PJO 1x01 and 1x02 thoughts

The first chapter monologue in the perfect way to open the show and establish Percy's voice from the beginning. Walker immediately nailed both Percy's sarcasm, impertinence, and anger, which is so so so critical for anchoring the show.

direction in the first episode, especially with the action scenes, was a little lacking. percy killing mrs. dodds was weirdly anti-climatic. the car chase could've been a bit more exciting and the minotaur was okay

I LOVE YOU SALLY JACKSON, BEST MOM ON THE PLANET.

I have seen some posts about Gabe being defanged but he's clearly still an abusive waste of space. The dude is answering her phone, unemployed, gambling away her money, it's red flag city up in here. Curious how they're going to show him in later episodes and what they'll do with the Medusa plotline.

Grover is one of those characters that I have very little emotional attachment to. He's just sort of... there in the books for me. But Aryan's a little cutie and he does a great job of acting like he's just a little bit older/mature than Percy. Loved his little back and forth with Sally in the cabin. Deeply underutilized in the second episode, but obvs he'll get more time later on.

I adore the set design for camp, especially the Big House and all the stained glass motifs. But WTF is up with all the skeletons in Cabin 3? get a better interior designer poseidon you fucking weirdo

Jason Mantzoukas' energy for Mr. D was perfect, no notes. Did love his interactions with Percy and Grover.

Chiron is... there?

Clarisse is perfectly cast. Luke is underwhelming so far, but he really hasn't gotten to do anything real meaty yet.

I'm ready to see more of Annabeth in future episodes because she really didn't do much more than lurk and be cryptic since they gave her role as guide to camp to Luke. (I am not a fan of this decision, but whatever, gotta set Luke up for ~ultimate betrayal)

Her exasperated shove of Percy into the lake was A+ but why was the trident so damn big lmao

Loved loved loved Percy's burning anger at his dad and wanting to make him show up. Excellent characterization

curious as to why the episodes are limited to 45 minutes because i think another 5-10 minutes on the runtime would've helped with some of the pacing issues. but the show's clearly cut with commercial breaks in mind so i'm guessing this is eventually going to air on the Disney Channel or ABC.

Cho Chang for the random character ask: 4, 9, 12, 27, 43

cho! this was actually so fun to think about. cho is an underrated character and a boss bitch and i for one have relished the opportunity to think more deeply about her, so cheers for that anon! (i'm merging the other ask i got about cho with this one for a bumper cho post)

1. Canon I outright reject

i do not tend to outright reject canon because i am a boring yawn canon compliant girlie but i will say i find it weird to think that cho would be randomly checking/carrying her DA coin on the night that harry just happens to arrive back at hogwarts in DH. it’s not even for plot it’s just for the ensemble vibes. pointless cameo sorry! the whole point of failed high school romances is to never resolve them and just memory block them out for all eternity until you bump into them in the veg section at the big supermarket when you go home for christmas and make awkward small talk then see them again at the checkouts and want to die

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on

part of the reason cho was so (understandably) distraught after cedric's death was because of a dynamic in their relationship of cho revering/idolising cedric that only deepened after his death as he became somewhat canonised in popular memory. when they got together, cedric was a seventh year and cho was a fifth year. often when you're 15/16 you definitely look at 17-18 year olds like they're the coolest people on the planet and you're lucky to be in their orbit basking in their great worldly wise glory (lol). and while i’m not doing up age-gap-is-problematic-discourse i am saying that if you're in the last year of school and your mate starts going out with someone two years below who is doing their GCSEs or whatever you do a) obviously take the piss out of them but more importantly b) tend to see a pretty big gap in maturity and life experience that often adds a weird power differential in the relationship. that's not to say that cho didn't really miss cedric's company, but also that the grief was made worse by the fact that she likely saw him as a saint-like figure she was in awe of, a view that only received mass endorsement after dumbledore's eulogy of cedric, so she's not even really able to mourn a real person, but just the idea of someone purely heroic and good who she will never be able to replicate again

actually huge props for cho for joining a resistance fight club with no parental support for anti-ministry action. because in canon you have the weasleys whose parents are so politically involved, and whose sense of political right and wrong is (bar percy) so instinctual because it's how they were raised, it can be easy to overlook how significant it is when other characters who don't come from that family background/political lineage get involved in risky acts of open rebellion. like yes her defence of marietta is misguided, but cho is a boss bitch who lets her grief be fuel for a good fightback and i for one applaud it

