The Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)
Tumblr media
The Exorcist II: The Heretic is a sight to behold. While most of its unintentionally funny moments won't stick with you the way "Oh hi Mark!" or "They're eating her! And then they're going to eat me! OH MY GOD!" did, I recommend it to those who like bad movies. This sequel makes so many mistakes so often you'll be constantly picking your jaw off the floor.
Set four years after the events of the previous movie, Father Philip Lamont (Regan MacNeil) is investigating the final exorcism performed by the late Father Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow). This brings him to a now sixteen-year-old Regan (Linda Blair) and the demon that possessed her.
It’s not that the plot of Exorcist II comes out of nowhere; it all “make sense”. It's that to the audience, nothing we see follows any logic. Regan is staying at a psychiatric institute that looks like a space station crossed with a beehive. To determine what happened to her, they’re using a device to plunge into her psyche that might as well be magic because, in this realm, it's thoroughly unbelievable any way you look at it. Then, it explains her demon's origin. Hallucinations, flashbacks, crazy costumes, swarms of locusts, battles in the subconscious, and technobabble all happily line up. Even if the best parts have been spoiled for you (Hint: It has to do with James Earl Jones’ part), you can’t be prepared.
I suppose that, in theory, and if you squint really hard, the premise is decent. It’s not simply a new family moving into the same house as Regan and her mom (not appearing in the film). With the church looking back at what happened and wondering if it was all really true, this is the next “logical” story. The execution is disastrous but at least you can “see” why the project was green-lit. Well, ok, not really. This one was made solely for the money.
There's no doubt of its origin as a cash-grab but the film doesn’t reveal itself as an abomination from the very start, which sort of plays in its favor as a bad movie. For maximum effect, watch the original film with your friends. Discuss why it’s so good. Talk about the performances, the special effects, the unconventional choices, and how frightening it is. Then, drop this bomb on them. It’s an assault so devastating, it’s delicious.
The Exorcist II: The Heretic has been called “one of the worst movies ever made” but it isn't. Everything it does poorly someone else has fumbled harder. It is a contender for "worst sequel ever made", however. It isn’t merely tonally and technically the antithesis of the first; The Exorcist II is an impenetrable brick wall of a story, a tale so baffling, so inept and so numbing it'll have you entranced. (On DVD, June 9, 2017)

Flora Ocean Parkin - Electric Dreams Golden Sea - glorious multitracked vocals
In her debut solo release, Flora Ocean Parkin transmits the ecstatic. Expanding their voice into a shimmering tapestry and wrapping the listener in its golden threads. Reaching for the outer limits of her range, they chart a trajectory through maternal desire, phantom forms and a sensory understanding of the self, in order to trace a path to reconciliation and transcendence. With a sound that nods to the otherworldly harmonies of the Bulgarian State Television Female Choir, the mutant aesthetics of Arca and the sonic world building of Lyra Pramuk, Flora manifests a palatial body of work that is intimately personal, rich and decadent. In doing so, they express the new materialist philosophy of Karan Barad through music, as if the atomic world itself were a cosmic choir to sing with. 'The music, and the life it distils, would not have been possible without the support of friends, family, and loved ones who've believed in me along the way. Special thanks to: Alex Keegan, Ayse Hassan, Ayla Octavia Keegan, El Hardwick, Orion Isaacs, Anouska Samms, Chris Penty, Mum, Dad, Chloë, Granny, Mary Goodhart, Tim Green, Kip Ives, Sorana Vieru, Bryony Phipps Wardle, Jamie Morell, Siân Williams, Nick Potter, Mena Shah, Mutualism. Thanks to Karen Barad for the words, worldings and wonder' - Flora Ocean Parkin 25% of label profits will be donated to genderedintelligence.co.uk

Two years later, the Barn Dinner Theatre franchise presented the play in its venues. De Niro toured with the play and received some of the earliest favorable notices of his career.
