West Wing, Season 4 "Election Night"
My children, when they turned 18 registered and voted. Like, they did it just fine. I'm astonished at how incompetent Donna is in this episode. Mail in ballots are especially easy to navigate because you aren't under a time crunch. You have the ballot, you can look at it for hours, days even and study it all you like. How she oopsied and voted for the other guy... I have no idea. And she's savvy enough to know the rank of someone in the military just by looking at their insignia. I have no idea how to interpret anything on a military uniform. Sheesh. I'd say Josh needs to find a better admin support person.
Will Bailey is definitely the best part of the episode for me. I just love that he's so passionate about his guy, or more so the idea the guy represented. I'm also reminded California is also the bluest state yet with the most concentration of Republicans. It's fitting Will's uphill battle for a Democrat in Orange County is depicted here.
Also, Debbie Fiderer, as portrayed by the indomitable Lily Tomlin. I love her. I love how she can just be funny but somehow control the room, at least in this episode, Josh. I really do love the character.

goddamn for all its flaws, the west wing was perhaps one of the best-acted shows and (often) among the best-written
fucking POSSE COMITATUS
martin sheen’s president bartlet is some mix of:
- furious that he’s being forced into this choice with sharif
- aggrieved that it’s all being treated like a foregone conclusion
- devastated that this last (or maybe only) piece of humanity has to be ripped away from him
and he plays it with this casual demeanor as if he can deny reality. every response and question he brings to the sit room is like him playing the part, a figurative sidelong glance and a smirk like “look at these guys” to the audience
surely, this is the most absurd meeting i’ve ever sat in, he says
knowing this choice is one he was (probably) always going to have to make, given the state of the world
and perhaps it’s just that he couldn’t (didn’t have to) confront it until now
but every decision he’s made has been of this magnitude
[ok and then obviously CJ AND SIMON]
[DEBBIE FIDERER]
what a fucking episode

Ten fandoms, ten characters, ten tags
random selection. no ranking. I was guided by a simple criterion: these are the characters I could read fanfics about and would never get bored.
Mrs Druse - Kingdom Hospital (how could i NOT include a medium)
Mike Ehrmantraut - BCS (I need grounding in my life. Mike delivers.)
Johnny Sack - The Sopranos (stfu Phil, MY estimation of John Sacrimoni as a man has NEVER plummeted)
Deborah Fiderer - The West Wing (let's face it, Aaron Sorkin was utterly crap at writing female characters. But Debbie was different. She wasn't moulded by any sorkinian cookie cutter. She oozed quirkiness. No wonder she was handled very well after Sorkin's departure. I dramatically want a Debbie-focused spin-off that shows who was on the other end of the line of the phone call in the epilogue of S05E20)
Candy - The Deuce (we had a chat about that with @darknesia; essentially, we both claim that The Deuce had two characters in the centre and neither were the Martino brothers. It's Abby and Candy. But Abby's entire life arc from college time 'til seniority is shown transparently throughout the show. It's like I know too much about her to judge her. So I'm more intrigued about and sympathetic to Candy - and the story of her Tough Choices she never talked about)
Catherine Standish - Slough House (no, she's not another Debbie, she's not Connie Sachs either, and there's a reason why I decided to include Standish rather than Connie here. She IS slough house.)
Djikstra - The Witcher (okay so I always imagine Sapkowski modelled him on some sort of Soviet MGIMO-trained, gym-going, lapsed intellectual party apparatchik that he worked with during his time in sales ... but there's just so much more to Djikstra. Every time I revisit a scene with Djikstra I see new layers, depths and combinations)
Donna Clark - HACF (obviously SHE moved the ship, not Gordon, not remotely Cameron let alone Mr MacMillan. big brains? big love! simple as.)
Cardinal Voiello - The Young Pope/The New Pope (yeah, I know I already featured Djikstra as a Richelieu-style character... but Voiello literally is a cardinal, like Richelieu. And he's probably read what Kiss*nger wrote on Richelieu. More than that, he's like someone who made his life project to be more indispensable to the pope than Sodano)
Milner - Utopia (model for all UK female home secretaries of the last 13 years?)
thx @cherrypoison1889 for tagging me

good morning to smartass harvard graduates, girls who like goldfish, cantankerous fathers of twins, doctors who’ve been sued for malpractice, guys who got a way better job than they applied for, sweetheart lawyers from orange county, ca, girls who got asked out by a guy from the vatican, guys who called the butterball hotline, girls with severe pollen allergies, secretaries who keep cookies on their desks, girls who think yo-yo ma rules, speech writers who are fond of alliteration, soldiers with a tendency towards insubordination, genetically-doomed alcoholics, and girls who accidentally crashed their work’s email server by forwarding an email about raisin muffins.

Senator Adar: So, there he was, on his deathbed, 50 years to the day, 50 years since the signing of the Declaration, July 4th, Independence Day. There he is, on his deathbed...
Bartlet : Which one are you with now, Senator Adar? Jefferson?
Adar: Adams. But of course both of them were dying on the same 4th of July, that's what's so amazing.
Bartlet: Ahh.
Adar: 50 years since that day in Independence Hall, immortalized in Trumball's famous painting of the scene. Two great giants dying on their country's birthday, after years of friendship and feuding. [pause] As diplomats in Paris...
Bartlet: Excuse me. I'm sorry, Senator. This will only take a second. *leaves Oval Office and heads to Debbie's desk* Debbie, you were supposed to interrupt after five minutes.
Debbie: It's only been three, sir.

PSA: If you like strong women have not seen The West Wing, you owe it to yourself. All the characters are awesome, and the issues are real and still relevant, but they nailed a lot of issues 25 years before it was acceptable to.
That being said, I am a dude...but I think the point still stands. I'm not even left wing and I adore this show, for so many reasons, the characters are just a small part.