8. Unpopular opinion about them

ok this is going to sound like me doing up pure ginny defender but for all ginny gets slated for having many a jealous moment (including with cho in DH) i do think it is Interesting that people overlook how insanely jealous cho is of hermione lol. i do like that element of cho's character - or rather, think it lets her be well-rounded and interesting, giving an insight into how the trio are perceived by other members of the student body, but also allows cho have this messy petty teenage side to her (people often tend to write her in fic as this very worldly mature grieving widow figure, instead of like, a girl going thru it and wildly acting out emotionally and developing a whole host of insecure abandonment issues that are mostly to do with her grief). but i love how she like sees red and goes full how many girls are you meeting after me!!! alexa play bust your windows!!! i am going to storm out and YOU are going to pay for these coffees!!! so yeah, my unpopular opinion is cho is petty and messy and obviously harry fucks up more but she does kind of act up and you know what, that's fine! she's still worthy of the world! (you know all i do is ride on my let girls giggle and be messy crusade)

ohhh man i am going to have to pass on this because i literally cannot name any smells. she's too prestige and gorgeous to not smell lovely though!

28. How they feel about insert character of your choice from the same fandom

i am kind of obsessed with a cho vs ginny bitter rivalry that doesn't actually have all that much to do with harry lol. cho is two school years older than ginny (given ginny is an end-of-august birthday baby, cho fully could be three years older than her, given hermione is two calendar years older than ginny and is only in the year above). so ginny is a little pipsqueak irrelevance to cho, whereas i expect cho lives in ginny's head rent-free while she's still in the throes of her deep unrequited crush on harry. then ginny goes out with michael, cho's teammate, and is in the DA, so probably is around a lot more, maybe they're semi-friendly, all going fine - until ginny pops up for the quiddich final in ootp and publicly demolishes cho on the quidditch pitch. can you imagine being a (almost or actual) seventeen year old getting the snitch snatched from under your nose by gryffindor's fourteen year old second-rate substitute seeker (especially after a year of playing badly?) i'd be fuming. no wonder cho cries and chucks her broom on the ground. so then ginny chucks michael for being a 'sore loser' (i think this must have also been a bit connected to cho, if all ravenclaw are having a great big public sulk lol), and then michael immediately gets with cho (canon implies that evening lmao). even if ginny didn't care about michael all that much, there is something pretty galling about your ex moving on to your sporting rival an hour after you break up lmao, and something very messy from cho to try and get back at the girl who just beat you by immediately hooking up with her ex lol. you can just imagine michael and cho bitterly slagging off ginny in between snogs at that post-match commiseration party. and then the following year, when ginny beats cho again, in a match cho 100% viewed as a re-match and a chance to finally best the person who humiliated her... i'm just saying, those two hate each other (at least as teenagers) and it doesn't even really involve harry lol. and i for one love it!

