Week 18 1 May 2022 — 7 May 2022
Prompt: Art in the style of Takehiko Inoue
The amount of movement in Takehiko Inoue's pieces is utterly phenomenal. I particularly like the very stark ink pieces. I aimed for that sketchy movement and of course picked another dancer.
This piece is based on a photo of Yannick Lebrun from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater taken for the NYC Dance Project.

Blog Post 8 - Research 2
Happy Monday Y'all!
Throughout the last 2 months and some odd weeks, I have found many benefits of the Pescatarian Diet. I wanted to see what the research looked like in relation to my personal findings.
According to Wozniak, "pescatarians were less likely to be obese (OR 0·18; 95 % CI 0·04, 0·75) and less hypercholesterolaemic (OR 0·53; 95 % CI 0·29, 0·95) when compared with omnivores." This was take from a study that was conducted for 13 years. I have noticed that, even if I have not lost a lot of weight, I am not bloated anymore and I am able to do strenuous tasks without stopping multiple times. A few months ago, the stairs winded me. Below is a table taken from Chen that shows the "average intake of different food groups per capita per day in Switzerland" for a Pescatarian (PST) diet in relation to the Swiss Society for Nutrition (RSN) recommendations
Table 1. Food consumption under different Swiss dietary scenarios. Food Items/Scenarios PST RSN Fruits 330 325 Vegetables 296 291 Legumes 23 26 Nuts and seeds 62 50 Cereals 192 124 Meat products 0 33 Fish & seafood 27 6 Eggs 31 18 Dairy products 307 330 Vegetable oils 71 26 Roots & tubers 230 149 Others 299 109 On average, those that follow a Pescatarian diet are meeting daily recommendations in every category except meat, and what they lose there, is made up with roots, vegetables, and others.
Also, shifting to a diet recommended by Swiss society of nutrition (RSN) will be the most beneficial for the environment, cutting down the daily food related environment footprint by ~36% on average across five domains considered here (Chen).
If I am able to not only better my own health, but also better the world around me, why would I not do it? There are Pescatarian options all around us. My boyfriend and I went to Whataburger the other day, and I had accepted I was going to be stuck with a salad, but alas! They had a fish sandwich meal! There is not any place that I can not go due to dietary restrictions, so why harm myself and the planet I live on when I can make a change?
Everyone is absolutely entitled to their beliefs, their practices, their diet choices. Until this project, I lived on chicken tenders. No matter where I ate, I got tenders and fries. I am so glad that I made this change, and I do not think I will go back.

So a coupla nights back I nearly had a moment of terror because I thought I’d mucked up the updates, until I realized it was Monday, not Wednesday, and the update was on track. I probably was too tired to be mucking up with the queue, but here we are. In any case. Because the word count at this point has escalated to 60K+, I’m moving updates to once a week. I’ll just stuff ser Lyrian into a different day when I start posting his story.
Spring fought its way onto the world. Oliver left, and was not replaced. On the first bright, sunny day, cheeks chapped pink by an exceptionally cold and gusty breeze, Adam renewed his agreement with the two boys, and took off over the rooftops. He greeted every water-spout like a long-lost friend, and asked after Linden; their voices were just a little stronger than a whisper with all the snowmelt, and they were just as glad to see Adam, but they had not seen the young wildling with the shattered eyes. Adam went to the stork nest, but it was still empty; he pocketed a fragile half eggshell and raced to the cisterns, asking the fish. He braved a few early finches, who were exceptionally suspicious of the unruly young boy but could be appeased with courtesy.
No one had seen Linden.
He flopped face down on a steep tiled roof, breathing hard and thoroughly put out. He went through the Royal Gardens, where workers were busy making ponds and paths and adding flower beds and hedges, and into the woods where the nobility coursed and hawked and hunted and sometimes disappeared. There, in the dark shadows where snow still lingered, he shouted Linden's name and listened for an answer. But there were only the trees, whispering with their young green leaves, and it wasn't nearly as fun to fight pirates and barbarians alone. He climbed up a stately, elderly linden tree, the fragrant flowers still nothing but buds on its branches, and sighed, feeling abandoned yet again.
