Why Not Me?
by Eleanor_Fenyx (@eleanorfenyx)
G, 26k, Lan Jingyi
Summary: Lan Jingyi knows that he's a Lan by blood. He wears the Lan family headband, with its special embroidery and everything. He's a disciple like everyone else, even though he's not so good at sitting through his classes, and he's racked up more punishments than anyone else in his age group twice over already. He's trying, so why is it none of his family want to raise him? Maybe they don't know he's here, in the children's home. Maybe they just need to learn who he is and they'll take in their orphaned cousin with open arms. If he could only learn to behave and earn their approval then he'd be set with a new family to take over for the parents he doesn't really remember, but why is behaving so hard?! Mojo's comments: Oh, I LOVE me some lonely, unloved Jingyi stories, and this one delivers. I think I might have cried for the whole first chapter, because poor misfit BABY! He's just so full of feelings that he splits at the seams and they all come jumbled and spilling out. But that's good, because it turns out there are people who will actually LISTEN to him. And then it turns out that there are people who will love him, too.
pov lan jingyi, child lan jingyi, orphan lan jingyi, loneliness, self-esteem issues, self-worth issues, adhd, neurodivergence, lan jingyi has adhd, found family, angst, fluff, family, lan jingyi & lan qiren, families of choice, gusu lan sect rules, character study, rejection sensitive dysphoria, thirteen years of wei wuxian's death

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 40 part one
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)  (whole thing on AO3)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Agree to Disagree
The juniors are arguing because Sizhui said that some demonic cultivators might have good intentions. According to Jin Ling that means that Sizhui is celebrating the murders of Jin Ling's parents, or something.
Tumblr media
(Actor) Peixin Qi uses forehead-squinching as a primary acting tool, which would be perfectly fine if he wasn't playing a character with a red dot between his eyebrows.
He goes on to say that Wei Wuxian is the evillest of them all, way eviller than Xue Yang. Which in sheer numbers of victims, is probably a fair point. But Xue Yang was way more of a dick.
Tumblr media
Ouyang Zichen is all of us when he asks Jin Ling to chill the fuck out.
Tumblr media
Sizhui apologizes even though Jingyi is ready to throw down on his behalf. It's unclear if this helps, because Hanguang-Jun chooses this moment to arrive. He immediately defuses the situation with the power of stinkeye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(more after the cut!)
More Than Meets the Eye
Many differences between CQL and the novel are adaptational choices - Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's deep, early friendship; the yin iron plot, Jiang Cheng being loveable, etc. Changes like that, I normally don't point out, because adaptations are AUs, in my view, and can be enjoyed separately from their sources.
Other changes are driven by censorship, however, and in those cases I think it's fair to look to the novel and its less-censored adaptations for a peek at what's happening off camera. Particularly when there are scenes and interactions in The Untamed where the show seems to be deliberately pointing to the novel to fill in the blanks.
Tumblr media
This moment on the stairs is one such scene. In the show, Lan Wangji carries liquor upstairs to Wei Wuxian, and the juniors react with shock; Jingyi drops his chicken out of his mouth and Sizhui stuffs it back in there.
Tumblr media
They are shocked because he bought liquor, and that's the extent of their reaction.
In the Donghua, Manhua, and Novel, Lan Wangji is dragging Wei Wuxian up those stairs, having drunkenly tied him up with his headband.
Tumblr media
First he stops to show his prize to the juniors, who have basically the same reaction in every version of the story, including Jinygi dropping his chicken and Sizhui stuffing it back in his mouth. In the novel, however, Sizhui does that to stop Jingyi from saying anything to Lan Wangji & his captive.
Tumblr media
The liquor, in all versions, is a clear sign of how much Lan Wangji has mellowed since his youth. In case we need another reminder, we learn here that he let Sizhui get a tattoo on his finger.
Tumblr media
Every parent will tell you, you gotta pick your battles.