43. 3 favorite foods and 3 they despise

on percy shelley & human connection & coping through art

to set the mood of this post i must say i'm writing it really quickly on my phone over a bowl of pasta with bread & broccoli & some orange flavored sparkling water & im still dressed in my outdoor wintery clothes (all black, knee boots, wool, silver chains & rings, although i mostly prefer gold jewelry).

so anyway today i've been kind of sad over ppl not replying to my texts & my usual reaction is to say "ok, guess i'll kms, wah wah, cry cry" but this sort of passively cynical joking schtick has gotten old & i would rather occupy myself some other way instead of moping about failed connections or the difficulty of initiating contact with anyone or the struggles of modern socialization as a whole.

instead, i will read the works of percy shelley tonight, and think about how he struggled with all of this over 200 yrs ago. of how hard he struggled to make leigh hunt and lord byron collaborate with him on their journal the liberal, and how he struggled all his life to build a positive community even in spite of years of bullying, ostracization, and family strife - he often felt like giving up, and like human connection was impossible, but he never gave in to apathy and instead he continuously curated his ideal life by seeking out other like-minded people, even when he occasionally embarrassed himself in public or when others were decidely averse to him or lukewarm in their reception. john keats didn't entirely take to him when they met and some of keats' friends straight-up disliked percy for being weird, but percy (though scarcely knowing him) loved keats as a brother-poet nonetheless, was generous to him, wrote one of his masterpieces in his favor, and died with a copy of his poems in his pocket.

percy always reached out to others and was a loyal friend even when others disrespected him or ignored him or just simply didnt love him as much as he did them. his letters to lord byron show how reverent he was to his friend, and how his affection was never returned in quite the same gusto, but, while still trying to keep his self-respect, percy quelled his frustrations and continued his correspondence with byron regardless. percy acted as the mediator between byron and claire even when his stress was so high it weighed heavily on his health. he actively tried to choose to be positive even when the people around him were negative or miserable. like most writers back then, he sent his writing to his idols, and sought mentorship from people he admired, like william godwin and leigh hunt, and he continued to respect them even when they took advantage of him financially (moreso in godwin's case).

anyway what i mean to say is that whenever im feeling lonely or rejected or alienated or socially stupid or am just second-guessing my role in society or whatever whatever whatever, i cling to creativity/art/literature/etc. even harder than i regularly do, because thats what it exists for.

i knew a therapist (not one i saw as a patient, but someone i knew through mutual interests in media/the arts) who said that a certain musical performance we both loved probably saved way more lives than any single therapist ever has. - the performance in question was david bowie's tokyo 1990 live recording of rock n roll suicide, an anti-suicide song (its available on youtube, go watch it lol, he performs it with so much conviction).

any way even though at the end of his life shelley sometimes felt like he was failing to achieve his dream of building a utopian art commune - he actually did succeed in introducing several people to each other in ways that changed peoples lives. his friends jane williams and thomas jefferson hogg got married only through his mutual friendship. whole literary societies have been started in his honor - to this day there are conferences & whatnot that meet annually - his life & writing continues to inspire people and bring them comfort - & he would be extremely proud of that - any artist would. the main goal of any famous dead writer is basically to become the imaginary friend of their future readers & he accomplished that - even though all the time he was wracked with doubt/depression/suicidality/illness/chronic pain, etc. - as a political/philosophical radical, he realized that having hope is one of the most influential & radical things one can do - & i'm glad that, even though this is a person who died over 200 yrs ago, there is at least one person who really resonates with me - even though we're from different centuries, different continents, different sexes, etc. - it's helpful to have positive influences to look up to, especially when they've also struggled in similar ways as you. and although shelley was pretty privileged (rich englishman) he really did struggle a lot mentally & physically - his life was a chaotic mess - and he wasn't perfect at all - but i think he's still inspirational for my previously mentioned reasons - his ceaseless hope. the last poem he was working on was titled the triumph of life, even though he wrote it during a deep depression. the last poem he published in his lifetime was hellas, which he hoped would raise money for the cause of greek war of independence. from the poem:

"Life may change, but it may fly not;

Hope may vanish, but can die not;

Truth be veiled, but still it burneth;

Love repulsed, — but it returneth!"

Leo Valdez in Ceaseless Eve: Let's Discuss

⚠️ The following contains spoilers for any & all of Ceaseless Eve ⚠️

How can I begin to talk about my boy??

