It always takes me so long to read your chapters and write these and stuff not because of the length of your chapters (i love long chapters) but because i always try to process every single little thing because its so good and a lot of the stuff doesnt even make it into the list because i dont know how to put it into words and thats how i feel about the dynamic youve created around zuko and sokka. Like how you took Sokkas canon traits and magnified them to accommodate the traits zuko got threw taob perfectly and theres something so artistic about it and i wish i had the words to better explain how in awe of you i am every time i read a new chapter.

Oh jeez now he’s hallucinating

I love Zi Se. Having Zuko take care of a small child is such a unique thing to have in a fic and you make it work so well. Every scene between them is immaculate

The way you portray trauma is incredible. The ‘two steps forwards one step back’ ness of it, and the way different peoples traumas rub against eachother and the lashing out and guilt and stuff its really so good.

I think its funny to think about external zuko in taob. Like a wet dog growling at everyone and pushing itself into a corner. A little tragic, a little pathetic. And then in his head he’s having some of the most profound, angsty thoughts. And the transition between those scenes is also entertaining.

I also really like the dynamic Zuko has with the entirety of the gang. Like it’s not just sokka going ‘i can fix him’ and doing it, its a group effort and the different peoples individual traits work well with helping different parts of zuko heal. When he needs sternness and bluntness, theres sokka, when he needs something more gentle, theres tomnook, and when he needs something in between theres katara.

I saw your authors notes that was like ‘i’m writing another zukka fic!’ and i was so confused for a moment and i was like ‘wtf is she talking about’ and then it was like ‘you can read it here!’ and i was like ;holy shit its already posted!? Why didnt she tell tumblr about this and then i was like ‘oh shes talking about tams.’ i forgot it was a zukka fic.

That took me 3 hours.

Im in a class this semester that deals with analyzing literature and reading a lot of like ‘classic’ books. And the entire time im reading these books some that are considered to be from some of the best authors of all time is that im comparing them to the things youve written and when ive said that your such a talented writer before, i dont know how much ground ive had to stand on but now that i have like a (very small) reference point for that stuff, holy shit you are such a talented writer.

Like i know its not your major and that youve never studied it and stuff and the fact that you can produce all of that based on pure talent is honestly incredible. Im constantly in awe every time i read anything of yours its insane. I really do hope your as proud as you can be of yourself, you deserve it.

Drarry for Beginners: Creature fics

Vampire

In The Red by @bixgirl1 (2018, E, 45k)

When Harry goes looking for a vampire at a Creature club, the second-to-last thing Harry expects is to find Malfoy working there. The last thing he expects is to fall in love with him.

There’s no better word to describe this fic than luscious. Get your body ready for a gorgeous, sexy and bittersweet love story. @bixgirl1 is hands down one of the most talented Drarry authors out there and what she did with the vampire trope here is just amazing. The plot combines complex characters, interesting lore and the most satisfying combo of fast sexual burn and slow emotional development. The chemistry between Draco and Harry is off the charts - complicated sexual tension, confident badass characters and fabulous dialogue balancing the dirtiest talk with the softest yearning. The scenes involving blood drinking are striking and made me salivate despite the fact that I’ve never really cared about this trope in general - that’s how captivating this fic is! And Harry’s arc is so amazing, I really like the final twist that puts him and Draco on a more equal footing. The exquisite narrative, clever plot and sexy times are the perfect way to get seduced into this trope. Come and bask in this juicy and decadent atmosphere!

Veela

Soup-pocalypse and The Great Curry Cataclysm by SquadOfCats (2018, E, 104k)

Eleven years after the war, Draco Malfoy leads a quiet, boring, and perfectly respectable life, thanks very much. Or, at least he does, until a sudden and very unexpected veela awakening causes him to throw soup all over Harry Potter in the middle of the Ministry cafeteria.

I chose this fic early on and kept questioning myself because there are so many great Veela fics out there; but seeing now how most of my other picks are more on the angst side, I’m really happy with my choice as I think it will be quite the refreshing ride. There’s no doubt among Drarry fans that this is one of the greatest, funniest, most endearing Veela stories out there. By the time it was published I wasn’t really into this trope anymore but it still manages to pull me back whenever I need a light-hearted, comforting love story to unwind. Draco’s voice is hysterical and such a joy to read - he’s panicked, chaotic devotion and Harry and I can’t help but find it so charming. The food courting is definitely the highlight here, creative and really fun to read despite Draco’s utter humiliation and Harry’s confused resistance. Then again this is a 100k fic and I love how the author took the time to not only develop their single arcs and relationship, but also to shine light on amazing side characters like Lavender, Teddy, Mipsy. All interactions are great and help creating such lovely “found family” vibes, with a nice twist away from the fuck-or-die scenario I usually see for this trope. Here all characters are given room to struggle with their post-war traumas and grow in the most thoughtful and cathartic way, and I really appreciate it!

