my favorite thing about the guardians of the galaxy is how they are all, every single one of them, stupid. there's no character that has to be reasonable and smart 100% of the time, they all get their dumbass moments. they are each of them a moron (and more than that, they are also each so many other things at the same time)

Peter Quill x Reader
**
**
There was a dull ache in your side as you threw a knife at the alien. It's neon orange skin being slit open gracefully.
You were quickly tackled by- what the hell.
It was peter.
"What the fuck," you hiss, rolling out from underneath him. The faint scent of his shampoo and leather entering your system.
"He was gonna shoot you, babe," he says kissing your forehead, then your nose, an finally your lips.
"I wouldn't even be fighting if you hadn't stolen that stupid- what even is that thing," you yell, slashing another alien across the throat, and kicking out it's knees.
Peter grabs your hand as you both run to the ship. Dodging enemy blasts, and that one came from rocket, "I'm on your side, trash panda," you yell at him. Pete Snickers at your remark.
You hop into the pilots seat, "No I'm driving, don't even fucking try Star-lord," you put additional emphasis on his made up name.
He pouts and sits next to you. You hear a faint explosion, rocket must be fixing a gadget or making another bomb out of your hot tools.
"Baby," Peter drawls out, "I said I'm sorry,"
"No you actually didn't,"
"Okay, well fine if your going to be difficult, I'm sorry, I love you,"
"I love you to asshole,"
You take the jet through a few quick jumps before you start floating at a steady pace.
You leave to go your quarters, a hand stops you- Mantis, "You are not mad, you are feeling in love and,-" you quickly cut her off," Unless you care to find out how far I can shove my foot up your ass, you better not finish that thought,"
Quill start laughing, mantis gives you a terrified look and drops your hand.
"Why would you want to shove your foot up her ass," Drax questions.
**
You and Peter lie awake in his bed.
"I'm sorry," he says for the millionth time. His warm figure pressed into your smaller frame. Enveloping you in his warmth.
"I'm over it, and I love that shampoo," you reply, taking in a deep whiff of the spicy forest type scent.
It was perfectly complimenting to your signature scent, applewood and vanilla.
"I like the way you smell," he replies hand snaking around your waist. He places a few sloppy kisses on your neck.

After watching GOTG 2 again I am struck by how it IS possible to kill a beloved character in a meaningful and hard-hitting way
Yondu was my favourite trashbag pirate dad. Like, it 100% made me sad to see him go, and I'm so tired of the 'death as redemption' trope that I immediately wrote a dozen fix-it fics.
But narratively? It was perfect.
It was a big character moment that brought his arc together. A guy who hid all his fear and trauma behind this act of being the biggest toughest badass around, who pretended he didn't care about anyone but himself, was finally fucking honest about his love for his son and had a really soft, touching, heartfelt moment where he was trying to comfort him while he died.
It was a horrific situation with no other way out. Yondu and Peter had to choose one of them to die, and of course Yondu chose himself, not his kid. It didn't feel contrived, or like a disservice to the characters' intelligence. There really was no other option.
It was dramatic. It was heart-rending. It felt impactful, not least because the film ended with a massive funeral where Yondu's whole adopted family (who Yondu thought he'd pushed away and who hated him forever) showed up to say goodbye.
We had Peter resolving to be a better parental figure to Groot while listening to the music Yondu left him. We had Rocket reflecting on his big 'I see you, you're me' moment with Yondu. We had Peter telling Rocket the Guardians will always love him, even if he - like Yondu - does that Typical Abused Kid Thing and pushes the boundaries of everyone who cares for him to test when they'll snap. We had poor widower Kraglin inheriting Yondu's arrow (and absolutely sucking ass at using it, lmao). Hell, we even had Gamora and Nebula sharing that beautiful, awkward, unpracticed hug.
In short, it was so much better than A Certain Other Death, and rewatching made me grateful for how it was handled