To start, I should probably give some context or lore about me:

I started reading the books when I was nine. I was sick in bed one day, and my dad wanted to read me something to make me feel better. "It's just like Harry Potter!" he'd said, holding up a copy of The Lightening Theif. (My ill feelings towards the wizard books now, I had inhaled the series when I was eight and read nothing else. Thank goodness I expanded my horizons, right?).

So, he started to read Percy Jackson while I laid in bed...

And I hated it, lol.

What can I say? I was a brat. Or maybe I just wanted to be left alone with my stomachahce or fever or whatever I was sick with. So, one chapter in, my dad gave up and left me alone.

When I felt better, I picked the book back up...and I went through the entire first series in a week. Even now, my dad jokes that I just had a problem with him reading them, not the book itself. (And yes, we watched the show together, he enjoyed it--I'm still badgering him to read the books himself though...maybe I should read it to him when he gets sick...)

So, I got into pjo. The details are a little fuzzy on when exactly I read the sequel series, though I believe it was sometime in middle school. All I know was that the moment I first read about Leo...I had the biggest fictional crush on him, lmao. I remember a time in 2016 where 13 year old me would watch Viria's "How Far We've Come" video and I'd write Leo x readers in the notes app of my iPod touch (unfortunately, those fics have all been deleted, otherwise I would not hesitate to share that horror with the world. But rest assured, the reader was very much Not Like Other Girls lol).

I'm not sure when exactly valdangelo first became an interest to me or where I found it, but I remember reading the books and feeling like we were robbed of those two interacting. They were always something in the back of my mind, though I was always working on other projects and had no idea where to start in the event that I did write something for them.

Until the hype for the show was starting, and I thought that it would be cool to explore a bit of an AU quest between Leo, Nico, and Piper. I thought about the one-off line about how a "confused pizza guy" had found his way to Camp Half-Blood once and ran with that. Also, ever since I started working, I give my favorite character my job if applicable. At the time of writing, I was a food delievery person, so that's why I went with that. The fic was really a character study of Leo more than anything, so I really appreciate all of the people saying I got Leo's voice right :')

So, there are a couple big changes that were made with Leo's character in the ceaselessverse that differentiate the character from canon:

1.) Leo doesn't make mean jokes about his questmates.

This is a change that I actually regret making, and I might toy with a sort of compromise in the sequel. At first, people who were anti-leo made comments on how rude he could be, and I saw that as something that needed to be "fixed" in CE.

However, now that I think about it as a neurodivergent person...I can't help but wonder if that is connected to him being neurodivergent? Like with me, especially as a teen, I was anxious in social situations and often didn't know what to say, so I would make jokes, and a lot of them didn't land. Sure, I shouldn't have made those jokes, and Leo shouldn't have made the jokes he did, but the neurodivergent nature of it all as well as him being an awkward teen sort of explains that, it doesn't excuse it. I think the rise of purity culture and the lack of desire for nuanced characters has (pardon my lack of professionalism) fucked up the vibe. Like a lot. I think it's fine (great, even!) for a character you like to have flaws, especially if they stem from an aspect that makes them more relatable. If you want neurodivergent characters but hate them for exhibiting traits that are frowned upon, well...you might just want neurotypical characters with quirks and labels.

2.) Leo isn't a "ladies man"

I don't regret this change at all. That shit was weird, Richard.

That being said, I think it was fine to have a character who has romance on the brain and is flirtatous. Hell, it's even fine to have a character that's weird towards women and tries to "jokingly" sneak a peak at a female character changing (sorry if you were trying to repress page 114 of mark of athena)--that's just fiction, but you can't expect us to root for that character (especially in their goal of getting a girlfriend).

So, while Leo is observant of the girls around him and thinks they're cute, I think this was a change that was adjusted to age better, yk?

