Summary: After her death at the hands of the Jin, Wen Qing's spirit lingers. Kay's comments: As you can tell, I'm currently hungering for Wen Qing deserves a little revenge, as a treat. Wen Qing should have been allowed to go a little apeshit. In this story she gets to do so and I absolutely loved it. After her death, she lingers as a ghost in Lanling and learns of Wen Ning still being alive (and being experimented on) and the upcoming Siege on the Burial Mounds. She tries his best to stop it, but unfortunately, she's just a small little spirit. It's only when the Burial Mounds get involved that she gets the power-up she needs to take revenge. Excerpt: But it is not enough. Wen Qing can see it in their faces as they call for more blood. No one speaks on her brother’s behalf, but Wen Qing does not expect them to. Not even Jiang Wanyin, who’d had Wei Wuxian at his side for years, utters a single word in his defense. Instead, he is one of the ones most adamant about bringing about his downfall. “Yunmeng-Jiang is more than happy to lead the siege against the Burial Mounds,” Jiang Wanyin declares. Wen Qing swarms around him unnoticed, wishing she had hands so that she could wring his neck. Ingrate! Have you forgotten your debts? Of your visit to the Burial Mounds? You know there is no army, only the elderly and a toddler. Wen Qing surges around him, filled with anger yet unable to interact with its source in the slightest. And to think, my brother was willing to lay down his life for you, to give up his core. Jiang Wanyin is undeserving of such a gift. Wen Qing regretted that she allowed herself to be convinced into giving it to him. I should rip that core right out of your chest and make you mundane once more. Wen Qing thinks bitterly. Leave your lower dantian empty and hollow, just like your heart.

Random thought of the day of Jiang Cheng being hunted by Wei Wuxian’s memory.

Jiang Cheng definitely saw Wei Wuxian everywhere he went. It had been months since the siege had happened, yet the shock of it had lingered ever since. It was an odd feeling, he had seen the dark cultivator die with his own eyes. He had the bamboo flute that had created an indescribable terror in the cultivation world to prove it. The evidence of said event was right there… Why couldn’t he shake the feeling that Wei Wuxian would come back?

No matter how many times he gazed at the flute, no matter how many times he would get praised for vanquishing the evil Yiling Patriarch, Jiang Cheng still saw the boy he grew up with running through the empty halls of Lotus Pier, his laughter carried on the wind that made his red ribbon flutter with each movement.

Sometimes the quiet and stillness of the night would be too much to bear, and some nights it was better to remain awake. Just like when they were younger, how he would notice Wei Wuxian’s absence because he used to sneak out and the room would fall quiet without the constant shifting in his sleep and soft sleep filled mumbles.

He’d often wake up in a cold sweat, muttering his name before dragging himself in a daze towards the lake in the middle of the night, because he knew Wei Wuxian liked to sneak out and take a midnight swim, especially after his mother found whatever excuse to punish him. But there was no one there. No one swims under the moonlight, disturbing the still waters of the lotus lake. There was no quick yet quiet sound of a certain sword cutting through the humid air, the head disciple of Yunmeng practicing his sword forms over and over, even if everyone in lotus pier knew he didn’t have a need to do it, because he was already extraordinary and a skillful swordsman.

“Jiang Cheng, It’s so hot in here, let’s go for a swim!” He’d hear that excited, cheerful voice next to him, as if time had remained frozen on the good days. If he focused his gaze towards the horizon, he could trick his mind into thinking Wei Wuxian was sitting next to him. “Look, the sky is so full of stars! I bet they look better from the lake, come on, we’ll be back before anyone notices!”

“I hate you… I hate you so much…” the words are gritted out, fingers gripping the dark bamboo flute tight and closer to his chest. The water sloshes quietly, and he hates how quiet it is. He never thought he would hate the silence so much. “I hate you, Wei Wuxian. You took everything from me…” He whispered over and over, hoping to believe those words over the tears silently sliding down his face.

The journey to the location the corpse wanted was slow, due to Lan Wangji’s injuries and Wei Wuxian’s rigid body. The ever silent Wen Yuan peered over Wei Wuxian’s shoulders as he held onto them, eyes big and round as he looked at who he onced called rich-gege.

Lan Wangji couldn’t focus enough to even notice.

Upon arrival, Lan Wangji swayed, knees shaking as he collapsed. If not for Wei Wuxian who had been in front of him, he would definitely be on the floor, but his resentment did the job of keeping his legs locked so he didn’t fall with all three of them.