Werewolf

Who we are in the shadows by @quicksilvermaid (2019, E, 99k)

What happens when you’re forced to become the very thing you despise? Ex-Auror Harry Potter, tossed out of the Ministry for something he had no control over, has been looking for a way back to his former life. When he comes across Draco Malfoy in the criminal underbelly of Wizarding London and in need of protection, Harry figures bringing him in to face the Ministry's justice is his ticket back to everything he's lost.

I know I’m not speaking only for myself when I say that this is THE werewolf fic. This glorious masterpiece is what finally pulled me back into Drarry last year, when I was 100% dedicated to another fandom. My jaw literally dropped as I watched in awe the brilliant and intriguing plot revealing itself - there’s a dark and mysterious investigation, breathtaking sexual tension and Harry’s devastating inner battle towards self-forgiveness, healing and acceptance. His loyalty towards Teddy is so touching it broke my heart a bit. It’s fascinating to notice how these boys ooze competence on the job while struggling under the surface. The possessive pining and scorching hot smut are a fantastic bonus and set the perfect mood for this fic, intense, hungry and captivating. Draco is a brilliant and interesting character; his arc and career choice are one of my fave takes since reading “The Boy Who Only Lived Twice” by lettered, which tells you just how genius this is. A deliciously mature and atmospheric healing story, with a gorgeous ending full of hope and understanding. I’d give anything to obliviate myself and experience it for the first time once again 💗

Bonus

There Is Always the Moon by @firethesound (2016, T, 159k)

Draco's life after the war is everything he wanted it to be: it's simple, and quiet, and predictable, and safe. But when a mysterious curse shatters the peace he'd worked so hard to build, there's only one person he can trust to help him. After all, Harry Potter has saved his life before. Now Draco has to believe that Potter will be able to do it one more time. (A remix of If the Sun Goes Black by pasdexcuses)

If fake dating doesn’t come with this glorious amount of world building and an intriguing mystery, what is even the point? I’m not big on creature fics but wow, @firethesound creates a gripping and lovely universe that worms its way inside your heart. This is A+++ storytelling with charming mundane moments, the slowest of burns and a carefully crafted, detailed plot. I love how the initial slice of life becomes a case fic mixed with sweet pining and domesticity. Their voices are fantastic and it’s a delight to follow sassy Harry and oblivious Draco pulling off a fake dating heist while investigating the mystery haunting Draco’s life. We see how their relationship matures over time, the slow realization of changing feelings, the doubts and heartbreak and wonder of being loved in return. Their married life is tender and soft, and my favorite bits are the small things: their birthday gifts to each other, the contingency plans and all the meta jokes such as Draco not speaking French for once lol. This story takes a bittersweet turn towards the end so brace yourself for some angsty times - I promise a worthy ride and a hopeful ending!

a post-ch2 fic that i guess could be classified as fix-it, BUT with some very interesting twists. they beat the clown, everyone lives, but no one really gets the tropey happy ending. the WIP sequel is also incredible and i live for the updates.

the greater fool series by mischiefmanager, mostly rated T with some E

this is a series i’ll reread a lot bc it’s so fucking good. follows young reddie into early adulthood, mostly a bunch of cute shit where they figure out themselves and their relationship. also contains the single best teen reddie fic in existence, he came in through the window, but reading the whole series is a must

brokeback derry and everything else by Amuly, rated E

27 years in between, richie and eddie reconnect in their 20s and meet back up in derry twice a year to remember and love each other before going back to their lives and forgetting. so much pain. there’s a lot of sweet stuff in there, but you can see shit’s gonna get complicated from miles away and the anticipation almost gave me stomach ulcers (in a good way). ultimate angst with a happy ending.

speaking of angst with a happy ending...Martian AU!!!!! this one fucked me up in the best way, i literally called my roommate at 2am to vent to her about my emotions after reading it. i go back and reread chapter 8 just to be overwhelmed by it, and it makes me cry every time. plus, there are awesome sequels/companion pieces in the series! read this, i beg you!

walk through fire for you by hyruling, rated T

unwind after all that angst with some cute, drunk, confused eddie being very upset when he finds out richie is engaged. richie only teases him a little before pointing out the matching ring on eddie’s finger.