3.) Leo was (accidentally) responsible for his mother's death (sorry, Esperanza)

This was the first change made to accomodate the lack of Gaea.

Of course, you'll notice how most all of the character's (outside of those from the og series) backstories were altered to accomodate that, but this was something I was particularly interested in exploring. I'm not going to pretend to be a better writer than our buddy Richard (though I think some of his decisions were really weird...and he'd probably think the same thing about me, tbh), but I think it was a bit of a copout to have Leo think he killed his mom only for it to be Gaea's fault, so he's, like, "redeemed". I wanted to explore a route where Leo was responsible, even by accident, and what that would mean for his greif and healing process. I hope that was explored thoughtfully to you guys in CE.

4.) Leo was a bully to escape bullying

This one was a little controversial lol, but I think it's more interesting.

I can see where it'd make sense in canon to have Leo use his comedy to escape bullying--he does a bit of the same thing in the ceaselessverse, though I believe it works too well. Leo is welcomed into becoming almost like friends with his bullies, though there is clearly a power dynamic at work. I have had "friendships" like this in middle/high school, and I thought it would be interesting to show how lonliness can lead you to make stupid decisions in order to feel, at least a little bit, like you belong somewhere.

This is, of course, stopped as Leo became closer with his sister, Sarah. He finds that caring for someone outside of his own survival starts to make him feel like a person again, and he wants to become better for her sake. It's really sweet to me and highlights yet another great type of platonic relationship dynamic to be explored, but more on Sarah later.

I could talk about Leo's character all day--about how his arc of controlling his abilities instead of fearing them mirrors Piper's, about how his sexuality is (and probably will) never be stated directly in the text, so it's up to reader interpretation (he's vaguely bi but mostly queer To Me but also idc). If you ever wanna hear more of my thoughts on him with any specifics, feel free to send an ask! Or Whatever !

A favorite tool in Leo's toolbelt: The Dormio

Leo has a lot of cool little knick-knacks, some canon and some not. His wristwatch with the hidden message was a strong contender, but ultimately the Dormio wins for sure. What can I say? I would love to see dreams--maybe not my own (Hypnos plagues me with stress dreams :') ), but other people's.

The Dormio was originally called the DreamViewer, which was kind of a placeholder name because, frankly, it's dumb as shit. I have to credit @heavens-vault for coming up with the new name, thank you <3 The name is based on a dream interfacing system by MIT.

(Did some of the editing get lost in the sauce, and the device is still called the DreamViewer sometimes? Maybe. No further questions without my lawyer lol. I plan on doing a mass edit some time in the future. Save me mass edit, mass edit save me, etc)

All that to say, the Dormio is not a one-off. We'll just have to wait and see what role it plays in Ivory Rain...

Bonus Character!

Sarah McAllen: Let's Discuss

So, my first pjo OC...

Sarah is first foreshadowed in chapter five, when Leo and Piper are discussing the quest at Nico's cabin door:

"Us?" now it was Piper's turn to look confused. "You mean...you understood that line in the prophecy, the 'daughter of doves' thing?"

"Sure I did!" Leo replied, feeling his heart skip a beat, his smile a tad nervous. "There's more to me than good looks, Beauty Queen." Hopefully, that settled Piper for now. Sure, that orientation video was not very informative, but he didn't have to explain to everyone why he knew these things about Greek mythology.

After reading through chapter nine, it should become clear that Leo has a little bit of background knowledge on Greek Mythology due to Sarah's loud interest in Mythomagic. Although their background has been covered in the text, I thought I'd mention a couple things about her.

I realized kinda late in her development that I actually did the same thing in an older longfic for a different fandom I wrote when I was 15--giving the main character a younger sister, motivating him to be better and take care of her. I'm not sure if there's any psychology behind me wanting to write my faves as older brothers, but it's interesting!

