#Dick and Cass are such an underated parallel i love them
Text
When people say that Cass really understands Bruce you have to get that they mean she REALLY understands Bruce
I would consider her and Dick to be the ones who understand him the best but Dick had to learn through years and years of being his partner
but Cass... she just like gets it in a way that none of the others really do
Tumblr media
this is pretty soon into them knowing each other and she already intuitively knows that Bruce's anger is often just a mask for guilt/sadness which is something Dick probably took a while to figure out back in the day
I really wish DC would explore Dick and Cass more I would love to see Dick jealous of Cass and Bruce's relationship the same way he was with Tim
except it would be even more interesting because they're kind of a nature vs nurture debate with Cass understanding Bruce as her nature while Dick's understanding of him comes from the years they spent together

I
I just had a slightly terrifying very angsty thought;
What if Bruce was killed in public while in Brucie persona
Like, I Know that's just impossible, but Somehow someone crashes a gala or assassinates him during a public outing or like during a speech right after a big battle has already happened and he's Tired. The last one seems like it has a Chance of happening.
Gotham Loves their prince in his tower. Their Brucie Boy. The citizens would be distraught. The Waynes, back together, but at what cost? He's with his parents, but now all his children are orphans, again. If he was killed in a large crowd, there's a mob after who pulled the trigger. If none of the kids are around, some stay by his side to try and help, but ultimately...
His family would be-gosh-broken(? I haven't read any stories where he dies so I'm not actually sure how the family reacts in cannon), definitely angry and loosing sleep looking for the killer, Jason definitely has his guns ready and loaded for the bastard's skull. Damien. Damien hasn't lost family like this, let alone his Father. Who seems so impossible to kill, but dying. Dying like his grandparents did, too. Just-so many parallels with baby Bruce and Damien in this situation, maybe he was even there, also tired from fighting the good fight, but...Alfred is-Alfred has lost 2 house masters, all these kids have died at least once, but not Bruce. This time it's his-Master Bruce can't tell him to stay in the mansion. He's taking a shotgun and going with Jason. None of the kids have seen Al like this. Unbound by Bruce's house rules, Bruce wasn't keeping Alfred safe, he was keeping the world safe from Alfred. I'm not well versed in Cass, Steph, Tim, and *reads smudged ink*sunray boy w actual powers, but at the least Cass is Pissed, someone that understood her needs and took care of her and taught her, gone. And it was Bruce. Whoever did this, is never seeing the light of day again. And Dick...the first rob, Nightwing, the oldest, the one that's seen the most of it only outshown by Al. He......
And the villains of Gotham? Mmmmhm. Some are just like every other Gothamite and wouldn't Dream of laying a hand on Brucie Baby(what kind of scum goes after Brucie Wayne?! LET ME OUT-I'LL FIND THEM MYSELF-), some know his identity as Batman and with them, some even respect him considering they get their ass kicked. And of course the ones that don't care about another billionaire dying. Actually, I have the villains more thought out than like anything else (I like bad guys, sue me)
Mr Freeze-Bruce helped take care of his wife. He's not ok with this death and...maybe he can experiment on bringing the 'ice lad back to life
Bane-uhhh I'm not sure on this. He knows his identity, he has some respect for him?? (I'm gonna admit it's been a while since I've rotated Bane in my mind) Maybe not, he broke his back pretty good once and the whole I was born in the shadows you merely adopted it? Is that just a movie thing? More shadows for Bane?? More lonely in the shadows??
(wow I instantly lost steam when I started this villain section -n-)
Harvey-Now this is the one I've thought the most on(because Angst). Harvey Dent is Horrified and Angry. That was Bruce Wayne! That was His Friend! That was BRUCIE WAYNE! He's breaking out and flipping a coin to either go to a funeral or finding the bastard that did it. Maybe Both.
Joker-oh joker. Oh John Doe-eyed-for-your-nemisis clown prince. Sometimes he knows his favorite person under the mask and sometimes he doesn't. It really depends on his mood. If he doesn't know he doesn't care. Brucie Boy's number 1, would he ever target the other prince?(has he?)would he care if someone else did? Don'know. Maybe he figures it out through the absence of Bats in the weeks following and he goes to the bitch that ended his fun. Maybe he does know and is already on their doorstep, gas and c4 ready. Really? Idk. It's Joker, Have Fun With It
Anyway, where's the fic?(and if someone makes it or finds it can I pleaseeee be @ 🙏)
Omg this was supposed to be short, but I went back and added more ADD rambling to it. This took too long to write😴
😴😳 MAYBE SOMEONE EVEN SPILLS TGE BEAMS ON HIS IDENTITIES! ACCIDENT OR OTHERWISE!😳😑😴

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
“Ok, but like, does it stack, or is it just a song thing?”
“I mean, if you take it literally, it stacks.”
“That’s crazy outrageous. How much shit is this girl getting?”
“Or guy.”
“Or guy?”
Tim whipped out his phone and tapped his calculator. “Let’s see. Twelve, plus the quantity eleven times two, plus the quantity ten times three, plus the quantity—”
“Why the hell would you do it that way?” Damian grimaced.
“Well, how would you do it, then?” Tim snipped.
“One, plus one plus two, plus one plus two plus three…”
“No, no, no.” Dick shook his head. “Just go in order of the lyrics. One, plus two plus one, plus three plus two plus one, plus four…”
“The word plus has become utterly meaningless to me,” Duke announced.
Cass exchanged a look with Jason. He raised his eyes to the heavens; she hid a giggle.
“Wait a second, I’m an idiot!” Tim yelped.
“Correct,” said Damian.
Tim ignored him. “It all parallels. Ok, two times each quantity of twelve times one, eleven times two, ten times three, nine times four…”
Damian and Dick were both still furiously jabbing at their calculators.
“Three hundred and sixty-four!” Tim cried in triumph, holding up the phone.
“Dammit,” Damian muttered.
“Holy shit,” said Duke.
“True love, more like sugar daddy,” Dick mused. “How much does all that cost?”
“Now or when the song was written?”
“What are even the ethics of buying someone dancers and milkmaids?” Duke wondered “Like, animals are one thing, but are all the people, just, like, hired or were they actually enslaved?”
“Let’s go with hired. But how do you hire a lord?”
“Shouldn’t it be three hundred and sixty-five, Drake?” Damian asked, still determined to prove Tim wrong, “Since the partridge line is repeated one more time?”
“But that one is just musical flare.”
“How can you call that musical flare, but not all the other repeats?”
“Fine!” Tim threw up his hands. “Three hundred and sixty-five. My calculations were still faster, brat.”
“This is what we’ve come to,” Jason muttered, too soft for anyone but Cass to hear. “This is our semblance of sanity?”
She giggled again, shrugging at him to say she didn’t mind. Her brothers were crazy and funny and she liked it that way. But the pinch between Jason’s eyes meant he couldn’t handle the conversation much longer, so she took his hand and tugged, saying, “Dance with me.”
“Gladly.”
The other four didn’t even notice them leave, too busy arguing whether the true love had had to pay delivery fees for all the gifts.
Cass didn’t usually enjoy galas. In fact, she, like her siblings, tried to get out of them every other time of the year. But for some reason, Christmas galas hit different, as Tim would say. She loved all the green boughs and glittery lights and pretty painted ornaments. The various shades of the same six colors (white, green, red, gold, silver, black) were calming to process compared to all the bright neons and pastels that she’d see other times of the year. Eggnog was also much tastier than champagne, and there was usually gingerbread, her favorite kind of cookie.
But the best thing about Christmas galas was the music.
Ordinary galas had bland, benign background pianos or violins. They played songs Cass could dance to, but not songs that were fun to dance to. But not at Christmas. At Christmas, they played lots of big, broad songs, with brass and sleigh bells and quick beats that she could swing to, and dramatic, full, swooping songs for a waltz. Cass could fly to Christmas music.
She didn’t know the tune the band had just struck up, but she could feel that it was already quick and fun, and was beaming even before she and Jason started to dance. The trumpets were loud and proud, showing her the music’s heartbeat so she could step in time.
Jason was very fun to dance with. He enjoyed it almost as much as Cass did, and knew lots of fancy twists and turns. He also wasn’t afraid to lift her off the ground and spin with her, and she’d laugh in delight, and he’d grin right back. He also sang along under his breath if he knew the song, not even aware that he was doing it, but teaching Cass the words nevertheless.
They danced three songs together, working up a good sweat and making Cass’s neat bun fall out, before the fourth song began with a series of high, tiny chimes, and Jason groaned.
“Not this one,” he said, leading her off the floor towards the others. “I love you, Cassie, but not this fucking song.”
A middle aged woman with a sprig of holly in her hair shot Jason a horrified look as they passed. Cass hid her giggle behind her hand.
Halfway to the table, Dick came running up to them, crying, “Cass! Cass, come on, I gotta dance this one with you!”
“You’re a menace, Grayson,” Jason called, trading her off with a shake of his head. “One too many concussions.”
“Bah humbug to you too, Scrooge!” Dick shot back, pulling Cass back to the dance floor right as the music really got going.
It was another swing, one that most people were taking half-time, so naturally she and Dick took it double. Towards the end, he started spinning her and spinning her, so much that her skirt stayed out in a bright green plume, no time to settle until the very end, when, rather than a graceful dip, she stumbled dizzily into his arms, both of them laughing too hard to speak.
“Whoo!” Dick cheered as Cass got her balance back. “That was fun.”
“Very fun,” Cass beamed, breathless. “But need a drink now.”
“Then shall we, my lady?” Dick bowed at the waist and offered her his arm.
“We shall,” she grinned, taking it.
They headed over to the refreshments table, Dick ladling a cup of punch for himself, and Cass taking a flute of eggnog. Plus a few gingerbread cookies. To share. Probably. Maybe.
Not, it turned out.
They made their way back to the others to see the argument still ongoing. Damian was in Tim’s face over the particulars of each species of bird, and how the price of doves was not equivalent or even indicative of the price of turtle doves, and Tim was shouting right back that if he couldn’t find the answers, he had no choice but to extrapolate. Duke was trying to get between them and calm them down, and Jason had given up, dropping his forehead against the table.
“Are you gonna tell me what type of dancer, too, brat?” Tim was saying. “Whether the pipes were metal or wood? What kind of drum? Just chill about the particulars!”
“I will not settle for a subpar answer when you have the ability to give me an accurate one!”
“I’m telling you, I don’t have the ability to—”
“Tim, Dami, you’re both beautiful,” Dick said, accomplishing what Duke could not and pushing them apart. “It’s hypothetical anyway, so as long as Tim gets close enough in his comparisons, I’m sure the rounded total won’t be far off.”
Cass cocked her head and signed, What are you actually doing?
“Trying to figure out exactly how much it costs if you’re the true love from Twelve Days of Christmas,” Tim answered, completely casual although Cass was certain it was not a very normal activity.
“I hate to even ask,” Duke interjected, “but do we include the value of the laid eggs and the milk?”
“I don’t think so,” Dick said. “He probably wasn’t paying to make sure the geese were actually laying eggs at the time they were received, so the fact that they can lay eggs is just covered by the cost of each goose.”
Jason lifted his head and banged it against the table. “It’s. Just. One. Stupid. Song.”
“Come on, Jay, aren’t you even a little bit curious?”
Jason turned his head to squint at Tim. “If I ever was, all your nonsense has completely ruined the answer for me.”
“Do you have a better way to pass the time?”
“No,” he admitted reluctantly.
“Then shut up or help us figure this out. If the swans are swimming, we assume the receiver already owned whatever they were swimming in, or was that purchased too?”
Cass ruffled Jason’s hair as she started away, ignoring his whine of Take me with you! and smiling to herself. She wandered through the ballroom, admiring the gowns and suits, until she spotted the tall figure she was looking for.
Bruce turned before she reached him, as if he had sensed her presence. He smiled, excused himself from the group he was speaking with, and closed the distance to give her a hug.
“Enjoying yourself?”
“I am. Jay’s not.”
Bruce scanned the crowd, and Cass knew he’d seen her brothers when his mouth twisted into a wry grin.
“We’ll head home soon. What are they going on about this time?”
“The Twelve Days of Christmas song.”
He winced, obviously recognizing just how absurd and detailed a conversation his sons could spark on that topic.
“At least it’s kept them from pranking anyone.”
Cass giggled. Tim and Jason could come up with very good pranks when they put their minds to it. She thought they were very funny, but the fancy people at the balls rarely did, and Bruce didn’t like to make them too mad. Still, it would have been fun if one of them had put mistletoe in Dick’s hair again.
The music changed from a quick song to a slow one, in three-quarter time, and Cass beamed up at her father, holding out her hands.
He smiled and took them, leading her out to the floor and starting to dance.
Of all the people in her family, Cass loved dancing with Bruce the most. He wasn’t as energetic as Dick, or as showy as Jason, but she could see in his posture and his smile that he was dancing just for her. It made her feel special and loved, that he always made sure to dance with her, and always was so happy to do so. She had to share him so often, with her brothers, with Steph and Harper and Cullen, with Selina and soon their new baby, with all his friends. Dancing was the one time she could have him all to herself.
The dance ended, as dances always did, but that was alright. Cass beamed at her dad, and he smiled back, soft and warm. Then he winked and told her to gather her brothers. She had to stand on tiptoe to kiss his cheek, then skipped off back to the table, snatching more gingerbread on her way.
This time she saved one cookie, giving it to Jason as she told them, “Go home now.”
Everyone cheered, except Damian who asked Tim three times whether or not he’d factored in what region of France the hens had come from, as he’d found there was a wide variation of price.
“Yes, Dami, I just took the mean, calm down.”
They continued discussing things until they were out in the cold air, and had to stop to run to the car, where Alfred and Bruce already sat waiting.
“I see you all found a way to entertain yourselves,” Bruce said mildly.
Jason pointed a finger at him, gesture as threating as if he held a knife.
“If you make me go to a party with these hooligans ever again, Bruce,” he warned, “you owe me reparations equal to whatever the hell crazy total Timbit figures out, adjusted for inflation.”
“I…”
“Adjusted for inflation?” Tim looked up from his phone in shock, tapped a few more keys, and slowly shook his head. “Yeah, no, B, Jason’s definitely not worth that much to have around.”
“Tim,” Dick started, “be ni—oh.”
Bruce shook his head, smiling fondly. “I’ll figure it out,” he promised. “You’re priceless to me, Jaylad.”
“Shut up,” Jason muttered, turning pink.

