Download it, read it, play it, give it to your friends, upload it somewhere else, do whatever with it, it’s shareware. It’s a free demo that you can send or put wherever you want.

All of this is free, and we’re giving it out to promote the full version, going to Kickstarter in early 2024.

Free Games Alert!
That's right! It's time! I've got 3 FREE games for you today. Find them all at https://open-story-games.itch.io/ or click the images to go directly to the game! All of these games were part of the Artistree collaborative art project for Fieldmoot, a conference for Christian creatives that is live online this weekend! Many thanks to Elizabeth W. and Heidi K. for being such engaging collaborators.
Tumblr media
First up is Mini Mushroom Hideout, the cutest foraging game for all ages!
Roll some dice, color your mushrooms, and describe your hideout, cottagecore blanket fort, or adventurer headquarters as it grows and changes!
Play collaboratively, or compete to see who gets all their mushrooms first. But whatever you do, laugh lots and share good stories. :)
Inspired by miniatures created by Heidi K.
Tumblr media
By the Book is a more traditional TTRPG, complete with fantasy vibes and epic quests!
Work together to complete the quest given to you by a magical book at the beginning of the adventure. Use cards to generate that quest and the encounters that follow.
A highly flexible, rules-lite game, By the Book is designed to adapt to your experience and interests! New players and GMs can jump in without taking themselves too seriously, and there are tips to help keep things moving.
Best for grownups or kids who can sit still for a little longer (ages 7+ is a good starting point). Inspired by miniatures created by Heidi K.
Tumblr media
Invitation is another coloring game, but with a greater focus on exploring the image than the story!
Grab some art supplies and experiment with pattern, color, and/or texture as you fill in the white spaces in Elizabeth W.'s stunning linocut image!

One thing that I've noticed about Baldur's Gate 3 is that sometimes it really does feel like your companions are being piloted by other players. Sure, there's the standard approval system that most CRPGs have nowadays, but there is an even more powerful mechanic at play here: giving the player the option to shut the fuck up.
There are tons of moments when your companions are forced to confront parts of their past they can't shake. You always have the option to speak up for them if you like, but most times you also have the option to say nothing (sometimes the prompt is literally "say nothing," sometimes it's "let [character] handle this."
And this is such an important tactic of playing at the table: turning the spotlight onto to another player and letting them handle it. Because the story isn't just about your player character, it's about all of you.
When you do choose that option, I've noticed more often than not that the character approves of you letting them take the wheel. When you try to speak up for them, they may not express disapproval, but it comes up in the fiction. I tried to defend Astarion once and an NPC was like, "You're letting swine speak for you now?" and Astarion shouted, "I don't need anyone to speak for me!" He's right! This is his moment! Why did I say anything?
Baldur's Gate doesn't have to do this! There's no actual person piloting your companions. And in games a lot of people will say it's usually best practice to keep the spotlight on the players. But BG3 is a video game based on a tabletop game, and I think this is one of the main differences between the two. Maybe it's a tiny detail, but giving the player the option to relinquish the spotlight (and oftentimes encouraging and rewarding it) is such an incredible detail, and faithful to the medium the game is trying to emulate.
It's also a great lesson for everyone who wants to be a good player at the table: if it's not your scene, consider shutting up and letting the spotlit player handle it.

Massive TTRPG Bundle: Games for Gaza
Games for Gaza, an Itch megabundle raising funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians, is now live! It features 256 games from 140 creators, including over 190 TTRPGs and 40 video games (and more)! Just a $10 USD minimum!
Check it out HERE!
Tumblr media
A Sunless Space, my micro-TTRPG inspired by Andor, is included as are loads more thematically appropriate games of pushing back against the endless encroach of empire.
Other TTRPG highlights (for me): Beam Saber, i'm sorry did you say street magic, The Ground Itself, Anamesis, Monster Care Squad, Cybermetal 2012, and Apocalypse Frame. These are just the bigger/more well known ones, but there's so much variety and lots I'm excited to dig into!
Tumblr media
The bundle will be available for a little under two weeks and all proceeds are going directly to Medical Aid for Palestinians. It's been great to have a very, very small part in this and do something, anything, in the face of such reckless hate. Go get it if you can, spread the word, and do whatever you can in your sphere of the influence to aid the cause.
Once again, you can find the bundle HERE.

VAST Guides are here!
By using VAST, you can learn how to add accessibility tags for screen readers to your PDFs, by using Adobe InDesign and Adobe Acrobat.
I'm super excited to release a brand new publishing community resource: VAST (or Visual Accessibility Skills Toolkit).
VAST is a collection of short articles aiming to spread awareness about what visual impairments are, and how folks in the small press industry can accommodate them.
The guides are split into four sections:
Visual Impairment 101 explores what visual impairments are, how visually impaired people navigate digital content, and introduces some current language and definitions (circa 2023).
Screen reading PDFs explores the basics of how screen readers navigate through digital content. Includes video examples!
Using InDesign introduces different tools that designers can use to make their documents more accessible.
Putting Into Practice presents case studies of common structures in roleplaying games, and how they could be given accessibility tags using tools covered in section 3. (Coming soon!)
Tumblr media
VAST was developed by Brian Tyrrell (me!), and disability advocate and accessibility consultant Yubi Coates. Visually impaired consultants and InDesign experts were brought in to corroborate the guides.
All of the information in the guides is up to date, and we’re committed to reviewing and updating the guides in 2024 and 2025.
This project was completed using a small pot of funding provided by Creative Scotland’s Create: Inclusion program in 2022.