Just a few things I loved in GOTG3
The way Gamora and Nebula grunt at eachother as a greeting  The way Groot, Mantis and Peter all ask “Did that look cool?”  Mantis saying she wont use her powers to manipulate the feelings of friends but doesn’t think twice to make Drax forget she admitted she thinks he’s stupid. Gamora holding people hostage is her thing Nebula enjoying a soda pop (this just seemed so pure)
The way Batch 89 does not shame each other at any moment and just have nothing but love for each other
Adam’s love for Blurp
Drax’s self proclamation of being Peter’s #1 Best Friend and no one confirming or denying it each time
The badass fight scene with the Hellspawn that just made everyone look so cool and working together while also showcasing each character's unique fighting style
Groot pulling a ton of guns out of himself and going berserker
Kaiju Groot
Counter Earth being stuck in the 1980s
Just every dang line out of Baby Rocket, all the little grammatical errors and how sweet and hopeful he was
Peter the overshare-er
Nebs
Groot being concerned over all the Guardians, worried about Peter, checking on and comforting Drax, Watching over Rocket
The way Peter’s voice squeaks when Nebula tells him she didn’t tell him he was in contact with Gamora because she didn’t want him to get all freaked out
Drax getting peer pressured by kids to finally dance
Peter helping Rocket save a zoo’s worth of animals just because it was important to Rocket
“The Creation of Adam”

GOTG SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT!
HOLY SHIT NOBODY DIED
Rocket's past was so fucked up, like worse than I anticipated
His acceptance of being a raccoon was both touching and badass, he finally learned to love himself <3
I loved the friendships here, everyone clearly cared about each other and it was really sweet
Seriously, nobody fucking died. How did this happen? I went in there expecting my faves to die and came out without a single death
I'm happy but still in disbelief
I LOATHED the High Evolutionary I'm so glad they jumped his ass
I liked past!Gamora, she definitely warmed up to the others but also didn't leave her family with the Ravagers
Groot was really cool in this one, lots of fun uses of his powers
Drax started off somewhat lacking but his dad arc was very nice
Mantis honey I'll miss you :'(
Nebula didn't have an arc so much as solidify her character development, I liked it but most of her growth was getting used to the other guardians
Aside from her bestieeeeeee seriously I loved her friendship with Rocket so much
Speaking of friendship with Rocket, I wish Quill had a heart-to-heart with him at some point, but their friendship was still evident from how they acted toward each other
Quill leaving for Earth was a bit sad but it died in well with the theme of not running from who you are
And of accepting both loss and its possibility
God this movie explains "Everybody's got dead people" SO PAINFULLY
Anyway Rocket leading the gotg is neat, hope this sparks a return-to-DnA for him in the comics after the current dogshit run
Okay I do wish Adam had gotten to do more but he was still really fun and I'm excited for more