richie and eddie meet on grindr in the 27 years between and hey, whadda ya know, they fall in love! i really love this fic but i’m pretty sure it’s been abandoned. i’ve had it open on my phone browser for like 3 months with no update but i still check it regularly bc i’m pathetic and this fic is just so good i’m DYING to know what happens next so read at ur own risk

a strange sense of familiarity [WIP] by Katranga, rated E

another “they meet and fall in love without remembering” fic, and even though it’s not complete yet, it gets regular updates. oh, also, i’m obsessed with it. they’re long distance fuck buddies who can’t admit they’re in love, and then they get hit with the childhood memories! and everyone lives! what’s not to love! also PLEASE read kisses take like mint and every other reddie work by this author, they are all fantastic

adult friends by sudowoodo, rated T

AU where adult reddie meet at a first aid seminar for work (immediately fall in love), become friends, become best friends, and finally get to be happy. has some super repressed eddie and intensely pining richie, which is always fun, and genuinely made me laugh out loud. also please check out this author’s other reddie fics, there’s some super sweet kid reddie in there that really warms the heart

the mind's a funny fruit by joldiego, rated T

eddie wakes up barely alive in derry, has 0 memory, calls himself richie, and moves in with some lesbians. an absolute must read that ought to be on every reddie fic rec compilation. i read this a long time ago and just thinking about it makes me want to read it again.

now what i'm gonna say may sound indelicate [WIP] by IfItHollers, rated E

it took me entirely too long to find this fic since i joined the fandom, and it’s truly a fucking masterpiece. it’s almost at 200k now and still unfinished, and the slow burn is excruciating, but this is a legendary fic for a reason. eddie spends the first chunk of this fic in the hospital recovering from the massive chest wound, and then he and richie move the recovery to ben’s cabin in the woods. the author’s notes for each chapter are a story in themselves

signs of a new lifetime by swordfishtrombones, rated T

one of the sweetest, most romantic reddie fics i’ve ever read. a fresh take on a classic concept: post-ch2, they’re in love, they haven’t said/done anything about it yet, BUT!!! it’s not angsty! they are all cute and giggly like “you say it first!” “no, you say it first!” and it makes me fucking MELT

broadcasting tower by swordfishtrombones, rated E

back-to-back recs from the same author! bc i love these fics so much! sort of similar to the last one in that they both know what’s up and just haven’t said it, but this one’s got the angst! i didn’t know when i read it that it was the same author as the other fic, and i thought how funny, i found another reddie author that perfectly captures this pair in such a wonderfully romantic way! i also just noticed there’s a follow up to this so now i have to go read that immediately

eurydice; the original comeback kid by Vulcanodon, rated M

for the love of god please read this and the other work in this series. it’s a ch-2 fix-it with some intense action sequences and major pining, and it has haunted me since i first read it

love on the telephone by tempestbreak, rated E

okay this one is really just 30k of pure smut but it’s also so sweet and features a mini sexual awakening for eddie and some insecure richie with an emphasis on how much they love and trust each other. also it doesn’t hurt that the smut is fire, like does anyone else want that twink obliterated, or is it just me?

the boy who loves you by candlejill, rated E

eddie lives, richie confesses, things are chill and then they’re not. richie’s career flourishes, which is always nice to read and is what ultimately catalyzes eddie’s gay awakening and realization of his love for richie. it’s got some sad angsty parts and a very sweet ending, and it up there as one of my favorite reddie fics of all time

richie and eddie break up [WIP] by skeilig, rated M

a refreshing and realistic take on life ch-2 for the losers, because being in love at thirteen doesn’t mean you can fall into a perfect relationship at 40. i’ll admit, i’m hoping this will ultimately be a “richie and eddie get back together” fic, but it’s still a very good read (and often very funny in the second chapter) at the moment in the midst of their break up

september 1989 and everything else by pineapplecrushface, rated T

cute kid reddie figuring it out and making me smile. the follow up to this and the after derry series by this author are also personal favorites

go west by ssstrychnine, rated T

road trip fic! an absolute work of art slow burn with teen reddie in the 90s. it’s so beautifully written i just wish i could go back and read it for the first time again

the edification of eddie kaspbrak by tozier, rated M

character study with some incredible fucking prose, my lord it gorgeous. explores how eddie learns about love as he grows up, and it’s super fucking sad sometimes bc the poor boy doesn’t know how to have the things he wants and i just want to give him a hug, but it’s really a spectacular fic

circular motion by sinchronicity, rated M

soulmate!AU that follows book canon and even though it’s been a long time since i’ve read it and the details are fuzzy, i remember absolutely loving it and thinking it was incredible

college losers with some severely pining and jealous richie with a lovely ending

predicament bondage [WIP] by dgalerab, rated E

i resisted reading this fic for so long, recently broke and binged all of it, and now i’m like frothing at the mouth for updates. richie’s a closeted actor/comedian who meets eddie, a professional Dom, when he needs help researching a role. they become friends, they develop crushes, richie realizes he’s a sub, and it’s just so much fun to read

there’s a lot more fics to rec so i might add on to this in the future, but in the meantime my biggest tip for for reading fanfiction that took me embarrassingly long to figure out: focus on the authors! if you read something you like, check out the rest of the work by that author bc odds are you’ll like that too. i mentioned it in a few specific works above, but check out the authors catalogues for these fics. if i included every work by these authors that i loved, this list would be miles long

"High School Musical: The Reunion: Glee Edition"

It's occuring to me now just how misleading this title is even though it makes perfect sense to me 😭. So, this fic is actually a crossover between The Flash, Supergirl, and Glee! Basically, there's a reunion happening at McKinley and invites go out to both Barry and Kara as, in this universe, they were Sebastian and Marley (with a couple of tweaks). None of their friends are aware of their secret former lives as members of semi-successful high school glee clubs (Iris and Alex are the only ones because, well, they grew up with them)!

