Collared earthstar (Geastrum triplex)
These gorgeous fungi emerge initially as a globe-like fruiting body consisting of a spore sac (the bulbous part on top) and an outer layer that will quickly split and spread outwards, pushing the spore sac higher and forming the star shape underneath. These fungi are known as 'collared' because of the 'arms' of this species having a tendency to crack as they bend backwards, forming a sort of 'collar' that the spore sac sits on, as you can see in this photo.

Plant of the Day (today not a plant but a fungus)
Friday 2 December 2022
In the Cruickshank Botanic Garden, Aberdeen, Scotland, I recently saw these amazing earthstar fungi, Geastrum species. The fruiting bodies were appearing from the underground mycelium which seemed to be thriving in the humus rich debris beneath a Juniperus recurva.

The nice thing about living in the not-desert again is that I don't have to try very hard to find life. These mushrooms (top: earthstar, two bottom: Mycena corticola) were spotted at the little park in town. (Wisconsin, USA - 1/2023)

Cladonia sp. and Geastrum tenuipes, Aotearoa, photo credit me.
My favourite genus of lichen, AND an earthstar! I spent ages trying to get good photos of this Cladonia patch, but I’m kind of unhappy with the results because the angle of light from the sun.
Earthstars are VERY cool because imo they look the most like alien eggs out of any fungus.