why I'm unhappy with secret invasion: an accidental essay that turned out WAY more aggressive than I wanted it to (sorry about that)
I'm furious about how Secret Invasion is going. It feels like Marvel just went ahead with a Samuel L. Jackson vanity project, but and it's barely interesting and it's fucking with canon characterization. And it's fucking Secret Invasion! This could be meaningful! But instead it feels like it's trying to redo what TFATWS already did and did better. We already HAD a show about a global terrorist movement and the evils of white privilege, and it was actually really good, so what is this show supposed to be again? Oh. I see. It's different because Nick Fury is in it. Gotcha.
Oh, and [spoilers for ep 1 and 2]
They killed Maria Hill in the first episode. Not only did they kill her (which is bad enough from this studio, considering they've also killed Gamora, Natasha, and Wanda), but they fridged her. And not even kind-of-fridged, like with the aforementioned characters, where the death was required and mostly reasonable by in-universe circumstances, even if it was an easy out. No. Maria was literally, actually, to-the-letter fridged. They even confirm that in the dialogue of the second episode. Fury actually says that Gravik killed her to hurt him. She didn't have to die -- hell, if she wasn't going to be relevant to the rest of the show, she didn't even need to be in it in the first place! (More on that in a minute.)
And the thing is. The thing is. I would be so much happier with the show if the roles were reversed. Canon Fury is all "I still believe in heroes! There's good in people! Befriend the aliens!" He's a badass spymaster, yeah, sure, but he's also pretty optimistic about people. And then there's Maria Hill.
Tumblr media
[Image description: Maria Hill, saying "Best advice you'll ever get from me, a dedicated law enforcement officer, to you, an amateur looking to go pro: 'Assume everyone is a broken, nightmare, garbage person and then be pleasantly surprised if it ends up not the case.' It'll save you a lifetime of disappointments."] [Image credits: Bendis and Pichelli's Spider-Man #12 (2017)]
That seems to have carried over into the MCU fairly well. And to see her? Struggling to fulfill Fury's goal after his death, operating without her mentor for the first time, trying to figure out how to reconcile his faith in the Skrulls with her natural instinct that everyone is lying all the time? To see her actually doing the work, speaking to the security committee and telling them to piss off, because Fury was in Moscow to do a hero's work and he died a hero, no further questions? To see her, the character who has long been reduced to the sidekick of male characters with a much shorter stint in Marvel's canon, fully come into her own as the protagonist of this series? It would have been perfect. We could have actually gotten a show full of espionage and intrigue instead of a hamfisted... racism metaphor? I'm not even sure at this point. This could have actually been something besides a Samuel L. Jackson vanity project. I know I said that already, but I am going to say it again. This show is here so Jackson can look cool and badass and also be a funny old man. And I wouldn't care if they weren't reducing every other meaningful character in the series to a Skrull, a corpse, or a realpolitik adversary. Like, fuck this false advertising. Maria Hill, Everett Ross, and Rhodey were all in the trailer like they were going to be relevant. As if this was going to be an interesting web of an ensemble cast. Instead, it's the Nick Fury show with a few redeeming scenes from the terrifyingly cheery British spymaster lady.
It's almost like Marvel knew no one would want to watch the show if they just straight-up said it was going to be all Nick Fury. And I haven't even started on the bullshit that was the train conversation (a whole monologue about sitting in the colored section on trains and then straight-up telling Talos there's not enough room for his people on the train? Was I the only one thrown off by that?) or the dialogue between him and Rhodey in the bar ("even when I'm out, I'm in.") or the Skrull wife reveal (which felt like it wanted to be some big important twist but it also had exactly zero setup) or... whatever is happening with Talos and Gaea. The next episode comes out in two days, and I'm still crossing my fingers that a miracle of plot will happen and it will get better. But it's going to take a miracle.

