I guess I can't really get behind cas saving dean from hell as a destiel win, or lines like 'you don't think you deserve to be saved', because. this is not a point at which cas is doing because he believes dean is good and loves him or anything but. he saves dean because that's heaven's will. when he reminds dean that cas, and heaven, are who saved him in early s4, it's not him really saying 'you're a good man', it's a debt that he is using, pretty explicitly, to get dean to do what heaven wants. even the handprint reads like... ownership, in a way.

cas is complicit in heaven's manipulation of dean after he's pulled out of hell. that's what makes his rebellion later powerful, because this is an angel who believes in heaven so strongly that he will look into the eyes of the righteous man he saved and tell him that if he doesn't do what he's told, he will throw dean back into hell.

The importance of Cas’s clothes being the same since the beginning and why it matters that Future Cas has different clothes.

When Dean first meets Cas he is dressed like, “holy tax accountant”, Jimmy Novak. This outfit we could see as unflattering and awkward. Dean makes fun on it on sight.

And yet Cas continues to dress like Jimmy against all logic. Cas is learning to love and to be human from Dean and yet his fashion never changes.

When we first meet Cas he is literally Dean’s knight in shining armour. His entrance is a hero’s entrance. This guy is a fucking prince. He is an angel and he’s here to tell Dean he SAVED HIM FROM HELL!

Future Cas, though he’s cool and he loves likes past Dean, our Dean doesn’t like him as much as he likes his own present day Cas. He famously comes back to his time, puts a hand on Cas’s shoulder and says, “don’t ever change”. He means, “I love you the way you are”.

Present day Cas is still dressed like Dean’s knight in shining armour. To continue to dress the same way as when they first met is a very romantic gesture.

Future Cas, though he looks fun and dtf, is cynical about life and therefore love. Future Cas gave up his role as Dean’s protector. He loves old Dean and is amused by him but he’s amused by everything. He has given up on being Dean’s almost-boyfriend. He is out there having orgies and not giving a fuck what his own Dean thinks. He clearly still loves him but his life is no longer Dean-centric.

He is in love but he has given up on trying.

In his own time, his Cas is literally standing on the side of the road waiting for Dean to wake up so he can help him. That is commitment; that is devotion.

That’s what Future Cas no longer has. He will follow Dean into battle and probably die but he won’t wear his hero costume anymore: he doesn’t believe in that.

The juxtaposition of the orgy scene and Cas saying, “I thought you gave up trying to label me”, has always lead me to think that maybe Future Cas and his Dean have fooled around or at least discussed Cas’s sexuality with regards to men. “No labels”, is a very bisexual thing to say and Future Cas only having sex with women would not prompt Future Dean to want to label him.

I think even Future Dean doesn’t like Future Cas as much as he used to like Cas before. If Future Cas and Future Dean ever hooked up it would’ve been in Cas’s nihilist, nothing-matters context, which I don’t think is what either Dean wants from Cas.

In a future where Cas and Dean grow apart, they both die.  In a future where their romance dies, they both die and Sam becomes Lucifer.  And he comes back to Cas to tell him not to change and so they can look at each other adoringly on the side of the road.  If there’s hope in Dean’s present, it’s with Cas, his Cas, real, hopeful, devoted, tax-accountant-looking, Cas.

I'm curious: in your personal reading of Cas as ace, do you also consider him another orientation (romantic or sexual)? For me personally, I consider him gay and ace, or sometimes gay-oriented aroace.

this is a good question actually lol. most of me wants to say that cas is gay and ace because he did canonically fall in love w/ another man and it means a lot to people to call him the gay angel even though i think he’s the ace angel so like gay ace is a v good compromise i think. ace angel handshake emoji gay angel you know!

however (unpopular opinion warning) i do have a little trouble with meg. with every other woman cas is around he either doesn’t have any chemistry (hannah, daphne), it’s CLEARLY a platonic relationship (kelly), or it’s clearly some kind of comphet weirdness (the orgies in 5.04, the reaper in s9 which also counts as rape in my book). w/ meg though his affection seemed both genuine and...i know but... ??? borderline romantic ??? hard to say. it definitely doesn’t negate or cancel out the obvious and canonical feelings he had for dean, but he liked her! he was dtf! in a way that was very different from his thing with the reaper in cursed season 9.

so like: ??? ace and gay and willing to bang a lady anyway maybe? like because when you’re ace you’re not physically attracted to ANYBODY, so it’s impossible to be physically attracted to whoever you’re banging - ace people have sex for other reasons - emotional intimacy, because it feels good, w/e. so he could have been ace and gay and still willing to nonromantically bang his lady friend just as a form of affection. “biromantic” def feels like the wrong label for cas, even if you slap a “demi-” in front of it - if anything, i’d call him unoriented. 