The Pineville Country Dinner Theatre was part of the Barn Dinner Theatre franchise and was one of the longest lasting theatres of its kind. Dinner theatres provided a meal and drinks along with the performance, and the actors in the play served as waitstaff for the meal. The concept was enormously popular in the 1960s, and De Niro, like many actors at the time, gained valuable experience in these productions.”

You probably have heard by now that DC has killed DC Zoom, DC Ink and Vertigo imprints to consolidate publishing and replace imprints with separate age categories - DC Young Adult and DC Middle Grade being apparently just name changes for Ink and Zoom respectively, with Black Label remaining as their adult-oriented line and DC Universe being the main line still.
Some of things it means:
NO BOOK IS BEING CANCELLED
All Sandman Universe titles will continue under DC Black Label line. The Dreaming, House of Whispers, Books of Magic and Lucifer will keep going, just not under Vertigo label.
Creator-owned titles will be assigned to specific age groups but will also continue.
DC ink and Zoom books that have already been solicited will be published, other titles have been restructured to specific age group.
DC Middle Grade will still publishBatman: Overdrive, Batman Tales: Once Upon a Crime, Diana: Princess of the Amazins and Green Lantern: Legacy in 2020 and will publish Superman Smashes the Klan in future
In fact, they have announced more titles for Middle-Grade books, including:
Anti/Hero – Written by Kate Karyus Quinn and Demitria Lunetta and illustrated by Maca Gil (April 2020)
Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld – Written by Shannon and Dean Hale
ArkhaManiacs – Written by Art Baltazar and Franco and illustrated by Art Baltazar (April 2020)
Batman and Robin…and Howard – Written and illustrated by Jeffrey Brown
DC Super Hero Girls: Powerless – Written by Amy Wolfram and illustrated by Agnes Garbowska (March 2020)
Green Arrow: Stranded – Written by Brendan Deneen and illustrated by Caleb Hosalla
Indestructibles Book 1—Written by Ridley Pearson
Lois Lane – Written by Grace Ellis and illustrated by Brittney Williams
Metropolis Grove – Written and illustrated by Drew Brockington
The Mystery of the Meanest Teacher: A Johnny Constantine Graphic Novel – Written by Ryan North and illustrated by Derek Charm
My Video Game Ate My Homework – Written and illustrated by Dustin Hansen (May 2020)
Primer – Written by Thomas Krajewski and Jennifer Muro and illustrated by Gretel Lusky
Super Sons Book 3: Escape to Landis – Written by Ridley Pearson and illustrated by Ile Gonzalez
Teen Titans Go! to Camp – Written by Sholly Fisch
Teen Titans Go! Roll with It – Written by Heather Nuhfer and P.C. Morrissey     -Zatanna & the House of Secrets – Written by Matthew Cody and illustrated by Yoshi Yoshitani (February 2020)
Future DC Young Adult titles include books announced for 2020 - Gotham High, The Oracle Code, Shadow of the Batgirl, Lost Carnival: a Dick Grayson Graphic Novel and Wonder Woman: Warbringer - as well as already announced Teen Titans: Beast Boy and Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed.
