Wednesday's class was boring again, so I attempted some sworn brothers giving each other looks. My last JGY was better (less young looking) and I have never drawn NMJ before and am only semi-satisfied, but hey, my baby Xichen has the shiniest hair of his hemisphere and I love that for him!

I think the most fundamental thing I see people get wrong about nielan and their relationship in canon is that either they're treated like an emotionally blank canvas for Jin Guangyao to inject drama into, or if they are allowed to keep any of their emotional issues for themselves, it's often about Xichen pulling away and trusting other people more than Mingjue. (oh look this is secretly also just about jgy again) And what you need to understand about canon nielan is that the person who is pulling away and putting boundaries between them is mostly Nie Mingjue.

All I'm saying is that only one of these guys went "Work goes above saving your sworn brother's life" and it wasn't Xichen!

And it isn't because Mingjue doesn't like Xichen. That is his best friend, the person second only to his literal baby brother in terms of trust and closeness. But you can't really understand Nie Mingjue without understanding that he's not only doomed but committed to being doomed, and thereby comitted to his own depersonalization, and that that will come at the expense of his interpersonal relationships, because there are certain things he can't allow people to do for him because "what's right" must always come above his own wants and needs.

Xichen reaching out to other people never really comes at the expense of him reaching out to Mingjue as well, it's part of the constant balancing act he does. For as much time as he spends defending jgy to nmj we see him also spend an equally signifcant amount of time talking up nmj to jgy. It doesn't work but that's because of his methods, not for lack of effort. This isn't really about blame, both of them have deeply personal reasons to act as they do and both of their ways are... less than ideal, in the end. It's about understanding. There is a boundary of duty and position between nielan that recquires them to never truly be each other's priority and Nie Mingjue is the one most invested in enforcing it.

random headcanon that just came to me, but i'm having LXC feels, so just bear with me for a second here

so like... my boy Xichen has lost both his sworn brothers, right? i'm thinking that after his seclusion, once it really finally sinks in that he is the only one standing from 3Zun, he would get really attached to NHS and JL, because they are basically the only traces of his brothers left alive. he'd go into full Gege Mode™ and just pop in to the Unclean Realm and the Jinlintai completely unprompted and uninvited to help those two run their sects because god knows both NHS and JL could use some competent help (and also a bonus brother/uncle to love).

(also, i'm not saying LWJ would get extremely jealous, but... that's exactly what i'm saying. like, revert back to his little boy "xiongzhang pay attention to me" mode in his own silently brooding way whenever he sees LXC)

just... let LXC be the way MXTX has intended: The Brother before all other brothers.

Many fanfics characterize Jin Guangyao as the sugar baby within his relationship with the rest of 3zun, but I am certain he would be the daddy in such a relationship.

Who funds the watchtowers? Who rebuilt the cloud recesses? Who was the chief cultivatior? Who was part of the Jin sect?

Are those little dolls made to look like 3zun as animals in the most recent comic? I need to know how/when Nie Mingjue got those. Are they gifts from Lan Xichen or Nie Huaisang? Did Jin Guangyao sew them himself and stuff them full of evil talismans in case the song didn't work? So many possibilities.

The 3zun dolls were a self-indulgent reference to this (previously abandoned) doodle! As for who made them in universe? I'll leave it up for interpretation B*)
