There had been a difficult time in Tony’s 60s, after some tabloid had published a series of pictures, gathered over the course of a few months, and titled it ’15 times Tony Stark looked like his husband’s dad’. Tony had sunken into a feverish spiral, searching for a ‘cure’ for aging while simultaneously trying to convince Steve to divorce him, because he was only going to get older.

It had taken time and long nights of talking and lovemaking to bring his husband back into the moment with him. Somehow, Tony had forgotten that Steve meant the ‘until death do us part’ portion of their vows.

This fic was another early 1872 find for me and I simply cannot recommend it enough: the slow burn, the hurt comfort, the romance-this fic does it all masterfully.

RATING: one broken cowpoke's heart, but the hurt is tempered by the knowledge that the love perseveres on, 💔

If you have yet to heal from the hurt of 1872 Issue 2, then this is the fic for you. This fic is the best deconstruction of emotion following the Sheriff's death that I have read yet, savage in both it's sadness and it catharsis, and I cannot recommend this highly enough.

This fic!!!!!! Is wonderful and delivers a years-long sweeping arc of a wartime romance before dropping you off at the front door of 1872 canon. It's such a heartfelt exploration of love blooming amidst the chaos and tragedy of war, of the way two people keep getting drawn back to each other again and again, of second chances and third chances and fourth, all culminating in a freedom both precarious and precious to be found in the West.

Stark frustrates Sheriff Rogers, but that doesn't mean he wants to see the man drink himself to death. Timely needs a blacksmith, after all.

RATING: two out of two prettiest blue eyes this side of the Mississippi, at least according to the cowboy locked in the Sheriff's cell for tonight 👀

An incredible pre-canon character study from the POV of Timely's favorite Sheriff. I feel as though this fic is so true to canon characterization and setting that it could honestly constitute the first page of an 1872 novelization. You really sink into Steve's mindset and his perspective on not just Tony's perennial drunkenness, but on his duties to the town as a whole.

A beautiful canon-compliant fic that pulls at the thread of romance hidden in the rough, vibrant fabric of 1872. There's so much tenderness in this story, it aches in the best way :')

The sweetest, tenderest and yet slightly rough around the edges 1872 PWP you will ever see. I adore Steve and Tony's banter in this fic, the dialogue at the beginning feels like it could have been ripped right out of the comic book panels. And!! There is simply nothing more delightful than the simple intimacy of going from "Stark" and "Sheriff" to "Tony" and "Steve" <3

RATING: a Sheriff rougher to ride and wilder to tame than a stallion🐎

I could scream forever!!! about the parallels in this story between Tony's alcoholism and his addiction to Steve! The tug-of-war push and pull of their facsimile of a relationship, the hurt that Steve's internal shame over wanting a man inflicts on both him and Tony, the habitual way that Tony debases himself to play up the drunken act and protect him and Steve from any prying eyes. This fic does a truly masterful job of imagining what intimate encounters between Steve and Tony may have looked like within the real confines of the American West.

Blacksmithing only brings in so much money in a small town like Timely, so Tony has to make a little extra money through less respectable means. The Sheriff doesn't approve.

An INCREDIBLE primer on the 1872-niverse, including panel screenshots as well as comparisons to 616 characterizations and backstories! I can personally say that this 1872 propaganda is extremely effective (after all, it convinced me to read!!), and gives you juuuust enough information on 1872 to acquaint you with the setting, the characters, and the dynamics at play without simply spoiling the series. In my opinion, this is a highly underrated resource for anyone interested in trying 1872 out, but unsure what to expect.

Cap-IM Rec Week: Take A Chance on Me Sunday

I started reading this series with very ambivalent feelings about Disney World and by the end of this series I would have lain down by own life for ol' Mick the veteran Slick.

She, on the other hand, is made of better stuff. In which Tony compares people to weird things, Steph recites poetry and two dorks fall in love.

I usually don't go in for genderbender shenanigans but I remember coming across this and being like I know that if anyone can make me get into this, it'll be this writer. And fuck me! I was right. This is absolute motherfucking nuts! Wholly earnest character study with the sweetest relationship building. I want to bury myself in this fic like an ostrich buries itself in sand.

I watched Snowpiercer once and was O.O after so I definitely never expected to find or read fic set in its universe. But holy shit is this written well and holy shit did I have a blastin' good time.

WIP - last line tag game

I have an absurd amount of WIP's, some of which may never even see the light of day, but I'll just leave a couple samples here of ones that will hopefully be completed in the not so distant future...

i) chapter 6 of "Kindred" (that's right, I haven't forgotten about this fic! Just took a little hiatus to the Dave York Pit but I WILL finish this Max fic! Eventually...)

He whines in protest when your body peels away from his and you slide off the bed, but he’s too spent to do much about it other than half-heartedly reach an arm out in your direction before it flops back onto the mattress. You can’t help but let out a little giggle over how wrecked you made him so quickly but you know you two can’t stay in bed forever, it’s Sunday and Alistair will be home today and there’s a lot to figure out between now and then. You pick up his discarded dress shirt from last night from the floor and slide into it, doing up a few of the middle buttons but foregoing any further clothing items. You can shower and get dressed for the day after you get some caffeine into your system, you decide. You pad out of the bedroom and head down the stairs to get the coffee and the rest of your day with Maxwell started.

ii) chapter 5 of Playdate

“You know what we do to naughty girls, don’t you?” He asks, breath hot against your ear and you quickly shake your head.  “Show me” you breathe out, heart hammering in your chest.

iii) chapter 1 of (untitled) - a Frankie prompt I was asked to write. I've been on the struggle bus with this one, lol. But I'm trying to get it written for them.

“Frankie, baby” you soothe, pulling on his shoulder and forcing him to turn towards you. Surprisingly he doesn’t fight it, just lets you roll him over and he instantly buries his face in your neck once he’s facing you, unable to look you in the eyes. But you don’t need to see him, you can feel the hot tears on his cheeks as he presses into you and you wrap your arms around his shoulders a little tighter, one hand cradling the back of his head as he lets his emotions out.

Favorite line(s): Ellie’s trying on stoicism for size, but it doesn't quite fit. Joel can still see their memory haunting her, more often than not. The glazed-over look she sometimes gets that she shakes off when she catches him looking. It never works as well as she thinks it does. Joel's too familiar with it not to recognize the signs of a memory eating you from the inside out.

Why I love it: Beautifully written, this story is set after episode 5 and features the burgeoning relationship between Joel and Ellie in a way that is touching and grounded in pitch perfect characterization. Truly a great read if you’re looking for a short story that deals with Ellie taking care of Joel despite his best attempts to push her away.