There is also a large number of NEW books in Young Adult line, including:
Catwoman: Soulstealer – Adapted by Louise Simonson from Sarah J. Maas’ DC Icon prose novel and illustrated by Samantha Dodge
Galaxy: The Prettiest Star – Written by Jadzia Axelrod and illustrated by Cait Zellers
Galaxy: The Prettiest Star – Written by Jadzia Axelrod and illustrated by Cait Zellers
House of El Book 1 – Written by Claudia Gray and illustrated by Eric Zawadzki
I Am Not Starfire—Written by Mariko Tamaki
Mister Miracle – Written by Varian Johnson
Nubia – Written by L.L. McKinney and illustrated by Robyn Smith
Swamp Thing – Written by Maggie Stiefvater and illustrated by Morgan Beem
Victor & Nora: A Mr. Freeze Story – Written by Lauren Myracle and illustrated by Isaac Goodhart
Whistle – Written by E. Lockhart and illustrated by Manuel Preitano
You Brought Me the Ocean – Written by Alex Sanchez and illustrated by Julie Maroh
Zatanna: The Jewel of Gravesend – Written by Alys Arden and illustrated by Jacquelin De Leon
Now, another matter entirely is what it means for Vertigo books. Black Label is a good initiative even if so far it has produced BatPenis and Republican Superman. However, the line was advertised as “ biggest creators and biggest characters” for adult-oriented stories. This is not what Vertigo was. Vertigo was always a publisher who was not afraid of taking risks and pushing the envelope, it changed comics in ways we still feel and changed them for the better. Books like Sandman, Hellblazer, Lucifer, Transmetropolitan, Fables, Shade the Changing Man are among the greatest titles of American comics and left a huge mark on the millions of fans and creators. Black Label is right now criticized for being too Batman-centric for its own good.
It is an end of an era but not one we didn’t see coming. The writing was on the wall since DC fired Karen Beger and took classic Vertigo characters like John Constantine and Swamp Thing and forced them back into the main DC line as a part of New 52. Vertigo never recovered from that hit. Ironically I suspect now Young Animal books will fall under Black Label. Including Doom Patrol, one of titles DC took away from Vertigo in the first place.

Blu-ray Review: Exorcist II: The Heretic
Tumblr media
There is perhaps no greater example of a sequel's futile task to live up to a classic film than Exorcist II: The Heretic. Beyond being one of the highest grossing films of all time, 1973's The Exorcist is widely considered by an entire generation to be the scariest movie ever made. No possible follow-up could live up to those standards, but surely they could have done something better than Exorcist II: The Heretic.
It's not as if the film was rushed to capitalize on the success of the original; Exorcist II wasn't released until 1977. Neither director William Friedkin nor William Peter Blatty had interest in returning, so John Boorman (Deliverance, Excalibur) stepped into the director's chair, working from a script by William Goodhart (Cloud Dancer). Audiences did not respond kindly to their efforts, reportedly inciting riots during the film's opening weekend.
Tumblr media
Set four years after the events of The Exorcist, Linda Blair returns to star as Regan MacNeil. Now 16 years old and living in New York City, she's ostensibly recovered from her demonic possession, which left Father Merrin (Max von Sydow, Minority Report) dead. The Vatican assigns one of Merrin's disciples, Father Philip Lamont (Richard Burton, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Led by her psychologist, Dr. Gene Tuskin (Louise Fletcher, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), Regan undergoes an experimental, hypnotic therapy treatment. By linking together with a device known as the synchronizer, Regan is able to coordinate her brainwaves with another person in order to confront her repressed trauma. After debating the merits of science vs. religion, Lamont utilizes the synchronizer to further his investigation - but he doesn’t like what he sees.
Tumblr media
The synchronizer is an interesting plot device in terms of both concept and execution, but it peaks early, leaving a tedious film that follows. Exorcist II is a more philosophical, theological, and procedural effort than its predecessor. The precious little time that's left for horror is far too bogged down by convoluted plot to be remotely scary. The few horror elements that squeeze through largely rest on the laurels of the first film.
Although the material lacks the sympathy for and repulsion of Regan's character, Blair delivers a fine enough performance, showing her growth and maturity since The Exorcist. The bulk of the film rests on Burton's shoulders, who carries the plodding material to the best of his abilities. Von Sydow is wasted on newly-filmed flashbacks. (Father Karras goes unmentioned.) Regan's mother is written out of the story, but Kitty Winn reprises her role as Sharon to serve as her caretaker. James Earl Jones (Star Wars) and Ned Beatty (Deliverance) appear in offbeat supporting roles. Paul Henreid (Victor Laszlo, Casablanca) has a small part as a bishop.