“Lan Zhan…” Wei Wuxian used his resentment to support his arms, supporting Lan Wangji with one while setting Wen Yuan down with the other. “A..Yuan…” He gestured to the dilapidated bed in the abandoned home loosely. “Dust…”

Wen Yuan scampered over quietly to the wooden bed to remove rubble and dust, wiping as much off as he could with his little hands. While he did that, Wei Wuxian very slowly stepped forward, one foot after another until he stood next to it. “Yuan…”

The little boy moved out of the way, starting to look around for anything for the hurt gege to rest his head on. “Ah!” He tugged on the shredded curtains, and with a few big heaves, he fell back in a heap. He popped out of the gray cloth, the sight making the corpse’s eyes squint slightly in what Wen Yuan thinks is his way of laughing now. “Xian-gege...” He speaks very quietly in a hoarse tone, much more quietly than he usually does, as he toddles clumsily back over with the armful of cloth.

“Thank…you…” Wei Wuxian carefully lowered Lan Wangji to the bed first so he was sitting, supporting him with one arm while Wen Yuan helped him fold the curtain into a make-shift headrest with the other.

Once Lan Wangji was comfortably settled on his stomach and his head resting, the corpse exhaled quietly as if whatever he had just done with the little boy was quite the task. Well, it was, but not when he was alive it wasn’t. “A-Yuan…” He holds out his hand slowly for the boy to take, then helps him get on the bed to sit beside the man. “Stay…”

Wen Yuan whimpered and held onto Wei Wuxian’s robes, a little tremor in his shoulders. “S-scared, baba…”

The corpse froze momentarily, but then allowed himself to fall to his knees once more and lean into the arms that came to hug his face. This was no surprise to Wei Wuxian. He’d not seen it all, but the little boy had seen too much. “Baba…will be…outside…pick…herbs.”

“Baba…”

He nuzzled the boy to comfort him, but for a time, all Wen Yuan did was cling harder. “Watch…Lan Zhan…Baba…will be…right…here.”

Lan Wangji stared at the two with half-lidded eyes, feeling a deep aching throb move over his back in waves. “I won’t let anything happen to him…” His voice came quiet as if trying to match their volumes without thinking, but really it was just the exhaustion.

Wei Wuxian lifted his head slowly, his hand once more naturally returning to the little one’s back in slow, silent strokes. His gaze was calculating, but then he spoke once more. “You’re hurt.” He repeated, leaning down to hold his mouth against Wen Yuan’s forehead in what seemed to be a mock-kiss before gently scooting him back onto the bed. “Don’t…touch…Lan Zhan..’s….back.” The corpse leaned in and whispered something into the child’s ear, before finally letting him go to get up.

Lan Wangji’s eyelashes lowered in slow, drowsy movements. Ah…his back must be a mess if the other could tell where he was injured. He couldn’t find it in himself to regret it though, not as he watched the slow retreat of black robes through the broken doorway with blurry eyes.

His eyes felt heavy, but much more so as a small warmth leaned into his side carefully and held his hand. He wanted to turn his head, but it hurt too much, he was too tired…too…

don’t mind me i’m just thinking abt how in yi city the lesson wei wuxian was teaching the juniors was to face their fears—and not let said fears impede them—and then in the second siege of the burial mounds, where it matters most, the juniors are not only the first ones rushing in alongside wangxian to fight the hordes of fierce corpses regardless of their fear, but are also working together as a cohesive group so that they can all survive instead of trying to fight this battle on their own

the problem with splitting novel!mdzs into turnabouts is that flashbacks are a huge chunk of the book but they don't have mysteries/ cases to solve so they've gotta be lumped together with present day stuff. imo? many of the flashbacks would likely have to be abridged so they could be retold ala DL-6, SL-9, or the fourth grade incident, where characters talk about it over some pieces of art. this is really difficult when theres a metric ton of unspoken, complex, and signifcant history between every character lmao

there's not as much of a problem with the cql timeline but i have not finished it. so.

the opening cutscenes in ace attorney always show the murder and/or the murderer plotting. the first cutscene of the game would be MXY summoning WWX, muttering about getting revenge on his family (it would also be good for him to mention the yllz being dead because that's how the novel starts.) cut to WWX's POV as he wakes up covered in blood and the investigation segment begins.

for investigations of monsters (goddess, saber, etc) the cutscene would be a scene of some poor throwaway cultivator getting their shit wrecked.

it would be cool to make a breakdown for JGY but again I need to review that scene cause I don't know who I'd base him on. maybe Vasquez or Dahlia.