Braaaaaaains...
Jason Todd is legally – and biologically – dead. His family noted his lack of pulse at three in the morning, inside the cave, his body laid out on a table with medical instruments.
No, really, tell him something he doesn't know.
What else crawls out of a grave moaning and groaning?
Or, Jason thought his family full of the world's greatest detectives was smarter than this. Apparently not.
****************************************************************
It had been an ordinary night. Calm. The stage for very little costumed crime and barely more regular, non-insane crime as well. Half the menagerie that made up Dick's loving ragtag bunch of younger siblings had even taken the night off.
Nothing should have make him arrive to silence this thick, to this faint echo of sniffling.
He sprinted after the noise.
Damian's fine, left before me. Duke didn't go out, nor did Steph. Babs spent the evening with Cass in the cave, Tim swept the bowery and said he was going to stop by Jason's place to-
He collided with a shaking, tear stained Tim right outside the medbay.
There was a body on the closest table. Others around it, crying, pacing, muttering in denial.
Dick couldn't look.
No, no, please, please no. I can't do that again. I can't!
Scarred skin, too pale – to be Duke or Cass – by death. His breath hitched. No. He. Fuck.
He knew those scars. Those arms. That chest and that fucking Y from navel to shoulders.
“Dick! Jason... he was...  I found him in his apartment. And I brought him to the cave... but... Jason doesn't have a pulse. He's... cold...”
Dick stumbled.
No.
No, no, no, that... that couldn't be real.
He caught himself on his little brother. Brought himself into a hug too tight, as painful as the arms gripping his ribs and back. A grip meant for a lifesaving light at sea. For a safeline over a ravine.
Twice. He'd lost the same brother twice. And this time, he didn't even have the excuse of inexperience and unstable situations. He... he patrolled the city whilst his brother was dead, completely oblivious to the fact. How could he? How dare he not know?!
“Shh, Tim, I'm here. I'm here.” But not for Jason, whispered a vicious part of him.
“What's all this?”
Dick's heart just about stopped.
Damian stood at the entrance to the lockers' room, uniform folded under one arm, hair slightly damp from a shower and Bat-themed pajamas worn without shame. His mild annoyance was proof he had no idea of the drama that had happened not twenty feet from him.
With reluctance, he let go of Tim, a gentle hand lingering on his shoulder, before he took a few steps toward his youngest, most vulnerable brother.
“D-Dami, I... ”   Damn it, he had to be the one to tell Damian about this. Because otherwise, the person to break the news would be Bruce, and-
Shit.
Bruce.
Oh God. How could they possibly tell him- ? After all their fights, the goddamned shattering that had broken the man he had been, and their last conversations even being more admonishment about protocols that Jason had flippantly disregarded. Bruce would never recover. That was it. The end of Batman.
...But first, God he hated himself, wanted to just curl up in a corner and forget everything, first he had a young brother he needed to talk to. One... one little brother less than just this afternoon.
“Jason... ” He swallowed, his throat tight, his heart in denial, the words so damning, but needing to be said. “Jason did not make it. He... he's dead.”
Damian stayed thoughtfully silent.
Not... not the tearful reaction he had expected, but Damian had grown up surrounded by so much death and horror that he would obviously be guarded. And oh, Dick's heart went to his baby brother, and he truly wished he could
“I do not understand. Why such theatrics for the zombie?”
Dick gasped, knowledge warring with the flash of anger.
“Damian! He's our brother!”
“Did he lose his head?” Damian demanded, and Dick's mind buckled.
“Huh, no, but that doesn't have anything to d-”
“Then, why are you acting so weirdly emotional, Richard?”
Before Dick's temper could catch up to his mouth, the longest and most painful-sounding gasp erupted from the medbay, where, to the general shock of all, Jason's gray-ish body shot upward with both his arms raised.
Electroshocks didn't make you jolt like that.
Electroshocks, in fact, remained in their kit on the other side of the medbay, unused. Because Jason had seemingly been dead long before he had been brought to the cave.
That was roughly the moment when Dick's brain caught up with the first of many hints. Latched onto it with a fool's hope.
“... Damian... When you were calling Jason a 'zombie', what did you mean?”
Damian's brows scrunched up together, a look he meant to be intimidating, but had more in common with a disgruntled kitten. “Exactly that, Richard. Do we not have files on zombies in the computer? Dead bodies walking about animated by unholy powers?”
Jason's not- Dick forced the half formed thought to a halt. For once, he rather wanted to be very, very wrong in how he perceived his family.
“What's with all the noise? Can't someone try to sleep like the dead without screaming?” Jason groused. “Should have gotten myself buried ag-OOF!”
“JASON!” screamed the hysterical teenager that had launched himself at a very lively dead body.
“Huhh? Hi, Timmy?” Jason said blearily, ruffling Tim's hair, eyebags suspiciously prominent. “... Fear gas?”
The blinking slowed, the fog of sleep drifting away as he silently begged the rest of them for an answer.
Happily provided by a still crying Tim. “I thought you were gone!”
“What is dead may never die,” Jason quipped, his mouth twisting in that cocksure grin from his Robin days.
And Dick wanted nothing more than to stop right there, pass out from the relief and joy of his little brother being alive and kicking, but...
But...
That joke. One of many morbidly unfunny jokes and puns.
Bone-deep fatigue crushed his back. A bitter curse for whatever higher forces messing with them echoed strongly inside his skull, before he gave in to the inevitable and inhaled a few times for patience.
“Jason. We thought you were dead-dead.”
With prickly, hedgehog style affection, Jason pushed Tim back and stood up, stretching. “Come off it, Goldie. I wasn't even decapitated. I mean, if you were really worried, you could have just called a necromancer or something.” His expression hardened. “But if you ever call a necromancer on my ass, I'll shoot your perfect glutes.”
Yup, yup, yup, this is happening.
Tim finally wiped the rest of the tears away, helped by one of Stephanie's handkerchiefs, when he froze. “Wait. Your skin's still pale as a corpse.”
The flicker of amusement in Jason's eyes killed it for Dick.
God, how could they have all been this idiotic? If Wally ever learned about this – Shit, did Roy and Kory know before him?!
They were going to laugh their asses off at him.
Jason, unaware of the world recalibration happening in his poor big brother's mind, shrugged and rolled his shoulders – who creaked suspiciously loudly, more like rusty hinges than normal body parts. “Eh, I'm just a bit hungry. Nothing a meal or two won't fix and get some blood flowing back under my s-”
“You're a zombie.”
They turned toward him.
“Way to cross the finish line on time, Mister Rabbit,” Jason drawled.
Barbara, for once, looked completely unprepared. “A zombie,” she repeated, dazed.
Stephanie's nervous giggle died out when she noticed the lack of humor. “... No!”
Cassandra furiously looked down, muttering in her fist. Duke, by contrast, had the expression of a person stuck in a very awkward nightmare.
Even Jason's good-natured ribbing faded in when faced only with the distant screeched of bats. “... Hm, guys, bats, roostery, parasites and octopi? This is old news. What's with all the... ”
He vaguely gestured at their faces.
“Old news?” Tim rasped like he was being strangled.
“I came back from the dead years ago! Come on! Am I in a parallel universe? Hey, Demon Brat,” Jason called, baffled, “you knew, right? I didn't imagine that, right?!”
“Of course, Todd. Mother informed me of everything. Besides, Grandfather's interest in your state of being was of interest for a few weeks. How could I have been ignorant about your zombified state of being?”
In the corner of his eyes, Dick noticed Tim's, Barbara's and Cassandra's expressions all pinching in displeasure. In a way, Dick was reassured. He hadn't been the target of a family-wide hoax to discredit him as an attentive and loving eldest brother. No, he was just naturally blind, apparently.
“He knew?” Tim growled, like it was a personal failing of the fabric of time and space.
Damian's tone was the exact opposite. “And none of you realized...?”
Dick squirmed. “I... huh... you see...”
His baby brother eyed him, completely unimpressed, and for once after years of partnership, Dick felt he deserved every single ounce of it.
“I see... I shall reevaluate the value of this 'detective training' I've been given if this is the result then,” he said, the nearest thing to completely disavowing his older siblings without saying so.
In other circumstances, perhaps the others would have demanded that Damian stay and explain, but he suspected the quelling look it would have deserved prevented them. Not one of them spoke until Damian had disappeared upstairs and the elevator doors had closed.
“Jason, since when have you been a zombie?”
Jason blinked, jaw hanging. Juuuust enough for some of the scar tissue on his face to stretch past normal. Why did Dick only notice that now?
“Wait, you're all serious? How could you not know? I told you guys!”
And there was Dick's pride rearing its ugly head, because no, no he had not been told and maybe his deductive skills needed a very complete overhaul, but his memory was still excellent!
“You never said that. Heck, we weren't even talking until two years ago!”
“I literally told you all that I crawled out of my grave by myself, groaning the entire time. No experiment, no Lazarus Pit, just a body waking up in its own coffin and deciding to breathe fresh air. Does that not scream 'zombie' to you?”
They cringed.
“Not the only one that returned from beyond,” Babs mumbled. He could see her pull up the mental list right there.
“I greeted you all last meeting with a 'What's up, my bat folks? It's me, your favorite zombie!'. What did you think that meant?”
“That you're an asshole with a morbid sense of humor?” Stephanie quipped, and Jason momentarily paused his indignation to high five her. Fair's fair.
“Okay, but what about that time I got shot in the chest and I told you all not to worry about it?”
“I just figured you were going to get stitched up by Leslie or yourself, you know, regular bat neuroses,” Tim confessed.
Dick made a mental note to keep a much closer eye on Tim's patrols for the next few months.
“From a bullet chest wound?” Jason asked with an incredulousness that was not at all earned, because he was a freaking zombie!
“I thought your armor had blocked it! The hole wasn't bleeding!” Tim protested, cheeks red and tone defensive.
“Well, yeah,” Jason replied. “I don't bleed. It's like some fruit pulp or something. Ain't coming out if you don't press. My heart's not pumping.”
That's a 'nevermind' on the smoothie I saved for after patrol.
“Well, I know that now,” Tim said.
“I feel like I should write it down on the plaque or something,” Jason still sounded amazed, and might have pinched his arm just to be sure he hadn't been daydreaming, “Like, 'a good soldier AND A VERY DISCRETE ZOMBIE!' in big flaming letters. With a spotlight. And a dictionary opened on 'Zombie' or 'Undead'. You know, just in case the next batbrat to come along needs a few subtle hints about my true nature. What'd you think, Dick?”
He could not have been blushing harder than he currently was. “I think shut up.”
“Of course. What about when I shoved my deadly cold toes at Tim under a blanket?”
“Cold feet.”
“Never eating around you guys?”
“Daddy issues with Bruce,” Barbara deadpanned, and got a sock thrown at her for her honesty.
However, Duke, poor kid, turned green. “Wait, so when you offered me some jellied brain... was that not a death joke?”
Dick's stomach spontaneously shrivelled.
By the grimaces and sharp inhales all around, that was a common reaction.
Then the worst possible thing happened: Jason grinned.
He strutted, all confidence and brashness, and viper-quick, snatched an arm around Duke's shoulder. “Narrows, Nightlight, my tiny bitsy bro, everything I do is a death joke. My very existence laughs at death.”
Inside the batcave, the groaning was long-suffering and shameful.
“But that was actually brains,” Duke countered.
“Yeah. Calf brains. It's a delicacy.”
Tim massaged his forehead. What a mood.
Duke narrowed his eyes. “It was purely for the joke, wasn't it?”
Jason patted him on the back so hard Duke faltered. “One tragically wasted on your obtuse mind. I prefer me some Tête fromagée instead. Less like grainy jello.”
Stone-faced, Barbara wheeled herself toward the batcomputer. There, upon a series of quick clicks, she opened up the Bats's files. “Alright, you had your fun. Do you need to eat brains or are you just the world's least funny meathead?”
“I'm the world's most misunderstood vigilante!” Jason loudly protested, milking their pain for all it was worth. And then some. “But yeah, I do. No grey matter in there” -- he tapped his belly -- “no thinking up here.” -- his skull.
“Need some better quality brains then,” Tim stage-whispered to Stephanie.
Cass pointed the finger at Jason. “No killing for brains.”
Jason's good humor flickered with a flash of green. “Ain't ever done it, never will. It's a matter of morals, not hunger, Cass.”
Dick swooped in that minefield before it exploded.
“Great! Proud of you, Jay! You're the good kind of vegetarian zombie,” he said, putting an arm around his ginormous little brother's shoulders.
Wait a minute...
“Hey, you're older than when you died! Zombies don't age.”
“No, I was thrown into a Lazarus Pit, and the evil waters cured the malnutrition-induced delay on my growth. Haven't aged a day since.”
“I just thought you had a weird babyface thing going on,” Tim said.
Jason's grin turned sardonic. “Quite the opposite, Timber.”
Dick put his head in his hands in some vain attempt to prevent his brain from leaking through his ears.  With his luck, his little brother would 'playfully' eat some of it. “There's no way you look this rugged at biologically sixteen! I refuse to believe that.”
“Can you imagine my power if I'd been allowed to reach my full potential?” Jason leered, eyebrows waggling like waves in a sea at storm. “So many heart attacks.”
Barbara and Cassandra exchanged a silent look, and, after a solemn nod, Cassandra reached up to slap Jason upside the head.
“Thank you, Cassandra,” Barbara told her. “Jason, never do such a thing again.”
The disgruntled groan that followed must have been on purpose, because Jay was indeed an asshole.
“Besides, it's not like the world will ever know,” Tim said, cutting, a smirk hiding by his hand.
Dick really thought his little brother was far too relaxed upon learning that Jason was one with the undead. Sure, they had all encountered various levels of zombies during their missions, from all sorts of oral traditions and cultures, alien viruses and hidden nanobots piloting meat puppets. It wasn't even classified as a nation-wide crisis to encounter free-roaming zombies. But since the chronically unalive individual in question was one of their own, Dick felt he was owed at least a whole evening of frazzled panic and incomprehension for once.
“Oh?” Stephanie instead asked, sensing blood.
Tim shrugged. “Well, you know, no pulse, no blood flow,” he said with an angled eyebrow nodding at Jason's crotch
Stunned silence followed, their expressions varying from disgust, horror, unholy glee and, from Jason himself, wide-eyed shock that his shrimp of a little brother had had the balls to assimilate the zombieness fast enough to mock him for him.
Dick prayed for patience. For fortitude. And for an alternate timeline where he was an only child.
Why, for all the love of cotton candy and professional uncriminal clowns, did Tim put THAT image of Jason inside their brains? What had he done, him, a loving model for all of society, to suffer like this?
Maybe if he asked nicely, Jason would eat the image out of his head. He owed Dick that much after this clusterfuck of a conversation.
“Ooooooooh,” Stephanie crooned, miming getting dunked on. With acrobatics.
Jason huffed. “Like I was ever interested in the first place. I ain't Dick.”
“Okay, no slut shaming or virgin shaming, in fact, no shaming at all, please. In this house, we accept all sexualities, but we don't give out raunchy details about any of it, I only have so much brain bleach.”
“Share?” Duke pleaded in a whisper.
Oh, I wish I could, you young innocent soul.
A few beeps turned their attention back to Barbara and the batcomputer. “Well, that's one long overdue update to Jason's files. Anyone else want to share their 'obvious' medical condition?”
“Excuse you, being dead is not a medical condition.”
“I will make you wish for the peace of the grave, Jason.”
Droplets dripped from nearby stalactites.
A few bats flew overhead.
Jason turned to them like nothing had been said.
“Right. That was fun. Best night of my month. Can't wait to tell the Outlaws.”
Dick resigned himself to a series of unflattering texts by the absolute dickheads that were his second family. He could already tell the messages would blow up his phone to the Moon. 'You didn't know your brother that came back from the dead is a zombie?!'
“Have mercy and wait tomorrow morning?”
That smile could have been great or terrible. “You're lucky I'm in a spectacularly good mood, Dick.”
He had lifted his leg over his bike's seat when Duke was struck by genuine worry.
“Wait. Does Bruce know?”
Jason barked out a laugh.
“Of course he does! God knows he's got some massive blind spots, but he's obsessive, paranoid and I find subcutaneous trackers on me every week. No way he didn't get the hint before now.”
But, as his gaze went over the rest of them, his good cheer dimmed, his grin slipping off his face as surely as a bit of decayed flesh.
“... Right?”

cass/rose - I’ve said it so many times but fave cass ship of all time they make me !/!/? the parallels between them (the parallels that cass point out during their initial meeting!!!!) are so !/!:!/!: and I’m so upset bc they really could be something special even if just platonic but they never interact despite the perfect opportunities (what w rose’s history of working w dick and damian). also it’s just funny bc steph/cass and cass/rose being two cass ships when both steph and rose are also shipped w her brothers. that’s hilarious it’s like all of dick’s siblings having crushes on his friends but worse bc instead it’s your gf leaving you for your sister

Can I ask why you hate Batman and Robin Eternal? (it was my first DC comic ever, my dad bought it for me in one of his trips even though I didn’t know anything about the batfam or comics in general lmao). It’s been so long since the last time I read it I don’t even remember what it was about (I do remember enjoying it in that moment but it may have also been because it was a gift and the drawings were cool lol)
Aww, that’s very sweet. There are certainly bits of the comic that are enjoyable. I’m pretty sure that I’m actually in the minority when I say that I don’t care for it...but since you asked lol, there are several things about these comics that really rub me the wrong way. This is pretty negative (and way longer than I’d planned), so be warned.
For starters, Dick Grayson was just...not treated well by his family members in these comics. It felt particularly brutal here specifically...I think because Dick would say very harmless things, and his family’s responses in return were so abrupt and unreasonably harsh. Like, Dick says that he’s glad to see Batgirl, and wonders what some kids are doing dressed as Robin...
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #4
And Batgirl bites his head off. Or, there were times where Dick would just be hanging out in the general vicinity, and people would just take shots at him out of the blue for seemingly no reason.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #3
It felt like he could barely breathe without someone criticizing him for it. At one point, Dick confesses that he’s feeling discouraged, and Damian’s response is to punch him in the face.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #22
Which is a pretty good summary of the family’s treatment of him in these comics to be honest. Just literally, lashing out at him for zero reason while he just takes it.
One scene in particular that really frustrated me was this one:
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #5
You know, that other time in this comic series where one of Dick’s family members punches him in the face while he, once again, takes the hit and does nothing to retaliate. Good times.
For context...the big bad in these comics is a villain known as “Mother.” Her speciality is brainwashing. She placed several of her “children” in high-profile positions in order to enact her plans, even managing to infiltrate Spyral. In a message left for Dick, Batman specifically explains that “Anyone could be under her control, Dick. They could be people you know. People you love…they probably will be” (Batman and Robin Eternal #1).
Unlike in Pre-52, Tim’s background is largely a mystery. He’s acting suspiciously. So, Dick takes it upon himself to investigate and ensure that Tim’s not one of Mother’s plants.
Tumblr media
On Tim’s side of things, he’s upset that Dick investigated behind his back and found out where he’d secretly had his parents living for their safety. Dick unintentionally brought danger to their doorstep (though, notably, no one was actually hurt). But Tim’s pissed, and punches Dick in the face.
Not gonna lie, this was hard to take. I mean, even if Tim was in the right in this argument (which he lowkey isn’t in my eyes), that still does not make it ok for him to just punch Dick out of the blue when Dick is, as pictured above, just talking to him.
And the hypocrisy that Tim is displaying here is stunning. How he had previously told Dick off for keeping secrets from the family by going undercover with Spyral, when he in fact had a whole secret family tucked away in a corner. How he tells Dick off now for invading people’s privacy, when just earlier in this very comic he had planted surveillance devices in Stephanie’s apartment without her consent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #2
How Tim storms off and goes on a solo mission with Jason because Dick’s supposedly too personally invested and thus compromised, when he just got so emotionally unhinged that he lost his shit at Dick and punched him. Once again, may I just say, simply stunning.
But does Tim ever face any consequences for this behavior? Oh, of course not! Instead, we get Jason joking about how great it is to punch Dick in the face when he is not even fighting back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #7
And everyone collectively piling on to Dick and blaming him, even though he had legitimate concerns. Awesome.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #6
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #7
And Dick just continues to take it. Not once does he stand up for himself. It’s so hard to read him continually get shit on, I’m sorry. And it’s crazy how they treat him this way, and yet still ultimately look to him for encouragement and rely on him to save the day in the end? You hate to see it.
I also didn’t like what they did with Cass. I know, I’m just full of complaints. But they really watered her down. With Pre52 Cass, you could actually describe facets of her personality. She was compassionate, had a very refreshing, sassy sense of humor, etc. She wasn’t just...mysterious action girl who has a dark past and cries occasionally. I mean, there were moments where I could see glimpses of personality (the time she visited the ballet being the main one), but on the whole she punched people when needed, and otherwise just stood there as people talked about and around her. Essentially a prop for the story.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #24
Another thing that makes me so uncomfortable (that I couldn’t pin down until I read this post here) is the fact that this comics version of events makes it so that Cass’ own backstory no longer has her as the focus; it’s not about her emotional struggles and journey. By having Cass kill Harper’s mother rather than a random man, it makes the story about Harper, and about Cass gaining Harper’s forgiveness. So...more using Cass as a prop...as an element of someone else’s story in what is supposed to be her origin!
Honestly, I have no idea why Cass would want to stay with the Bat-family in these comics anyway...her previous mentorship with Barbara Gordon is nonexistent. She’s no longer Batgirl. The two people who were once her closest friends treat her horribly.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #3
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #4
As if she’s barely a person. Once again, sooooo hard to read this. Why.
Yeah, I could go on forever nitpicking here. You probably got a sense of it already, but I absolutely despise how Tim is characterized here. Most of the time, he’s an ass. Jason also had pretty inconsistent characterization. And I really don’t like how the whole comic treats Robin like something Batman owns and is meant to benefit from, rather than as something Dick created. I don’t like how Cain was “redeemed” in the end, and that Cass took on the name Orphan instead of Black Bat or Batgirl. Once again, how is she connected to the Bat-family exactly? And I don’t like how Dick’s time as Robin is portrayed.
The existence of this comic...drives me insane...
It’s also the worst time to be doing a “Does Batman treat his kids like child soldiers?” arc considering it is coming on the tail end of Spyral, aka that one thing that Dick did because Bruce beat the shit out of him and forced him to.
Tumblr media
Nightwing #30
Looking through Batman’s speech to Dick there...some of the things he says to Dick are so uncomfortably close to what Cain says to Cass. Really horrible parallel there. Why DC.
I really don’t know why Dick was so certain that Bruce didn’t do something shady with Mother, as was implied throughout the comic, when Bruce had pulled the Spyral crap fairly recently. Idk why they didn’t play into that side of things. Like, the fact that this arc ends with Dick comforting Batman about them not being child soldiers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #26
Instead of Batman stepping up to reaffirm to Dick that he was a good partner and a trusted ally when he spent the whole comic being insulted by his family and being told this stuff by his enemies (and flashback!Batman):
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal #12
Just sucks. I mean, Dick had just recently sacrificed everything (his family, his friends, his life, his identity, everything) to do as Batman wanted and go undercover, only to hear this over and over? To hear that none of it was enough? That he could never be enough? And Dick never gets reassurance that this isn’t true. This comic is just agonizing in so many ways.
Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I am not criticizing this to be a killjoy? Just venting. If you enjoy these comics, you are free to continue to do you. But I am never going to like them. And when I see people championing these books as the best the Bat-fam has to offer...oof is that hard to hear lmao! Surely we can do better than all this.