Being Star Lord’s daughter
Pairings: Star Lord x daughter!reader
Requested by: @callmescott777 Hello there! Sorry to bother you but I just saw that you write for the Guardians of the Galaxy, and I was wondering if you could write something like “Being Starlords Daughter ” headcanons. I was wanting to see how he’d be as a dad and how the guardians/yondo would be with her. (Something kinda similar to what you did with “Being Logan’s daughter”) Have a nice rest of your day!! :]
Warnings: mention of character death, mention of injuries, mention off weapons, mention of depression
A/N OMG, thanks for the request personally I love Star Lord as a character and love gotg and I really enjoyed writing this. I do really hope you like this, I wrote it as soon as I saw it, which was like 6 in the morning right after I woke up :)
I might add something later to this but for now I won’t if I don’t come up with something that really needs to be in it
so sorry if something doesn’t really seem right, will go through all of this later when I’m not so tired <3
Tumblr media
Okay so he’s not the most serious father, like have you seen how he acts a lot of times, (not serious) but that might be the fact that he hide everything behind humor. But still he’s not the most serious father. Don’t get me wrong though he can be serious if he needs too, when it comes to you
As his mother died I believe that Peter is rather protective, he doesn’t want to lose someone again, especially not a family member
Stealing his jet boot attachments and playing around with them — leading to you getting hurt and an angry dad who’s patching you up
He won’t admit it but he was a bit proud after you stole your first thing (Yondu and Rocket were really proud and showed it too)
On the note of stealing you took his guns on various of occasion — your father isn’t too happy about that either
As well as stealing things with Rocket — you once stole Bucky’s arm, though you had to give it back eventually to him — thank your father for that
When you were little you used to take his jackets and walk around in Milano while the Jacket was on you — the jacket swallowed your whole body and it dragged behind you — though your father couldn’t be too mad about as he thought it adorable — he does have a picture of it
Cuddles with your father whenever you can’t sleep
He gave you your own jacket which you adore (it looks like his jacket) you have both a short and a long one (a coat) and you love both equally
Bedtime stories included those few earth bedtime stories that he still remembered or got the book of, otherwise he just came up with something on the spot
Having the same taste in music
So you always steal his Walkman and headphones
Not going to school but being kinda homeschooled by your family
As a teenager you rebelled a lot just to annoy your father, he always forgave you for whatever you do, except that one time you accidentally made a hole in Milano
When you drank for the first time everyone was a bit mad because you had snuck out to do it, you weren’t shit-faced-drunk just a bit tipsy and you accidentally fell asleep on the floor
If you two want a tattoo you would definitely have matching ones, which showed how close you are
Gamora would be the one to teach you how to fight, with or without Peter’s permission, while your dad taught you how to shoot with guns and fly with his jet boots attachments
Rocket would teach you about explosives
Yondu proably taught you how to steal things
However when it came to being taught to fly Milano you didn’t want anyone other than you dad to teach you
I feel like Gamora would easily fall into the line of a mother, we all know how she is like a mother to baby groot (while the others are like fathers/uncles) so I do truly believe that she’d fall in the mother category, or like a badass aunt (mostly mother as she’s in a relationship with Peter)
Gamora is the responsible adult of the group, always making sure you actually take care of yourself (as Peter isn’t too good at it)
Rocket would be like the cool irresponsible uncle or brother, mostly uncle.
Rocket would always get you into stealing things with him, you know when he stole this batteries (forgot their actual name will look it up later) in the first scenes of the second gotg movie, well you helped steal those — your father wasn’t too much of a fan about that
You are the only one actually allowed to pet him (when you were litte that was) because you always thought his fur was soft and you enjoyed petting him, he would never admit it but it is kinda relaxing whenever you pet him on the head, however he hated it every time you dragged his tail when you were a child
Groot would definitely be like a brother, especially after the first guardian of the galaxy movie, you know when he’s baby groot and teenage groot.
You and Groot would often play video games together, not stopping even when your father tells you to stop playing for a moment
Groot gifts you flowers whenever you are sad, which always cheers you up a bit
Drax is definitely an uncle. Though sometimes he acts like a father, after all he did once have a daughter
He once tried to teach you how to be invisible, I can say it never worked
Yondu is the badass cool uncle everyone wants (damn you have a lot of uncles),
when you were a kid Yondu used to make his arrow go around in your room creating different shapes to get you to sleep
He’d never admit it but he does love you, and if anything happened to you he’d kill whoever hurt you (if it isn’t one of the guardians bc he knew you’d never forgive him for that)
On the matter of people getting hurt, your dad would do anything to stop you from hurting (except to kill you if you hurt from dying, he’d never be able to do that) he’d kill anyone that gave you an injury
If anyone nearly kills you they get an instant death
Boyfriend/Girlfriends or whatever you want is okay for your dad, he knows he can’t stop you but he does have the rule that as soon as they hurt you or tries something you don’t want to do, you need to go and tell him so that he can help you get away from them (without causing too many enemies, might end with one or two persons killed but oh well)
On that note he doesn’t care what your sexuality is, after all he is bisexual himself
But don’t get me wrong about his overprotective mess you are the same way towards him. When he met his father Ego you were as skeptic as him to begin with and it continued throughout the whole visit, after all your grandfather left your fathers family before why should he come back now if all times?
Your grandfather tried to get you over to his side as well, you did have some of that power in which Peter also had but he only wanted you on his side because he knew that would turn Peter over to his side, however it didn’t go to well you only hated him more because he wanted to use you to gain your fathers trust
Thinking Peter died at the end of the second gotg was the worst thing possible
But hearing that Yondu died broke your heart, he was one of the people you had grown up with and he was your cool badass uncle/grandfather, you never “replaced” him that’s for sure
Gamora’s death broke you even more than Yondu’s death, you lost a mother that day and you could never replace that, it wasn’t the same after that and it seemed a lot more dull in life, you went into slight depressive episode from time to time afterwards
Meeting Nebula for the first time involved a lot of drama
Meeting Thor was a lot of drama as well
Being friends with Peter Parker
Being friends with Shuri who helped you build your own jet boots (your father was slightly jealous as your are better than his)
You didn’t get dusted so when your father came back you were older and he was really sad that he missed five terrible years of your life, because she knew it would of been better if he was with you
Helping take the power stone together with Nebula and Rhodey included laughing at your fathers dance
Being so happy you nearly exploded when your family came back from the blip, you had your father back, and all your uncles/aunts/brothers
Overall you are a family made up of a bunch of idiots a-holes to say it by the first movies words
+ if you ever doubt yourself your father will always make sure you know he’s there and he will always say some inspiring words — kinda like on the gif at the beginning of this fic.