Hey just read your lovely hands fanfic and the concept of the blood pool being a prison for malevolent entities barred from the cycle of reincarnation is so COOL , is it a thing implied between the lines and we western audiences lack the cultural context to recognise it ?, or is it something you came up with if so can I have permission to incorporate the concept into my own fan works?

It is a cultural thing. It's not even implied in the novel. It's just outright stated. But it's one of those hundreds of tiny cultural details that probably fly over the head of the international audience.

Remember when the Wen people came back as bloody corpses to protect Wei Ying and fought back the fierce corpses riled up by the repaired Yin Hufu?

In this part, the novel describes the events following the first Sige of the Burial Mound. After the hundred cultivator houses slaughtered these defenseless elderlies, women, and children, they threw their corpses into the blood pool, thus forever barring them from reincarnation.

The phrase the novel uses is 永不超生 (lit. to never again be reborn, to be barred from the cycle of reincarnation forever). That's not a figure of speech. The novel is being literal. The Burial Mound itself is already a prison for all kinds of undead and ghost wraiths. The blood pool, by the novel descriptions, amounts to a maximum security cell. A ghost in the Burial Mound can eventually let go of their grudge/resentment and enters the afterlife/reincarnation. But anybody thrown into the blood pool doesn't have this option.

永不超生 is commonly portrayed in Chinese culture as a punishment by the authority of the underworld. That's not a judgment that a mortal is allowed to make.

The fact that the Hundred Houses carried out 永不超生 on the Wen is a detail that speaks of both their arrogance and their awareness of their guilt.

The Hundred Houses are well aware what they did to the Wen remnants is a sin. The custom of the time is, if you profess yourself to be the righteous side and slay someone seen as 'evil/villain,' it's customary to hang their corpses up for all to see.

Remember Nie Mingjue beheading Wen Xu and hanging Wen Xu's head at the gate of Uncleam Realm for all to see? NMJ is not doing that just because he has a vendetta against the Wen. He's doing that as part of ancient customs to declare to all that 'his kill is righteous,' that he doesn't need to hide it, and that Wen Xu and the Wens are villains that need to be put down.

That's the principle. Justice has no need to hide.

But not only did the Hundred Houses hide the corpses of the Wen remnants, but they also imprisoned their souls, hoping that would keep the Wen from coming back as grudge wraiths or for the karmic cycle itself to snap back for this sin.

The Hundred Houses built up the Wen remnants to be this evil army at Wei Ying's beck and call. So they need to be put down. But the truth is that they were just a bunch of elderlies, women, and children who spent all their lives being doctors (as they belong to the Qihuang branch, with their own pacifistic philosophy).

Had the Hundred Houses performed the custom and showed their supposedly righteous kill to the world, then the truth would out. That they were either liars or stupid, and that they best be prepared to repay for their transgression on both innocent Wens and on the authority of hell itself.

And that, my friend, is why the second Burial Mound Siege ended the way it did, and why the vast majority of those same cultivators left Wei Ying alone afterward. What do you think those same cultivators think when their victims break out of the supposedly unbreakable maximum security cell to save Wei Ying (another of their victims)? And then those same Wen souls entered the afterlife?

The Western vernacular for this part is: Karma is a tenacious bitch with a long memory. It doesn't matter how much they lie about their crime and act like they are righteous or how good they think they hide the proof of their deeds. Heaven and hell itself are watching.

....Sorry, I have some strong feelings about the treatment of the Wen remnants.

So I just did some math, and y’all got me fucked up. I’ve seen so much handwringing in this fandom about the age disparity between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian’s body because “oh, lwj is soooooo much older than Mo Xuanyu, it ‘basically’ counts as a grooming that wwx was given such a young body and lwj is still attracted to him!”

It’s literally not true. Lan Wangji is around 33 at the start of the present-day plotline. Mo Xuanyu is 27. Y’all are so full of shit.