Another Lovely Family
Summary: The Batfam get interesting visitors from another reality.
Ao3  This is part of my batfam Flufftober 2020
Note: I have no idea what this is. It just kinda spiraled out of control. But I hope you guys still like it.
Sorry for Barbara fans, she's kinda not here. I couldn't really find a way to put her in here.
Also, the Chinese folk creatures mentioned were the fox spirit aka the nine-tailed fox. They are depicted as being both a good omen or bad omen depending on the literature. The second one was a Huan Cat. Its pelt was said to contain medicine for certain illnesses and some believed they scared away bad luck.
Their patrol had been peaceful that night, and the whole family ended it in the cave, laughing and joking as they stripped out of their suits and weapons. Bruce was watching over them with his ever stoic gaze but Tim could spot the small smile on his face.
So, that was exactly when everything went to shit.
There was a sudden rumble that shook the cave, making everyone reach for the nearest support. A blinding flash and then a portal-like circle appeared at the top of the cave. Through it fell...Tim didn't know how to really describe the really spikey creature.
And then another larger creature fell through.
They were both scaly and covered in patches of clothing. They seemed to have some humanoid feature but they seemed to be a little twisted. There were horns in their heads, wings at their backs and Tim could tell that the little one's irises were silted, like a reptile's eyes.
Tim pulled out his staff, beside him Jason clicked off the safety of his gun, everyone around the cave also took up their weapons.
The bigger one didn't seem to be moving but the smaller, about four feet tall, started to flap its wings and dart around, making a whining and screeching sound but stayed close to the bigger body.
Dick tried to get closer but the little thing lashed out and cut his cheek. Jason instantly straightened his gun but Cassandra moved in front of them.
"Stop!" she ordered
Everyone stopped, even the little creature, though it kept up its whining and chattering, slowly flapping its wings.
"Cass what is it?" asked Bruce
"Damian," she said
It surprised them, but Tim noticed that the little creature stilled at the name.
Cass turned toward the small thing, holding her and up and moving slowly. The little thing slowly backed away but seemed to be calm.
"Damian," said Cass again
The small thing tilted its head to the side, as if curious.
"Your name," said Cass, "Damian,"
After a moment, the creature nodded and chattered softly.
"You understand me?" asked Cassandra
It nodded again.
"Cassandra," said Damian, "What are you-"
"Look," she said softly, "Look close,"
Tim followed her instructions and closely looked at the face of the little thing. At a closer peek, their features were more clear, the green eyes, high cheekbones, and dark hair- It was eerily similar to their Damian's.
"You know," said Stephanie, "I can kinda see it,"
Cassandra nodded and turned back to the other Damian.
"We have Damian too," said Cassandra, "We call you D, Okay?"
The other Damian waited a few moments and then nodded.
"Good," said Cass, and she pointed at the bigger body, "Family?"
D nodded again, this time chattering in what Tim thought might be distress.
"We help," said Cass, "Okay. Turn them over to see,"
D nodded one again.
Dick and Steph stepped forward to help her flip the person gently. Unlike D, the features of this one were more clearer.
"Talia," whispered Bruce
Tim had to agree. Long hair, the same lips, same structure under swirls of silver that matched her son. The horns were bigger and straighter than D's and her hands had claw-like nails but the resemblance to their world's Talia was there.
"Mother?" Cass asked D
D nodded vigorously and chattered, pointing at Talia's side.
"Hurt?" asked Cass
D once again pointed at the same place.
"Can we check?" asked Cass
Once she got affirmative, Cass gently moved the cloth there. Their skin was bare at the back and stomach area but there seemed to be some scale-like things covering the sides. The scales were twisted in one area, almost pushed into the skin, and covered in silvery goo.
"Blood?" asked Cass
D nodded.
"We need to figure out a way to help and I don't think we can do it alone," said Bruce, watching as Cass talked some more with D, "I certainly don't want to try in case we make it worse,"
"So?" asked Jason, "We could reach out to some allies but who would know about something like this?"
'Well," said Bruce, "I don't like the man, but Constantine has travelled to other realities, we could get a few trusted biologists in here to take look. We could call Zatanna and Manhunter to see if they can establish a line of communication with the child,"
"The child?" asked Damian
"Yes, Damian," said Bruce, "From his behaviour and the comparison to the fully grown mother, it is obvious that he is a child. Though I'm not sure about the 'he' part. They don't seem to be human,"
"Anyway," continued Bruce, "Make those calls. I'm going to go explain this to Alfred,"
xxx
"So what is this?" asked Dick
Constantine glance from the Talia on the table to little D sitting with Cassandra at the end of the bed.
"I've never seen anything like this before, mate," said Constantine, "But there are worlds out there where some of us normals humans are metas. I mean there was one where you were born under the sea. There are some realities where humans evolved differently. I dunno mate, I've never seen anything like it and since the little one isn't talking, can't know for sure,"
"And from the looks of it, the scales have gone into her skin, a stark contrast to the other scales that are standing and parallel to her body. I'm sure they need to be pulled out but I don't know how to do that since I can't know how her anatomy works or even which organ is which. Not to mention I don't know how to verify if she's coding or not. Right now, the only indication that she's alive is that her stomach seems to be moving up and down and there is air coming out of her nose indicating breathing,"
"We could put her in a magical coma," said Zatanna, "It would slow everything down, including any wound she has. It's is our best bet,"
D was listening to them and let out a soft chatter.
Cassandra turned to him, "Okay,"
He looked at Zatanna for a long moment and then nodded.
"Okay," said Zatanna, "Here goes,"
xxx
Once the spell was done, D came to sit by his mother and curled up on her good side. He stayed like that for the next several hours, ignoring any of Cass's attempts to interact with him.
Watching him made something in Jason's heart, reminded him of the many times he had curled up against his own mom, until the day he had woken up to the feel of her cold dead body.
Ignoring that train of thought, he focused on another issue from his alley days.
"He's been here almost twelve hours, right?" he asked Bruce, "He should have been given something to eat by now,"
"When we checked Talia, we noticed that her teeth resembled a carnivore's," said Bruce, "I asked Alfred to get some meat options, cooked and raw. But he's also making a vegetarian meal, just in case,"
"Good," said Jason, still watching the little one, "He's so small,"
"I know," said Bruce, "And we have no idea how to get them home,"
"Have you been able to get the Martians here yet?" asked Jason
"No. They're still not available and Zatanna couldn't do anything,"
"And that also only works if Damian knows how to get back. The only reason our Damian is this resourceful is that he was trained by the league. Who knows how this little guy was trained to what tech they have on their side,"
"I know it's a lot of variables," said Bruce, "But we have to take it one step at a time. First food,"
"Right," said Jason, going back to gazing at D.
Bruce stopped looking at the reports he was going through and turned toward Jason.
"Jay, are you alright?"
Jason startled.
"Yeah. Yeah. Just...you know. Reminded me of...yeah,"
Bruce glanced at D and nodded in understanding.
"Why don't you bring him the food down in a little bit?"
"Me?" asked Jason, pointing at himself, "Is that a good idea?"
"Why not?" said Bruce, standing up and gathering his papers, "You're good with kids and you're good with food,"
"But..."
"Come on, Jay," said Bruce, "It'll give Cass a break and you can explain to the little one about the different options,"
"If you're sure," said Jason
"Of course I am, Jay," said Bruce, "I'm gonna go check on our Damian,"
"Okay,"
xxx
Half an hour later, Jason came downstairs holding a tray. Cass looked at him and smiled, vacating her seat beside Talia's bed. She kissed his cheek before making her way up the stairs.
Jason sat down and put the tray on a nearby table.
"Hey, D," said Jason softly.
Damian stayed turned away from him but Jason saw his wing twitch.
"So, it's a little afternoon now, which mean that you should probably eat something,"
Another twitch.
"Now, I don't know how much you need to eat or what you even like but we guessed a bit and I have some things here that you can choose from,"
Damian didn't have any response this time.
"You know your mother doesn't need food right now, because of the magical coma. But she needs you. They say people in comas, especially magical comas, can still feel and hear the people around them. How are you supposed to be here for her if you don't eat, huh? Maybe just a little?"
There were a few moments of silence, but then Damian turned around. His eyes seemed tired and hurt and made Jason's heartache.
"We have a few options. Vege's, cooked beef, pork and chicken. Same thing but raw too. Which one would you like,"
D pointed to the cooked meats, specifically at the beef. Jason handed him the plate and he started eating it as finger food, leaving the utensils behind on the tray. It reminded Jason of how some League members would eat.
There were a few minutes of silence and suddenly Jason had no idea why Bruce had sent him down, Dick was much better at these things.
Then he spotted a book sitting on his desk.
A little Princess.
"Hey," said Jason, "You know my dad would read to me whenever I was sick or injured and sometimes just because. Do you mind if I read something to you and your mother,"
D looked up and tilted his head sideways, a gesture they had come realize meant he was curious.
"Just a second," he said, getting up to get the book.
Jason came back and sat down, opening the book to its first page.
"Alright, Kiddo," said Jason, "Let's tell you the story of Sara Crewe,"
xxx
When Dick made his way down to the cave, it was with a tray of tea for Jason, a tradition that Alfred had brought to the family. D was still curled up against his mother and Jason seemed to be reading him Little Women. A copy of A Little Princess was sitting close by.
"Hey," whispered Dick as he came down, sitting the tray on a table, "How's it going,"
Damian chattered softly and Jason smiled, "D and I have been discussing characters,"
Dick smiled, "That's great guys. I brought you tea, Jay,"
"Thanks," said Jason, "I'll drink and read,"
Dick nodded and turned toward D.
"Hey, so I love listening to Jason too. Do you mind if I sit with you?"
D looked at him for a moment but the scooted a little, making his intention obvious. Carefully Dick sat himself down on the bed. the beds were big enough but Dick was still careful as to not touch Talia.
D seemed to have no such reservations and leaned against Dick's side. Jason raised his eyebrows at the action but kept reading. Eventually, soft snores started to emit from the little one and Dick looked over to see his eyes closed.
"I think he's asleep," whispered Dick
Jason nodded and closed the book, putting it away.
"Poor guy," murmured Dick, "In a world so different from his own,"
"Yeah," said Jason, "Seems to like you though,"
Dick smiled, "He didn't seem to hate you either, Jay,"
"Yeah," murmured Jason, "Do you think he has his own versions of us too. I mean the way he looks, his dad is probably their version of Bruce Wayne, right? Think the man adopted a slue of kids over there too,"
"I dunno," said Dick, "Maybe,"
Just the, D let out a small snort and twitched his wings.
"He's kinda adorable isn't he?" said Jason
"Yeah," said Dick, gently smoothing down D's hair, "I just hope we can get him home. And help his mom,"
"How's Dames taking it?" asked Jason
"He's alright but I know something's bugging him," said Dick, "But he seems more concerned about something regarding this little one than about any threat to him or to the family so that's some progress I guess,"
"Definitely progress," said Jason and then frowned, "What's the concern though?"
"No idea," said Dick, "Maybe he's just showing the inherent kid mentality, ya know, worrying about other small people,"
Jason snorted, "Yeah. Maybe,"
xxx
Half the bats ended up staying back from the patrol that day. Neither Jason nor Cass wanted to leave their guest and Tim stayed with them. D had been given dinner and seemed content to lay with his mom. Seeing this, Cass and Jason had taken to the sparring mats and Tim had started his work on the latest security update of the cave.
Tim was deep into it when he felt someone approach him. He turned to find D curiosity looking at the screen.
"Hey, Kiddo," said Tim, "Need something?"
D chattered and pointed at the screen, head tilted to the side.
"You want to know what I'm doing?" asked Tim
D chattered and nodded.
"Well," said Tim, "I'm trying to make our home safer for us. See these, here? This is the pattern for silent arms but Jason broke through them the other day just to prove a point to Bruce so now we're updating them. It usually ends up being my job but I don't mind. I like helping to keep my family safe,"
D started chattering excitedly, pointing at the screen, then at Tim and then at his wings. It took his doing it a few times for Tim to understand what he was trying to say.
"Are you saying that you have a Timothy too? And that he makes your home safe?"
D nodded with a huge smile on his face, excitedly flapping his wings.
"So you do have your own versions of us. Dick and Jason were wondering if your dad had adopted more kids too,"
D got quiet at that and Tim had no problem recognizing the sad and faraway look in his eyes.
"You must really miss them," he said softly
D chattered softly and nodded with his eyes down.
"I wish we could find a way to get you back. But there is nothing to read from the energy that brought you here and we can't really know anything until you tell us where exactly you're from. And we need the Martians for that. They'll be here tomorrow,"
D started chattering really fast after that, his wings flapping to the point where he was lifting off the ground.
"Hey. Hey," said Tim, "What's wrong? I'm sorry if I upset-"
D's chattering just got louder.
"I'm sorry," whispered Tim, "I'm sorry but I can't understand you,"
D let out a huff and landed back down, stomping his way back to the little corner they had set up for him and Talia. They had tried to get him upstairs but he had refused to leave his mother's side so Alfred and Jason had set up a temporary residence in a corner, separated by curtains.
"What happened?" asked Jason, running up to him, Cass right behind him.
"I dunno," murmured Tim, "We talked about his siblings and then I was saying how we were waiting on the Martians and he just got worked up and started to say something. I couldn't understand him,"
They looked over to D, who was still visible due to the curtains not being closed. He was sitting on the floor, gently rocking back and forth, almost in a trance.
"I'm gonna-" started Jason
Cassandra stopped him with a hand on his arm.
"No," she said, "Leave him,"
Trusting her judgement, Jason nodded and turned back toward Tim.
"I'm sure it was nothing. He's probably just getting a little frustrated you know. His mom's asleep, he's in another reality and no one here can understand him,"
"Yeah, I guess," said Tim, "I just wish there was more we could do,"
"Me too," murmured Cass, "Me too,"

It was the second day of their guests being in the cave that the Martians landed outside of it.
J'onn and M'gann came early in the morning and were introduced to D. Stephanie thought she saw recognition in his eyes.
"Hello, little one," said J'onn, kneeling in front of D, "I would like permission to from a mind link with you. I will not try to look into your memories, but I would like to understand what you are thinking and then translate your thoughts to our hosts here. Do you understand?"
D nodded and smiled up at J'onn, gently patting him on the cheek.
"Alright then," said J'onn, "Let's get started,"
J'onn locked eyes with D and they started to glow. Both him and D went oddly still, an odd sight that Stephanie had gotten used to when it came to the Marians' mind link.
Only a few moments into the link, D started to squirm, moving his hands and twitching his wings.
J'onn visibly stopped and looked down at D, "Is there something wrong, little one?"
D balled his hands into fists and shook his head, obviously trying to get them to stop. It didn't seem to help and the switching of his wings only got worse.
Beside her, Duke leaned in, "Does that look like what I think it looks like?"
"Maybe," murmured Stephanie, analyzing D's movements and thinking back to what Tim and Cass had said about his mannerism, "I think so,"
"Should I-"
Stephanie nodded, "Doesn't hurt to try,"
Bruce was just about to step up when Duke stood up.
"I have an idea," said Duke, "I'll be right with you,"
Duke jogged over to the cabinets and pulled out a couple of things and brought them over. He and Stephanie then explained them to D.
"See this," said Stephanie, holding op a plush penguin, "His name is Mr. Flappy. We sometimes hold him when we want to do something stressful. Would you like to hold him?"
D touched the soft toy and then nodded. Stephanie gave him the toy and he squeezed it, cooing in delight when it squeaked.
Duke smiled, "This is a weighted blanket. You can wrap this around yourself while J'onn makes a link,"
"And D," said Stephanie, "You don't have to be still, okay?"
D looked down at his feet but nodded. Stephanie took it as a win.
"Good," said Duke, "We're just gonna go over there,"
Both him and Stephanie turned back to go to their original spot and as they did, Stephanie spotted a proud smile on Bruce's face.
'Good job' mouthed Bruce.
Stephnie grinned and beside her, Duke did a thumbs up.
This time when J'onn tried to establish the mind link, D seemed noticeably calmer, rocking back and forth while wrapped in the blanket and holding the toy close.
"So, child," said J'onn, "Show me what happened,"
D closed his eyes and J'onn started to narrate.
"You were being chased and your mother tried to get both of you away. but she was- she was hurt, is that it? Yes, she was hurt so she miscalculated. I see. Do you know how we could get you home without waking your mother up?"
"Ah," said J'onn and opened his eyes.
"What?" asked Bruce
"Well," said J'onn, "It seems that D here believes that his family will find him. That's what he trying to tell young Timothy yesterday,"
"There's a difference between his family being to able to track him and him believing that they'll come for him," said Bruce
D let out an unholy screech at that, obviously offended.
"I think you pissed him off, B,"
Bruce turned to D, "I'm sorry, Kiddo. But we need to know,"
"May I?" M'gann asked D.
He scrutinized her for a minute but then nodded his consent.
M'gann started a mind link and began to ask her own questions.
"How are they going to find you?"
A few moments and then-
"Ah, I see," said M'gann, "According to D here, there are five people in the family that can travel through realities, including his mother. The others are his father, his brothers Jason and Richard and his sister Cassandra. They will most likely split into four groups. His Father and Aunt Kate. Jason and his outlaws. Richard, Selina and Timothy. Cassandra, Stephanie and his last brother, Duke. Alfred will be taking care of his baby sister Helena,"
"How do they track you, D?" asked Tim
"Hmm," said M'gann, "According to him, they have a link and can signal each other but D's is weak since he's young and his mon has to be conscious to send one. His family will look into other realities around and then make their way here. Apparently, they already have a system in place for if something like this happens,"
And then she snorted, "Something about his father being a bit paranoid,"
There were a few chuckles around the room while Bruce glowered at all of them.
"Anyway," said M'gann, "All that can be done here is that you take care of him and keep him safe,"
"Who was chasing you?" asked Jason
D frowned and looked around the cave, his gaze landed on the wall of blades and he pointed to ap articular one.
"That's my league blade," said Damian, and Stephanie noticed him stiffen, almost involuntarily.
Something was up with the kid.
"Were you being chased by Ra's?" asked Bruce
Damian nodded.
"I'm assuming he can't travel thought realities," said Bruce, "And no one in his loyal circle can either,"
D pointed to M'gann and she once again began the mind link.
"Hmm," she said, "No, Ra's can't travel. Interesting. It seems that the species in their reality are a bit different than most. Only D's kind and magic users can travel through realities and even then a very small percentage of those groups. Ra's and his followers are not included in this category. And even if he could find someone to do his bidding, it would be near impossible for them to find him since there is no link,"
"So only his family can track him," said Tim, "That's why Talia got them out of there. She was hurt and took the risk,"
"Brave of her," murmured Selina
D also chattered sadly.
Dick smiled and kneeled in from of him, "I'm sure your family will come soon, Kiddo,"
"Who do you think will get here first?" asked Tim
D tilted his head and then pointed at Jason.
"Jason, huh," said Duke, "Makes sense if you ask me,"
D giggled and leaned into Dick, a bit of the day's tension draining out of him.
"I have to leave now," said J'onn, "But M'gann will stay in case you need another mind link. Is that alright, D?"
D smiled and nodded, waving a small, clawed hand at M'gann.
J'onn smiled, "Lovely then,"