by unoriented i mean: i myself don’t use the split attraction model bc i don’t like it. that doesn’t mean i think it’s bad in general or bad for other people, it’s just not what i like. so when i say i’m asexual that’s the whole label. my romantic orientation isn’t “aro” or “gay” or “bi” or whatever it’s that i just don’t have one. subtle but distinct difference. so i could see something like that for cas, bc what is he there for if not to project on. he fell in love w/ dean because dean is dean (and in “like” w/ meg because meg is meg) and his orientation or lack thereof had nothing to do with it, you know?

this is NOT EVEN GETTING INTO the secret essay i have on how angel sexuality is totally different than human sexuality - because the taboo is to be attracted to humans, and gender has nothing to do with it - this is ALSO because angel gender is probably totally different than human gender, and human gender is totally fucking made up anyway - male seahorses have the babies, you know? it’s not that defining sexuality and gender is bad (labels are good because they help people be comfortable with themselves and find other people with similar experiences!) but we put the label on the experience, we don’t try to make the experience fit the label.

anyway, the point of all this to say that sexuality is weird and complicated (even moreso when you’re talking about the aro and ace spectrum, even MORE SO when you remember that the way we classify it seems to be somewhat arbitrarily based on gender, which again is kind of a fake concept that we made up), and it seems a liiiittle pointless to try and like, qualify cas’s romantic orientation when the sum total of his romantic feelings (except for MAYBE the .1% of genuine connection he had w/ meg) are just wholly devoted to and laser-focused on dean. like, CANONICALLY, castiel loves dean winchester to the total exclusion of other people. what else really matters, yk

that said, dean happens to be male and cas happens to be in a male vessel, so yes, technically the factual thing to say is that he’s gay and ace because that fits canon, it makes the people who him being gay has meaning for happy, and it also keeps exclusionists on tumblr from calling you homophobic. (apparently headcanoning a gay character as being aspec is homophobic even though the two are not at all mutually exclusive and being aspec isn’t code for being straight because aces ARE queer?? bro don’t even get me started lol)

sorry anon this answer got way longer than intended! but yeah i do think cas is queer like twice over - firstly because he loves a human (angel queer), and secondly because he loves one of his own gender (human queer). you might also say he’s some kind of genderqueer too based on your interpretation of angel genders (???) vs the gender cas became when he decided to stick around in jimmy (male, ostensibly, but many other headcanons work for that too). he’s like queer squared. and i love him. my rainbow angel <3

I’d say you’re the worst but I guess I did this to myself and also this was actually fun to think about aside from the unreasonable amount of panic that I’m forgetting stuff. 

With the exception of #1, please don’t hold me to this ranking order, it came out in the order I thought of stuff.

Definitely, Dean prefers the hot, too. I mean, of course he does–who doesn’t? I’m thinking of the fatsucker episode, where they were talking to that girlfriend, and while she talked about her fat dead husband Sam was faintly repulsed and Dean just looked thoughtful. A little cushion for the pushin’–doesn’t seem like a bad idea, really. There’s also way back in that first Gabriel episode. Granted, hard to pull canon from that since it’s a rashomon story, but Dean’s vision of the grad student was a sexy black dress–Sam’s vision was a, yes, slightly chunky white trash chick, and Dean seemed perfectly happy to be there. The thing is, I can picture Dean happy with either version–eager and thrilled and ready to bang at the slightest invitation–which I can’t do, with Sam. Sam found white trash chick faintly repulsive, too; just look how his POV relates the story, with her half-puking and then swallowing it, and her blue eyeshadow, and both of them sloppy. He’s clearly grimacing, and it might be because of behavior entirely, but then why does his POV put her in an entirely different body? The grad student actress could’ve played both roles–but she didn’t, and I think that tells us a leetle something.

The thing is that, duh, TV world, both of them are super sexy and most of their hookups are going to be wannabe starlets who are also sexy. That’s just the way it goes. But the part I find genuinely interesting is in the difference between their attitudes. Dean just comes across as… happy to be there? “Oh, you want to have sex with me? Hooray!” I’m sure he has preferences, too, but everything I can think of seems to be a personality preference–Bela’s hot as fuck, but he will not have sex with her because he finds her personally repulsive. Same as the middle-aged ladies in Ask Jeeves–if they’d been cool and not awful, I can one hundred percent see Dean being the filling in a MILF sandwich and then bragging about it afterwards to Sam. In contrast, Sam comes across with much stronger preferences. Note, clearly not (canonically) demisexual, since he banged down with Piper after a single diner conversation and with Dr Cara after a total of half an hour of case-related talk–he’s dtf and I love him for it. But he’s also not dtf with any random lady who waves her cooch his way, and that’s… great.