My Personal Favorite Rocket-Centered Media
Rocket Raccoon (2014) — 11 Issues
The one that began the Rocket Renaissance. I don’t recommend reading this one first right off the bat, if only because I think it has a cooler effect if you read the comic after Rocket’s more somber stories, but it is totally a must-read. Rocket has been many different people in many different ways, but it’s important to remember his roots. (He’s so 2014 in this, and the art-style will totally take you out if that’s your type of thing. I know it’s mine.)
Tumblr media
Rocket Raccoon (2016) — 5 Issues
Rocket’s been through a whole lot of shit up until this point, but being stranded on Earth is the cherry on top. His first solo-story, where his grand Rocket-esque, State-of-Liberty-destroying journey is narrated through absolutely gorgeous illustrations that get him so well. The story is fantastic as well, and maybe not-so-subtlety + amazingly takes a dump on America, sending an important message in general.
If you need further convincing, Rocket runs around in his underwear for about two issues. It’s hilarious. Check it out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rocket (2017) — 6 Issues
His second solo-story.
One of my absolute personal favorites that left me completely shaken by the time I was done with it. I can’t even really begin to describe it without getting too deep into how fucking insane it made me feel.
If you’re into gritty heist/crime sci-fi plots with a healthy amount of crisp, absurdist humor, you’re in luck. If you totally hate that, you’d probably still like it.
Rocket just has that effect on people.
But seriously, go in completely blind and read this. You won’t regret it.
If you need further convincing, yes, this is the one where he dons the infamous Stinger Suit you might’ve seen before on that one puzzle. He does fill out that suit nicely (not a reference).
If you need context, Rocket takes hiatus from the Guardians and gets tangled up in a whole bunch of shit he didn’t sign up for. He’s a bit of a pathetic meow meow. Totally worth. Also, one of the best styles for Rocket, ever.
Tumblr media
Guardians of Infinity (2016) — 8 Issues
A really, really cool comic that starts off with Rocket being Rocket, “saving the galaxy” through… materialistic means. His team then runs into another team, who runs into another team. After an obligatory fight, they all find out they’re Guardians of the Galaxy groups from different time-frames.
Then the Collectors swoops in and plans to do something unsavory to our favorite raccoon! Oh no! :D
Really though, the writing for this story is phenomenal, and Rocket’s character is done so well. I love the way he’s portrayed in this one. So badass. So smug.
The comic also features one-shot stories that are a blast as well. He’s so silly. Go check it out.