Returning to to the timeline in which no visible bondage is occurring, Wei Wuxian is sitting around in the room upstairs waiting for Lan Wangji. Wasn't he busy talking to Lan Xichen when Lan Wangji went into the inn to shut the kids up? How did he get upstairs before Lan Wangji? Never mind, never mind.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian goes to look out the window and Wen Ning appears, hanging off the roof like a dork, or like someone who has seen that one Spider-Man movie and is hoping for some upside-down kissing.
Wen Ning asks if Jin Ling is the kid he halfway orphaned, and Wei Wuxian says yes.
Tumblr media
Then he hears Lan Wangji coming, and Wen Ning falls to the ground for no reason.
Wei Wuxian urgently shoos Wen Ning away, trying to hide him from Lan Wangji.
Tumblr media
Wen Ning acts way too clueless for someone who spends so much time third-wheeling.
Tumblr media
There's no in-world reason for Wei Wuxian to hide Wen Ning; They fought side-by side in Yi City, and they were all together for A-Qing's burial. There's not a problem between him and Lan Wangji.
Once again, the novel provides the missing information. Wei Wuxian is hiding Wen Ning because Lan Wangji is hella jealous even when he's sober. Wen Ning fell to the ground because drunk Lan Wangji leapt through the window and kicked him.
In the novel, Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji's evening ends with a game of tag that's loaded with sexual tension, followed by a kiss...followed by Lan Wangji literally knocking himself out to avoid taking advantage of Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji does everything in the most extreme way possible.
In the live action, the most sexually charged part of their interaction is this positively sinful hip thrust that Wei Wuxian gives when he turns around at the window.
Tumblr media
If you've seen Xiao Zhan dancing, you know this is not an accident.
Unlike the novel's perpetually clueless protagonist, live-action Wei Wuxian clearly knows he's on a date right now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and he's enjoying every minute of it. He's delighted that Lan Wangji has provided *good* liquor, rather than the rotgut he's able to afford himself.
Tumblr media
As he pours for Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji points out that both of their brothers know who WWX is at this point. Wei Wuxian isn't happy about it but he says they can't do anything. Which is...not correct.
He tries once again to get Lan Wangji to tell him how he recognized him, and Lan Wangji responds by asking him why his memory sucks so much.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian says "you try dying by falling from a great height TWICE and see how your brain likes it." That's what he should have said, anyway.
Tumblr media
This whole thing about his memory isn't actually important in the live action, even though it keeps being mentioned. He's forgotten the name of their song because he was delirious when he heard it; otherwise his memory seems perfectly fine.
I think this might be another instance of the live action giving a wink to novel readers in the audience, because in the novel Wei Wuxian forgot Lan Wangji's confession of love. Which, like WangXian, was presented in a cave while WWX was delirious; Lan Wangji is not great at choosing his moment.
Tumblr media
Anyway, this may be why Lan Wangji seems to take Wei Wuxian's memory problems personally, despite having very little in-show reason to be upset.
Lan Wangji changes the subject by asking Wei Wuxian to go to Jinlintai with him, to search for Nie Mingjue's head. Sounds like a perfect romantic getaway for a boy and his favorite necromancer.
Just as Wei Wuxian starts to ask what Zewu-Jun will think, Zewu-Jun and his cheekbones come into the room.
Tumblr media
He's taken time to think things over--a concept the rest of the cultivation world could stand to learn about, incidentally--and he agrees that they should investigate.
Note: the non-CQL illustrations come from the MDZS manhua, which is complete online (mangadex.org includes the uncensored extra bits), and is about halfway through being published in English by Seven Seas. It's delightful and I highly recommend it.
Bonus: Lan Wangji and Sizhui enjoying some tie-in cup noodles. (A few in-character ads are included in the Viki version of the show.)