I did give Sarah a couple things in common with me, even if she's not a self-insert. She's a writer, one of the reasons she falls into the Apollo cabin. She also has what Nico describes in chapter 18 as a "medical brace" on her knee. This will be further addressed in the sequel, but I gave her the same disablity that I have with my knee. I don't want to delve too deep into the medicality (medicality?) of it all just for my comfort, but I wanted to show a chracter that has a disability but can also be a hero, like they did in the tv show. I hope you guys read that and it made you happy :-)

I will say that Sarah is not going to be too much of a major player in the sequel, I don't want to put my OCs too much into the spotlight when I already have a lot of canon characters I want to work with. Still, she will always be really important to Leo, and their relationship will always be really important to me.

Also! To tell you a secret...she will not be the only OC in the ceaselessverse, but I guess you will have to wait and see what I mean in Ivory Rain...

lol some people need to look outside their fandom circles. there was a recent ask referencing how anti's are okay with some ships where the characters are underage but not others, and the example used was Percy Jackson/Annabeth Chase. I've been in that fandom nearly constantly since 2006. There are unhinged ships and a lot of people ship a fuckton of things. There are anti's and there's a slew of people who are only into the "canon" ships or whatever, but to say all people who ship Percabeth attack others is demonstrably bullshit for a large portion of the fandom. Not all, but a lot of it. I ship it and so does the group I talk to. And I also ship Percy/Kronos and no one bats an eye.

One of my favorite authors in the fandom writes a lot of Percy/Annabeth but also writes ships with major age differences, power dynamics, uses tags and warnings antis hate for, off the top of my head, at least 4 different ships. From what I can see on their AO3 and tumblr, no anti had come near them, and they write fics that consistently get engagement and are discussed in multiple servers I'm in. Even ones that are more anti leaning in general, and a small Percabeth server. There are people who only write and interact with Percy/Annabeth, but I see so many people in servers and on AO3 who talk about them and also other ships. In 17 years in the fandom, it's had it's periods of hell (a lot of people got particularly furious at one MLM ship and an artist), but having also been in Star Wars since 1999... it's a fandom with overall a lot of multi shippers and a lot of people who just stay in their lane. The anti's are just loud when you encounter them. The people I've seen who get shit are the ones who don't mind their own damn business.

Maybe I have the right people blocked, or maybe I'm too old to interact with thew bullshit anymore. There are anti's in the Percy Jackson fandom like there are any. I was on PJO tiktok for a hot minutes and they're particularly terrible there. But lol as far as fandom goes, it's a pretty good one at staying in their lane. To be blunt the worst anti's I've seen are people who are against the popularity of Percabeth and go out of their way to tag it and make posts about how it's abusive and Annabeth is the worst character in the series because she.... judo flipped Percy that one time.

Basically I have a lot of thoughts on this having been steadily in the fandom for nearing 20 years. I'm considering going back to university and focusing on fandom, and highly considering using PJO and some of the things I've mentioned above as a jumping off point.

I've been meaning to write this since @luckthebard 's post about the fandom's treatment of the whole Ludinus situation but I'm only getting to it now, and didn't want to hijack the og post. The basic point of this is that it made me realize that this is basically the same discourse as "Luke was right" in Percy Jackson.

You have the gods, of Exandria or Olympus, who are somewhat questionable in world.

You have a guy, Ludinus or Luke, that feels like he's been wronged by the gods, some could say that this feeling is accurate, some would disagree (I believe that's a interesting in-game convo, don't know how relevent it is outside of it).

This guy then wants to get rid of the gods, to set up a new world order, and to do so, he makes an alliance with an older being, that existed prior to the gods (Predathos or Chronos).

This older being wants to kill the gods for his own interests and is using the guy as a means to an end, while the guy believes he's bringing forth lasting change.

Both fandoms ask at some point, "is the guy right ?". Because the guys criticizes an imperfect system, but with violent and unfit means.

That's about all I have to say about pjo, I just wanted to point out the parallel.

To the second part of this post.