After lunch, Damian was sitting in his room and reading when someone knocked on his door.
"Come inside," he called out
It was Richard at the door.
"Hey Dames," he said, "Whatcha doing?"
Damian scooted over to make room for the man on his bed.
"Just a book," said Damian
"Hmm," said Richard, "You know, I've noticed that you haven't sent any time with our guest,"
"I'm not required to," he said shortly
"No," said Richard, "Of course not. But I'm just wondering if you're alright?"
"I'm fine," said Damian
"Dames-"
"I'm fine, Richard. I am not missing my mother. I am not worried about threats. I am not feeling sad. Or anything else your mind is coming up with right now. I am fine,"
"Okay," said Dick, giving his head a gently kiss, "Let me know if that changes, okay?"
"Fine," said Damian
Dick gave him another smiled and then left. Damian sighed and slumped down, not knowing how to explain to anyone what his actual worry was about.
Maybe he should spend more time with the other Damian. He could certainly alleviate some of his concerns this way.
Making up his mind, he grabbed some of his art supplies and made his way down to the cave. There, he found M'gann and Cassandra sitting and conversing with each other while D played with the plush toy Stephanie and Duke had given him.
Once the girls saw him, they both left while begging Alfred's cookies.
Damian sat down with D who looked at him curiously.
"I like drawing and painting," said Damian, "Do you mind if I draw you. I've never met someone with your features before. I think it would be interesting,"
D titled his head and then pointed at some of his paper followed by his fluid acrylics.
"You want to paint?" asked Damian
D nodded and looked at him with pleading eyes. Damian couldn't help the smile that came over his face.
"Alright, you paint. I'll draw you,"
He opened the paints for D and then went to grab a brush but noticed that the other boy had started painting with his claws.
"Well," Damian murmured, "That's one way to do it,"
Damian took his time sketching D, making sure he got all the details right. By the time he was done, a few hours had passed and it was almost time for dinner.
When he was finished, D showed him his painting and Damian had to say, he was impressed. And that was no easy feat.
While Damian had been drawing him in detail, D had used that paints to sketch out a few rough paintings. It wouldn't have worked usually but the material of D's claws had probably made it easier.
The first one was of Damian, showing him with his head down and bowed over a book. Next were three faces, One of D's mother, the other one obviously his father and a third that looked like Jason. He also had another painting of six figures flying in the distance. Another one that looked like a dragon from folklore.
"These are beautiful," said Damian, "Do you all live together? Your mother and father and your siblings?"
D nodded and Damian sighed in relief. A part of him had been afraid that Talia was taking D away from his family and that his father and siblings would cause a fight, hurting D the way Damian himself sometimes hurt.
Except, it didn't seem to be the case.
"That's wonderful," said Damian, "Do you want to see mine?"
D nodded and took the sketch, instantly squealing happily. His wings started flapping and he did a swoop around the cave, chattering happily as he clutched the drawing.
"You really like it, huh?"
D smiled and nodded.
"Well, you can keep it," said Damian, "As long as you let me draw another one that I can keep too,"
D nodded enthusiastically, smiling down at the sketch.
"Would you like to see more of mine?" asked Damian
D let out another whoop.
Damian grinned, "I'll take that as a yes,"
xxx
Bruce climbed down the stairs with Dick to get both Damian and D for dinner. They were hoping to coax their guest out of the cave to eat.
Once they got there, Bruce was surprised to find that both boys were sitting down and excitedly chattering. It didn't matter that Damian couldn't understand D, they still seemed to be able to communicate effectively, flipping through Damian's sketches that were kept down in the cave.
"Oh, hello Father. Richard," said Damian, as they came into view
D smiled and saved shyly.
"Boys," said Bruce, "We were just here for dinner,"
Damian turned to D, "Would you like to come upstairs this time?"
D shook his head and cast a glance at his mother, his eyes going dull and sad again.
Bruce frowned until an idea came to him.
"Dick," he said, "Tell Alfred we have a change of plans,"
And that was how they all ended up having dinner in the cave, picnic style.
After dinner D showed them sketches of his family. Everybody smiled and complimented as M'gann translated for D.
"Yes, apparently Jason is the scariest one of them but very sweet. Richard can do other most tricks in the air and Tim likes to fly at night. Cassandra is the fastest though. And Stephanie has the most unique wings because they are purple. And Duke lets him draw on his wings with glitter. Helena can't do much yet, she's just a baby,"
"So," said Jason, "Would you say that your dad is scarier than Jason or less?"
"Ah yes, " said Dick, "Ask the important questions why don't you?"
Jason shoved him before turning back to D, "So?"
M'gann laughed as she listened to whatever D was saying.
"According to D, his father is the pretty one of the family. A real charmer,"
Bruce smiled, "Well, that's not so bad then,"
"Pretty boy, Bruce," teased Stephanie
"Do you have an Alfred too?" asked Tim
D nodded and then picked up the picture of the dragon-like creature and held it up for everyone to see.
"He has silver features and this his 'other' form,"
"His other form is a dragon?" asked Jason
M'gann got a surprised look on her face, "Everyone in his reality has another form, which shows through their features. His family is what we call dragon, they pronounce it draagn. There are only a few of those around. Most of the populations are made of magic users and animal-shifters. Some other forms are sea creatures,"
"Wait!" said Duke suddenly, "I have an idea,"
He pulled out his phone and started to look for something. When he found it he held it out for everyone to see. Bruce scanned it and see that it was list of mythological creatures.
"Are any of these the 'other forms'?"
D nodded, pointing at a Nyad, a phoenix, a griffin, a pegasus, a jinn and even a chimera and some Chinese folk animals like the nine-tailed fox and the one-eyed cat with three tails.
"Wow," said Tim, "Could it be that our realities brushed each other and a lot of out folk animals are really just people and creatures from other realities,"
"Maybe," said Dick, "Some might have even gotten stuck here, hence the myths and stories,"
Everyone got quiet for a moment, trying to comprehend what this, if true, meant for their realities' history.
Eventually, Bruce decided to break the silence.
"I think it's time for bed for some people, especially if we're taking a break from patrol," said Bruce, sending a meaningful look to his two youngest sons. They had promised to him sleep earlier this week.
He also noticed that D slumped down a bit and felt bad.
"You can come up too," Bruce told him
D shook his head and chattered softly, casting his gaze toward his mother.
"I can just sleep down here," said Damian
Bruce wondered if his kids would ever stop surprising him.
"Yeah!" said Dick, "Why don't we all just stay down here tonight?"
"Well," said Alfred, "These old bones are not made for this cave. However, you all can stay here if you prepare proper bedding,"
"I'll take care of it, Alfie," said Bruce
"Alright then," said Alfred, "I'll be heading up,"
Bruce waved to him and then turned toward his children.
"Alright, Jason and Tim bedding, Stephanie, M'gann and Cass pillows, Duke and Dick blankest ad everyone's plushes, Damian and D, you can set things up as they bring them downstairs,"
His kids nodded and scattered to get everything done.
Once everyone was sitting down, still quite awake, Bruce decided on a long proved tactic.
"Anyone want me to read anything?" asked Bruce
"I'm fine with whatever," said Jason
A few more murmured os assent followed. D raised on os his hands and chattered softly.
"D's wondering if you would finish the book Jason was reading to him yesterday,"
"Little Women," said Jason, "It's still on the table and put the bookmark in,"
Bruce smiled, "Little Women it is,"
xxx
Bruce was barely starting to stir awake when the cave rumbled in a familiar way and there was a flash of light.
He sat upright just in time for five figures to appear in the cave. D had also spotted them and was flapping his wings and flying among them. The figure at the head finally took his in their arms, gently hugging him close.
It seemed like D had been right after all. The figure could be no other than Jason Todd. And he was terrifying.
Twisted horns, double claws, slit eyes and big stature, all came to together to make a nightmarish figure. The way he was talking to his little brother negated the effect though.
Behind him stood what seemed to be his team. Kori and Bizzaro looked the same as they did in their universe while Artemis seemed to have a greyish tint to her skin and Roy had spirals of what seemed like fire all around his arms and legs.
"Huh," said Dick, "D was right,"
"Seems so," murmured Tim
Their guests finally seemed to be done with their greetings and the other Jason turned toward Talia's body and frowned. Tim instantly stepped up to explain.
"We had to-"
"A magical come," said Jason, voice a bit jarring and shocking
Tim instantly stopped and stared at him wide-eyed.
Jason turned back and frowned again.
"What?"
"Well- uh- I wasn't um-expecting to- well"
That was when Bruce decided to step in, "Sorry. What my son is trying to say is that we weren't expecting you to speak since D didn't. That's what we've been calling him,"
"And you're kinda terrifying," Tim rushed out
The other Jason let out a laugh, "Why, thank you. Also, we do talk, D is just nonverbal,"
Ah, that certainly explain ed some of the behaviour that they had just put to being anxious and different from them.
There was another rumble and bodies started to flash into the cave, the whole other family appearing altogether.
"Damian," called out one of them, separating themselves from the hoard.
It was the other Bruce Wayne
"Holy shit," muttered his Jason
Holy shit indeed.
Pretty did not begin to describe the other's appearance. He was wearing a tank top with pants that seemed to be painted, leaving little to the imagination. Slim with toned muscles, shimmery wings, sparkly blue slit irises and shimmery black swirls reaching for his cheekbones, the man was a thing to behold. His hair was waist length and had been braided loosely. His scales shone in the light of the cave and his claws seemed to be made of dense glittery obsidian and his horns were gold and black.
Once D was done with this father, he flew over to the rest of his family and the other Bruce turned toward them.
"Hi," he said softly
Bruce stepped up and held out his hand, "Lovely to meet you,"
Other Bruce gave him a bright smiled and shook his hand.
If Bruce was a lesser man, he would have been at the start of an inferiority complex at the moment.
Instead, he gestured at Talia.
"We have her in a magical coma," he told him
"I can see that," said other Bruce, "We'll take her back with us and take care of her once we get home,"
"So you're together?" asked Damian, "D, that's what we call other me, said you all lived together. Is that true?"
It struck Bruce then, the reason for Damian's odd behaviour. He thought D would be separated from his mother the way he had been separated from his. By the way some of his other children were shifting, they had realized it too.
The other Bruce merely smiled though, "Ah, yes. We are married. Just celebrated our fifteenth anniversary,"
"And who's Helena?" asked Tim, "We didn't recognize that name,"
"Oh she's mine and Selina's," he said, vaguely gesturing behind him, "Sel wanted a baby so I helped her out. We agreed that she would be raised as part of the family though she keeps her mother's name,"
"Ah," said Tim
A child half him and half Selina. While part of him was curious, another didn't want to know the outcome of that.
D came up to his father and said something softly.
"Anyway," said other Bruce, "Thank you for taking care of my family but we should be going now,"
"Of course," said Bruce
The other one went to get Talia and the rest of the family came up to thank them. Dick practically hugged all fo them, Tim was solemn and Cassandra kissed all their cheeks. Stephanie and Duke went around giving them fist bumps and high fives while Selina and Kate merely said a few words each.
"You have an Alfed too, right?" said Selina, "D wanted us to meet him too,"
And because Alfred was magic, he chose that moment to step out of the elevator.
The other family surrounded him, profusely thanking him or also taking care of their family members. Alfred, to his great credit, took it all in stride and responded accordingly.
Right before they were about to leave, D leaned up into Jason's ear and whispered something quietly.
Both Bruce and Jason turned back and knelt. Jason took out a block of what seemed like glass and blew into it until it was shipped into their bat symbol. Bruce made a gesture with his hands and there was a liquid sloshing in the glass replica.
They handed it to D and the little one ran over to hand it to them.
"He says it's a present," said M'gann, "The people in their reality bend metal. Some more than one. Some metals are bent by more than one kind but Mercury is bent by the draagn exclusively,"
"But isn't mercury poisonous to us?" said Tim
"Not that one," said Bruce, "You can take some out from the stopper at the bottom and test it but I believe you are fine to keep it, Think of it as a token of our thanks. Mercury is special to us or as we normally call it, Quicksilver,"
"Alright," said Bruce, "Thank you,"
The other family disappeared in a flash of light and all they were left with was an odd decor piece and a couple of sketches.
The glass bat symbol ended up sitting right in front of the huge penny.
xxx
In the evening right before patrol, Bruce found Damian standing in front of the bat and watching the liquid quicksilver slosh around as if it had a mind its own. Some kind of magic, surely.
"Father," murmured Damian
"Damian," answered Bruce
"They were a lovely family," said the young boy
"They were,"
A moment and then-
"We have a lovely family too," said Damian, "Even if I wish some things were different,"
"We do have a lovely family," said Bruce, kneeling down in front of his son, "But you are also allowed to wonder how things could have been different,"
"I miss her sometimes," said Damian, "I know she wasn't really fit to raise a child, not after everything grandfather put her through and certainly not without getting help first but she is my mother and I miss her sometimes,"
"I know," whispered Bruce, "Come here,"
Bruce tugged Damian close, enveloping him in his arms.
"I love you, baby,"
"I love you too, Father,"

