"i think couples are like the moon and the sun," he caressed my cheek one night as we were on the cusp on consciousness and sleep.

"how so?"

“well, you know how both the sun and the moon love the earth? they have different ways of showing it." his hands ran through my hair absent mindedly- his eyes were focused off into a point in the distance my eyes would never find.

it was only a matter of time before it ended and his anger came back. his rage, his rage that was so hot it burned cold- a rage so hot it ran like ice in his veins, freezing blood and the last few traces of humanity he had left. but his anger was never directed at me, nor anyone else. maybe he was constantly just angry with himself, without even knowing why. i suspected that he didn't even know when or how he was angry- he just was.

"the sun, it's so important. it's like, the lifeline, it's what makes everything live. and yet, too much sun can kill whatever life exists on earth. too much love and, boom," he imitated a blast with his hands. i giggled. "and then, there's the moon. gods, the moon. people say that it's just cold, and barren and just reflects the sun's light. but i think the moon takes the harsh yellow of the sun and turns it into this silvery, whitish glow that wouldn't hurt a soul. isn't that so poetic?"

i was silent for a second. "that's a very interesting metaphor."

he nodded, eyes refocusing and coming back to the moment we were in- the bed with the creaky springs, the faded blanket, the curl of my hair and the curve of his arm. “you're my moon, you know? you hold me so tight it freezes all the yellow i have inside."

"i know."

it was half past one am and i was reading a book again, draped over the sofa. moonage daydream was playing in the background- his choice. his head was lying on my shoulder, and my fingers were following an inaudible rhythm as i unconsciously stroked his hair.

he was asleep, i thought. i shifted to relieve my back of the pain- but he stirred and grumbled.

"sorry,"

“don't be," he murmured, a finger brushing the temple of my reading glasses and easing them off. i wondered how he did it. how he trained his fingers and his hands and his palms to be so gentle and slow when they had been meant to hold guns and knives with cruel aggression and precision. "what are you reading?"

"it's this book,-"

"wonder of wonders,"

"shut up," i grinned, tapping his forehead. "it's about this guy who goes back in time and meets his ancestors."

"and?"

"there's no and. that's it- he meets his ancestors. why does there need to be more?"

he contemplated that for a moment and nodded, shrugging.

"may i have those back?" i gestured towards my glasses, he placed them back on my nose, pushing the brow bar to make it fit snugly.

i continued reading, and he began humming along to the song. he used to call me moonage sometimes- more so because it had a vulgar other meaning. he was such a boy sometimes, i forgot what he was capable of. "i hope my ancestors see some of you in my face if i ever am to meet them."

he spoke suddenly- i wasn't expecting it. "hmm? is this your way of asking me to marry you?"

he grinned, fidgeting with a thread on the armrest. "not really," he said, "ancestors, not descendants."

"how would that work?"

"when all of this is over, i'll be at your feet, ruined, and everyone who ever knew me will somehow know you through everything i say or do. it'll be unavoidable, the mark you leave. they'll just know."

i couldn't say anything- what could i even respond with? i merely reached down and brushed a lingering kiss over his curls and settled back into reading, my fingers now following the rhythm of his humming.

'the church of man, love,' i whispered along, 'is such a holy place to be.'