And to make it better: Barry and Kara didn't recognize each other either! So, you can imagine their great surprise when they both find out their high schools are hosting reunions on the same day. In the same town. In the same building. Drama ensues! They have some reunions with other ex glee club members, including one Music Meister (excluding one he-who-will-not-be-named for multiple reasons but one being that he was also in Supergirl and I'm not going out of my way to find a loophole in the plot that makes sense for him). Their friends find out! Songs are probably sung!

And here is your snippet:

He can't go. Barry decides it without even opening the email. Or the three Facebook messages, or the two voicemails, or the five texts. They're all from the same person, more or less. One of the messages is from Trent, and he feels a bit worse about ignoring that one than the rest, but he can't because the second he opens a single one of them, it's over.

The date for the reunion is in a week and he's managed perfectly to ignore it so far! If he just waits until the date passes, then he can reply to Trent and to Blaine with profuse apologizes, but he was busy, and he never got around to checking any of his emails or texts, but he really is so sorry to have missed it, maybe they can meet up just the three of them sometime soon?

A deep sigh is pulled from between his ribs. He slumps back in his chair and closes his eyes, letting himself spin slowly.

"You should go," Iris insists. Barry opens his eyes and catches a glimpse of her across the room, leaning against his desk. Possibly accidentally touching evidence. Totally fine, not a problem at all. "Seriously, it's been ten years! I know that it's not Dalton and technically McKinley wasn't your school, but everyone you went to Dalton with will be there."

"That's the problem," Barry emphasizes, his hands dragging through his hair to grab the top of the chair. "I just... the thought of facing any of them now? After everything, after ten years?"

He just shakes his head, pressing his lips together. His stomach is rocking and he's aware that the spinning probably isn't helping, but he's also afraid that if he stops he might throw up. So he pushes himself with his foot and goes around again, only catching a blur of Iris' exasperated expression.

"Prison World Trio"

This is, unsurprisingly, a TVD fic. I decided, you know the only thing that could make Bonnie and Damon being trapped in the Prison World more interesting than it already is? If Enzo was there, too. So, essentially, he waits on the other side until Damon arrives because he's actually worried about him, but by the time Alaric has been sent through to the land of the living, the spell has been broken, leaving Damon and Enzo trapped along with Bonnie. Then bam! Prison World! Now, I don't have a clear idea of where I go from there, but I know that it involves domestic shenanigans, catching feelings + old feelings resurfacing with angst and arguments and Bonnie wanting to murder both of them! They will, of course, still meet Kai and that's a whole thing because it's Kai, but I still haven't decided an ending yet.

Stop! Snippet time!:

"Take him," Bonnie says to Damon. "Please. He's your murder buddy, not mine."

"Hold on, I still have a say in this," Enzo tries to protest. "And for the record, I am no one's murder buddy anymore. I wouldn't be here if I was, now would I?"

Damon groans, "Oh my god, let it go, we're stuck with each other now, alright? So, your little grudge isn't exactly going to do anyone any good, and if you haven't noticed, you're not exactly dead anymore, so would you shut up?"

"Oh, well I'm glad to know that my death is a mere grudge to you," Enzo quips back drily, throwing a hand up. "You sure you want me to come with you at all? By the sounds of it, you wouldn't even notice if I was gone, so how about you two go ahead and I'll just be on my merry way."

Unbelievable. Trust Enzo to kick up a tantrum at the most inconvenient of times. Damon looks to Bonnie to share in his exasperation, but she raises her eyebrows and presses her lips together in a clear display of not taking sides. Though her pointed silence and looking away feels a whole lot like tiptoeing onto a side.

"Are you -- No!" Damon waves his hands. "How is splitting up going to help us? No, either you come with me, or you go with Bonnie. Your choice, but those are your only two options."

"I'm not exactly seeing how you're going to enforce that if I decide on neither," Enzo says with a shrug, and at this point, Damon's thinking he's just doing it to piss him off. Then again, that's usually his motivation.

"I'll just..." Bonnie gives a vague motion behind ahead of her with an awkward smile and proceeds to try and edge away, "leave you two to it,"

"Wait," Enzo calls to her, staring at Damon, "I'm coming with you."

Damon stares back at him, arms spread. But Enzo just gives him one last look before walking away. Bonnie falters uncertainly and doesn't look too thrilled about this decision either but she just shrugs at Damon like she's sorry, then she goes after Enzo. Leaving Damon standing in the middle of the road on his own.

Fantastic. Just the way he likes it.