The next day he went as far as the river, where Beli and Dane hid under the old stone bridge to fish and talk, and startled the two boys by his presence. Rain chased them all back to the palace, and for nothing else to do Adam gave his old homework journal to the younger boy, and tried to teach Dane some fisticuffs. A king, he'd been taught, should always bear in mind the strengths of the people around him.
He ended up going to the lessons Leminy had snuck into his afternoons, lessons he'd been skipping to look for Linden. For all of a week they held his interest before he slipped away through the back of the kitchen, buying the silence of the chickens in the yard with a heel of bread and a handful of dry cherries. It was harder to sneak out three people but he managed and was quite proud of it, even as he immediately abandoned Beli and Dane and ran into the woods. He found them, that day, draped in dark and heavy fog; by the time caution brought him to a halt he could scarce see the path under his boots. When he cried out Linden's name, it echoed at him from every direction, as if other voices were taunting him with it. The whisper of the trees seemed almost a fretful warning.
He launched himself up the old linden tree, hoping if he could climb over the fog he'd be able to see something, but while the tree was easy enough to find, nothing around it looked familiar anymore. Adam almost felt as if the tree were closing its young spring foliage around him, shielding him, hiding him. From what, he couldn't have said. But he knew, as everyone did, that sometimes people went into the woods and didn't come back. Sometimes something almost like them did.
Beli and Dane came looking for him with torches, with sunset threatening and suppertime long past. They all got punishment details, but they were all fine with it, glad and relieved simply to have made it back to the palace, knowing without having to be told that it had been, perhaps, a very close thing.
Caution kept Adam to his lessons for another three days before he launched himself up to the palace rooftops. From the very highest point he could see everything around him; in the woods, far below, he could even make out the pale white smudges of the linden trees in bloom.
"You didn't fall this time!" the familiar voice cried out gladly.
"Linden!" Adam crushed his one true friend in a hug, found himself hugged just as tightly. "Wait, don't squeeze so hard, I've a present for you and you'll smush it."
"A present!"
"Yes, of course a present. That's how you tell people who've left you're glad they've come back."
"Oh, is it only when you leave and come back?" Linden sounded disappointed.
"Well, no, you can give presents any time you like, but it's good manners to have a reason. Else it feels more like an obligation and less like a gift." From a pocket Adam drew his handkerchief, and unwrapped it to reveal the half-shell of a stork egg, dry and gone nearly as fragile as one of the Dowager's teacups.
"That makes so much sense now," Linden admitted, and then gasped. "Is it a dragon's eggshell?"
"Nuh-uh." Adam shook his head, and whispered, "Basilisk."
They hunted said basilisk over the rooftops and under the eaves all that golden, merry afternoon, and not a few afternoons after. They went into the woods and sailed their ship into unknown oceans, the dead and fallen giant oak rotting so slowly that their slight weight hardly made a dent. The fog didn't return, but still sometimes Adam merely climbed into the boughs of the linden tree and lingered there, Linden perched close by, kicking bare feet into the green and sweet air. "Do the trees really speak to you?"
"Everything speaks, Adam," Linden replied, examining a bee that had meandered onto their fingers. "Like the fish and the toads and the wriggle-wriggle lizards. The trees just speak quieter. I don't know why you can't hear them, they're louder than the water-spouts."
"Well, yes, but the water-spouts have names and faces and mouths," Adam protested. He was resting against a branch and staring up at the sky as the leaves swayed in the breeze. "I suppose it's harder because I can't see which part is speaking."
"Is it that important, to see a face? It's just a face. I could make a face out of mud and twigs and grass."