DRAWTOBER #15 - Holding Me, Holding You by @guqin-and-flute
Wei Wuxian is dead, along with so many of their Clanspeople at the Nightless City. Wangji has been punished. There are many things out of Lan Xichen's control, in this moment. But comforting a crying child is not one of them. --- Lan Xichen meets Lan Jingyi. And decides to keep him.
so I'm sure if you follow me you know about this AU by now - this is the prequel fic, wherein the son is acquired. LXC is........... very much not okay at this moment in time, and then he accidentally bonds with an orphaned baby, and then he's separated from said baby "for his own good" (because obviously focusing on literally anything other than giving 100% to his sect is Bad and Selfish 😬) and uh. he does not handle it well. so here's poor poor Xichen having a dadly breakdown over imagining the life he won't get to see ;_;
(an aside, but I just love the fact that LXC looks at this literal baby and goes 'oh this one's gonna be a goofball, I can just tell' aND HE'S RIGHT!)

Sip the gossip (drink till you choke)
Sip the gossip, burn down your throat
When Jingyi, Zizhen and Sizhui joined Jin Ling at the newly opened bar near Jinlintai after the discussion conference, last thing they expect was to find him frowning so deeply that he appeared murderous, fingers gripping his cup hard enough to crack it.
"You okay?" Jingyi asked as he flagged down a waitress for some more wine and snacks. "Did someone mess with you or something? I can pretend I'm drunk and beat them up for you."
"No." And Jin Ling eyes darken even more for a moment, his attention drawn somewhere else. "Shut up and listen."
Everyone focuses in on the conversation happened at the table to their right. Two men, one fat and the other stick thin, draped in so much fake jewelry that their skin was beginning to turn green.
"Heavens, what is this world coming to?" The fat one shouted, downing a large cup of alcohol, "Inviting that disgraceful murderer to the discussion conference as if he hadn't been the one nursing Wen dogs all those years ago! Such scum to share space with us, fine people! Why don't they invite other criminals too?! My brother's been locked up for decades for an accidental killing, he deserves to be heard more than that Yiling Laozu!"
"And he's being so liberal around Hanguang-Jun too!" The skinny one completes, finishing his own wine jar and ordering another, "Such whorish behaviors, even for a cutsleeve! And nobody dares say anything! Not even Zewu-Jun! He lets them do whatever, I bet he'd say nothing if they began fucking in the middle of the conference hall!"
"Disgusting! Who does he think he is, flaunting like he doesn't have our families' blood on his hands?! I should just kill him myself and rid the world of that evil again!" The fat one shouts, hitting his fist against the table loud enough for the dishes to clank together. "And burn down that monster of his too, the Ghost General! My God, a Wen dog allowed among us! Treated the same as us!"
"You're telling me! He acts all modest and innocent, but we all know who he's killed! How does Sect Leader Jin tolerate his existence? His father must be rolling in his grave!"
"His mother too! The Yiling Laozu killed her, yet her son is acting so familial with him! Even Sect Leader Jiang says nothing! What kind of an uncle is that?! Did he not care about his own sister at all?!"
"What could he even do? The Lans coddle the Yiling Laozu like he's their most prized possession! And Sect Leader Jin's just some brat that got put on a throne, what does he know? I bet the Yiling Laozu is manipulating him and waiting to take over the Jin sect himself! Isn't he in the body of one of Jin Guangshan's half sons? It would be the perfect pretext!"
"I don't know how everyone is okay with all this! Didn't we risk put lives storming the Burial Mounds decades ago to kill the Yiling Laozu?! We're all supposed to protect him and love him now?! Ridiculous!"
"You know everyone else thinks the same! But they're too scared of the Lans! They've gained so much power recently, all those new disciples they've adopted out of nowhere... orphans! And they're taught by the Yiling Laozu... how does Lan Qiren tolerate this heresy?!"
"Terrible, terrible world we live in! Imagine, me, a sect leader, getting scolded by some Lan junior! All because I said-"
"It was because you are a prejudiced, small-minded, overly privileged piece of shit that became so insufferable someone had to speak up." Jin Ling loudly intervened, unable to take anymore of the tirade. He walked up to the neighboring table and delighted in the horrified looks of the two men. "And you should be glad it was a Lan and not me because as bratty as you lot think I am, I am equal parts as powerful and I could have had you sent into the dungeons with a look."
