this wasn’t my first story over 100k words? But right now, that common writing advice is firmly not for me. Instead, I’ve settled into a pattern of drafting several chapters (anywhere from 2-4 with several more outlined in detail) and then going back and editing them into a state that I’m happy with. Then, when they're edited to at least "readable", I go back to drafting. This pattern is working for me and, as a result, means I’ve gone through the outline -> first draft -> second draft -> final draft stages many times over the last few months. Which is why I figured it was a good place to start with fanfic meta :)
Some caveats on my writing system for this fic before I begin:
I did have a broad strokes outline (the major plot points) completed before I started the first draft, and certainly I had those before I started posting any chapters on AO3.
I might be an underwriter when drafting, but I’m an overthinker when outlining and editing so I don’t really struggle with plot holes. It’s more likely I’ll be able to fill in a plot hole later because of some detail I had already slipped into the story.
“Can We Keep Her” is by far my longest fic, but it isn’t my only novel-length fic or my only plot-heavy fic. I gained a decent understanding of what works for me when it comes to multi-chapter fics from my previous attempts.
All that is to say: your mileage may vary on editing chapters as you go vs writing an entire draft start to finish before editing. But the information I’m covering here should apply no matter when you prefer to edit.
It just so happened that Chapter 10 in “Can We Keep Her” provided a prime example of first draft vs final draft. I had a to rewrite the final scene in an entirely new POV, and as a result I still had the original first draft preserved in a separate document. (Typically, my first drafts get absorbed into final drafts through editing or else they get straight up deleted after I rewrite.) So I’m going to provide the first draft of the scene in this post below the cut, and then I’ll share the final version in a separate post (linked here and at the bottom of the post). Separate posts isn’t ideal, but Tumblr formatting doesn’t allow for better options. This way, though, you can open the posts in separate tabs (on desktop at least) if you prefer to view them that way.
At the end of each version, I’ll share my thoughts about them and cover things like why I chose the original POV, why I changed it, what my goals were for the scene, how the second version supports those goals better, and where I still think it could improve but ultimately ran out of time before it needed to be posted. I hope you find these thoughts helpful or at least interesting!
Original closing scene for Chapter 10 behind the cut:
Chloe was late for lunch. After waiting hours, watching time drag on, a family member of Joey Pillegi agreed at the last minute to speak with them over his lunch break. Chloe wore every professional mask in her arsenal to hide her impatience. Dan knew her too well to be fooled, but she didn’t think the grieving brother noticed. Unfortunately, the interview didn’t lead to another clue. The brother didn’t even know where Joey had been living the last six months, let alone that he’d joined a mob.
At least, Lucifer had finally texted after his therapy session had ended. ‘Apparently pink was the missing feature of the infant’s car seat’ wasn’t the most descriptive message, but it offered a few insights. Lucifer had bought a new car seat for Rory, and Rory liked it. Now hopefully, the rest of their morning had gone as well.
The penthouse elevator opened to the sounds of Rory’s happy chatter against the backdrop of the television. Lucifer spotted her immediately, but Rory remained out of sight, presumably tucked inside the largest blanket fort Chloe had ever seen.
“You two have been busy this morning,” she said.
“Hm? Oh, yes the fort.” Lucifer frowned. “The infant has this frustrating tendency to scoot herself underneath the couch. She’s bound to get herself stuck if she keeps that up!”
“So you made a blanket fort instead?” Chloe’s mouth quirked up into a smile. He’d done this before: complain about something and then do something incredibly thoughtful and sweet under the guise of removing an annoyance. She shouldn’t be surprised at this point, and yet it still managed to impress her every time.
Rory finally noticed her arrival and came crawling out of the blanket fort. “Mommy!” She sprinted over and Chloe dropped to her knees to catch her in a hug.
“Hi, baby!” Chloe grinned. Relief crashed over her as she got to hold Rory in her arms again. The morning had lasted way too long, and she was so glad she could check on Rory again. “Did you have fun with Daddy?”
“Lucifer,” said Devil corrected her. “Get her to use my name.”
“Right, sorry.” Though, internally, Chloe rolled her eyes over his continued denial.
Rory bounced excitedly on her toes. “I saw Aunt Linda!”
“I know you did. Were you good while you were visiting Linda?” Chloe stood up and asked Lucifer, “Did she give you any problems?”
“Yes,” Lucifer said. “She accused me of not listening.”
Given the context of therapy, Chloe wasn’t entirely sure who he meant. “Who did, Linda?”
“No, the infant!”
Chloe bit back a smile.
“She also accused me of arguing with her which I wasn’t doing,” Lucifer gave Rory a pointed glare, “until she said I wasn’t listening.”
Chloe leaned down to talk to Rory. “Was Lucifer not listening to you?”
Rory gave her a conspiratorial smile. “No, he didn’t listen at all.”
“At all?” Chloe gasped. When Rory giggled, she grinned.
Lucifer was far less amused. “Okay if the little demons-in-training are going to team-up together then you’re not allowed to gang up on me too.”