Adam grimaced; he knew Linden had a point, and he knew his explanation wasn't one, but for once he couldn't find the words. He was, after all, only ten. "It's a hard question, Linden. Can you ask it later, when I know more things? I'll think on it, I promise."
"Psh, you don't have to." Restless fingers played with his hair. "I can tell you what they say."
"What, like now? Do they speak all the time?"
Linden nodded as Adam straightened up. "They fuss." The bee was thrown into the breeze, to go back to its bee business. "Get down, you're too high. Be quieter, you're too loud. You move too much. You don't drink enough."
"Sounds like a right pack of nannies," Adam couldn't help but grin.
"Right? We're not babies." Linden frowned. "But you did get caught out here on a hunting night. So I suppose maybe they're a little right to fret."
"A hunting night? You mean the fog?" Linden nodded, and Adam sat straddling the branch. "No one talks about that much. Sometimes people go into the woods and they just don't come back out. Or don't come back right."
"They don't," Linden replied, staring at their muddy toes. "I mean, sometimes their skin goes back, but what's inside isn't them anymore. It's..." They flapped a hand towards the heart of the woods. "It's of the Court."
Adam paused. The trees were whispering in the breeze, and he couldn't help but feel as he had that afternoon, when the linden had shielded him against something he could neither name nor comprehend, whispering warnings he couldn't understand. "Why?"
Linden shrugged. "It's payment of some sort. Like blood from a stone or bones from a grave. But I don't like the Court. They still think I'm silly, and I don't like people who think me silly."
"Oh, them." The immediate disdain in Adam's tone made Linden grin.

Myopia Research - Wealth, Locations, Demographics
Types of people, location and wealth.
Most common in Asia
Most common in ages 20 - 29 & over 70s
Main reason Myopia is common in Asia is due to educational pressure and environments
Location & Demographics
Myopia prevalence remains higher in Asia (60%) compared with Europe (40%) using cycloplegic refraction examinations. Studies reporting on non-cycloplegic measurements show exceptionally high myopia prevalence rates in school children in East Asia (73%), and high rates in North America (42%)
The recent myopia boom is attributed primarily to the educational pressure in Asian countries, which prompts children to read for long hours, often under poor lighting and on computer screens. This practice severely limits the time spent outdoors and reduces exposure to sunlight and far vision.
We identified 49 eligible population-based studies including 210,512 individuals aged 0 to 96 years reporting the prevalence of myopia from 16 Asian countries or regions. The pooled prevalence estimate of myopia was highest at 47.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 19.3, 75.2) in Asians aged 20 to 29 years. There was a U-shaped relationship between year of birth and myopia prevalence. The cohort effect especially marked in urban Asian communities such as Singapore and South Korea. The prevalence of myopia of 36.3% (95%CI 27.6, 45.0) was higher in adults aged more than 70 years compared with middle-aged adults, which revealed nuclear cataract-myopia shifts.
This is a snapshot of the rate of myopia seen in children based on recent studies. (Right). More recent studies indicate that myopic macular degeneration is becoming a serious ocular health issue, where it has been reported one of the major causes of permanent blindness in Rotterdam11, Copenhagen12, China13, Chinese Taipei14, and Japan15.
Hong Kong - 62%
Singapore - 53%
China - 47%
USA - 42%
Australia - 31%
UK - 23%
Chile - 17%
South Africa - 10%
Iran - 8%
In the United States, about 40% of adults are short-sighted, up from 25% in 1971. Rates have similarly soared in the UK. But their situation pales in comparison with that of teens and young adults in South Korea, Taiwan and mainland China, whose prevalence rates are between 84% and 97%. If current trends continue, half the world's population will be short-sighted by 2050. And the problem seems to be spreading at a faster rate than ever.
East Asia’s high levels of childhood myopia, also known as nearsightedness, has long been a mystery: It affects as many as 90% of urban 18-year-olds. Researchers have identified possible causes including intensive studying, less time spent outside—even the Chinese language itself. And now a new study has made the mystery even stranger.