Always with you.
Because Kon is always looking out for Tim.
----.----
He wakes up slowly, achingly aware of each heavy muscle keeping him anchored to the mattress as he lays on his side, each nerve ending pleading with him to just stay, just relax for a few hours, please stop putting them through so much stress.
Of course, they are ignored. He’s preparing himself from the inevitable onslaught of pain once he gets in a vertical position, when he feels the careful fingers combing through his hair.
He can’t even blink before a heavy hand drops to his waist, keeping him still, because yeah, vigilante reflexes.
-Shh, don’t get up dude. I’m just braiding your hair. Nothing to worry about.
The effect is immediate, body going lax, mind so stupidly fast at ease it probably wasn’t healthy.
-What’re y’ doin’ere? -he mumbles through heavy lips, barely even parting them for the words to escape.
The body behind his back inches closer, and he feels his hair being moved this and that way.
-Heard you had a rough night. Cassie showed me once how to braid her hair, said it was relaxing an’ stuff, so I thought it might help. You seriously need a haircut though.
-Shu’up.
-Go back to sleep, buddy. It’s still late. Or early, whatever.
-Need to… ‘vestigate a case… B’ce’ll be mad…
-No, you need to close your eyes and be nice to yourself. I doubt Batman is expecting a report at five in the morning when you got tossed around by Croc like a ragdoll three hours ago.
He wants to argue some more, but the hands move from the ends on his hair to his scalp in a light massage and he’s out like a light.
He wakes up six hours later, body and mind both thanking him for the extra rest, with groggy eyes and hair a tangled mess.
It’s the best sleep he’s had in months.
---.---
-Shit, shit, shit, fuck, shit. Fuck!
Tim smiles, a small line of blood dripping from his parted lips- What would Ma said if she was here and listened to that, huh? Swear jar much?
-She would be cursing right along with me and probably kicking me in the ass to do something -the meta snapped back, hands hovering over his torso where the knife was still deeply buried- Should you put pressure on it? I feel like you need to put pressure on it.
-If I do, I’ll just move the knife around. And that’s gonna hurt like a bitch.
-Fuck. Fuuuck... then, take the knife out first. That sounds like a plan.
-It also sounds like me bleeding out quicker.
-You aren’t being helpful at all! Just… Here, if I could carry you…
-Don’t fucking touch me, you’ll... make it worse with your clumsy hands.
That’s not the reason he can’t stand Kon touching him right now, but he’s in no condition to elaborate either.
-Look who’s cursing now!
-I’m allowed to. I was stabbed.
-I KNOW YOU WERE, NOW TELL ME WHAT TO DO!
-You can just chill and keep me company -Tim sighs, head resting back against the wall he was using for support, hidden in a dark corner on the warehouse- I already sent a distress beacon, B should be here anytime now. No important organs were nicked, so I’ll be good as long as I get stitched up before I bleed out.
-That’s not comforting to hear. You suck at calming people.
-The person in pain should be the one freaking out. It’s going to be fine, trust me.
-I trust you to lead us into battle. I trust you when you say you figured something out, no matter how impossibly weird your explanation is. I trust you when you say ‘go left’ even if all the signs say ‘go right’. But I absolutely don’t trust you when it comes to your own health. You little bitch of a liar.
-...your bedside manners suck. Now get the hell out of here, I hear the Batmobile getting closer.
-You better survive until you get fixed up, Boy Wonder. I’ll give you hell forever if you die.
----.----
He’s sitting on the cold, hard ground when he feels the meta approaching. He doesn’t touch him, but Tim can still feel the worry basically overflowing off his body.
-It’s fine, don’t be so concerned.
-’Fine’ has a lot of new meanings when it comes from you, varying from ‘I want to cry a bit, hug me please’ to ‘I might need someone to watch over me, just in case I do something scarily stupid on purpose’.
-Those are very specific translations, for one short word.
-What can I say, I know how to read my buddy.
-Uh huh. And what does it mean, right now?
-You might be leaning more towards the latter, to be honest.
Tim hums, eyes still on the epitaph, hands carefully arranging the flowers on top. His parent’s names staring back at him, the stone where they were engraved as cold as their eyes had always been when they looked at him.
-Good thing I have you then, clone boy.
The pressure on his shoulder is sudden, but light. Barely even touching at all.
Tim feels it all the same, and for one brief, overwhelming second, he wonders what the fuck is wrong with him.
Quickly pushing the thought from his mind, he stands up again, turning to face his friend and give him his best shot at a smile.
-Walk me home?
---.---
Tears are falling from his eyes, and he furiously scrubs them off with one arm, the other still shoving shirts and pants into the open suitcase.
He’s leaving the manor, but he sure as fuck isn’t leaving his things behind. God knows what the little devil might do. He already took such a perverse pleasure in stealing everything Tim held precious, so why the hell not fuck his belongings up too?
He probably can’t fit everything into the suitcase, but even a portion of it would be enough. Even if Damian burned the rest, or if Alfred threw it out, or if Dick gave it to charity… he would at least keep a little for himself, a bit of the boy he was while living under this roof.
He sees Kon standing on the side, from the corner of his eye, but he doesn’t stop his motions. He needs to be quick about this, while Batman and his new Robin are still on patrol. Before Dick comes back and tries to stop him or… or worse. Worse like locking him up.
-Slow down -the calm, deep voice interjets from the side, like he could hear his thoughts- They just left, you still got time.  You are going to hurt yourself like this.
-I might be a sad excuse from a vigilante -he snaps back, ignoring his friend’s advice, now trying to shove a shirt he stole from B-Bruce once. He’s taking this one even if he has to leave one of his own-, but even I won’t get injured by packing some shit.
-You aren’t that, Tim.
-Dick seems to differ, and I feel inclined to believe one of my former teachers and literal Batman over someone who loves me too much to hurt my frail, stupid feelings. No offense.
-None taken. I’m going to break Grayson’s face the first chance I have, though.
-If you can pull that off, I’ll buy you a milkshake.
-I’m holding you up to that, bud. Now, slow. down. You might not get hurt physically, but your mind is certainly doing you no favors.
-I need to leave, I need to move.
-You need to punch someone, preferably your brothers, and then call Cassie, or Cass, or someone who’s not a fucking backstabber and ask them to come and punch them too in your name.
-That’s what you said you were gonna do, though.
-Yeah, if I get the chance. But I can’t right now, you know. Also, I’m coming with you, so… that’s gonna take a while to get around to.
Tim keeps pushing stuff, but his shoulders are slightly less hunched, more relaxed. He sees Kon moving around a bit, looking at posters still hanging on the walls, framed pictures by the bedside table he couldn’t fit and weren’t important enough to make space for, everything that once made this space Tim’s, like he’s trying to commit it to memory. Like he might never see this again.
Considering what Tim was planning to do, that might as well be the case.
He doesn’t really care anymore.
-Did you tell him about me? -finally breaks the silence his friend, pacing apparently over, as he stands by Tim’s side, eyeing the Superboy shirt Tim was keeping close so it could be the thing at the top of the suitcase once he was done packing the rest. His voice is devoid of any judgement, and Tim’s heart clenches a bit. This night couldn't get more emotional if it tried.
He shakes his head. Timothy Jackson Drake was done with feelings.
Carefully avoiding his friend’s knowing stare, he scoffs- Of course not. I might be, as Dick kindly put it, delusional, but I’m not stupid. He would have just drugged me and dumped me into the deepest cell he could find at Arkham that wasn’t already occupied. I know I bitch about how incredibly easy it’s to break out of there, but that only applies to villains with henchmen on their payroll that can provide the manpower to devise a getaway.
Seeing as the case looked ready to burst, he added the last shirt and closed it, fighting against the zipper for a good minute and a half.
-Okay, I’m done. Let’s get out of here. I have a parental figure to find and drag back, kicking and screaming if I need to. You coming?
-Always. Who else would talk you out of stupid shit, Rob? I’m always on your side, you know that.
----.----
When Tim sees him again, flying parallel to his motorcycle in Paris of all fucking places, he wants nothing more than to punch him.
Kon tries to talk to him about what he’s doing, what happened to Bruce, why the fuck was he doing this to himself. Tim just wishes, more than ever, that he had more control of his mind, so he could just wave Conner’s hallucination away.
But, well, when does he ever get what he wants?
-Tim, please, just hear me out! I’m back, I…
-Yes, I can see it, you jackass -he bites back, making his way through the sewers-. You said you were coming with me, but then fucking disappeared until now. I got fucking Ra’s Al Ghul on my tail, you know? I could have used what little comfort you could provide.
-First of all, rude. Second, dude, I couldn't come. I was busy… coming back. Which brings me back to my earlier point. Tim. Buddy. Tim, I came back. This is me. Really me. Please, just… just touch me, okay? So you can be sure this is real. Rob, c’mon…
But Tim just shakes his head, and avoids both his hands and every mention of this topic, only answering back when Kon moves from that to talking about Clark and Lex, right and wrong.
Maybe his head is trying to remind him of Bruce’s teachings, about the dangers of falling into Ra’s web, like the silly fly that heard the spider’s honey-dripping words and fell from them.
Maybe everyone’s right and he just lost it. Whatever. He know he’s right about B. His mental health can take a back seat and enjoy the storm Tim is going to break loose, and he’ll get on it in a sec.
But he can’t just listen to Kon, can’t believe him, because it would destroy him if his hopes get once again destroyed.
He’s already stretched thin, running after a man he’s not 100% sure is even alive. He can’t spare any hope of the same belief to Kon.
When he leaves the city, Conner doesn’t follow. He looks sad as Tim walks away, but he doesn’t disappear on thin air like he used to. Instead, he flies away until Tim can no longer see him in the distance.
That gives him pause, for a second, because… that was new. Maybe… maybe Kon had actually… maybe he was...
But he steels his heart and keeps going, because he can’t chase two ghost at the same time.
And if Kon was truly back, the Tim welcoming him back couldn't be the one with two devils and no angel on his shoulders.
----.----
He’s back in his city, feeling more like himself than ever, even with the looming threat of Ra’s revenge hanging over his head.
He’s lighter, more at peace with himself, now full of evidence of Bruce’s situation that will grant him Justice League’s backup. Ready to throw it at Dick’s face, hopefully poking his eye with the flashdrive or harming his stupidly perfect face with a papercut.
He’s in a better place, finally. Tired, mourning the loss of two ninjas that gave their lives for his mission, and one organ less than what he had when he went away so many months ago, but… Mentally speaking, he hasn’t feel like this since before his mother died.
Enough that, when Kon landed in front of him, some quip about leather suits on his tongue, Tim felt strong enough to risk another heartbreak and jumped forward, arms circling around his best friend’s middle, hoping against hope he wouldn't just go through him like all the times in the past when he tried to hug Conner’s hallucination.
He hits a solid, steel-like chest, and his heart stops.
-Kon?
The meta’s arms wriggle out of his hold, and he proceeds to fold them around his tinier frame, plastering Tim to his front with a shaky breath.
Tim can’t breath. He wonders if he’s dead, too, but quickly discards the idea, because death couldn’t possibly be so warm.
-I told you, I’m back for good -his friend mumbles, arms clenching around Tim, voice breaking and heavy with emotion- Not that I ever truly left, but…
-W--what? -he’s choking up on his tears and confusion, wanting to get away from the hug so he could look at Kon’s eyes and discern the truth, but also knowing that the mere idea of letting go would make him cry even harder- Y-you died, what do you mean you never…
He can’t keep talking, because he feels like he would drive himself into a panic attack if he does, but thankfully, words aren’t really a necessity with his Superboy.
-I told you, Boy wonder, that I’ll always be by your side. And I was. Right up until I got back to life and then I had to track you down to tell you about it, not that your stubborn ass believed me…
Moments flash through Tim’s mind, quick and merciless. All the times he laid in bed, aching and mourning, and feeling gentle fingers sooth the pain away, both in his body and his heart. Sitting on top of buildings and contemplating how easy ending it all would be, just for Kon to appear out of nowhere, yelling at him ‘If you’re going through hell, keep going until you fucking leave it, idiot!’. Visiting his parents’ graves, getting verbally attacked by Damian, getting discarded by Dick, and then a comforting voice in his ear, encouraging him forward, begging for him to not give up yet.
-No. No, those… those were hallucinations. Proof that I’m crazy. Proof that...
-The only thing me being with you after death proved, was that you have no way of getting rid of me. And you aren’t crazy, Tim. Which is a testament to your resilience, because with all the shit you have to put up with, anyone would be. But you aren’t. I was a kickass ghost, your own personal supernatural buddy slash motivational coach, not a product of your tired mind. Now, the pink haired fairy sitting by your table that one time? That was because of sleep deprivation. You need to sleep more, my dude. And now, I’m alive, I’m back, and I’m here for you, like always.
Tim can’t even attempt to control the tears. Who knew a healing heart would ache so much? He’s crying louder now that he's unbelievably happy than when he was utterly destroyed. His heart feels like it’s growing up inside his body physically now, doubling in size and stronger than ever.
He feels like Ra’s could put his plan in motion right this second and he wouldn't give a shit. No revenge he could spring on Tim would dampen his happiness at the warmth of Kon hugging him back.
-Now, this reunion is very touching, and it was fucking time you got it into your thick head that I’m back for good, but -Tim scrunches his nose, head leaving Conner’s shoulder so he could look up at his face in confusion. The meta gave him a smile that was probably meant to be reassuring, but came out as vicious-  I have a to do list, and punching Dick Grayson has the honor of being number one. Care to point me in the right direction?

Since I have no self restraint, I’m writing another prompt/one shot.
Essentially, normal girl Lia (or some OC) whose a big fan of DC comics and the like ends up in a weird inter dimensional accident and ends up in the DC universe (it can be a mix of canon because fuck canon, up to you).
But, where did Lia end up exactly? Fucking Gotham.
The moment she realizes this is decides: Nope. Nah. Nada. No sir-y. This is NOT happening. Fuck this. I might end dying, or, worse, BECOME A FUCKING MAIN CHARACTER IN THE BAT CLAN. NAH. HELL NO.
Lia decides that, no, she will not involve herself in the Bat Clan/Wayne’s at all. Nope. Nah. Too much drama. Too much angst. Too much fucking skin tight suits and my poor Pan heart can’t TAKE all the HOT, RIPPED hero’s like what the fuck.
Now, this can play out in a variety of ways:
Lia is, say, around the same age as one of the Batboys. It can be any of them, up to you. Now, she some how ends up in Gotham Acdemy and begrudgingly befriends them. Cue angst (especially if its Jason. Considering in canon, if Jason survives he becomes Red Robin thats all I know lmao). If Lia is friends with the second Robin, it’d bring up the deliemma of: does she tell him that he’s gonna fucking die and then come back to life. Oh and, she’s actually from an alternate world were everyone thats like a superhero/vigilante is a fictional character. Honestly, if done well, can definitely stir the feelings of the poor saps who read the moral deliemma of Lia. Now, who is Lia? Someone who doesn’t want to get involved. If she avoids Jason in the beginning, does she have doubts and wants to warn Batman of Jason impending death or not? Like, that sort of shit panic attack inducing. There’s a lot of things you guys can do to torture not only Lia, but also the readers who might be like: “TELL HIM! TELL HIMMMMM!!!” or, “fuck, even I don’t know what I’d do” and etc. There’s a lot of leeway.
They are grown, and are in college (let’s say the events of Death in The Family happened and everything surrounding Red Robin striking out to find Bruce whose lost in time). This Lia is much older, recently graduated from college and currently interns for Wayne Enterprises. See, Lia is just another intern in a global colgomerate cooperation, there’s no way she’d ever run into any of the Wayne’s. None at all. But. But. She does. Some how she becomes the Executive Assistant to Tim (he once saw how she managed an entire fucking department’s schedule even though a group of people spontaneously quit. She was able to somehow salvage that shit in under three hours. And, Tim might or might not have fallen slightly in love with her—). Lia, now, a fresh 20-something year old, is now the Executive Assistant to another 20-something year old who happened to run one of the most rich and powerful companies in the entire world holy shit. Now, we follow the adventures of Lia, whose now one of the most powerful persons in the entire company (and proxy the world, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️). Lia, let’s say, is a fucking god at manipulating people, making connections, accounting and management, and also a Very Tired Recently Graduate of GU. She, cannot, and will not deal with the constant bullshit that the Bats pull regularly. So, Lia can either passive aggressively hint that, yeah Tim, you definitely got that broken arm from a golf accident. Oh hey, I also heard the Red Robin foughy Killer Croc and also sported a broken left arm like you! What a coincidence, right? And she’d say this with a straight face. Tim knows that she knows, and Lia knows that Tim knows and yeah. Alternatively, she could outright tell him: “look, Tim, I swear to god, if you put off another meeting without a day notice just because some gang member got the better of you.” “Wait, gang member—?” “—do NOT interrupt me. Look, I know Bruce Wayne is Batman. Not the whole, ‘Bruce Wayne and Batman are the same person! The butts match!’ type of thing. I know he is Batman, you Red Robin, Dick Grayson is Nightwing, Red Hood is the weirdly alive Jason Todd, etc etc. There’s no point in feigning the fact that I don’t know. Because, I do.” They stare at eachother for a bit, and Tim falls just a little more in love. “How... Actually it’s dumb to ask you how you know, but, how long?” “Good tactic to ask me how long I’ve know instead of how I know. But, to answer your question: I’ve know since I was around...” THE FRAME FREEZES now, should Lia say 8, since, technically, she’s know since she was 8 that Bruce Wayne is Batman, considering the whole parallel universe thing. Or, does she say 18, the age in which she arrived into this world? Now, that decision can prompt many things to happen. For one, if Lia says 8, Tim is gonna be so awestruck and also be dry curious. If 18, Tim is still amazed (that she knows at all). Either answer would also illicit this response: “...you’ve known for so long, yet never told anyone?” Lia shakes her head. “You guys have a secret identity for a reason. Plus, I’m not in the business of becoming a vigilante or whatever. I’ve tried my best to steer clear of all of that, in all honesty.” “Huh. Makes sense. Wait. Then... why did you start working at WE, if you knew our identities?” Lia stares at him like he’s grown three heads. “Dude. This is WE. One of the most powerful companies out there, why wouldn’t I work here? But, the ither fact of the matter is that I didn’t expect to become your fucking Executive Assistant. Like, I couldn’t just deny the offer, my mother would’ve disowned my ass the second she heard I turned down such a prestigious position.” Lia shuddered. “Fuck, I can hear her curse me out in like, five different languages.” Let’s also say, at one point or another, Lia’s mother arrives, and say, is the most terrifying person Tim has ever met (and Tim’s faced off against Ra’s al Ghul, a functionally immortal man with a fucking army of highly trained assassin at his disposal).
Lia is tame honest to god tame compared to her mother (if her mother is like, 5’3”, that’s even more hilarious tbh). Essentially, if Lia’s older and somehow become Executive Assistant to Tim (or Bruce, because, fuck canon) it would be so god damn funny (read “The Executive Assistant To Batman” in which Tim nene became Robin but still knows the identities of the various Gotham vigilantes. Oh, and, he’s the Executive Assistant to Batman. It’s so fucking hilarious and y’all gotta check it out. It’s on AO3).
Number 2, is a lot more light hearted compared to the moral deliemma of Number 1 (as, is Lia is the same age as Robin!Jason, and knows that he’s gonna die, but she also doesn’t want to get involved with the vigilantes presents a very large problem). Number 1 is great for angst and a character study for this OC. Number 2, is a more light hearted, fun scenario (as it avoids the can of worms called “Do I Warn the Bats of Robin!Jasons impending death or not because I honestly don’t want to get involved with the Bat.”.
I, personally, would love to read Number 2 (please make Lia, or whatever OC, a god damn Tired of Your Bullshit, amazing assistant to the CEO of WE, competent af and very, Very Tired of the Bats BS, and, PR is Going To Skin Me Alive and Roast Me Over A Flame). Maybe some drama, angst sprinkled in (there’s the blatant fact that, Lia is a completely different world. One that has superhero’s, aliens, magic and so, so much more. The fact that she’s in her doppelgänger’s body could cause some dissociation/body dysphoria and that sort of stuff. It’s a great opportunity for a character study for Lia/your OC).
Regardless of you choose 1 or 2, the basic premise is:
Some rando kid (or young adult, whichever strikes your fancy) who loves to read Batman/DC in general. Ends up in some weird ass accident that lands them in the DC universe, specifically Gotham. Everything about their pervious life and the life in his world is the same (or not, up to you), only difference is that there’s an alien powered by the Sun and that cannot he injured (unless it’s by a glowing green rock). They decide, pretty early on, that they want nothing to do with the vigilantes of Gotham (which also means they have to avoid the Wayne’s and Co, which should be ways right? Right?? Gotham is really big, I’ll probably only ever see them in passing, I’ll be fine—). But, the universe said, LOL, nope. And they end up befriending the Wayne’s somehow. The rest? Up to you. If they befriend Robin!Jason they have to cope with the moral deliemma of getting involved to save his life or not. Or, maybe this is the world where Dick is still Robin. Do we save Jason early on, or not? What about Tim? Cass? Stephanie? Or, what if, they end up in a world in which Jason died and came back, Bruce came back from being lost in the time stream and Damian is now Robin.
Essentially: OC ends up in the DC universe, specifically Gotham. Decided not to ever get in involved with the Vigilantes/Wayne’s. However, the universe said nope and they become friends with one of the Bats/Waynes regardless. Now, how the fuck do they cope?
BONUS: Lia manages to avoid the Wayne’s/Vigilantes of Gotham completely. How? She ends working for LexCorp. As Lex Luthors Executive Assistant (basically the same way as she became the Executive Assistant to Tim). Now, she has to cope with the fact that she works as the Executive Assistant for Lex fucking Luthor of all people. She can hear her mother shaking her head in Disappointment™️. She hates the universe. Also, Lex Luthor is pretty open about his Evil, Bastard Schemes with Lia for whatever reason (much to Lia’s utter fucking chargin). She discreetly sends info about these Evil, Bastard, Devious plans to the Bats. Cue her realizing that, to ensure Luthor doesn’t suspect her, she’s gotta get GOOD at hacking and computer science. And get good she does. Like, her utter fucking Done-ness over Luthors Supervillain ways and her wanted to never be found out by the Bats is like taken to Infinty in the 10 dial scale. Somehow, she manages to both avoid suspicion from Luthor (cue intense moments in which Luthor is talking to her, and he’s speaking in a weird direct way that makes Lia think he found out and she mentally plans for her subsequent “death” and fleeing of the country and when Luthor finishes his sentences it just him praising her or something else innocuous. Lia felt like the sun was lifted off her shoulders.) She’s always on edge. Her hair is slowly turning grey. Luthor notices and makes a comment and Lia simply laughs while making a underhand comment about how Luthors bald so he doesn’t need to deal with greying hairs. Lia stops laughing realizing oh shit I just insulted my boss in the most underhand way. What ghe fuck. But Luthor just laughs, much to Lia’s relief. Her hair is still greying from the stress. Anyways, she inadvertently becomes a techno vigilante that can rival the famed Oracle (let’s say, for the sake of this prompt, Lia’s code name is Reaper because she was drunk and apparently in the mind of her 13 year old self when she came up with it). Reaper’s name is slowly growing, as Lia does some other stuff with her new found skills in hacking. She mostly helps the Bats by giving them crucial info on Luthors dealings and the like.
One day, she realizes, that, oh shit. I became the one thing swore I’d never become. What type of Shakespearean shit is my life—
If someone does the situation in which Lia/their OC becomes Luthor Executive Assistant and then inadvertently becomes a Vigilante themselves because, sure, they don’t want to get involved, but, fuck Luthor and Eat the Rich. Also, I would love it if said fic included the most stress inducing scenes were it seems like Luthor found out about Lia and the whole Reaper situation but he actually DIDN’T and Lia is here like, sweating god damn bucks while her hair slowly falls out. Please. Write this shit. It would be
✨Immaculate✨
Anyways, hope you like this prompt/one shot because I damn well enjoyed writing it!

