Has anyone discussed the weird orientalism in the way the Middle Kingdom owls are portrayed

#guardians of ga'hoole #gog #don’t get me wrong but I highly appreciate the way Lasky handles topics like book banning/fascism/cults etc. #but the way the Middle Kingdom is written gives me whiplash lmao #it could have been a good chance to introduce some owl species native only to Asia and a good way for the Guardians to realize that there’s #so much of the world they don’t know about #but then it’s like 1) they’re exactly the same species but inexplicably blue #2) they seemingly only exist there because Theo of the northern kingdoms settled there #and 3) half of them. are descended from/reincarnations of demons that owls do not see as deserving of things #me when I read too deeply into a children’s series lol

Headcannon time: earthspark Thundercracker wrote this universe's version of popular fantasy magic school book series that's relatively popular among kids but also has been banned because there's people out there who firmly believe it has magic spells in it and that it's written by a Transformer who's sneaking into Transformer values into his books.

It's also a movie series and has a lot of merch associated with it. Maybe Nightshade and Hashtag gets into it, though Nightshade is into the book version and Hashtag is into the movie version.

So basically NiGHTS is watering themself down so they dont scare Helen and Will?

A little bit! Tbh they do that for most of the Dreamers they run into given that they're a Nightmaren to start with. Will and Helen get a bit more of NiGHTS' actual personality than the average Dreamer because of the whole helping them beat up Wizeman (and helping them deal with some of their siblings) thing, but they're also like. Twelve. And not all twelve year olds are quite able to process the kind of stuff NiGHTS went through without potentially winding up with a little trauma.

Elliot and Claris are basically the only humans around currently that get the full "I am a nightmare monster and that is okay but can we pause this conversation for like two seconds I'm hungry and the Nightopians around here taste like smores" experience.

(In hindsight, NiGHTS more or less lightly customer services at people. You'd think with as long as I've worked in retail I'd have realized I was doing that by this point lol)

I don't know who asked me this, but they asked whether I had ever read a book that traumatised me, and I don't think I've ever read anything that left a very deep impression on me, or at least I don't remember, but then I thought of Owls of Ga'Hoole, that I read when I was like 13 and how the main character basically gets kidnapped into a cult and all the kids have to like march and repeat their name so that it loses its meaning and now that I think of it, that was mad fucked up

#I literally have no idea whether I'm remembering it right #I actually never got to finish the books #I think I stopped at book 3 or 4 because after that the library was closed for a while and when it reopened the entire series was gone #Like there was one book maybe book 10 that was still there #I remember because I looked for all the books and put them together and literally no one else touched them #Like you ever go to your library and get books that you think look interesting but you can't borrow more than one book so you hide it #Like in a corner so if they really wanted to they could find it but usually they didn't #Anyway I haven't gone to my school library in a while because I've read all the books I found interesting and I'm not real adventurous #Also I have way too many things to read at the moment #But man I miss sitting with a pile of interesting books and just reading all of them #I miss going to libraries #sweetmountainseeds #owls of ga'hoole #I wonder if there's a fandom on here #books

just got struck by the memory that not only did i read the main percy jackson series during the summer when i was 11 (sea of monsters in one day) then i also proceeded to reread them in 7th grade but lie to my friends that it was my first time reading them for some reason

#i read Dozens of books those two years too so they didnt take me the full like school year #i read a series of unfortunate events and twilight in 6th grade and then gaurdians of ga'hoole in 7th grade i think only up to like book 6? #whichever one where they go to the like winter island but i lost interest in that one #that was in 7th grade and i read some of the narnia ones as well #i also unfortunately reread harry potter which technically it was read to me the first time but still #and then through highschool i read a lot #and this was also like during class and i still got decent grades #now ive been ahdjkd only Slowly back into reading but ive read a lot this year that im proud of #i read a lot of heavy long books though so rereading PJO has been a palate clenser #and hopefully hoo will get me back into bigger books #pjo has so far taken me like #a month for each book and im on book 3 so hopefully ill be on hoo by the end of the year but the last olympians a bit longer so im not sure #its not that it talk me a lot to read the books because i finished the last 10 chapters of sea of monsters in like 3 hours its more i only #really get time to read at night when going to bed and im bad about going to bed earlier and i usually can only read for a bit before its #light out #OH i also read hunger games all of it somewhere in that time period #i think christmas just before the movie came out #so that was probably early 7th grade but i could be wrong #times a fuck but i did read a lot #sorry for the tags infodump idk how else to talk about reading ahdkdk