GotG: Rocket and Groot Steal The Galaxy! (Prose Novel) by Dan Abnett
Guardians of The Galaxy: Collect Them All (Prose Novel) by Corinne Duyvis
Onto the novels that ripped my heart out.
Holy shit. If you’re. Well. Genuinely, right away, these two books are a work of art.
I don’t even know where to begin, but I just have to say that Rocket Man by David Bowie started playing over the radio as I finished Rocket and Groot: Steal the Galaxy and I felt something, like, stirring within my soul. I felt devastatingly. Something.
These two:
1. Are so, so criminally underrated and deserve fame. The amount of fucking heart put into these works are tangible with every word.
2. Deserve their own reviews, but I can’t even really begin to express how important they are to me.
So I’m just going to write their synopsis’s.
Steal the Galaxy!
A raccoon and a tree walk into a bar. The universe almost collapses into a Capitalist Armageddon. C-3PO stars as our narrator and MC. Rocket may or may not need a therapist. Groot is badass as fuck.
…Disguise sequence.
Gamora is also there. Hi, Gamora :3
Collect Them All!
How found and family can a found family get? Do people ask that question? If you have ever found yourself asking that question, and if you’ve ever breathed, read this novel.
A book about Acceptance and Love and all of that stuff. Which is honestly such a challenge to fathom sometimes, much less write about, but I suppose the Guardians always get it right.
Both of these books also certifiably and perfectly capture each character. If Vol. 3 left a big, gaping hole in your heart, this might help you or possibly make it worse. In a good way, of course.
If you don’t read anything else, if you haven’t even picked up a book in years, if you call yourself a GotG fan: read these novels. You don’t even have to know one thing about these characters to feel attachment by the time the journey is over. It’s a threat and a promise.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (Game, 2021)
I asked, how can found family can a found family get???
Some-fucking-how, GotG just. Defies all odds every single time . !
Please for the love of god, if you haven’t played this game, play it.
The tragedy that is the fact it was criminally overshadowed at the time of its release is just terrible. It’s genuinely, outside of my obsession, one of the best times I’ve ever had playing a video game in a long while. And it’s on sale often. Just experience it for yourself. It’s something so incredibly special.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2013), specifically #20-23
Venom attaches himself to Rocket and it’s fucking awesome. Also, I love the art-style he had under Valerio Schiti. He always got him right.
Tumblr media
———
Get your hands on the comics however you desire, but the method to reading the novels for free is on Archive.org (where you can borrow books). Just be cautious, as only one person can borrow a book at a given time.

Thoughts on GOTG V3!!!
Bro I’m surprised I didn’t cry like a baby during this there were so many emotional moments.
Thoughts below (spoilers I guess)
———-
First things first I’m so glad that everyone got to go off on their own to find themselves
Quill and his grandpa is extremely heartwarming
Gamora and the scavengers is adorable they love her like a little sister
Mantis an the tentacle guys were adorable she’s such a sweetheart I love her
I AM A MANTIS LOVER
Fucking loved it when she screamed “dickhead” at nebula
Her and Drax are those annoying siblings that you can’t help but adore
Nebula is the wine aunt I don’t care
She truly does love them and it shows
Groot being sand wood/driftwood at the end is so sweet he’s fully evolved
Quill and gamora 😭 it was so sad but sweet
“This you isn’t so bad”
I WAS SOBBING MY EYES HE FINALLY ADMITS TO HIMSELF HE NEEDS TO MOVE ON

Gamora just being at badass bitch
Her and Nebula doing the sibling grunt and nod thing at each other 🥺
ROCKET FUCKING RACOOOON
Lyla, Teefs and Floor my beloveds you deserved so much more then what you got
They were so innocent and I hate that fucking purple head with a passion
The little nudge Lyla gives Rocket before telling him “it’s not your time” she wants him to be happy in the future
“It’s always been your story”
That cut me like a fucking knife
Didn’t cry but inside I was mentally sobbing
“You were meant to be a dad”

I just came back from gotg vol 3 and I'm very emotional about it. I'm gonna put my thoughts right under the line - SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
[THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING!!!! MASSIVE STORY SPOILERS RIGHT AFTER THE CUT!!!]
first things first; i am so fucking happy rocket doesn't die. as a matter of fact; no one dies! that makes my suffering heart so much lighter.
some of my highlights; - the banter between kraglin and cosmo (my heart yearned for this) - NEBULA GETTING EMOTINAL WITH ALL THE CHILDREN!! - also drax full on dad mode! <3 <3 - mantis being the shining beacon of hope; I love my happy girl. <3 - gamora being badass af; man I love her. - ROCKET SAVING ALL THE ANIMALS!!! - the collector was there too! - adam warlock *I am looking respectfully* - it wasn't a slapstick comedy movie. (yeah, it was funny, but in the actual fitting scenes) - ROCKET FUCKING RACOON!
basically all things ROCKET! he's so brave and he's been through so much trauma and suffering and he's in pain. but he's healing from it. he saved all of them, but mostly he saved himself. I love him so much - he's my favourite out of all guardians <3
[I might actually start reading his comics now]
james gunn was able to make me cry - in a cinema; with other people present. I will forever hate him for this. he made me feel things. a lot of things and I'm still emotional (even after taking an hour to write on this and forming my thoughts into words and not just incoherent screaming.)
in summary - the best marvel movie since guardians of the galaxy vol. 2 <3