"If you insist on being detestable in public," Sizhui started, icy anger in his eyes that looked so much like Wen Ruohan's that the two men nearly got war flashbacks, "make sure the people you speak ill of aren't within earshot. This is a bar, and alcohol is being consumed here. Inhibitions are lowered and emotions run high." And he draws his blade out of its sheath just enough for the glare to shine in the men's eyes. "It would be most unpleasant to ruin this establishment's new furniture with bloodstains."
"And anyway," Zizhen added, smiling dangerously, "not everybody is up for hearing all this vitriol. If this is how you think of your generations' most respectable and most powerful members, you must not be that intelligent or useful to maintain relations with either. My father will be hearing about this, what is the point wasting our sect's resources for the likes of you?"
"I'm nowhere near as elegant as my friends over here, so heed my warning. Talk shit of anyone from the Lan sect, which, mind youm includes Senior Wei and the Ghost General, and I'll have you delivered to the Lan sect's punishment quarters myself. Hanguang-Jun will gladly take care of the rest after, and I'll thoroughly enjoy watching." Jingyi spoke, his voice so low and threatening that it made even his friend's skin prickle with fear. He also took the wine jars off the men's table and sent them a glare. "This is for the trouble. On your tab."
They nodded and quickly scampered off.
The four friends began laughing and high-fiving each other immediately after, sharing alcohol and memories the entire rest of the night.

Alright, you have answered me again (SY gets two daemons sounds extremely interesting! The "what the fuck happened to Shen Qingqiu" Peak Lord meeting in this AU is going to have some shit to talk about, huh!) so now I'm moving on to the next in my list of WIPs I'm really super curious about - Scooby Gang Juniors? Juniors fics are so fun what shenanigans are they getting into?
auw im literally dead u r so kind ( ;´ - `;)♡
scooby gang juniors, actual title some 'Never Love An Anchor' lyrics bc thats the theme song of this fic, is actually the first longfic i ever started writing! it has also been a WIP for mmm. four years or so. i started writing it right after watching the untamed for the first time in 2019 lmao, but never finished it because at that point id never written ANYTHING as long as it was gearing up to be (the outline is 20k). i hope to finally finish it and post it some time soon, probs after WINR and the ZZL&YQY fics are done. its probs some of my fav writing ive ever done but never shared with anyone haha
summary: Wei Wuxian may have drafted a ritual for willingly bringing someone back from the dead somewhere in his madness in the caves of the Burial Mounds, but if he did it was never found. In the absence of a convenient literal ghost from the past to help exact his revenge, Nie Huaisang turns to the next best thing: his old friend's son.
Meanwhile, Lan Sizhui finds a man buried deep underground with soft, familiar eyes.
[Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, Jin Ling, Ouyang Zizhen, and Wen Ning go on a life changing field trip, dodge their worried parents, and dig up some corpses, in approximately that order.]
