The side of the autism parent not many talk about. When we have to parent a child or children who have explosive aggression. I Have so many bruises on my arms and legs and back from my kids. I have to hide them with photo editing software. And I see so many not discussing this side of our kids. But here it is, and it is sucky, no one wants to say they have an aggressive child. And this is one of many reasons I homeschool my oldest. Once schools learn he has these tendencies, due to being non speaking, learning disabilities, and general frustration from sounds, they all of a sudden want nothing to do with him! Even schools that “specialize” with autism. They are just not equipped to help our kids or “handle” them. I honestly feel like I am failing as a parent because I have no idea what to do. I broke down and cried my head off last night from putting my gremlins to bed. I got slapped in the face by my four year old and then again by my nine year old. I got kicked and punched and bitten. It has been so hard finding others who are willing to talk about this and discuss. I honestly feel like I just suck as a parent and have no idea what I am doing. My husband feels pretty much the same. One of the things that was always on the forefront of my mind as a mom when my daughter was younger was finding someone who could be a great role model for her. I never would have envisioned that I’d need one for myself at this age.

I suppose it’s a silly notion that as an adult, I’d need someone to look up to. As a mother, it’s my job to protect and nurture my children. It’s my job to teach them right from wrong and help them be confident in themselves. However, there are times I falter and I don’t feel confident in myself. Sometimes, I need a beacon of hope or an example of what a mother should be. Because of these depressingly unprecedented times of 2020, I’ve definitely felt less than myself, hoping for words of encouragement and inspiration so I can better myself for my kids.

Among the many stars in Hollywood that I could look up to, one shines the brightest to me— my role model is none other than entrepreneur Whitney Port. Whitney is a fashion designer, wife, and mother who takes life in stride. Her smile is wide and her style is impeccable. She is the embodiment of grace and humility; she is the face of kindness and understanding. But of all her super powers, Whitney recognizes that she is not without flaws. Perhaps this is what I admire most— Whitney shows all of us moms in the world that it’s okay to be ourselves no matter what other people think or say. The YouTube channel she runs with her husband, Timmy, showcases her vulnerability of motherhood, her marriage, and her life.

This year has tested me as a mother. Being home with my kids everyday, while a blessing to spend time with them, has been challenging. I’ve found myself overwhelmed with my teenage daughter as she is coming into her own; I grew frustrated as I struggled to keep the house in order as my son and stepson messily played on their days home; and then there were the days when I felt less than a woman because I wasn’t as productive as the Instagram accounts I’d tried so hard to keep up with. On her Dear Media podcast, With Whit, Whitney touches on challenges of her own as a mother, particularly the inner struggle within ourselves to recognize that we alone are enough for ourselves and our families. In moments of self-doubt, when I couldn’t turn to anyone else, fearing I’d be judged the way I’d judged myself, I’d listen to Whitney’s podcast so I didn’t feel so alone. From her upbeat intro, featuring music from music sensation Shoffy, to her meaningful interviews with guests, such as Dr. BJ Fogg, Whitney has helped me through my journey, helping to realize my moments of “shine” so I can acknowledge the good I do, as well as recognizing that I can take time for myself without shaming myself in the process. There are so many other lessons she has taught me, but these are the tools I definitely needed in surviving 2020.

Watching Whitney has made me realize that it’s okay to be comfortable in my own skin. So what if I fall apart from time to time? I’m human— I won’t always have it all together. Embracing my flaws has actually made me stronger, which makes me a better mother to my children. Of all the things she has taught me in this past year, self love is the greatest gift that Whitney Port has given to me.

Happy Friday! I can’t believe it’s still raining, where is the sun!? It honestly feels as if it’s been raining for over a month, I’m done with this weather. As for the kids Emmy has learned to climb on the couch, she’s a little daredevil. She tries to stand up on her toys and jump off the end of the couch I swear babies/toddlers have no fear. Nosh got an immunization at school yesterday, says his arm is really sore today. He has no school again, feels like he always has a holiday or something keeping him home. .