“I’m not making promises,” Chloe said, crossing her arms. She smirked at Lucifer’s annoyance.
“Mommy, Mommy!” Rory tugged on her jacket.
“What is it?”
“All of Charlie’s toys were gone!”
“They were? Oh, no!” Chloe had no idea what toys Rory was talking about. They might be toys back at her mother’s house or at a friend’s house or even a daycare her mother had taken her too. But playing along with the girl might get her more answers than asking direct questions.
“Yeah, they were all gone because Charlie’s mad at me.”
“You think someone’s mad at you?” Chloe asked.
Rory nodded. “Charlie is.”
“Why would Charlie be mad at you?”
“Because I flew without him.” Rory pouted either in a mimicry of how she imagined this Charlie must feel or because she didn’t like the idea of someone being mad at her.
“I see,” Chloe said, though Rory’s responses had only generated more questions. “Well, maybe we should just keep our feet on the ground and not fly for awhile. What do you think?”
“Maybe,” Rory said, stretching out the word in a very unconvincing agreement. Chloe hoped Lucifer was right and that Rory couldn’t truly fly with her wings. She seemed to grasp hiding her wings when they were in public, but if she could fly, Chloe feared the temptation would be too much for the little girl to resist.
She turned to Lucifer and in a quieter voice asked, “Who’s Charlie?”
He threw up his hands. “I have absolutely no idea. I thought she was trying to say Charlotte at first, but either that’s wrong or the girl has a poor grasp on gendered pronouns.”
“No, she seems to have pronouns down,” Chloe said, remembering Rory’s firm correction that Roger Bear used ‘she’.
“My only other guess would be an imaginary friend,” Lucifer said. “Apparently young children can have those.”
“Yeah, an imaginary friend is possible… or,” Chloe braced herself as she suggested, “it’s someone she knows back home with her mother.”
Predictably, Lucifer’s face twisted in disagreement.
“You think she was still made by your parents,” Chloe said.
“It’d have to be my father if she was,” Lucifer said. “Mum doesn’t have a way back to our universe. But I still don’t know why my father would try making a baby angel.”
Or why that angel would think you were her father and not her brother, Chloe thought as Lucifer walked off towards the bar. She could almost understand why he was having such a hard time accepting the obvious. If an angel child being born was so impossible (and for Rory to be Lucifer’s only child over the course of humanity’s entire history, it certainly seemed like angel children were pretty damn impossible), then why couldn’t something equally preposterous like God creating a toddler angel on his own be a valid explanation for Rory’s existence? The problem was, they weren’t trying to determine which explanation was more or less likely to have happened. They were looking for the explanation that best fit the evidence, impossible or not.
Rory desperately wanted to give her a tour of the blanket fort. Chloe assured the girl, she could show it off soon and they could even eat lunch under it, but first Chloe needed to talk to Lucifer. After pulling a pinky promise out of her, Rory toddled off to continue her Fringe episode, and Chloe walked over to join Lucifer at the bar.
A large stack of paper rested on the countertop, but Lucifer leaned on his elbows beside it, staring off into nothing.
“Celestial craziness or not,” Chloe began, “maybe you should start looking at this like one of our cases. Keep your mind open to all of the possibilities and follow the leads until you can rule something out.”
“Not everything is possible,” Lucifer said.
Chloe replied, “In Rory’s case, it sounds like none of it is possible. But she’s here, so there has to be some explanation for her.”
Lucifer sighed. “I know.” He turned his gaze down towards the stack of papers, but he didn’t touch them.
“What is that?”
“Just some names I need to look into.”
That was purposefully vague. Chloe reached across him and pulled the stack towards her to read.
“They’re just some names, Detective,” Lucifer repeated.
He sounded concerned, but he didn’t stop her from taking the papers or try to pull them back. Chloe really hoped he hadn’t backtracked to hunting down the mysterious Sinnerman he was so obsessed with. He had a daughter to worry about now.
The stack was indeed a list of names printed out on computer paper, but each name had a date recorded beside it.
“What are the dates for?” she asked.
“It’s when I last saw them,” Lucifer explained. “It’s probably a fruitless endeavor.”
All of the dates were from 2014. Three years ago and some change. Now, Chloe understood what this list was.
“You’re looking for Rory’s mother.”
Lucifer pulled away the stack of papers. “Like I said, it’s probably a waste of time. She might not even have a mother.”
The denial wasn’t as strong as he wanted it to be. He did realize Rory being his daughter was the only explanation that fit. He just wasn’t ready to accept it yet.
“It’s a pretty big list,” Chloe said.
“My printer can’t print on both sides,” Lucifer replied.
Chloe wasn’t commenting on the length of the list specifically. She remembered all too well just how many people he managed to sleep with in [a week? Two weeks?]. Multiply that out to an entire year since they didn’t know Rory’s birthday, and Chloe almost expected the list to be longer. Then again, not all of his sexual partners could’ve given birth, so that would’ve narrowed down the list.