“When I realized how deeply affected by the Yiling Patriarch Hanguang-Jun was, I began to realize where this slip in righteousness had come from. You see, while I and the rest of the cultivation world believed that Lan Wangji had been in secluded cultivation for three years to move to a new level in his cultivation, or because he had been wounded fighting the Yiling Patriarch, the truth is much the opposite. Hanguang-Jun was in seclusion as punishment, for siding with the Yiling Patriarch at the Siege of the Burial Mounds. All along, these famed enemies had secretly been allied.”  Jin Guangyao shook his head, expression deeply sympathetic even as the cultivators of the room began to turn to Hanguang-Jun. Hands went to swords, only remaining undrawn due to the thick tension in the room that had yet to break. Hanguang-Jun stood immovable through it all, flawless as jade and cold as ice.  “I believe the Yiling Patriarch must have altered his mind, and had been using his demonic arts to corrupt him as far back as the Sunshot campaign. Now, with the feared patriarch dead, it seems this would no longer be such an issue. But Wei Wuxian left one final plan even after his death, a fail-safe to bring ruin to the cultivation world once again even when he was long gone, and he entrusted that plan to Hanguang-Jun before his death.”  At last, his eyes met Sizhui’s again. Sizhui’s mouth tasted electric, the buzz of the room crashing into him in waves even as it narrowed just to himself, his uncle at his back, his father, and the man before him. He inhaled through his nose and straightened, perfect Lan posture and the ribbon on his forehead proudly on display. He narrowed his eyes back at Jin Guanyao and did not drop his gaze. Jin Guangyao smiled, a flicker of amusement, before he regained his expression of earnest concern to address the crowd.  “I found proof in the records of the Wen work camps, and writings recovered from the Nightless City. You see, Lan Sizhui, ward of Hanguang-Jun and First Disciple of Gusu Lan, was neither a war orphan nor a poorly concealed bastard, but instead a child smuggled out of the Burial Mounds before the siege.”  Jin Guangyao swept a sleeve over Sizhui’s group.  “Honored cultivators, I stand before you to reveal the surviving heir of the Qishan Wen Sect. Called Lan Sizhui but born Wen Yuan, the son of Wen Xu and his first concubine. Cousin of the Ghost General, and former ward of the Yiling Patriarch, already beginning the work of reviving the Wen and overwhelming the righteous sects with demonic cultivators.”  In the chaos, only one voice cut so bitingly through the noise. Calm and cold and sure, Sizhui latched onto it with all his heart. Anything to avoid looking behind him, at the friends he had lied to.  “So you admit it.” Said Hanguang-Jun, unmoving from his spot amidst the Lan. Jin Guangyao blinked wide eyes at him.  “I’m sorry?”  Hanguang-Jun stepped forward. Even with his name being almost literally dragged through the mud, cultivators still parted around him with automatic deference.  “You admit you knew children were being tortured, in your work camps.”

Note
The headcanon ask think: Lan Jingyi is also an orphan like most of his friends.
The war was over.
The long, terrible war was finally over, and the threat of the Wen sect that had existed on the horizon for as long as Lan Qiren could remember was finally eradicated. His nephews had survived, even flourished – both of them had reputations that spread throughout the cultivation world, for both power and righteousness, and they were both good men, with strong foundations of morality, even-minded temperaments, and a solid head on their shoulders.
Lan Qiren could finally, finally stop worrying about them.
More than that, he could finally turn over to them their patrimony that they had always deserved – Lan Xichen stepping up as sect leader in earnest, expanding his duties from a wartime general and courier to take on the remaining tasks of rebuilding and governing his sect in peacetime, with Lan Wangji standing at his shoulder as second in command.
Lan Qiren, in contrast, could finally rest.
It’s just…
Well.
He wasn’t very good at resting.
“What is there that I can help with?” he asked one of the other surviving sect elders, who rolled her eyes at him. “You know what I mean. I can’t get involved with anything relating to sect leadership, even if I wanted to help lighten Xichen’s load – people would get the wrong idea and start trying to come to me for answers instead of him. There has to be something that I can do that is time-consuming and helpful, but not politically tricky.”
Lan Fan thought about it for a bit.
“Well,” she said after a while. “We do have an awful lot of orphans, and not enough people to mind them.”
“Perfect,” Lan Qiren said, relieved.
“We have enough teachers for that age, mind you,” she said. “What they’re lacking is affection.”
Lan Qiren had been a teacher for most of his life – even with his nephews, he’d been obligated to focus on their education over everything else, raising them in the ways of their sect. It would be a little hard to break that tendency in favor of just raising the children, letting other people teach them until they were old enough for his own classes, but he supposed he could try.
“Give them to me,” he said. “I’ll pretend they’re my grandchildren and spoil them all rotten.”
“Sure you will,” Lan Fan said pityingly. She didn’t think he could break his old habits either. “Whatever you say.”