"Shorpanga Wedding"

Title says it all, really, I think. We're at Cory and Topanga's wedding (this is Boy Meets World if that wasn't clear), and Shawn is obviously a mess because the two people he is in love with are getting married, but they don't know he's in love with them, and now his chance to say anything is about to be gone! I'm going to need to rewatch that episode before I can get back to this one because I can't remember a lot of what was said, but I know it's going to be extremely angsty with a happy ending!

Teeny tiny snippet:

Don’t go in. Shawn repeats the words over and over in his head, pacing the hall of the fanciest hotel he’s ever stepped foot in. But he came this far, didn’t he? He can’t let how he’s feeling get in the way of this. It’s Cory’s wedding. And… Topanga’s. His best friends. How can he not go in?

He stops pacing and looks down at the rings in the palm of his hand. If he goes in there, these rings will be on Cory’s and Topanga’s fingers for the rest of their lives.

Groaning, he clenches his hand into a fist, feeling the rings dig into his palm. He starts pacing again until singing starts up around the corner. Oh god. What does singing mean at a wedding? That it’s over?

But it can’t be, not without the rings, right? Or did they find replacements? Did they just assume that he would let them down, that he wouldn't show up, so they just went ahead without him?

There’s only one way to find out.

Taking a deep breath, he turns the corner and walks through the hall. His heart leaps into his throat at the sight of the wedding taking place. Cory and Topanga at the altar together. Nausea sweeps over him, but he bites the inside of his cheek and ignores how disconnected his head feels from the rest of his body as he marches up the aisle towards them. He glances at the stage and notices Mrs Matthews on it, the source of the singing. Figures.

Every step forward feels heavier than the last, and like he’s a roadrunner heading straight for the exact spot where the anvil is hanging, waiting to drop and crush him. Except seeing Cory and Topanga standing there, ready to get married, has already done that.

The monthly Angel Fish Awards are peer-nominated, meaning ANYONE IN THE POND CAN NOMINATE ANY POND MEMBER’S FIC. Oh boy someone finally took pity and is gonna let me talk about The Lovers XD

This project got...SO much bigger than intended. It started as a funny crack idea I sent to another CAOS blog about Lilith freaking out about Adam and asking Zelda to be her fake girlfriend. And then I actually started thinking about it, and it has now turned into a four-part series. And it’s going to be angsty. Crack and angst, that’s my brand.

The titles for the series, The Lovers, is a reference to the tarot card. It represents a choice to be made in one’s romantic life, one that often has serious consequences and might be irreversible. It’s going to come into play on both a literal and metaphorical level. We never saw Zelda’s third card in the Tarot episode, and with what I’m setting up, The Lovers will be fitting. But it’s also just a theme of this series--Zelda and Lilith both wanting to choose each other and not always being able to, and the consequences there are for their choices.

The titles for each part of the story, after several re-labelings, come from the song Deep End by Birdy. They are 1) Can we just pretend? 2) I wish they’d told me, 3) How do we mend? and 4) If you mean everything. The titles as well as the general vibe of the song itself should give you a really good idea of the tone and content of this fic. There’s a lot of longing and love but also regret. I actually first heard this song on a Zelith video (here), and while my story is very different than the one the video portrays, it’s themes and hopeful ending are really what inspired me to use the lyrics. I also love this song because it’s not strictly and obviously about romantic love, and neither is this fic. It’s going to be a very slow burn to their eventual relationship, because it’s really important to me that they truly bond as friends and get to know each other as people first. Right now, they each need a friend and confidante much more than a romance, and part of what I think gives them so much potential as a couple is how similar and well-suited to each other they are on those basic levels first and foremost.

Can we just pretend?

Oh, so much to say about this fic. I love fake dating fics, it’s just a hilarious trope with so much potential for awkward and absurd situations. Plus, I know there are several in this fandom, but they’re all AUs, and I think one of the fun parts of setting one in the CAOS universe is that Lilith and Zelda are trying to fool each other just as much as everyone else. Their motives are really layered and at odds, which is great to watch since they are both so good at acting and manipulating, so in the course of trying to play each other they find that they’ve kind of met their match and enjoy the challenge.

For Zelda, on the surface (and what she tells Lilith), her central motivation for everything is still trying to gain power within the church, and with Blackwood still being her best route to do that, she wants to use this fake relationship to make him jealous. Really, it’s just adding another layer to the pressure she puts on him to make their relationship legitimate. But also, she has reason to want to keep him away for the moment: Leticia. Then, finally, of course, she just wants to stay close to Lilith because she’s suspicious and hopes that if they spend time together, she’ll be able to monitor and limit Lilith’s interactions with Sabrina, plus improve her chances of catching the woman in a lie.