“Give me half.”
“What?”
“That’s a long list to go through on your own,” Chloe said. “I can help, so give me half.”
Lucifer shook his head. “You have a murder to solve. At least one of us should get to investigate something fun.”
“That murder investigation is stalled until we can either analyze those hairs we found or someone comes forward with information. There’s nothing ‘fun’ to do on the case right now.” Chloe held out her hand for the list. “I bet I can get through my half first.”
“Really?” Lucifer said. “You think turning this into a competition will get me to hand the list over?”
Chloe shrugged. “I mean, it’s not really a competition when I have every California and federal database to work from and you’re just crawling through social media.”
“I am very adept at finding information on social media,” Lucifer argued.
Chloe smirked, already knowing she’d won. She leaned in again to split the stack of papers up. “Here, I will take the bottom half so you can continue where you left off in the beginning of the list.”
“You don’t know that I’ve already started investigating,” Lucifer said, but it was nothing more than his game night protests as he searched for a loophole in the rules that allowed him to not actually lose. He was an extremely sore loser.
“Uh oh!” Rory left her castle-sized blanket fort to run over. “Fringe stopped, Daddy. Look.” She pointed back to the TV where the current episode had ended and the question of whether they wanted to continue watching had interrupted the end credits.
“That’s because the episode’s over,” Lucifer said.
“Fix it.”
Chloe answered, “Hey monkey, how about we get lunch first? Are you hungry?”
“I want more Fringe,” Rory said, glancing back to the paused TV.
“We can watch more Fringe, but let’s get food first, okay?”
It took a little more coaxing and challenging her to a race to the kitchen before Rory pulled her attention away from the television. But then she grinned and ran off down the hallway with Chloe while Lucifer yelled after them about falling. His list of names hovered in the back of Chloe’s mind all through lunch. She didn’t know which of them would ultimately find Rory’s mother, but if she found them first, that mother was getting such an ass chewing for giving the girl up. Chloe didn’t understand how anyone could look at Rory and decide she wasn’t worth fighting for. She’d been away from the girl for just a few hours and had still missed her desperately. How could Rory’s mother not be frantic after days apart? It was infuriating.
---------------
My Thoughts:
Yes, I do use the square brackets for notes to myself. :P I told y'all this was the first draft version!
So I went with Chloe’s POV originally for several reasons. First, I just kind of default to her POV? I tend to default to women characters in general in my fandoms (maybe because I’m a woman, maybe because I’m queer, maybe both). But also Chloe’s POV is a little more clear-headed and therefore easier to show the reader what’s going on. I do step out of her POV when she becomes super emotional like in Chapter 3 when she learned Lucifer is the Devil. (If a character is too emotional, it can be hard to portray their POV so I like to swing outside of them in those scenes.) But if Chloe’s present in a scene, she tends to be my default POV.
But there’s also a downside with being more clear-headed and not as emotionally invested in the plot (yet): sometimes it means you have less interesting things to say. Which is exactly the problem here. Chloe has nothing real to add in this scene.
Well, she has exactly one thing to add and that thing is the other reason I chose her POV initially: she missed Rory while she was at work and I desperately wanted to show her relief at getting to see her again. I’m more than a little obsessed with all the parental feelings in this story, and Chloe definitely has the stronger parental feelings in this moment since Lucifer is still in conflict over Rory being his daughter.
Except Lucifer’s conflict is exactly what we need to see at this point.
In addition to showing Chloe had missed Rory as if she was the girl’s mother (the dramatic irony, of course, being that she is the girl’s mother), I also wanted this scene to end with the decision to search for Rory’s birth mother. Which it does! Technically. But it doesn’t do it very well, and I always knew I’d have to smooth that out during editing. And while it wasn’t the primary focus here, I always want more Rory cuteness (the family domestics is kind of the whole point of this fic) and I wanted some glimpses into how Lucifer and Rory’s morning alone together went. This version of the scene covers both of those things, but again, not very well. And if I want to show how Lucifer and Rory’s morning went, then why wouldn’t I use Lucifer’s POV to show that more directly?
I realized pretty quickly when I went to edit this scene, that I should switch POVs. So go check out my second post over here to see what changed when I used Lucifer’s POV. Or if you’ve already read it because you’re reading “Can We Keep Her”, then just scroll down to the bottom and check out my thoughts on the changes.

Because he obviously lives in my head rent-free this year, here is a compilation of Okada Izo headcanons I've come up with, mostly while I was supposed to be doing other things (like work).
Just to clarify, these are about the historical Okada Izo, and not based on novel, manga, movie, or TV series canon, although all of those are great interpretations of the historical person in their own way. My headcanons are not historical fact and shouldn't be taken as such, although I suppose there is always a chance some could be accurate.
If you're interested in the actual Okada Izo, I've previously made a "today I learned" post about him, which you can find here.
...