Lan Qiren glared at her as she left. Just for that, he thought to himself, he was going to be especially indulgent with the first child she gave him. He was going to let them be as wild as he himself had ever wanted to be as a child – and let everyone else deal with the consequences for once. So there!

Family Photos by KelpieCodyne (DCU, gen)
“I thought you quit your photo stalking?” “In my defence, I never said I was quitting, and you never asked if I would,” Tim immediately counters. “So really, this is kind of on you.” Just because Tim became a bat, doesn’t mean he stopped taking photos of bats. Several times Tim took photos of the batfamily, and one time they took photos of him.
This delightful fic features my OTPs of Tim/the batfam, Tim/photography, and Tim/being a little weirdo.
In Service by @smilebackwards (DCU, gen)
Tim rings the doorbell of Wayne Manor for the third time in as many days, and for the third time, Mr. Pennyworth opens the heavy oak door. He looks tired and careworn and Tim knows for certain that he’s choosing the right thing now. Mr. Wayne isn’t going to let him anywhere near the Robin suit, but maybe Tim doesn’t need it. There’s another tack he can try. Or: When Bruce refuses to accept Tim as the new Robin, Tim takes the next best option. He apprentices to Alfred.
Such a clever premise, and a sweet execution!
To Preserve the Life of Others by romantic_drift (Nirvana in Fire, gen)
Lin Jingyi has always been a doctor. "Her heart stutters. She thinks for one wild second of just breaking into a mad dash, running out of this accursed palace, Jinling, Da Liang itself. She is insignificant, an orphan, a wandering doctor. They would never chase after her, surely. But there is her family."
Consort Jing's backstory is only glancingly described on the show, and this fic does a brilliant job of putting all the odd fragments together into a complex whole with great characterization.
Zeitnot by decayaslife / @the-ronan-cycle (Captive Prince, Laurent/Damen)
"Zeitnot (chess): German for time trouble. Zeitnot occurs when a player needs to play several moves in a very short period of time in order to reach the time control defined for the game." When twenty-three-year-old Laurent wakes up on the morning of the Battle of Marlas in his adolescent body, he has to figure out how to keep Auguste and Damianos alive through the end of the day.
Ooh, very fun and well done time-travel fix-it.
Su She Eats his Heart Out by @KizuKatana (Untamed/MDZS, Wangxian)
The (bitter) third party pov of the epic college romance between Wei Ying and Lan Zhan, as told from the pettiest NPC to ever exist.
Extremely funny use of an unreliable narrator, and the sequel/companion from Lan Wangji's POV is hilariously horny and smitten - so very in character!

Lan Qiren raises Lan Jingyi - MASTERPOST
Fic on AO3: Why Not Me?
Read it on tumblr: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]
Inspired by a meta post by korpikorppi
Summary:
Lan Jingyi knows that he's a Lan by blood.

Have the maybe first scene of an AU
Sizhui didn’t know what to make of his father’s new ward. Lan Bao was a strange child, in and out of the healer’s ward even though there was nothing wrong with him that could be fixed by them, merely an ever growing catalogue of what Lan Bao struggled with. Sight, writing, coordination - it was as if the gods themselves had decided the boy shouldn’t be a cultivator under any circumstances.
When the other children mocked him for it, Lan Bao only cocked his head, studying them like he did all his surroundings.
“They shouldn’t treat you like that,” Sizhui muttered as he took Lan Bao home, away from politely phrased inquiries meant to hurt. Their father would have dinner with them tonight and once Lan Bao was asleep, Sizhui would report at length about his brother’s hardships. It’s not being a tattletale if it’s for justice, as Jingyi tended to say.
“It’s alright,” Lan Bao replied with a shrug. “Baba said people wouldn’t be kind. I don’t have to make them like me, just live well.”
He stumbled over his next step, but caught himself at the last second before squinting into the distance. Lan Bao’s eyesight was the biggest issue, honestly. He hadn’t ever said why it was so bad, but Sizhui had paid particular attention when the healers spoke and all the little drops of information Lan Bao allowed to escape his mouth.