Tumblr media
The great Dick Smith returned to handle the special makeup effects, but Blair allegedly refused to don the possession makeup this time around, so his work feels cheap on a different face. The film's strongest aspect is its score, composed and conducted by Ennio Morricone (The Thing, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly). While it's impossible to top Mike Oldfield's otherworldly “Tubular Bells," which became the theme of The Exorcist, Morricone crafted a soundtrack that's quite eerie in its own right.
Scream Factory's two-disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray release of Exorcist II: The Heretic includes two versions of the film: the original 118-minute theatrical cut and a 102-minute cut that was released internationally after the disastrous reaction to the film’s initial cut. While the truncated version helps the pacing, it is perhaps even more confusing and remains a chore to get through. Both versions have been scanned in 2K from original film elements, so they look excellent.
Tumblr media
While a new audio commentary on the longer cut from Boorman is a huge score, those hoping for insight into the doomed production will be disappointed. With so many long stretches of silence, he would have been better suited for an interview. When he speaks, Boorman doesn't seem displeased with the final product; he only concedes that he had "perhaps too many ideas." The track is not without its interesting anecdotes, however; like how he was offered to direct The Exorcist but found the script "abhorrent." The sequel appealed to him because, unlike the original, it showed the good side of good vs. evil. He also cites this as being the reason that audiences rejected the film.
A new, 19-minute interview with Blair is far more insightful, who has spoken ad nauseam about the original but rarely about the sequel. She openly admits that the original script was well-written but is not what they shot, as it was reworked several times throughout production. She also divulges that Burton had to use cue cards. Editor Tom Priestley (Deliverance, 1984) sits down for a brief interview as well.
Tumblr media
For even more details on the production, there are new audio commentaries with special project consultant Scott Bosco (on the longer cut), who clarifies all of the jumbled plot points, and Mike White of The Projection Booth blog (on the shorter cut). Both tracks are packed with information and analysis, yet there’s not too much overlap. Extras are rounded out by theatrical and teaser trailers along with still galleries focusing on stills, behind-the-scenes photos, deleted scene images, and posters and lobby cards.
Exorcist II: The Heretic is not quite as bad as its reputation may suggest, though it certainly fails to find its way out of the enormous shadow left by its predecessor. The new insight into the cast and crew’s thought process gleaned from Scream Factory's Collector's Edition Blu-ray, coupled with pristine, high-definition transfer, shines a new light on the much-maligned production.
Exorcist II: The Heretic is available now on Blu-ray via Scream Factory.

Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)
“Barring a lengthy discussion on the two different versions of the prequel film, The Exorcist Series, in my mind, is comprised of 3 films: The Exorcist (1973), The Ninth Configuration (1980) and The Exorcist III (1990 more recently the directors “Legion” cut specifically). It's one of many unofficial film groupings that I prefer to the official canon but also the most valid, as not only does it carry common actors, characters, and themes but the original source author, William Peter Blatty, was instrumental in the production of all three films as well. They fit together adequately to create a grim epic on the topic of human suffering, the existence of “Good” or “Evil” and religious guilt. As far as I'm concerned, the three films, while not perfect, make one complex but complete thought, with no further need for any of the 3 other filmed works in the official series. When I am in the Exorcising mood and make the plunge into the long dark journey made up by those three preachy ass chapters, I like to pretend the others don't even exist (except possibly one prequel). A Linda Blair type of night, however, is a whole fucking different beast altogether. Outside of the original Exorcist, the rest of her cult classics are far less cerebral than the depressing combo of The 9th Configuration, and Legion. The official Exorcist sequel, for which she returned in 1977, is probably the furthest you can get from the spirit of this series and has even been called “one of the worst films ever made”. I don't know about that extreme wording, because while it really has no place among those more thoughtful works, on certain nights, (let's say between flicks like The Chilling and Grotesque), Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), feels just right and makes for some more than watchable supernatural trash.” - RevTerry