+ As a young child (before the age of 10), Izo was best described as kind and helpful at home, in the neighborhood, and at school (once he started attending), but especially with his little brother, Keikichi, who was 6 years younger. However, nobody would have described him as gentle. Even with the best intentions, little Izo occasionally showed all the gentleness of a wild boar.
+ Even when he was a child, Izo's hair was difficult to manage. It was thick and wavy (though not quite as bad as Ryoma's) and always looked a bit messy, even when properly put together using hair oil or wax. There were many periods in Izo's adult life when he wouldn't (or couldn't) spend money on buying hair oil/wax or having his hair done at the bath house.
+ When Izo was 8 years old, his mother started teaching him how to play Go, which she had learned from her father. Like his mother, Izo excelled at the game because he understood the strategy aspect of the game, but also because he remembered past games and worked hard to avoid repeating mistakes. Unfortunately, because so many of his peers thought of him as stupid, he was rarely given a chance to play. Had Takechi Hanpeita ever challenged him to a game of Go, Izo would have easily beaten him. One person who did ask him to play on occasion was Katsu Kaishu. Izo had about a 50/50 chance of winning against him.
+ When Izo's family moved from Iwamura village to Enokuchi village, he was 10 years old [historical fact] and not looking forward to starting at a new school because he understood that his reading and writing wasn't at the same level as other students'. (My theory about Izo's reading and writing can be found in this previous post.) He was worried about getting bullied and, as a result, came across as shy and standoffish at first.
+ Even though he was bullied for his reading and writing by the teacher and at times by his classmates, the other boys still wanted to be his friends: he was a fast runner (for short distances especially), a great climber, and generally good at any physical activity. Izo was the boy you wanted in your group if you were going to catch fish in the river or play generals and definitely if you were going to get into a "sword" (stick) fight with another group.
+ Izo partially made up for his difficulty with reading and writing by having an excellent memory and being able to recall texts that had been read aloud and stories he'd heard. He had a particularly large repertoire of ghost stories to scare his friends and his little brother. He continued to have a very good memory well into adulthood, including for places, dates, and small details. Unfortunately, this meant that when he did confess to his crimes after torture, and gave evidence about his comrades in the Kinnoto, he was able to provide a lot of detailed information.
+ Izo had a small jagged scar on the right side of his chest, about halfway between his clavicle and his nipple, which he got at age 12 trying to free a friend's kite from a tree. He lost his footing about halfway up and fell, hitting several branches along the way, one of which broke off and stabbed through his skin. Although the wound wasn't very serious (the branch was stopped by a rib), his friends ran off in terror. He made fun of them for this later and they didn't live it down for a long time.
+ Izo was afraid of dogs after a pack of feral dogs attacked him outside of town when he was 14 and returning late in the day. Although he didn't get any serious bites, the dogs tore his hakama and scratched his legs. Luckily, a group of farmers who were passing nearby, were able to chase the dogs away.
+ Izo's favorite food was manju. He did not like any foods that had a strong smell, such as chives [historical fact].
+ The fencing hall was the first place outside his own home where Izo was ever praised by an adult, which caused him to work especially hard to feel worthy of getting praise. He enjoyed being acknowledged for being good at something, particularly because he was never praised at school, only admonished by the teacher for being "stupid".
+ After Takechi Hanpeita opened his own dojo in 1855 [historical fact], Izo spent significantly more time there than anywhere else, including his own home. This was partially due to the fact that Takechi-sensei praised him more than anyone else, but also partially due to the fact that Izo was now teaching younger students who looked up to him. He enjoyed being able to give encouragement to others while also getting it himself for his hard work. He also enjoyed being paid a (very) small amount of money for teaching. Izo had more of a sense of belonging and family here than he had experienced anywhere else before.
+ Even though Takechi's dojo was where Izo felt most at home, he had been aware for some time that Takechi-sensei often referred to him as "that idiot" when he was speaking to other people and that even sensei's wife, Tomie, called him Takechi's "stray puppy." However, because he could not help looking at Takechi-sensei through rose-colored glasses and felt indebted to him, Izo came to think of "idiot" as a term of endearment and never complained.
+ Izo's relationship with Takechi Hanpeita was complicated. According to historical descriptions, Takechi was intelligent, well-educated, well-spoken, charismatic, talented at swordsmanship, cultured, taller than average, and handsome. Izo respected him for all of his skill and knowledge, felt indebted to him for being given a chance to travel and further his swordsmanship, and was incredibly infatuated with Takechi (which he kept to himself).
+ Izo often found it difficult to articulate his thoughts and as a teenager became more quiet and introverted if the subject was anything "complicated", such as political discussion, or required individual thought and introspection. On the other hand, he was outgoing and excitable when talking about swordsmanship, telling stories, or recounting experiences he had (such as seeing an important person in town). Much of the time, the latter was unfortunately mistaken as "bragging" and earned him scoldings from adults and generally negative feedback from his peers.
+ Because he had been accused of "bragging" in the past and because he had spent so many years being called stupid by his teachers, Izo generally tried not drawing attention to himself outside the dojo. He found it embarassing when fellow Kinnoto members made fools of themselves with the entertainers at tea houses and would never willingly join in any dancing or singing in public. He also blushed very easily so there was no way to even hide his embarrassment.
