Because of the mess that Duolingo turned out to be, I checked out a recommended app (list of recommendations here.)

I tried Busuu today and it’s great!

It actually uses the language skill levels of A1/ A2/ B1/ B2 that are used to compare language proficiency.

The assessment test was swift and didn’t feel pressuring, you can actually re-do the assessment for a language you already started whenever you feel like it!

However, one major point of critique (which is actually about accessibility): you can not turn off speaking exercises in Busuu. You can only repeatedly click “skip” whenever they pop up. But you can not just say “I don’t want/ can’t do speaking exercise at all.” And the same goes for listening exercises but worse because you can’t even skip those within your regular exercises/ lessons!

Disclaimer: I am not Deaf/ deaf nor mute. To me these things are annoyances more than actual accessibility issues but it does make Busuu feel rather inaccessible. Sometimes I just don’t want to deal with listening exercises. And I generally don’t like speaking “on command” or vocally replying to prompts. But, again, for me these are preferences.

I know speaking and listening exercises are important to achieve an actual comprehension for a language and I recognise avoiding speaking/ listening might slow down my progression in my chosen languages of study. I recognise that I need to and do consume media where I need to listen to the languages I’m learning.

To other people, it is an actual problem of accessibility that you can not universally turn off speaking/ listening exercises in Busuu.

I just figured this might be an issue people will inevitably notice now that we are changing away from Duolingo in droves and someone had to make a post about it.

fellows on langblr, does anyone else have the issue of knowing words when they’re spoken/when you read them in your TL, but can’t recall them when you want to use them???

i have this issue with korean and spanish which is my main problem when i go to speak them or when writing (also why i haven’t been blogging in spanish or korean)

is it just a me problem or is it normal???

Hey I’ve been thinking of learning Japanese actually!! The only language I’ve learned besides English though is Spanish (and a little Dutch) and I’m intimidated by Japanese’s writing system and the fact I’ve heard it’s “tonal”? So your meaning can change based on your tone? Which sucks for me personally because I’m not very good at controlling my tone of voice (it’s the Autism). Sorry for the long ask, I was just wondering your thoughts on it? :)

yeah it is! but most people will know what you mean based on context. That scared me too when I was learning but. We focused on learning the language and writing and. Slowly focsued on tonal pronunciation.

The best way to learn tonal stuff is to talk to natives, and listen to native speakers and just. Pick up from that.

It's, IMO, not a huge worry because yes it is tonal but even if you're off it's really obvious what you mean by context cules.

The first two alphabets are super easy you can learn them no problem. The difference....eh they’re both used learn hiragana first it’s the most used. Katakana is kinda used for emphasis and loan words, usually english loan words.

Kanji is the monster, borrowed from chinese, it’s life long learning. But you can do it if you put in the effort!

Good luck in leaning Japanese! Duolingo is....not bad it's really not great. Don't let duolingo be your only learning source. Let me give some advice for the apps I use to study.

-You can use duolingo but a lot of the times it butches how to read kanji bc kanji can be read multiple ways

good apps and websites I use:

-wanikani (Is free unti level 10. Website only)

-Shirabe jisho (best up to date app dictionary)

-https://jisho.org/ great online dictionary

-bunpo (for grammar. some of it is free but need to pay for full acess. worth it imo its only 20$)

-lirer (companion app to bunpo. It's vocab studying baby. Same deal.)

-quizlet lets you make your own study cards for free online. has an app

-hinative lets you communicate w native speakers. I havent tried this one yet but it was suggested to me.

-hello talk lets you talk to native speakers. I have tried this one very helpful. You can voice talk too but i'm too nervous for that.

主菜 vs. 主食 / Main Dish vs. Main Food

主菜 / zhǔ cài / main dish or course

主食 / zhǔ shí / main food

So what's the difference?

主菜 is equivalent to the western word for "main course" as opposed to side dishes (小菜). However, 主食 is something else entirely! Translated directly as "main food" this isn't about the specific dish itself, but rather the actual individual food (not dish) in the meal that has the most substance/carbs. For most Chinese meals, this means noodles, rice, or some type of bread.

The example from Yoyo Chinese was that they had ordered a whole bunch of 荤菜 meat dishes (shrimp, beef, and 小笼包) and one 素菜 vegetable dish (tofu), and then their 主食 main food was 粽子 (sticky rice balls) since sticky rice is super filling and carb-heavy.

Note that this video took place during 端午节 Dragon Boat Festival, so 粽子 probably isn't a typical choice for 主食 year-round and is mostly eaten around this holiday

How I immerse myself in Korean and Spanish

한국어 (Korean)

I think I’m doing so good in Korean because I’m constantly watching things in Korean and exposing myself to the language.

1. K-pop

I’m such a big K-pop fan and it really helps my learning process. If I didn’t enjoy K-pop I don’t think Id be able to comprehend half of what I can today.