While I really love the MCU Guardians of the Galaxy, I really wish they specifically didn't have so much synergy with their comics counterparts. Obviously Bendis' habit of bringing in random Earth characters didn't help, but the team dynamic in almost every run but Ewing's has been just a worse version of the films'. Gunn's changes aren't bad for the movies' sake, but when they try and make the established 616 gotg act like them it just comes off as weird, and for some reason we're still doing it in the year of our lord 2023. I just wish the MCU didn't have such a profound impact on the comics so we could've had two very different but well-written versions of the team.
Synergy hit the Guardians harder than any other characters and it was inevitably going to happen even if Gunn wasn't involved because the moment Feige wanted to do a GotG movie the comic Editors wanted to make the characters more audience friendly and basically tasked Bendis (who really didn't want to do it and had to be convinced to, which also explains why his run is so bad) to be the person to do t.
Even though Bendis has admitted that beyond reading Clarmeont and Byrne's Star-Lord he really didn't read or care much about the other characters. he was going to reinvent them and the plan from what I could tell was to synergize the movie with his own comic. But it's really that. Most writers that got involved with the Guardians really DGAF about them or just don't know what the hell to do with them. After the first movie came out you could told most just copied what Gunn did with them in the MCU. Problem with that is that no one is as good as James Gunn at doing his brand of humor, no one saw past the comedy aspect and reduced them to just jokes. Drax always took everything literally and couldn't understand metaphors or figure of speech. Gamora was always a flawless stoic badass. Rocket was angry 24/7. Groot had no personality. Peter Quill was a manchild that everyone disrespected and ridiculed.
This was especially bad during the period between vol.1 and vol.2 where everything was just a repeat of the plot in the first GotG movie. Guardians don't get along, Guardians find an ancient powerful Mcguffin, Guardians have to fight bad guy who wants the Mcguffin, Guardians have to band together and get along in order to defeat the bad guy. If they fought a bad guy it was usually Korath, Nebula, Ronan, or the Chitauri.
The GotG cartoon was notorious for this, and when it started bringing out non-MCU stuff it was things from the Bendis run and it's why you had multiples episodes with Asgardian and Symbiote related plotlines.
I also get the feeling that a lot of the writers that handle the Guardians don't really care about them as characters nor about their history. The current GotG writers for example feel like they really care more about writing a space western than really writing a Guardians story. The Guardians in the comic just feel like Guardians in name only.

Unfortunately, great Tony stuff often seem to come at the expensive of other characters. 2-4 isn't such a great episode for Valkyrie and Gamora.
Both characters end up undergoing what basically amounts to "The character path they already traveled in the original films they came from, except Tony gets to take all the credit for their growth and development." He gives them both pep talks and they immediately change into their heroic versions.
At least Val gets to kill the Grandmaster so that's neat.
Gamora, meanwhile, barely gets to do anything at all. She gets utterly screwed. Story of her life; She is perpetually cast as a character who is exceptionally badass but never in a way that influences the plot. Her biggest moment is single-handedly breaking out of Grandmaster's inescapable prison and nearly assassinating him, only to be promptly recaptured and reimprisoned so the story can move on like none of that even happened.
Her apotheosis comes when Tony tells her to betray her dad and she decides he's right, so she clears an obstacle out of Tony's path that was only put there five seconds ago so that Gamora would have something to do.
The MCU has never had any solid ideas for what to do with this character, outside of being Nebula's sister and Nebula's path to redemption. This episode is no exception. In an episode whose specific function was to explain where the badass Gamora from the previous season finale came from, Gamora is more or less superfluous to the story.
You had one job, 2-4, but you were too busy having fun with Tony instead.

I wish so many "badass women" characters didn't need to have "was horribly abused" as a character trait in order to make them "hard" you know? Someone did point out that at least Gamora was a fully formed character before this so at least we are using it post creation instead of having it be like out first look at the character is her getting assaulted.