+ Izo never thought of his swordsmanship as being out of the ordinary, but he was better than most, not just because of his continuous hard work but also because of his natural speed and talent. The fact that he only received his Menkyo Chuden (middle license) at Shigakukan was an enormous disappointment to him, especially because the master called his swordsmanship vulgar and without dignity in front of everyone. Even so, he continued to work hard at any of the other dojos where he was allowed to train, thanks to Takechi-sensei helping him have those opportunities.
+ Izo often felt abandoned when Takechi-sensei would leave him behind at one sword school or another to finish his training while he (Takechi) moved on to build his contacts with shishi from across the area in his pursuit of Sonno Joi. Although Izo never complained, and on some level understood being able to continue his studies was doing him a favor, he felt hurt anytime sensei left him behind.
+ When Izo felt nervous or anxious, he often chewed his fingernails.
+ Physical appearance: As an adult, Izo was of average height at 165cm (5'5") and of slightly smaller than average build. He was a little shorter than his teacher Takechi Hanpeita, and quite a bit taller than Katsu Kaishu (who was unusually short). He had a darker skin tone and freckles / spots / sun damage from being outside a lot. He was also described as having crooked teeth [historical fact].
+ The very first person Izo ever killed was Inoue Saichiro, whom he strangled with a tenugui. If he hadn't been with a group of three others from the Kinnoto who were there to help, in addition to having been slightly drunk on the sake their group had during dinner, Izo probably would not have gone through with the murder. As it was, once their group had thrown Inoue's body into the river, Izo threw up and then didn't sleep the following three nights.
+ Izo told himself he would never assassinate anyone again, that this murder was an exception to keep Takechi-sensei safe from being prosecuted, but being so indebted to sensei for all the years of being able to travel and learn swordsmanship, he couldn't say no the next time he was asked. He felt that it would have made him ungrateful and disloyal to someone who'd done so much for him.
+ Izo first started drinking a few days after Inoue's murder because one of his comrades suggested it would help him sleep if he had a few cups of sake before going to bed. However, it didn't take long for him to start drinking regularly. This gave him a reputation for really enjoying women and booze (as much of his drinking was done in the entertainment district) and caused many problems with his comrades because he started borrowing money to cover his bills. If Takechi noticed Izo's drinking, he never brought it up.
+ The only person Izo ever hated was Tanaka Shinbei of Satsuma, a fellow hitokiri who had previously killed Shimada Sakon. Shinbei was introduced to Takechi in August 1862 and became Takechi's sworn brother that same month [historical fact]. Izo was jealous that this random person from Satsuma had immediately made a place for himself by Takechi-sensei's side. When Izo found out that Shinbei had been arrested and subsequently killed himself on 11 July 1863 [historical fact], his only reaction was, "Good."
+ Izo had a fairly long (about 3.5 inches) scar going across his left forearm where he was cut during the assassination of Honma Seiichiro. A group of the Kinnoto had cornered Honma, but as an experienced swordsman their would-be victim put up a desperate fight. In the course of this, Izo was pushed back into a building and the tip of his blade caught on the cross-beam of the overhanging roof, allowing Honma to cut him while he was defenseless. The only reason Izo was not more badly injured was that one of his comrades had managed to stab Honma in the side at almost the same instant he brought down his sword - otherwise, Izo might have lost his arm. He later often wondered whether that might have been for the better.
+ Izo left Kyoto and went to Edo in 1863 because Takechi-sensei had left for Tosa once again. Without sensei in Kyoto, Izo's position among the Kinnoto was on shaky ground and he felt unwelcome: people who had harbored negative feelings about him as a person and about his murders on Takechi's orders were no longer afraid to voice their opinions once Takechi was not there to protect him.
+ Izo's time as Katsu Kaishu's bodyguard may have been the happiest part of his adulthood because Katsu-sensei never treated him any differently than his disciples, never talked down to him, and never called him stupid or an idiot. In fact, sensei went out of his way to explain things and include Izo in conversations. It was the first time someone made an effort to do so without expecting anything in return or being patronizing. Izo stopped drinking almost entirely during his time with Katsu Kaishu.
+ If Izo had to choose between fight or flight, he would have always chosen flight if he was alone and fight if he was with someone else, especially someone he was protecting. If he chose to fight, Izo's adrenaline would be so high that he later could not remember any details, and while he would try to play it off and make light of it, it would take a long time to calm himself after. Because the adrenaline rush made Izo overly excited and giggly, something he couldn't control, the behavior was often mistaken as "enjoying killing."