Wealth
“We could not explain much of the large variation in prevalence of clinically significant myopia between middle income Shaanxi and low-income Gansu,” the researchers concluded in the study, this week in the Journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
What exactly is it about life in more rural areas that protects children against myopia? The use of blackboards is one possibility, according to the study. In lower-income schools, students own fewer books and are more likely to use blackboards in the classroom, which appeared to have a “protective effect” against myopia, possibly because they require more focusing at a distance.
“It’s amazing that we’ve accepted such huge numbers of people having a condition that requires correction in order for them to perform normally,” he said. “We’re so good at correcting myopia with glasses, contacts, or laser surgery, we’ve come to think of it as simply an optical inconvenience.”
In many countries, however, nothing could be further from the truth, said Nathan G. Congdon, MD, MPH, at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China. “In China, only 20% of children who need glasses actually have them, in part, because parents and authorities worry that glasses will harm children’s vision. Providing spectacles for kids not only helps their vision, but we’ve also found that it has a significant impact on their educational outcomes,” he said.

Cat chasing
Many guardians struggle with having an interspecies household and or their puppy or dog chasing cats.
Interestingly Researchers found that puppies under the age of 12 weeks introduced to a cat within the same household, showed the typical over exuberance of a puppy instigating play and chasing. We have to understand that our dogs, no matter how young, have instincts that they are born with and you cannot punish instincts out of them, no matter how much one may try.
A survey of 3155 respondents was conducted and 7% of the homes had both a dog and a cat within the home. (1) Another survey had 648 respondents who had both a dog and a cat within the home. (2)
Within this study of the respondents 82.9% felt their cat was comfortable with sharing their home with a dog and 91.2% felt that their dog was comfortable sharing their home with a cat. However when asked about the specifics of the relationship they found that of the respondents 20.5% of the same cats were uncomfortable with the dog ranging from one day to seven days in a week and 7.3% of dogs showed uncomfortability with the cat between one day per week up to seven days per week.
56.5% of the cats had threatened the dog and 9.6% caused injury to the dog.18% of the dogs were reported to have threatened the cat and only 0.9% of the dog's had caused injury to the cats.
It was also found that cats who spent more time indoors as opposed to outdoors seemed to have a better relationship with the dog as reported by the guardians.
This study is interesting in looking at how guardians perceive the relationship between their dog and cat but also report injury and threats.
It is known that both dogs and cats can be relinquished due to aggression towards one another.
Researchers wanted to explore this further and look at how a cat responded to a puppy moving into their home to further understand how to help guardians make the best choices.
1248 puppies were used within the survey. Of this number of puppies 1211 puppies were introduced to the cats but 37 still needed to be introduced to the cat at the time of the survey.
Interestingly these results are what the researchers found from guardian observed feedback.
58.9% of the puppies played.
56.6% of the puppies were over-exuberant.
48.7% of the puppies chased.
23.9% were wary and cautious.
3.1% were nervous or fearful.
1.7% were aggressive.
12.9% expressed no interest in the cat.
28.5% interested in a calm way.
Researchers also investigated further into how introductions were conducted. 448 of the puppies between the ages of 12 and 22 weeks were recorded to be introduced to the cat immediately or quite quickly. 448 of the puppies were reported to show undesirable behaviours and 24 of the puppies were reported to show desirable behaviours. 675 puppies were reported to be introduced to the cat gradually and were reported to show one or more undesirable behaviours, 64 puppies were reported to show desirable behaviours. Puppies under 12 weeks old were reported to have 442 puppies to show undesirable behaviours and 53 puppies to demonstrate desirable behaviours.