And all those that he bared unconsciously, such at his pure joy at being outside, the countless questions about every day phenomena and sounds as if he was experiencing them for the first time.
As if he’d been raised in a locked room, the healers had told their father when they though Sizhui out of earshot.
Lan Bao never answered any questions about where he’d come from before they’d found him hidden away in his namesake between their deliveries. Sizhui would’ve thought he were an orphan if he weren’t so odd, wouldn’t mention his father so off-handedly. A father, who played so many songs for him that Lan Bao knew more than even Sizhui despite being six years younger, and drew rabbits with such accuracy that, unlike dogs, Lan Bao recognized them on sight. A nameless father who couldn’t walk and yet never let his son leave the house.
No, Sizhui really didn’t know what to make of Lan Bao and all his secrets.

M, 61k, Wangxian
Summary: In his madness, they say, the Yiling Patriarch stole into Koi Tower and abducted the widow of Jin Zixuan and her young son, only for all of them to die in a fire in the Burial Mounds shortly thereafter. Sixteen later, Lan Jingyi runs into two rogue cultivators during a night hunt.
Mojo's comments: Such an amazing premise and a well-written story! I'm a little breathless after that ending, and just so happy I dove in. POV moves around, (as does the point in time) and so there's a broad focus over everyone's perspective on the events of the 16 years following wwx's 'death'. I'm particularly fascinated by lxc, whose perspective is so distorted, bless him, but you can see how it all happened and how each step of the way he had only the best intentions. The plot divergence is massive enough that everything is different, and Author is very creative in pulling all the strings together. So. In which jyl kidnaps her wreck of a mourning Yiling Patriarch and forces them both into healing for the sakes of their sons. Lwj mourns, adopts the orphaned kid who reminds him of wwx, and finds a new focus until jingyi literally stumbles over sizhui and jin ling… who all get along like a house afire. So there's reunion, friendship, family feels, treachery and danger, grief, mourning, healing and love. Great story.
canon divergence, somebody lives/not everybody dies, jiang yanli lives, adorable juniors, parenthood, grief/mourning, canon-typical violence, family feels, reunions, golden core reveal, background songxiao, getting together, recovery, sect politics, happy ending

Nielan??
who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter
Lan Xichen is the werewolf, and Nie Mingjue is the hunter. NMJ gets nipped by LXC while hunting for teenage werewolf Lan Wangji; but the bite doesn't break skin, so Nie Mingjue stays human.
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman
I already have a merfolk au in which Lan Xichen is the merman, although he spends the first 33 years of his life living as a human. :D
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar
Nielan are both witches! Their familiars are their shapeshifting little brothers.
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict
Lan Xichen is a passionate lover of coffee in most of my modern AUs; and modern!NMJ would probably enjoy running a coffee shop, which means that he and LXC would meet and fall in love sooner or later. <3
who’s the TA and who’s the professor
History student Nie Mingjue goes back to school to get a postgraduate degree, after taking time off to help his brother NHS through high school and university; and he ends up TA-ing for junior professor Lan Xichen, who turns out to be two years younger than NMJ is. After Nie Mingjue gets his degree, they start a relationship.
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)
(coughs in knight!NMJ + prince!LXC au)
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent
I'd like to see Nielan in this AU as longtime friends, rather than a couple who meet via the teacher having the single parent's child in their class. On my way to think about an AU where Lan Xichen is confident about providing a good environment for his orphaned baby cousin because his best friend Nie Mingjue would be able to look after Jingyi at school for the first year...
who’s the writer and who’s the editor
Nie Mingjue would be the writer, and Lan Xichen would be his editor. I'm not sure what NMJ would be writing about, though.

Hey, have you thought about the parallels between how Lan Wangji raised Lan Sizhui vs how Jiang Cheng raised Jin Ling? Like these were both kids that lost both their parents from a very young age (Sizhui losing all his family too) and they both grew up with just grew up with just male role models and “no mother to teach” them. Yet, while Sizhui is kind and open minded from the beginning and when finding out about his past all he does is try to raise a cenotaph. On the other hand, Jin Ling is full of rage, only thinking about acquiring glory in the beginning and so much repressed grief to the point he breaks down crying in public twice.