The math:

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are around the same age, give or take some months. They are 15/16 at the start of the Cloud Recesses arc, the discussion conference in Qishan happens less than two years later (16), the Wen indoctrination camp happens definitively when they are 17 (madam yu says so) a year later, then the Sunshot Campaign takes place 2 weeks after that with Lotus Pier’s fall. The war lasts for around a year or two, but wwx mentions he is 20 during the Phoenix Mountain hunt. This means he’s still 20 when he breaks the Wen remnants out of the labor camps 2 months later, and they abscond to the Burial Mounds. For Burial Mounds arc timeline, you have to go by A-Yuan/Lan Sizhui’s. A-Yuan is a teething toddler between one and two (jc deduces) in the Burial Mounds. He’s 15 at the start of the story 13 years later. The Burial Mounds settlement, therefore, lasts about a year. By the time of the siege, wwx should be 21 (again, give or take a few months). Thirteen years later, lwj is 33/34.

Mo Xuanyu, on the other hand, is given a definite age start. He is 14 when he is taken by Jin Guangshan back to Koi Tower. This happens after the siege but before Nie Mingjue dies (Jin Guangyao mentions this in the chapt. 79 flashback during his argument with Nie Mingjue about Xue Yang), and Nie Mingjue dies a year after the first siege takes place. This would mean that Mo Xuanyu is 14 when the siege happens and, 13 years later, he would be 27 when he sacrifices his body to summon Wei Wuxian.

Mo Xuanyu is not some barely-legal young adult at the start of the story, and the age difference, besides, would be 7 years at most. The fact that this is regular discourse is embarrassing.

I'm so tired of takes that say Wei Wuxian was absolutely perfect in every way in his first life because yes he was good and so very very good and had the best intentions and saved the others not just because he wanted to but because that was what was good and right.

That was never his fatal flaw though his hubris was that he convinced himself he had to do it all ALONE. That instead of talking to the people who cared about him and working with them, he thought he had to do it alone because he does have a hero complex in that he thinks everything will be fine as long as he's the only one getting hurt. That, combined with the other political machinations, is what led to his downfall. Not his arrogance or his actions, but that he refused to share any of the burden with others.

It's why he and JGY are such excellent foils for each other because as WWX pre resurrection became more and more isolated we saw jgy's social connection and standing get stronger. Then, after the resurrection we see that jgy is almost on his own whole wwx gets the support he needed and actually takes it this time.

Because in his second life he survived because he followed lwj, because he let him help him. They turned the tide of the second siege at burial mounds because the juniors amd the wen remnants helped them, because lwj was there. They took down jgy why because nhs got involved and had witnesses. And guanyin temple succeeded because they all were there not because wwx is a God who never makes mistakes

In his second life he learned he can rely on others and let them help him. That he doesn't have to be alone. That's his character development and without it he'd have never survived

Wei WuXian suddenly murmured, '… Lan Zhan.'

He reached out and grabbed one of Lan WangJi’s sleeves. Lan WangJi had always been beside him. He immediately bent down and whispered, 'I am here.

A voice inside of him said, If he catches me, I'll...

He wasn't scared of falling. All these years, he'd fallen many times. If someone was finally there to catch him, it'd be more than wonderful. Hearing Wei WuXian thank him, Lan WangJi's body seemed to freeze for a second. The hand that was about to be laid on Wei WuXian's back paused before it returned. After a moment of silence, Lan WangJi responded, "You are welcome."

Don't take the lessons he learned away from him. Don't make him have to be alone again

Do you know what always really gets me every time I read it? During the second siege of the Burial Mounds, when the poor old corpse of Granny Wen makes her appearance...

The figure was smaller than the others and stood hunched over. There was a gaping hole in its skull, suggesting it had been bludgeoned to death. Soaking in the bloody water had left its sparse white hair stuck to its forehead, and with its skin and flesh half decayed on top of that, it was a repulsive, terrifying, and uncomfortable sight to behold.

I know that most of us will agree the first siege was totally horrifying and completely unjustified - after all WWX only fought each time because he was defending himself. But come on?! How can any cultivator even justify hitting a defenceless old lady with such force that they smashed a massive hole in her head?! Which utterly disgusting creep did that!?

I've seen a few people defending the siege in the past, for some bizarre reason, mostly in an attempt to justify JCs actions at leading the whole thing. But seriously, someone caved that woman's head in and then unceremoniously threw all of their corpses into the blood pool!

And even after all of that, whatever remained of the murdered Wen remnants managed to muster up the remaining strength they had left and save not only WWX, LWJ and the juniors, but even some of the people who killed them and disrespected their dead bodies so brutally, many years ago.