Looking into this further they also asked whether the introductions were guardian led, animal led. They found that the guardians who let the puppy and cat set the introduction expecting the puppy to be respectful and the cat to teach the puppy respect were the guardians who reported undesirable behaviours, many guardians accepting their puppy and cat will never be able to share the same space within the home and to be segregated. Whereas the guardians who used management, controlled the environment and introduced them gradually had much more success and lower expectations of both animals. (3)
This is where I am going to end my summisations of the journal and explore the conclusion which the researchers and I are agreed that there has to be more education around dogs and cats and the perceived relationships and expectations on both animals.
History shows that for the last 9,000 years dogs and cats have come together through sharing space of settlements with humans and developing relationships with humans. But as we look at evolution of both the dog and the cat we have to understand that as different species evolution has shaped them independently and not merged together for the union of dogs and cats within the same household. (4)
As professionals we know that there are not only a lot of expectations placed on a puppy but also pressure which can result in punishment and reoccurring punishment over a period of time until the guardian decides to either invest in professional help or relinquishes one of the animals. We have a duty of care to educate guardians that this isn't OK.
Of course we do when we work with them, however many guardians as can be seen from the statistics above simply think a car should correct a puppy. But what we are seeing with the puppies on a mass scale is the innate desire to chase, play rough, grab and do things that will either get themselves or the cat injured.
Many dogs and cats can and do live together quite harmoniously yet the dog will still attempt to chase or bark at a cat on a walk. Another research paper looked at the desire to chase based on the animation of motion and whilst I'm not going to dissect that paper within this blog it is important to remember that both dogs and cats are predators and not prey animals but for dogs the animation of the cat moving, running, darting activates the need to chase.
We also need to understand that there are 350 formally recognised dog breeds across the world and whilst we may think we share our sofa with an adorable furry gentle teddy bear ( you aren't far wrong) but we do have to be mindful that dogs were not originally bred to be companions in the sense that they are today but we're artificially selected in breeding programmes to have an intense prey drive, stalking, herding behaviours etc.
Over 9,000 years we can see that dogs and humans have coexisted and we know that in the last few hundred years of confirmed breeding and artificial selection. However professional breeders who breed for breed traits are not seeking to extinct unwanted behaviours from guardians, working dogs are still very much a part of society today across the world and breeders want to breed the best of the best, this will include their breed and genetic distinctive gene traits which makes them that specific breed.
We have to fully understand the dog we share our home with as the individual that they are, be respectful and mindful of their genetics and ancestry in order to have a wonderful bond and cohabitation relationship with them. Placing human ideals onto animals simply will not work, a dog cannot help to chase other animals as much as a bird cannot help to sing.
Instead we have to look at how we can communicate with our individual dog(s) , find what makes them tick, build our value to them so they want to see what we have. We need to respect their genetics and allow them to eye stalk, we have to utilise long lines and be sensible about the parameters of our dogs behaviour. If you have no recall especially around smaller animals or livestock use a long line to keep your dog and other animals safe. Work on communications and games to work with your dog as the species that they are. But don't place unrealistic goals and expectations on dogs and puppies. It isn't fair to them and you are just setting yourself up to fail.

Significant COVID-19 Vaccine Study Censored by Medical Journal Within 24 Hours
Tumblr media
A systematic review of 325 autopsies showing COVID-19 vaccination caused or significantly contributed to 74 percent of deaths was removed from The Lancet’s preprint SSRN server within 24 hours, adding to an increasing number of censored studies on the potential harms of COVID-19 vaccines.
The study, published July 5, examined all autopsies published in peer-reviewed literature to determine whether COVID-19 vaccination caused or contributed to the person’s death.
Researchers searched all published autopsy and necropsy reports related to COVID-19 vaccination through May 18, 2023, resulting in 678 studies. After implementing inclusion criteria, they chose 44 papers containing 325 autopsy cases and one necropsy case. A panel of three expert physicians independently reviewed each case to determine whether COVID-19 vaccination was a direct cause or significant factor in each death.
Of 325 autopsies reviewed, 240 deaths, or 74 percent, were independently adjudicated as “directly due to or significantly contributed to by COVID-19 vaccination.”