Hi anon,
I think the novel is very clear in using the two as foils, as well as driving home the fact, from the very introduction of Jin Ling into the story, that him being made an orphan due to unfortunate circumstances is not an excuse or a justification for his current behaviour.
At the same time, I think Jin Ling has to face more pressures as the future leader of the Jin clan. Straddling between the Jiang clan and the Jin clan, and being ostracised by other kids his age, means he did not benefit from the camaraderie of his peers to mediate for instance the heavy influence of JC's expectations and own neuroses on his development (which impacted his personality much more than JGY, although he was the one other significant figure in his life, aside from Xianzi). After all, LSZ did not only have LWJ in his life. It is clear that LSZ is not the most common Lan junior (something WWX points out when he meets him, wondering who could have raised him to be such an outstanding little seedling), but neither is Lan Jingyi. In a way, JL was not only constantly reminded of the void left by his parents, and told it was an injustice he had suffered because of an Evil Doer, but very little ever came to fill that void--and he was made to feel, anyway, that he was better than those people who existed beyond it. In opposition, while LSZ knew from childhood that he was an orphan, he was never led into resentment or victimisation, and had a community and close relationship.
We met LSZ as he led a group of juniors during a nighthunt trying to help the common people; we met JL on his own, antagonising and stomping over those lesser around him. And so it is meaningful that JL's new relationships in the course of the novel, including his friendship with LSZ, are important aspects of his growth and journey. LSZ does not meet JL in the middle, and thus does not undergo much change (and the one he undergoes has nothing to do with JL) but they become friends because JL realises he not only needs to change, but wants to because it is a happier, more peaceful and more fulfilling life that way.

for choose violence ask game, mdzs or svsss (your pick), 13, 16, and 19?
13. worst blorbofication... for MDZS, since I can't think offhand of any terrible blorbofication I've seen in action for SVSSS.
I think I could honestly go with Wei Wuxian or Jiang Cheng for this one. It's sometimes very difficult to be a fan of both characters in this fandom since there are two separate camps that have formed (not containing all JC or WWX likers, obviously) that are very invested in making the other guy look bad to make their own guy look good. I start getting negative red minus signs over my head any time people come up with a headcanon, assign it the status of canon, and start accusing anyone who doesn't share the headcanon of the Ism of the day. Both camps do this, Jiang Cheng likers can be just as bad. When we start getting into Sect Leader Jiang Personally Midwifed Every Child In Yunmeng Under The Age Of Three territory I have already well checked out.
But anyway, at the end of the day I'd have to give the medal to the specific strain of WWX stans who seem to really, really want him to be a poor battered Victorian orphan waif who was abused and miserable in Lotus Pier and experienced nothing but misery there from day 1 until he finally escaped/powered up/turned justice on his old abusers. Guys, there's already an MXTX character right there if you want this story; it's Luo Binghe.
16. you can’t understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)... for MDZS.
I think I have to come back to ChengYi (Jiang Cheng/Lan Jingyi) again for this. Recently I went to an in-person meetup with some old friends and it turned out some of them were into MDZS, and she stated this as her favorite pairing. I am firmly of the opinion that anyone should be able to ship anything they like, but like why.
19. you’re mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like… for SVSSS.
I would say that I make a fairly consistent effort to not feel ashamed by any of my fandom activities, but here's one I'll at least put in this neighborhood: I actually consider the Luo BingGe/OG Shen Qingqiu setup (and LBG vs CucumberSQQ setup to a lesser extent) to be a gift from the heavens for us awful whump likers, because it's a setup where you can run with pretty much any whump scenario, no matter how contrived or physically implausible. I have read some Very Dark fics in this setup and they will remain private in my bookmarks.
🔥 choose violence ask game 🔥