+ Izo left his position as Katsu Kaishu's bodyguard because of a misunderstanding following one such adrenaline rush: after saving sensei's life when the two of them were attacked late at night, Izo was smiling and Katsu admonished him: "You should not enjoy killing people." Having expected praise for a job well done, and being caught entirely off guard, Izo could only offer: "If I hadn't been there, sensei's head would be rolling in the street." When Katsu-sensei did not respond, Izo's mind was left to fill in the blanks. In the end, he somehow convinced himself that he did not deserve good things to happen to him, and that he needed to leave before he caused bad things to happen to Katsu-sensei. He never knew that Katsu Kaishu regretted not having apologized and prevented him from leaving [historical fact].
+ After Izo left Katsu Kaishu, his life spiraled downhill. Unsure what to do next, he returned to Kyoto where he realized he couldn't actually go to Tosa's residence in the city because he was considered a deserter from his domain.
+ Learning that Takechi-sensei had been arrested in Tosa in September 1863 left him even more despondent. The money he still had (some remaining pay from Katsu Kaishu and some money he had borrowed from Takasugi Shinsaku) did not go all that far for lodging and everyday costs and it wasn't long before Izo found himself on the street, worrying not only about his next meal but also his increasing need for alcohol because he had again started drinking heavily. Eventually, he sold the blade of his long sword, the more valuable of the two, to tide himself over. Even so, there were days he only ate by stealing stale food offerings at shrines or graveyards.
+ Around the end of winter (early February 1864), Izo started living in an abandoned home, a former merchant's residence that had been sealed off by the Kyoto magistracy because the family and their two servants had been killed by thieves. At least here he was able to sleep next to a brazier to stay warm, and selling some of the smaller items left behind in the home gave him a little income to cover food and drink. However, he was caught by the magistrate and charged with burglary after neighbors reported someone suspicious had been going in and out through a loose fence board.
+ Izo's time in the Kyoto jail was absolutely miserable. He wasn't beaten during questioning because he readily admitted to living in the abandoned house and selling items found there, but he spent the entire first week experiencing severe alcohol withdrawal.
+ After two weeks in the jail, due to its current back-log of cases, Izo received his punishment for burglary: 100 strikes and being tattooed as a criminal. After another five days, the period required to let the tattoo heal, he was brought to the edge of town to be banished, where a metsuke from Tosa waited for him to take him into custody and return him to Tosa.
+ Back in Tosa, Izo held out against severe torture for nearly 10 months, refusing to give any information about Takechi and the Kinnoto because he still felt indebted to sensei for all the years of support and giving him ability to travel to further his swordsmanship. However, he readily offered information about his own crimes committed in Kyoto, which he claimed were his own doing and not ordered by anyone else.
+ When Izo found out that Takechi had approached his brother and father asking for their help to poison Izo so he wouldn't give up any information, his world crumbled. For the first time in his life, he had to confront the fact that Takechi, to whom he felt so indebted, had only used him and thought nothing more of him than as disposable tool for his own ends. Heartbroken and angry, Izo gave up any information he had about Takechi and the Kinnoto, and then withdrew into himself waiting for his execution day. He wouldn't even make any effort to eat when he was offered food, or respond if anyone spoke to him, but he would occasionally ask to speak or send a letter to Takechi-sensei [historical fact], some part of him still holding out hope that there was some kind of explanation sensei could give him.

FUUUUCCCKKKKKK okay just watched ep.10 and now I'm just genuinely impressed at how this show balances a) it's animation budget and b) the wildly different tone changes based clearly on the kind of story beats they know audiences likely expect from this type of story.
To a) it's just really cool seeing that they probably had to reel back the animation costs and, accordingly, a lot of scenes are animated in a far looser less detailed style usually with noticeably fewer frames. But it seems like the production team are like, genuinely crazy enthusiastic about animation so things go super off model but in a bunch of different really fun ways that all communicate maximum characterization for that shot or scene, or when they need to just hold a shot for a long time with no frames of animation aside from some small incidental background elements they look like shit you'd gawp at in the art book so it's still dramatic as hell.
To b) though, I dunno, they subvert expectations without falling directly and irrevocably into the trap of being chained to the ghost of said expectations, constantly twitching in paranoia of the eyes peeking from the shattered 4th wall. Rather than the result simply being the opposite of what you might expect, it's like, the result goes down differently because the whole situation is fundamentally a different kind of story beat than what you might have expected.
Like okay, one of the really common scenes in post apocalypse fiction that has over the years just made me not want to even bother is like, when the characters find themselves among new friends, safe, happy, relieved. And then something sweeps in and murders everyone brutally and rips that happiness away. The direct subversion is when that disaster is averted and everyone is fine. These two versions of the events repeating in an endless cycle of trying to subvert the other each becoming more bleak and empty with every cycle of fiction to come out.
