Tod almost flinched at his former friend’s bitter, frustrated words, but he suppressed the motion. He did lower his head, though, out of submission and, to a lesser degree, fear.

He wasn’t all that scared because he truthfully didn’t think Copper would harm him. He wasn’t sure he had it in him.

“Yeah… yeah, Copper,” the fox whispered, nodding quickly with wide eyes.

She would have done anything to not be in a restaurant where she couldn’t just be with Finn. “You really mean that, don’t you?” She could swear there were moments in her life that seemed pivotal, that seemed like time stood still for longer for her to take in. “Did you really think I didn’t notice you?” She shook her head knowing he would probably never realized that they were equally infatuated and in love with one another. There were times when all Maddy could do was look away to keep herself from wanting too much. “There’s a reason why I’ve never been able to find someone that makes me feel the way you do.” The key word being in the last word-- the lack of a past tense lingering in her words.

Puck was doing some last minute grocery shopping for Christmas eve. She'd celebrate it with her father this year. He worked long shifts while being the wealthiest family's personal bodyguard. He didn’t like thinking about that. Yeah, sure, he’d saved Copper and Mr. Slade, but it had taken a toll on Tod’s body. He wasn’t as sturdy and strong as Copper was, but he’d done all he could.

It had been enough, because his friend was still alive.

Tod chuckled lightly, trying to lighten the mood. “Ol’ Chief… he’ll never see eye-to-eye with us foxes, will he? That’s alright- I’ve got no quarrel with ‘im.”