This part of the series takes place starting with the events of A Midwinter’s Tale and ending a little after The Epiphany, and you’re all in for a wild ride. There’s lots of shenanigans, but also a lot of softness and angst--and that’s where the layered meaning of the title comes in. It is obviously humorous because this is the question Lilith asks Zelda in the beginning--”please pretend to be my girlfriend and help me out”--but as things go on and the two of them start to actually bond, it takes on another context. A fake relationship needs a fake break up, and they both know that once that happens, things are really going to change. Zelda will pursue Blackwood, and Lilith will continue doing whatever the Dark Lord asks her to do with Sabrina. There’s not really going to be room in their lives for this real friendship that’s formed, but they want to pretend they’ll make it work. Whoops, started with crack then gut-punched you with feelings.

Anyway, there will be bed sharing, Hilda completely misinterpreting things, a whole side plot with Vinegar Tom, awkward dinner dates, temperamental telekinesis, and hide and seek in the mortuary! Yaaay!

I wish they’d told me

So, this part is sad? Sorry. After their fake break up, they are both moving in different directions and really trying to pretend they don’t miss each other as much as they do. And while they are trying to hang on to their friendship, they choose their own plans over each other a lot. This also takes place over the remaining episodes from part 2, so there’s a lot of heavy content in general, and honestly, not much is going to change just because Zelda and Lilith are on better terms.

The thing with this section is that there will be a lot of added context to certain scenes. Blackwood’s passion play will be a direct dig at Lilith, and knowing Zelda was involved with it will make it hurt all the more. Lucifer giving Blackwood His blessing to marry Zelda will be to minimize her influence on Lilith as much as Sabrina. Lilith’s tricks with the tarot cards and her glamour of Edward will be to try and help Zelda as much as for her own ends.

The only really big thing that changes is that without Adam and his offer of taking Lilith to Tibet, the awful dinner scene will be replaced with Lucifer taunting Lilith about what Zelda is going through, since it lines up with the honeymoon. But don’t expect Lilith to save her, unfortunately, because she’s terrified of what Lucifer would do to both of them if he found out she interfered. Plus, she is conscious that it would bring up a lot of questions if she did, like how she knew Zelda was in trouble, and she’s afraid of that, too. Which brings us to the end of part 2 where, obviously, everyone finds out who Lilith really is, and it’s much worse because they all genuinely care about her and trusted her.

On the bright side though, we will see Lilith’s relationship with Sabrina, and the Fright Club and Spellman family by extension, improve, and how that affects them both. It’s going to get very awkward for her at times listening to Sabrina and Hilda treat her like Zelda’s ex and lament their break up, but they’ll also show her a lot more care and consideration and go to her for help more, which is a very odd experience for Lilith.

How do we mend?

Part 3! Kudos to everyone who’s actually read this far, because I know it’s literally a fucking essay. Anyway, as should be obvious from the title, this largely deals with Zelda and Lilith trying to figure out their feelings for each other in the aftermath of Lucifer’s imprisonment. On the one hand, Lilith’s betrayal is a lot more personal for Zelda. On the other hand, because she knows Lilith a lot better, she realizes a lot more of the truth about Lilith’s relationship to Lucifer and exactly what she went through. So Zelda is dealing with a lot of guilt and confusion about what was real and what could have been done differently and how she actually feels about Lilith after it all. So, again, we have a lot of added context to some of her actions, like deciding to have the coven pray to Lilith.

Meanwhile, Lilith is just lonely. She’s got her crown, but she’s also lost the first people who ever really respected and cared for her, even if they didn’t really know her. She wants to talk to Zelda and explain but doesn’t feel it’s her place. Bring on the yearning. Eventually they will be brought back together though, and that’s the start of this series really diverging from canon, because Lilith’s relationships to everybody is going to change how they handle a lot of events. Plus, I just really want to do a better job with Mary’s plotline and the pagans’ portrayal than canon.

They’ve got a lot to work through and work out, and will finally have to really confront and examine their feelings for each other, especially with some of the very emotional things they go through. They’re very protective of each other, and I love it. Another interesting thing will be when Marie comes on the scene and shows interest in Zelda. I haven’t quite decided how I’m going to play that dynamic yet, but I do know that it’s not going to be one of jealousy or competition. I’m not into that. They’re all mature adults perfectly capable of respecting each other’s boundaries and choices.

If you mean everything

Finally! Part 4 is the least planned out, since it’s so far in the future and so reliant on how the pacing of part 3 works out, which I don’t know yet, and also whatever I take from part 4 of the show, which I don’t know yet. But I do really want the main focus to be on Lilith and Zelda working through their respective traumas in the context of their relationship. They’ve both been through a lot, and they need to learn how to talk about it with each other. And I think that they’ll still be having some trouble coming to terms with the intensity of their feelings, because love isn’t something that’s been abundant in either of their lives really, and it has a way of changing your priorities even if you didn’t plan on it. I do think this part will probably end up being shorter and more like an epilogue. I’m definitely not going with the pregnancy storyline, so Lucifer/Blackwood will probably end up captured at the end of part 3 unless I can think of another way to have them escape or separate them.