And I dunno, there's been a LOT of moments that it seemed like things could go either of those ways, and every time it has gone neither. Man discovers his 1 year old child is still alive. After celebrating the reunion, everyone is attacked by a monster in the night. It turns out the baby was the monster. In many stories either they gotta kill the baby (or do so unwittingly), or they're just like well phew!!! He'll learn to control it someday ^_^ or they say the latter and then the baby kills them after all, blah blah blah. But in this case they don't kill the baby, but the guy DOES willingly shatter the peace by murdering one of his former friends for tangential reasons. And it's like, shit dude, I was on edge the whole time cause clearly SOMETHING BAD was gonna happen. And for that thing to be a lateral step that still ties into everything going on so it's not a complete ass pull, that maintains a sense of all these little pockets of society operating with their own history that started before the camera got to them and will continue long after is like. Shit dude! That's honestly kinda rare! If they're gunning for multiple seasons I don't know if it's something that could be kept up, but it's damn exciting right now that's for sure.

HEARD A NEW STORY ABOUT YOU FROM TEN YEARS AGO.
Ahh another one that magically popped up and with no proof at all no doubt. It’s always fun hearing new stories even if I already know how they are going to go. It’s always one of four ways and I’ll break them down with the actual truth of what really happened.
1) The thing that never happened.
Pretty self explanatory really. This is the story you’d see on r/thathappened really. It’s a made up tale either a complete work of fiction. Just a tale to add to the mythos or something they themselves made up out of a dream for whatever reason.
2) the thing you actually did or the tale you witness somewhere else.
It’s something that they saw happen on some group they were on and they erased the name of the people involved, of the group, and the year and inserted me and what they need to in order to do the story right. Also can be something they themselves did but are trying to change the narrative so it was me instead of them so they can muddy peoples memory and separate themselves from it while keeping someone in the frame so those that don’t remember the fine details can spread this version.
They have zero evidence of anything and the minute you question it they either get defensive as hell of delete it. A good example of this is that Katherine McNamara lady. She took the tale of when she and her friends were annoyed by one sixteen year old girl and sent a groomer and pedo in the group after her. She removed her friends, made me into the pedo, and her I to the victim. But she fucked up when she claimed the group was her own, on jcink, was a supernatural group, and discord was involved. When you question it and learn the group’s main was still up on tumblr and it was a slice of life site and discord wasn’t even public in the time she’s claiming, she instantly deleted the post and distanced herself from the tale but some people wanna believe it despite knowing it’s completely fake.
3) the mountain out of a mole hill.
This is pretty much the thing that might have annoyed someone and they/others made it into a Shakespearean drama. This from my experience are your ALR and WOTNA type dramas.
On the former I message someone asking if they saw my reply as I was waiting in their own, if not it’s cool I’m just letting them know. They tell me they are so sorry and and missed it but will reply right now. I then send two other messages each someone between 7 to 10 days apart again asking they they wanted to continue the thread and if not it’s cool I’ll just consider it done and the last that I’m dropping after seeing them reply and make other new threads and won’t post with them again unless they start the thread. Which didn’t even annoy the person I was sending it to, it annoyed the girl who was shipped with their character as she felt I was trying to move on to the ship despite having a thing with another female character and my character openly state and be known as a close friend almost little brother like figure for the character who according to her I was trying to steal the ship of. And some how she got the whole staff team to believe I was harassing multiple members and sexually doing something that was never clear. Only to later on be told by the staff and members that they person who started it all was known as being dramatic and insanely toxic but she had pull with the main admin so what she said went.
The WOTNA drama has been told to death and just like the ALR, staff and those involved have openly admitted it was made up drama, people spun their own made up tales to be involved in it, and it was good gossip. At the heart of it, it really was just my friend I was posting with bitched he didn’t like how I posted and made my character do a lot to progress the thread, he never told me this, kept bitching to one staff member about it, and that staff member spread it to others who then through out trigger words drama. Both my friend has said a lot of the stuff claimed he didn’t even know and never said and staff even said they were pretty sure so and so said it and it had to be true always also admitting when they had drama with someone else they just blamed it on me then would switch back to blaming someone else when they had drama with that person.
Small little things that range from an annoyance, lack of communication, or just born of jealousy that gets packed on and on til it’s this mutated thing that it never was but everyone thinks of as true. At least until it’s broken down and even then no one really knows what actually happened until you break down all the layers and see it all started over this small stupid thing.
4) The I hate you so fuck you.
This can be anyone from former friends, former staff/members, friend of a friend, someone you never interacted with or knew existed, or the person who is irrelevant trying to use you to be someone important. AKA a social climber.
They don’t know you but hate you because it’s popular and people will listen to or read in this case, anything with your name attached to it. They don’t realize you’re the draw and the one getting all the attention. The more they go off on you the more you get people both just over it and not caring and people wanting to hear your said and feeling bad for you having such a crazy loon wanting to ride your d. I call them fans and finally found out how to monetize them so getting some extra money every week thanks to them. It’s great, keep going haha.

Tell us more about your Tav! You said she's followed you for 10 years?
First of all, thanks for askin’! I quite never got the chance to talk so much about Rey <3 So here’s a quick explanation about her origins, and under cut for more background stuff, may someone be interested.
Back in 2013, I started to play Neverwinter online. It was 22nd December when I created her as my first character in the game. An elf mage, as usual (there’s not the sorcerer class). A bit later I got the Knight of the Feywildpack, that allowed me to choose a specific sub-race, the Moon Elf. I had fun with this character, I completed as many modules as I could.