Cassandra Cain likes to draw
Cassandra starts drawing because it’s enjoyable and calming, and soon begins to use some of her drawings to communicate because it’s easier and more efficient than speaking. Usually her communicative drawings take the form of something like a colorful sketch of the fair slipped under Bruce’s door after he asked them all to consider suggestions for weekend plans, or a doodle slipped in Dick’s bag the night he revealed a cool new modification he’d done to the utility belt that shows her costume with a belt with the same detailing. Drawings used to get information across tend to be of objects or locations and everyone agrees the system works pretty well. Sometimes though, she includes people in her drawings
Bruce has several framed drawings of he and Cass on his desk, both as civilians and as Batman and Batgirl. If anyone not aware of his other identity asks about the latter he chalks it up to his daughter’s active imagination and fascination with superheroes. It’s a risk but he’s more than willing to take it to show off Cass’ art
Dick’s apartment refrigerator is covered in doodles and sketches and one watercolor painting of he and Cass practicing stunts and running around Gotham or the manor. He especially loves one where she’s carrying a helpless Nightwing bridal style out of an burning building
Damian has some of her drawings pinned up next to his own in his room. He insists this is only because a serious art collection has more than one artist, but when no one is around he smiles at them up on his wall
Tim likewise insists that he just needed something to put on his desk at work to make it look less cold and empty, but he also loves them
Steph’s room is always a mess but amongst the chaos Cass’ drawings have a home in drawers and closet tops and her notebook pockets at school
Duke is still a little unsure of himself at times, but seeing the little comics that Cass drew of them fighting crime and playing video games always centers him when he sees them taped up in his locker
During long nights staring at her computers Barbra likes to look at the picture of the two girls next to a tied up Joker, one of Babs’ wheels running over his foot.
In a familial parallel to his daughter, Commissioner Gordon often glances at the drawing of him and Batgirl fist bumping to muster up the energy to finish the night’s paperwork
Alfred has a number of drawings of the two of them eating his famous brownies or sitting quietly at tea, all of them impeccably organized and curated
Jason isn’t home all that often and as a rule doesn’t tend to keep identifying markers lying around, but he’s always got at least one of his little sister’s drawings in his jacket pocket, a little wrinkled and a little frayed and extremely loved
And in the Cave there is a large drawing that Cass put up herself, of all of them, together and happy
Everyone understands these drawings just as well as her other communicative sketches; they are how Cassandra says I love you

nightwing secret files liveblog:
this is gonna be a long one so it’s under a cut!
taking wing-
is that jason??
i like this 'a christmas carol' type exposition i'm ngl
i'm not sure if 'jason''s dismissal of the circus is dixon using an unreliable narrator, or if dixon actually believes that
god i hate this art so much
how dare u insult the teen titans in any way 😤 i like the name
also titans cameo!!
more awful jason characterisation (pls dixon just stay 8732894738 feet away from jason)
"without robin i have no family" i guess the titans are just chopped liver huh
"i always thought that one day i'd be batman" nope nope nope nope you have 0 understanding of dick's character if that's what you think mr dixon
i love clark having a part in dick becoming nightwing - i adore it - but the way dixon retcons the importance of the titans, and especially kory, in dick becoming nightwing rubs me the complete wrong way. i'm choosing to read this as a between the scenes moment, but i 100% dixon intended this to replace the titans' importance. and the way ppl just swallow it up w/o thinking about the reasons behind why dixon would want to erase the titans - and kory - pisses me off lmao
"i didn't mean to stay so long [with the titans]" *eternal screaming* he really wants to undermine the titans at every possible turn wow
at least the next page acknowledges the importance of kory in dick's life, but right afterwards we have "lmao she must've liked your costume. all the girls did. you're a chick magnet" (paraphrased) and i'm just back to sighing
also hi i'm mad at the framing of babs being the endgame bc of course they'd do that. and also at kory being shorter than dick. thanks! i hate it! i'm willing to bet that dixon asked for that specifically.
"this is where i came in" i'm confused at this part but tbh i don't care enough to think abt it any more
i'm also ughhhh at the way they're trying to give bludhaven importance. i don't care, i don't like it, he should've never moved there
ok i do really like that last page
the fact files things are good enough, i love the art for the haly's circus one! the pt barnum ref is 😬 though (ik ik it's the 90s but fjskdh why)
lost pages: teen titans-
ok so, i don't like devin grayson. i don't like her writing at all, i don't think she gets the characters at all, and hot take: if you dislike a character who's super important part of dick's life, and helped him come into his own and be who he is, you shouldn't be writing that character. (i'm talking about kory here, but tbh if you dislike any of the characters who dick interacts with frequently and are a huge part of his life - especially his love interests, and his family - you shouldn't be writing dick.) so i'm not going into this story with high hopes. however i've seen ppl talk about this story as being really good so i hope i'll like it too
you can tell she mostly cares about the fab five, which wouldn't be a problem if she treated the ntt characters better but alas ://
kory and vic both say 1 thing the entire page lmao
ALSO KORY NOT KNOWING WHAT DAY IT IS IS ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT I CANNOT BELIEVE
i loooove the parallel between dick grasping wally's hand and young!dick holding his dad's hand 🥺🥺🥺🥺
vic legit says one thing the entire story lmaoooooooo 🙃🙃🙃
i love garth and roy being brought to the tower 🥺
this is def some of grayson's better work, but it suffers from the same thing all of her stories do. she doesn't fully understand all the characters. if one character is off it affects the whole story. a lot of her stories have good ideas and poor execution, and this one definitely doesn't have awful execution but there's still something missing and as someone who loves the titans it's just sad. i get why people like this story - it made me tear up at the end ngl - but the rest of the titans are just as important as dick and it feels like the writer doesn't understand that. (i get this is a dick comic but it's still a titans story.) (it does however make me want to write a fic expanding upon this moment and the aftermath bc the idea of the titans all coming together to cheer dick up is so goooooood. are they gonna have a party celebrating dick's parent's lives? are they gonna eat junk food and watch a comfort movie? are they gonna just sit and talk?? the possibilities are endless!!)
the art is gorgeous as all of jimenez' art is, i love his style so freaking much!!
the next page is of the bludhaven supporting cast and all it does is remind me how much i do not care abt them. i think the only one i actually like is clancy, the others are expendable and forgettable. (i do love clancy a lot though, i wish she'd been written by more people than just dixon). though, i usually love guice's art, i think i actually prefer mcdaniel's take on clancy??? which is 100% a first for me.
i like seeing the set up to dick's apartment, bc i'm a sucker for layouts and maps. i wish this comic was way better written bc the concept of dick living in an apartment building and interacting with his neighbours is one i really like, esp in superhero comics. but again i have to say, alas.
a day in the life of nite-wing/hangin'-with tad:
painful... just painful...
i physically couldn't care less about this if you paid me
the next page is tad's file and i am Not Reading That. nope nope nope. and also fuck you.
next is a map of bludhaven, and like i said, i'm a sucker for maps.
the page after that is brutale's file and again i just do not care. the art is by damion scott who i really like, but the design looks like knock off scarecrow so
the next pages are files for double dare, lady vidc, shrike and blockbuster and i'm skipping them all bc i give negative fucks
next is a spread of what i assume is dick's cork-board? it looks kinda interesting but the writing is hard to make out and i don't care enough to try to decipher it
next is torque's files and same same, idc idc
nightwing's romances/orange you glad i didn't say banana?:
ok so y'all know i hate dickbabs. i hate everything about how it was built on the foundation of tearing down kory and dickkory and i'm a kory fan first and foremost so i hate this whole situation. so i'm already predisposed to disliking anything that talks about how babs is dick's true love, and talks down any of his other love interests. i come into this with an admitted bias. i'd try to be charitable but i don't see why i should when no one involved in the writing of dickbabs is charitable towards my faves so 🤷
i love love love stelfreeze's art! he's drawn babs in something else i read and i loved it then and i love it here!
i adore dick and babs' friendship, so the beginning is really sweet and cute. i also love the concept of baby!dickie being obsessed with watermelons and wanting to eat them forever
dewey decimal system!!! librarian babs reference!! fdjkh she's such a nerd i love it
babs trying to talk about romance and dick's like 'lol nah what abt fighting' lmao
i Do Not like babs hitting dick while talking abt 'i was segueing into talking about romance, hint hint'
this is romance? dick giving exactly 0 fucks?
why are these writers obsessed with hinting at dick and donna??? like first dixon and now grayson??? please stop!!!! i do love how he says he loves her bc 🥺🥺🥺 i love them
ur not being slick having babs call donna 'donna' and kory 'starfire', i see you grayson. i see ur hate for kory.
and reducing kory to just her body, and dick's sexual attraction to her boils my blood
i'm choosing to interpret babs's face in that panel as her being attracted to kory too
i do like that dick talks about being in love with kory, and thinking about still being with her. a) i'll take those crumbs, and b) thats how i see dick's relationship to love as being (though devin views him as kinda flighty and unfaithful so idk how we're agreeing on this lmao)
pls stop talking shit abt huntress devin, ur the one who made dick/hel a thing
since devin loves her brudick subtext, i'm side-eyeing the mention of bruce there
also why are we hinting at cass pls stop
babs being jealous and petty pls stop
the ending was smooth i have to admit it. if it was any other ship i'd probs love it but as it is, i'm tired of everyone else being downplayed in favour of the ~babs is dick's true loooooveee, it's always been herrrrr, from the beginningggggg~
i don't mind babs being dick's first crush though, in fact that's my hc for him because hello?? who wouldn't have a crush on babs??
thank you mr stelfreeze for accurately portraying babs' bitchface bc she's being a petty bitch here (and i love her but lmaooo i hate this whole thing)
next is the files on the bludhaven pd and i do not caaaare
then there's a timeline, but i don't care about any timeline that dixon writes. i'm petty though so i'm gonna read it and talk abt why i don't like the retcons.
i hate the dickbabs reference in YEAR FUCKING 3 jfc. pls stop with the retcons.
also lmao the difference between the way dick's canon relationship from that time is described in the shittiest way possible (though reluctant at first, dick begins a long and tumultuous romance with teammate starfire.) and how he wrote dick and babs' relationship (robin first teams with ... barbara in her guise as batgirl. the two will pair time and again over the course of their careers and develop a burgeoning affection for one another) this was at a time when they weren't even remotely interested in each other!!! there was no affections there dixon! no matter how much you wish it to be true!! and again the contrast with 'starfire' and 'barbara'! like it's dehumanising and i hate it.
and he can't even bother to get the new teen titans' team name right.
no mention of kory's importance in dick becoming nightwing, nope we ignore that bc it's thanks to superman now.
stepping away from the way he hates kory to talk about the way he hates jason! jason's described as a 'troubled orphan' and a 'juvenile delinquent'.
no mentions of how jason and dick bonded but as soon as tim gets introduced he talks about how dick and tim 'switfly bond as brothers'.
another incredibly impersonal description of dick and kory's relationship (the wedding of dick grayson and kory anders (aka starfire) is aborted by the rogue titan raven. dick and kory soon part company and dissolve their relationship.) but at least he calls her kory this time.
also i love how he speeds up through all the 'non important' development for dick but spends a whole page talking about all the bullshit he's been writing for nightwing. i understand why, but it's just lmaooooo 🙃 when you read it like that, it really shows how shitty this comic is.
talks of the 'doomed relationship' between dick and hel and i really hate it pls stop
the last page is dick's evaluation by the police academy and i do not care so i'm skipping it too.