Yet some people in the fandom still call WWX the "bad guy" during his reluctantly titled YLLZ era, when he was literally a radish farmer living on a desolate mountain, playing with a toddler and keeping innocent people safe. Oooo what a diabolical man he was *shakes fist *

Though they convince him to return to Yiling, a siege is still being planned against him and the Wens. Despite all their efforts, it seems as if the heavens are against them, and nothing they can do will be able to change their fates. Kay's comments: Karmiya delivering another amazing Burial Mounds era canon-divergence and I am so excited to see where this story is going but also so scared, because Wei Wuxian's canonical death is tagged and approaching fast, but! Wangxian get together early and managed to talk some things through and Jiang Yanli lives and saves A-Yuan and Wen-popo! Oh, so excited what happens now that Lan Wangji is at the Burial Mounds in time for the siege... Excerpt: There's a shout, and Wei Wuxian suddenly springs up, striding towards the horse. Lan Wangji grabs him by the arm, trying to hold him back, and Wei Wuxian snarls, a dark expression on his face which she's never seen before. "Lan Wangji, let me go. I don't want to fight you, but if you insist on this, I-" He freezes, something dark and lost crosses his face. "I..." Jiang Yanli struggles to her feet, finding that her muscles all ache, but she stumbles through it, approaching them and grabbing Wei Wuxian's other arm herself. "A-Xian, please. If you go there...if you go there... I think they'll kill you. Please go back to Yiling. I can't...I can't bear anyone else dying, A-Xian. Please." Wei Wuxian's face softens, but he doesn't relent. "Shijie, I have to. If the sects follow through and attack us, the Wens will all die. What about them? I already failed Wen Ning and Wen Qing. I can't-" "If you die at Nightless City, you will not help them," Lan Wangji interrupts. "What other choice do I have?" Wei Wuxian snaps at him. "Maybe it's easy for you to judge me, Lan-er-gongzi, but I have never had any other choices than the ones I've made!" He tries to pull away again, and though Lan Wangji's grip loosens, Jiang Yanli does not let go. She clings to Wei Wuxian's arm, stumbling along with him as he tries to reach his horse. "A-Xian! If you go...if you go, I'll follow you. Every step of the way." He won't even look at her, just stares resolutely forward, but she speaks to his back, praying that her words reach him. "I won't let go, A-Xian."

Okay, so I’m writing this fic of the first siege at the Burial Mounds (yes, it is hurting my soul to write 😭) but I gotta ask, cause read the book and watched the donghua, but none of these are very specific (unless I’m completely missing it)

Did the siege happened right after the nightless city massacre?

I just need double confirmation cause, I had this thought of… the siege happening close to A-Yuan’s birthday. Why, you may ask, well cause in my mind, wwx killed a lot of cultivators, a looooot, so the clans had to need some time to rebuild their army, right? That could’ve taken from weeks to months.

Not to mention the clan leaders regaining strength, the the Jiangs mourning over JYL passing away. They needed time to strategize and plan out how to get rid of wwx.

I know LWJ was hiding wwx in a cave fir two days after the nightless city massacre, and I know he dragged his injured self to the BM after he got the news of wwx’s passing. Even if it was a month after, he was still in rough and horrendous condition. I bet it still felt like he got the whipping just the day before.

I want to use this for this fic, but I also want to stay to canon as much as I can. I dunno, any insights?

Overall Warnings (will be updated if i notice one that i didn't list along the way): -WWX is a corpse which means corpse-like things will probably be described at times. I'm not sure if i will, but i'm putting this here for a warning. -Less of a warning more of a statement: There will not be any corpse "spice." (aka🔞) so don't expect any. Corpses/Fierce corpses canonically cause corpse poisoning and he's not in the condition for it. mainly tho, i personally don't want to add it here. -Graphic depictions of injury (and maybe scars in the future, not sure yet).

Lan Wangji stumbled through the streets of Yiling, leaning heavily on his sword as he did. Wei Wuxian couldn’t be dead. There was just no way. He was strong, he was the Yiling Laozu, Wei Ying…!

He collapsed unexpectedly to his knees on the empty streets and grimaced, and only then did he take a moment to endure a moment’s rest. He was so, so tired…thankful at least that he wouldn’t be bothered as long as his brother didn’t find out he’d slipped away from Gusu or someone didn’t leave their home at the wrong time. Leaving at night was a bane and a boon all at the same time.

