Re-watching Dragon Prince and seeing the love and care that went into General Amaya just makes me mad about the DOTA cartoon's treatment of Marci all over again.
The creators of Dragon Prince took the time to bring in ASL interpreters so that they could animate characters signing accurately. Other characters are respectful of Amaya's deafness, and are careful to always face her when talking unless she has an interpreter with her. She is treated with the respect owed to a general and close advisor to the king. And she has agency. She makes decisions throughout the story, and they matter. She's a full character, with desires and fears and personality, and her existence in the story matters.
And then there's Marci, whom you could replace with a dog and not notice much of a difference, because her relationship to Mirana is basically just the "a boy and his dog" trope. Because she can't talk, and therefor she doesn't get to be a person.
General Amaya might not be perfect rep for Deaf people (I've seen complaints that a lot of important nuances to the ASL are missing because the show used hearing interpreters, rather than consulting with Deaf people on the animation directly) but damn, at least they fucking tried.
The bare minimum either show needed to do was have some way for their mute character to communicate, so that they could have a personality. The bar was on the ground. Dragon Prince decided to jump it like a hurtle anyway, while the DOTA team dug a fucking tunnel.