Tumblr media
Then in 2015 they released the Underdark module – the first one written by R.A. Salvatore himself.
Until then, Farelya – Rey – was just a character I played in a game. Then I started writing fanfics, based on quests of the  Mage Engine campaign (tied to the Underdark one) – the longer one from a quest in particular, “A view of Menzoberranzan”, where you’ve to disguise yourself as a Lolth priestess, followed by Drizzt as your “prisoner”, and retrieve Gromph Baenre's Grimoire from a drow outpost.
Slowly, I started to add details to details. Her wicked amulet, that holds the soul of a black dragon, eager to be fed of her fears and terrors – eager to indeed consume her and wholly possess her body, destroying her soul and mind; her over-protective pseudodragon, Vulthuryol (name I chose from one of the secret dragons in Skyrim), her familiar – and details of her past, why she’s afraid of her own amulet, and why her eyes have two different colors.
I wrote 30+ pages just for THAT oneshot and I’ve yet to finish it.
But yep, I’m currently playing her adventures in the Sword Coast – and in Space now, as well (the new module is named Spelljammer. Not really my cup of tea, honestly, I prefer the classic fantasy to the science one) xD
Here we go with some background stuff, then :D Be careful, there are some gruesome parts
She was born in the Moonwood, as an only child. Magic flows in the female part of her family, indeed both her mother and grandma are sorceresses – while her father is a ranger. She started to practice very early to gain more and more control over her powers, all while occasionally wearing magic-repression cuffs to keep her wild magic at bay. She feared she may hurt others, but yet she was eager to learn.
Later in her life, she often visited Silverymoon and the libraries of the Lady’s College, at least before starting her life as an adventurer – Moon elves have a great wanderlust, after all.
She was in reverie, after a long journey, when she got kidnapped by a group of young (and crazy) Red Wizards apprentices, who had fun using her basically as guinea pig – that’s how she lost her right eye. They tried to break her. Left her to starve, drugg*d her, and pulled her eye off while she was still conscious (totally groggy due to all the alcohol they gave her to drink, obviously against her will. That’s why she doesn’t drink alcohol at all, since then. Not to mention Volo's attempt to "help" her - attempt that triggered her so badly that it resolved in his face being almost burn to crisp.)
Thanks to an amulet her master gave her years prior, she managed to (barely) escape, get found and healed by Mielikki's priests. Unknowing to her, that same necklace held the soul of a black dragon (not really a phylactery, tho) that actually could help her increasing her powers, but at the cost of little pieces of her humanity.
That’s when she got to know the creature that, later on, would become her familiar and closer confidant – a pseudodragon that she’d name Vulthuryol.
She went back to find those mages and got a (quite) gruesome revenge, taking one of the most beautiful eyes of them to replace the one she lost (the now-gold one).
Since then, Vul vigils over her reverie, allowing her to rest when she needs (this, until she got closer to Halsin).
Aaand that’s all, guys! If you want to know something more about my Moon baby, please let me know <3

Hey you, it’s me. We are on day 2! Back into the LIKES…
I actually lost our place and the page completely refreshed 🙃 but I trusted the process! Scrolled back down! Did a bit of drawing to pass the time! And here we are again.
Worth noting is the interesting fact that I cleared our enough likes yesterday to have us at 10001 ✨ new beginnings indeed. Love some good ol’ fashioned numerology. Like a lil god wink.
just a few posts in and I come across a post that I would have ‘liked’ in present day. Discussing working on ourselves, questioning our beliefs/conditioning. Recognizing that doing that work/questioning is hard but should not be seen as Too Hard! I’m questioning my belief that I Don’t Finish Things by going through this archive of likes. I am unplugging from anywhere I bought or sold that belief, right or wrong. I’m aligning myself with a Maria who sees things through. Work worth doing
"someone else’s hope is hanging on your follow thru" of that hits. What great timing for that message. The synchronicities man…. // "no tree, it is said, can grow to Heaven unless it’s roots reach down to Hell" from Jung. That feels like a similar message of inner work, community work and collective effort to grow
so many posts with architecture, free information, factoids, beautiful objects. Wow I learned so much thanks to this site and the internet
I saved a vides with a beautiful cover of “she keeps me warm" set to a music video of a queer relationship blossoming. And now, 10 years later, I have my own beautiful queer love who keeps me warm! There has to be some inner child healing happening there! (I’m not crying you’re crying)
starting to see a lot more fandom posts - Zelda and HP and FMA alike. All of that is still so close to my heart haha that did not change!
finding fun posts from 10 years ago to show my partner. What sweet bliss. (Makes me think of the post "baby girl, I know so much fandom history you wouldn’t give a shit about"
in and among the funnies is also great poignancy: seeing full images from artists and exhibitions that I have forgotten about, but small details that I sketched out or I tried to mimic at one time or another. Those details lived on with me even when the memories and first impressions did not