The cold, sticky feeling of blood rubbed against his back as he breathed, the bandages now itchy and uncomfortable from the repeated motions and tearing of his wounds.

The sound of low, raspy humming in a familiar tune took his attention away, lifting his head to gaze into the nearby forest. “Wei Ying?”

Following his siren song, Lan Wangji shook as he brought himself to his feet. He grimaced in pain, taking a few shallow breaths but never able to breathe too deeply lest a fresh wave of pain wrack up his spine. The ache in his back forced him to stop routinely, but he couldn’t give up now… The melody was so close.

He pushed forward, stumbling into dense foliage and pushing it aside with more effort than was usually necessary. “Wei Ying…?” His body froze, pupils shrinking in shock.

Sitting upright against a tree in the distance was a corpse holding a young child, and not just any corpse and child. It was Wei Wuxian with Wen Yuan. Calmly drifting around the corpse was a thick resentment, moving like a living thing protecting its young, twirling and drifting languidly to the melody. The moment the two were stumbled upon though, the humming came to an abrupt halt and the resentment curled around the two protectively.

Despite Wei Wuxian not turning his head nearly as quickly as he usually would to figure out who had stumbled upon them, the resentment reared itself almost like a feral animal in defense, giving the two a wide berth from the Lan as he stumbled back a couple steps and grimaced painfully.

“...Wei Ying…A-Yuan?” Lan Wangji managed, his heart throbbing painfully at the sight.

He was too late.

A calm seemed to come to the resentment, but Lan Wangji didn’t notice. He fell to his knees and held a hand to his face, body shaking as he no longer felt the determination to support his weight.

The quiet sound of shuffling robes and uneven footsteps passed the jade’s ears unheard, that is until he heard the thud of a body falling in front of him. He lifted his head, blurry vision meeting the dark figure before him. Wei Wuxian had approached and fell to his knees before him, his face uncharacteristically expressionless and eyes a ghostly white, but…something soft was there. Worried. It was like…

“Lan…Zhan…”

Lan Wangji stiffened, eyes wide as the corpse of his friend lifted his hand to wipe away the tears on his face in very slow movements. Despite having little to no motor control, Wei Wuxian was conscious.

“Wei Ying??” Lan Wangji brought his hands up to the other’s face, eyebrows furrowed by the lack of change. Wei Wuxian’s lip twitched and his eyes might have squinted slightly, but it was nothing like the bright face he’d once known. Something told Lan Wangji though that despite his condition, the other was still able to feel and see the things he used to at some level- just with a stiff, painless body.

“Mnh…it’s…Wei Ying.” His voice was crackly, deep, and slow. Kind of like he had to think about what he needed to say before it exited his mouth. He pulled away though when Wen Yuan shifted in his arms, leaning his head down to nuzzle against the nervous toddler. “Little…radish. protect…”

Lan Wangji nodded. “You…you did so well, Wei Ying. Really…” He strained not to cry again, but let out a shuddering breath instead. “We should take you somewhere safe…if someone sees either of you, you’ll be in danger…”

“I won’t…go to Gusu…” Wei Wuxian pulled the boy closer, his eyes managing to narrow some while his resentment swirled around him in agitation.

“I won’t make you…let’s go somewhere else, just anywhere out of sight…” Lan Wangji pursed his lips and furrowed his brow as he struggled to get up, trying to renew his vigor to move, however Wei Wuxian reached up slowly to hold onto the others clothes with a hand. The motion wasn’t forceful at all, not that Wei Wuxian could be forceful. It seemed most of his power laid in the resentment circling his body now.

“Rest first…” Wei Wuxian slowly let go of the other’s clothes as the man settled back down, face pale in his strain. “What…happened?”

“...” Lan Wangji frowned, averting his eyes slightly. “It’s not important. Your safety…we should prioritize.”

“I’m fine…” The corpse sat back on the ground with a thump, eyelashes lowering to the boy playing with his ribbon. He seemed to be processing something, but eventually dropped the thought, lifting his glazed eyes back up to the injured man. “Lan…Zhan. Should…go home.”

Lan Wangji shook his head. “I won’t go. Not until you’re somewhere safe.”

“Nowhere safe.” Wei Wuxian spoke in low tones, slowly adjusting his arms to hold Wen Yuan against his shoulder. “I'll… protect.”