I think the only thing with which I disagree from the og post is the seemingly firm belief that the criticism of the gods by the fandom is unfounded.

I'll add that the comparison to Evangelical American Christianity isn't quite relevant to me, or at least misses the point of some of the criticism. This specific way to practice Christianity and Christianity in general is not inherently bad or evil or wrong, nothing is. Did they do horrible things in the past ? damn right. Should they make amends ? damn right. Are they still today being used as a symbol and a way to justify horrible things ? right again.

But as true as all of this is, I think it is just skirting what is actually criticized about religion in general here or in extreme atheist circles. I'll quote Le Guin here "religion, yes, clergy, no.". The problem is not the religion in and of itself, it never is. The problem is the institution it creates and how this institution is then used as a tool of oppression. And absolutely every religion can fall victim to this, none is exempt.

That is true of real life religion, and our fake fantasy religions. The Dwendalian Empire forces strong restriction on worship, and shockingly, they're (it's in the name) a whole ass empire, whose control of the religion practiced by its people allows it to control its general array of thought. One could argue that the Kryn Dynasty also uses the worship of the Luxon as a tool of control of their elites and population, but let's keep that for another day.

I also think the hole in the og post's argumentation is saying that we have had good interactions with the gods before, and following a few paragraphs later with "our personal relationships with individual gods and feelings about them are irrelevant actually".

And yeah, we've seen great interactions with the gods, but the gods are not what are criticized in anti-religion movements, again, the problem is in the institutionalization of it.

I'll end this by saying that I do understand that the problem pointed out in the og post was the support given to Ludinus. Regarding this, I definitely agree with Luck. Even if I think there is criticism to be made about organized religion in whatever form, that's really not what Ludinus is doing. His problem seems to be the gods themselves and not the institution of them, which means I believe he's missing the point as well.

There is of course, the question of violence as a means to an end, and if you're interested by this as a philosophical debate, I'll advise reading a bit about utilitarianism in general and some famous books and plays (The Just Assassins, by Albert Camus ; Ivan Karamazov's speech to his brother Aliocha in Dosyoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov ; really basic trolley problem stuff ; and Camus wrote a lot about the use of violent means in war in various texts, including Resistance, Rebellion, and Death). But we're in a fantasy world, and a D&D game, and they kill a bunch of people and creatures all the time, so the moral aspect of violence or non-violence is also not the same as in real life.

I believe violence is at times necessary for change, and it is always necessary to overthrow an oppression which uses violence first (for more about this, I would advise reading Frantz Fanon and Paulo Freire).

However, Ludinus is not thriving to overthrow this oppression in its institutional form, but wishes only to suppress the people currently in power, without changing the minds of the people or the way they think power, which in turn will keep the oppression alive (which is why revolutionary movements have to come from the people and not the elite).

TL;DR: LUDINUS IN CR IS BASICALLY LUKE IN PJO, AND EVEN IF LUDINUS IS 100% WRONG, THERE ALWAYS IS A CRITICISM TO BE MADE AGAINST ORGANIZED RELIGION SEEING AS IT IS OFTEN USED AS A TOOL OF OPPRESSION.

Three ships: 1 - (no particular order)

Aragorn x Arwen (LOTR) - How could one not? I know they aren't really in the books and it's only the appendices but just the concept of them is just adorable? All canon lotr book ships are just really beautiful. I know people have mixed feelings about PJ's movies with her but as much as I love the books, I think he did some good stuff with the movies too. (although the hobbit was wack)

2. Eugene x Rapunzel (Tangled) - not really a disney person per say but this one just is really, really cute? And I love them? Especially if ya'll watch the tv show too cause he's just really in love and supportive and she just loves him too and it's really sweet? Idk man, they're just adorable?

3. Rick x Evy (the Mummy 1999) - look, I am a huge sucker for married couple that stays married and stays in love okay? The Mummy is nostalgic for me and it's simple. It's kinda cheesy but I like that. Doesn't take itself too seriously. And Brendan Frasier was really good looking.