Findings showed the most affected organ system in COVID-19 vaccine-associated death was the cardiovascular system at 53 percent, followed by the hematological system at 17 percent, the respiratory system at 8 percent, and multiple organ systems at 7 percent. Three or more organ systems were affected in 21 cases. The mean time from vaccination to death was 14.3 days—with most deaths occurring within a week of the last vaccine dose.

How Wild Animals Cope With Stress—From Overeating To Sleepless Nights
We’re not the only animals that suffer anxiety. From lizards to song sparrows, challenging situations can have long-lasting impacts on species.
— By Liz Langley | April 25, 2023
Many of us react to stressful situations by drinking too much coffee, sleeping too much or not enough, or overeating.
As it turns out, several wild animals also experience physical reactions to stress. The main challenges faced by wild animals are whether they’ll find enough food or whether they become someone else’s food. But sometimes, it’s people that cause the trauma.
For instance, a new study shows the rare Colorado checkered whiptail lizard stress-eats in response to noise. Part of their habitat includes the Fort Carson Army Base, where low-flying aircraft regularly produce sounds louder than what they’d experience naturally. (Read how extreme heat can stress wildlife.)
After observing some of the wild reptiles and taking their blood, the scientists found that during flyovers, the lizards released more of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as moved less and ate more. Eating more likely compensated for the energy lost while experiencing stress, the authors say.
Here are some other ways animals react to challenging situations.
Sleep Troubles
Sleep, for all mammals, is key—and not having enough can be harmful.
“Sleep deprivation, a form of stress, can elicit increased eating in humans and some non-human animals alike,” says Barrett Klein, an entomologist at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse who also studies sleep biology.
In lab studies, fruit flies subjected to social isolation slept less and ate more, and sleep-deprived mice ate more during their recovery. Some butterflies that don't get enough rest forage poorly and lay their eggs on the wrong types of plants.
If some bee species don't get enough sleep, they'll perform their waggle dances, the bee equivalent of GPS, "with a less precise direction component," Klein says via email, giving their spectators less helpful information on where to find food.
Passing on Trauma
Scott Heppell, a fish ecologist at Oregon State University, stops short of saying other animals react to stress like we do.
“That’s a bit too anthropomorphic for me,” Heppell says via email. “But I might say that other animals have somewhat analogous responses,” for example, when stressful events experienced by parents “can affect performance of their offspring.” In humans, that concept is called generational trauma.
Small freshwater fish called sticklebacks appear to pass trauma down to their babies, though the impacts are different among males and females.
In research published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, scientists showed that sons of stickleback fathers who had been exposed to predators were risk takers, but the trauma had no effect on daughters. Mothers exposed to predators had anxious offspring of both sexes—but why remains unknown.
Predator Danger
The mere presence of predators can make animals anxious. Take the song sparrow, a study subject of Liana Zanette, a population ecologist at Western University in Ontario, Canada.
In a 2022 study, Zanette studied wild song sparrows on British Columbia’s Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, where they have few predators. During the study, she put up barriers to ensure that nothing would happen to the birds.
For 18 weeks Zanette’s team intermittently played recordings half of the study birds of friendly animals like Canada geese. No harm, just fowl.
The other half of the birds heard recordings of crows and ravens, which eat sparrow eggs and nestlings.
The results showed that a fear of phantom predators caused these birds to produce 53 percent fewer offspring than the birds that didn’t hear the scary soundtrack.
“The parents are really skittish when they think there are predators around,” Zanette says, so instead of spending their time incubating their eggs or feeding chicks, they flush from the nest.
That all might sound like a bad thing, but evolutionarily the birds’ response is just right. Surviving and producing fewer offspring beats dying and producing none, Zanette says.
Such predator-induced fear can also cause lasting changes similar to post-traumatic stress disorder, she says. In a 2019 study, Zanette found that black-capped chickadees exposed to predators had elevated brain activity and a heightened sensitivity to danger for at least seven days afterward.