I hope it was somewhat interesting. I didn’t even try not to give any spoilers because I’m me and overshare. But I hope it got everyone excited for this story and inspired to keep bugging me about writing it, because I need it.

N. Anything you were planning to write that never got written?

I guess I could go with Fibonacci? I mean, it will be written, but it’s taking a lot longer to plan out because I’m weird and want to create mostly new lore to fit the new fantasy world.

Another idea I had was a more angsty fic during the second game where Shepard, for some reason, met Morinth before ever knowing about Samara. Morinth joined the crew, but being the bitch she was, used the relationship budding between Garrus and Shep to torture Shepard for the hell of it. She used her magic Ardat Yakshi powers to seduce and corrupt Garrus into ‘falling in love’ with herself.

When it came time that Shepard found out that Morinth was abusing Garrus and probably bound to kill him when she got bored, she killed the bitch. Only it angered Garrus because Shep killed the woman he loved. He finished the mission, but never forgave Shep, even only going onto the ship with Victus because he didn’t trust her not to kill the Primarch for whatever reason. Shit went downhill and Shep tried to convince Garrus to forgive her, ending up with Garrus threating that if he ever saw Shep again outside of their mission, he’d kill her.

End of the war and Samara hunts down Garrus when she hears about the situation as a way of thanking Shepard for doing what she could not and killing Morinth. She manages to find a way to break the hold Morinth had on Garrus - I’m thinking through some Ardat Yakshi priestesses - and, guilt-ridden because he thought Shepard died, takes it upon himself to hunt for any traces of her and, if he could find her, to give her a final rest in peace.

Only he does find her alive, but hurt and in a hospital under the guise of a Jane Doe thanks to Liara finally giving Shepard a way to find some peace and quiet from responsibility. After losing and being threatened by death from the love of her life, Shepard just waits for the end or until she can have enough strength to do it herself until Garrus tracks her down.

The first words she says to him are, “You finally came to kill me.”

The fic would be a way for me to either get out of that hole I dug with them for a happy ending, or I’d leave it there.

U. Any stories that took an abrupt U-turn from where you thought you were going?

Oh boy. Fibonacci fits that perfectly. True, it’s still under work, but it originally started as something much simplier with the catch being that I switched around personalities of the crew. For instance, Garrus was Jack, etc. But that started to not feel right. I could have started from the beginning and achieved the idea, but coming in so late and having to explain seemed like it’d take precident before the actual fantasy element. I chose what appealed to me more, the fantasy, and stuck to mostly canon for backstories and personalities.

Oh, boy. Here we go.

5. It is in everyone’s best interests that Christopher and Lorelai have almost nothing to do with each other at this point.

I don’t know how unpopular an opinion this is (probably um, not so much) but it would have remained extremely uncomfortable if they had remained on friendly terms with each other. Every time they are in the same space, they end up reliving their adolescence and it’s fun for an afternoon, but it also keeps them from ever really growing up. As long as Lorelai’s there to enable him and help fix his mistakes, Christopher will never become a real adult. As long as he’s around, she’ll just end up making extremely ill-advised spur-of-the-moment decisions because she wants to relive her youth again. They’ll just keep repeating the same pattern that their early parenthood forced on them: Christopher gets off scot-free due to Lorelai’s long-standing attachment to him, while she’s left to pick up the pieces and each spontaneous decision causes massive emotional damage to everyone around her.

So to put it more simply, Christopher’s a shitty friend because he can’t help being who he is. All of the stuff I just mentioned caused them to have extreme boundary issues that would end up hurting any future relationships either of them might have.

And then there’s the Luke issue. It won’t really ever be okay for Luke and Christopher to be around each other again. As far as Luke is concerned, this is the person Lorelai more-or-less cheated on him with. Their relationship could never really survive unless he was sure he could trust her. So Lorelai cut off contact. I don’t think Luke forced her to do this: it was her decision because it’s healthier for everyone involved. Including Christopher.

Of course, this might change a little bit once Rory has that baby. I think that’s healthy, too, and it has been a decade, after all. It won’t ever be like it was, though, and that’s still a positive thing.

(BTW, I would love a fic written about this that wasn’t too angsty and didn’t make Christopher out to be a total villain, if anyone feels inclined)

4. Zach is a great husband for Lane. Yes, better than Dave would have been.

Lane and Zach appeared to have the happiest, most functional relationship in the revival by far. I thought he was fairly sweet and supportive in the last season of the original series as well. It’s a little sad that they didn’t achieve music superstardom, but in my head they’re involved in musical projects that we didn’t quite hear the details of. Sometimes it’s better to let go of one’s wildest dreams for these characters and just be happy when they are.