So, I reread Percy Jackson this last fall/winter, and I enjoy analyzing from my perspective as a college student (ADHD, Deaf, and Trans too)

Rick Riordan sure knows how to do it right. JK Rowling is a bitch who had a good run, but Harry Potter hasn't aged well at all. Harry becomes a cop and is a snob; JK's weird retconning of the sexualities of the characters (and then her TERFism) is now and always was weird; the "goblins?" thinly disguised anti-semetic tropes. But Rick Riordan had right from the start of Percy Jackson! He provided a community for kids who genuinely felt different in the way that he describes it, where it feels more like we end up in situations but don't usually feel like we're in control of it. HP has that, sure, Harry lets a snake loose, has trouble with other kids, etc. But reading the book through Percy's sarcastic tone makes the experience so much more real, especially since you're able to keep up with his thoughts, as they come to hilarious conclusions and original puns. I love it!!! JK was good with high stakes too, but so is Rick, and he doesn't have the same bigoted vibe.

The other thing is, Percy's so smart!! He uses some pretty big words from the beginning, which is impressive for a 12-yr old kid with dyslexia and ADHD... but it's a subtle detail that I didn't think about until much later. Now I can get back into this perspective, but I have so much more life experience

and it gets better! In PJO Percy's the only POV the reader gets, and you see the reactions of people around him usually feeling annoyed, and sometimes impressed. In Son of Neptune, he returns! the Lost Hero was fun, but they're not Percy. BUT THEN, you see him from other people's points of view! Hazel and Frank both like Percy right away but also all have moments of feeling impressed with how smart Percy is.

Anyways, there's a concept of scriptures as using certain written texts as meditative and reflective practices. There's a podcast called "Harry Potter and the Sacred Text," where they read through HP and reflect on connections, lessons, thoughts, etc. after each chapter. It helps them to have such a familiar source of reference, that also provides relevant lessons and connections to our current lives and situations. This is what Tarot is, at its core. Lessons, situations, and paths shown through familiar archetypes that one learns to read deeper and deeper into the more they look at the details. The Rider-Waite decks have so much detail in each card! but I only had a booklet that came with the deck that went over each card's overall potential meanings. The really subjective stuff. There's always the internet, of course, but it's so easy to stray off track, and it's not the same as holding the information in your hands, flipping through in whatever order you want.

anyways, I'm making Percy Jackson and the Heroes of Olympus my scriptures. I want to treat reading in the morning in general as my "scripture reading time." For consistency, if nothing else. I have more media that I'm putting into this category too. The stuff I go back to time after time for comfort and guidance, or whatever. I know! I'll make a list! I'm also putting in selected films, poems, comics, magazines, zines, CDs/albums, and whatever else I think is relevant... ooh, paintings and posters too. Queerplatonic Jupiter x Percy, an AU in which Jason, who was dating Percy, died in battle with another monster, Percy works at a flower shop and [not very successfully] tries to cope with the loss of the love of his life, Jupiter meanwhile feels something strange about the sea brat.

For the first time, he ignores him with the royalty and arrogance worthy of his expensive wife - a cup of instant coffee and a dry muffin interests him much more than the king of Olympus in the youthful appearance of his peer. So, generally people send a "hey, would you mind reading over sth I wrote because I'd love feedback?" first, and wait for the reply, instead of dropping 500+ words into people's askbox.

Because I do not do major character death. That's not my jam. I'm not reading stories that deal with people losing the love of their life and having to cope with that, that's the anti-thesis to what I look for in a fic. So I am the wrong person to give you my opinion or "rate", whatever that means in the context of fanfiction, this, since the very theme of it gets negative points from me.

I wish you good luck with your writing though, and there is always someone whose favorite trope or theme something is! This is just not for me. ^^°