Lan Wangji’s heart broke further if possible, pursing his lips in an attempt to stifle any more tears. “Let me help you. Please, Wei Ying…”

“You’re hurt.”

“…”

“I might…be dead,” Lan Wangji flinched subtly at the words the corpse utters. “But…not stupid.” The face Lan Wangji makes has Wei Wuxian amend his words slightly after some quiet thought. “...after we hide…you go…recover.”

Lan Wangji nodded slightly, though his head felt like lead.

re: the post about women disciples. there are a pretty fair number of them with the nie bros at the victory banquet (in fact the first disciple in line *right* behind them is a lady who makes a pretty priceless :| expression during the greeting of jin guangshan), so that further muddies the question of how prominent they are. is it because the nie are more egalitarian *right at the moment* as a result of having to recruit during the war? or is it something else?

This made me go back and screencap that scene because I NEED to see the Nie women, it is IMPERATIVE, and in the process found that ALL the sects have women present.

The Lan!

The already-mentioned Jiang! (whose disciples are making the exact "ew" faces the rest of us would be making in that situation)

And finally, the Nie, going :| as promised (in tandem with NHS, no less!)

I am also including this wide shot of the whole group because I noticed two wonderful things:

1.) THE NIE WOMEN ARE SO TINY. THEY ARE SHORTER THAN HUAISANG EVEN. BLESS.

2.) Those are the same uniforms worn by the disciples lined up behind NHS at Hostage Summer Camp, which means that NHS's own sect disciples didn't even bat an eye at him fainting and being carried away by guards, which in turn suggests that NHS "faints" to get out of unwanted situations so regularly that they're desensitized to it.

I wanna know what all these ladies are up to the rest of the story, because we never see them again except for a handful of women at the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds. I hope they're having a cool time.

Down memory lane

"Lan Zhan, do you want to know how I actually died?"

Lan Wangji drops his chopsticks right onto the floor, the question shocking him out of the placid tiredness of a long day travelling.

They've been passing through towns and villages in their seemingly forever honeymoon, but, as the anniversary of the First Siege and Yiling Patriarch's death approaches, whispers, rumors and trashtalk have become louder and increasingly frequent.

People bring up the terrible monster living in the Burial Mounds, make up outlandish stories about imagined crimes, and debate on how he died - though all agree it was gruesome and deserved.

They're in an inn now, at the edge of a picturesque village near the sea coast, enjoying local dishes and wine, in a secluded corner of the establishment's dining area. But though they've deliberately chosen to sit as far away from the crowd as possible, conversation drifts through the air like the aroma of freshly cooked meals and words of insult and curses reach their ears nevertheless.

"Wei Ying..." Lan Wangji speaks, struggling to break througu his stupor, "You do not need to-"

"I know, I just want to." A small smile. "You've asked me before, and I didn't tell you - but we've agreed there are no secrets between us, right?"

"Wei Ying, this is not a secret-"

"I blew myself up."

Silence befalls them both. Lan Wangji finds himself unable to name what he's feeling, a whirlwind of emotion stirring within him. Wei Wuxian does not seem affected, gazing out the window at the starry sky.

His tone had been casual, as if the words he's just said do not hold much weight, as if it is normal, expected, for him to say them.

I blew myself up.

Lan Wangji has always wondered whether Wei Wuxian really died devoured by corpses and resentful energy, he who had so much control over them.

He has always had some doubts, but the thought of his beloved taking his own life hurt too much to ponder. For Lan Wangji too, the hypothesis the rumors presented was easier to swallow than the truth.

"You could have stopped it." He finally says, realization slowly dawning on him like a soft blanket of cold, icy snow.

"I could." Wei Wuxian responds, closing his eyes briefly before turning towards Lan Wangji, "But I had no reason to. There was no more room in the world for me."

"There has always been room in the world for you, Wei Ying." And Lan Wangji reaches across the table to take his husband's hand in his, both to comfort Wei Ying and ground his own spiralling fears.

Wei Wuxian's eyes widen for a moment, shining under the soft candlelight, before a beautiful, warm smile settles on his features. "I know you said not to, but thank you - for making room in the world for me."

There is a slight tremble to Lan Wangji's hand as he caresses Wei Wuxian's knuckles.

"...and also thank you for giving me a room literally because I'm broke as hell, I could never afford an inn!"

Laughter is pulled out of Lan Wangji before he can stop it and Wei Wuxian can only wish he's forever able to hear the melodious sound of it.