DnD players be like, "I don't get the point of solo ttrpgs" and then spend an entire afternoon crafting their ideal Loxodon Barbarian grappler complete with a fully fleshed-out backstory and NPC connections, who will never see an actual table because there is no plan in their rpg circle for a new DnD game and this like their 10th character they're adding to a library of unplayed PCs.

Vote on How You Want the First Chapter of the Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy Rulebook to be Structured.
Tumblr media
We have recently finally finished fully copy-editing the first chapter of the Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy rulebook, and have also redone its structure. We will be redoing the structure of each chater as we finish fully copy-editing them. (Also we moved the Skills section down to the Character Creation chapter.)
This chapter contains all of the core game rules except for combat, as well as the “gameplay philosophy” of Eureka, and is about 115 pages before formatting. (Every chapter is going to be way fewer pages when we actually format it to look like a TTRPG rulebook and not a big text document.)
The core rules are, obviously, core rules. They tell you what dice to roll, what the numbers mean, what succeeds and what fails, etc.
The “gameplay philosophy” sections tell you what kind of “philosophy” the actual rules and mechanics for Eureka were written based on, and therefore how to approach it for the best possible experience. This section tells you what we had in mind when we wrote the rules, gives guidelines on how a GM should run Eureka, what kind of PCs players should make, how both players and GMs should approach the game, what kind of situations should call for dice rolls and why or why not, how to handle PC mortality, etc.
It is my opinion that the “gameplay philosophy” sections should come first in this chapter, and then the core rules come second, and my reasoning is that the way Eureka wants to be approached is actually quite different from a lot of the current dominant TTRPG zeitgeist, and I think that reading and understanding how Eureka’s “philosophy” differs from most more popular “philosophies” on TTRPGs will be helpful in internalizing why some rules are written the way they are and how this is supposed to work in practice when you then read the core rules. I also feel that reading the core rules before you read the “gameplay philosophy” sections will have them memorizing internalizing Eureka’s rules through the lens of Current Most Popular TTRPG, which may cause some core rules to come off as off-putting, bizarre, or stupid—or even just not work in practice because their intent runs counter to the intent of superficially-similar rules in Current Most Popular TTRPG.
However, many people express that they hate it when a TTRPG rulebook buries the introduction of the core rules like 30-60+ pages into the rulebook, and some have said that putting these “gameplay philosophy” sections up front may turn off would-be fans.
So, I’m asking the fans to vote. You’ve heard my arguments for why I want to put the “gameplay philosophy” parts first, so what do you think? Vote in this poll.
Here is how the first chapter is currently structured, with the "gameplay philosophy" parts coming first:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Do also keep in mind that the Eureka rulebook includes a “What You Need To Read” section that tells you the bare minimum sections to read in order of importance in case you just want to jump straight into playing without reading the entire 300+ page book cover-to-cover first. It also includes the "Quick Terms" section at the top that gives one-paragraph explanations of almost all of the core concepts, including how to roll what dice and how to define success and failure before you read anything else.)
Because I feel quite strongly about this, and it’s my rulebook, I may still put the “gameplay philosophy” sections first even if putting the core rules first wins by a small majority. If it wins by a very large majority, then I’ll listen to overwhelming fan preference and put the core rules first, but I might not be happy about it.
Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is going to launch on Kickstarter on April 10th and we need all the help we can get. Set a reminder from the Kickstarter page through this link.

You've heard of Monster Care Squad, of course, the TTRPG where you play as unstoppably cool elite veterinarians traveling a world unlike any fantasy land you've set foot in? The one that's about investigating a mysterious sickness that sends the guardians of this world berserk? It's the one with dozens and dozens of unique towns and magical creatures, illustrated by @leafie-draws? It's like pacifist and communal and all about those small stories but with a big actiony set piece? It's the one with the space station and the lil goat with opposable thumbs Anyway, it's free, right here https://monstercaresquad.web.app/

[ID: a banner for a game. it is light tan with a crumpled paper texture, and reads "with breath & sword" in large blue font, and "a solo-journaling game that helps you fight anxiety as you fight monster" below it in smaller font. there is lineart of gauntlets lying over a sword with some flowers at the bottom. end ID]
You find yourself tied to the monsters. The scratchy feeling in your chest. The way your hands tremble. The sweat that dots your upper lip when your senses are telling you a monster is close, again, now, and it’s your job to fight it. To stand up for your ideals and stand up to the threat. Whether you tame it, or this is truly a monster that needs to be slain, only time will tell.
You know you will succeed. You always have before. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be a challenge.
Grab your gear. Put on your boots. You know how to find it. You know what to do.
First, you just need to steady yourself.
Tumblr media
[ID: a page spread from the game. it shows "step four" on one side, which goes over the five aspects of the game's oracle. on the other side it shows the first oracle component, where something you can taste determines what your heroic core is. the page is minimally designed, with a blue border and text on a white background, tan accents, and one image of a dragon. end ID]
With Breath & Sword is a solo-journaling TTRPG to help players combat anxiety.
In the game, you play as a monster-fighter, who is being summoned once again due to the presence of a new monster. Each time a monster appears, you struggle with the emotional effects of the magic: effects that look a lot like anxiety. You must steady yourself before you go off to fight: in the game and in real life.
Over the course of WB&S, players will participate in grounding methods and breathing techniques to calm themselves from an anxiety attack. These methods also serve as the game's oracle in order to determine how the story goes.
What You'll Need:
A safe space to play
A method of writing or recording
Tumblr media
[ID: a page spread from the game. it is the section called "the science" and goes over the psychology behind the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique, the 4-7-8 breathing method, and destroying journaling. it has a few lines about narrative and play therapy, and that the creator of the game used these methods in his social work with neurodivergent teens and adults. end ID]
check out the game on itch now!!