3. Season 7 isn’t that bad.

As someone who followed the show when it was on, I can tell you that ASP had not only been toying with the idea of Christopher/Lorelai for years, but she often gave off the impression that she preferred that pairing. More to the point, there simply was no quick fix for what happened at the end of season six. Luke was going to be devastated, and he was going to have to not talk to Lorelai for a while. The season 7 writers could have avoided doing the L/C pairing, but based on what had been set up in the show to that point, it’s not surprising that they went ahead with it. We were going to have to deal with it one way or another.

Season 7 definitely has its awkward moments, but I think it gets better as it goes on. Luke had been such a jerk the previous season that they had to build him up again and make him a great guy. He stops fumbling with the parenting thing and is a great dad to April: he finally stands up to his child’s mother: he’s there for Liz and Lane and Zach. He’s able to finally ask Lorelai for help and to come through for her when she needs him. Lorelai is most awkward for me in the early episodes but I think she does start to improve once the show hits the middle stages and the LOVE TRIANGLE ANGST is dialed up to 11: ten years on it’s a lot easier to actually enjoy a lot of what goes on. I think that Logan and Rory actually become a couple you can root for throughout most of the season. The last third of the season I think is mostly classic GG and as good as the show got in its first five seasons.

2. The breakdown in parental responsibilities re: April between Luke and Lorelai in the revival wasn’t an indication of dysfunction on their part, but was fairly typical parent/stepparent behavior.

There is so much missing information in the April/Luke thread in the revival that it’s often hard to get much of a grasp on what’s going on. Why does he seem to be the only parent providing for her education? If he’s putting forth that much effort, why did he mysteriously not attend her graduations? Why are Lorelai and Rory almost rude to her? Why does Lorelai seem to think she’s spoiled? Did she get up early and attend the “real” wedding we didn’t see or could she not make it for some reason? Blah blah blah. But I digress.

Oddly enough, the thing most people seem to have a real issue with is when Luke brings up April’s graduation gift and Lorelai seems to imply that April is spoiled because of how much Luke is paying for on her behalf and suggests that she get a job instead. She offers to help pay for the trip and Luke says he has it handled. For some reason, this gets twisted into Luke being closed-off and refusing to let Lorelai participate in April’s life by not letting her pay for something she disapproves of anyway, even though we are told shortly afterwards that it was Lorelai’s idea that they split up responsibilities in this way.

And oh yeah, this is shortly after Rory has invited herself home, when she has no job or plans to get one, even though she mysteriously has access to enough money to rent an apartment of her own. I don’t know about you guys, but Lorelai seems to be a wee bit hypocritical on this one regarding who in the Gilmore/Danes brood is really spoiled. (Good thing Jess seems to have his shit together).

All of this is kind of beside the point. This is the sort of discussion that is fairly common between parents and stepparents. I have two stepparents and four adult stepsiblings: when we have a problem, we go to our actual parent, not our stepparent. The one that isn’t technically related to us can have opinions and they can advise, but they aren’t the ones making the decisions. All of this is perfectly normal. Lorelai never wanted to supplant April’s mother: she just wanted a chance to be involved in her life, to be able to meet her and spend time with her and know what was going on with her. She’s getting to do all of those things: she wouldn’t have these opinions about April’s plans if she didn’t know what was going on with her. There’s a big difference between “you can’t meet my child” and “I have this one expense handled, but thanks.”.

(as you can see, I have way overthought this one. I’ve contemplated writing a fic about it to fill in the gaps, but I’ve never done that before, so IDK)

1. It is perfectly fine for Luke and Lorelai not to have kids of their own. It’s also perfectly fine for them not to want them.

I often think I’m missing something in the fandom because I still fail to grasp why Luke and Lorelai not having kids is such a big deal. I just wanted them to be together and for Christopher to leave them alone. The fact that they didn’t settle on a traditional life together makes sense to me because when they finally settled down together, they hadn’t done much of anything traditionally anyway. They had both been married: they had both raised kids on their own. It makes sense to me after Lorelai had ended things with Luke and married someone else solely because of the marriage issue and found that it wasn’t going to give her what she wanted that she backed away from those things. I think she regretted making their relationship all about marriage and all the pain the Christopher interlude caused Luke: more than anything, she just wanted not to lose him again. Luke just wanted what she did. So she purposely made their life together not about that, and it was a good life. Add in what may have been some turbulent adolescent years with the almost-stepdaughter and it’s easy to see why they didn’t want more.

I think a lot of fans conflate their communication issues with the fact that they didn’t have kids. There’s this mentality in some quarters that they desperately wanted to get married and have kids but were afraid to talk to each other about it, so it never happened. While I think miscommunication the one time Luke tried to discuss it is something that happened, it’s not really the tragedy some fans want it to be. The main reason it never came up is because it wasn’t a priority and they were (!) happy with their lives as they existed.

I kind of imagined they went on to a traditional family life when the series first ended, too. Sometimes I get wistful when I read fics about it. But I also think it’s okay that it didn’t happen.