Snowshoe hares are the primary prey of Canada lynx. Photograph By Robbie George, National Geographic Image Collection
An Ancient Dance
In Canada’s Yukon Territory, snowshoe hares don’t need simulations—they have very real predators to worry about. The animals are the main prey of Canada lynx, and the dance between them has been evolving for millions of years, says Rudy Boonstra, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, who has been studying both species for four decades.
Both species go through a 10-year cycle during which each species’ population fluctuates. When the hare population is high, lynx have a lot to eat and their population goes up as well.
But as the hare population declines the hares are not just being killed by lynx, they’re being stressed by being pursued, even if they escape. These hares produce fewer offspring and their offspring produce fewer offspring, until there are so few hares the lynx begin to starve and their population plummets as well.
Boonstra and colleagues showed that when lynx numbers were high and hares were in decline, levels of cortisol in snowshoe hare blood spiked. This stress takes a toll on female hares’ physical condition, which leads to weaker offspring.
This decade-long prey-predator cycle is a truly wild phenomenon, Boonstra notes, with no human creating the stress.
That’s partly why, like Heppell, Boonstra also doesn’t think human and wild animal stress responses can be compared.
“Their environment has been the same or similar for many, many generations, and ours changes all the time, every day.”

Experimental Pill Shows Promise Against Leukemia in Early Trial
In a study out this week, scientists describe a novel experimental pill that may be able to help patients with a difficult-to-treat form of leukemia. Nearly half of patients in the Phase I trial responded to the treatment, called revumenib, while about a third experienced a complete remission of their cancer. More research will be needed to confirm its effectiveness, however.
Revumenib is being developed by the company Syndax. It’s meant to work by inhibiting a protein called menin, which seems to play an important role in certain forms of leukemia. These cancers are characterized by carrying a NPM1 gene mutation or a rearrangement of another gene, called KMT2A. These aberrations are commonly found in both pediatric and adult cases of leukemia and are often very hard to treat. According to research cited by the scientists, for instance, the five-year survival rate for KMT2A-related leukemia is less than 25%.
On Thursday, these researchers published results from the first human trial of revumenib in the journal Nature. The trial enrolled 68 patients with relapsed or refractory acute leukemia that had failed to respond to previous treatments. Most of these patients had NPM1/KMT2A-related cancer.
Phase I trials are designed to test the safety and optimal dose of an experimental treatment. But to understand its potential efficacy, the team also looked at the outcomes of those with NPM1/KMT2A-related leukemia (60 in total). Out of these eligible patients, 53% showed some response to revumenib, and about 30% (18 patients) showed complete remission. Though nearly all of the patients experienced adverse effects, including potentially serious ones like an irregular heartbeat, none had to stop treatment as a result.
“For patients with acute leukemia who have undergone several previous treatments, this is a very encouraging result,” said study author Scott Armstrong, president of the Dana-Farber and Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, in a statement released by Dana-Farber.
G/O Media may get a commission
Phase I trials are only the start of clinical development, and many drugs that show encouraging results early on fail to fulfill that promise in larger trials. And even if revumenib does prove to be largely effective against these cancers, it may not be long-lasting for some. In a second study looking at the trial data, also released this week in Nature, the researchers found that some patients’ cancers adapted to the treatment and developed resistance to it.
These findings are both good and bad news, the authors say. It’s good, since it shows these cancers truly rely on menin to fuel their growth and likewise that drugs capable of disturbing how the protein is used by these cancers can neuter them. At the same time, it also likely means that other strategies will be needed to delay or prevent resistance against these drugs. That could include treating people at an earlier stage of cancer or pairing revumenib with other types of drugs that attack these cancers from a different angle.
An expansion of the study is already underway, with full Phase I/II results expected later this year. Should things continue to go well, the company has said it may start to file for FDA approval as early as the end of 2023. If approved, revumenib would be the first menin inhibitor to treat cancer.