Take Back the Cake, Burn the Shoes, and Boil the Rice (5/11)
Within two months there have been two murders of Gotham newlyweds moments after the ceremony. The only connecting factor was both brides wore the same designer’s work. Needing to establish who exactly is behind the crimes, Bruce enlists Tim and Stephanie to have the biggest wedding Gotham high society has seen in decades, putting a target on their heads not just for the killer, but Gotham society too. It goes about as well as you’d expect.
Ao3 Link Here!
In the first hour on conversation with Rebecca Andrews, her phone had rung no less than three times.
“It’s… he’s just very worried about me at the moment.” She uttered, pulling out more inspiration boards for Stephanie (and Cassandra) to muse over. Why Steph had brought Cass she wasn’t entirely sure. It was not an insult to say that the girl’s fashion sense was lacking, nor did she really know what looked good on Stephanie. But, to the public, and Stephanie supposed in reality too, she was the Maid of Honour, and that did come with certain obligations.
Of course, Cass was also there to pick up any inconsistencies in the woman’s actions or thinking or…anything really, that would set off alarm bells.
As for the dress itself, a silhouette decision had been somewhat easy.
“Please no trumpet or slinky numbers. It has to be a little conservative.” Stephanie wrung her hands. “I’ve got a lot of scarring on my back and chest… rather not show those off. And we’re thinking of the Cathedral for the venue, after this that’s where Tim and I are heading, so I don’t want…”
“Oh no, no, no. I know the Dean and the Bishop. Stuffy old men if there ever were a pair.”
Rebecca had smiled in a friendly manner then, hand over her mouth thinking, pulling Stephanie to the centre of her old workshop. It was neat and fancy, with one wall entirely constituting windows that looked out onto the other red brick tenements of this area of Gotham. Three months ago, Rebecca may have prided herself on being a hidden gem, now it seemed she was hidden for a reason.
“Do you just want shoulders covered, or full sleeves?”
Cassandra piped up from where she was sat, behind one of the old green sewing machines within the studio. She was resting an elbow on the table, watching amusedly.
“I want her, and I know Tim would love it, to look like Cinderella.”
“How do you know that?” Stephanie’s tone was a bit pointed, still raw from last night. Cassandra only smiled, not giving anything away, and shrugged.
Rebecca meanwhile nodded, brain sparking off with ideas.
“Yes… I can do that. You practically are this city’s Cinderella case, aren’t you?”
“I mean… I guess so?”
Guess so. The parallels practically draw themselves, Steph. She berated herself as measurements were taken. She was wearing workout leggings and a tank top, fully intending to run to college once the ordeal was over. Not sweeping cinders from a fireplace, but certainly not Gotham’s highest social circle frequenter.
“If I may ask…” Rebecca began tentatively, measuring Stephanie’s under-bust and legs. “Why me? You must have… heard…”
The phone rang again, and Rebecca only sighed, excusing herself.
Left alone in the studio, Stephanie frowned. “I don’t want a Cinderella dress, Cass.”
“What do you want?”
Steph jolted. “What?”
“You don’t want sexy, you don’t want princess, so…”
“I’d rather have nothing.” Steph grumbled to herself. Cassandra caught it and gave her a dangerous look. Steph sighed heavily and looked out the window. “What Bruce wants he gets. What everyone else feels is irrelevant.”
“Steph.” Cass’s tone was sharp, and Stephanie knew somewhere inside herself that she was being a brat, but she was still upset from yesterday at Tim. At herself. She didn’t know why she was so frightened. She just knew in her churning gut that she wouldn’t be enough to hold him to her. She never had been. And he was too lovesick to realise it. And she was too weak to tell him no.
She wanted the job over fast, but they still had weeks to go. Her mood had turned foul, and she was increasingly biting at everyone. Tim, her mother, Cassandra, her classmates… She was slipping. But she was miserable, and for the first time in a long while, couldn’t find a way to cope. She felt like she was regressing.
Rebecca trundled in with bundles of fabric.
“Sorry about that!” She huffed. Underneath the piles of fabric she held a small portfolio. Thin taffeta, structured satin and fine lace tumbled onto a table. She held out the portfolio for Stephanie to take and look through. “So, here’s some rough designs I’ve done in the past, we can use one as a base and go from there. First off, I want to know what your main fabric is to be. Not all three, only for the detailing.”
Stephanie’s eyes were drawn to the lace, but then Cass stepped in. “I like taffeta. You’ll look like a princess.”
“I suppose.” Dragging her eyes away, she looked at the see-through taffeta, then down at one of the designs she had opened on. Saying nothing, she stared a little longer.
Rebecca smiled patiently. “It’s a lot huh?”
“I just… I didn’t think my wedding was going to be this big.” Telling the truth, Stephanie told herself it was to make Rebecca more at ease. “We have to scale up.”
“Hmm.” Stephanie watched Cassandra watch Rebecca, who was musing over what Stephanie had said. “Well, let’s go for this. What are your flowers?”
“…Carnations.”
“Car—oh gosh. Okay, and your shoes?”
“I haven’t…I thought you should buy the dress first.”
Rebecca laughed. “Oh, you’d be surprised. What about jewellery? Any ideas for that?”
“I…”
“Dad wants her in pearls.” Cassandra butt in again. Stephanie bit her tongue. “Family jewels and all that.”
“Ah, pearls. The something borrowed part of the rhyme? And your hair?”
“I want it down.” For that she was certain. “Or mostly down.”
“So… a high neck? But your hair down?”
Her sceptical tone made Stephanie’s hackles rise. Rebecca circled around Stephanie, face pinched. Stephanie’s heartrate picked up from the critique and staring.
“If we do a bateau neckline we can go a little lower with the back. And your hair can’t be down, not with a high neck and full skirt. You’ll look matronly.”
“But I –”
“I’ll give you a veil, don’t worry, no-one will get a clear view of any scarring. You’ve got a swan’s neck. Let’s show it off, hmm? We’ll go for taffeta and lace. Soft. But grand. No ruffles, no sparkles.”
Rebecca took the portfolio from Stephanie’s hands and turned to a memorised page. “This. Longer train, higher neck. You got your long sleeves, got the full cathedral train – fittingly – you got grand princess… but none of the tackiness. Sound good?”
Taken aback by the competence the woman displayed, Stephanie nodded. It wasn’t what she wanted, not entirely, but it would suit the occasion. If it ever got to that stage. Perhaps Bruce would solve it after this first meeting.
“When do you want me back?” Stephanie asked.
“Four days.”
She had a seminar in the afternoon, but, “I can do the morning.”
“Nine o’clock sharp please. We’ve got a lot to do in not a lot of time.” Rebecca turned to see Cass watching her. She didn’t seem off put by it. “How many bridesmaids have you chosen?”
“Just Cass. And Tim just has Dick for his best man.”
Rebecca smiled absent-mindedly, allowing Stephanie off the pedestal. “So not large in that regard. That’s fine. What will you be wearing?”
“Something gold.” That part of the wedding, Cass was pleased with.
“White and gold colour scheme.” Stephanie explained, grabbing her little backpack.
“Ah. Just the two colours? No in-between? No cream or ivory or custard?”
Stephanie managed to laugh. “No, no. White and gold. That’s all.”
Rebecca nodded. “The dress will have to be pure white then. No ivory for you Miss Brown.”
“Mrs Wayne.” Cass nudged Steph teasingly, who had turned white, close to her limit and wanting nothing more for the appointment to be done.
“Drake.” She coughed, trying to hide her discomfort. “Drake-Wayne.”
Neither girl missed Ms Andrew’s eyes sparking off. She smiled, but it seemed a little hollow.
“I’ll see you on Thursday.”
Steph nodded, Cassandra gently pulling them towards the exit.
“Thursday nine in the morning. Thank you, Ms Andrews!”
“Bye Stephanie.” She seemed to remember something and called out to the girls. “You won’t regret choosing me! Thank you for the chance to prove I’m bankable!”
Right on time, her phone began to ring.
Shutting the door to let them out onto the concrete stairwell, both girls knelt right down, and tried to listen to the conversation. Nothing could be heard through the solid stone walls and heavy wooden door.
Huffing, Steph caught the time after she pulled out her second phone. “I got class and then Tim and I are going to speak to the Bishop. Gotta bribe our way in there.” Glancing sideways, she looked at Cass. “What are you doing now?”
Cass did not answer. Instead, she forced Stephanie to a place she did not want to go.
“You don’t like what she’s making for you.”
“…No.”
“Then why –”
Stephanie’s temper flared once more, and she snapped at Cassandra.
“I don’t know what I want, okay? I just don’t. That allowed? Fucking…” She bit at Cass, who only glared at her. Cassandra had never been one to back off when Stephanie was in a foul mood. “I trust this designer to make me a nice dress and I’ll wear it with the biggest goddamn smile on my face. Tim can have his little fantasy and leave me empty at the end of it.”
The insult to her brother mortified Cassandra. For as much as she loved Stephanie, she also loved Tim. Tim who had, as far as Cassandra could tell, done nothing but be open with the girl a few steps down from her. She chided, “Stephanie!”
“Oh God I am not in the mood for a –”
Steph was shoved down several stairs, Cassandra having had enough of her self-pity. She gasped, clinging tightly to the wall in an attempt to catch her breath from the sudden jolt.
“Grow up.” Cassandra spat out. “Remember why you are doing it.”
Stephanie felt like she had been punched and was unable to catch her breath. Moving to hold onto the handrail, she turned back up to Cassandra, only to find her Maid of Honour was looking on with frustration. A frustration very close to anger directed straight at Stephanie.
There was something in the look Stephanie gave Cassandra in response, one akin to betrayal, that made Cass snort. She was not going to indulge Stephanie any further and left, whirring past her with no goodbye.
The bottom door slammed shut, definitively letting Steph know that she wasn’t welcome to spend the night with Cassandra.
Feeling very close to tears, Stephanie rubbed at her eyes in the empty stairwell, sniffed, then began to run, trying to leave her mood behind her.
She walked to the cathedral after class, feeling close to punching the next person who grabbed her hand without her permission, or asked her for news about the wedding, or who questioned her with such a hungry look in their eye, that it made her feel oddly frightened and unsafe.
Gotham had too many cathedrals for too many denominations, but they had ended up at this one because it was where Bruce’s parents were married and it was where their funeral service was held. They were trying to get as much sympathy from the public as they could.
It was built from an oily black stone that looked like it was almost sweating, it looked so slick, and inside it was the very definition of Gothic. And yet somehow it managed to be filled with light and colour. It was damaged or bits of it were blown up it seemed every other week, and yet it had endured.
Stephanie found Tim inside, sat at the front of one of the aisles. The way the light was falling through the stained-glass windows cast colourful patches across the row.
His hair looked very black and thick.
Stephanie stared at him from across the aisle as he failed to notice her. Tim didn’t look deep in thought or prayer, he just looked sick and lost in his mind, a thousand miles away and spiralling down in his head. He was sallow, almost green he seemed so unwell, and she could offer no comfort. He wasn’t sleeping. Usually he would nap as and when, in weird places and at weird times, but it was enough to keep him going. It seemed now like his own brain was keeping him awake as some part of a sick experiment to watch how the human body fails after denied sleep for so long.
A memory of him lying on her stomach when they were young, both snoozing on her bed, offered itself as a potential solution.
She found herself not really wanting to however and quashed the thought. Where did Tim get off looking like such an abandoned puppy? She was the one who had to have asked to defer her graduation until winter due to time constraints and work overload, she was the one being forced into a role she didn’t want…
And he had the nerve to look like she had broken his heart. Tim, who had done that to her countless times over countless years, thought he was hard done by. She had no patience for it.
But then he noticed her approaching and his eyes flittered to hers. His eyes sparked with life, just for a moment, but then the blue grew dull once more, and the fog resumed.
Something inside her jerked painfully and before she was fully aware of what she was doing, Stephanie had rushed over, stood in front of him, and pulled him forward until he was being cradled. Almost aggressively, her fingers ran through his hair, and she felt him tremble.
They remained silent for a long while, Stephanie’s mind whirring at a thousand miles an hour. She could feel Tim slipping back into his lost thoughts once more. There were not many others present inside, so it was only the quiet sound of muffled footsteps and mutterings, a reassuring humdrum in the background, which kept her focus on him.
“It’s not fair.” She whispered, begging him to understand. “But I... I don’t trust…anyone with us.”
Tim made a mumble which suspiciously sounded like an apology to her. His hands crept up, to hold her elbows, and Stephanie rested her cheek on his head. She found herself scratching behind his ear.
He pushed her away, very gently, only so he could look up at her.
“I’m going to prove it to you. That everyone else doesn’t matter.”
A settled determinism had appeared then on his face and his posture, but Stephanie sighed, disregarding his mood. “I think you’re naïve.”
The bitterness crept back in, despite her regrets of her earlier spiteful thoughts and words, but this time it wasn’t directed at Tim. It was a general despondency and distrustfulness that even Tim, for all his earnestness, couldn’t save her from.
“Let me try.”
“Tim...”
Whatever Tim was going to say in response, she didn’t get to hear, because his open look slammed shut, and he peaked behind her left arm. Stephanie turned to see two elderly men approaching. One in a black suit, one in a robe.
“Mr Drake? Miss Brown?” Asked the man in the suit.
Tim’s game face on, he smiled affably. It seemed to placate the two men, who smiled politely and held their hands out to shake, but as Stephanie watched, she realised what their conversation the other day truly meant.
Tim had sometimes asked her who she truly loved, the suit or him, and she hadn’t understood why he had gotten so upset at her knowing his real name at first. Robin was Tim and Tim was Robin.
But then… that was less and less true. And some of that was her fault.
Tim wanted to prove to her the rest of the world didn’t matter, and yet he was retreating so far inward that soon even his friends and family wouldn’t know him.
Stephanie snaked an arm around Tim’s bicep as he shook hands with the two men, she following suit a moment later.
The Dean looked sterner than the Bishop, and insisted they walk around the cathedral grounds. The Bishop did all the talking after that point as they walked towards the cloisters.
“We understand that desire to marry where one’s family had in the past, and I am sure Mr Wayne would be over the moon…”
“But…” Tim asked, slowly stopping in a patch of light down the long corridor.
“But, well, we usually ask that anyone wanting to get married here attends church every Sunday for at least six months, and you two want to be wed in…four weeks? I’m sorry Mr Drake, but we can’t make an exception to you and Miss Brown.”
“But—” Tim tried to explain, but the Dean cut them off.
“It’s exploitative. We aren’t a pretty venue for a socialite’s wedding. I believe you have your own property for that kind of thing.”
There wasn’t much to say to that, as the pair knew he was right. These guys took their roles seriously, and they knew what Tim and Stephanie’s request looked like.
“Then why didn’t you say over the phone? Why did you invite us here? To chide us for even asking?” Stephanie managed to push back. She tried to measure her tone back down. “We love the cathedral because it is beautiful. We chose it because of its importance to our family. Bruce especially.”
“We aren’t exploiting anyone… least of all you. We know it’s on very short notice. If we had another choice we would be delaying a bit but…”
Tim trailed off, as if the pair were holding off on some dark grief-stricken secret that no-one, not even the Bishop, could know. The two older men exchanged glances, and Stephanie looked at her feet. Talking of exploitation…
“No.” Concluded the Bishop.
“But we –”
“I am sorry, the pair of you.” The Dean did not sound sorry. “But that’s our answer.”
The Bishop at least, looked slightly sorry at Tim and Stephanie’s genuinely sad expressions.
Stephanie, internally, was cursing up a storm. It would look laughable that they had been rejected from here as a venue. They would look entitled, they would look out of touch that they thought they could buy their way in, they would look foolish. She squeezed Tim’s arm repeatedly, practically massaging it. She wasn’t sure if she was comforting him, or doing it to reassure herself.
“I’ll walk you both out.” Said the Bishop, noting that neither were making any movement to leave.
Tim tried very hard not to glare, and they turned, walking with the Bishop. He seemed sheepish, embarrassed as much at himself as for Tim and Stephanie, who were both more than a little white faced, not sure what to say.
“If…if anything happens… if you do get the chance to stretch it out a little, consider coming back.”
Out on the front steps, Tim finally turned to look at the Bishop.
“Why did you agree to meet us? Why not tell Mrs van Rijk that the dates didn’t work, thank you very much but no?”
Stephanie meanwhile was watching people walk by below and across the street. It was looking like it was going to start raining again soon. Mrs van Rijk was determined to have the reception in the manor gardens. Having looked at the scheduled forecast for the next fortnight, Stephanie was not entirely optimistic for next month, even as it was approaching mid-May.
The Bishop had no good answer to give.
“The Dean and I agreed that it was better to tell you the truth in person.”
“So you have a slot that we could fill? But you won’t let us.” Tim was getting pushy now, whereas Stephanie was ready to just drop it. She was having a foul day, best to call it a loss and go home.
Except home was supposed to be at Tim’s. Her bed didn’t even have any sheets on it now, and she was so tired all she wanted to do was crash, and hope her mood improved in the morning.
“Well, yes, however, as the Dean said, there’s no sincere reason for either of you to choose here outside of Mr Wayne’s parents had services here. Sentimental reasons aren’t enough for the church.”
“According to the Dean? You don’t think the cathedral will benefit from something as high profile as this? Or is that too exploitative and cynical?”
Stephanie was taken aback by how aggressive Tim was being. She turned back around and laid a hand on his back, though he did not relax.
“It’s alright.” She said, her tone decidedly not alright. “We’ll find somewhere else. There’s still time.”
“No.” At Tim’s denial, Steph’s hand clenched in his shirt. “Why would you both even jump to the conclusion that Steph and I were using you?”
There was something unspoken in Tim’s question that both Stephanie and the Bishop heard. Stephanie’s grumpiness shifted immediately to upset, and she didn’t miss the way the Bishop’s eyes deliberately trailed up and down from her legs to her face. She stumbled back down a step or two as if she had been punched.
Tim also took a step back, but then his face flushed red, frustration changing to anger.
“You know what—”
Blood splattered over Stephanie, and the sound of a shot rang out. She cried out in shock, quickly realising the Bishop had collapsed on the steps. People on the street screamed and shouted, and Tim looked up to the right.
“He’s been shot.” Stephanie uselessly said. Immediately she was on the floor with him, and she looked up to see Tim tightly bound, like a spring. Someone had shot at them, missing only because Tim and Stephanie had moved down a step each at the wrong moment. Stephanie saw Tim’s line of sight looking to a neighbouring tenement.
“Go,” She urged. “I’ll get him inside. Call for help.”
She could feel dozens of eyes on her, but it felt more akin to her time as Batgirl then as Stephanie. She found the wound, pulsing blood down her fingertips in the Bishop’s left shoulder. It was bright scarlet, and there was a lot, pouring down the steps. Other members of the public, seemingly realising that it was just one gun shot, began to stop and stare, unsure what to do.
Tim shouted directly at one lady to call an ambulance, causing the bystander effect to fall away, then he ran straight for the building, training kicking in. Stephanie hoped he would reach the vantage point before the shooter fled.
She, meanwhile, managed to get Bishop Sherborne just inside the front door, in the patch of coloured light from the rose window. She stared at the trail of blood she had made. The Bishop was resting on her thighs, and she was pressing hard on the wound, trying to stifle the blood flow. The man’s face was turning grey, and his breathing was shallow, so Stephanie knew the ambulance would not arrive in time.
“I’m sorry.” She found herself saying. “I don’t… God, I’m sorry.”
He spluttered blood, lungs filling up, and managed to reach upwards, holding onto her forearm.
She held on tight, and people began to gather. She stared at her fingers, seeing them becoming as red as the robe the dying Bishop wore.
She could feel the man slipping from her.
Tim nearly fell back into the cathedral, just in time for the Dean to arrive to the scene as well. He stumbled a bit, through the small crowd of people migrating towards the dying man on the floor. The Dean yelled at them to maintain their distance, then he did not speak again.
“I couldn’t find them.” Tim said, tears in his eyes as he begged the Bishop and the Dean to understand. The Dean looked blankly on at his dying colleague. Having received no response, Tim knelt, and held the Bishop’s hand.
The blood soon stopped flowing, and the chest stopped rising. Stephanie let out a cry she wasn’t aware she was holding onto, and the suddenness of what had happened caught up with her. She began to sob. Deep, sore gulping cries that hurt her lungs and ripped their way out of her throat.
This man had not been the target. Bruce had made them promise. No more deaths, he’d said.
She looked up at the Dean, begging an apology. Distantly she understood she was hyperventilating, which was not like her. She saw Tim’s hands shaking as he gently tugged the Bishop off her lap, lying him flat on the floor. She looked down, seeing how she her hands were dripping with blood and her clothes were damp and dark. Uncomfortable memories rose up, and she began to desperately gulp down air, unable to see straight. A skeletal smile and a dirty floor throbbed in her head.
She looked again in the direction to the Dean, searching for him in her line of sight wildly. “I couldn’t save him. I’m sorry.”
Tim was around her then, picking her up and setting her aside. The ambulance had arrived, for what it was worth, and would need to speak to them soon enough. He sat them in a dark and damp corner, behind a large pillar and slightly off to the side. Eyes followed them, but they were far enough away to be alone, though still in sight if they were suddenly needed once more. Stephanie buried her face in her hands, the stench of drying blood smearing on her face making her nauseous.
“Steph. Stephie.”
She cried hearing his pet name.
“Stephie you need to breathe.”
“I am.”
“Slower. Hands on my chest. Come on.”
She did as she was told, and Tim whimpered at the blood she had smeared everywhere. “Breathe with me, okay?”
She shook her head, wet and fat tears slipping freely down onto her shirt.
“Sweetheart, you can do it, watch your hands. Breathe up and down.”
Seeing her hands rise and fall slowly with Tim’s chest, she slowly began to match it. She was still crying, but it became manageable.
“What happened?” He whispered. “You’ve seen this before.”
“It’s my fault.”
“No.”
She nodded, eyes squeezing shut. She rumpled Tim’s shirt. “They said no because of me. He was shot because I was the target and they missed.”
“And me. It’s my fault too?”
“No.”
“Then it’s not yours.”
Looking and feeling an utter state, she leaned forward, letting Tim catch her and pull her close. Steph curled up into a ball, and his legs bent upwards to allow her to perch herself in a manner that meant she was compressed between his chest and thighs. Tim rested his chin on her head, and watched the Dean say goodbye to his co-worker once the ambulance had taken away the body.
The police had arrived then, and to Tim’s surprise, Commissioner Gordon was amongst them. Though on further musing it made sense after what looked like the assassination of a major public figure.
He recognized Tim, and after a moment clicked that the blonde curled up ball in Tim’s arms was the girl Babs had taken to helping out recently.
He walked over, bending his knees to check on them both.
“You doing alright kiddos? No injuries?”
“No.” Tim shook his head. “But I think whoever was shooting aimed for us. We moved down a step just before they fired.”
Gordon leaned back on his heels. “Why would someone be aiming for you?”
Stephanie realised Tim had put his foot in it. Neither knew how much information Batman had shared with the Commissioner. And of course, Tim and Stephanie knew nothing of wedding murders and unlucky wedding dress designers.
“...I don’t know. I just... feel it.”
It was weak, but Gordon pretended to buy it.
“You will both have to give witness statements...”
Stephanie nodded, emerging from the cocoon that was Tim’s embrace. Gordon’s shoulders heaved up and down at the sight of her.
“You didn’t need to sit with him. The Dean told me what you did.”
“...Couldn’t leave him alone out front.”
“No.” Gordon sighed, rubbing his hands on his trousers. “Once we’ve got your statements, go home and rest up. Why were you two here anyway?”
Tim looked up, to see the Dean staring at them. He still appeared very much in shock, blank and uninvolved with what had just occurred. Tim’s gaze seemed to animate him, and slowly, like the old man he was, he trotted over.
“They were here…” said the Dean, ringing his hands, “to book their wedding venue.”
Tim gave a strangled noise. He thought the man was here to mock them, to point the finger. His colleague was dead because of their entitlement. Never mind that they could have been told no over email or the phone, never mind that Tim and Stephanie weren’t supposed to be targets until the wedding day… they couldn’t have known. Tim tried to convince himself, otherwise his words to Stephanie of the same fact would ring hollow.
This wasn’t their fault.
Gordon’s nose twitched. “Oh, yes, Babs mentioned that the other day. Congrats you two.”
Sat on the floor, covered in a dead man’s blood, Stephanie could only assume Gordon hadn’t meant his statement to be as ill-timed as it was.
The Dean’s eyes tightened, and he got down to be eye level with the couple still sat on the cold floor.
“I think, I may be acting out of turn here, but please, the 25th of May at two o’clock is a fine time for the wedding.”
Stephanie gave a broken whimper, turning back to rest on Tim’s chest. “No.” She whispered.
Tim ground his teeth together and squeezed her shoulder. Looking at the Dean, he just nodded. They would sort it out later.
Eventually they moved to the pews, which is where Bruce found them an hour later. They gave their statements and were clear to go, but the pair remained, not quite ready to leave. Bruce had a packet of wet wipes in his hands.
Tim felt Stephanie tense next to him and Tim’s own breathing slowed. He couldn’t endure a lecture from Bruce. He was going to bite back the minute Bruce’s tone got out of hand.
To Tim’s surprise, Bruce just sighed, and sat next to Stephanie. Pulling out a tissue, very carefully, he began to wipe the blood off her hands. Tim watched as Stephanie slowly turned towards Bruce, still a little tearful. She was welcoming the affection from him in a way Tim had never seen from either Bruce or Stephanie before. A strange ripple of jealousy migrated through his gut.
Stephanie sniffed a little, attempts to talk choking her throat.
“You said no more deaths.”
“I did…” Bruce sighed, though it did not sound like he was angry. Disappointment was there, because of course it was, but it was somewhat tempered knowing that the pair were undoubtedly crucifying themselves regardless of his opinion. “But I said you were to leave the investigation to me. I missed this. And now a man is dead. And it could have been you.”
He handed the tissues to Stephanie so she could clean her face. She smiled weakly and began to scrub at her cheeks, revealing raw red skin under her makeup.
Tim pinched one for his own hands. “Any news on that front? What did you find from the vantage sight?” He asked, trying not to sound too aggressive.
“…Whoever it is. They aren’t leaving anything behind. But I have a few leads. The designer and her boyfriend, the main pair…”
“She and our wedding planner were the only ones who knew we were coming here today.” Stephanie whispered.
Bruce nodded. “And the Bishop and the Dean…” He said, turning to see that the Dean was nowhere in sight. “But I don’t think it’s the Dean.”
“Somehow I doubt Mrs Van Rijk is responsible either.” Tim muttered.
“Did Cassandra say anything? About this morning?” Stephanie interjected.
Bruce gave a look which suggested Cassandra had said a lot of things.
“I’m needing a plug on her phone. She doesn’t have any private social media, nor email. That partner of hers… There’s been multiple incidents of the police called out to her residence in the past for domestic disputes.”
“Same boyfriend who won’t stop calling her?” Tim raised his eyebrow as he asked. It seemed obvious to him who was behind it. Abusive boyfriend couldn’t let his girlfriend be independent of him. Why was Bruce messing around?
“Needs confirming.”
“But –”
“You’re better than this Tim. Circumstantial evidence is not enough to build any case on.”
The insult threw Tim down two or three pegs. He loathed to be spoken to like that. He was better than what? Himself? Was it just another dig at how Bruce thought Tim was slipping?
Bruce sighed once more. “On a grimmer note. This whole event… it seems you did the right thing, trying to help Bishop Sherborne. Comments online have been very sympathetic and praising.”
“We didn’t even do anything.” Stephanie pled. Her face was turning a milky shade of green.
“Regular civilians comforting a dying man in his last moments is not something to be sniffed at, nor is running into the building to try and find the shooter.” He looked at them both individually, trying to make them understand. “And seeing through having the wedding here of all places.” Bruce paused, looking around. Tim believed this place held nothing but bad memories for him. How it must have seemed like Tim and Stephanie were spitting on his parent’s graves. “Shows you’re not frightened. People like that.”
“It feels manipulative… to use his death for our benefit…”
Tim just sighed. “Maybe. But it’s all to catch this murderer.”
Stephanie turned back to look at Tim. “All of it? Really?”
Tim struggled to reply, and Bruce took that as his signal to go. “Will you go back to Park Row? Or with me to the manor?”
Tim kept his and Stephanie’s eyes locked when he muttered. “We’ll go to mine.”
“Very well. I’ll see you tomorrow. No night job tonight. Try to sleep.”
With Bruce gone, Tim picked up a clean wet wipe, and gently began to stroke places Stephanie had missed on her own face. One place on her neck, he knew from experience used to make her sigh and close her eyes when he used to kiss or stroke it, and sure enough, she shut her eyes and began to relax bit by bit as he cleaned her up.
When they did return to Tim’s apartment, Tim took an almighty gamble.
“I know we said I would sleep on the sofa whilst you were here but… Steph, you okay to be alone tonight?”
She screwed her eyes shut, standing at the entrance to Tim’s closet. She had on her pyjamas and was squeezing her teddy like it was a stress ball.
“When was the last time you slept? All the way through the night?” She asked, refusing to answer his question.
“A while.”
She was trying to make the situation about him, deflecting and pretending her feelings didn’t count for as much as his. He grumbled to himself, knowing it was not a productive way of coping.
Stephanie smiled at him, trying to be cheeky, but it fell flat. “Then… you can stay. It’s a big bed anyway. If you have a nightmare…”
“If you have a nightmare…”
“We’ve never slept in the same bed before.” She muttered as she clambered in. Fluffing up her pillow, she rested down, laying a little bit like a corpse in a coffin. Tim very quickly joined in on his own side.
“We have.” He disputed.
“Not like this. Under the covers.”
Tim wiggled his eyebrows, and Stephanie snorted. Her laugh very quickly became sombre. Tim pressed his cheek down on the pillows. Already under the covers it was becoming warm with her lying next to him.
“Thank you, Tim. For today.”
“It wasn’t our fault.”
“No. But I freaked out.”
“You’re under stress.”
“And you’re not?”
“Everyone reacts differently to trauma and –”
“Sweetheart…” She kissed his cheek, and Tim fell silent. The gaze she received could only be described as adoring, and she hoped her own expression was equally smitten. “All these excuses you give me…”
She shifted, moving closer and closer until they were laying inches apart, practically sharing their breath. Her hand crept up, cradling his cheek. Gulping a little, Tim moved as she bid him. She shifted the pillows, propping herself up enough that her torso was above the sheets, but still shallow enough that she could sleep. She cradled Tim, pulling him so his head rested on her stomach. Both hands curled around his head, one stroking his hair, the other his exposed cheek
“I’ll sleep when you sleep, okay?”
The only sound in the room that Tim could make out was her muffled pulse and breathing. He was warm. He had been given something he had been craving since it had been taken from him years ago, only to not realise until recently how much he missed it. He inhaled deeply, distantly smelling the candy scented soap she used, and closed his eyes.
In his own bed, surrounded by Stephanie, and exhausted beyond measure, it did not take long for Tim to fall asleep, nor did it take Stephanie long to follow suit. She’d have a horrid sore neck and headache the next morning, but it was nothing one dose of painkillers wouldn’t mask.
The pair slept a full eight hours. No nightmares.
When Tim woke up to the natural morning light drifting through his curtains, and a blonde messy lump next to him, he tried to stop himself from crying. The emotional relief was so sharp, so intense, it nearly overwhelmed him.
He could do it, he told himself for the thousandth time. He could show her. This was how it was supposed to be.