Isn’t that great? It’s not a bad thing, to have preferences–it’s only cool-different-strange when those preferences are counter to your expectations for a character. Think how easy it’d be to write Badass Cool Guy Dean as someone who rolls his eyes at the chicks who throw themselves at him, and to have him be cold, and only fuck just the right femme fatale who measures up to his standards. We know that character, we’ve had to hang out with him. How totally unexpected and fuggin delightful is it that the real Dean is in fact none of that, and is instead a warm muffin who grins about all the ladies and goes so soft under affection that he practically dissolves into a puddle? And then by contrast: educated feminist liberal Sam, it’d be so easy to picture him with a beautiful at any size t-shirt on, and seriously blogging about how society’s expectations are harmful blah blah blah. And the thing is, I bet he would; I just find it more interesting if, in his heart of hearts, he doesn’t actually feel it. Characters are always more interesting with contradictory layers.

it’s technically up to interpretation but I have also spend a lot of time thinking about it so here is my interpretation:

Ted was attracted to Henry the first time he saw him. Like yeah, he was fucking annoyed when he ran into him bc he was grieving but part of him also was like: ~oh?~

Henry being nice to him didn’t really help either, because if he was an asshole, it would be a lot easier to hate him and Ted doesn’t like getting attached to people (dude has abandonment issues, we all know this by now)

But he kept growing fonder of Henry, because Henry is so sweet and nice and he doesn’t deserve any of Teds mean words (so Ted apologises)

Then, of course, there is New Year’s Eve and what Henry did there was really sweet so.. Ted’s getting attached and there’s nothing he can do about it anymore.

It’s just a platonic crush at this point, because dude’s still hoping for Bri to come back, clearly.

Henry is nice and Ted wouldn’t mind a friend so there he goes, deciding to put some effort into being a decent person.

He finds himself trusting Henry and telling him stuff that he never really told anyone (he’s still trying to keep at least some of those walls up tho)

He also finds himself more and more attracted to Henry, now more because of his personality than his looks (he still thinks Henry is handsome af tho lol)

You remember that chapter before the bonfire? Where Henry kinda flirts with Ted a little? Ted was totally dtf here.

Let’s skip forward to the bonfire at the lake. Ted could have dealed with Dean alone but he still Tiramisu-ed Henry bc Henry was right there and him pretending to be his boyfriend is nice, somehow.

When Ted jokingly teases Henry with making out somewhere, he means it.

Then Brianna shows up and shit goes down.

Ted is reminded of how much he still loves her and he decides that his attraction to Henry is platonic, objective at the most.

(He notices Henry stare at his lips on that dock tho and he can’t deny that he wouldn’t mind a kiss. It wouldn’t have to mean anything, Henry is just very attractive. Right? Right.)

The next days are a rollercoaster, Ted is completely overwhelmed by all his feelings and eventually decides to just do nothing about it.

Then there‘s the bathroom incident with Mason and that‘s when it kind of hits Ted how much he doesn’t want to loose Henry.

Part of him knows he likes him more than just as a friend but he tries to ignore it. Henry being his friend is already more than he could have ever hoped for (after all someone has a really low self esteem)

Then they share a bed and Henry is really cute when he clings to Ted like this so well shit, being bisexual is tough and bitches are yearning, Ted‘s bitches.

This is also why Ted is kinda overwhelmed for a moment when Henry tells him “I love you” the next chapter. Ted’s absolutely fine with the platonic use of those words but it’s been a while since he heard it from anyone, really and hearing it from Henry hits even deeper.

Ted kissing Henry? He regretted suggesting it right after the words left his mouth. Not because he doesn’t want to kiss Henry but because he’s already a little in love and this is gonna make everything worse. He kisses Henry anyway, because he wants to help and also Henrys lips look so very soft so he doesn’t want to miss his chance of kissing them at least once in his life.

He regrets it a little, when it’s over, because he knows it won’t ever happen again and it felt way too good.

He is very very deep in love at this point, and he’s mad at himself about it but also how could he not be in love?

Also that moment in the hospital? Ted was absolutely gonna tell Henry, but he got scared. After all, he fell in love with his best friend before and that didn’t work out well, so he’d rather not risk another friendship. Henry means too much to him.