I watch a lot of “vlogs” from my favorite idols. (My fav to watch are LE SSERAFIM’s vlogs, they’re just really easy for me to understand and entertaining at the same time).

ATEEZ is always doing something and they’re my ult group so I’m just constantly watching them. Recently though I haven’t been watching their stuff so I have a lot to catch up on 😅

The music makes no sense to me because obviously song lyrics aren’t written in conversational everyday Korean so I don’t even really count that as listening comprehension. Every now and then I’ll catch a word I know and get shocked though 🙏

I used to watch V-lives or whatever they’re called now a lot but I can’t focus for that long anymore. (박성화 has the best lego lives)

2. K-Dramas

I don’t watch as many dramas as some people but I feel like they’ve definitely helped me get used to listening to Korean.

I try not to take any phrases or vocab from dramas because it’s a drama… and they’re dramatic 😭

I started watching Business Proposal like a month ago but I got distracted with exams and I stopped watching it with 2 episodes left… (SPOILERS: istg if 하리 and 태무 don’t stay together I’m giving up on everything)

3. Korean Cartoons

I LOVE Learn Korean with Jadoo. I barely understand any of it but it’s helped me a lot with understanding how certain grammar points are used and how certain words are used.

I also like watching Peppa Pig in Korean because the episodes are short and sweet and they’re relatively easy to understand.

I used to watch We Bare Bears in Korean but I watched like every episode they had on YouTube so now I’m rewatching in Spanish. (I genuinely love We Bare Bears, it’s always been the best cartoon out there)

4. Korean News

I like to read a lot of Korean news to help with pronunciation and reading comprehension. It also allows me to find some more specific vocabulary that I would use in describing what I do, what I like, and what I want to do in my future because I can find real stories that are specific to my interests.

5. ASMR

Soy ASMR and Seonghwas ASMR videos have been single-handedly holding my life up. Judy ASMR is also a really good creator. I like to watch like roleplay ASMR like “friend does your makeup for a party” or whatever because it exposes me to more casual vocabulary.

Español (Spanish)

1. Classes

I do take Spanish classes at school so I get over and hour of Spanish immersion in while at school everyday. We mainly use Spanish in the classroom.

2. Spanish Documentaries

I’m a bit more advanced in Spanish than I am in Korean so I prefer to watch Documentaries as to cartoons.

Documentaries also interest me more than cartoons in some aspects like learning more about different latin cultures, hearing different accents and dialects, and learning about how other people live.

3. Cartoons

I only really watch We Bare Bears in Spanish because I just like the show, but sometimes Spanish feels like a chore to me or like I’m just learning it to pass a class at this point, so cartoons are a good way to just casually comprehend the language.

4. Spanish News

I found this really good Spanish news for kids website and it’s so incredibly helpful. I’m in the process of making a “Spanish Resources” blog post like I did with Korean so I’ll definitely link that there.

I read the articles out loud to help get more comfortable with speaking, reading and my pronunciation.

They also have a podcast that’s just like a read aloud of the article so after I read the article, I go and listen to the podcast.

The topics are really interesting, too. Like one of them was about this lady bringing her pet pig to the airport to help calm people down??? I wanna go pet a pig wdym????

6. Spanish music

There are no words in the English language to express how much I love Spanish music.

It’s literally just so beautiful.

In class we have broken down various songs, so I can understand music very easily unlike in Korean even if I have to think about the lyrics for a bit.

7. Spanish YouTube videos/ASMR

I watch a lot of “un día en mi vida” type videos and I love ASMR so I watch a lot of those. 🙏

I know I'm posting/reblogging a lot today, but since I'm taking a break from discord, I have a lot of thoughts and no one to ramble to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Something on my mind is that, I tend to forget how hard it is to learn another language

It completely slips my mind that people don't know other languages or have enough focus to learn it

Of course I'm not fluent in any language other than english, which my english is terrible due to my lack of vocabulary (I nearly failed english classes multiple times due to this)

But with school classes and annoying Duolingo, I know the basics of French, Spanish, Russian, and bit of Japanese

However, I cannot understand Latin it is the death of me I DO NOT UNDERSTAND LATIN

Something interesting about learning languages is that its the same for each one

I struggle to understand or speak French vocally, but I can read it pretty easy. Spanish I can understand both vocally and written, but tend to make my head hurt trying to mentally translate it as half of my school speaks Spanish

Russian, due to having a different alphabet, I struggle to read but can easily understand vocally. Probably helps that compared to other langauges, I get the most exposure to it outside of school due to my love for Russian songs! While French and Spanish I learned inside school. (French class WAS TERRIBLE, but Spanish class was more enjoyable but less practice with words)

If I wasn't a high school senior, I could've taken Russian class too, I wonder how that would've went

Anyways sorry for the long ramble, just people keep saying they're impressed at my knowledge and I need to remind myself "oh yeah what I am doing IS COOL and not basic skills"