I know I talk about Jason and Steph parallels a lot but one major similarity between them is that they are the only two members of that Batfamily that have actually died.
Now before any of you say anything about how Damian died or how Steph faked her death or how Cass died twice what I mean is they are the only two members of the Batfamily who were dead both in comics and dead to us the readers. When Jason died and when Stephanie died we did not expect them to come back, the reader thought that was legitimately the end of their stories. Jason’s death affected Batman comics for years and was the entire reason Tim Drake’s character was created, even now he’s still ‘the Robin who died’ despite the fact that literally every Robin has died at one point or another because Jason’s death was supposed to be exactly that, his death we never expected to hear from him again. Same with Steph, time and time again we’ve seen women stuffed in fridges in comics and then never heard from again. No one thought that Steph was going to come back, no one expected her to the most any one hoped for was a memorial case for her and Cass dreaming of her. Steph coming back was a surprise and a victory for women but not for a second in the years she was dead did any of us believe she would be alive again.
But everyone else? We knew those death’s were a gimmick, we knew they were coming back. The times Cass died she came back within a panel or a few pages, when Dick’s heart stopped we were shown he was fine the very next page, sure some of the characters thought he was dead but the readers were literally watching him have super spy adventures at the same time. When they ‘killed’ Tim they made sure to constantly show the reader that no he’s actually alive and he’s trying to get back home. Bruce’s death was a big event but we all knew it wasn’t going to stick, it wasn’t going to last not only because comics like to keep a status quo but also because Tim’s whole first art in Red Robin was all about proving how Bruce wasn’t dead and bringing him back. He was barely dead to the characters and he wasn’t dead to the readers.
Damian’s ‘death’ is something I refuse to acknowledge for many reasons. Firstly it was the beginning of the end for DC’s respect for Robins. Before killing a Robin was a major event both in comics and outside of comics, Jason’s death was a huge event that had a voter poll; his death changed the entirety of the Batfamily and is the entire reason Tim exists. Steph’s death resounded through comic fans and led to large-scale controversy and one of the biggest feminist movements in comics that the industry ever saw. War Games was the start of the angst period in comics where writers seemed to have a bet going on in who could make their characters more miserable or how many they could ‘kill’ off. In one way or another Jason and Steph’s deaths meant something and the repercussions resounded out both for the characters and the readers.
After Damian’s death though, killing a Robin became something DC did every week. It was nothing more than a plot point they could play with for a while instead of an actual important event, killing a Robin used to be an actual weighted choice that writers would have to be forced into by editorial (as they were with Steph) and something that came with heavy consideration (as it was with Jason).  With Damian though it was for nothing more than shock value and to sell comics.
Damian’s death is something I refuse to acknowledge merely on principle (a little like with the Ric storyline). The reason I don’t acknowledge Damian’s death is because at that point in comics death had become something of a joke the characters themselves even joke about it ‘no one stays dead anymore’ or ‘didn’t you die? I got better’ ect so we all knew that Damian could be brought back any time the comic writers wanted and Damian was too important of a character and too popular to not be brought back. After Damian’s death literally everyone who was sad about it said ‘well we just have to wait until they bring him back’ there wasn’t the resigned acceptance that fans had with Steph where we all believed she would stay dead because the girl killed off for man pain is pretty much never brought back and Jason’s death was such an intrinsic part of the DC universe for years that when he was actually brought back to life every one flipped their shit.
No one for a second believed that Damian’s death was permanent instead it heralded the age where DC would ‘kill’ off a Robin whenever they were stuck with what to do. Not only that but it also heralded the age where DC began to show what a huge disrespect they had for adopted families, before that point the Batfamily was the most famous found family there was and DC actually showed that just because they weren’t related didn’t make them any less than family.
However after Damian’s ‘death’ they threw it all out the window and started acting like adopted families were somehow less than blood families. DC writers would say in interviews that one of the reasons for Damian’s death was that ‘they wanted to show Batman holding the body of his dead son’ despite the fact that he’s already done that. Batman already did that in Death In The Family when Jason died. Batman already held the body of his dead son when he held dead Jason’s body, we didn’t need to see that again.
Also when Jason came back, the whole plot of Under The Red Hood was about how Jason wasn’t upset that he died, he had already forgiven Bruce for that, what he was upset about was the fact that Bruce let his killer practically walk free (because Arkham is a revolving door). He was upset that Bruce pretty much shrugged and moved onto Tim (no being mean to Tim here I’m talking about Jason’s point of view because it’s kind of messed up to be replaced like six months after your death). Jason wanted proof that Bruce cared about him and wanted Bruce in a way to kill the Joker so that the Joker could never hurt him or anyone else again but Bruce couldn’t give him that because it went against his code. However when Damian died the only thing that stopped Bruce from killing Heretic was Heretic’s resemblance to Damian. It’s incredibly messed up and is pretty much saying that Bruce cares more about his biological son than his adopted one, which is bad writing.
The fall out of Jason and Steph’s death were all about how their deaths had changed the world around them. Jason’s death made the Batman and comics in general darker in a sense and we’d always be reminded of this tragedy hanging over the Batfamily. Steph’s death rocked the Batfamily to its core leading to Barbara and the Birds of Prey going to Metropolis and Tim and Cass going to Bludhaven, Tim and Cass’s entire sibling relationship could be argued to have been founded on their shared grief over Steph since before then Tim had routinely stated that Cass creeped him out and that they weren’t friends, Steph’s death even changed the way writers wrote the Gotham underworld and made Black Mask one of the primary antagonists the Batfamily face that we know him as today. But the fall out of Damian’s death was not how it rocked the world, how it changed how Gotham and the Bats operated and shifted their dynamics, no the fall out of Damian’s death was all about trying to bring Damian back.
It could be argued that Jason was one of the first major deaths in comics and it wasn’t as normal to bring a character back in comics as it is today but it still is incredibly bad and messed up writing that Bruce did nothing but search for a way to bring Damian back when Jason didn’t get the same treatment. Even in comics we knew Damian’s death wasn’t permanent because all Bruce did was try to bring Damian back, even making a cover story that Damian was studying abroad because even the characters knew Damian would be back eventually.
Damian, Jason and Steph’s deaths were all gross and overly violent but it really felt like DC made us watch an 11 year old brutally die just for the heck of it. That’s why I like to say that if Cass and Steph had been around then Damian would have never died in the first place (I have mental images of Cass stopping Heretics sword like a badass while Steph whisks Damian away to safety).
To me I only consider the even Robins, Jason Todd and Stephanie Brown as the dead Robins because when they died we did not know they were coming back, they weren’t revealed to actually be okay in the next panel or comic they were dead and they were the only characters well and truly dead both in the comics and to us the readers.
They are the only characters in the Batfamily to truly beat death and they way they beat death in comics and metaphysically, parallels each other. Steph came back due to public outcry and the girl wonder feminist movement, when it was revealed that she was alive in comics she said it’s because Black Mask didn’t kill her, she survived, she was stronger than a gross male and gross male stereotypes it was a victory both for Stephanie and for every girl who loved comics. Jason was brought back because the guy who came up with Under The Red Hood had a really good idea; in comics he was brought back through a mysterious force to force Batman to face his past regrets.
Jason Todd and Stephanie Brown are the only Robins to actually come back from the dead.

By sayin' that what we do still matters. I mean, that's why I wanted to drag us out here  That's why I wanted to -- to work a case, to save lives, you know? 'Cause it is -- it's a -- it's a crap job.  We do the ugly things so that people can live happy.
S: lucky them
D: We still do the job. But we don't do it for us We did it for Jack,  for Mom, for Rowena. We owe it to anybody who has ever gave a damn about us to keep putting one foot in front of the other. No matter what. And, hey, man, like you said, now that Chuck's gone,
Giulia: AH THEY THINK
D: we're finally on our own.  We are finally free to... move on, you know?

Giulia: Asking for a friend
Nat : Can Sam just stop Period
Kat: Ugh chuck again
Giulia: Asshole
Nat : We all know it
Zee: I hate it
Tumblr media
Nat : Promo?
Nat : So young,  and the way he's so full of himself "obviously", so proud
Giulia: So cocky
Giulia: Bastard
Kat: Makes me giggle bc the fandom always says he doesn’t age
Zee: I can’t wait for the million red gifs
Kat: I’ve already reblogged a few sets
Zee: I saw
Kat: And made a post about his beard
Kat: Did you look before the episode?
Zee: I can’t hear you. I’m entering a tunnel
Why am I not even a bit surprised.
Zee: I’m talking about the gifs Giuls will start slapping us with
Giulia: Idk I don t feel like it. I’d would love to make them nicer BUT NO ONE I ASKED TOLD ME HOW so....
Nat : I’ll rewatch the first 5 minutes and keep on squirting

Do you prefer Steph as Spoiler, Robin or Batgirl? (I like all three but in a pinch I think I like her as Spoiler the most)
This got very long! Sorry, but apparently Tumblr, being a functional website, won’t let me put this under a cut!
So like, in terms of my all-time favorite Steph characterization, I prefer her as Spoiler. My favorite Steph ever, of all time, is, without a doubt, Steph as Spoiler, as seen in Cass’s initial run as Batgirl. It’s home to some of the best moments of characterization, the foundation of her friendship with Cass, and just fundamentally broadened Steph’s character and rounded her out, more than her role in Robin ever managed to do, imo.
Tumblr media
(Batgirl #20 - a classic)
Although, that being said, her Robin appearances in that run gave some stunning moments too. So maybe I should just give full credit to this creative team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Batgirl #53)
However, in terms of what I, if suddenly given control of a Stephanie Brown comic book, would write her as? And what I’d love to see more of her as?
Robin, hands down.
Steph just makes sense as a Robin. She’s deeply connected with Gotham City, her relationship with Bruce was turbulent and complicated. She has thematic similarities to Jason and Dick in turn, and, on the few occasions that she and Bruce were allowed to get along, they had a solid partnership.
Tumblr media
(Batman: Gotham Knights #22 - insert that Adele gif here, please and thank you)
Steph and Bruce’s dynamic is under-explored and fascinating to me. Their push and pull of her looking up to him and being infuriated by him, him wanting to protect her by forcing her out of the game as part of his misguided grief for Jason (which is part of why I struggle with their dynamic in the Nu52, because so much of Bruce and Steph’s classic relationship was defined by Bruce’s grief) and his occasional recognition of her talents and wanting to foster them, could have been a truly fascinating Batman and Robin dynamic.

(Robin #92 - so much goddamn potential here, UGH)
Bruce finds himself unexpectedly being able to confide in Steph about things that he’s reluctant to talk about with the others. The two of them are virtually the opposites in terms of a lot of things, but both of them are drawn to Gotham as an idea, as something that needs protecting. Unlike pretty much every other member of the “core” Bat Fam, Steph and Bruce have never really been affiliated with any other city, and Steph hasn’t even been affiliated with another team. It’s not too far of a stretch to imagine that the two of them could bond over this, and their different perspectives on the city.
As Robin, Bruce was finally helping Steph full time; he was, as he said, teaching her. He was fostering her skills and talents, and helping her develop fully as a crime fighter. But as he was doing so, it highlighted Steph’s flaws as a character. Her anger, her self-righteousness, and her sheer stubbornness. It was a strong parallel to late-era (and post-retcon) Jason as Robin, but here, we managed to get glimpses of Bruce’s development, and how he and Steph could grow together.

(Detective Comics #796 - the fact that this was technically published AFTER Steph did get fired only makes me more bitter)
But of course, no one was willing to give this relationship (or Stephanie) a chance. Steph was Robin for three issues of the classic Robin comic (with additional appearances in Batgirl and Detective Comics, including some that were printed after that last issue of Robin, because comics!). From her initial appearance as Robin in #126 (May 2004), to her final appearance in #128 (July 2004), we had Stephanie Brown as Robin for three months. It’s ludicrously underwhelming, especially given the amount of potential that Steph and Bruce had.

(Robin #128 - presented without comment and a lifetime of bitterness)
I genuinely believe that Steph’s dynamic with Bruce, connections with Gotham, and overall personality could have made her one of the best Robins, and that being Robin could have opened up some great opportunities for her character. Steph, unlike the rest of the Robins, never really got a chance to spread her wings and grow into the role, which is a damn shame, because I genuinely believe that she could have been great.
And so, if push comes to shove, I’d definitely go for her as Robin, although I do love her as Spoiler and Batgirl.
