Mr M. was my favorite client. He grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, and he wanted to 'recreate' his memories of the 1950s and 60s in paintings.

Newborn calves can look terribly skinny. They fatten up quickly!

He sent me a photo of his dad with him and his sister. I added them in.

Dang, I love Jersey cows! I'm sure glad I got to paint these.

Milk Cow

   This is just the sort of cool, golden morning where I miss going out to milk a cow. We had a ‘cow-share’ arrangement with a neighbor for about ten years. He wanted to own a Jersey but didn’t have time to milk every day (he’s a busy vet); I could take care of a cow but couldn’t reasonably afford to buy one and provide vet care. Sharing was a great solution. I don’t miss Doris; she was a bitch, but I miss Belle, Boux, and Duchess, who were all pleasant cows. I miss having absolutely jacked arms. Fifteen minutes hand-milking a cow every morning makes you look like a pro athlete! I miss the cats hanging out in the barn, telling me they’re starving to death (a little white lie)

Belle and Duchess

   I’ll admit; I don’t miss it in the dead of winter, or during a cold November rain . . . but on a clear, bright summer morning I think of them wistfully. The cats probably do, too.
