The last three weeks...
So many lectures - we're in deep now. At least some timetable changes have condensed it to a three-day week now, so yay!
Played laser tag for the first time in years with the societies, which was fun and nostalgic. Definitely bringing my friends for a game before they all turn 20(!)
The name of the game recently though has been feedback: hopefully as a lowly course rep I can resolve the existential problems of all the psychology courses - we need a serious rethink.
On the bright side, we had pancake day and valentine's day right next to each other - commemorated by pancakes (duh), seeing Madame Web in cinemas (don't get me started 🤮) and watching the same old Jacksfilms parodies.
How could I forget last valentine's day: I had a date with the careers team (to present to students), and boy that year has flown by because the time has come round again! I've done this presentation like six times now and only now have the public speaking nerves started to settle. I never get tired of hearing the same gags from my colleague who speaks after me, and the best thing is I got to hear them twice because he asked me to a second talk later on, which I took up spontaneously!
Reading week next week - halfway there, certainly living on a prayer ;)

"Jeffrey Dahmer wasn't a bad person, he was evil", and I thought ??? This was when I was watching a criminal psychologist elucidate on the serial killer's case, which is so unlikely of my youtube algorithm. He says "Dahmer would make friends, go out, treat everybody well...he never hurt his victims, he just killed them...I won't say he was a bad person, I think he was evil."
This was probably the first time when I was forced to understand that bad and evil may not be as synonymous as they probably appear. It's similar to a person who projects a pleasant exterior but might not essentially be a good person. Close to how ontology vs epistemology would explain being and being for a reason. What he meant was that humans have a place of darkness, most of them, but whether you choose to let it overpower you, is largely a decision that we make, irrespective of the circumstances. For Jeffrey, he never enjoyed the process of killing, he wasn't a sadist, and that's probably why he is described as not being bad. Moreover, without underestimating the trauma Dahmer had to undergo in his childhood he goes, "not everybody does that...a lot of people have a crappy childhood" because a part of you always has a leverage to choose. That is what essentially turns people to be good or evil.

Clementine Barnabet, The Female Axe Killer
Tumblr media
Clementine Barnabet was an American serial killer who killed upto 35 people.
Little is known of Barnabet's early life, she is believed to have been born around 1894 in Louisiana and to have had one brother. It has been alleged that Barnabet's father was abusive.
Barnabet's killings typically followed the same pattern; she would murder entire families, in one case slaying both parents and four children, and use an axe to butcher her victims and decapitate them. Her first murder is though to have been in 1911.
A full confession for 35 murders was made by the killer who spoke of her connection to the Church of Sacrifice and stated that a priestess had granted her supernatural powers to make her undetectable by the authorities also speaking about her introduction to voodoo. She cited this as the reason behind her murders. Barnabet also claimed she had followers and did not work alone. Clementine told detectives about her belief that human sacrifice would gain her immortality and added that victims were chosen at random and that children were murdered 'for their own good,' and to prevent them from being left as orphans. She is said to have smiled and happily recounted her crimes.
At just 18 years old, in October 1912, Clementine Barnabet was sentenced to life in prison, she attempted escape a year later but was caught. In August 1932, she was released from prison and there is no knowledge about her whereabouts after this.

First week back (proper)!
Plenty of early mornings, driving chaos and welcome events to resume normal programming. All the lectures were as you'd expect: here's the module, here's the assignment...
Two society taster sessions, both game nights were I had to make up the rules of Pictionary and pretend I knew what I was doing.
The cinema was showing Anchorman for its 20th anniversary so you know I had to go - forgot how iconic Ron Burgundy is. Also didn't enjoy Mean Girls, I can imagine it works better as a stage musical but not on film imo.
Got to do my first campus tours for the open day (finally) - it was a relatively small one (for freezing cold January ig) so not many to do but hopefully more down the line.
Recently I've been trying this hip new thing called ✨work-life balance✨ where I draw a hard line between uni and home. And what do you know, it's working 🙃

Put it in my veins! Very interested to see how they handle the Atlanta Child Murders, particularly post-Monster podcast (wonder if Fincher or others listened to it?). Jonathan Groff & Anna Torv are fantastic. But it's Holt McCallany who's finally getting his chance to shine. #Horror #InstaHorror #Mindhunter #Netflix #DavidFincher #SerialKillers #AtlantaChildMurders #JonathanGroff #AnnaTorv #HoltMcCallany #HorrorFan #SerialKiller #CriminalPsychology #CriminalProfiling #HorrorAddict (at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1OnGjeFOwb/?igshid=5igcpmcsu2eg
