tumblr’s Identity Crisis: Blog or Social Media?

In the Dictionary of Media and Communications, tumblr is listed as both a microblogging and social networking service. But to understand which aspects of each medium tumblr embodies, we need to break down each form individually.

So what is a blog? The actual word is a contraction of “web”, like the internet, and “log”. This refers to anything ‘logged’ on the internet which actually comes from when sailors would throw a log attached to a rope overboard to measure speed. Like this...

Jill Walker Rettburg writes in her book Blogging that it is a “cumulative process that allows you to get to know someone over multiple posts”. Blogs tend to be viewed in reverse chronological order and give insight into the author’s thoughts. Often blogs require context from previous posts and most blogs are “not intended to ever be completed”. Does tumblr fulfil this criteria? Yes. tumblr blogs, whether they be fandom, aesthetic or personal, are works in progress with constant, real time updates that intertwine to paint a picture of their creator.

There are three main types of blogging and tumblr hosts them all. The personal blogs are people’s general commentary on their own life experiences and use their blog as an online diary.

Then there’s filter blogs. In the early days of blogging, Jorn Barger created the site Robot Wisdom where he posted links to websites he found interesting with very little commentary attached. This is reflected in tumblr’s ability to share links instatntly, either through posting the link yourself or reblogging.

Finally, we have topic based blogging... tumblr’s specialty. Think about just how many blogs are on this site dedicated to celebrities, bands, TV shows, books, movies, sports, music... Where there’s a fandom, there’s a stack of tumblr blogs.

So tumblr clearly fits into the category of a blogging service but is it a social network too? Kyle Elmore wrote in his article about using social media in business that social media enables the individual to become a source of information. Contrary to traditional broadcast where the powerful few controlled what the public saw through mass media, social media allows anyone to produce and share content that thrives on social interaction. Social media is characterised by interaction between profiles through likes, comments, shares and direct communication. tumblr has all of these features through notes, reblogging, asks and followers. tumblr creates mini communities within itself through tags as Facebook does through groups.

The most appropriate answer to our dilemma? tumblr is a social network of blogs. Users can blog freely and interact with other blogs just as they would interact with other profiles on other social networks. In conclusion, here is a meme I made to simplify this discussion...

Missed seeing the elephants so made sure to visit the elephant enclosure at Melbourne Zoo. Did you know elephants are among the world’s most intelligent animals? They have just as much a strong sense to wander and explore as humans do.

The island from where I come from, elephants are one of the most sacred and well protected animals with their own orphanage and sanctuary. Elephants are highly intelligent creatures who travel in family units and who convey several human emotions such as grief, compassion, happiness and curiosity. Elephants around the world have been taught to paint, play football and even dance to music. Nothing but complete admiration and love for these amazing creatures!

La actriz Queta Claver nació el día 24 de junio del año 1929 en Valencia. Siempre quiso dedicarse al mundo de la interpretación, seguramente, porque su madre Enriqueta Delás, también era actriz. Estudió teatro, declamación y danza en el Conservatorio de Valencia. Pisó el escenario por primera vez junto a la compañía del actor Rafael Rivelles en el año 1950 para estrenar la obra "Un crimen vulgar". Poco tiempo después comienza a trabajar en montajes de revista musical como “¡Cinco minutos nada menos!”, “A vivir del cuento”, “Ana María” o “La chacha, Rodríguez y su padre” que llegaban a superar las 1000 representaciones y la convirtieron en una de las vedettes más importantes del país. También es muy recordada por trabajar junto al dúo cómico Zori y Santos en innumerables proyectos teatrales. En el mundo del cine solía tener papeles de reparto. Debutó con la película de José María Elorrieta "La bella Mimí" en 1960 y llegó a trabajar con los mejores directores de nuestro cine, como Mario Camus, Pilar Miró, Luis García Berlanga o Fernando Fernán Gómez en películas como “La colmena” o “Tiempo de silencio” y en series como “Estudio 1”, “Novela”, “Suspiros de España”, “Juanita la Larga”, “Goya”, “Clase media” o “Compuesta y sin novio”. Según la wikipedia, el término proviene de la palabra francesa 'Revue' y se trata de un subgénero dramático de la comedia.
